Summary The total amount of nitrogen derived from symbiotic nitrogen fixation in two pea and one field bean cultivar, supplied with 50 kg N ha−1 at sowing (‘starter’-N), was estimated to 165, 136, and 186 kg N ha−1, respectively (three-year means). However, estimates varied considerably between the three years. At the full bloom/flat pod growth stage from 30 to 59 per cent of total N2 fixation had taken place. The proportion of total N derived from N2 fixation at maturity was higher in seeds than in vegetative plant parts and amounted to 59.5, 51.3 and 66.3 per cent of total above-ground plant N in the two pea cultivars and field bean, respectively (three-year means). The recovery of fertilizer N was 62.2, 70.2, 52.1, and 69.5 per cent in the two pea cultivars, field bean and barley, respectively. Growth analysis indicated that barley did not meet the claims for an ideal reference crop in the15N fertilizer dilution technique for estimating N2 fixation in pea and field bean. ‘Starter’-N neither increased the seed yield nor the N content of the grain legumes.  相似文献

It has recently been reported that N2 fixation and carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) are negatively correlated. To further test this hypothesis, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate if Δ is correlated with the efficiency of lentil (Lens culinaris cv Laird) in fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Lentil seed was inoculated with one of 10 Rhizobium leguminosarum strains that varied in their effectiveness in symbiotic N2 fixation. Carbon-13 discrimination was positively correlated with N2 fixation (r2=0.60*). Although the amount of N2 fixed ranged from 1.5 mg N to 13.5 mg N shoot−1, the range of Δ values was only 25.8 to 26.6%.. It is unlikely that variability of such small magnitude could be of any practical use in selecting for N2-fixing efficiency.  相似文献

Sustainable management for existing Amazonian forests requires an extensive knowledge about the limits of ecosystem nutrient cycles. Therefore, symbiotic nitrogen (N2) fixation of legumes was investigated in a periodically flooded forest of the central Amazon floodplain (Várzea) over two hydrological cycles (20 months) using the 15N natural abundance method. No seasonal variation in 15N abundance (δ 15N values) in trees which would suggest differences in N2 fixation rates between the terrestrial and the aquatic phase was found. Estimations of the percentage of N derived from atmosphere (%Ndfa) for the nodulated legumes with Neptunia oleracea on the one side and Teramnus volubilis on the other resulted in mean %Ndfa values between 9 and 66%, respectively. More than half of the nodulated legume species had %Ndfa values above 45%. These relatively high N gains are important for the nodulated legumes during the whole hydrological cycle. With a %Ndfa of 4–5% for the entire Várzea forest, N2 fixation is important for the ecosystem and therefore, has to be taken into consideration for new sustainable land-use strategies in this area.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation was measured in monocropped sweet-blue lupin (Lupinus angustifolius), lupin intercropped with two ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) cultivars or with oats (Avena sativa) on an Andosol soil, using the 15N isotope dilution method. At 117 days after planting and at a mean temperature below 10°C, monocropped lupin derived an average of 92% or 195 kg N ha−1 of its N from N2 fixation. Intercropping lupin with cereals increased (p<0.05) the percentage of N derived from atmospheric N2 (% Ndfa) to a mean of 96%. Compared to the monocropped, total N fixed per hectare in intercropped lupin declined approximately 50%, in line with the decrease in seeding rate and dry matter yield. With these high values of N2 fixation, selection of the reference crop was not a problem; all the cereals, intercropped or grown singly produced similar estimates of N2 fixed in lupin. It was deduced from the 15N data that significant N transfer occurred from lupin to intercropped Italian ryegrass but not to intercropped Westerwoldian ryegrass or to oats. Doubling the 15N fertilizer rate from 30 to 60 kg N ha−1 decreased % Ndfa to 86% (p<0.05), but total N fixed was unaltered. These results indicate that lupin has a high potential for N2 fixation at low temperatures, and can maintain higher rates of N2 fixation in soils of high N than many other forage and pasture legumes.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns of growth and nitrogen fixation in field-grown pea   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The seasonal patterns of growth and symbiotic N2 fixation under field conditions were studied by growth analysis and use of15N-labelled fertilizer in a determinate pea cultivar (Pisum sativum L.) grown for harvest at the dry seed stage. The patterns of fertilizer N-uptake were almost identical in pea and barley (the non-fixing reference crop), but more fertilizer-N was recovered in barley than in pea. The estimated rate of N2 fixation in pea gradually increased during the pre-flowering and flowering growth stages and reached a maximum of 10 kg N fixed per ha per day nine to ten weeks after seedling emergence. This was the time of early pod-development (flat pod growth stage) and also the time for maximum crop growth rate and maximum green leaf area index. A steep drop in N2 fixation rate occurred during the following week. This drop was simultaneous with lodging of the crop, pod-filling (round pod growth stage) and the initiation of mobilization of nitrogen from vegetative organs. The application of fertilizer-N inhibited the rate of N2 fixation only during that period of growth, when the main part of fertilizer-N was taken up and shortly after. Total accumulation of fixed nitrogen was estimated to be 244, 238 and 213 kg N ha−1 in pea supplied with nil, 25 or 50 kg NO 3 −N ha−1, respectively. About one-fourth of total N2 fixation was carried out during preflowering, one fourth during the two weeks of flowering and the remainder during post-flowering. About 55% of the amount of N present in pods at maturity was estimated to be derived from mobilization of N from vegetative organs. “Starter” N (25 or 50 kg NO 3 −N ha−1) did not significantly influence either dry matter and nitrogen accumulation or the development of leaf area. Neither root length and root biomass determined 8 weeks after seedling emergence nor the yield of seed dry matter and nitrogen at maturity were influenced by fertilizer application.  相似文献

Although wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the dominant crop of the semi-arid plains of Canada and the western United States, lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) has become an important alternative crop. Sources and seasonal accumulation of N must be understood in order to identify parameters that can lead to increased N2-fixing activity and yield. Inoculated lentil was grown in a sandy-loam soil at an irrigated site in Saskatchewan, Canada. Wheat was used as the reference crop to estimate N2 fixation by the A-value approach. Lentil and wheat received 10 and 100 kg N ha−1 of ammonium nitrate, respectively. Crops were harvested six times during the growing season and plant components analyzed. During the first 71 days after planting the wheat had a higher daily dry matter and N accumulation compared to lentil. However, during the latter part of the growing season, daily dry matter and N accumulation were greater for lentil. The maximum total N accumulation for lentil at maturity was 149 kg ha−1. In contrast, wheat had a maximum N accumulation of 98 kg ha−1 in the Feekes 11.1 stage, or 86 days after planting. The maximum daily rates of N accumulation were 3.82 kg N ha−1 day−1 for lentil and 2.21 kg N ha−1 day−1 for wheat. The percentage of N derived from N2 fixation (% Ndfa) ranged from 0 at the first harvest to 92 % at final harvest. Generative plant components had higher values for % Ndfa than the vegetative components which indicates that N in the reproductive plant parts was derived largely from current N2 fixation and lentil continued to fix N until the end of the pod fill stage. At final harvest, lentil had derived 129 kg N ha−1 from N2 fixation with maximum N2-fixing activity (4.4 kg N ha−1 day−1) occurring during the early stages of pod fill. Higher maximum rates of N2-fixing activity than net N accumulation (3.82 kg N ha−1 day−1) may have been caused by N losses like volatilization. In addition, lentil provided a net N contribution to the soil of 59 kg ha−1 following the removal of the grain.  相似文献

Grasses grown in mixture with nodulated legumes often are N-limited, but N fertilization may result in reductions of N2 fixation and legume stands. We studied N-fertilizer effects on N2 fixation for three binary legume-grass mixtures in Uruguay. Replicated swards of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) (WC), red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) (RC), or birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) (BT), each in combination with tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb) (TF) at two legume proportions were sown in 1983 (Exp. 1) and 1984 (Exp. 2). In the fall of 1984, N treatments at 100 kg ha−1 and controls were randomly assigned to subplots in Exp. 1 (established swards) and in Exp. 2 (at seeding). The soil for both experiments was a fine, montmorillonitic, mesic, Typic Argiudolls. Herbage fixed-N was estimated by 15N isotope-dilution with pure stands of TF as reference. In both experiments, N fertilization reduced the proportion of legume N derived from air (% Ndfa) and increased herbage yield only during the first 18 to 20 weeks after application. Fertilizer-N reduced annual fixed-N yield from 178 to 148 kg ha−1 in Exp. 1 and from 65 to 29 kg ha−1 in Exp. 2 Fixed-N yield for BT was markedly reduced by N in both experiments (33 to 53%), whereas for the clovers reduction was lesser in Exp. 1 (9 to 13%) than in Exp. 2 (46 to 64%). Negative effects of N on % Ndfa were more evident for the high legume proportion. We conclude that fertilization with 100 kg N ha−1 reduced % Ndfa only for the immediate 18 to 20 weeks after application. Fertilizer-induced reduction of fixed-N yields lasted longer because of a more prolonged depression of legume proportion, especially for BT and for newly seeded swards. Journal Paper no. Drought is an important environmental factor that can affect rhizobial competition and N2 fixation. Three alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. and M. falcata L.) accessions were grown in pots containing soil from an irrigated (Soil 1) and a dryland (Soil 2) alfalfa field in northern Utah, USA. Mutants of three strains of Rhizobium meliloti Dang. from Pakistan (UL 136, UL 210, and UL 222) and a commercial rhizobial strain 102F51a were developed with various levels of resistance to streptomycin. Seeds inoculated with these individual streptomycin-resistant mutants were sown in the two soils containing naturalized rhizobial populations. Soils in the pots were maintained at −0.03, −0.5, and −1.0 MPa. After 10 weeks, plants were harvested and nodule isolates were cultured on agar medium with and without streptomycin to determine nodule occupancy (proportion of the nodules occupied by introduced rhizobial strains). Number of nodules, nodule occupancy, total plant dry weight, and shoot N were higher for Soil 1 than Soil 2. Number of nodules, plant dry weight, and shoot N decreased as drought increased from −0.03 to −1.0 MPa in the three alfalfa accessions. Rhizobial strains UL 136 and UL 222 were competitive with naturalized alfalfa rhizobia and were effective at symbiotic N2 fixation under drought. These results suggest that nodulation, growth, and N2 fixation in alfalfa can be improved by inoculation with competitive and drought-tolerant rhizobia and may be one economically feasible way to increase alfalfa production in water-limited environments. The yield of N in maize (Zea mays L.) and ricebean (Vigna umbellata [Thumb.] Ohwi and Ohashi) were compared on a Tropoqualf soil in North Thailand in 1984 and 1985. Both species were grown in field plots in monoculture or as intercrops at a constant planting density equivalent to 8 maize or 16 ricebean plants per m2. The contribution of symbiotic N2 fixation to ricebean growth was estimated from measurements of the natural abundance of15N (δ15N) in shoot nitrogen and from analysis of ureides in xylem sap vacuumextracted from detached stems. The natural abundance of15N in the intercropped ricebean was found to be considerably less than that in monoculture in both growing seasons. Using maize and a weed (Ageratum conyzoides L.) as non-fixing15N reference plants the proportions (P 15N) of ricebean shoot N derived from N2 fixation ranged from 0.27 to 0.36 in monoculture ricebean up to 0.86 when grown in a 75% maize: 25% ricebean intercrop. When glasshouse-derived calibration curves were used to calculate plant proportional N2 fixation (Pur) from the relative ureide contents of field collected xylem exudates, the contribution of N2 fixation to ricebean N yields throughout the 1985 growing season were greater in intercrop than in monocrop even at the lowest maize:legume ratio (25∶75). Seasonal patterns of sap ureide abundance indicated that N2 fixation was greatest at the time of ricebean podset. The averagePur andP 15N in ricebean during the first 90 days of growth showed identical rankings of monocrop and intercrop treatments in terms of N2 fixation, although the two sets ofP values were different. Nonetheless, seasonal estimates of N2 fixation during the entire 147 days of legume growth determined from ureide analyses indicated that equivalent amounts of N could be fixed by ricebean in a 75∶25 intercrop and in monoculture despite the former being planted at one-quarter the density.  相似文献

A field study was conducted on a clay soil (Andaqueptic Haplaquoll) in the Philippines to directly measure the evolution of (N2+N2O)−15N from 98 atom %15N-labeled urea broadcast at 29 kg N ha−1 into 0.05-m-deep floodwater at 15 days after transplanting (DT) rice. The flux of (N2+N2O)−15N during the 19 days following urea application never exceeded 28 g N ha−1 day−1. The total recovery of (N2+N2O)−15N evolved from the field was only 0.51% of the applied N, whereas total gaseous15N loss estimated from unrecovered15N in the15N balance was 41% of the applied N. Floodwater (nitrate+nitrite)−N in the 5 days following urea application never exceeded 0.14 g N m−3 or 0.3% of the applied N. Prior cropping of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] to flowering with subsequent incorporation of the green manure (dry matter=2.5 Mg ha−1, C/N=15) at 15 days before rice transplanting had no effect on fate of urea applied to rice at 15 DT. The recovery of (N2+N2O)−15N and total15N loss during the 19 days following urea application were 0.46 and 40%, respectively. Direct recovery of evolved (N2+N2O)−15N and total15N loss from 27 kg applied nitrate-N ha−1 were 20% and 53% during the same 19-day period. The failure of directly-recovered (N2+N2O)−15N to match total15N loss from added nitrate-15N might be due to entrapment of denitrification end products in soil or transport of gaseous end products to the atmosphere through rice plants. The rapid conversion of added nitrate-N to (N2+N2O)−N, the apparently sufficient water soluble soil organic C for denitrification (101 μg C g−1 in the top 0.15-m soil layer), and the low floodwater nitrate following urea application suggested that denitrification loss from urea was controlled by supply of nitrate rather than by availability of organic C.  相似文献

The bioerosive potential of the intertidal chiton Acanthopleura gemmata on One Tree Reef was determined by quantification of CaCO3 in daily faecal pellet production of individuals transplanted into mesocosms after nocturnal-feeding forays. Mean bioerosive potential was estimated at 0.16 kg CaCO3 chiton−1 yr−1. Bioerosion rates were estimated for populations on two distinct chiton habitats, reef margin (0.013 kg CaCO3 m−2 yr−1) and beachrock platform (0.25 kg CaCO3 m−2 yr−1). Chiton density on the platform was orders of magnitude greater than on the reef margin. The surface-lowering rate (0.16 mm m−2 yr) due to bioerosion by the beachrock population is a substantial contribution to the total surface-lowering rate of 2 mm m−2 yr−1 previously reported for One Tree Reef across all erosive agents. At high densities, the contribution of A. gemmata to coral reef bioerosion budgets may be comparable to other important bioeroders such as echinoids and fish.  相似文献

Effects of rate of nitrogen (N) fertilizer and stocking rate on production and N2 fixation by white clover (Trifolium repens L.) grown with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were determined over 5 years in farmlets near Hamilton, New Zealand. Three farmlets carried 3.3 dairy cows ha–1 and received urea at 0, 200 or 400 kg N ha–1 yr–1 in 8–10 split applications. A fourth farmlet received 400 kg N ha–1 yr–1 and had 4.4 cows ha–1.There was large variation in annual clover production and total N2 fixation, which in the 0 N treatment ranged from 9 to 20% clover content in pasture and from 79 to 212 kg N fixed ha–1 yr–1. Despite this variation, total pasture production in the 0 N treatment remained at 75–85% of that in the 400 N treatments in all years, due in part to the moderating effect of carry-over of fixed N between years.Fertilizer N application decreased the average proportion of clover N derived from N2 fixation (PN; estimated by 15N dilution) from 77% in the 0 N treatment to 43–48% in the 400 N treatments. The corresponding average total N2 fixation decreased from 154 kg N ha–1 yr–1 to 39–53 kg N ha–1 yr–1. This includes N2 fixation in clover tissue below grazing height estimated at 70% of N2 fixation in above grazing height tissue, based on associated measurements, and confirmed by field N balance calculations. Effects of N fertilizer on clover growth and N2 fixation were greatest in spring and summer. In autumn, the 200 N treatment grew more clover than the 0 N treatment and N2 fixation was the same. This was attributed to more severe grazing during summer in the 0 N treatment, resulting in higher surface soil temperatures and a deleterious effect on clover stolons. In the 400 N treatments, a 33% increase in cow stocking rate tended to decrease PN from 48 to 43% due to more N cycling in excreta, but resulted in up to 2-fold more clover dry matter and N2 fixation because lower pasture mass reduced grass competition, particularly during spring.  相似文献

Common bean,Phaseolus vulgaris L., is known to be ‘inefficient’ in nodulation and N2 fixation although it responds to applied nitrogen. An experiment was conducted to identify and to characterize bean cultivars nodulating in the presence of a high level of nitrogen. Sixteen cultivars and a check for inefficient nodulation, OAC Seaforth, were inoculated and grown for 40 days in replicated pots supplied with zero, 3.5 and 10.5 mM combined nitrogen as NO 3 and NH 4 + . Seven traits relating to nodulation and N2 fixation were all significantly affected by N level (N), cultivar (Cv) and N × Cv interactions (except for root dry weight), indicating that cultivars responded differently to the N treatments. Total dry weight (W) and shoot to root ratio (S/R) increased with the increased N levels. Nodule dry weight (Wn), visual nodulation score (Nv) and nodulation index (Nx) decreased as the N increased. Percent N and N content per plant increased with the increased N level. Plant weight (W) was positively correlated with Wn, Nv and N content and negatively correlated with %N. Nodulation score was positively associated with Wn and plant N content. Genotypes superior in nodulation and N2 fixation in the presence of N were identified. Cultivars Italian Barlotti, California Light Red Kidney, Kentucky Wonder A and Pueblo 152 were selected for further testing and use in improving the nitrate tolerant nodulating characteristic of bean.  相似文献

Cultivating dinitrogen-fixing legume trees with crops in agroforestry is a relatively common N management practice in the Neotropics. The objective of this study was to assess the N2 fixation potential of three important Neotropical agroforestry tree species, Erythrina poeppigiana, Erythrina fusca, and Inga edulis, under semi-controlled field conditions. The study was conducted in the humid tropical climate of the Caribbean coastal plain of Costa Rica. In 2002, seedlings of I. edulis and Vochysia guatemalensis were planted in one-meter-deep open-ended plastic cylinders buried in soil within hedgerows of the same species. Overall tree spacing was 1 × 4 m to simulate a typical alley-cropping design. The 15N was applied as (NH4)2SO4 at 10% 15N atom excess 15 days after planting at the rate of 20 kg [N] ha−1. In 2003, seedlings of E. poeppigiana, E. fusca, and V. guatemalensis were planted in the same field using the existing cylinders. The 15N application was repeated at the rate of 20 kg [N] ha−1 15 days after planting and 10 kg [N] ha−1 was added three months after planting. Trees were harvested 9 months after planting in both years. The 15N content of leaves, branches, stems, and roots was determined by mass spectrometry. The percentage of atmospheric N fixed out of total N (%Nf) was calculated based on 15N atom excess in leaves or total biomass. The difference between the two calculation methods was insignificant for all species. Sixty percent of I. edulis trees fixed N2; %Nf was 57% for the N2-fixing trees. Biomass production and N yield were similar in N2-fixing and non-N2-fixing I. edulis. No obvious cause was found for why not all I. edulis trees fixed N2. All E. poeppigiana and E. fusca trees fixed N2; %Nf was ca. 59% and 64%, respectively. These data were extrapolated to typical agroforestry systems using published data on N recycling by the studied species. Inga edulis may recycle ca. 100 kg ha−1 a−1 of N fixed from atmosphere to soil if only 60% of trees fix N2, E. poeppigiana 60–160 kg ha−1 a−1, and E. fusca ca. 80 kg ha−1 a−1.  相似文献

15N labelled (NH4)2SO4 was applied to barley at 5 g N m−2 (50 kg N ha−1) in microplots at sowing to study the timing of the N losses and the contribution of soil and fertilizer N to the plant. Water treatments included rainfed and irrigation at 45–50 mm deficit beginning in the spring. Recovery of15N in the plant increased to a maximum of about 20% within 91 days after sowing (DAS 91) and then remained constant. Approximately 16% (0.8 g N m−2) of the fertilizer was in the stem and leaves at DAS 91 and this N was subsequently redistributed to the head. At maturity, approximately 75% of the15N assimilated by the tops was recovered in the grain. Soil N contributed 3.6 g N m−2 to the head; 2.2 g N m−2 was remobilized from the stem and leaves, and the balance, approximately 1.4 g N m−2, was taken up from the soil between DAS 69 to 91. Effects of irrigation treatments on N accumulation were not significant. Residual15N fertilizer in the soil decreased with time from sowing, and at maturity 40% of the applied N was recovered in the surface 0.15 m.15N movement to depth was limited and less than 5% of the fertilizer was recovered below 0.15 m. Irrigation had no effect on the15N recovery at depth. Total recovery of the15N varied between 60 and 67% and implies that 33–40% was lost from the soil-plant system. The total recovery in the soil and plant was not affected by time or irrigation in the interval DAS 39 to 134. Losses occurred before DAS 39 when crop uptake of N was small and soil mineral N content was high. There was an apparent loss of 1.9 g fertilizer N m−2 (i.e. 38% of that applied) between DAS 1 and 15. This loss occurred before crop emergence when rainfall provided conditions suitable for denitrification.  相似文献

This study examined the nitrogen (N) dynamics of a black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP)-dominated chronosequence in Manitoba, Canada. The seven sites studied each contained separate well- and poorly drained stands, originated from stand-killing wildfires, and were between 3 and 151 years old. Our goals were to (i) measure total N concentration ([N]) of all biomass components and major soil horizons; (ii) compare N content and select vegetation N cycle processes among the stands; and (iii) examine relationships between ecosystem C and N cycling for these stands. Vegetation [N] varied significantly by tissue type, species, soil drainage, and stand age; woody debris [N] increased with decay state and decreased with debris size. Soil [N] declined with horizon depth but did not vary with stand age. Total (live + dead) biomass N content ranged from 18.4 to 99.7 g N m−2 in the well-drained stands and 37.8–154.6 g N m−2 in the poorly drained stands. Mean soil N content (380.6 g N m−2) was unaffected by stand age. Annual vegetation N requirement (5.9 and 8.4 g N m−2 yr−1 in the middle-aged well- and poorly drained stands, respectively) was dominated by trees and fine roots in the well-drained stands, and bryophytes in the poorly drained stands. Fraction N retranslocated was significantly higher in deciduous than evergreen tree species, and in older than younger stands. Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) was significantly lower in bryophytes than in trees, and in deciduous than in evergreen trees. Tree NUE increased with stand age, but overall stand NUE was roughly constant (∼ ∼150 g g−1 N) across the entire chronosequence.  相似文献

The differences in pigment levels, photosynthetic activity and the chlorophyll fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd (as indicator of photosynthetic rates) of green sun and shade leaves of three broadleaf trees (Platanus acerifolia Willd., Populus alba L., Tilia cordata Mill.) were compared. Sun leaves were characterized by higher levels of total chlorophylls a + b and total carotenoids x + c as well as higher values for the weight ratio chlorophyll (Chl) a/b (sun leaves 3.23–3.45; shade leaves: 2.74–2.81), and lower values for the ratio chlorophylls to carotenoids (a + b)/(x + c) (with 4.44–4.70 in sun leaves and 5.04–5.72 in shade leaves). Sun leaves exhibited higher photosynthetic rates P N on a leaf area basis (mean of 9.1–10.1 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1) and Chl basis, which correlated well with the higher values of stomatal conductance G s (range 105–180 mmol m−2 s−1), as compared to shade leaves (G s range 25–77 mmol m−2 s−1; P N: 3.2–3.7 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1). The higher photosynthetic rates could also be detected via imaging the Chl fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd, which possessed higher values in sun leaves (2.8–3.0) as compared to shade leaves (1.4–1.8). In addition, via R Fd images it was shown that the photosynthetic activity of the leaves of all trees exhibits a large heterogeneity across the leaf area, and in general to a higher extent in sun leaves than in shade leaves.  相似文献

Cereal-legume mixtures are frequently the best management decision for forage production instead of growing crops in pure stands. Nitrogen fertilization of cereal-legume mixtures is questionable since combined nitrogen could depress N2 fixation by legumes. The objectives of this study were (1) to examine the effect of N fertilization on N2 fixation by vetch and field peas in pure and in mixed stands with oats, and (2) to examine if there is any transfer of N from legumes to associated cereals. The field experiment was conducted for two growing seasons. The treatments were pure stands of vetch, pea and oats, and the mixtures of the two legumes with oats at the seeding ratios 90:10 and 75:25, fertilized with labelled15N at the rates of 15 and 90 kg N ha−1. Nitrogen fertilization of 90 kg N ha−1 suppressed N2 fixation in both legumes grown in pure and in mixed stands. Crops grown in mixtures in many instances had lower atom %15N excess. Whether this was due to high N2 fixation in the case of legume and transfer in the case of oat or the differences were due to practical problems of the15N technique is not clearly shown by the results, so based on the literature the aspect is discussed as well as the precautions which should be considered in using the15N technique in such studies.  相似文献

This study is the first to investigate quantitative effects of plant community composition and diversity on N2 fixation in legumes. N2 fixation in three perennial Trifolium species grown in field plots with varied number of neighbouring species was evaluated with the 15N natural abundance method (two field sites, several growing seasons, no N addition) and the isotope dilution method (one site, one growing season, 5 g N m−2). The proportion of plant N derived from N2 fixation, pNdfa, was generally high, but the N addition decreased pNdfa, especially in species-poor communities. Also following N addition, the presence of grasses in species-rich communities increased pNdfa in T. hybridum and T. repens L., while legume abundance had the opposite effect. In T. repens, competition for light from grasses appeared to limit growth and thereby the amount of N2 fixed at the plant level, expressed as mg N2 fixed per sown seed. We conclude that the occurrence of diversity effects seems to be largely context dependent, with soil N availability being a major determinant, and that species composition and functional traits are more important than species richness regarding how neighbouring plant species influence N2 fixation in legumes.  相似文献
