The abandoned chromite-asbestos mines are located in the Roro hills, West Singhbhum, Jharkhand, India, where mining operation ceased in 1983, and since then these mines are causing environmental pollution. The present study was planned to phytoremediate these metalloid and metal contaminated mine waste by using two aromatic grasses, Cymbopogon citratus and Chrysopogon zizanioides by applying different proportions of amendments (chicken manure, farmyard manure and garden soil). Mine waste has neutral pH, low electrical conductivity and organic carbon with higher concentration of total metals (Cr and Ni) as compared to soil. Application of manures resulted significant improvements of mine waste characteristics and plant growth, reduction in the availability of total extractable toxic metals (Cr, Ni) and increase in Mn, Zn and Cu concentration in the substrate. The maximum growth and biomass production for C. citratus and C. zizanioides were found in T-IV combination comprising of mine waste (90%), chicken manure (2.5%), farmyard manure (2.5%) and garden soil (5%). Addition of T-IV combination also resulted in low Cr and Ni accumulation in roots and reduction in translocation to shoots. Study indicates that C. citratus and C. zizanioides can be used for phytostabilization of abandoned chromite-asbestos mine waste with amendments.  相似文献

A four-year field study was conducted on a Hebert gravelly sandy loam (pH 4.5) in Nova Scotia to assess the effects of pruning management and seven fertility amendments on lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium augustifolium Ait) production (yield, above ground and root tissue composition) and soil fertility. Pruning by oil burning produced higher fruit yields than flail mowing but burning had the opposite effect on the plant N content (with a lesser influence on above ground Mn and Zn). None of the fertility treatments (chicken manure, dairy manure, swine manure, urea, sawdust, NPK, NPK+S+Lime+Micronutrients) produced fruit yields significantly greater than the control. Treatments provided the equivalent of 50kg total N/ha/2-yr cycle. Treatments influenced tissue N, P, K, Ca, Mg, B, Mn, Cu, Zn and Mo levels. In general, the three manure treatments produced the highest levels of plant macronutrients; the urea treatment produced the lowest levels of plant nutrients. In most cases, extractable levels of soil P, K, Ca and Mg were highly correlated with the plant tissue content of these elements. Overall, the dairy manure treated soils were the highest in soil fertility.  相似文献

Summary Soils amended with organic amendments such as rice chaff, mustard cake, neem cake, saw dust and farm yard manure significantly reduced the seedling infection of rice owing toRhizoctonia solani. Significant increase in shoot growth was noticed in soils amended with organic amendments while reduction in root growth of rice seedlings was also observed owing to the addition of organic amendments such as sunflower cake, mustard cake, coconut cake and farmyard manure.  相似文献

Summary The effects of exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) levels of 82, 72, 65 and 35 and 0, 15 and 30 days of presubmergence (submergence prior to the transplanting of rice) on yield and chemical composition of rice and availability of Fe, Mn, Zn and P in soil were studied factorially in a field experiment. Presubmergence increased rice yields at all ESP levels, the effect being more pronounced at high ESP's. Increasing ESP decreased yields and the contents of Ca, Mg, K, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu but increased that of P and Na in the crop. Presubmergence enhanced absorption of all the above elements by the crop except P, K, Mg, Zn and Cu in the grain and decreased Na in grain and straw. Growing of rice under submerged conditions also facilitated the improvement of these soils. Effects of submergence and ESP on the availability of Fe, Mn, Zn and P in soil and their role in the nutrition of rice are discussed. The results suggest that 15 to 30 days presubmergence improved rice yields on a calcareous sodic soil of the Indo-Gangetic alluvial plain.  相似文献

Pot and field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of soil amendments (cow manure, rice straw, zeolite, dicalcium phosphate) on the growth and metal uptake (Cd, Zn) of maize (Zea mays) grown in Cd/Zn contaminated soil. The addition of cow manure and rice straw significantly increased the dry biomass, shoot and root length, and grain yield of maize when compared with the control. In pot study, cow manure, rice straw, and dicalcium phosphate all proved effective in reducing Cd and Zn concentrations in shoots and roots. Cd and Zn concentrations in the grains of maize grown in field study plots with cow manure and dicalcium phosphate amendments to highly contaminated soil (Cd 36.5 mg kg?1 and Zn 1520.8 mg kg?1) conformed to acceptable standards for animal feed. Additionally both cow manure and dicalcium phosphate amendments resulted in the significant decrease of Cd and Zn concentrations in shoots of maize.  相似文献

Summary The effects of soil acidification and micronutrient addition on levels of extractable Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu in a soil, and on the growth and micronutrient uptake of young highbush blueberry plants (Vaccinium corymbosum L. cv. Blueray) was investigated in a greenhouse study.Levels of 0.05M CaCl2-extractable Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu increased as the pH was lowered from 7.0 to 3.8. However, the solubility (CaCl2-extractability) of Fe and Cu was considerably less pH-dependent than that of Mn and Zn. With the exception of HCl-and DTPA-extractable Mn, micronutrients extractable with 0.1M HCl, 0.005M DTPA and 0.04M EDTA were unaffected or raised only slightly as the pH was lowered from 6.0 to 3.8. Quantities of Mn and Zn extractable with CaCl2 were similar in magnitude to those extractable with HCl, DTPA and EDTA whilst, in contrast, the latter reagents extracted considerably more Cu and Fe than did CaCl2. A fractionation of soil Zn and Cu revealed that soil acidification resulted in an increase in the CaCl2- and pyrophosphate-extractable fractions and a smaller decrease in the oxalate-extractable fraction.Plant dry matter production increased consistently when the soil pH was lowered from 7.0 to 4.6 but there was a slight decline in dry matter as the pH was lowered to 3.8. Micronutrient additions had no influence on plant biomass although plant uptake was increased. As the pH was lowered, concentrations of plant Fe first decreased and then increased whilst those of Mn, and to a lesser extent Zn and Cu, increased markedly.  相似文献

Summary Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the effect of algal growth on the change of (I) pH, (II) available phosphorus and (III) solubility of iron and manganese content in five waterlogged alluvial rice soils of West Bengal, India. The results showed that the algal growth initially caused an increase in the soil pH, which later declined to the original value in some of the soils. The available phosphorus content decreased upto 90 days of their growth and began to increase towards the later period of incubation. The drastic fall of water soluble plus exchaneable manganese content of the soils due to algal growth was accompanied by similar increase in reducible manganese content. No appreciable change in water soluble plus exchangeable ferrous iron content was encountered but theN-NH4OAC(pH 3) extractable iron due to algal growth progressively decreased with the progress of the incubation period.  相似文献

Summary Application of zinc sulphate mixed with compost/poultry manure proved to be equivalent to the effect of dipping the seedling roots in 4% ZnO suspension with respect to rice yields but Zn-amended organic manures were superior to other treatments with regards to total Zn uptake. A marked residual effect of soil applied treatments was recorded on the succeeding maize crop. Application of poultry manure alone was about one and a half times more effective than compost alone in increasing the rice and maize grain yields. Poultry manure surpassed compost in increasing zinc uptake by the crops and at the same time it built up more available Zn in soil than compost for the following crop. The magnitude of yields and Zn uptake response were magnified when zinc sulphate was applied along with organic manures. Application of 25 kg zinc sulphate/ha alone had the same effect as 50 quintals poultry manure alone or 12.5 kg zinc sulphate applied with 50 quintals compost/ha with respect to crop yields. A significant positive correlation was, recorded in both the crops between Zn concentration in grain or straw and their respective yields.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of three levels of Fe and two levels of Zn, and their combinations, on the growth, yield and Fe, Zn, and Mn nutrition of rice on a zinc deficient sodic soil amended with gypsum. Iron and zinc were supplied as sulphates. Application of Zn significantly enhanced the yield of rice and available soil and plant Zn irrespective of Fe application. Maximum response of rice to Zn was obtained when Fe was applied at the highest rate. While Fe application brought about a significant improvement in available soil and plant Fe and Mn, it decreased significantly Zn content of the crop. After crop harvest, recovery of added Fe was 20% and Zn 12%. Results suggest that benefits of Fe application to rice in sodic soils can only be realised if it is applied along with Zn.  相似文献

Summary Laboratory incubation experiments were conducted with low-land rice soil to study the effect of applying three different levels of molybdenum (0, 2.5 and 5.0 ppm) and phosphorus (0, 100 and 200 ppm), in all possible combinations, on the changes in available Mo, P, Mn, Zn and Cu in soil. The results showed that application of Mo at both the levels increased the content of extractable Mo and P but decreased those of Cu and Mo in soil whereas application of Mo at higher level only increased the content of extractable Zn in soil. Application of P at both the levels decreased the content of extractable Mo, Mn and Cu but increased that of P whereas it showed an inconsistent effect on the extractable Zn content in soil. The P × Mo interaction effect was found to be beneficial for the content of P, Mo and Zn only. During the initial period of incubation all elements except Cu recorded an increase but with the progress of incubation period the content of all the elements except Mn gradually declined.  相似文献

Summary Nutrient changes in submerged rice soil were studied in soil-water-plant ecosystem in direct-seeded rice crop. Continuous removal of nutrients by the crop resulted in ultimate decrease in the availability of NH4–N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu. However, there was a slight increase in Fe availability in soil with increase in period of submergence and crop growth. The data was subjected to statistical function fittings to study the nature of changes. Depending on the R2% values, quadratic type was the best fit for pH, available NH4–N, K, Mg, Fe, Mn and Cu, whereas logarithmic type was the best fit for available P, Ca and Zn. No response was noticed to the application of P and K. Highest correlation coefficient between grain yield and NH4–N in soil was obtained at the panicle initiation stage indicating that limiting nitrogen during this period might affect grain yield to the maximum extent compared to tiller initiation and maximum tillering stages.  相似文献

Summary A 2-year field study was undertaken on a sandy loam in a tropical monsoon region to determine the growth and yield response of maize (Zea mays L.) to 10–11 day intermittent submergence at two growth stagesviz., 20 (stage 1) and 40 (stage 2) days after planting, in combination with two rates of rice straw mulch (0 and 6 t/ha) and three levels (0, 30 and 60 kg/ha) of soil-applied supplemental nitrogen. Intermittent submergence at both growth stages caused a severe oxygen stress in the root-zone. Compared with no-flooding, stage-1 flooding without additional N reduced the grain yield by 51 and 69%, stover yield by 16 and 45% and grain: stover ratio by 41 and 47% in the first and second year, respectively. Similar were the submergence effects on N, P, K and Zn concentrations in leaves, ears per plant and grain weight per ear. Relatively more adverse effects of stage-1 flooding in the second than the first year followed from the hotter soil and atmospheric environments in the former season. The stage-2 flooding produced practically no ill effects on growth and yield of the crop. Soil application of 60 kg N/ha after termination of stage-1 flooding recovered the grain yield by 77% in the first year and 65% in the second year. Additional nitrogen also benefited the growth and yield characters. The interactive effects of straw mulching with flooding were not distinct.  The effect of various organic soil amendments on arbuscular myorrhizal (AM) fungal activity on rice plants was tested under greenhouse and field conditions with reference to sheath blight (ShB) disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani. AM spore density, per cent infection, and intensity of infection were increased by organic amendments, whilst ShB disease was decreased. Certain amendments, especially green leaf manure, stimulated arbuscule development in rice plants. Mycorrhiza formation and sporulation were higher with healthy rice plants than with rice plants infected with R. solani. Our results indicate the possibility of using selective organic amendments to enhance development of native AM fungi and thus reduce disease incidence. Accepted: 9 November 1995  相似文献

Soil samples from surface and sub-surface horizons in the well-drained and poorly-drained members of three soil catenas were incubated under submergence or at field capacity to study the effects of these incubation conditions and prior natural drainage on the solubility of four plant micro-nutrients. Iron, Mn, Zn and Cu were extracted by water using a 11 water:soil ratio. The four micronutrient metals were also extracted by DTPA solutions buffered at either pH 5.3 or pH 7.3 to compare the effectiveness of these two extractants under these incubation conditions with acid soils. Generally the extractability of the nutrients was much affected by the horizon (A, E or B) with A horizons having the greatest amounts of all nutrients and undergoing greater changes in water- and DTPA-extractability during incubation. Soil drainage class (wellvs. poorly drained) had few effects. Incubation moisture regime had major effects on water extractable Fe and Mn with lesser effects on Zn and Cu. Submerged soils generally had the greatest levels of water extractable nutrients, though rice uptake did not reflect this. DTPA at pH 5.3 extracted 2 to 3 times as much Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu as did DTPA at pH 7.3 and about 50 to 100 times as much as did water. Correlations between DTPA extractable nutrients and rice uptake were significant only for Fe and Cu and declined during incubation. The changes in all variables during incubation were complex, being related to soil properties such as organic matter content, pH and mineralogy as well as to incubation conditions.  相似文献

Summary Several Zn-deficient soils from the major rice growing areas in the USA were characterized with respect to extractable and labile Zn and other parameters including available P, pH, organic matter, and cation exchange capacity. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine whether the above factors influence the response of several rice cultivars to ZnSO4 or ZnEDTA applied as a mixed preplant treatment or to the floodwater at panicle initiation.Response of the rice to Zn varied widely among soils with labile Zn (L value) being a poor indicator of Zn availability and soil pH, and DTPA or 2 N MgCl2 extraction of Zn being the most reliable indices. Soil incorporation prior to flooding was more effective than floodwater application for the initial crop, but both methods of placement were comparable for a subsequent ratoon crop. In either situation, ZnSO4 was superior to ZnEDTA. Recovery of Zn from ZnSO4 was generally less than 5 percent where Zn response was obtained and up to 14 percent from nonresponsive soils.  相似文献

Summary Levels of extractable micronutrients in a peat and the growth and nutrient uptake of young highbush blueberry plants (Vaccinium corymbosum L cv. Blueray) were studied in a greenhouse experiment in response to liming and two rates of addition of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu.Levels of extractable micronutrients showed different trends with liming depending upon the extractant used and the element being considered. Levels of 0.05M CaCl2-extractable Fe, Mn and Zn decreased as the pH was raised whilst those of Cu first decreased and then increased again. There was a general decline in 0.1M HCl-extractable Fe, Mn and Cu with increasing pH but levels of Zn were not greatly affected. Levels of 0.005M DTPA extractable Fe, Mn Zn and Cu generally declined but those extractable with 0.04M EDTA were either unaffected or increased as the pH was raised. Levels of CaCl2-extractable Mn and Zn were the same order of magnitude as those extractable with HCl, DTPA and EDTA. In contrast, the latter reagents extracted considerably more Fe and Cu than did CaCl2.Dry matter yields of plants were increased as the pH was raised from 3.9 to 4.3 but then decreased markedly as the pH was raised further to 6.7. With increasing pH, concentrations of plant Fe generally increased those of Mn were decreased and those of Zn and Cu were not greatly affected except for a marked decline in plant Cu at pH 6.7.  相似文献

A pot study was conducted to compare the effects of amendments (CaHPO4 and cow manure) on growth and uptake of Cd and Zn from contaminated sediments by two wetland plant species, Typha angustifolia and Colocasia esculenta. Contaminated sediments (Cd 33.2 mg kg–1 and Zn 363 mg kg–1) were collected from Mae Tao basin, Mae Sot district, Tak province, Thailand. The experiment consisted of 4 treatments: control (uncontaminated sediment), Cd/Zn, Cd/Zn + 5% CaHPO4, and Cd/Zn + 10% cow manure. Plants were grown for 3 months in the greenhouse. The addition of CaHPO4 resulted in the highest relative growth rate (RGR) and highest Cd accumulation in both T. angustifolia and C. esculenta while the lowest RGR was found in C. esculenta grown in the cow manure treatment. Both plant species had higher concentrations of metals (Cd, Zn) in their belowground parts. None of the amendments affected Zn accumulation. C. esculenta exhibited the highest uptake of both Cd and Zn. The results clearly demonstrated the phytoremediation potential of C. esculenta and the enhancement of this potential by CaHPO4 amendment.  相似文献

This is the second of two papers presenting the data from an experiment on the application of aerobically-digested sewage sludge (AES), anaerobic lagoon septic wastes (ANS), sewage sludge compost and fertilizer to soils for grass forage and feed corn production at two different sites in Nova Scotia. Crop yields, plant tissue and Mehlich-1 extractable soil nutrients were evaluated; 15 elements were analyzed in the plant tissue and 9 elements in the soil extracts. This paper describes the Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and B content of the crops and the Mehlich-1 extractable content of the soils. The response to the amendments was not consistent at the two sites with the two different crops. We found that the septic sludge (ANS) produced the highest forage Fe, Cu and Zn levels and was equal to compost in elevating corn stover and forage S and the forage B content. The compost produced the highest forage Ca and corn Zn, the AES produced the highest corn Mn, and fertilizer produced the highest forage Mn. None of the amendments produced excessive levels of the above nutrients; rather, the amendments improved the feed quality of the forage and corn stover. Lastly, it was noted that the Mehlich-1 extract only had a significantly positive correlation with forage Cu content.  相似文献

Research undertaken over the last 40 years has confirmed that the long-term consumption of cadmium (Cd) contaminated rice contributes to human Cd disease. Rice is the staple of millions throughout South and Southeast Asia. Therefore, the ability to accurately assess the risk of rice grain Cd uptake in areas of elevated soil Cd would be a pre-requisite to protecting public health and regional export security. During 2001–2002, 308 concomitant soil and rice grain samples were collected from a Cd/Zn co-contaminated site in Western Thailand and determined for aqua regia digested soil Cd and rice grain Cd. No significant relationship was observed between total soil Cd and rice grain Cd (r 2 = 0.117). This intuitively is to be expected since total soil Cd bears no relationship to phyto-available Cd. Similarly no relationship was observed between 0.005 M DTPA extractable soil (air-dry) Cd and rice grain Cd (r 2 = 0.165). Again this result could have been predicted as the phyto-availability of Cd in paddy soils is a function of the complex interaction between soil pH, redox conditions and the presence of competing ions. Consequently, in 2003 a further study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of commonly utilized soil extractants namely, 0.1, 0.05 and 0.01 M CaCl2 solutions at a soil extractant ratio of 1:5 and 1 M NH4NO3 for 2 h or 4 h extractions times at a soil/extractant ratio of 1:2.5. Soil samples were collected at the critical rice grain fill stage and sub-divided into Portion A which was subjected to conventional air-drying and sample preparation procedures and Portion B which was maintained at Field Condition (FC) and stored at <4°C until extractions were undertaken. Concomitant rice grain samples were collected at maturity. The results indicate that air-dried soil samples subjected to conventional soil preparation procedures were totally ineffective at predicting the uptake of Cd by rice stem, leaf or grain, regardless of extractant. Further, the results indicate that the Stepwise Regression model incorporating 0.1 M CaCl2 extractable Cd and soil pHw determined on field moist samples accounts for 63.8% of the variability in rice grain Cd.  相似文献
