On 11 July 1997, the mating behavior of wild manta rays,Manta birostris, was observed while skin diving off Chichijima. Ogasawara Islands, Japan, and recorded with 49 underwater photographs and about 20 minutes of video tape. The female manta ray involved was estimated as being approximately 5 m in dise width (DW) and the two males involved, approximately 4 m DW. Copulatory behavior of the two males appeared to be almost the same, copulation itself being of the abdomen-to-abdomen type. Initially, the males chased the female for 20–30 minutes, all animals swimming at approximately 10 km/h. Each copulation event occurred within one meter of the surface, during which time the participating male grasped the tip of the female's left pectoral fin with his mouth. The clasper was inserted for 90 seconds (Male No. 1) and 60 seconds (Male No. 2), respectively. The mating behavior sequence of the manta rays involved following five steps. 1.: Male chases behind the tail of the female, attempting (several times) to grasp the latter's pectoral fin (chasing behavior). 2.: Male bites the tip of the female's pectoral fin, before positioning itself against the latter's underside (biting behavior). 3.: Male inserts a clasper into the cloaca of the female (copulating behavior). 4.: Male removes the clasper from the cloaca of the female, but continues biting the latter's pectoral fin (post-copulating behavior). 5.: Male releases the pectoral fin of the female, setting her free (separating behavior).

The dermal layers of several elasmobranch species have been shown to be sexually dimorphic. Generally, when this occurs the females have thicker dermal layers compared to those of males. This sexual dimorphism has been suggested to occur as a response to male biting during mating. Although male biting as a copulatory behaviour in Scyliorhinus canicula has been widely speculated to occur, only relatively recently has this behaviour been observed. Male S. canicula use their mouths to bite the female’s pectoral and caudal fins as part of their pre-copulatory behaviour and to grasp females during copulation. Previous work has shown that female S. canicula have a thicker epidermis compared to that of males. The structure of the dermal denticles in females may also differ from that of males in order to protect against male biting or to provide a greater degree of friction in order to allow the male more purchase. This study reveals that the length, width and density of the dermal denticles of mature male and female S. canicula are sexually dimorphic across the integument in areas where males have been observed to bite and wrap themselves around females (pectoral fin, area posterior to the pectoral fin, caudal fin, and pelvic girdle). No significant differences in the dermal denticle dimensions were found in other body areas examined (head, dorsal skin and caudal peduncle). Sexually dimorphic dermal denticles in mature S. canicula could be a response to male biting/wrapping as part of the copulatory process.

Benthic animals live at the juncture of fluid and solid environments, an interface that shapes many aspects of their behavior, including their means of locomotion. Aquatic walking and similar substrate-dependent forms of underwater propulsion have evolved multiple times in benthic invertebrate and vertebrate taxa, including batoid elasmobranchs. Skates (Rajidae) use the pelvic fins to punt across the substrate, keeping the pectoral fin disc still. Other batoids combine pelvic fin motions with pectoral fin undulation in augmented punting, but the coordination of these two modes has not been described. In this study of an augmented punter, the freshwater stingray Potamotrygon orbignyi, we demonstrate the synchrony of pelvic and pectoral fin cycles. The punt begins as the pelvic fins, held in an anterior position, are planted into the substrate and used to push the body forward. Meanwhile, a wave of pectoral fin undulation begins, increasing to maximum height just before the cycle's halfway point, when the pelvic fins reach their furthest posterior extension. The pectoral fin wave subsides as the pelvic fins return to their starting position for subsequent punts. Despite definitive links between pectoral and pelvic fin activity, we find no significant relationship between pectoral fin kinematics (frequency, wave height, and wave speed) and punt performance. However, slip calculations indicate that pectoral undulation can produce thrust and augment punting. Pelvic fin kinematics (frequency and duty factor) have significant effects, suggesting that while both sets of fins contribute to thrust generation, the pelvic fins likely determine punt performance.

Hongeo gen. nov. is proposed following examinations of several individuals, including adult males, of the type species Raja koreana, previously described from a single adult female specimen from the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. A number of external (including claspers, squamation, and ampullary and lateral line canal systems) and skeletal characters are newly described. The phylogenetic position of R. koreana among 26 nominal rajid supraspecific taxa plus 2 unnamed supraspecific taxa of Rajidae and 3 outgroups was estimated. According to a strict consensus tree of 20 equally parsimonious trees of 139 steps (CI = 0.626; RI = 0.850; RC = 0.532; HI = 0.374), Hongeo gen. nov. is defined by the two derived character states: rostral cartilage continuous with neurocranium and stout proximally, but very slender and uncalcified distally; and anterior fontanelle broad, extending forward onto the basal part of rostral cartilage slightly beyond the leading edge of nasal capsules. The new genus also differs from all other supraspecific taxa of Rajidae in the following combination of characters: dorsal surface of tail with a row of distinct thorns along midline in both sexes; most thorns directed anteriorly; a pair of longitudinally elongated black blotches having undulated contours on middle of dorsal surface of disc; three groups of outer buccal ampullae and tubules; three groups of nasal ampullae and tubules; hyoidean ampullae and tubules on ventral surface posteriorly extending past cloaca; rostral shaft narrow with filamentous cartilage at base; scapulocoracoid comparatively short and high with dorsoventrally elliptical anterior fenestra and expanded postventral fenestra; external margin of mesopterygium of pectoral fin slightly undulated, not sinuous, and not fused with pectoral radials; and clasper component eperon and pent present.

Morphological sexual differences and their effects on male mating success were investigated in the tailspot wrasse, Halichoeres melanurus, on a subtropical coral reef of Okinawa, southern Japan. Male mating territories were established along the reef edge from late April to early October, during which time pair-spawning occurred just before sunset in the male territories. Territorial males were larger and brighter than females in this protogynous fish. The males had longer, colorful ventral fins and colorful caudal fins, both of which were used during courtship. Multiple regression analysis of the effects of male characteristics on male mating success revealed that the yellow spot at the pectoral fin base was the most effective. It is suggested that large body size is favored in male–male competition for establishing mating territories and that conspicuous body color is favored in female mate choice.

A new chimaerid species closely related to Hydrolagus pallidus is described from 13 specimens captured on the Portuguese continental slope (north‐east Atlantic) by commercial longliners at depths of c . 1600 m. The new species is large‐bodied with a rose to light brown body colouration. Hydrolagus lusitanicus n.sp. presents a combination of external morphological characters that allow it to be clearly differentiated from its congeners, in particular, the ratios of pectoral fin length: pectoral fin width and pelvic fin length: pelvic fin width; in having a serrated posterior edge of the dorsal spine; a high number of ridges in the dental plates. Additionally in males, there are differences on the shape and number of hooks in the frontal tenacula, on the number of spines in the prepelvic tenacula and on the length of the pectoral fin margin.

Elasmobranch fishes exhibit a series of complex courtship and mating behaviours in which males inflict significant bite wounds to the body of female mates. However, the variety and frequency of mating wounds are not known across a full reproductive season for any species. We examined the distribution and abundance of dermal wounds in adult Atlantic stingrays, Dasyatis sabina, which have a protracted and defined mating season to determine (1) if dermal wounds can be used as indicators of mating activity, (2) whether different categories of bite wounds can be associated with specific mating behaviours, and (3) whether the skin thickness in females is sexually dimorphic. Adults of both sexes showed fresh wounds during the full duration of the mating season (October–June) and there was no relationship between ray size and wound density. Females had more total wounds than males in every month with a maximum average of 20.2 wounds per female in April. Mating wounds were categorized into five distinct forms: single track, double track, bite, margin abrasion and excision. Wounds were randomly distributed over the body of males but concentrated on the posterior half of the disc in females. Each wound type occurred in approximately equal proportions among sexes with the exception of the precopulatory and copulatory-induced margin abrasions which accounted for 13.7% of the total wounds in females but only 3.1% in males. We suggest that the pronounced and concurrent appearance of single track, double track and bite wounds among males results from random premating courtship attacks by males because females cannot be visually discriminated. However, the concentration of wounds on the posterior disc of females is consistent with the possible presence of olfactory cues (e.g. pheromones) that are released at the cloaca. The pectoral fin dermis of females was 50% thicker than that of males, which eliminated the excision of margins during male grasping and functions to reduce female injury. The temporal occurrence of wounds from October through June and peak in April is consistent with previous reproductive studies that show fresh sperm in the reproductive tract of females over the protracted mating period and also ovulation in late March or early April. The importance of social reproductive biting is discussed in relation to the reproductive induction hypothesis proposed to possibly explain the protracted mating of this species. Monitoring of dermal wounds provides a useful non-invasive technique to determine reproductive activity and a means for inference of social relationships in elasmobranch populations.

Reproductive behaviour of the catfish,Silurus asotus was studied in temporary waters around paddy fields. Spawning occurred nocturnally during the first week from the initiation of irrigation. In reproductive activities, a male first energetically pursued a female with its head near to the female’s belly (chasing) and then began to cling to the female’s body from the side, bending its tail or head (clinging). Finally the male enfolded the female’s body, with its anus near to the female’s (enfolding). In some cases, 2–4 males pursued a single female and two males enfolded a female at the same time. Although no aggressive behaviour was evident between males, it was always the largest male that could most frequently approach and enfold the female. The mating pair moved a long distance in a ditch, paddy field and/or creek, performing reproductive activities. It is thought that the spawning site and period of spawning of the fish enable the larvae to avoid the danger of predation and to efficiently feed, firstly on plankton and later on larvae of other fishes which become abundant during the irrigation period. Although some eggs and larvae may die due to the drying out or high water temperatures of such unstable temporary waters, scattering eggs may reduce the incidence of the annihilation of the young.

1. The breeding behaviour of the white-clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes, which is in decline throughout Europe, was analysed. 2. Observations and experiments focused on: (i) several aspects of mating behaviour, showing the primary role of the female during courtship, the patterns of mature male receptivity and the possible existence of a mating stimulus produced by either a mating pair or a receptive female; (ii) the potential for mate choice either by males (males were not choosy, mating with the first receptive female they met) or by females (that rejected the smallest males and males with only one cheliped) and (iii) intermale fighting before copulation (larger males copulated more often, with the exception of some ’sneakers‘). 3. Sperm competition occurred when a new male was presented with a female after a previous male‘s spermatophore had been deposited; the new male cleaned the rival male‘s spermatophore by feeding on it before copulation. This behaviour has also been observed in some pseudoscorpions, millipedes and collembolans, but always in cases where the spermatophore is deposited on the substratum.

Individual variability in the mating success of male Atlantic cod Gadus morhua was quantified within an aggregation ( n = 59) breeding undisturbed in a large (684 m3) mesocosm tank. Observational and morphometric data were examined to assess the degree to which this mating variation could be explained by aspects of morphology, condition and spawning behaviour. The number of ventral mounts initiated ( i.e. mating success) was highly variable; most mounts were initiated by a very small percentage of available males. The significant correlate of male mating success was mass of the sound producing musculature, i.e. drumming muscles. Neither body size, condition, pelvic and median fin morphology nor aggression influenced the number of ventral mounts initiated by a male. The present study suggests a possible link between sound production and mating success in Atlantic cod.

Abstract  The effects of domestication and irradiation on the mating behaviour of males of Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) (Diptera: Tephritidae) were investigated by caging wild, laboratory-domesticated and sterile (laboratory-domesticated, gamma-irradiated) males with wild females. Mating behaviour of mass-reared males was different from that of wild males, although behaviour of wild and sterile males was similar. Mass-reared males engaged in mounting of other males much more frequently than wild and sterile males, and began calling significantly earlier before darkness. Unnatural selection pressures imposed in mass-rearing conditions may explain these changes in mass-reared male behaviour. Male calling did not appear to be associated with female choice of mating partners, although this does not exclude the possibility that calling is a cue used by females to discriminate among mating partners. Despite differences in behaviour, frequency of successful copulations and mating success were similar among wild, mass-reared and sterile males.

Because multiple mating by females encourages sperm competition, the assessment of female mating status before insemination is important for males in order to avoid the risk of sperm competition or to intensify sperm competition. When interacting with females before sperm transfer, males can alter their mating tactics according to the risk or intensity of sperm competition. Information on how mating systems are associated with sperm competition is essential for sterile insect technique eradication programs, which depend on successful mating of released sterile males with wild females. We tested whether males of the West Indian sweetpotato weevil, Euscepes postfasciatus (Fairmaire) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), adjusted their mating behavior in response to female mating experience and/or age. As virgin/young female weevils accepted males more easily than non-virgin/old females, assessing females before insemination can be adaptive for male weevils. We found that E. postfasciatus males were unable to adjust their mating tactics in response to female mating status. Although this mating strategy would be costly for individual male weevils, the ability in males to discriminate female mating status can prevent the chance of mating with already-mated females containing the sperm of wild male(s). Therefore, the mating tactics of male E. postfasciatus are advantageous for sterile insect technique eradication programs.

Batoids (Chondrichthyes: Batoidea) are a diverse group of cartilaginous fishes which comprise a monophyletic sister lineage to all neoselachians or modern sharks. All species in this group possess anteroposteriorly expanded‐pectoral fins, giving them a unique disc‐like body form. Reliance on pectoral fins for propulsion ranges from minimal (sawfish) to almost complete dependence (skates and rays). A recent study on the diversity of planform pectoral fin shape in batoids compared overall patterns of morphological variation within the group. However, inconsistent pectoral homology prevented the study from accurately representing relationships within and among major batoid taxa. With previous work in mind, we undertook an independent investigation of pectoral form in batoids and evaluated the implications of shape diversity on locomotion and lifestyle, particularly in the skates (Rajoidei) and rays (Myliobatoidei). We used geometric morphometrics with sliding semilandmarks to analyze pectoral fin outlines and also calculate fin aspect ratios (AR), a functional trait linked to locomotion. In agreement with previous work, our results indicated that much of the evolution of batoid pectoral shape has occurred along a morphological axis that is closely related to AR. For species where kinematic data were available, both shape and AR were associated with swimming mode. This work further revealed novel patterns of shape variation among batoids, including strong bimodality of shape in rays, an intermediate location of skate species in the morphospace between benthic/demersal and pelagic rays, and approximately parallel shape trajectories in the benthic/demersal rays and skates. Finally, manipulation of landmarks verified the need for a consistent and accurate definition of homology for the outcome and efficacy of analyses of pectoral form and function in batoids. J. We examined male–male competition in guppies (Poecilia reticulata) to test for evidence of hierarchy formation and any subsequent effects on male mating success by comparing the interactions of pairs of males that were siblings and life‐long tank mates with those of unrelated pairs that had never met. These pairs of males were first observed in the absence of a female; then a female was added to gauge the effects of the initial male–male interactions on male sexual behaviour. The unfamiliar/unrelated pairs engaged in significantly more aggressive interactions such as physical contacts, nipping and chasing than the familiar/related pairs. Based on several previous studies, we suggest that familiarity played a greater role than relatedness in the differences in behaviour that we observed. Our results suggest that, in some circumstances, more aggressive males may have more mating opportunities than less aggressive males. Our results also indicate that males adjust their aggressive and courtship behaviours to the perceived intensity of competition for mates, based on the number of mature males in their rearing tanks. We suggest that male–male competition for mating opportunities may play a more important role in the guppy mating system than previously thought.

Research on the courtship and mating behavior of insects is the first step toward a full understanding of their behavioral ecology. Investigating mating behavioral sequences could help to unravel mate assessment and mate choice dynamics in entomophagous organisms, adding useful information to develop behavior-based control strategies. In this research, courtship and mating displays, magnitude of male-male sexual interactions and role of female-borne cues evoking male courtship were analyzed in Leucopis palumbii Rondani (Diptera: Chamaemyiidae), a larval predator of aphids. Courtship was initiated by the male and was characterized by three main steps: chasing of the female, wing fanning in her close proximity and tarsal tapping with forelegs on the female’s body. Copulation may follow lasting 765?±?211.25 s. Same-sex interactions among males (i.e. wing fanning followed by tarsal tapping) were also registered. Male fanning before a successful courtship differed from fanning performed prior to an unsuccessful approach in terms of mean frequency. Female-borne stimuli played a key role in eliciting courtship responses from males. The best male’s response was achieved when physical and chemical cues arising from the female body were contemporarily provided, allowing synergistic visual, olfactory and tactile perception. Results contribute to understanding the role of visual, olfactory and tactile channels among sensory modalities used by aphidophagous Chamaemyiidae during sexual communication.

Cloacae were examined from salamanders representing the three families in which fertilization of eggs is known or inferred to occur externally. The cloacae of male and female sirenids are aglandular and lack cilia. Sexual dimorphism in sirenid cloacae occurs only in the extent of epithelial stratification in the cloacal chamber in females (entire chamber) versus males (posterior angle of the vent). Both male and female Cryptobranchus alleganiensis possess ventral glands that secrete an acid mucopolysaccharide and have ciliated cloacal linings. The ventral glands are more numerous and hypertrophied in breeding male than female C. alleganiensis, but in males, ventral glands secrete only onto the surface of the cloacal lips along the anterior three-fifths of the cloacal orifice, whereas in females, the glands secrete onto the border of the entire cloacal orifice. Except for male Onychodactylus japonicus, male and female hynobiids also possess only ventral glands and have ciliated cloacal linings. Hynobiid ventral glands secrete a glycoprotein. Much variation occurs, however, among these hynobiids in cloacal conformation, extent of epidermis into the cloaca, and anatomy of the ventral gland. Male O. japonicus possess an unciliated cloaca in which three types of cloacal glands occur, each giving unique reactions to tests for carbohydrates and proteins. The glands in male O. japonicus do not seem to be homologous to those found in spermatophore producing salamanders in the Salamandroidea, but this does not negate the possibility that O. japonicus makes spermatophores. Examination of cloacal characters in additional species of hynobiids may be useful in resolving intrafamilial phylogenetic relationships.
