Salt marsh communities are known for well-defined species zonation patterns. Lower limits of plant growth are thought to be set by an ability to tolerate anoxic sediments, but the physiological differences between species have not previously been examined. To investigate responses to anoxic sediments, several estuarine species were grown in greenhouse experiments to compare how respiratory processes were affected by flooding. Metabolic characteristics related to respiration and anoxia tolerance were studied in the emergent estuarine species Spartina alterniflora, S. anglica, S. densiflora, S. foliosa, S. alterniflora × S. foliosa hybrids, S. patens, and Distichlis spicata and compared to the inland species maize (Zea mays). All species showed a strong ability to respire anaerobically, indicating flooding tolerance. High intertidal marsh species had significantly higher root aerobic respiration enzyme activities compared to low intertidal species that may suggest lower aerobic demand in low marsh species. Some higher marsh species showed an apparent high sensitivity to sulfide that may be related to high cytochrome c oxidase activities. In contrast, the low marsh species S. alterniflora and S. anglica had lower aerobic respiration enzyme activities and a lower sensitivity to sulfide. Thus differences in aerobic demand and sulfide sensitivity may influence estuarine species zonation.  相似文献

Snails in the closely related trochid genera Phorcus Risso, 1826 and Osilinus Philippi, 1847 are ecologically important algal grazers in the intertidal zone of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Here we present the first complete molecular phylogeny for these genera, based on the nuclear 28S rRNA gene and the mitochondrial 16S rRNA and COI genes, and show that the current classification is erroneous. We recognize nine species in a single genus, Phorcus: estimated by BEAST analysis, this arose 30 (±10) Ma; it consists of two subgenera, Phorcus and Osilinus, which we estimate diverged 14 (±4.5) Ma. Osilinus kotschyi, from the Arabian and Red Seas, is not closely related and is tentatively referred to Priotrochus Fischer, 1879. Our phylogeny allows us to address biogeographical questions concerning the origins of the Mediterranean and Macaronesian species of this group. The former appear to have evolved from Atlantic ancestors that invaded the Mediterranean on several occasions after the Zanclean Flood, which ended the Messinian Salinity Crisis 5.3 Ma; whereas the latter arose from several colonizations of mainland Atlantic ancestors within the last 3 (±1.5) Ma.  相似文献

Morphological and quantitative characteristics of the growth variability of two Parvancorina species were analyzed based on new abundant material from the Vendian of the White Sea. Growth variability in this problematic taxon appears to be wider than previously suggested. We found allometric growth in the White Sea population of P. minchami Glaessner, 1958, in contrast to isometric growth in Australian representatives of the species. Another White Sea species, P. sagitta Ivantsov, 2004, shows gradual formation of anchor-shaped structure in juveniles. Based on Australian material, it was previously believed that this structure did not change during ontogeny. These two distinctive features together with a strong variability of age-related measurements distinguish Parvancorina from other early arthropods (Scania, Primicaris), and cast doubt on the growth pattern as an argument in favor of the arthropodan nature of Parvancorina.  相似文献

Aquatic plants frequently encounter multiple stresses under natural conditions. Nuttall's water weed, Elodea nuttallii (Planch.) is a submerged aquatic macrophyte which has flexible ability to use different nutrient sources from various environments. However, recently the growth of E. nuttallii has been declining in waters of Japan and in the Chesapeake Bay, a large estuary in the United States. In the present experiment, we studied growth and survival capabilities of the plant under a gradient of redox conditions; from highly oxic (+400 to +440 mV) to extremely reduced (−180 to −120 mV) conditions. Reduced environment was prepared by adding glucose to growth medium and nitrogen gas bubbling, while the oxic environment was brought about by atmospheric air bubbling. In comparison to the oxic environment, growth rate and carbon–nitrogen content of the plants were significantly affected negatively at hypoxic and anoxic conditions. In hypoxic and anoxic environments, indole acetic acid (IAA), tissue nitrogen and chlorophyll levels were down-regulated, whereas hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), indole acetic acid oxidase (IAAO) and peroxidase (POD) levels were up-regulated. It was also found that high NH4–N concentrations (10–40 ppm) affect the growth rate and biochemical parameters of the plant; however, in hypoxic and anoxic treatments the effects were more severe. We conclude that E. nuttallii is poorly tolerant to hypoxia/anoxia. Moreover, oxygen stress combined with high ammonium concentration act as important factors influencing distribution and abundance of this species.  相似文献

The composition of photosynthetic pico and nanoeukaryotes was investigated in the North East Pacific and the Arctic Ocean with special emphasis on the Beaufort Sea during the MALINA cruise in summer 2009. Photosynthetic populations were sorted using flow cytometry based on their size and pigment fluorescence. Diversity of the sorted photosynthetic eukaryotes was determined using terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis and cloning/sequencing of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene. Picoplankton was dominated by Mamiellophyceae, a class of small green algae previously included in the prasinophytes: in the North East Pacific, the contribution of an Arctic Micromonas ecotype increased steadily northward becoming the only taxon occurring at most stations throughout the Beaufort Sea. In contrast, nanoplankton was more diverse: North Pacific stations were dominated by Pseudo-nitzschia sp. whereas those in the Beaufort Sea were dominated by two distinct Chaetoceros species as well as by Chrysophyceae, Pelagophyceae and Chrysochromulina spp.. This study confirms the importance of Arctic Micromonas within picoplankton throughout the Beaufort Sea and demonstrates that the photosynthetic picoeukaryote community in the Arctic is much less diverse than at lower latitudes. Moreover, in contrast to what occurs in warmer waters, most of the key pico- and nanoplankton species found in the Beaufort Sea could be successfully established in culture.  相似文献

Denitrification is a microbial process during which nitrate or nitrite is reduced under anaerobic condition to gaseous nitrogen. The Arabian Sea contains one of the major pelagic denitrification zones and in addition to this, denitrification also takes places along the continental shelf. Prokaryotic microorganisms were considered to be the only players in this process. However recent studies have shown that higher microeukaryotes such as fungi can also adapt to anaerobic mode of respiration and reduce nitrate to harmful green house gases such as NO and N2O. In this study we examined the distribution and biomass of fungi in the sediments of the seasonal anoxic region off Goa from two stations. The sampling was carried out in five different periods from October 2005, when dissolved oxygen levels were near zero in bottom waters to March 2006. We isolated mycelial fungi, thraustochytrids and yeasts. Species of Aspergillus and thraustochytrids were dominant. Fungi were isolated under aerobic, as well as anaerobic conditions from different seasons. Four isolates were examined for their denitrification activity. Two cultures obtained from the anoxic sediments showed better growth under anaerobic condition than the other two cultures that were isolated from oxic sediments. Our preliminary results suggest that several species of fungi can grow under oxygen deficient conditions and participate in denitrification processes.  相似文献

The Red Sea has had a profound biogeographic effect on organisms with Afro-Asian distributions, resulting in complex patterns of admixture on the Arabian Peninsula. We investigate the phylogenetic affinities of a monitor lizard (Varanus yemenensis) restricted to the southwestern Arabian Peninsula by sequencing all African monitor species and several Asian monitor species for the mitochondrial gene ND2 and the nuclear marker RAG-1. We find evidence that V. yemenensis is of African origin, being most closely related to the white-throat monitor, V. albigularis, an African species complex distributed from the Horn of Africa to southern Africa. Using divergence-dating analyses, we investigate several biogeographic hypotheses to infer the likely mechanism of colonization of the Arabian Peninsula by this species. Our results reveal that both dispersal across a southern land bridge and overwater dispersal are potential explanations. The patterns observed in V. yemenensis are contrasted with other taxa having similar Afro-Arabian disjunct distributions to better understand the complex biogeographic history of this region.  相似文献

A purple sulfur bacterium, strain SW26, was isolated in pure culture from intertidal sediments from the Sylt-Rømø Basin, German Wadden Sea, sharing many properties with validated Marichromatium species, but differing significantly by possessing a plasmid, by tolerating up to 16 mM sulfide, and up to 44 °C for growth. Strain SW26 has a DNA base composition of 68.3 mol% G+C, a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of >99% to those of Marichromatium species, and shows the highest level of genomic relationship with Marichromatium gracile, despite its remarkably different phenotypic characters. Based upon high genomic similarity but different physiological properties of strain SW26 with respect to the type strain of M. gracile, a novel biotype, designated as M. gracile biotype thermosulfidiphilum is described.  相似文献

A recent molecular phylogeny of the Arid clade of the genus Hemidactylus revealed that the recently described H. saba and two unnamed Hemidactylus species from Sinai, Saudi Arabia and Yemen form a well-supported monophyletic group within the Arabian radiation of the genus. The name ‘Hemidactylus saba species group’ is suggested for this clade. According to the results of morphological comparisons and the molecular analyses using two mitochondrial (12S and cytb) and four nuclear (cmos, mc1r, rag1, rag2) genes, the name Hemidactylus granosus Heyden, 1827 is resurrected from the synonymy of H. turcicus for the Sinai and Saudi Arabian species. The third species of this group from Yemen is described formally as a new species H. ulii sp. n. The phylogenetic relationships of the members of ‘Hemidactylus saba species group’ are evaluated and the distribution and ecology of individual species are discussed.  相似文献

In connection with the problems of identification of certain species of the genus Ponticola, and especially their juveniles, morphological and genetic studies of gobies collected in the northwestern part of the Black Sea basin were carried out using literature data and museum collections. Karyological data indicate a distinct species status of western (P. odessicus) and eastern (P. eurycephalus) mushroom gobies; the range of the latter includes not only the Sea of Azov but also waters of the Black Sea coast of the Crimean Peninsula; these conclusions are supported by preliminary molecular genetic studies. Based on the obtained results of intraspecific morphological variability of species, we propose morphological characteristics for identification of adult P. syrman and P. odessicus, as well as a specific set of characteristics to identify juvenile (body length less than 50 mm) P. syrman, P. kessleri, and P. odessicus. We reveal differences in the karyotype structure of P. syrman from populations of the Sasyk Lake and the Don River, which do not differ in terms of external morphological characteristics and variability of cytochrome b haplotypes. The need for further research of phylogeography and morphological and karyological variability of P. syrman sensu lato is assumed.  相似文献

The family Xeniidae (Octocorallia) constitutes an abundant benthic component on many Indo-West Pacific coral reefs and is ecologically important in the Red Sea. The genus Ovabunda Alderslade, 2001 was recently established to accommodate previous Xenia species with sclerites comprised of a mass of minute corpuscle-shaped microscleres. The aim of the present study was to examine type material of Xenia species in order to verify their generic affiliation. We present here a comprehensive account of the genus Ovabunda, using scanning electron microscopy to depict sclerite microstructure. We assign three Xenia species to the genus: O. ainex comb. n., O. gohari comb. n., and O. crenata comb. n.; and synonymize several other species of Ovabunda. We provide a key to Ovabunda species and conclude that they are mainly confined to the Red Sea, with some occurrence in the West Indian Ocean.  相似文献

Molecular analysis of green-tide-forming macroalgae in the Yellow Sea   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In the summer of 2008, free-floating green algae bloomed in the Yellow Sea. Samples were collected in a wide area (119°32′-122°00′E, 32°25′-36°49′N). We calculated the sequence divergences of nuclear ITS, chloroplast rbcL, and psbA data of free-floating samples collected from the Yellow Sea and Ulvaceae from Europe and Japan. In the ITS sequence, 19 out of the 21 Yellow Sea samples of 2008 were identical to those of a sample taken at Qingdao in 2007. A low divergence (0.2%) was found in remaining two samples. Similar evidence was shown by pairwise distances of rbcL and psbA gene sequence data, implying the uniformity of the Yellow Sea blooms in 2007 and 2008. The ITS sequence of the Yellow Sea samples differed 8.1-10.8% from free-floating Enteromorpha or Ulva reported worldwide. ITS-based molecular phylogenetic results and rbcL sequence data grouped the free-floating alga in the Yellow Sea into one clade with Enteromorpha procera, Enteromorpha linza and Enteromorpha prolifera. Furthermore, both morphological characteristics and ribotype network of the ITS sequences imply that the blooming algae in 2007 and 2008 were E. prolifera. The haplotypes of the Yellow Sea free-floating E. prolifera are closely related to those from the Japanese coast but less to European and American algae.  相似文献

Anisakiasis, a human infection of Anisakis L3 larvae, is one of the common foodborne parasitic diseases in Korea. Studies on the identification of anisakid larvae have been performed in the country, but most of them have been focused on morphological identification of the larvae. In this study, we analyzed the molecular characteristics of 174 Anisakis type I larvae collected from 10 species of fish caught in 3 different sea areas in Korea. PCR-RFLP and sequence analyses of rDNA ITS and mtDNA cox1 revealed that the larvae showed interesting distribution patterns depending on fish species and geographical locations. Anisakis pegreffii was predominant in fish from the Yellow Sea and the South Sea. Meanwhile, both A. pegreffii and A. simplex sensu stricto (A. simplex s.str.) larvae were identified in fish from the East Sea, depending on fish species infected. These results suggested that A. pegreffii was primarily distributed in a diverse species of fish in 3 sea areas around Korea, but A. simplex s.str. was dominantly identified in Oncorhynchus spp. in the East Sea.  相似文献

The Arabian species of the Tetramorium squaminode-group are treated. Tetramorium squaminode Santschi, 1911 is recorded for the first time from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula. Keys to the two Arabian species of the Tetramorium squaminode-group, Tetramorium latinode Collingwood & Agosti, 1996 and Tetramorium squaminode, based on worker and queen castes, are given and a regional distribution map is provided. Port landing specimens of torpedo scad, Megalaspis cordyla were collected at monthly intervals from August 2013 to June 2014 from the northern Arabian Sea coast of Pakistan. The life history characteristics revealed that torpedo scad has a prolonged breeding season which occurred with two peaks: from May to June and from November to February. The spawning seasonality was also validated with microscopic gonad examination.The highest GSI value was noted in May and January whereas the lowest in November was recorded for both sexes. The age at which individuals of both sexes become 50% mature (t50) was estimated as 2.44 year. Life span (tmax) calculated as 3.96 years for male and females. The size of 270 and 265 mm at which 50% individuals attained sexual maturity (L50) was determined for males and females respectively. The reproductive potential (fecundity)was made from ten ripe females ranged from 29–43.8 cm TL and weighing 220–540 g of IV–V developmental stage was enumerated as 32306–236677 eggs (CV = 2.135) with an average number of eggs 86544 counted per ripe female/season. This study contains fundamental data of an important fish species in the northern Arabian Sea coast of Pakistan. It provides vital information to the fisheries managers for implementation on sustainable use of the resource during spawning season.  相似文献

Sequences from 86 fungal genomes and from the two outgroup genomes Arabidopsis thaliana and Drosophila melanogaster were analyzed to construct a robust molecular phylogeny of thermophilic fungi, which are potentially rich sources of industrial enzymes. To provide experimental reference points, growth characteristics of 22 reported thermophilic or thermotolerant fungi, together with eight mesophilic species, were examined at four temperatures: 22 °C, 34 °C, 45 °C, and 55 °C. Based on the relative growth performances, species with a faster growth rate at 45 °C than at 34 °C were classified as thermophilic, and species with better or equally good growth at 34 °C compared to 45 °C as thermotolerant. We examined the phylogenetic relationships of a diverse range of fungi, including thermophilic and thermotolerant species, using concatenated amino acid sequences of marker genes mcm7, rpb1, and rpb2 obtained from genome sequencing projects. To further elucidate the phylogenetic relationships in the thermophile-rich orders Sordariales and Eurotiales, we used nucleotide sequences from the nuclear ribosomal small subunit (SSU), the 5.8S gene with internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 (ITS 1 and 2), and the ribosomal large subunit (LSU) to include additional species for analysis. These phylogenetic analyses clarified the position of several thermophilic taxa. Thus, Myriococcum thermophilum and Scytalidium thermophilum fall into the Sordariales as members of the Chaetomiaceae, Thermomyces lanuginosus belongs to the Eurotiales, Malbranchea cinnamomea is a member of the Onygenales, and Calcarisporiella thermophila is assigned to the basal fungi close to the Mucorales. The mesophilic alkalophile Acremonium alcalophilum clusters with Verticillium albo-atrum and Verticillium dahliae, placing them in the recently established order Glomerellales. Taken together, these data indicate that the known thermophilic fungi are limited to the Sordariales, Eurotiales, and Onygenales in the Ascomycota and the Mucorales with possibly an additional order harbouring C. thermophila in the basal fungi. No supporting evidence was found for thermophilic species belonging to the Basidiomycota.  相似文献

A new scleractinian coral species, Pachyseris inattesa sp. n., is described from the Red Sea. Despite a superficial resemblance with some species in the agariciid genus Leptoseris with which it has been previously confused, P. inattesa sp. n. has micro-morphological characters typical of the genus Pachyseris. This genus, once part of the Agariciidae, is comprised of five extant species and is widely distributed throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific. It is currently incertae sedis as a result of recent molecular analysis and appears to be closely related to the Euphylliidae. A molecular phylogenetic reconstruction including P. inattesa sp. n., the genus type species P. rugosa, and P. speciosa, all present in the Red Sea, was performed using the mitochondrial intergenic spacer between COI and 16S-rRNA. The results confirm that P. inattesa sp. n. is a monophyletic lineage closely related to the other Pachyseris species examined.  相似文献

We studied the distribution of the “bitter-crab” syndrome, a disease caused by the parasitic dinoflagellate Hematodinium sp., in eight commercial species of crabs in the west of the Bering and Chukchi seas. The crabs (25 388 individuals) were sampled during bottom trawl surveys of July?September 2010 and October?November 2012. The disease was first identified visually by a color change of the exoskeleton and the hemolymph of the animals and then using microscope analysis of hemolymph samples. Infestation was detected in crabs of three species, Chionoecetes opilio, C. bairdi, and Paralithodes platypus. The prevalence of the disease (the percent of infected individuals relative to all of those examined) in C. bairdi and P. platypus was very low, 0.1 and 0.3%, respectively. Infestation was widespread among C. opilio, its peak in the Bering Sea was in the fall. The average prevalence of the crab disease in different areas of the Bering Sea ranged from 0.8 to 10.8%. A high rate of crab infection was recorded in the Korfa Bay. In the Chukchi Sea, the average prevalence was 2%. Infestation by Hematodinium sp. was not revealed in the deep-sea snow crabs Chionoecetes tanneri and C. angulatus, and in three species of lithodid crabs, Paralithodes camtschaticus, P. brevipes, and Lithodes couesi. This can be explained by the small sample volume and/or ecology of these species, since the disease was registered in other areas in four of them.  相似文献

Characteristics of seven Atlantic-Mediterranean fish species are provided. Of them, four (gobies—yellow-headed Gobius xanthocephalus and red-mouthed G. cruentatus, incognito blenny Parablennius incognitus, and greater pipefish Syngnathus acus) were either first found in the Black Sea coastal zone of the Crimea, or their findings were doubted, and three species (thin-lipped grey mullet Liza ramada, European barracuda Sphyraena sphyraena, and Black Sea salmon Salmo trutta labrax) are very rare. Over the last decade, the authors recorded 15 fish species; of them, seven Atlantic-Mediterranean species have dispersed along the Crimean coasts by now, one endemic of the far eastern seas (chameleon goby Tridentiger trigonocephalus) has naturalized in Sevastopol Bay, four invading species, freshwater by origin, permanently occur in the estuary zones of the peninsula; the remaining three species are known from single findings and apparently belong to the category of accidental fish. An increase in the species composition of ichthyofauna off the Black Sea coasts of the Crimea results from the on-going process of mediterranization—the invasion in the estuary of freshwater tolerant species at the expense of accidental species that penetrated here either independently or with ballast waters.  相似文献
