Brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) and sculpin (Cottus gobio L.) predation on the cased limnephilid larvae Glyphotaelius pellucidus (Retz.) (weak, broad leaf case), Limnephilus pantodapus McLachl. (weak, long cylindrical leaf case), L. rhombicus (L.) (rigid, hedgehog case) and Potamophylax cingulatus (Steph.) (rigid, cylindrical mineral case) was studied in the laboratory. The proportion of larvae ingested was significantly higher in brown trout than in sculpin for all four prey species. Brown trout captured larvae of all four species with equal success, but the higher number of unsuccessful captures resulted in a higher survival rate for P. cingulatus. It was significantly more difficult for sculpin than for brown trout to capture L. pantodapus larvae and to ingest all species except L. rhombicus. P. cingulatus larvae were never ingested by sculpins, and had the highest survival rate after capture by both fish species. In brown trout, the handling time of L. pantodapus was significantly longer than that of P. cingulatus. Sculpin had a significantly longer handling time of G. pellucidus than brown trout. L. pantodapus and L. rhombicus larvae feigned dead significantly longer than did those of G. pellucidus and P. cingulatus upon attacks from sculpins. L. rhombicus larvae also feigned dead for a long time upon attacks from brown trout. The survival rate of a larva attacked by sculpin or brown trout depends on both case rigidity as well as its behaviour. Brown trout was a more successful predator of cased caddis larvae than sculpin.

Behaviour of drifting insect larvae
The larval drift behaviour of 23 species representing Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera was investigated in the laboratory using different current regimes. Mayfly nymphs often performed swimming, while caddis larvae were reluctant to do so. Stonefly nymphs were intermediate. In mayflies swimming seemed to be used to reach the substrate as soon as possible. In contrast most stonefly nymphs by swimming prolonged the time spent in the water column. Modes of swimming and sinking posture differed markedly between the orders. Living passively sinking animals often reached bottom faster than dead control specimens, so consequently behaviour did not always express itself in activity. Some caddis larvae spun adherent anchor lines. Differences among taxa seemed more important in explaining swimming activity compared to preferred habitats (as stream, river and lake) in each species. However, observed differences among closely related species indicated subtle differences related to microhabitat to be of profound importance in explaining the alternative behavioural strategies used.

Two experiments on the nymphal predation of Podisus maculiventris were conducted using Spodoptera litura larvae as prey. First experiment: The predator nymphs divided into three groups were reared individually from second instar to adult in a small vessel. Each nymph in the groups 1, 2 and 3 was allowed to attack the serially growing larvae (these were supplied at the rate of one per day) from 3-, 5- and 7-day old after hatching, respectively. The first prey used for the group 1 was so small that it was not only insufficient to satiate the predator but also was difficult to be searched out. But these disadvantages were soon recuperated due to the rapid growth of the prey and all nymphs could survive to adults. The survival rate of third and fourth instar nymphs in the group 3 was severely affected by vigorous counterattack of older prey larvae. Second experiment: The predator nymphs were individually reared either in a small vessel or in a large one at various rates of food supply (the prey larvae of 7-day old were used). The functional response curves obtained for each instar of the predator took a saturation type within a certain range of the prey density. The saturation level specific to each instar was generally higher for the predator reared in the large vessel than in the small one. The functional response of fourth and fifth instar nymphs was accelerated at a high prey density, viz. 16 larvae per vessel. Even at the low rate of food supply, viz. one larva per day per predator, the predator nymphs could survive to adults, but the size of resultant adults were abnormally small.

In laboratory experiments with full-grown larvae of three Trichoptera species (Limnephilus rhombicus, Potamophylax rotundipennis and Sericostoma pedemontanum) in an artificial stream, four types of bottom material were provided in combination with various currents. Only L. rhombicus reacted to low current speed (9 cm/sec), moving downstream when a bottom current was present. L. rhombicus and P. rotundipennis showed a distinct preference for pebbles over sand and for coarse pebbles over crushed brick. S. pedemontanum burrowed under pebbles or stones. L. rhombicus showed a distinct tendency to climb onto the dividing gauze or vertical sticks. All three species preferred shaded parts of the experimental stream to the illuminated parts. The results are related to field observations. Limnephilus rhombicus occurs in stagnant and slow-running waters. Potamophylax rotundipennis is restricted to rather fast-running streams with a perpetual flow, while Sericostoma pedemontanum occurs in the same type of stream.

Abstract

Growth of first instar Costelytra zealandica larvae was significantly reduced after 6 weeks when reared on an artificial diet containing 0.3 and 1% soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI), 0.1% and 0.3% potato inhibitor II, and 0.3% potato protease inhibitor I and cowpea trypsin inhibitor. Limabean trypsin inhibitor at 1% significantly stimulated growth compared with that on diet with corresponding levels of added casein. A direct relationship between increased free-trypsin activity and decreased larval growth was observed. Sequential measurement of enzyme activity in third instar larvae feeding on SBTI was compared with that of larvae feeding on casein. The increase in enzyme activity was observed after 14 days in larvae feeding on SBTI. Larvae preferred to feed on SBTI-free diet when given a choice between diet containing this inhibitor at 0.3% and added casein at 0.3%.

Three species of hemipteran predators preyed differently upon 1st instarHeliothis punctiger Wallengren larvae.Cermatulus nasalis consumed more larvae thanOechalia schellenbergii which consumed more larvae thanTropiconabis nigrolineatus. All the species consumed significantly less 1st instar larvae on plants than what they consumed in Petri-dishes. Fifth instar predators showed significant differences in terms of prey consumption due to sex independent of searching conditions. Only 4th and 5th instars ofT. nigrolineatus attacked and captured 2nd instars ofH. punctiger larvae. The other 2 species however readily attacked and consumed 2nd instarH. punctiger larvae. Their prey consumption was similar in Petri-dishes and on plants. Only 5th instars ofT. nigrolineatus could subdue and capture 3rd instarH. punctiger larvae. Second instar pentatomids captured just one 3rd instar larva but older instars killed and ate more. Fourth instarH. punctiger larvae were immune to attacks by allT. nigrolineatus and younger pentatomids due to their defense ploys but 5th instar pentatomids could subdue and capture them. None of the predators captured 5th instarH. punctiger larvae except few 5th instar females ofC. naslis andO. schellenbergii.

This paper describes the use of a continuous-flow chamber for maintaining small and fragile fish larvae and their prey in a healthy state and under suitable conditions over a 24 h period for studies on prey preferences. Survival of golden perch (Macquaria ambigua Richardson) larvae and prey was high and ten replicates on food preferences were carried out simultaneously. The larvae preferred small Daphnia carinata King (780–860 m) over larger ones (2000–3120 and 3680–5440 m) and preferred cladocerans (Daphnia carinata King and Moina micrura Kurz) over calanoids (Boeckella de Guerne & Richard). The chamber is also suitable for studies on feeding behaviour and diet requirements of fish larvae.

1. We investigated the diet and prey electivity of Rhyacophila obliterata, a slow‐moving invertebrate predator capable of hunting in high‐flow microhabitats, and quantified the components of the predation sequence of fifth‐instar larvae foraging on mobile (Baetis mayflies, Amphinemura stoneflies) versus semi‐sessile (larval blackflies) prey. 2. In the field, fifth‐instar Rhyacophila consistently took more larval blackflies than more mobile prey. In behavioural trials, the number of attacks by Rhyacophila differed significantly between prey types, mobile prey being attacked more often than blackflies. Capture success, by contrast, was highest for blackflies, whereas Amphinemura and Baetis were rarely captured. In mixed‐prey feeding trials, Rhyacophila showed strong preference for blackflies and equally strong avoidance of Amphinemura and Baetis. 3. For mobile prey, the risk of being captured by this sluggish predator is very low, so they can afford to be in close contact with it. Rhyacophila was almost unable to capture any other prey but blackflies, resulting in strong passive selection for blackflies. 4. Therefore, the diet of fifth‐instar Rhyacophila can be predicted from laboratory observations and prey behaviour is the major determinant of the diet of this invertebrate predator.

As physiological factors may influence the predatory behavior of insects, this study was designed to evaluate the possible impact that hunger has on the search path of a polyphagous predator: Deraeocoris lutescens Schilling (Heteroptera: Miridae). D. lutescens was fed a diet of Rhopalosiphum padi (Linné) (Homoptera: Aphididae) nymphs and Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs at 21±1 °C and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D). After moulting, third and fifth instar nymphs and adults were placed in Petri dishes containing an abundant food source for 24 h. After 24 h, the food was removed and groups were randomly assigned to increasing periods of prey deprivation. Each D. lutescens nymph or adult was placed at the center of an empty arena and its searching path was recorded to calculate different path parameters and to determine the type of movement mode adopted. Results show an effect of starvation on both nymphal and adult D. lutescens searching paths. Satiated third instar nymphs manifested an intensive search path whereas fifth instar nymphs and adults adopted an intermediate one. When starved, the extensive search path appeared early in young nymphs, and later in the last instar nymphs and adults, according to the degree of prey deprivation.

A laboratory study was made of the feeding behaviour of the ladybeetlePseudoscymnus kurohime (Miyatake) when attacking the sugar cane woolly aphidCeratovacuna lanigera Zehntner. The 1st-instar ladybeetle larva was smaller than the 1st instar aphid nymph. All larval stages of the ladybeetle sucked out the body fluids of aphids and left their emptied corpses. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd instar ladybeetle larvae mostly attacked 1st instar aphids, whereas the 4th-instar ladybeetle larvae attacked all stages of aphids. Ladybeetle adults ate mostly 1st-instar aphids. Young larvae attacked aphids in several different ways: (1) They crawled under an aphid, seized it by its underside and lifted it up. (2) They attacked new born nymphs at birth or shortly afterwards. (3) They fed on an aphid that had been captured by an older larva. The larvae preferred to seize with their mandibles the head or thorax of an aphid, while adults seized their prey by the abdomen. When attacked by an adult, 82% of the aphids secreted droplets from their abdominal cornicles, whereas only 7.2–12% secreted droplets when attacked by larvae. The 4th instar larvae more voracious than the younger larvae.

Small-sized predators in the aphidophagous guild of Aphis gossypii Glover colonies on hibiscus trees in Japan exploit aphids at low prey abundance. Scymnus (Pullus) posticalis Sicard beetles were the first predatory species to attack aphids in the spring, and their larvae co-occurred with larvae of Eupeodes freguens (Matsumura) syrphids in aphid-infested leaves of hibiscus for 3 weeks in absence of large-sized coccinellid predators. Larval interaction between Scymnus and syrphid predators was examined in relation to effectiveness of wax cover of Scymnus against predation from syrphids. Waxless first instar larvae were not protected but wax-covered larvae of second, third and fourth instars were protected from predation by syrphid larvae. The protection was lower in the second instar which has a thin wax cover and significantly higher in the third and fourth instars having a thick wax cover. In addition, larvae from which the wax was removed were significantly more vulnerable to predation. Vulnerability of Scymnus larvae to predation from syrphids was directly related to the thickness of wax cover. Results suggest that the wax cover of Scymnus larvae act as an effective defence mechanism against predation from syrphid larvae.

Little is known about Podisus distinctus (Stal) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) one of the Asopinae species with good possibilities for mass rearing and releasing against defoliator caterpillars in eucalyptus reforested areas in Brazil. We evaluated the impact of prey combinations on weight of nymphs and adults of P. distinctus. The prey were Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) and Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). The experiment was developed under 25 +/- 0.5 degrees C, 60 +/- 10% R.H. and photophase of 14 hr, with nymphs of P. distinctus individualized in Petri dishes and fed as: T1-larvae of M. domestica during its whole nymphal phase: T2-larvae of M. domestica during its II instar and of T. molitor during the other instars: T3-larvae of M. domestica during II and III instars and of T. molitor during the other instars: T4-larvae of M. domestica during II, III and IV instars and of T. molitor during the V instar; T5- larvae of T. molitor during all instars. P. distinctus presents lower weight when fed with larvae of M. domestica. For this reason it is recommended to feed P. distinctus with T. molitor during its whole nymphal phase or with larvae of M. domestica only during II and III instars and T. molitor during IV and V instars.

Males of the giant water bug, Lethocerus deyrolli, care for egg masses on vegetation above the water surface. They supply the developing eggs with water and guard them against predators. In the present study, mechanisms by which paternal care is extended were found. Males were found situated just below the water on the natal substrate (usually a stick), and the first instar nymphs were aggregated around the substrate. When disturbed, the males showed aggressive behavior, threatening the intruder with their forelegs. Nymphs up to 12 h old did not attack the offered sibling nymphs or anuran larvae, which are common prey in the field. The 24 h‐old nymphs attacked both prey animals; however, they preferred anuran larvae. Cannibalistic behavior in the nymphs was well developed 72 h after hatching, when the nymphs had already dispersed from the natal substrate. The suppression of sibling cannibalism in younger nymphs would promote the maintenance of tight nymphal aggregations and consequently extend male care in this predatory species.

The duration of intensive searching behaviour of third-instar larvae ofCoccinella septempunctata L. following feeding, and the searching behaviour of fourth instar larvae following an unsuccessful prey encounter, was determined. Even though the speed of search and track width of third instar larvae is less than that of fourth instar larvae and adults, their intensive searching behaviour was found to be of similar duration. Intensive searching behaviour was elicited even after an unsuccessful prey encounter, an important strategy for early instar larvae whose capture efficiency is low.

The prey species composition and feeding rate of the pit-making ant lion larva,Myrmeleon bore Tjeder, which inhabits open sandy areas, were examined. Not less than 30 prey species, most of which were ants, were collected during a research period of 1.5 years. First instar larvae most often (81.1%) captured ants. Although 3rd instar larvae captured larger-sized prey than individuals of any other instar, they also captured small prey. The feeding rate of 3rd instar larvae was estimated by using the frequency of observed predation (FOP; (no. of ant lions handling a prey)/(total no. of pits observed)), the prey-handling time and the rhythm of daily foraging activity. FOP ofM. bore larvae was constant on the whole from spring to autumn. It was estimated that each captured 1.25 prey per day on average during this period. This estimate, however, was the feeding rate for days on which there was no rain. Assuming that the larvae cannot capture prey due to pit destruction when there is more than 10 mm of rainfall per day, the figure was reduced to 1.03 prey/day. The estimated feeding rate was evaluated with reference to larval foraging behavior.

Predatory insects that depend upon particular prey animals are commonly regulated by the prey animal’s abundance. Nymphs of the giant water bug Kirkaldyia (=Lethocerus) deyrolli (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) are predators regarded as specialists in feeding on tadpoles. We studied the ontogenetic diet shift of aquatic nymphs by quantifying instar abundance and by analyzing captured prey and prey relative abundance during the period of rice irrigation in three localities. We also evaluated the contribution of major prey items (tadpoles, frogs, and Odonata nymphs) on specific growth rates of each nymphal stage in a rearing experiment. First to third-instar nymphs of K. deyrolli fed mainly on tadpoles, regardless of differences in prey availability. Nymphs of subsequent fourth and fifth instar stages shifted from tadpoles to other prey animals within each rice field. A rearing experiment demonstrated that giant water bug nymphs provided with tadpoles had greater specific growth rates at all nymphal stages, except for the final stage, than nymphs fed other prey (frogs and Odonata nymphs). The emergence of young K. deyrolli nymphs seemed to coincide with the period during which tadpoles became abundant in the rice fields. Consumption of tadpoles seems important to allow the nymph to complete its larval development in an unstable temporary habitat. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

The effects of prey density on survival and growth of damselfly larvae
Abstract.
  • 1 Instar 10, 11 and 12 Ischnura larvae were maintained throughout the instar on a constant food supply (Daphnia magna of a standard size).
  • 2 A very narrow range of prey availability separated cohorts in which all the larvae successfully moulted to the next instar, from those in which all the larvae died (less than one Daphnia per day in the case of instar 10).
  • 3 Larvae were able to survive long periods without food at 16°C.
  • 4 Prey availability had a marked effect on development rates, which continued to increase at prey densities well in excess of 100% survival by the larvae.
  • 5 The data on Ischnura survival and development rates are compared with previously published general models of these two components of the predators' rate of increase.
  • 6 We conclude that starvation is very unlikely to be a significant cause of mortality in the field for Ischnura (or indeed most other Odonata larvae), but that prey availability undoubtedly influences development rates. Natural selection should therefore favour larvae that forage optimally to minimize development times.

The functional responses of adult and 5th instar Pacific damsel bug,Nabis kinbergii Reuter were determined under laboratory conditions using Australian crop mirid,Sidnia kinbergi (Stal), and pea aphid,Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) as prey.Holling's (1959) type II equation was found to adequately define the functional response of this predator except when 5th instar nymphs were provided with Australian crop mirid as prey. In this instance, a type III response was found.
