Hydroperiod and nutrient status are known to influence aquatic communities in wetlands, but their joint effects are not well explored. I sampled floating periphyton mat and flocculent detritus (floc) infaunal communities using 6-cm diameter cores at short- and long-hydroperiod and constantly inundated sites across a range of phosphorus (P) availability (total phosphorus in soil, floc and periphyton). Differences in community structure between periphyton and floc microhabitats were greater than any variation attributable to hydroperiod, P availability, or other spatial factors. Multivariate analyses indicated community structure of benthic-floc infauna was driven by hydroperiod, although crowding (no. g−1 AFDM) of individual taxa showed no consistent responses to hydroperiod or P availability. In contrast, community structure of periphyton mat infauna was driven by P availability, while densities of mat infauna (no. m−2) were most influenced by hydroperiod (+correlations). Crowding of mat infauna increased significantly with P availability in short-hydroperiod marshes, but was constant across the P gradient in long-hydroperiod marshes. Increased abundance of floating-periphyton mat infauna with P availability at short-hydroperiod sites may result from a release from predation by small fish. Community structure and density were not different between long-hydroperiod and constantly inundated sites. These results have implications for the use of macroinvertebrates as indicators of water quality in wetlands and suggest the substrate sampled can influence interpretation of ecological responses observed in these communities.  相似文献

Responses of periphyton communities to different relevant durations of dry down were assessed. Long-hydroperiod sites within Everglades National Park remain wet for greater than 8 months of the year while short-hydroperiod mats are wet for fewer than 4 months of the year. Dry down duration of long and short-hydroperiod Everglades periphyton was manipulated from 0 to 1, 3, or 8 months after which periphyton was rewetted 1 month and examined for algal species composition. The effects of desiccation and rewetting on periphyton nutrient retention were also assessed. Relative abundance of diatoms declined from an average of 47% in the long-hydroperiod community at the start of the experiment to 24% after 1 month of desiccation and only 12% after 8 months of desiccation. Short-hydroperiod periphyton contained a lower proportion of diatoms at the outset (3%), which declined to less than 1% after the 8-month desiccation treatment. A significant increase in the filamentous cyanobacteria Schizothrix calcicola occurred in long-hydroperiod periphyton mats during this same period, but not in short-hydroperiod mats. Long-hydroperiod periphyton communities had a greater response to desiccation overall, but short-hydroperiod community structure responded to desiccation more rapidly. Because short-hydroperiod communities dry frequently, they appear to cope better to desiccating conditions than long-hydroperiod periphyton communities. This is indicated by the dominance of desiccation resistant algal taxa such as the cyanobacterial filaments S. calcicola and Scytonema hofmanni. Long-hydroperiod periphyton mat communities converge compositionally to short-hydroperiod periphyton communities after prolonged desiccation. Desiccation and rewetting caused long-hydroperiod periphyton to flux greater concentrations of nutrients than short-hydroperiod periphyton. Significant increases in efflux occurred from 1 to 8 months for total phosphorus (TP) and from 1 to 3 and 8 months for total nitrogen (TN) and total organic carbon (TOC). Thus, changes in periphyton mat community structure and function with altered hydroperiod may have long-term ecosystem effects.  相似文献

Phosphorus (P) dynamics in large shallow lakes are greatly influenced by physical processes such as wind-driven sediment resuspension, at times scales from hours to years. Results from long-term (30 year) research on Lake Okeechobee, Florida (area 1,730 km2, mean depth 2.7 m) illustrate key features of these P dynamics. Variations in wind velocity result in changes in water column transparency, suspended solids, and total P (TP). In summer there are diurnal changes in TP associated with afternoon winds, and in winter, when strong winds occur for multiple days, monthly average TP remains high compared to summer. The magnitude of daily and seasonal TP changes can exceed 100 μg l−1. Hurricanes and tropical storms also cause extreme changes in TP that are superimposed on seasonal dynamics. When a hurricane passed 80 km south of the lake in October 1999, mean pelagic TP increased from 88 to 222 μg l−1. During large resuspension events, light attenuation is substantially increased, and this influences the biomass and spatial extent of submerged plants, as well as water column TP. In Lake Okeechobee, TP concentrations typically are ∼20 μg l−1 when submerged plants are dense, and soluble reactive P concentrations are reduced below detection, perhaps by the periphyton and plant uptake and by precipitation with calcium at high pH. In contrast, TP exceeds 50 μg l−1 when submerged plants and periphyton are absent due to prolonged deep water, and phytoplankton biomass and algal bloom frequency both are increased. In Lake Okeechobee and other large shallow lakes, complex models that explicitly consider wind-wave energy, hydrodynamics, and sediment resuspension, transport, and key biological processes are needed to accurately predict how lake water TP will respond to different management options.  相似文献

Everglades periphyton mats are tightly-coupled autotrophic (algae and cyanobacteria) and heterotrophic (eubacteria, fungi and microinvertebrates) microbial assemblages. We investigated the effect of water column total phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations, water depth and hydroperiod on periphyton of net production, respiration, nutrient content, and biomass. Our study sites were located along four transects that extended southward with freshwater sheetflow through sawgrass-dominated marsh. The water source for two of the transects were canal-driven and anchored at canal inputs. The two other transects were rain-driven (ombrotrophic) and began in sawgrass-dominated marsh. Periphyton dynamics were examined for upstream and downstream effects within and across the four transects. Although all study sites were characterized as short hydroperiod and phosphorus-limited oligotrophic, they represent gradients of hydrologic regime, water source and water quality of the southern Everglades. Average periphyton net production of 1.08 mg C AFDW−1 h−1 and periphyton whole system respiration of 0.38 mg C AFDW−1 h−1 rates were net autotrophic. Biomass was generally highest at ombrotrophic sites and sites downstream of canal inputs. Mean biomass over all our study sites was high, 1517.30 g AFDW m−2. Periphyton was phosphorus-limited. Average periphyton total phosphorus content was 137.15 μg P g−1 and average periphyton total N:P ratio was 192:1. Periphyton N:P was a sensitive indicator of water source. Even at extremely low mean water total phosphorus concentrations ( ≤ 0.21 μmol l−1), we found canal source effects on periphyton dynamics at sites adjacent to canal inputs, but not downstream of inflows. These canal source effects were most pronounced at the onset of wet season with initial rewetting. Spatial and temporal variability in periphyton dynamics could not solely be ascribed to water quality, but was often associated with both hydrology and water source.  相似文献

The effects of shade on benthic calcareous periphyton were tested in a short-hydroperiod oligotrophic subtropical wetland (freshwater Everglades). The experiment was a split-plot design set in three sites with similar environmental characteristics. At each site, eight randomly selected 1-m2 areas were isolated individually in a shade house, which did not spectrally change the incident irradiance but reduced it quantitatively by 0, 30, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 98%. Periphyton mat was sampled monthly under each shade house for a 5 month period while the wetland was flooded. Periphyton was analyzed for thickness, DW, AFDW, chlorophyll a (chl a) and incubated in light and dark BOD bottles at five different irradiances to assess its photosynthesis–irradiance (PI) curve and respiration. The PI curves parameters P max, I k and eventually the photoinhibition slope (β) were determined following non-linear regression analyses. Taxonomic composition and total algal biovolume were determined at the end of the experiment. The periphyton composition did not change with shade but the PI curves were significantly affected by it. I k increased linearly with increasing percent irradiance transmittance (%IT = 1−%shade). P max could be fitted with a PI curve equation as it increased with %IT and leveled off after 10%IT. For each shade level, the PI curve was used to integrate daily photosynthesis for a day of average irradiance. The daily photosynthesis followed a PI curve equation with the same characteristics as P max vs. %IT. Thus, periphyton exhibited a high irradiance plasticity under 0–80% shade but could not keep up the same photosynthetic level at higher shade, causing a decrease in daily GPP at 98% shade levels. The plasticity was linked to an increase in the chl a content per cell in the 60–80% shade, while this increase was not observed at lower shade likely because it was too demanding energetically. Thus, chl a is not a good metric for periphyton biomass assessment across variously shaded habitats. It is also hypothesized that irradiance plasticity is linked to photosynthetic coupling between differently comprised algal layers arranged vertically within periphyton mats that have different PI curves.  相似文献

Abundance, depth distribution, potential productivity and respiration of periphyton on short-time (1 month) and long-time incubated strips were followed monthly during the winter–spring (January–May) transition in a shallow eutrophic lake. A taxonomic shift occurred from dominance of diatoms under ice to chlorophyte dominance in spring communities on the long-time incubated strips, while diatoms dominated until May on the short-time incubated strips. Periphyton biomass accrual was low during the ice-covered winter months (November–January: 4 mg chl a m−2 month−1), but increased to a maximum of 112 mg chl a m−2 month−1 immediately after ice-out in February. During February–April, the biomass remained constant before declining in May. Periphyton on long-time incubated strips was equally distributed in the water column in winter (January–February), but was higher near the water surface in spring (March–May). Periphyton did not change with depth on the short-time incubated strips. The potential production to respiration ratio (P/R) was negatively correlated with periphyton biomass. Throughout the study, P/R was <1 for the short-time incubated periphyton, while this was only the case in March–April for the long-time incubations. This study showed a high productive capacity of winter periphyton, resulting in accumulation of a relatively high periphytic biomass early in the season. A massive periphyton density in eutrophic lakes already in winter–spring may potentially delay or prevent the establishment and re-occurrence of submerged macrophytes in the early oligotrophication phase following a reduction of the external nutrient loading. The abundance, community structure and nutrient content of periphyton, and the host plant taxa Chara, Hydrilla, Potamogeton, Vallisneria and Scirpus were studied in Lake Okeechobee, USA. Water levels were generally high during the study period (August 2002–January 2006), but substantial fluctuations occurred. All host plant biomass was seasonally variable but only Vallisneria biomass was spatially variable. All submerged plant beds disappeared after the passage of two hurricanes in September 2004, and a third hurricane passed over the lake in October 2005. Periphyton assemblages were statistically separated most by substrate and then by season. Prior to the hurricanes, annual maxima of periphyton biovolumes and those of summer submerged plant coverage coincided. During all study years, the diatom taxa dominated periphyton total biovolumes. Periphyton biomass was generally highest during the summer or prior to the hurricanes (in the case of epiphytes) and was spatially variable in the case of both Scirpus and Vallisneria. Epiphytic nutrient contents within each host plant group seasonally varied except for nitrogen and carbon in the Vallisneria epiphytes. Epipelic nutrient contents were spatially variable and seasonally variable for carbon. Nutrient contents in epipelon were significantly higher than that in Scirpus epiphytes and were similar but lower among all epiphytic communities. The total annual areal potential epiphytic phosphorus storage extrapolated during this study (2.0 × 10−4 metric tons ha−1 year−1) was underestimated because storage estimates for epipelon, Chara and Hydrilla-associated epiphytes were omitted. The Chara and Hydrilla-associated epiphytic nutrient storage values were omitted because of limited data, whereas the epipelic data may have not been spatially representative. For periphyton biovolume, host substrate type, water level fluctuation and hurricane impacts on host substrates appear to be more important than seasonal variation in such factors as temperature and nutrients. Epiphytic nutrient storage appears to be influenced most by water level fluctuation and hurricane-related impacts, while the host substrate type appears to be a less important factor than it is for periphyton biovolume. Maximum periphyton biomass and high nutrient storage in shallow subtropical and tropical eutrophic lakes may only occur at consistently lower water levels and during infrequent periods of disturbance, which enhance host substrate colonizable area.  相似文献

This study examined the effects land use on biomass and ecological stoichiometry of periphyton in 36 streams in southeastern New York State (USA). We quantified in-stream and land-use variables along a N–S land-use gradient at varying distances from New York City (NYC). Streams draining different landscapes had fundamentally different physical, chemical, and biological properties. Human population density significantly decreased (r = −0.739; P < 0.00001), while % agricultural land significantly increased (r = 0.347; P = 0.0379) with northing. Turbidity, temperature, conductivity, and dissolved Mg, Ca, SRP, pH, DOC, and Si significantly increased in more urban locations, but NO3 and NH4 + did vary not significantly along the gradient. Periphyton biomass (as AFDM and Chl-a) in rural streams averaged one-third to one-fifth that measured in urban locations. Periphyton biomass in urban streams averaged 18.8 ± 6.0 g/m2 AFDM and 75.6 ± 28.5 mg/m2 Chl-a. Urban Chl-a levels ranging between 100 and 200 mg/m2, are comparable to quantities measured in polluted agricultural streams in other regions, but in our study area was not correlated with % agricultural land. Periphyton nutrient content also varied widely; algal C varied >20-fold (0.06–1.7 μmol/mm2) while N and P content varied >6-fold among sites. Algal C, N, and P correlated negatively with distance from NYC, suggesting that periphyton in urban streams may provide greater nutrition for benthic consumers. C:N ratios averaged 7.6 among streams, with 91% very close to 7.5, a value suggested as the optimum for algal growth. In contrast, periphyton C:P ratios ranged from 122 to >700 (mean = 248, twice Redfield). Algal-P concentrations were significantly greater in urban streams, but data suggest algal growth was P-limited in most streams regardless of degree of urbanization. GIS models indicate that land-use effects did not easily fit into strict categories, but varied continuously from rural to urban conditions. We propose that the gradient approach is the most effective method to characterize the influence of land use and urbanization on periphyton and stream function.  相似文献

Responses of stream algal biomass to nutrient enrichment were studied in two regions where differences in hydrologic variability cause great differences in herbivory. Around northwestern Kentucky (KY) hydrologic variability constrains invertebrate biomass and their effects on algae, but hydrologic stability in Michigan (MI) streams permits accrual of high herbivore densities and herbivory of benthic algae. Multiple indicators of algal biomass and nutrient availability were measured in 104 streams with repeated sampling at each site over a 2−month period. Many measures of algal biomass and nutrient availability were positively correlated in both regions, however the amount of variation explained varied with measures of biomass and nutrient concentration and with region. Indicators of diatom biomass were higher in KY than MI, but were not related to nutrient concentrations in either region. Chl a and % area of substratum covered by Cladophora were positively correlated to nutrient concentrations in both regions. Cladophora responded significantly more to nutrients in MI than KY. Total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) explained similar amounts of variation in algal biomass, and not significantly more variation in biomass than dissolved nutrient concentrations. Low N:P ratios in the benthic algae indicated N as well as P may be limiting their accrual. Most observed responses in benthic algal biomass occurred in nutrient concentrations between 10 and 30 μg TP l−1 and between 400 and 1000 μg TN l−1.  相似文献

Three treatments of zinc (0.05, 0.5, 1.0 mg Zn l−1) and a control could be identified by different algal communities in outdoor, flow-through, stream mesocosms. Established communities were continuously exposed to Zn, and samples were collected on days 0, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 30 after treatment began. Experiments were conducted in spring, summer, and fall 1984. Control stream mesocosms could be identified by diatoms in all seasons. The 0.05 mg Zn l−1 treatment could be identified by certain diatom taxa being more abundant than in the control in all seasons and by a filamentous green alga in summer and fall. The 0.5 mg Zn l−1 treatment could be identified by a filamentous green alga in fall. The 1.0 mg Zn l−1 treatment was dominated by unicellular green algae in all seasons and by a filamentous blue-green alga in summer. A similarity index (SIMI) indicated that Zn-stressed samples generally became less similar to control samples as Zn concentration increased from 0.05 to 1.0 mg Zn l−1. Total biovolume-density of all taxa responded slower than individual taxa in spring and failed to distinguish between Zn treatments in summer and fall. Zinc bound to periphyton was much better than total Zn in water for identifying Zn treatments. Zinc treatments as low as 0.05 mg Zn l−1 changed algal species composition despite 0.047 mg Zn l−1 being the Criterion of the US Environmental Protection Agency for the 24-h average of total recoverable Zn.  相似文献

Water and surficial sediment samples of Lake Chascomús and its tributaries were analyzed in order to relate changes in diatom community structure to chemical variables. Over the course of 13 months of sampling, the lake exhibited major changes in water level (1.15–1.98 m average depth), total dissolved solids (821–1972 mg l−1), silica (0.098–8.22 mg l−1), and total algal biomass (21.4–145.9 μg Chl a l−1). However, despite these large fluctuations, the diatom species composition was relatively stable. The dominant species in the water column was always Synedra berolinensis (68.9%–90.1% total frustules), with Fragilaria construens and F. brevistriata as subdominants. In the sediments the latter two species dominated the frustule counts. These results indicate an unusual floristic stability of this eutrophic ecosystem, with persistent dominance by broadly tolerant, generalist species. In this study we manipulated both nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in stream mesocosms to develop quantitative relationships between periphytic algal growth rates and peak biomass with inorganic N and P concentrations. Stream water from Harts Run, a 2nd order stream in a pristine catchment, was constantly added to 36 stream-side stream mesocosms in low volumes and then recirculated to reduce nutrient concentrations. Clay tiles were colonized with periphyton in the mesocosms. Nutrients were added to create P and N concentrations ranging from less than Harts Run concentrations to 128 μg SRP l−1 and 1024 μg NO3-N l−1. Algae and water were sampled every 3 days during colonization until periphyton communities reached peak biomass and then sloughed. Nutrient depletion was substantial in the mesocosms. Algae accumulated in all streams, even streams in which no nutrients were added. Nutrient limitation of algal growth and peak biomass accrual was observed in both low P and low N conditions. The Monod model best explained relationships between P and N concentrations and algal growth and peak biomass. Algal growth was 90% of maximum rates or higher in nutrient concentrations 16 μg SRP l−1 and 86 μg DIN l−1. These saturating concentrations for growth rates were 3–5 times lower than concentrations needed to produce maximum biomass. Modified Monod models using both DIN and SRP were developed to explain algal growth rates and peak biomass, which respectively explained 44 and 70% of the variance in algal response.  相似文献

This study provides some results about microbial activity in salt marsh sediments. Microbial activity was determined by profiling extracellular enzyme activities in three Tagus estuary marshes and in two sediments horizons: surface layer (0–2 cm) and depth (8–10 cm). Five enzymatic activities were examined (β-glucosidase, cellulase, alkaline phosphatase, potential nitrification and nitrate reductase). All extracellular enzymatic activities were highest in the surface layer and decreased with depth. β-glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase prevailed both in surface sediments (1150 and 1200 ηmol h−1 g−1, respectively) and in deeper sediments (150 and 200 ηmol h−1 g−1, respectively). Microbial activities differed significantly between salt marshes. The marsh location in the estuary seemed to contribute to these differences: marshes located in the proximity of urbanised and industrial areas had higher microbial activities.  相似文献

Landfast ice algal communities were studied in the strongly riverine-influenced northernmost part of the Baltic Sea, the Bothnian Bay, during the winter-spring transition of 2004. The under-ice river plume, detected by its low salinity and elevated nutrient concentrations, was observed only at the station closest to the river mouth. The bottommost ice layer at this station was formed from the plume water (brine volume 0.71%). This was reflected by the low flagellate-dominated (93%) algal biomass in the bottom layer, which was one-fifth of the diatom-dominated (74%) surface-layer biomass of 88 μg C l−1. Our results indicate that habitable space plays a controlling role for ice algae in the Bothnian Bay fast ice. Similarly to the water column in the Bothnian Bay, average dissolved inorganic N:P-ratios in the ice were high, varying between 12 and 265. The integrated chlorophyll a (0.1–2.2 mg m−2) and algal biomass in the ice (1–31 mg C m−2) correlated significantly (Spearman ρ = 0.79), with the highest values being measured close to the river mouth in March and during the melt season in April. Flagellates <20 μm generally dominated in both the ice and water columns in February–March. In April the main ice-algal biomass was composed of Melosira arctica and unidentified pennate diatoms, while in the water column Achnanthes taeniata, Scrippsiella hangoei and flagellates dominated. The photosynthetic efficiency (0.003–0.013 (μg C [μg chl a −1] h−1)(μE m−2s−1)−1) and maximum capacity (0.18–1.11 μg C [μg chl a −1] h−1) could not always be linked to the algal composition, but in the case of a clear diatom dominance, pennate species showed to be more dark-adapted than centric diatoms.  相似文献

Periphyton constitutes an important community that is useful for assessment of ecological conditions in lotic systems. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of different mixtures of Cd and Pb on periphyton growth as well as Cd and Pb mixtures toxicity to diatom assemblages in laboratory mesocosm experiments. A natural periphyton community sampled from the Monjolinho River (South of Brazil) was inoculated into five experimental systems containing clean glass substrates for periphyton colonization. The communities were exposed to mixtures of dissolved Cd and Pb concentrations of 0.01 and 0.1 mg l−1 Cd and 0.033 and 0.1 mg l−1 Pb. Periphyton ash-free dry weight, growth rate, diatom cell density and diatom community composition were analyzed on samples collected after 1, 2 and 3 weeks of colonization. High Cd concentration (0.1 mg l−1) has negative effects on periphyton growth while high concentration of Pb (0.1 mg l−1) decreased the toxic effects of Cd on periphyton growth. Shifts in species composition (development of more resistant species like Achnanthidium minutissimum and reduction of sensitive ones like Cymbopleura naviculiformis, Fragilaria capucina, Navicula cryptocephala, Encyonema silesiacum, Eunotia bilunaris, and Gomphonema parvulum), decreases in species diversity of diatom communities with increasing Cd and Pb concentrations and exposure duration have been demonstrated in this study making diatom communities appropriate monitors of metal mixtures in aquatic systems.  相似文献

We studied the trophic development of the past 30–100 years in eight moderately deep Dutch lakes based on their sedimentary fossil diatom assemblages. The dominant diatoms indicating meso- to eutrophic conditions were Aulacoseira subarctica, Cyclotella ocellata, C. cyclopuncta, C. meneghiniana, Puncticulata bodanica, Aulacoseira granulata, Cyclostephanos dubius, C. invisitatus, Stephanodiscus hantzschii, S. medius, and S. parvus. Ordination of diatom data separated the lakes into four groups according to their total phosphorus concentrations (TP), water supply, water management, and origin. The first group consists of dike-breach lakes, which were in stable eutrophic to hypertrophic conditions throughout the past century with diatom-inferred TP (DI-TP) concentrations of between 70 and 300 μg l−1. The main factors influencing these dike-breach lakes are river management, ground water supply of riverine origin, and local land use. The second group are artificial lakes of fluctuating oligo- to mesotrophic conditions and DI-TP concentrations of 10–30 μg l−1. Only one of the artificial lakes showed a DI-TP increase due to changes in catchment agricultural practice. A third group includes an artificial moat and an inland dike-breach lake with DI-TP concentrations of 50–100 μg l−1. The fourth group contains an individual dike-breach lake with stable mesotrophic conditions of 50 μg l−1 throughout the past century. Rather than showing a regional pattern, the studied lakes behave very individualistically with regard to their trophic history, reflecting changes in the local hydrology and in their nutrient sources.  相似文献

Aluminum in lake water and in the organs of the fish Tribolodon hakonensis was investigated in Lake Usoriko (pH 3.6), Lake Inawashiroko (pH 5.0), and the Tenryu River (pH 7.7). The concentration of total soluble aluminum in the water was 0.51 mg l−1 in Usoriko, 0.05 mg l−1 in Inawashiroko, and less than 0.01 mg l−1 in the Tenryu. The chemical forms of soluble aluminum in the acid water were characterized as Al3+, AlL2+, and AlL≦1+. More than 90% of soluble aluminum in the water of Usoriko was Al3+, whereas AlL2+ was dominant in the water of Inawashiroko. The aluminum concentration in the organs of T. hakonensis in Usoriko was 42 μg g−1 wet weight in gills, 4.2 μg g−1 in muscle, 6.9 μg g−1 in bone, 12.7 μg g−1 in liver, 6.0 μg g−1 in kidney, and 6.0 μg g−1 in intestine, indicating accumulation of aluminum in the gills. The aluminum concentration in the organs of T. hakonensis living in Inawashiroko was approximately the same, in spite of the difference in water chemistry of the two acid lakes, especially for pH and aluminum. This suggests that aluminum accumulation might be controlled in the fish living in the acid lakes. In contrast, the aluminum concentration in the gills of T. hakonensis from the Tenryu was 2 μg g−1.  Benthic algal mats from four lakes located on Inexpressible Island (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica) were studied, analysing their structure and floristic composition. Thirty taxa of algae were identified: 11 Cyanophyta, 15 Bacillariophyta and 4 Chlorophyta. The lake mats contained from 15 (lake C) to 26 species (lake D). The number of diatom frustules in the mats varied from 771×103 (lake C) to 9428×103 frustules g-1 (lake B). In terms of floristic composition and macromorphology, these mats were observed to be very similar to moat mats described from Lake Gondwana (northern Victoria Land) and the Dry Valleys lakes of southern Victoria Land. Three field experiments were performed in Lake Lacawac, PA to determine the importance of potentially limiting nutrients relative to other factors (grazing, depth) in structuring shallow water algal periphyton communities. All three experiments measured periphyton growth (as chlorophyll-a, AFDM or biovolumes of the algal taxa) on artificial clay flower pot substrates which released specified nutrients to their outer surfaces.Control of standing crop by nutrient supply rate vs. grazing was examined in Expt. I. Substrates releasing excess N and P, together with one of 4 levels of C (as bicarbonate) were placed either inside or outside exclosures designed to reduce grazer densities. Chlorophyll-a rose from 1.1–25.6 µg.cm–2, and some dominant taxa (e.g., Oedogonium, Nostoc, Anacystis) were replaced by others (e.g., Scenedesmus, Cryptomonas) as bicarbonate supply increased. Reductions in invertebrate density did not significantly affect chlorophyll-a at any of the nutrient levels.Reasons for the species shift were further evaluated in Expt. II, using a minielectrode to measure the elevation of pH within the periphyton mat through photosynthetic utilization of bicarbonate. The pH adjacent to pots diffusing N, P and large quantities of bicarbonate, and supporting high chlorophyll-a densities of 32 µg cm–2, averaged 10.0 compared to 6.3 in the water column. Pots diffusing only N and P supported 0.7 µg chlorophyll-a cm–2 and elevated pH to 8.2. We suspect that bicarbonate addition favored efficient bicarbonate users (e.g., Scenedesmus), while inhibiting other taxa (e.g., Oedogonium) because of the attendant high pH.Expt. III was designed to test effects of depth (0.1 m vs. 0.5 m) and N (NH4 + vs. NO3 ) upon the growth response to bicarbonate observed in Expts. I and II. Similar standing crop and species composition were noted on pots at 0.1 m vs. 0.5 m. Enrichment with NH4 + vs. NO3 also appeared to have little effect upon the periphyton community.Shallow water periphyton communities in Lake Lacawac, when supplied with sufficient N and P, appear to show a distinctive response to increasing bicarbonate concentration and pH which is robust to moderate variation in grazer densities, distance from the water surface, and the form of N enrichment.  相似文献

In January 2004 the microplankton community from the coastal waters of Terre Adélie and Georges V Land (139°E–145°E) was studied. Results showed a diatom-dominated bloom with chlorophyll a levels averaging 0.64 μg l−1 at 5 m depth (range 0.21–1.57 μg l−1). Three geographic assemblages of diatoms were identified, based on principal diatom taxa abundances. The stratified waters near the Mertz Glacier presented highest phytoplankton biomasses (0.28–1.57 μg Chl a l−1 at 5 m) and diatom abundances (6,507–70,274 cells l−1 at 5 m), but low diversity, dominated by Fragilariopsis spp. Lower biomasses (0.38–0.94 μg Chl a l−1 at 5 m) and abundances (394–9,058 cells l−1 at 5 m) were observed in the mixed waters around the Astrolabe Glacier with a diverse diatom community characterised by larger species Corethron pennatum and Rhizosolenia spp. Finally an intermediate zone between them over the shallower shelf waters of the Adélie Bank represented by Chaetoceros criophilus, where biomasses (0.21–0.35 μg Chl a l−1 at 5 m) and abundances (1,190–5,431 cells l−1 at 5 m) were lowest, coinciding with the presence of abundant herbivorous zooplankton.  相似文献
