In this study, we introduce the fast wavelet transform (WT) as a method for investigating the effects of morphine on the electroencephalogram (EEG), respiratory activity and blood pressure in fetal lambs. Morphine was infused intravenously at 25 mg/h. The EEG, respiratory activity and blood pressure signals were analyzed using WT. We performed wavelet decomposition for five sets of parameters D 2j where -1 < j 5. The five series WTs represent the detail signal bandwidths: 1, 16–32 Hz; 2, 8–16 Hz; 3, 4–8 Hz; 4, 2–4 Hz; 5, 1–2 Hz. Before injection of the high-dose morphine, power in the EEG was high in all six frequency bandwidths. The respiratory and blood pressure signals showed common frequency components with respect to time and were coincident with the low-voltage fast activity (LVFA) EEG signal. Respiratory activity was observed during only some of the LVFA periods, and was completely absent during high-voltage slow activity (HVSA) EEG. The respiratory signal showed dominant power in the fourth wavelet band, and less power in the third and fifth bands. The blood pressure signal was also characterized by dominant power in the fourth wavelet band. This power was significantly increased during periods of respiratory activity. There was a strong relationship between fetal EEG, blood pressure and breathing movements. However, the injection of high-dose morphine resulted in a disruption of the normal cyclic pattern between the two EEG states and a significant increase in power in the first wavelet band. In addition, the high-dose drug resulted in a significant increase in the power of respiratory signal in the fourth and fifth wavelet bands, while power was reduced in the third wavelet band. Breathing activity was also continuous after the drug. The high-dose morphine also caused a temporary power shift from the third wavelet band to the fourth wavelet band for the 30-min period after injection of drug. Finally, high-dose morphine completely destroyed the correlation between EEG, breathing and blood pressure signals.  相似文献

Electroencephalographic (EEG) arousals are seen in EEG recordings as an awakening response of the human brain. Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder. Severe sleep apnea brings about EEG arousals and sleep for patients with sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is thus frequently interrupted. The number of respiratory-related arousals during the whole night on PSG recordings is directly related to the quality of sleep. Detecting EEG arousals in the PSG record is thus a significant task for clinical diagnosis in sleep medicine. In this paper, a method for automatic detection of EEG arousals in SAS patients was proposed. To effectively detect respiratory-related arousals, threshold values were determined according to pathological events as sleep apnea and electromyogram (EMG). If resumption of ventilation (end of the apnea interval) was detected, much lower thresholds were adopted for detecting EEG arousals, including relatively doubtful arousals. Conversely, threshold was maintained high when pathological events were undetected. The proposed method was applied to polysomnographic (PSG) records of eight patients with SAS and accuracy of EEG arousal detection was verified by comparative visual inspection. Effectiveness of the proposed method in clinical diagnosis was also investigated.  相似文献

Objective

To characterize parasomnia behaviors on arousal from NREM sleep in Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and Multiple System Atrophy (MSA).

Methods

From 30 patients with PD, Dementia with Lewy Bodies/Dementia associated with PD, or MSA undergoing nocturnal video-polysomnography for presumed dream enactment behavior, we were able to select 2 PD and 2 MSA patients featuring NREM Parasomnia Behviors (NPBs). We identified episodes during which the subjects seemed to enact dreams or presumed dream-like mentation (NPB arousals) versus episodes with physiological movements (no-NPB arousals). A time-frequency analysis (Morlet Wavelet Transform) of the scalp EEG signals around each NPB and no- NPB arousal onset was performed, and the amplitudes of the spectral frequencies were compared between NPB and no-NPB arousals.

Results

19 NPBs were identified, 12 of which consisting of ‘elementary’ NPBs while 7 resembling confusional arousals. With quantitative EEG analysis, we found an amplitude reduction in the 5-6 Hz band 40 seconds before NPBs arousal as compared to no-NPB arousals at F4 and C4 derivations (p<0.01).

Conclusions

Many PD and MSA patients feature various NREM sleep-related behaviors, with clinical and electrophysiological differences and similarities with arousal parasomnias in the general population.

Significance

This study help bring to attention an overlooked phenomenon in neurodegenerative diseases.  相似文献

McNamara, Frances, Faiq G. Issa, and Colin E. Sullivan.Arousal pattern following central and obstructive breathing abnormalities in infants and children. J. Appl.Physiol. 81(6): 2651-2657, 1996.We analyzed thepolysomnographic records of 15 children and 20 infants with obstructivesleep apnea (OSA) to examine the interaction between central andobstructive breathing abnormalities and arousal from sleep. Eachpatient was matched for age with an infant or child who had no OSA. Wefound that the majority of respiratory events in infants and childrenwas not terminated with arousal. In children, arousals terminated 39.3 ± 7.2% of respiratory events during quiet sleep and 37.8 ± 7.2% of events during active (rapid-eye-movement) sleep. In infants, arousals terminated 7.9 ± 1.0% of events during quiet sleep and7.9 ± 1.2% of events during active sleep. In both infants andchildren, however, respiratory-related arousals occurred more frequently after obstructive apneas and hypopneas than after central events. Spontaneous arousals occurred in all patients with OSA duringquiet and active sleep. The frequency of spontaneous arousals was notdifferent between children with OSA and their matched controls. Duringactive sleep, however, infants with OSA had significantly fewerspontaneous arousals than did control infants. We conclude that arousalis not an important mechanism in the termination of respiratory eventsin infants and children and that electroencephalographic criteria arenot essential to determine the clinical severity of OSA in thepediatric population.

Electrocortical arousal (ECA) as an effect of visceral provocation or of its temporal relationships with aerodigestive reflexes in premature neonates is not known. We tested the hypothesis that esophageal provocation results in both esophageal reflex responses and ECAs during sleep and that ECAs are dependent on the frequency characteristics of esophageal neuromotor responses. We defined the spatiotemporal relationship of ECAs in relation to 1) spontaneous pharyngoesophageal swallow sequences and gastroesophageal reflux (GER) events and 2) sensory-motor characteristics of esophageal reflexes. Sixteen healthy premature neonates born at 27.9 ± 3.4 wk were tested at 36.8 ± 1.9 wk postmenstrual age. Ninety-five midesophageal and 31 sham stimuli were given in sleep during concurrent manometry and videopolysomnography. With stimulus onset as reference point, we scored the response latency, frequency occurrence and duration of arousals, peristaltic reflex, and upper esophageal sphincter contractile reflex (UESCR). Changes in polysomnography-respiratory patterns and esophageal sensory-motor parameters were scored by blinded observers. Significantly (for each characteristic listed, P < 0.05), swallow sequences were associated with arousals and sleep state changes, and arousals were associated with incomplete peristalsis, response delays to lower esophageal sphincter relaxation, and prolonged esophageal clearance. GER events (73.5%) provoked arousals, and arousals were associated with response delays to peristaltic reflexes or clearance, sleep state modification, and prolonged respiratory arousal. Midesophageal stimuli (54%) provoked arousals and were associated with increased frequency, prolonged latency, prolonged response duration of peristaltic reflexes and UESCR, and increased frequency of sleep state changes and respiratory arousals. In human neonates, ECAs are provoked upon esophageal stimulation; the sensory-motor characteristics of esophageal reflexes are distinct when accompanied by arousals. Aerodigestive homeostasis is defended by multiple tiers of aerodigestive safety mechanisms, and when esophageal reflexes are delayed, cortical hypervigilance (ECAs) occurs.  相似文献

Apnea and arousal are modulated with sleep stage, and swallowing may interfere with respiratory rhythm in infants. We hypothesized that swallowing itself would display interaction with sleep state. Concurrent polysomnography and measurement of swallowing allowed time-matched analysis of 3,092 swallows, 482 apneas, and 771 arousals in 17 infants aged 1-34 wk. The mean rates of swallowing, apnea, and arousal were significantly different, being 23.3 +/- 8.5, 9.4 +/- 8.8, and 15.5 +/- 10.6 h(-1), respectively (P < 0.001 ANOVA). Swallows occurred before 25.2 +/- 7.9% and during 74.8 +/- 6.3% of apneas and before 39.8 +/- 6.0% and during 60.2 +/- 6.0% of arousals. The frequencies of apneas and arousals were both strongly influenced by sleep state (active sleep > indeterminate > quiet sleep, P < 0.001), whether or not the events coincided with swallowing, but swallowing rate showed minimal independent interaction with sleep state. Interactions between swallowing and sleep state were predominantly influenced by the coincidence of swallowing with apnea or arousal.  相似文献

For temperate endotherms (i.e., mammals and birds) energy costs are highest during winter but food availability is lowest and many mammals depend on hibernation as a result. Hibernation is made up of energy-saving torpor bouts [periods of controlled reduction in body temperature (T b)], which are interrupted by brief periodic arousals to normothermic T b. What triggers these arousals in free-ranging hibernators is not well understood. Some temperate bats with intermittent access to flying insects during winter synchronize arousals with sunset, which suggests that, in some species, feeding opportunities influence arousal timing. We tested whether hibernating bats from a cold climate without access to food during winter also maintain a circadian rhythm for arousals or whether cues from conspecifics in the same cluster are more important. We used temperature telemetry to monitor skin temperature (T sk) of free-ranging little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) hibernating in central Manitoba, Canada, where temperatures from 22 October to 22 March were too cold for flying insects. We found no evidence bats synchronized arousals with photoperiod but they did arouse synchronously with other bats in the same cluster. Thus, in the northern part of their range where flying insects are almost never available during winter, little brown bats exhibit no circadian pattern to arousals. Warming synchronously with others could reduce the energetic costs of arousal for individuals or could reflect disturbance of torpid bats by cluster-mates.  相似文献

Background

Progestins as respiratory stimulants in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been investigated in males and during wakefulness. However, sleep and gender may influence therapeutic responses. We investigated the effects of a 2-week medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) therapy on sleep and nocturnal breathing in postmenopausal women.

Methods

A single-blind placebo-controlled trial was performed in 15 postmenopausal women with moderate to severe COPD. A 12-week trial included 2-week treatment periods with placebo and MPA (60 mg/d/14 days). All patients underwent a polysomnography with monitoring of SaO2 and transcutaneous PCO2 (tcCO2) at baseline, with placebo, with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA 60 mg/d/14 days), and three and six weeks after cessation of MPA.

Results

Thirteen patients completed the trial. At baseline, the average ± SD of SaO2 mean was 90.6 ± 3.2 % and the median of SaO2 nadir 84.8 % (interquartile range, IQR 6.1). MPA improved them by 1.7 ± 1.6 %-units (95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.56, 2.8) and by 3.9 %-units (IQR 4.9; 95% CI 0.24, 10.2), respectively. The average of tcCO2 median was 6.0 ± 0.9 kPa and decreased with MPA by 0.9 ± 0.5 kPa (95% CI -1.3, -0.54). MPA improved SaO2 nadir and tcCO2 median also during REM sleep. Three weeks after cessation of MPA, the SaO2 mean remained 1.4 ± 1.8 %-units higher than at baseline, the difference being not significant (95% CI -0.03, 2.8). SaO2 nadir was 2.7 %-units (IQR 4.9; 95% CI 0.06, 18.7) higher than at baseline. Increases in SaO2 mean and SaO2 nadir during sleep with MPA were inversely associated with baseline SaO2 mean (r = -0.70, p = 0.032) and baseline SaO2 nadir (r = -0.77, p = 0.008), respectively. Treatment response in SaO2 mean, SaO2 nadir and tcCO2 levels did not associate with pack-years smoked, age, BMI, spirometric results or sleep variables.

Conclusion

MPA-induced respiratory improvement in postmenopausal women seems to be consistent and prolonged. The improvement was greater in patients with lower baseline SaO2 values. Long-term studies in females are warranted.  相似文献

Arctic ground squirrels overwintering in northern Alaska experience average soil temperature of −10°C. To examine energetic costs of arousing from hibernation under arctic compared to temperate conditions, captive ground squirrels were maintained in ambient temperatures (T a) of 2, −5 and −12°C. Rates of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production were used to estimate metabolic rate and fuel use during the three phases of arousal episodes: rewarming, euthermia, and recooling. Respiratory quotient comparisons suggest exclusive use of lipid during rewarming and mixed fuel use during euthermia. Animals rewarming from torpor at T a −12°C took longer, consumed more oxygen, and attained higher peak rates of oxygen consumption when compared to 2°C. T a had no significant effect on cost or duration of the euthermic phase. Animals recooled faster at −12°C than at 2°C, but total oxygen consumption was not different. T a had no significant effect on the total cost of arousal episodes when all three phases are included. Arousal episodes account for 86% of estimated costs of a complete hibernation cycle including torpor when at 2°C and only 23% at −12°C. Thus, due to the higher costs of steady-state metabolism during torpor, proportional metabolic costs of arousal episodes at T a characteristic of the Arctic are diminished compared to relative costs of arousals in more temperate conditions.  相似文献

Introduction

Using a novel method called near-infrared transillumination backscattering sounding (NIR-T/BSS) that allows for the non-invasive measurement of pial artery pulsation (cc-TQ) and subarachnoid width (sas-TQ) in humans, we assessed the influence of sympathetic activation on the cardiac and respiratory contribution to blood pressure (BP) cc-TQ oscillations in healthy subjects.

Methods

The pial artery and subarachnoid width response to handgrip (HGT) and cold test (CT) were studied in 20 healthy subjects. The cc-TQ and sas-TQ were measured using NIR-T/BSS; cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) was measured using Doppler ultrasound of the left internal carotid artery; heart rate (HR) and beat-to-beat mean BP were recorded using a continuous finger-pulse photoplethysmography; respiratory rate (RR), minute ventilation (MV), end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2) and end-tidal O2 (EtO2) were measured using a metabolic and spirometry module of the medical monitoring system. Wavelet transform analysis was used to assess the relationship between BP and cc-TQ oscillations.

Results

HGT evoked an increase in BP (+15.9%; P<0.001), HR (14.7; P<0.001), SaO2 (+0.5; P<0.001) EtO2 (+2.1; P<0.05) RR (+9.2%; P = 0.05) and MV (+15.5%; P<0.001), while sas-TQ was diminished (-8.12%; P<0.001), and a clear trend toward cc-TQ decline was observed (-11.0%; NS). CBFV (+2.9%; NS) and EtCO2 (-0.7; NS) did not change during HGT. CT evoked an increase in BP (+7.4%; P<0.001), sas-TQ (+3.5%; P<0.05) and SaO2(+0.3%; P<0.05). HR (+2.3%; NS), CBFV (+2.0%; NS), EtO2 (-0.7%; NS) and EtCO2 (+0.9%; NS) remained unchanged. A trend toward decreased cc-TQ was observed (-5.1%; NS). The sas-TQ response was biphasic with elevation during the first 40 seconds (+8.8% vs. baseline; P<0.001) and subsequent decline (+4.1% vs. baseline; P<0.05). No change with respect to wavelet coherence and wavelet phase coherence was found between the BP and cc-TQ oscillations.

Conclusions

Short sympathetic activation does not affect the cardiac and respiratory contribution to the relationship between BP—cc-TQ oscillations. HGT and CT display divergent effects on the width of the subarachnoid space, an indirect marker of changes in intracranial pressure.  相似文献

Mammals and birds have evolved the ability to maintain a high and constant body temperature Tb over a wide range of ambient temperatures Ta using endogenous heat production. In many, especially small endotherms, cost for thermoregulatory heat production can exceed available energy; to overcome these energetic bottlenecks, they enter a state of torpor (a regulated reduction of Tb and metabolic rate). Since the occurrence of torpor in many species is a seasonal event and occurs at certain times of the day, we review whether circadian and circannual rhythms, important in the timing of biological events in active animals, also play an important role during torpor when Tb is reduced substantially and may even fall below 0°C. The two distinct patterns of torpor, hibernation (prolonged torpor) and daily torpor, differ substantially in their interaction with the circadian system. Daily torpor appears to be integrated into the normal circadian rhythm of activity and rest, although torpor is not restricted only to the normal rest phase of an animal. In contrast, hibernation can last for several days or even weeks, although torpor never spans the entire hibernation season, but is interrupted by periodic arousals and brief normothermic periods. Clearly, a day is no longer divided in activity and rest, and at first glance the role of the circadian system appears negligible. However, in several hibernators, arousals not only follow a regular pattern consistent with a circadian rhythm, but also are entrainable by external stimuli such as photoperiod and Ta. The extent of the interaction between the circadian and circannual system and hibernation varies among species. Biological rhythms of hibernators for which food availability appears to be predictable seasonally and that hibernate in deep and sealed burrows show little sensitivity to external stimuli during hibernation and hence little entrainability of arousal events. In contrast, opportunistic hibernators, which some times use arousals for foraging and hibernate in open and accessible hibernacula, are susceptible to external zeitgebers. In opportunistic hibernators, the circadian system plays a major role in maintaining synchrony between the normal day-night cycle and occasional foraging. Although the daily routine of activity and rest is abandoned during hibernation, the circadian system appears to remain functional, and there is little evidence it is significantly affected by low Tb. Arousal from sleep is associated with elevated cardiac and respiratory activity. It is unclear whether this occurs because of homeostatic mechanisms or a reflex activation response associated with arousal. Cardiorespiratory activity was measured during spontaneous arousals from sleep in subjects breathing passively on a ventilator. Under such conditions, homeostatic mechanisms are eliminated. Ventilation, end-tidal PCO2, mask pressure, diaphragmatic electromyograph, heart rate, and blood pressure were measured in four normal subjects under two conditions: assisted ventilation and a normal ventilation control condition. In the control condition, there was a normal, sleep-related fall in ventilation and rise in end-tidal PCO2. Subsequently, at an arousal, there was an increase in respiratory and cardiac activity. In the ventilator condition, a vigorous cardiorespiratory response to a spontaneous arousal from sleep remained. These results indicate that sleep-related respiratory stimuli are not necessary for the occurrence of elevated cardiorespiratory activity at an arousal from sleep and are consistent with the hypothesis that such activity is at least in part due to a reflex activation response.  相似文献

The oxygen saturation (StO2) and total hemoglobin volume in cutaneous blood are closely related to cutaneous metabolism and are important factors in determining the skin color. Most conventional apparatuses for the measurement of cutaneous metabolism have been designed to evaluate qualitative changes in the oxyhemoglobin volume, deoxyhemoglobin volume, and their sum (total Hb volume) relative to their baseline values. In this study, we developed an instrument for non-invasive evaluation of individual and regional differences in StO2 and Hb volume, a system unaffected by melanin (Kao PSA system model III), and examined the validity of its application. First, changes in StO2 and total Hb volume in the antebrachial region during venous occlusion and devascularization by compression of the brachial region were evaluated. Changes in total Hb volume following venous occlusion were found to reflect the cutaneous blood flow. Also, StO2 was considered to reflect the state of oxygen consumption by the skin, because it was markedly reduced during devascularization. Next, the subjects were exposed to graded hypobaric conditions, and the relationships among StO2, arterial blood oxygen saturation (SaO2), and venous blood oxygen saturation (SvO2) were studied. StO2 showed significant positive correlations with SaO2 (r=0.811, P<0.001) and SvO2 (r=0.966, P<0.001), and its correlation with SvO2 was particularly strong. Therefore, StO2 was found to be closely dependent on SvO2. Lastly, StO2, total Hb volume, and other parameters were measured in healthy women (aged 20–69 years), and their regional differences and age- associated changes were evaluated. These regional differences (angle of mouth > cheek > forehead) and age-associated decreases in StO2 are considered to be caused by the age-associated decreases in the cutaneous blood flow. The study was performed with participation of 59 right-handed men. The normal group consisted of 19 subjects, and 40 patients with organic brain lesions who had commited sexual offenses were divided into two groups: 19 patients with a diagnosis of paraphilia (pathology of sexual drive) made up the main test group, and 21 patients without such a diagnosis formed the control group. A monopolar EEG was recorded in 16 standard leads in the states of rest (eyes closed) and general activation (eyes open) and during presentation of cognitive tests. The following EEG features manifest in all the frequency ranges and functional states were revealed in the group of patients with paraphilias as compared to the control groups: a substantially increased level of interhemispheric coherence (ICoh) and increased spectral density in the posterotemporal area (T 5, T 6), a significantly decreased ICoh level between the F 3/4 and C 3/4 leads in the frontocentral area, and lower spectral densities in the leads Fp 2, C 4, and P 4. Analysis of reactions to loads presented showed that the general arousal in the group of patients with paraphilias was characterized by significantly greater shifts of EEG parameters associated with the desynchronization reaction (as compared to the control groups) and statistically significant disorders of interhemispheric interaction and EEG reactivity in the right hemisphere in the range during performance of a visuospatial (right-hemispheric) task. The results suggest the formation of a stationary activation focus in the right hemisphere with signs of involvement of the limbic structures in patients with paraphilias.  相似文献

Respiratory cycle related EEG change (RCREC) is characterized by significant relative EEG power changes within different stages of respiration during sleep. RCREC has been demonstrated to predict sleepiness in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea and is hypothesized to represent microarousals. As such RCREC may provide a sensitive marker of respiratory arousals. A key step in quantification of RCREC is respiratory signal segmentation which is conventionally based on local maxima and minima of the nasal flow signal. We have investigated an alternative respiratory cycle segmentation method based on inspiratory/expiratory transitions. Sixty two healthy paediatric participants were recruited through staff of local universities in Bolivia. Subjects underwent attended polysomnography on a single night (Compumedics PS2 system). Studies were sleep staged according to standard criteria. C3/A2 EEG channel and time-locked nasal flow (thermistor) were used in RCREC quantification. Forty Seven subjects aged 7–17 (11.4 ± 3) years (24M:23F) were found to have usable polysomnographs for the purpose of RCREC calculation. Respiratory cycles were segmented using both the conventional and novel (transition) methods and differences in RCREC derived from the two methods were compared in each frequency band. Significance of transition RCREC as measured by Fisher's F value through analysis of variance (ANOVA) was found to be significantly higher than the conventional RCREC in all frequency bands (P < 0.05) but beta. This increase in statistical significance of RCREC as demonstrated with the novel transition segmentation approach suggests better alignment of the respiratory cycle segments with the underlying physiology driving RCREC.  相似文献

Summary Hibernation patterns, body temperature (T b) and oxygen consumption ( ) were measured during hibernation in two hedgehog species, a desert speciesHemiechinus auritus (body mass 367 g) and a temperate habitat speciesErinaceus europaeus (body mass 598 g). A continuous ambient temperature of 11 °C was the only necessary condition for both species to enter hibernation outdoors and in the laboratory. At this temperature, hibernation could be induced at any time of the year. Hibernation bouts ofHemiechinus were regular and short (average 4.8 days), whereas those ofErinaceus lasted 5 to 27 days (average 9.3 days). The frequency of spontaneous arousals was 5.3 and 2.9 per month forHemiechinus andErinaceus, respectively. None of the hedgehogs took any food during arousal periods. Both species had the sameT b during hibernation (12.5 °C) and during arousal (33 °C). of the hibernatingHemiechinus was twice the rate ofErinaceus (0.050 vs. 0.025 ml g–1 h–1), but during arousal it was the same for both. The monthly average energy expenditure for both species was 1,477 kJ per animal, which is 15% of the energy used by non-hibernating hedgehogs. The corresponding amount of fat catabolized was 37 g per month. This mass loss would limit the hibernation inHemiechinus to 3.9 months and inErinaceus to 6.5 months. Although hibernation inHemiechinus does not constitute a special adaptation to hot environments, it significantly improves the hedgehog's energy economy during the desert winter.  相似文献

The frequency and function of arousals during hibernation in free-living mammals are little known. We used temperature-sensitive radio transmitters to measure patterns of torpor, arousal and activity in wild Natterer’s bats Myotis nattereri during hibernation. Duration of torpor bouts ranged from 0.06 to 20.4 days with individual means ranging from 0.9 to 8.9 days. Arousals from torpor occurred most commonly coincident with the time (relative to sunset) typical for bats emerging from summer roosts to forage. Bats with lower body condition indices had a shorter average duration of their torpor bouts. We found a non-linear relationship between duration of torpor bout and ambient temperature: the longest average torpor bouts were at temperatures between 2 and 4°C with shorter bouts at lower and higher ambient temperatures. One individual was radio-tracked for ten nights, remained active for an average of 297 min each night and was active for longer on warmer nights. Our results suggest that vespertilionid bats use relatively short torpor bouts during hibernation in a location with a maritime climate. We hypothesise that Natterer’s bats time arousals to maximise opportunities for potential foraging during winter although winter feeding is not the sole determinant of arousal as bats still arouse at times when foraging is unlikely.  相似文献

Body temperature (T b) of seven European hamsters maintained at constant ambient temperature (T a = 8 °C) and constant photoperiod (LD 8:16) was recorded throughout the hibernating season using intraperitoneal temperature-sensitive HF transmitters. The animals spent about 30% of the hibernation season in hypothermia and 70% in inter-bout normothermy. Three types of hypothermia, namely deep hibernation bouts (DHBs), short hibernation bouts (SHBs), and short and shallow hibernation bouts (SSHBs), were distinguished by differences in bout duration and minimal body temperature (T m). A gradual development of SSHBs from the diel minimum of T b during normothermy could be seen in individual hamsters, suggesting a stepwise decrease of the homeostatic setpoint of T b regulation during the early hibernation season. Entry into hibernation followed a 24-h rhythm occurring at preferred times of the day in all three types of hypothermia. DHBs and SHBs were initiated approximately 4 h before SSHBs, indicating a general difference in the physiological initiation of SSHBs on the one hand and DHBs and SHBs on the other. Arousals from SHBs and SSHBs also followed a 24-h rhythm, whereas spontaneous arousals from DHBs were widely scattered across day and night. Statistical analyses of bout length and the interval between arousals revealed evidence for a free-running circadian rhythm underlying the timing of arousals. The results clearly demonstrate that entries into hypothermia are linked to the light/dark-cycle. However, the role of the circadian system in the timing of arousals from DHBs remains unclear. Our aim was to evaluate cardiac changes evoked by spontaneous and sound-induced arousals from sleep. Cardiac responses to spontaneous and auditory-induced arousals were recorded during overnight sleep studies in 28 young healthy subjects (14 males, 14 females) during non-rapid eye movement sleep. Computerized analysis was applied to assess beat-to-beat changes in heart rate, atrio-ventricular conductance, and ventricular repolarization from 30 s before to 60 s after the auditory tone. During both types of arousals, the most consistent change was the increase in the heart rate (in 62% of spontaneous and in 89% of sound-induced arousals). This was accompanied by an increase or no change in PR interval and by a decrease or no change in QT interval. The magnitude of all cardiac changes was significantly higher for tone-induced vs. spontaneous arousals (mean +/- SD for heart rate: +9 +/- 8 vs. +13 +/- 9 beats per min; for PR prolongation: 14 +/- 16 vs. 24 +/- 22 ms; for QT shortening: -12 +/- 6 vs. -20 +/- 9 ms). The prevalence of transient tachycardia and PR prolongation was also significantly higher for tone-induced vs. spontaneous arousals (tachycardia: 85% vs. 57% of arousals, P < 0.001; PR prolongation: 51% vs. 25% of arousals, P < 0.001). All cardiac responses were short-lasting (10-15 s). We conclude that cardiac pacemaker region, conducting system, and ventricular myocardium may be under independent neural control. Prolongation of atrio-ventricular delay may serve to increase ventricular filling during arousal from sleep. Whether prolonged atrio-ventricular conductance associated with increased sympathetic outflow to the ventricular myocardium contributes to arrhythmogenesis during sudden arousal from sleep remains to be evaluated.  相似文献
