Summary Highest uptake of32P by young shoots of three plant species was observed and lowest by old ones. The uptake of32P was highest inHydrilla shoots, followed byVallisneria andPotamogeton.Kinetin (0.23 mM) pretreatment (24 h) increased the uptake of32P, while 0.69 mM ethrel or 0.075 mM ABA decreased it in all species.32P was transported to the largest extent to the young shoots of the submerged plants and to the smallest extent to the old ones by kinetin pretreatment. Kinetin enhanced the uptake of32P most inHydrilla shoots, followed byVallisneria andPotamogeton. Ethrel diminished32P uptake most inPotamogeton shoots and to the smallest extent inHydrilla, while ABA lowered it most inHydrilla shoots and to the smallest extent inPotamogeton. Kinetin, ethrel and ABA can modify the uptake of32P of these aquatic plants.  相似文献

1. We used a corer and a Downing box sampler to sample macroinvertebrates living on and beneath the introduced Trapa natans and the native Vallisneria americana in the freshwater tidal Hudson River, New York. 2. Densities of macroinvertebrates were higher in Trapa than in Vallisneria, and higher in the interior of plant beds than at their edges. These effects were largely a result of high plant biomass in Trapa beds and in bed interiors (the plants have similar surface area per unit mass). 3. The composition of both epiphytic and benthic macroinvertebrates differed distinctly between Trapa and Vallisneria, and also seasonally. 4. These compositional differences were not easily interpretable as rising from possible differences in oxygen concentrations, fish predation, or water circulation in the two macrophytes. 5. Sida crystallina (Cladocera) collected from Trapa contained more haemoglobin than those collected from Vallisneria. 6. The replacement of Vallisneria by Trapa in the Hudson probably increased system‐wide biodiversity and food for fish, although macroinvertebrates in Trapa beds may not be readily available to fish because of low oxygen concentration there.  相似文献

Chemically inert, cylindrical rods positioned in the littoral of two eutrophic Alberta lakes supported higher periphytic algal biomass (measured as total chlorophyll a) than nearby morphologically similar culms of Scirpus validus Vahl. during most of the summer. Upon initiation of macrophyte senescence, biomass on the two substrata became more similar. Experiments were conducted to investigate the basis for these observations. Whole extracts of intact vegetative Scirpus culms had no effect on periphyton photosynthesis, suggesting that the natural substrata do not produce water-soluble allelochemicals. Various modifications of the rod surfaces (roughening, wax coating, wax color) were used to test whether surficial properties of Scirpus culms influenced periphyton accumulation. Roughened rods supported levels of biomass similar to those of smooth rods, and both substrata developed structurally complex periphyton communities. Rods covered with paraffin wax had periphyton communities that were lower in biomass and structurally more simple than those on un-coated rods or on Scirpus culms. Coloring of the wax coating had no consistent effect on periphyton accumulation. We hypothesize that the hydrophobic cuticle on actively growing Scirpus culms retards the development of precursors for attachment by periphytic algae. Upon senescence of the culm and loss of epidermal integrity, colonization of culm surfaces by periphytic algae may occur in a manner similar to that on artificial substrata.  相似文献

The strangler figs, Ficus pertusa and F. trigonata, are abundant in the seasonally flooded palm savanna (llanos intermedio) near Calabozo, Venezuela. The most common host tree for the hemiepiphytic figs is the palm Copernicia tectorum; nearly half of the palms support either an epiphytic or a ground-rooted fig. During their epiphytic stage the figs are rooted behind the palms' marcescent leaf bases. Material trapped behind the leaf bases is higher in organic matter, nitrogen, magnesium, and potassium than soil from the ground near the palms. The suggestion that nutrient availability to epiphytes is high is supported by the observation that concentrations of several nutrients, including N, P, and K, are significantly higher in epiphytic leaves than in tree leaves. Figs retain access to the epiphytic medium by producing upwardly growing (apogeotropic) roots that remain attached in the host palm's crown long after the fig has become firmly rooted in the ground. Although upward growing roots are expected to be more important in nutrient than water uptake, there are no obvious differences in the xylem anatomy of upward and downward growing fig roots. Terrestrial roots of fig trees are generally infected with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae, but the epiphytic roots of the same individuals are not infected.  相似文献

Biomass assessments of algae in wetlands usually include only the phytoplankton community without considering the contribution of other algal associations to total algal biomass. This omission prevents an accurate evaluation of the phytoplankton community as an integral part of the total ecosystem. In the present work, the biomass contributions (expressed as chlorophyll-a content per m2 of lake) of phytoplankton, epiphyton on both submerged and emergent macrophytes, and epipelon were measured in Lacombe Lake, Argentina, for the purpose of (1) establishing the relative importance of the phytoplankton and (2) evaluating the entire contribution of algal biomass within the context of the Goldsborough & Robinson conceptual model. Our sampling was carried out monthly for a year in sites representative of different conditions with respect to water depth and type of macrophytes. Physicochemical analyses of water were performed following standard methods. Plankton was collected in a five-level profile at deeper stations and in subsurface samples at the shallow one. Samples of sediment obtained with corers were collected for epipelon sampling and segments of plants were cut at different levels, so as to obtain the epiphytes by scraping. Pigment was extracted with aqueous acetone and calculations were made by means of the Lorenzen equation. According to the Goldsborough & Robinson model, a Lake State developed here during the winter (phytoplankton maxima: 150 mg chlorophyll-a per m2). Then, through the subsequent growth of the submerged macrophytes, an Open State was observed, characterized by a maximum epiphyton biomass (at 3,502 mg chlorophyll-a per m2) along with lower levels of phytoplankton biomass. The epiphytic algae on the emergent macrophytes were always present but attained only relatively low biomass values (maximum: 120 mg of chlorophyll-a per m2 in February). The epipelon biomass varied between 50 and 252 mg chlorophyll-a per m2, registering a considerable contribution of settled algae from the water column (phytoplankton). This study contributes to our knowledge of wetland dynamics through its assessment of the rapid changes in the relative contributions of both planktonic and attached algae to the total algal biomass within the context of specific environmental factors. 1. An in situ experiment was performed in the littoral zone of a large, subtropical lake to quantify effects of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) on algal biomass, productivity, nutrient content and phosphate uptake kinetics. 2. We hypothesized that resident periphyton rapidly sequester added nutrients from the water column, but once a certain threshold is reached, nutrients remain in the water and permit a shift to a phytoplankton-dominated community. 3. Three duplicate sets of 1.2-m diameter mesocosms were treated with 10, 20 or 50 μg P L??1 in combination with 100, 200 or 500 μg N L??1, respectively. The nutrients were added thrice weekly for 14 days, after which the treatment doses were doubled for an additional 9 days. The cumulative amounts of P and N added over the course of the study were 700 and 7000 μg L??1, respectively. Two untreated mesocosms and two open reference sites were used as controls. 4. The total P concentration in the water column of nutrient-treated mesocosms remained low, even after prolonged high dosing. However, there was a two-fold increase in the P content of surface algal mats and epiphyton. This indicates that some of the added P was sequestered by those components of the community. In contrast, metaphyton and epipelon displayed little or no increase in their P content. Large quantities of added P could not be accounted for in the periphyton community, and may reflect unmeasured losses to the sediments or other pools. 5. Nitrogen also was depleted from the water column, but there were no significant increases in periphyton N content. Much of the added N could not be accounted for in mass balances, and may have been lost from the mesocosms through volatilization or other biochemical processes. 6. Chlorophyll-a in epiphyton increased significantly after 14 days in the highest nutrient treatment, where there also was a proliferation of Spirogyra on day 28. 7. On day 28, water column samples from the highest nutrient treatment also displayed a significantly higher rate of carbon uptake, and a significantly higher concentration of midday dissolved oxygen. 8. The hypothesis that phytoplankton become dominant at high nutrient loading rates was not supported. However, there were dramatic changes in community structure (increased dominance by epiphytic Spirogyra) and function (increased productivity and dissolved oxygen) in response to nutrient additions.  相似文献

1. Nutrient and fish manipulations in mesocosms were carried out on food‐web interactions in a Mediterranean shallow lake in south‐east Spain. Nutrients controlled biomass of phytoplankton and periphyton, while zooplankton, regulated by planktivorous fish, influenced the relative percentages of the dominant phytoplankton species. 2. Phytoplankton species diversity decreased with increasing nutrient concentration and planktivorous fish density. Cyanobacteria grew well in both turbid and clear‐water states. 3. Planktivorous fish increased concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). Larger zooplankters (mostly Ceriodaphnia and copepods) were significantly reduced when fish were present, whereas rotifers increased, after fish removal of cyclopoid predators and other filter feeders (cladocerans, nauplii). The greatest biomass and diversity of zooplankton was found at intermediate nutrient levels, in mesocosms without fish and in the presence of macrophytes. 4. Water level decrease improved underwater light conditions and favoured macrophyte persistence. Submerged macrophytes (Chara spp.) outcompeted algae up to an experimental nutrient loading equivalent to added concentrations of 0.06 mg L?1 PO4‐P and 0.6 mg L?1 NO3‐N, above which an exponential increase in periphyton biomass and algal turbidity caused characean biomass to decline. 5. Declining water levels during summer favoured plant‐associated rotifer species and chroococcal cyanobacteria. High densities of chroococcal cyanobacteria were related to intermediate nutrient enrichment and the presence of small zooplankton taxa, while filamentous cyanobacteria were relatively more abundant in fishless mesocosms, in which Crustacea were more abundant, and favoured by dim underwater light. 6. Benthic macroinvertebrates increased significantly at intermediate nutrient levels but there was no relationship with planktivorous fish density. 7. The thresholds of nutrient loading and in‐lake P required to avoid a turbid state and maintain submerged macrophytes were lower than those reported from temperate shallow lakes. Mediterranean shallow lakes may remain turbid with little control of zooplankton on algal biomass, as observed in tropical and subtropical lakes. Nutrient loading control and macrophyte conservation appear to be especially important in these systems to maintain high water quality.  相似文献

Epiphyton and epipelon were quantitatively collected, respectively, from the submerged macrophytes and the sandy lake bottom of Lake Vechten (The Netherlands). On a weight basis, epiphyton was maximal in autumn and epipelon in summer. In winter the chemical composition of epiphyton and epipelon was similar. In summer the epiphyton had on a unit weight basis more organic matter and carbonate, and had per unit organic matter a higher algal number, nitrogen and energy content than the epipelon. Algae predominating the epiphyton were filamentous greens and pennate diatoms; those in the epipelon were pennate diatoms and blue-green algae. In both cases, species known to frequent the phytoplankton were abundant. The diatoms were quantified using paper chromatographic pigment analyses. Both the epiphyton and the epipelon exhibited maximal photosynthesis in mid summer. That light was generally the limiting factor was evident from periphyton developed on artificial substrates. This periphyton differed widely in its composition from that on the natural substrates, mainly because the latter collected much more sedimenting matter. In dense Ceratophyllum stands light was severely attenuated and the significant gradients in oxygen and pH were caused by the differences with depth in the proportions of photosynthesis and respiration. The oxygen content and pH at the bottom decreased owing to epipelic respiration. The epiphytic composition depended greatly on the degree of light attenuation. The epiphytic and epipelic respiration, except during part of the early summer, exceeded photosynthesis on a 24 h basis; this included the macrophytic photosynthesis during the time the vegetation was maximally developed. During the growing season import of organic matter, i.e. deposited seston, greatly exceeded that due to the photosynthetic production. After the summer maximum, the epipelon decreased faster than predicted from its oxygen exchange. It was concluded that sedimentation and resuspension determined mainly the changes in epiphyton and epipelon. Especially when covered with vegetation, the lower littoral of Lake Vechten plays a large part in the aerobic decomposition of sestonic organic matter.  相似文献

The Interlake region of central Manitoba is characterized by numerous shallow, relatively unproductive wetlands. Typically, these wetlands are poorly utilized by breeding waterfowl in spite of generally reliable water conditions during spring and summer. Nutrient additions were made throughout the growing season to 18 PVC enclosures installed in a low productivity wetland near Lundar, Manitoba. Inorganic phosphorus (as H3PO4) and nitrogen (as NH4NO3) were added at bi-weekly intervals during the summer of 1988 at target rates of 0 and 0, 30 and 800, and 60 and 1600 µg 1–1 (P and N respectively). Algal and invertebrate communities were monitored from mid-June to September, 1988. Phytoplankton, epiphytic periphyton and metaphyton communities demonstrated significant increases in biomass over the treatment period. No significant differences in epipelon community biomass were noted. An examination of several indicators of nutrient deficiency indicated that algal productivity was moderately to severely limited in all enclosures, with little or no mitigative effects noted due to nutrient addition treatment. No significant differences in numbers or biomass of total invertebrates or invertebrate functional groups attributed to fertilization were observed. Nutrient additions did increase community productivity, however the levels used in this study were insufficient to yield a sustained increase in primary or secondary productivity.  相似文献

The capability of Chara beds to act as nutrient sinks in shallow lakes is reviewed. Under favorable conditions charophytes form dense meadows. Biomass and nutrient content in such beds are comparable or even higher than in beds of vascular aquatic macrophytes. As some Chara species are capable of overwintering, the nutrient storage in plant biomass may extend beyond the growing season. Some commonly observed phenomena in vascular plants (nutrient uptake and mobilization of nutrients from the sediment) appear to be unlikely or negligible in Characeae. Charophytes have been reported to decompose slower than their vascular counterparts prolonging nutrient storage in plant biomass.Charophytes may also indirectly affect nutrient cycling in lakes. Utilization of bicarbonate is accompanied by precipitation of calcite during periods of intensive photosynthesis, favoring immobilization of P by binding in the crystal structure or sorption on sedimenting mineral particles. Charophytes are able to deliver oxygen to the sediment, thus potentially enhancing nitrification/denitrification processes and preventing iron-bound sediment phosphorus from being released to the overlying water. Furthermore, dense Chara meadows restrict sediment resuspension, consequently blocking an important internal source of nutrients to planktonic algae. We conclude that Chara meadows probably are an efficient nutrient trap in shallow lakes.  相似文献

Macrophytes and phytoplankton are recognized as having roles in determining alternative stable states in shallow lakes and reservoirs, while the role of periphyton has been poorly investigated. Temporal and spatial variation of phytoplankton, epipelon and epiphyton was examined in a shallow reservoir with high abundance of aquatic macrophytes. The relationships between algae communities and abiotic factors, macrophyte coverage and zooplankton density were also analyzed. Monthly sampling was performed in three zones of the depth gradient of the reservoir. Two phases of algal dominance were found: a phytoplankton phase and epipelon phase. The phase of phytoplankton dominance was characterized by high macrophyte coverage. Rotifera was the dominant zooplankton group in all the zones. Flagellate algae were dominant in phytoplankton, epipelon and epiphyton. Macrophyte coverage was found to be a predictor for algal biomass. Changes in biomass and species composition were associated with macrophyte cover variation, mainly the Nymphaea. In addition to the abiotic factors, the macrophyte coverage was a determining factor for changes to the algal community, contributing to the alternation between dominance phases of phytoplankton and epipelon. The macrophyte–phytoplankton–periphyton relationship needs to be further known in shallow reservoirs, especially the role of epipelon as an alternate stable state.

Invasion of a Habitat-Forming Seaweed: Effects on Associated Biota   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fucus evanescens is a brown alga of arctic origin that has invaded European coasts. The epiphytic community of F. evanescens in southern Sweden was compared with that of the native Fucus vesiculosus, to examine to what extent an invading seaweed can modify local biodiversity. F. evanescens was much less fouled than F. vesiculosus, supporting both less biomass and fewer species of epiphytes. Multivariate analysis of the most common epiphyte taxa showed that the epiphytic community composition of F. evanescens was not entirely separated from that of F. vesiculosus, but host species contributed significantly to explain the variation in community composition. The biomass of free-living invertebrates was also lower on F. evanescens, although the pattern differed between taxonomic groups. While the biomass of amphipods was lower on F. evanescens, there was no significant difference in biomass of isopods or gastropods between the Fucus species. The good correlation between biomass of epiphytes and free-living animals suggests that the epiphytes play an important role in providing a suitable habitat for many species of free-living epifauna. The study shows that the invasion of F. evanescens affects the environmental conditions for many species associated with the Fucus community but that the direct effect on biodiversity is probably low.  相似文献

1. Anthropogenic activities in prairie streams are increasing nutrient inputs and altering stream communities. Understanding the role of large consumers such as fish in regulating periphyton structure and nutritional content is necessary to predict how changing diversity will interact with nutrient enrichment to regulate stream nutrient processing and retention. 2. We characterised the importance of grazing fish on stream nutrient storage and cycling following a simulated flood under different nutrient regimes by crossing six nutrient concentrations with six densities of a grazing minnow (southern redbelly dace, Phoxinus erythrogaster) in large outdoor mesocosms. We measured the biomass and stoichiometry of overstory and understory periphyton layers, the stoichiometry of fish tissue and excretion, and compared fish diet composition with available algal assemblages in pools and riffles to evaluate whether fish were selectively foraging within or among habitats. 3. Model selection indicated nutrient loading and fish density were important to algal composition and periphyton carbon (C): nitrogen (N). Nutrient loading increased algal biomass, favoured diatom growth over green algae and decreased periphyton C : N. Increasing grazer density did not affect biomass and reduced the C : N of overstory, but not understory periphyton. Algal composition of dace diet was correlated with available algae, but there were proportionately more diatoms present in dace guts. We found no correlation between fish egestion/excretion nutrient ratios and nutrient loading or fish density despite varying N content of periphyton. 4. Large grazers and nutrient availability can have a spatially distinct influence at a microhabitat scale on the nutrient status of primary producers in streams.  相似文献

The epiphytic component of four monospecific seagrass beds from Papua New Guinea was studied structurally and functionally. The floristic composition and abundance of the epiphytes on leaves of four seagrass species (Cymodoceoideae) showed considerable variation, but on all four seagrass species, the same algae were among the five quantitatively most important epiphytes: encrusting coralline algae, Cyanophyta, Ceramium gracillimum (Harv.) Mazoyer, Polysiphonia savatierii Hariot and Audouinella spp. The temporal pattern of the epiphytic algae showed more or less the same features on the four seagrass species.Annual mean biomass of epiphytes and seagrass leaves ranged from 54 g ADW m?2 in a community of Cymodocea rotundata Ehrenb. and Hempr. ex Aschers. to 169 g ADW m?2 in a community of Syringodium isoetifolium (Aschers.) Dandy. The contribution of the epiphytic component to the total above-ground biomass ranged from 22 to 24%. Productivity of epiphytes was highest on leaves of Halodule uninervis (Forssk.) Aschers. (2.12 g ADW m?2 sediment surface day?1) and the epiphytic community contributed 35–44% of the total above-ground production of these four seagrass communities.  相似文献

We studied how differences in periphyton colonization interval and snail density affected grazing rates in Physella virgata, and whether snails controlled periphyton biomass. Both egestion rates and incorporation rates of 14C labeled periphyton were estimated in laboratory experiments. Periphyton biomass increased with field colonization interval in all experiments, but did not consistently influence estimates of grazing rate. However, increased periphyton abundance in one of the experiments could still explain higher grazer rates in that year, although larger snail body size is a confounding explanation. Increased snail density also resulted in decreased grazing rates, as observed in earlier studies with this snail species, as well as in studies with other snail grazers. Our results suggest grazing rates and resulting impacts may change seasonally with variation in either periphyton biomass, grazer life-history stage or population density.  相似文献

Herbivores can have both direct (consumptive) and indirect (nutrient‐mediated) effects on primary producer biomass and nutrient stoichiometry. Ecological stoichiometry theory predicts that herbivores of contrasting body stoichiometry will differentially remineralize nutrients, resulting in feedbacks on producer stoichiometry. We experimentally separated direct and indirect effects of aquatic vertebrate grazers on periphyton by manipulating grazer abundance and identity in mesocosms, and using grazer exclusion cages to expose periphyton to recycled nutrients in the absence of direct grazing. In experiment 1, we used a catfish with high body phosphorus (low body N:P), Ancistrus triradiatus, to assess consumptive versus nutrient‐mediated effects of grazer density on periphyton. In experiment 2, we compared the nutrient‐mediated effects of grazing by Ancistrus triradiatus and Rana palmipes, a tadpole with low body phosphorus and high body N:P. In experiment 1, we found that increasing catfish density led to lower biomass and particulate nutrients in periphyton through direct consumptive effects, but that nutrient‐mediated indirect effects enhanced periphyton biomass when grazers were experimentally separated from direct contact with periphyton. As predicted by stoichiometry theory, nutrient recycling by this P‐rich grazer tended to increase algal C:P and N:P (although effects were not statistically significant), while their consumptive effects reduced algal C:P and N:P. In experiment 2, grazer identity had strong effects on dissolved water nutrient concentrations, N recycling (measured with a 15N tracer), and periphyton stoichiometry. In accordance with stoichiometry theory, catfish increased N concentrations and recycling rates leading to higher periphyton N:P, while tadpoles had greater effects on P availability leading to lower periphyton N:P. Our experiments elucidate the importance of both the density and identity of grazers in controlling periphyton biomass and stoichiometry through consumptive and nutrient‐mediated effects, and support the power of ecological stoichiometry theory to predict feedbacks on producer stroichiometry arising from consumer stoichiometry through nutrient recycling.  相似文献

Controls on periphyton biomass in heterotrophic streams   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Headwater streams of the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) are typically characterised by a periphyton assemblage of low biomass and diversity. However, periphyton blooms have been observed following catchment deforestation experiments and occasionally during the annual spring thaw before canopy leaf‐out. 2. There is pronounced seasonal variation in both nutrient and light availability in HBEF streams. Stream water nitrogen (N) concentrations and light levels are higher before canopy leaf‐out and after leaf senescence and are lower during the growing season. Periphyton accrual rates also change seasonally; they are highest in spring prior to leaf‐out and significantly lower during summer and in autumn. 3. Periphyton biomass rarely responded positively to in‐situ experimental enrichment with nitrogen or phosphorus. In the summer, nutrient enrichment overall had no effect on periphyton biomass, while outside the growing season N enrichment had inhibitory effects on periphyton. 4. Despite these experimental results, surveys of ambient chlorophyll a concentrations in streams across the HBEF demonstrated no relationship between streamwater dissolved inorganic N or P concentrations and benthic chlorophyll a. 5. Our results suggest that HBEF periphyton communities are not closely regulated by nutrient availability, even during periods of high light availability. The inhibitory effects of nutrient enrichment outside the growing season are interesting, but further research is necessary to elucidate the mechanisms driving these responses.  相似文献

1. Phosphate uptake kinetics and uptake rates were calculated for planktonic (phytoplankton and bacterioplankton) and benthic (epiphyton and epipelon) assemblages in a large, shallow, subtropical lake. Samples were taken bimonthly over the period of 1 year at three different sites to examine spatial and temporal variability in these processes. 2. Two of the sites, located at the edge of the littoral zone next to the open water (ecotone sites), had low irradiance at the sediment surface and high total phosphorus (TP) concentration (annual mean TP = 112 μg L–1). The third site, located in the littoral marsh zone, had high irradiance at the sediment surface and low TP concentration (annual mean TP = 7 μg L–1). 3. Based on 32P-PO4 turnover time, P availability varied temporally and spatially. At the two high TP ecotone sites, P concentration was lowest in July and August. At the low TP marsh site, P limited algal production throughout the year. 4. The quotient of maximum uptake rate to half saturation constant (Vm/Ks) in the plankton increased by over two orders of magnitude during the P-limited (summer) period at the two ecotone sites, suggesting that plankton used the scarce phosphorus more efficiently. The specific uptake rate of plankton was significantly greater than that of periphyton at all sites, suggesting that the plankton were more efficient than periphyton at taking up phosphate. 5. Periphyton biomass, as well as absolute and percentage P uptake rate, was greater at the marsh site than at the ecotone sites, despite the lower P concentrations in the marsh. This was probably a result of rapid nutrient cycling, combined with high light availability in the marsh.  相似文献

Periphyton removal related to phosphorus and grazer biomass level   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
1. The proliferation of nuisance periphyton in enriched streams may be dependent on the biomass of the grazing macroinvertebrates present. In the present study, the effectiveness of grazer size and biomass in controlling periphyton and the extent to which grazing effectiveness was affected by enrichment level were determined. 2. Two sets of experiments with two caddisfly grazers were conducted in laboratory channels during spring and summer 1995 and 1996. The first set tested the combined effect of phosphorus enrichment and grazing, while the second set tested the effect of variable grazer biomass on periphyton biomass. 3. Grazing reduced periphyton biomass in excess of 80%, compared to ungrazed controls. Grazers were equally effective in controlling filamentous green algae, Stigeoclonium, diatoms and small colonial greens. Near complete removal of periphyton biomass by grazing occurred at even at the lowest grazer biomass level (750 mg m??2, i.e. approximately one-third of natural levels). 4. Grazing controlled periphyton biomass more than did enrichment with soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). 5. Grazing rates in the phosphorus-grazing interaction experiments averaged about 6 mg chl a g invertebrate??1 day??1, which was similar to past work in these channels and elsewhere, while rates were about five-fold higher in the variable grazer biomass experiments. 6. Simulating effects of SRP and grazing with a calibrated model suggests that higher SRP levels would be necessary to exceed a nuisance periphyton biomass level if grazers were present. However, if grazer biomass was more than 1500 mg m??2, a nuisance level would probably not be exceeded at any SRP.  相似文献

The ostracod Cypridopsis vidua prefers periphyton growing on Chara fragilis to other feeding substrates. This species actively searches for periphyton, scrapes it off from Chara stems and handles it with a well organized feeding technique. When exposed to different quantities of periphyton on Chara stems, C. vidua selects foraging sites according to their nutritional value. When exposed to low quantities of water from tanks containing fish, C. vidua responds to these weak chemical cues moving from uncovered areas into Chara plants. Experiments with juvenile cyprinids (Abramis brama) as predators and C. vidua as prey clearly showed that the presence of Chara reduces fish foraging success and that C. vidua survival rate increases with increasing density of Chara.  相似文献
