Effects of prey density, prey instar, and patch size on the development of the predatory mosquito larva, Toxorhynchites towadensis, were investigated in the laboratory. Survivors of T. towadensis showed different developmental patterns in relation to prey age structure. All predatory larvae in containers with only second instar prey developed into the third instar. However, in several containers with fourth instar prey, mortality of predators was observed. During the third instar, no predatory larva died, but both prey density and prey instar significantly affected the survival of predators during their fourth instar. Large prey size promoted large predator adults, and predatory larvae which grew up in small surface containers responded by developing to large sizes than those in large containers. Larval developmental time of the predators differed in each treatment. During first and second instars, faster predator development was observed in containers with small surface areas and containing young prey individuals. However, when development was enhanced by the presence of old prey individuals, no surface effect was observed. The fastest predator development was observed with prey of mixed instars and high density. This study suggests that a small surface container containing prey of mixed instars and high density is suitable for development of predators.

We examined the effects of the presence of plant allelochemicals in prey diet, prey availability and supplemental plant material on the growth of the generalist predator Podisus maculiventris (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). We tested two different nymphal stages of this predator. Third to fourth instar nymphs and fifth instar nymphs were fed a diet of prey (Manduca sexta larvae, Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) without allelochemicals in their diet or prey fed maximal levels of allelochemicals (tomatine, rutin and chlorogenic acid) found in their host plant (Lycopersicon esculentum). The nymphs were fed prey ad libitum, once every three days, or once every five days. They were given either no supplemental plant material or a 2 cm slice of green bean pod (Phaseolus vulgaris). We also conducted another experiment with fifth instar nymphs using the same conditions, except that mean levels of allelochemicals found in the host plant were fed to prey instead of maximal levels and the prey were provided either once a day or once every five days. For all experiments, prey scarcity depressed developmental rate, weight gain and relative growth rate. Overall, there was no negative effect of allelochemicals in the diet of the prey on these variables when predators were supplied with an excess of prey, but allelochemicals in the prey diet negatively affected these predators when prey were scarce. The addition of plant material to the diet of third to fourth instar nymphs did not have any effect on developmental rate, final dry weight, or relative growth rate. However, for fifth instar nymphs, the addition of plant material negatively affected these variables. Thus, the addition of plant material to the diet of the nymphs did not alleviate the negative effects of prey scarcity or allelochemicals in prey diet.

Summary The searching and handling behaviors ofHarmonia axyridis larvae to the colony ofRhopalosiphum padi were experimentally examined and the processes of their aggregation to the prey colony was analyzed. All the instar larvae searched for the prey at random and they have no preference to the prey colony, but except the 1st instar they tend to aggregate to the plants with prey colonies. The 1st instar larvae tend to stay on the plants they once located. The 2nd to 4th instar larvae often emigrate from the plants without prey colony but seldom emigrate from the plants with prey colonies, and consequently, they aggregate to the plants with prey colonies. The expense of time to eat prey (in the 2nd and 3rd instars) and the change of searching behavior for the prey after feeding (in the 3rd and 4th instars) are responsible for the larval concentration to prey colony as a trapping effect for predators to prey colony.

1. Ontogenetic shifts in predator behaviour can affect the assessment of food‐web structure and the development of predator–prey models. Therefore, it is important to establish if the functional response and interference interactions differ between life‐stages. These hypotheses were tested by (i) comparing the functional response of second, third, fourth and fifth larval instars of Rhyacophila dorsalis, using three stream tanks with one Rhyacophila larva per tank and one of 10 prey densities between 20 and 200 larvae of Chironomus sp.; (ii) using other experiments to assess interference within instars (two to five larvae of the same instar per tank), and between pairs of different instars (one, two or three larvae per instar; total predator densities of two, four or six larvae per tank). 2. The first hypothesis was supported. The number of prey eaten by each instar increased with prey density, the relationship being described by a type II model. The curvilinear response was stronger for fourth and fifth instars than for second and third instars. Mean handling time did not change significantly with prey density, and increased with decreasing instar number from 169 s for fifth instars to 200 s for second instars. Attack rate decreased progressively with decreasing instar number. Handling time varied considerably for each predator–prey encounter, but was normally distributed for each predator instar. Variations in attack rate and handling time were related to differences in activity between instars, fourth and fifth instars being more active and aggressive than second and third instars, and having a higher food intake. 3. The second hypothesis was partially supported. In the interference experiments between larvae of the same instar or different instars, mean handling time did not change significantly with increasing predator density, and attack rate did not change for second and third instars but decreased curvilinearly for fourth and fifth instars. Interference between some instars could not be studied because insufficient second instars were available at the same time as fourth and fifth instars, and most third instars were eaten by fourth and fifth instars in the experiments. Prey capture always decreased with decreasing attack rate. Therefore, interference reduced prey consumption in fourth and fifth instars, but not in second and third instars. The varying feeding responses of different instars should be taken into account when assessing their role in predator–prey relationships in the field.

The prey species composition and feeding rate of the pit-making ant lion larva,Myrmeleon bore Tjeder, which inhabits open sandy areas, were examined. Not less than 30 prey species, most of which were ants, were collected during a research period of 1.5 years. First instar larvae most often (81.1%) captured ants. Although 3rd instar larvae captured larger-sized prey than individuals of any other instar, they also captured small prey. The feeding rate of 3rd instar larvae was estimated by using the frequency of observed predation (FOP; (no. of ant lions handling a prey)/(total no. of pits observed)), the prey-handling time and the rhythm of daily foraging activity. FOP ofM. bore larvae was constant on the whole from spring to autumn. It was estimated that each captured 1.25 prey per day on average during this period. This estimate, however, was the feeding rate for days on which there was no rain. Assuming that the larvae cannot capture prey due to pit destruction when there is more than 10 mm of rainfall per day, the figure was reduced to 1.03 prey/day. The estimated feeding rate was evaluated with reference to larval foraging behavior.

Foraging behavior of a pit-building antlion larva, Myrmeleon boreTjeder was investigated experimentally to elucidate the relation between the feeding level and pit relocation.
  1. In artificial sands constructed in the field the 3rd instar larvae of M. bore rarely changed the positions of their pits, though several antlions had moved actively until they constructed pits. The average feeding rate was 0.3 prey/day/pit, and about 60% of prey captured were ants.
  2. To examine whether or not M. bore larvae concentrate into the area where they can capture more prey, 8 antlions were released into each of 6 boxes filled with sand. I divided the sand surface of each box into two half areas, then gave prey to the pits built in a half area and gave no prey to the pits built in the other half. During the 50-day observation period, nonfed antlions never moved into the area where prey were given.
  3. The 3rd instar larvae were reared separately without food. Even under starved conditions they rarely relocated their pits until dealth. The average duration of survival period was 83.9 days.
  4. The experimental results indicate that M. bore larvae adopt a tactic of sedentary ambushing. These larvae exhibit low movement rates which are independent of prey capture rates.

Alternative feeding strategies are important in determining the lifestyle of polyphagous spider mite prodators, and could play a key role in their use for biocontrol of prey such as thrips. The small size of Amblyseius cucumeris relative to western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, limits its survival and development when this prey is the only food available. We show that when A. cucumeris nymphs were reared either alone or with a gravid female on live larvae of F. occidentalis as the only source of food, survival was increased and development was accelerated by the presence of the adult. Similar performance by predator nymphs reared alone on freshly killed thrips larvae indicated that those nymphs reared on live prey with an adult were benefiting from feeding on prey killed by the adult. Variation of the period when an adult female was present with the nymph showed that food provided as a result of the adult's preying activities was beneficial until approximately one third through nymphal development, after which protonymphs became independent predators, with good survival and rapid development when provided only with live F. occidentalis larvae. The results are discussed in relation to adult dispersal in specialist as opposed to generalist phytoseiids, and its potential manipulation in using A. cucumeris for thrips biocontrol.

The citrus mealybug, Planococcus citri (Risso) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) is a serious pest of economically important crops worldwide. The apefly, Spalgis epius (Westwood) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) is a potential predator of various species of mealybugs. Earlier investigation on its daily preying capacity and preference for prey stages on P. citri is incomplete. Hence, a study was conducted to find out the daily prey consumption ability and preference for prey stages by different larval instars of S. epius reared on P. citri in the laboratory. Through the 8-day developmental period with four larval instars, the daily prey consumption of S. epius increased from the first to the seventh day and decreased on the eighth day prior to the prepupal stage. Generally, there was a significant difference in the prey consumption on different days. When the prey stages were offered separately, the first to fourth instar larva of S. epius consumed, respectively, a mean of 199.6, 722.6, 1908.8, and 4625.6 eggs or 21.5, 77.0, 168.5, and 670.5 nymphs or 3.2, 7.2, 16.0, and 35.1 adults of P. citri. When an S. epius larva was fed on P. citri eggs, nymphs and adults separately, it consumed a mean of 7456.7 eggs, 937.6 nymphs, or 62.3 adults during its entire development. When the prey stages were offered all together, a single S. epius larva consumed 2618.4 eggs, 170.4 nymphs, and 39.7 adults of P. citri throughout its entire development. The study revealed that S. epius is a voracious predator of P. citri and thus could be utilized as a major biological control agent.

The frequency distribution of the durations of development of 516 larvae of Adalia bipunctata is unimodal, and the fast‐ and slow‐developing larvae can be identified at the beginning of the fourth (=last) instar. To determine the advantages of fast and slow development, the survival, duration of development, growth and number of aphids consumed by fast‐ and slow‐developing fourth instar larvae fed different numbers aphids were recorded. The percentages of fast‐ and slow‐developing fourth instar larvae that survived when fed 0.5, 1 or an excess of aphids per day, surprisingly, did not differ. The slow‐developing larvae of both sexes took longer to complete their development than the fast‐developing larvae when fed 1 or an excess of aphids per day, and although the weights of the fast‐ and slow‐developing fourth instar larvae differed at the beginning of the instar, they did not differ at the end of this instar when fed 1 aphid per day. However, when reared on an excess of aphids per day, the adult weights of the fast‐developing individuals was greater than that of slow‐developing individuals. The average durations for which the larvae in the two groups survived when fed 0.5 aphids/day differed with the larvae of the fast‐developing individuals surviving for 9.8 ± 0.5 days and slow‐developing individuals 17 ± 1.3 days. Assuming that it is the rate of predator biomass increase, which is maximized by evolution, a model of the relationship between the rate of development/growth of a predator and that of its prey indicates that the optimum growth rate of a predator is positively associated with that of its prey. The evolutionary implications of these results are discussed.

Another look at prey detection by coccinellids
Abstract.
  • 1 Adult and fourth instar larvae of Coccinella septempunctata (L.) were tested to see whether or not they could detect prey prior to physical contact.
  • 2 Adult predators found aphid prey and a silver foil dummy significantly faster than an X-mark on the floor of the arena covering the same area.
  • 3 Fourth instar larvae found crushed prey more quickly than the X-mark but were not able to detect whole frozen prey.
  • 4 The distances at which the predators could detect prey were calculated. This distance was found to be about 1.0 cm for the adults and 0.7 cm for the fourth instar larvae.

This study examined the feeding habits of Nephus arcuatus Kapur (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), an important predator of mealybugs in south-western Iran. The consumption capacity of male and female N. arcuatus adults was determined by their feeding on eggs, first-instar nymphs, and adult females of two destructive mealybugs, Nipaecoccus viridis (Newstead) and Planococcus citri Risso, over a 24-h period. N arcuatus consumed significantly more first-instar nymphs than eggs, and more eggs than female adults of both prey species. In addition, we also studied the developmental stage prey preference of adults reared on either N. viridis or P. citri and found that the prey preference of females did not change with the developmental stage of the mealybug. Meanwhile, the males reared on either N. viridis or P. citri showed a significant preference for the first-instar nymphs of P. citri over first-instar nymphs of N. viridis, while a preference for the eggs or adult females of these two mealybugs was not observed. This selection of first-instar nymphs by males was not tied to its previous feeding experience. Our findings suggest that prey stage, prey size and previous feeding experience had no effect on the prey selection of N. arcuatus, making it a good candidate for the biological control of mealybugs.

Availability of aphid prey in habitat is often heterogeneous in space and time and its deprivation causes severe effects on life attributes of ladybird predators. Sometimes ladybirds locate high prey biomass while on certain occasions prey biomass may be either medium/low or altogether absent. Present study has been designed in view of three prey biomass conditions in nature, viz. low, medium and high, selecting Coccinella septempunctata and Coccinella transversalis as experimental ladybirds. Results revealed that consumption, developmental and reproductive attributes of both ladybirds changed in response to prey availability. On high prey biomass larvae had higher consumption and growth rates, developed faster and had low mortality, while emerging adults were large in size, had high consumption rates and utilized prey biomass maximally on production of eggs, self maintenance and survival. In contrast low prey biomass reduced chances of larval survival and emerging adults were small in size, had poor prey consumption rates, low fecundity, egg fertility and short life span. Females exhibited triangular fecundity and egg fertility functions and plateau shaped prey consumption rate function with age, indicating towards their highest reproductive performance during middle age on three prey biomasses; being highest on high prey biomass. On three prey biomasses, females had higher body biomass conversion efficiency during pre- and post-oviposition periods and higher egg biomass conversion efficiency during oviposition period; being highest on high prey biomass. Thus middle aged ladybirds reared on high prey biomass may suppress pest populations better than those reared on low/medium prey biomass.

Prey utilization by the generalist predator Coleomegilla maculata lengi Timb. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) of three sympatric lepidopterous species was quantified in relation with prey size (age) and prey species. Based on optimal foraging theory, we argued that costs associated with the utilization of small and large prey are higher than those of intermediate prey size. As a result, we expected a higher prey consumption rate on intermediate prey size leading to a convex prey consumption curve. Laboratory experiments showed that, within a given prey instar, Coleomegilla maculata lengi preyed more on Plutella xylostella (L.) compared to Artogeia rapae (L.) and Trichoplusia ni (Hübner). Generally, prey consumption rate by Coleomegilla maculata lengi on the three prey species decreased with increasing immature prey size (age). The predation efficacy of Coleomegilla maculata lengi adults and fourth instar larvae was higher compared to younger coccinellids (L2). Although, Coleomegilla maculata lengi showed a higher level of predation on smaller immature prey, we demonstrated that it is not the optimal size range for this predator. As predicted, prey weight consumption rate by Coleomegilla maculata lengi was higher at intermediate prey size leading to a convex prey utilization curve. The beneficial impact of Coleomegilla maculata lengi predation on the host plant was also estimated by using a Protection Index that considers the differential predation caused by the coccinellids and the relative importance of each pest species in terms of plant injury. Coleomegilla maculata lengi has a more significant beneficial impact when it preys on T. ni immatures.

Summary Chaoborus crystallinus fourth-instar larvae were reared individually at 14°, 17° and 20° C under different food conditions. Daphnia magna of 1.25 mm average length served as prey. The following were measured: amount of prey ingested, larval weight gain, duration of fourth instar, body weight of the adults, and egg number per female. At a given temperature, the body weight, egg-number and developmental rate increased with food consumption. At a given food consumption, higher temperatures caused a decrease in body weight and egg number, and an increase in developmental rate. Gross production efficiencies for fourth-instar larvae were highest at temperatures around 17° C. The results clearly indicate that from an energetic point of view higher temperatures are disadvantageous. In C. crystallinus vertical migration is evidently a way of lowering the temperature to which the animals are exposed and hence optimizing food conversion into biomass and offspring production, especially if prey densities are below the saturation level.

This study examined the effects of feeding interval, access to host plants (thus, a source of sap), and plant defenses on the predatory insect, Podisus maculiventris Say (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). The experiment consisted of a 2 × 2 design with two feeding intervals (1 day or 5 days) and predators living on either tomato plants or plastic plants. Females fed every day had greater body weights and egg hatch rates than females fed every five days. Females on tomato plants lived longer than females on plastic plants. However, access to plants did not alleviate the effects of low prey level on predator weight or reproductive output. In a second experiment, third instar nymphs were placed on either tomato plants or plastic plants for four days to examine the effects of tomato trichome defenses on these predators. Nymphs on tomato plants experienced 50% mortality compared to 15% mortality for nymphs on plastic plants. Some nymphs living on tomato plants were trapped by the hairy trichomes of the plant; others had gummed up legs from the exudates of the plants’ glandular trichomes, which inhibited their movement and ability to feed on prey. Although predators appeared to benefit from feeding on tomato plants, their ability to live on the plants was negatively affected by the defensive features of the plants. The potential effects of trichome defenses on predator survival and population dynamics must be considered when evaluating the benefits of plants on insect predator life histories and efficacy as biological control agents.

The effect of temperature and photoperiod on the rate of predation of nymphs and adults of the predator Macrolophus pygmaeus was studied using Myzus persicae prey feeding on egg-plant and pepper plants. The experiments were conducted at three photoperiods (16L:8D, 12L:12D and 8L:16D), three temperatures (20, 25 and 30 °C), and at 65% r.h. The rate of predation increased with temperature. Predation rate was affected by photoperiod on pepper but not on egg-plant. Females and fifth instar nymphs were the most voracious stages followed by third and fourth instar nymphs and males. First and second instar nymphs consumed far fewer aphids. Predation rate was higher on leaves of pepper than egg-plant, especially at 30 °C. Variation in the efficacy of this predator is discussed.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the functional and numerical responses of the aphidophagous hover fly Episyrphus balteatus DeGeer (Diptera: Syrphidae) to different densities of 4th instar black bean aphids, Aphis fabae Scopoli (Homoptera: Aphididae), on broad bean, Vicia faba L. (Fabaceae). Two different-sized larvae of predators were tested in different densities of similar-sized prey to determine whether functional response parameters depended on the body sizes of predator and prey. In numerical response experiments, gravid E. balteatus females were exposed individually to different densities of 4th instars of A. fabae on cut sections of the broad bean plant, V. faba L. Logistic regression suggested a type II functional response for both larval sizes of E. balteatus. The searching efficiency (a) of the larger larvae was higher than that of the smaller ones. Prey consumption was higher, and handling time (Th) was lower for larger larvae than smaller ones. The theoretical maximum number of A. fabae nymphs eaten by the different-sized larvae was 125 and 269 nymphs per day. Larger E. balteatus larvae are more efficient predators for aphid management strategies. The reproductive numerical response, in terms of the number of eggs laid, increased curvilinearly with increasing prey density, but the proportion of eggs laid (egg number/prey density) decreased as the initial density of prey increased.

Halyomorpha halys (Stål, 1855) is an invasive pest causing serious damage to agricultural crops in Europe and the USA. Very little is known about H. halys predators in Europe. This survey evaluated the potential of generalist predators/omnivorous species by means of predation bioassays in tri-dimensional arenas, where the predator had to locate H. halys prey items on the leaves of a bean plant. Eleven species of different taxa were tested and the prey items consisted in fresh eggmasses, 1st and 2nd instar nymphs. One species was also tested against adults. Some predators were species commercially available as biocontrol agents against plant pests, other predators were wild, captured in habitats shared with H. halys. All tested specimens were starved 24 h before starting the experiment. The survivorship of control prey items in predator-excluding cages was compared to that of predator treatment groups to determine the effect of predator presence. According to the results, the generalist species showed a quite low acceptance of H. halys prey items, since only two species caused 80% mortality on at least one item (Eupholidoptera chabrieri and Rhynocoris iracundus) and mortality due the other species never exceed 60%. Among commercially available species only Adalia bipunctata adults and Chrysoperla carnea larvae were effective, predating the eggs and 1st instar nymphs, respectively. Among the field collected specimens, the orthopteran E. chabrieri and the predatory hemipterans R. iracundus, Nagusta goedelii and Himacerus mirmicoides showed efficacy against 1st instar nymphs, E. chabrieri and R. iracundus showed efficacy against 2nd instar nymphs, whereas only E. chabrieri and N. goedelii predated the eggs. R. iracundus was also tested on the adults and successfully predated them. By identifying some of the species that can exploit H. halys as a suitable prey in southern Europe, the present investigation provides an important contribution for conservation biological control of this pest.
