1. The zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) is well known for its invasive success and its ecological and economic impacts. Of particular concern has been the regional extinction of North American freshwater mussels (Order Unionoida) on whose exposed shells the zebra mussels settle. Surprisingly, relatively little attention has been given to the fouling of European unionoids. 2. We investigated interspecific patterns in fouling at six United Kingdom localities between 1998 and 2008. To quantify the effect on two pan‐European unionoids (Anodonta anatina and Unio pictorum), we used two measures of physiological status: tissue mass : shell mass and tissue glycogen content. 3. The proportion of fouled mussels increased between 1998 and 2008, reflecting the recent, rapid increase in zebra mussels in the U.K. Anodonta anatina was consistently more heavily fouled than U. pictorum and had a greater surface area of shell exposed in the water column. 4. Fouled mussels had a lower physiological condition than unfouled mussels. Unlike tissue mass : shell mass ratio, tissue glycogen content was independent of mussel size, making it a particularly useful measure of condition. Unio pictorum showed a stronger decline in glycogen with increasing zebra mussel load, but had a broadly higher condition than A. anatina at the time of study (July). 5. Given the high conservation status and important ecological roles of unionoids, the increased spatial distribution and fouling rates by D. polymorpha in Europe should receive more attention.  相似文献

Intraspecific trends in freshwater mussel (unionoid) shells that are consistently associated with differences in the mussels' sex and/or parasitic infestation can potentially be used to reconstruct sex ratios or parasitic levels of modern and ancient unionoid populations. In contrast to morphological patterns within mammal species, such dimorphic trends within unionoid species are, however, poorly understood. This study investigates, for the first time, to what extent sex, trematode infection and indirect habitat effects determine shell morphology in the freshwater mussel Anodonta anatina. Three of the five study populations displayed significant sexual shell width dimorphism. Here, shells of females were significantly wider than males, probably as a result of altered shell growth to accommodate marsupial gills. In two of these populations, female shells were additionally significantly thinner than those of males, which could be a result of resource depletion by offspring production. Two other A. anatina populations showed no significant dimorphic patterns, and our results indicate that this interpopulational difference in the degree of sexual dimorphism may reflect the overarching effect of habitat on morphology. Thus, populations in the most favourable habitats exhibit faster growth rates, attain larger maximum sizes and produce more offspring, which results in more swollen gills and consequently more inflated shells of gravid females compared to less fecund populations. None of the populations showed any evidence for sexual dimorphism in overall size, growth rate, sagittal shape and density of shells. In addition to sexual dimorphisms, infestation by bucephalid trematode parasites (Rhipidocotyle sp.) significantly altered sagittal and lateral shell shape of A. anatina in one of the populations, with infected specimens growing wider and more elongated. An examination of the shell microstructure and mineralogy of species from 30 of the 32 genera and subgenera of the gastropod family Littorinidae shows that most species have a shell consisting of layers of aragonitic crossed-lamellar structure, with minor variations in some taxa. However, Pellilitorina, Risellopsis and most species of Littorina have partly or entirely calcitic shells. In Pellilitorina the shell is made entirely of calcitic crossed-foliated structure, while in the other two genera there is only an outer calcitic layer of irregular-prismatic structure. A cladistic analysis shows that the calcitic layers have been independently evolved in at least three clades. The calcite is found only in the outermost layers of the shell and in species inhabiting cooler waters of both northern and southern hemispheres. Calcium carbonate is more soluble in cold than warm water and, of the two polymorphs, calcite is about 35% less soluble than aragonite. We suggest that calcitic shell layers are an adaptation of high latitude littorinids to resist shell dissolution.  相似文献

Gastropod shells are vital for the majority of hermit crab species, being essential for their survival, growth, protection, and reproduction. Given their importance, shells are acquired and transferred between crabs through several modalities. We conducted observations and experiments at the Asinara Island (Sardinia, Italy) to investigate the efficacy of the different behavioral tactics adopted by the hermit crab Clibanarius erythropus to acquire shells, such as: (1) locomotion and activity at different tidal phases; (2) attendance at shell-supplying sites (simulated predation sites with five different odors: live and dead gastropods, live and dead crabs, predator); and (3) interactions with conspecifics in aggregations on simulated gastropod predation sites. In each tidal phase, locomotion was slow (0.7 cm min− 1) and, as a consequence, the probability of encountering empty shells and conspecifics was low. Simulated gastropod predation sites quickly attracted a larger number of hermit crabs than the other sites tested. Aggregations seemed to function as shell exchange markets, as previously suggested for other species: the first attendant took the experimental shell and a chain of shell exchanges among conspecifics followed. Our results show that, in C. erythropus, aggregation is the most efficient tactic for the acquisition of new shells, whereas in other species, such as Pagurus longicarpus, it is associated with exploitation ability due to the intense locomotion. The interspecific plasticity in hermit crabs' behavior is confirmed.  相似文献

The mollusc genus Mytilus is abundant in various modern marine environments and is an important substrate for palaeo‐proxy work. The redox‐sensitive chromium (Cr) isotope system is emerging as a proxy for changes in the oxidation state of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans. However, potential isotopic offsets between ambient sea water and modern biogenic carbonates have yet to be constrained. We measured Cr concentrations ([Cr]) and isotope variations (δ53Cr) in recent mollusc shells (Mytilus) from open and restricted marine environments and compared these to ambient sea water δ53Cr values. We found a large range in mollusc [Cr] (12–309 ppb) and δ53Cr values (?0.30 to +1.25‰) and in the offset between δ53Cr values of mollusc shells and ambient sea water (, ?0.17 to ?0.91‰). Step digestions of cultivated Mytilus edulis specimens indicate that Cr is mainly concentrated in organic components of the shell (periostracum: 407 ppb, n = 2), whereas the mollusc carbonate minerals contain ≤3 ppb Cr. Analyses of individual Cr‐hosting phases (i.e., carbonate minerals and organic matrix) did not reveal significant differences in δ53Cr values, and thus, we suggest that Cr isotope fractionation may likely take place prior to rather than during biomineralisation of Mytilus shells. Heterogeneity of δ53Cr values in mollusc shells depends on sea water chemistry (e.g., salinity, food availability, faeces). The main control for δ53Cr values incorporated into shells, however, is likely vital effects (in particular shell valve closure time) since Cr can be partially or quantitatively reduced in sea water trapped between closed shell valves. The δ53Cr values recorded in Mytilus shells may thus be de‐coupled from the redox conditions of ambient sea water, introducing additional heterogeneity that needs to be better constrained before using δ53Cr values in mollusc shells for palaeo‐reconstructions.  相似文献

The oyster Ostrea chilensis develops in estuaries and incubates its embryos inside the pallial cavity. Reduced external salinity triggers valve closure and isolation of the brood chamber, which in turn alters conditions in the pallial fluid, including pH reductions ranging from 7.65 (SD = 0.05) to 6.97 (SD = 0.02) in non-brooding females and 6.96 (SD = 0.10) in brooding females after 12 h of isolation. Exposing veliger larvae to acidic pH's (5 and 3) decreased the thickness of the embryonic shell valves. Calcium, sodium, chlorine, tin, sulphur, and magnesium were the most important (> 99%) elements constituting the veliger shells. Calcium content in the pallial cavity fluid increased with continued isolation in both brooding and non-brooding females, but calcium remained as the primary component (about 94%) of embryonic shells and maintained its normal proportion with respect to the rest of the elements at all tested pH's. The increased calcium in the pallial fluid was identified mainly as coming from the shells of brooding females. If any neutralizing elements were coming from embryonic shell valves, all elements in those shells must have been solubilising to the same degree. Veligers ceased all further shell growth while isolated within the female's brood chamber. However, veliger shell growth resumed once females were returned to high-salinity seawater. Our study shows that female isolation of the mantle cavity, often considered an adaptive response to the periodically reduced salinities of estuarine waters, can in fact generate adverse effects on brooded embryos.  相似文献

Fossil skeletal apatites vary in their composition and can yield mixed biochemical, environmental and diagenetic information. Thus, it is important to evaluate the diagenesis spatially inside the skeleton. We study the cross sections of shells of the Furongian lingulate brachiopod Ungula ingrica from Estonia using the Attenuated Total Reflectance – Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR‐FTIR) microspectroscopic and energy dispersive spectroscopic (EDS) mapping and show for the first time that different structural laminae of the shell have different chemical compositions. Compact laminae are rich in PO43?, Na, Mg and poor in F and Ca. Porous (baculate) laminae are rich in carbonate anions, Ca and F, but contain less Na and Mg. The ATR‐FTIR spectra show further differences in the ν2 carbonate region, where the IR band at 872 cm?1 in compact laminae is replaced by a strong band at 864 cm?1 in baculate laminae. The changes in shell apatite suggest different origins of the apatite phases. Compact laminae are likely chemically less altered and could potentially carry more reliable palaeoenvironmental or geochemical information than the apatite in baculate laminae, which is mostly authigenic in its origin.  相似文献

Pomacea (Ampullariidae) snails, commonly referred to as apple snails, serve as prey for many freshwater-dependent predators, and some species are highly invasive. Identifying limits to apple snail distribution and abundance are pertinent to understanding their ecology. Calcium (Ca2+) availability and pH generally influences freshwater snail populations, yet scant data exist for Pomacea snails. We measured 6-week change in shell length (ΔSL) in P. paludosa in two laboratory experiments with varying Ca2+ and pH levels. ΔSL was significantly higher in ≥28 mg Ca2+/l compared with treatments ≤14 mg/l. Snails from populations living in low Ca2+/pH waters did not appear genetically predisposed at growing faster in these conditions. Smallest ΔSL was in snails treated with 3.6 mg Ca2+/l and pH < 6.5 water; these snails had signs of shell erosion. Shell crush weights (CWs) were lowest for snails grown in the lowest Ca2+/pH treatment. Smaller shells and lower CWs have implications for predation vulnerability and reproductive success. Our results are consistent with reports associating relatively low snail densities with relatively low Ca2+/pH waters, and they are consistent with the geographic distribution of P. paludosa as related to the underlying water chemistry as influenced by geology.  相似文献

This research describes compositional variations within the shell of the extant mussel Mytilur edulis and proposes that they are produced by metabolic gradients within the shell-secreting mantle. Because we have previously proposed that the same metabolic gradients are responsible for variations in shell form (curvature), we establish here a model for molluscan shell growth integrating. for the first time. shell form and composition with mantle metabolism. The electron microprobe was used to measure the distribution of Mg. S, and Ca in the outer calcitic shell layer of sectioned. polished, and either A1- or C-coated shell. Mg/Ca and S/Ca ratios in the outer shell are respectively 1.25 and 1.40 times higher along slow-growing, commissure-umbo axes of high shell curvature and high metabolic activity than along rapidly growing axes of low curvature and low metabolic activity. The ratios within the inner surface of the calcitic shell layer decline most rapidly along commissure-umbo axes where mantle metabolic activity also declines rapidly. We reject the null hypothesis, generally at high levels of significance (1-tests. F-tests. regression analyses, and discriminant analysis. with p 4 0.01) that there is no difference in either Mg or S concentration in sections of the calcitic shell layer that differ in shell curvature and mantle metabolic activity. We conclude that calcium (mineral)-rich portions of shells are energctically less costly to produce than matrix or minor element-rich portions. in agreement with the proposal that natural selection favors mineral-rich shells because they are more efficient to produce than matrix-rich shells. Among-specimen differences are also highly significant (mixed model ANOVA). This confirms our assertion that paleontologists need to describe variations in skeletal composition among populations and throughout ontogeny as systematically as classical taxonomists describe morphology. if ever the environmental and the genetic influences on skeletal composition are to be distinguished. Cage enrichment devices (ED), frequently termed cage “toys,” are often provided to captive parrots as a means of promoting a behaviorally stimulating environment, but it is not clear whether particular properties of EDs are more effective than others in eliciting engagement with them. We tested preference for color, size and hardness of cube-shaped EDs constructed from wood and of color preference for EDs constructed from flat rawhide rectangles. Orange-winged Amazon parrots (Amazona amazonica; N = 8–10, mixed-sex, 4–5 years of age) were individually housed in cages each equipped with two computer-monitored omni-directional lever-type switches attached to cage ceilings. EDs were attached to the switches; any interactions generating lateral movement and causing switch closure (operationally constituting “use” of EDs) were continuously recorded. Preference for 3.8 cm3 softwood (Douglas fir) cubes dyed in eight different colors was tested by presenting each bird with all combinations of colors, two colors at a time. Daily switch activity averages were computed for each bird and subjected to repeated-measures ANOVA: yellow cubes elicited greater use than red, green, blue, violet or natural cubes (P < 0.05; but see below) and orange cubes were preferred over green and blue cubes (P < 0.05). Color exerted no effect in a comparable trial of rawhide rectangles. Preference for size of yellow hardwood cubes was tested by presenting combinations of cubes of three sizes: 2.5, 3.8, and 5.1 cm3; the smallest blocks were preferred over the largest size (P < 0.001). Preference for hardness of wood was tested by presenting birds with 3.8 cm3 yellow cubes and blue cubes made of either Douglas fir (“soft”) or birch/maple (“hard”) wood; birds preferred softer cubes (P < 0.0002), but there was no significant preference of yellow over blue. The results show that color, hardness, size and material all influence ED use by captive Amazon parrots. This constellation of preferences may reflect properties of foods native to Orange-winged Amazon natural habitat.  相似文献

Several species of planktonic foraminifera precipitate a final layer of calcite onto the shell surface immediately prior to gamete release at the end of the foraminifera life cycle. Here, we present the results of carbon-13, oxygen-18 and thermal labeling experiments conducted under high (HL) and low light (LL) regimes that vary symbiont photosynthetic activity. Mean experimental group data show that gametogenic (gam) calcite contributes between 4–17% and 14–20% to final shell mass for high and low light experiments respectively. These data indicate that past studies of gam calcite addition have overestimated the amount of gam calcite on foraminifera shells by ~ 30–55%. Calculations indicate that the mass of gam calcite added to the O. universa shell, 4.2 ± 2.0 μg and 4.0 ± 2.4 μg, is constant in the HL and LL groups respectively. We propose that the production of gam calcite may be the result of the discharge of a relatively constant-volume cytoplasmic pool of either Ca2+ or alkalinity (carbon pool) that increases the calcite saturation state in the microenvironment adjacent to the foraminifera shell just prior to gamete formation and release. Results from these experiments indicate that the geochemistry of thin-walled O. universa from deep sea sediments is composed of > 80% ontogenetic calcite that was precipitated in the primary, near surface habitat of this species.  相似文献

The enzymatic acylation of (RS)-phenylethylamine with different acyl donors catalysed by lipases, was studied in organic solvents with different hydrophobicities and in mixtures with ionic liquids ((ILs); [BMIm][BF4], [BMIm][SCN], [BMIm][Cl] and [BMIm][PF6]). Using lipases from Candida antarctica B (CAL-B) and from Aspergillus niger higher conversion degrees and E-values were obtained with ethyl acetate as the acyl donor. When CAL-B was used as the biocatalyst, in a two-phase system formed by [BMIm][X]/dichloromethane or [BMIm][X]/chloroform, the selectivity was better than that obtained in pure organic solvents. The selectivity was found to be related to individual anions in ILs. In this reaction, the ion effectiveness in enhancing the enzyme selectivity followed the series: Cl > SCN > BF4 > PF6 in mixtures with dichloromethane, and PF6 > BF4 > SCN > Cl in mixtures with chloroform.  相似文献

This study compared the mass-specific routine metabolic rate (RMR) of similar sized mulloway (Argyrosomus japonicus), a sedentary species, and yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi), a highly active species, acclimated at one of several temperatures ranging from 10–35 °C. Respirometry was carried out in an open-top static system and RMR corrected for seawater–atmosphere O2 exchange using mass-balance equations. For both species RMR increased linearly with increasing temperature (T). RMR for mulloway was 5.78T − 29.0 mg O2 kg− 0.8 h− 1 and for yellowtail kingfish was 12.11T − 39.40 mg O2 kg− 0.8 h− 1. The factorial difference in RMR between mulloway and yellowtail kingfish ranged from 2.8 to 2.2 depending on temperature. The energetic cost of routine activity can be described as a function of temperature for mulloway as 1.93T − 9.68 kJ kg− 0.8 day− 1 and for yellowtail kingfish as 4.04T − 13.14 kJ kg− 0.8 day− 1. Over the full range of temperatures tested Q10 values were approximately 2 for both species while Q10 responses at each temperature increment varied considerably with mulloway and yellowtail kingfish displaying thermosensitivities indicative of each species respective niche habitat. RMR for mulloway was least thermally dependent at 28.5 °C and for yellowtail kingfish at 22.8 °C. Activation energies (Ea) calculated from Arrhenius plots were not significantly different between mulloway (47.6 kJ mol− 1) and yellowtail kingfish (44.1 kJ mol− 1).  相似文献

A morphometric study on the polycystine radiolarian species Actinomma boreale (Cleve) from ten trigger weight core-tops from the Norwegian-Iceland Seas, three piston cores taken offshore western Norway and three surface sediment samples from Lygrepollen, Sogndalsfjord and Høyangsfjord (western Norwegian fjords) shows a variation in morphology that groups A. boreale into three distinct clusters, interpreted to be related to different oceanographic settings. The largest specimens of A. boreale are found in the western Norwegian fjords, the smallest in the Iceland Sea, giving an apparent positive correlation with temperature.Down core studies in piston cores from the Norwegian Sea demonstrate a considerable size variation of the cortical shell of A. boreale. In the eastern Norwegian Sea, the climatically cold Younger Dryas had a population of A. boreale that was characterized by large cortical shells, while the climatically warm Holocene population was dominated by small sized cortical shells, showing a negative correlation with temperature. We suggest that the large sized conical shell population of A. boreale in the Younger Dryas is not reflecting precisely the sea-surface water temperature. Another factor must play the dominant role here, probably nutrients.  相似文献

The dicarboxylic acids malate and fumarate increase ruminal pH, reduce methane production, increase propionate and total volatile fatty acid (VFA) production, and reduce lactic acid accumulation in a manner similar to ionophores. These acids stimulate the ruminal bacterium Selenomonas ruminantium to ferment lactate to produce propionate. Thus, dicarboxylic acids have been suggested as nonantibiotic modifiers of the ruminal fermentation, but their impact on ruminal microbial ecology remains unknown. This study was designed to examine what effects these modifiers may have on intestinal pathogen populations such as Escherichia coli O157:H7 and S. enterica Typhimurium prior to their widespread incorporation into cattle rations. Pure cultures of E. coli O157:H7 strain 933 and S. enterica Typhimurium were grown with malate and fumarate added at 0, 1, 5, 10, and 20 mM (v/v; n = 3). Neither dicarboxylic acid inhibited (p > 0.1) the growth rate or final populations of E. coli O157:H7 or S. enterica Typhimurium. Ruminal fluid was collected from cattle (n = 2) and E. coli O157:H7 and S. enterica Typhimurium were added to separate ruminal fermentations incubated for 24 h at 39°C. Fumarate and malate were added at concentrations of 0, 5, 10, and 20 mM (v/v; n = 2) and incubated for 24 h at 39°C. Malate or fumarate addition did not affect (p > 0.1) populations of E. coli O157:H7 or S. enterica Typhimurium. However, the final pH was increased (p < 0.05), the acetate:propionate ratio was decreased (p < 0.05), and the total VFA production was increased (p < 0.05) by ≥10 mM dicarboxylic acid addition. These results confirm that dicarboxylic acids can modify ruminal fermentation, but they do not affect populations of critical foodborne pathogens. Proprietary or brand names are necessary to report factually on available data; however, the USDA neither guarantees nor warrants the standard of the product, and the use of the name by the USDA implies no approval of the product, and exclusion of others that may be suitable.  相似文献

The recognition of an apparent association between seasonal oyster spat mortalities (up to 40%) and high Prorocentrum rhathymum density in the Little Swanport Estuary, Tasmania, prompted further experimental investigation into the toxicity by this dinoflagellate. Standard brine shrimp, haemolysis assays and intraperitoneal mouse bioassays revealed fast acting toxins in methanol but not aqueous extracts of P. rhathymum, with mice dying in less than 20 min. Oyster bioassays involved feeding spat (4 mm shell width) for 21 consecutive days on a diet of cultured P. rhathymum at simulated bloom densities (104 cells ml−1). No oyster mortality was observed, however, histopathological signs of thin, dilated gut tubules and sloughing of gut cells resembled those seen in affected field samples. In contrast to field samples, gill pathology was also observed in experimental exposure oysters.  相似文献

A genetically-engineered Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strain, 3A-HBF, with a broad insecticidal spectrum was constructed by introducing the recombinant plasmid pSTK-3A containing cry3Aa7 into the wild-type Bt strain HBF-1 containing the cry8Ca2 gene. The Cry3Aa7 protein produced by strain 3A-HBF was verified by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. Flat rectangular crystals of Cry3Aa7 protein were observed besides spherical crystals (Cry8Ca2). The plasmid pSTK-3A was stable when strain 3A-HBF was grown in medium without antibiotics. The growth rate of 3A-HBF was not significantly different from that of the recipient strain, HBF-1. Strain 3A-HBF showed toxicity against two families of pests, Scarabaeidae and Chrysomelidae pests, which are susceptible to Cry8Ca (Anomala corpulenta) and Cry3Aa (Leptinotarsa decemlineata and Colaphellus bowringi). The 50% lethal concentrations of 3A-HBF against A. corpulenta, L. decemlineata and C. bowringi were 0.730 × 108 c.f.u./g dry soil, 1.74 μg/ml and 1.15 μg/ml, respectively.  相似文献

This study reports the status of the Booroola (FecB) and Galway (FecXG) mutations in Indian sheep breeds. The Kendrapada sheep (n = 46) was genotyped for the presence of FecB and FecXG mutations, while the Garole (n = 34), Malpura (n = 30), and Decanni sheep (n = 15) for the FecXG mutation. The FecB and FecXG genotyping was carried out by forced restriction fragment length polymorphism PCR technique. In the present study, FecB mutation was discovered in the Kendrapada sheep of Orissa, which is now the second prolific sheep of India after the Garole. Out of 46 individuals of Kendrapada sheep, 26 were homozygous (BB), 15 heterozygous (B+) and 5 non-carriers (++) for the FecB mutation. The frequency of the FecB allele in this sample was about 0.73. Results indicated that the frequency of the FecB mutation is high, but the gene is not fixed in the population as reported in Garole sheep. None of sheep breeds carried the FecXG mutation. The discovery of the FecB mutation in Kendrapada sheep will facilitate the use of FecB allele in improving the prolificacy of non-prolific sheep breeds of India.  相似文献
