Circadian rhythms have been observed in most mammals, but their importance and function remain controversial with respect to daily cycles during hibernation. We investigated the timing of arousals from and entries into hibernation for both free-living and captive mountain pygmy-possums (Burramys parvus). Under both natural and laboratory conditions most arousals and entries were entrained with the light-dark cycle. Entries occurred mainly during the night and arousals preferably around dusk, which coincides with the onset of the normal activity phase for the nocturnal pygmy-possums. This entrainment prevailed throughout the hibernation season although only the laboratory animals were constantly subjected to photoperiodic stimuli, whereas under natural conditions hibernacula are shielded from photic cues and diurnal temperature fluctuations. Nevertheless, possums left their hibernacula frequently throughout winter and were occasionally trapped close to the snow surface suggesting that during the periods of post-arousal normothermia they can be exposed to environmental stimuli. It thus appears that the synchronisation with the photocycle was governed by a temperature-compensated circadian clock which was reset periodically during short activity periods. For the mountain pygmy-possum, entrainment with the photocycle probably has two functions: 1. Entrainment ensures that foraging bouts during the hibernation season remain synchronised with the dark phase. 2. Information about the prevailing climatic conditions sampled during short activity periods enables them to time final spring emergence from hibernation when snow melt begins and ensures that the breeding season can commence as early as possible. c-fos induction was investigated as a potential component in the avian photic entrainment pathway and as a possible means of locating the central pacemaker in birds. In both quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) and starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) exposure to 1 h of light induced Fos-lir in the visual suprachiasmatic nucleus but not in the medial suprachiasmatic nucleus. However, the degree of c-fos induction in the visual suprachiasmatic nucleus was similar at different circadian times despite the fact that the light pulses caused differential phase shifts in the locomotor rhythm. For golden hamsters the same experiment resulted in significantly different levels of Fos-lir in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, as well as different phase shifts. Starlings and hamsters were also entrained to T-cycles that caused a large daily phase shift (T = 21.5 h in starlings, T = 22.67 hours in hamsters), or no daily phase shift (T = free running period). No difference in the induced levels of Fos-lir in the visual suprachiasmatic nucleus region was observed between the two groups of starlings, but in hamsters there were significantly different levels of Fos-lir in the suprachiasmatic nucleus between the two groups. The jerboa (Jaculus orientalis) has been described in the past as a hibernator, but no reliable data exist on the daily and seasonal rhythmicity of body temperature (T b). In this study, T b patterns were determined in different groups of jerboas (isolated males and females, castrated males and grouped animals) maintained in captivity during autumn and winter, and submitted to natural variations of light and ambient temperature (T a). T b and T a variations were recorded with surgically implanted iButton temperature loggers at 30-min intervals for two consecutive years. About half (6/13) of isolated female jerboas hibernated with a T b < 33°C, with hibernation bouts interspersed with short periods of normothermy from November to February. Hibernation bout durations were longer (4–5 days) than those of normothermia phases (1–4 days). During hibernation, the minimum T b was low (T bmin ~10.7°C). In contrast, one of the 12 isolated males showed short hibernation bouts of ca. 2 days late in the hibernation season, February–March. The males had T bmin values of 15.1°C. In contrast to predictions, no castrated males hibernated. When jerboas were grouped, females and males exhibited concomitant torpor bouts. In males, the longest bouts were observed during the late hibernation season. These data suggest complex regulation of hibernation in jerboas.  相似文献

Mammals and birds have evolved the ability to maintain a high and constant body temperature Tb over a wide range of ambient temperatures Ta using endogenous heat production. In many, especially small endotherms, cost for thermoregulatory heat production can exceed available energy; to overcome these energetic bottlenecks, they enter a state of torpor (a regulated reduction of Tb and metabolic rate). Since the occurrence of torpor in many species is a seasonal event and occurs at certain times of the day, we review whether circadian and circannual rhythms, important in the timing of biological events in active animals, also play an important role during torpor when Tb is reduced substantially and may even fall below 0°C. The two distinct patterns of torpor, hibernation (prolonged torpor) and daily torpor, differ substantially in their interaction with the circadian system. Daily torpor appears to be integrated into the normal circadian rhythm of activity and rest, although torpor is not restricted only to the normal rest phase of an animal. In contrast, hibernation can last for several days or even weeks, although torpor never spans the entire hibernation season, but is interrupted by periodic arousals and brief normothermic periods. Clearly, a day is no longer divided in activity and rest, and at first glance the role of the circadian system appears negligible. However, in several hibernators, arousals not only follow a regular pattern consistent with a circadian rhythm, but also are entrainable by external stimuli such as photoperiod and Ta. The extent of the interaction between the circadian and circannual system and hibernation varies among species. Biological rhythms of hibernators for which food availability appears to be predictable seasonally and that hibernate in deep and sealed burrows show little sensitivity to external stimuli during hibernation and hence little entrainability of arousal events. In contrast, opportunistic hibernators, which some times use arousals for foraging and hibernate in open and accessible hibernacula, are susceptible to external zeitgebers. In opportunistic hibernators, the circadian system plays a major role in maintaining synchrony between the normal day-night cycle and occasional foraging. Although the daily routine of activity and rest is abandoned during hibernation, the circadian system appears to remain functional, and there is little evidence it is significantly affected by low Tb. Body temperature of five European hamsters exposed to semi-natural environmental conditions at 47° N in Southern Germany was recorded over a 1.5-year period using intraperitoneal temperature-sensitive radio transmitters. The animals showed pronounced seasonal changes in body weight and reproductive status. Euthermic body temperature changed significantly throughout the year reaching its maximum of 37.9±0.2°C in April and its minimum of 36.1±0.4°C in December. Between November and March the hamsters showed regular bouts of hibernation and a few bouts of shallow torpor. During hibernation body temperature correlated with ambient temperature. Monthly means of body temperature during hibernation were highest in November (7.9±0.8°C) and March (8.2±0.5°C) and lowest in January (4.4±0.7°C). Using periodogram analysis methods, a clear diurnal rhythm of euthermic body temperature could be detected between March and August, whereas no such rhythm could be found during fall and winter. During hibernation bouts, no circadian rhythmicity was evident for body temperature apart from body temperature following ambient temperature with a time lag of 3–5 h. On average, hibernation bouts lasted 104.2±23.8 h with body temperature falling to 6.0±1.7°C. When entering hibernation the animals cooled at a rate of -0.8±0.2°C·h-1; when arousing from hibernation they warmed at a rate of 9.9±2.4°C·h-1. Warming rates were significantly lower in November and December than in January and February, and correlated with ambient temperature (r=-0.46, P<0.01) and hibernating body temperature (r=-0.47, P<0.01). Entry into hibrnation occured mostly in the middle of the night (mean time of day 0148 hours ±3.4 h), while spontaneous arousals were widely scattered across day and night. For all animals regression analysis revealed free-running circadian rhythms for the timing of arousal. These results suggest that entry into hibernation is either induced by environmental effects or by a circadian clock with a period of 24 h, whereas arousal from hibernation is controlled by an endogenous rhythm with a period different from 24 h.Abbreviations bw body weight - CET central European time - T a ambient temperature - T b body temperature - TTL transistor-transistor logic  相似文献

Three major forms of dormancy in mammals have been classified: hibernation in endotherms is characterised by reduced metabolic rate (MR) and body temperature (T b) near ambient temperature (T a) over prolonged times in the winter. Estivation is a similar form of dormancy in a dry and hot environment during summertime. Daily torpor is defined as reduced MR and T b lower than 32 °C, limited to a duration of less than 24 h. The edible dormouse (Glis glis) is capable for all three distinct forms of dormancy. During periods of food restriction and/or low T a, daily torpor is displayed throughout the year, alternating with hibernation and estivation in winter and summer respectively. We recorded T b, O2-consumption and CO2-production in unrestrained dormice at different T a's for periods of up to several months. Cooling rate and rate of metabolic depression during entrance into the torpid state was identical in all three forms of dormancy. The same was true for thermal conductance, maximum heat production, duration of arousal and cost of an arousal. The only difference between hibernation and daily torpor was found in the bout duration. A daily torpor bout lasted 3–21 h, a hibernation bout 39–768 h. As a consequence of prolonged duration, MR, T b and also the T b − T a gradient decreased to lower values during hibernation bouts when compared to daily torpor bouts. Our findings suggest that all three forms of dormancy are based on the same physiological mechanism of thermal and metabolic regulation. Accepted: 27 June 2000  相似文献

The hibernating marsupial mountain pygmy-possum (Burramys parvus, 40 g) has to raise its slow-growing offspring during a short alpine summer. Only females provide parental care, while after mating males emigrate to marginal habitats often at lower altitudes which can sustain only low possum densities. We predicted that the hibernation strategies in mountain pygmy-possums are distinct from those of similar-sized placental hibernators, because of the developmental constraints in marsupials and because hibernation differs between the sexes. Using temperature-sensitive radio transmitters, we studied the hibernation patterns of free-living male and female mountain pygmy-possums living in a north- and a south-facing boulder field (Kosciusko National Park) for two consecutive winters. Individual possums commenced hibernation several months before the snow season. As in other hibernators, torpor in the mountain pygmy-possum was interrupted by periodic arousals which occurred most often during the late afternoon. Torpor bouts initially lasted a few days when the hibernacula temperature (T hib) ranged from 4 to 7°C. As the hibernation season progressed, torpor bouts became longer and possum body temperatures (T b) approached 2°C. The T bs of females were significantly lower and torpor bouts were longer in the second half of the hibernation season than in males. Between torpor bouts, both sexes were often active and left hibernacula for periods of up to 5 days. Especially during the first months of the hibernation season, possums also frequently changed hibernacula sites probably in an attempt to select a site with a more suitable microclimate. Emergence from hibernation was closely coupled with the disappearance of snow from the possum habitat (September 1995, October 1996) and the limited fat stores probably dictate an opportunistic spring emergence. However, in 1995, spring was early and males emerged significantly earlier than females. In 1996, when snow melt was delayed, this difference vanished. Testes are regressed in males during hibernation and the time needed for testes growth and spermatogenesis favours an earlier emergence for males which was probably achieved by their preference for the more sun exposed north-facing boulder field. A sexual dimorphism in hibernation strategies and spring emergence therefore enables mountain pygmy-possums to cope with their harsh alpine environment. Turkish hamsters (Mesocricetus brandti) are a model organism for studies of hibernation, yet a detailed account of their torpor characteristics has not been undertaken. This study employed continuous telemetric monitoring of body temperature (T b) in hibernating male and female Turkish hamsters at ambient temperatures (T as) of 5 and 13 °C to precisely characterize torpor bout depth, duration, and frequency, as well as rates of entry into and arousal from torpor. Hamsters generated brief intervals of short (<12 h), shallow test bouts (T b > 20 °C), followed by deep torpor bouts lasting 4–6 days at T a = 5 °C and 2–3 days at T a = 13 °C. Females at T a = 5 °C had longer bouts than males, but maintained higher torpor T b; there were no sex differences at T a = 13 °C. Neither body mass loss nor food intake differed between the two T as. Hamsters entered torpor primarily during the scotophase (subjective night), but timing of arousals was highly variable. Hamsters at both T as generated short, shallow torpor bouts between deep bouts, suggesting that this species may be capable of both hibernation and daily torpor.  相似文献

The kinetics of the torque-velocity (T-ω) relationship after aerobic exercise was studied to assess the effect of fatigue on the contractile properties of muscle. A group of 13 subjects exercised until fatigued on a cycle ergometer, at an intensity which corresponded to 60% of their maximal aerobic power for 50 min (MAP60%); ten subjects exercised until fatigued at 80% of their maximal aerobic power for 15 min (MAP80%). Of the subjects 7 exercised at both intensities with at least a 1-week interval between sessions. Pedalling rate was set at 60 rpm. The T-ω relationship was determined from the velocity data collected during all-out sprints against a 19 N · m braking torque on the same ergometer, according to a method proposed previously. Maximal theoretical velocity (ω0) and maximal theoretical torque (T 0) were estimated by extrapolation of the linear T-ω relationship. Maximal power (P max) was calculated from the values of T 0 and ω0 (P max = 0.25 ω0T 0). The T-ω relationships were determined before, immediately after and 5 and 10 min after the aerobic exercise. The kinetics of ω0, T 0 and P max was assumed to express the effects of fatigue on the muscle contractile properties (maximal shortening velocity, maximal muscle strength and maximal power). Immediately after exercise at MAP60% a 7.8% decrease in T 0 and 8.8% decrease in P max was seen while the decrease in ω0 was nonsignificant, which suggested that P max decreased in the main because of a loss in maximal muscle strength. In contrast, MAP80% induced a 8.1% decrease in ω0 and 12.8% decrease in P max while the decrease in T 0 was nonsignificant, which suggested that the main cause of the decrease in P max was probably a slowing of maximal shortening velocity. The short recovery time of the T-ω relationship suggests that the causes of the decrease of torque and velocity are processes which recover rapidly. Accepted: 25 November 1996  相似文献

Five water monitor lizards, Varanus salvator salvator, and four clouded monitor lizards, Varanus bengalensis nebulosus, were caught on Tioman island in Malaysia. A radio-thermistor transmitter was implanted into the buccal cavity of each animal, and they were released into an enclosure measuring 5.5 × 6.5 metres. The lizards were observed for 9 and 8 days, respectively, before and after the parietal eye was covered with aluminium foil. With uncovered parietal eye, both species showed a clear diurnal rhythm, being active only during day time. After covering the parietal eye, the mean locomotor activity of five V. s. salvator decreased from 791 to 107 min · day–1 but remained unchanged around 850 min · day–1 for V. b. nebulosus. The mean duration of locomotor activity decreased in V. s. salvator and V. b. nebulosus after the parietal eye was covered, but V. b. nebulosus maintained its locomotor activity by increasing the number of locomotor bouts. The water monitor spent very little time on thermoregulation. Its body temperature ranged between 26.3 and 28.4 °C, which decreased after the parietal eye was covered. The clouded monitor thermoregulated around 28.8–36.0 °C, which remained unchanged after the parietal eye was covered. In both species, there was a strong correlation between body temperature and ambient temperature. Behavioural abnormalities were recorded among V. s. salvator with covered parietal eye. They were often observed to be active by night and often slept outside a burrow. The circadian rhythm of V. b. nebulosus appeared unaffected by shielding of its parietal eye. Captivity combined with shielded parietal eye induced agonistic behaviour in both species. Accepted: 11 September 1996  相似文献

Indirect indices of exercise-induced human skeletal muscle damage and connective tissue breakdown were studied following a single bout of voluntary eccentric muscle contractions. Subjects (six female, two male), mean (SD) age 22 (2) years performed a bout of 50 maximum voluntary eccentric contractions of the knee extensors of a single leg. The eccentric exercise protocol induced muscle soreness (P < 0.05 Wilcoxon test), chronic force loss, and a decline in the 20:100 Hz percutaneous electrical myostimulation force ratio [P < 0.01, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA)]. Serum creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were elevated (P < 0.01, repeated measures ANOVA) following the bout. The mean (SD) CK and LDH levels recorded 3 days post-exercise were 2815 (4144) IU · l–1 and 375 (198) IU · l–1, respectively. Serum alkaline phosphatase activity showed no changes throughout the study, and a non-significant increase (P = 0.058, repeated measures ANOVA) in pyridinoline was recorded following the bout. Urinary hydroxyproline (HP) and hydroxylysine (HL) excretion, expressed in terms of creatinine (Cr) concentration, increased after exercise (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively, repeated measures ANOVA). An increased HP:Cr was recorded 2 days post-exercise and HL:Cr was increased above baseline on days 2, 5, and 9 post-exercise. This indirect evidence of exercise-induced muscle damage suggests that myofibre disruption was caused by the eccentric muscle contractions. Elevated urine concentrations of indirect indices of collagen breakdown following eccentric muscle contractions suggests an increased breakdown of connective tissue, possibly due to a localised inflammatory response. This study investigated the effects on running economy (RE) of ingesting either no fluid or an electrolyte solution with or without 6% carbohydrate (counterbalanced design) during 60-min running bouts at 80% maximal oxygen consumption (O2max). Tests were undertaken in either a thermoneutral (22–23°C; 56–62% relative humidity, RH) or a hot and humid natural environment (Singapore: 25–35°C; 66–77% RH). The subjects were 15 young adult male Singaporeans [O2max = 55.5 (4.4 SD) ml kg−1 min−1]. The RE was measured at 3 m s−1 [65 (6)% O2max] before (RE1) and after each prolonged run (RE2). Fluids were administered every 2 min, at an individual rate determined from prior tests, to maintain body mass (group mean = 17.4 ml min−1). The O2 during RE2 was higher (P < 0.05) than that during the RE1 test for all treatments, with no differences between treatments (ANOVA). The mean increase in O2 from RE1 to RE2 ranged from 3.4 to 4.7 ml kg−1 min−1 across treatments. In conclusion, the deterioration in RE at 3 m s−1 (65% O2max) after 60 min of running at 80% O2max appears to occur independently of whether fluid is ingested and regardless of whether the fluid contains carbohydrates or electrolytes, in both a thermoneutral and in a hot, humid environment. The heat increment of feeding (HIF), a transient postprandial increase in metabolic rate, is the energy cost of processing a meal. We measured HIF in house wren chicks (Troglodytes aedon) ranging in mass from 1.6 to 10.3 g. This mass range (age 2–10 days) spanned a transition from blind, naked, ectothermic chicks through alert, endothermic birds with nearly complete feathering. We fed chicks crickets (2.7–10% of chick body mass) and determined HIF from continuous measurements of oxygen consumption rate (O2) before and after meals. At warm ambient temperatures (T a) of 33–36 °C, the magnitude of HIF (in ml O2 or joules) was linearly related to meal mass and was not affected by chick mass. HIF accounted for 6.3% of ingested energy, which is within the range of results for other carnivorous vertebrates. The duration of HIF was inversely related to chick mass; 10-g chicks processed a standard meal approximately twice as fast as 2-g chicks. HIF duration increased with increasing meal mass. The peak O2 during HIF, expressed as the factorial increase above resting metabolism, was independent of body mass and meal mass. In large, endothermic chicks ( > 8 g), HIF substituted for thermoregulatory heat production at low T a. Accepted: 11 December 1996  相似文献

Temporal patterns of hibernation were studied by continuous monitoring of body temperature by radiotelemetry over 6 months in European hamsters, Cricetus cricetus, at constant temperature and photoperiod. Entrances into hibernation occurred mostly at the end of the night (0000–0800 hours), while arousals were randomly distributed between day and night. This is at variance with a control of bout duration by a clock with a period of 24 h. Consequently, the timing of entrances implies a phase-resetting of the circadian clock on each arousal. Persistence of circadian rhythmicity with a period different from 24 h during deep hibernation was investigated examining whether the durations of torpor bouts were integer multiples of a constant period. A non-parametric version of the classical contingency test of periodicity was developed for this purpose. Periods ranging from 21 to 29 h were tested. Nine animals out of ten showed at least one significant period in this range (P<0.01), either below 24 h (21.8±0.5 h, n=4) or above (27.3±0.5 h, n=7). However, we have found a theoretical model of bout durations for which the contingency test of periodicity sometimes gives false significant results. This indicates that the power of the test is weak. With this reservation our results suggest that a circadian oscillator controls the duration of a bout of hibernation, which would occur after an integer, but variable and possibly temperature-dependent number of cycles.Abbreviations b a contingency test (see Appendix) - SCN suprachiasmatic nuclei - period - T b body temperature  相似文献

Photoperiodic time measurement regulating larval diapause in the pitcher-plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii, varies in a close relationship with latitude. The critical photoperiod mediating the maintenance and termination of diapause is positively correlated with latitude (r 2 = 0.977) among six populations from southern (30–31° N), intermediate (40° N), and northern (46–49° N) latitudes in North America. The developmental response to unnaturally short and to unnaturally long photoperiods declines with increasing latitude, so that longer critical photoperiods are associated with a downward rather than a lateral shift in the photoperiodic response curve. Exotic light and dark cycles of varying period (T) with a short (10 h) photophase and a scotophase ranging from 14 (T = 24) to 62 (T = 72) h, reveal two geographic patterns: a decline in perturbability of the photoperiodic clock with increasing latitude, and no change with latitude in the 21-h period of rising and falling development with increasing T. These results show (1) that there is a rhythmic component to photoperiodic time measurement in W. smithii, (2) that the period of this rhythm is about 21 h in all populations, and (3) that more northern populations show decreasing responsiveness to photoperiod and increasing stability against perturbation by exotic period lengths (T > 24). Previous studies on W.␣smithii indicate that this single temperate species of a tropical and subtropical genus has evolved from south to north. We therefore conclude that the evolution of increasing critical photoperiod in W. smithii during its adaptive radiation into North America has more likely involved the amplitude and not the period of the underlying circadian pacemaker. The effects of hydromineral hormones and catecholamines on renal concentrating ability at different hydration states were examined in five male volunteers while they performed three trials. Each of these trials comprised a 60-min exercise bout on a treadmill (at 50% of maximal oxygen uptake) in a warm environment (dry bulb temperature, 35°C; relative humidity, 20–30%). In one session, subjects were euhydrated before exercise (C). In the two other sessions, after thermal dehydration (loss of 3% body mass) which markedly reduced plasma volume (PV) and increased plasma osmolality (osmpl), the subjects exercised either not rehydrated (Dh) or rehydrated (Rh) by drinking 600 ml of mineral water before and 40 min after the onset of exercise. During exercise in the Dh compared to C state, plasma renin, aldosterone, arginine vasopressin (AVP), noradrenaline and adrenaline concentrations were increased (P < 0.05). A reduction in creatinine clearance and urine flow was also observed (P < 0.05) together with a decrease in urine osmolality, osmolar clearance and sodium excretion, while free water clearance increased (P < 0.05). However, compared to Dh, Rh partially restored PV and osmpl and induced a marked reduction in the time courses of both the plasma AVP and catecholamine responses (P < 0.05). Values for renal water and electrolyte excretion were intermediate between those of Dh and C. Plasma atrial natriuretic peptide presented similar changes whatever the hydration state. These results demonstrate that during moderate exercise in the heat, renal concentrating ability is paradoxically reduced by prior dehydration in spite of high plasma AVP levels, and might be the result of marked activation of the sympatho-adrenal system. Rehydration, by reducing this activation, could partially restore the renal concentrating ability despite the lowered plasma AVP. Accepted: 23 April 1997  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a thiamin derivative, thiamin tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide (TTFD), on oxygen uptake (˙VO2), lactate accumulation and cycling performance during exercise to exhaustion. Using a randomized, double-blind, cross-over design with a 10-day washout between trials, 14 subjects ingested either 1 g · day−1 of TTFD or a placebo (PL) for 4 days. On day 3, subjects performed a progressive exercise test to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer for the determination of ˙VO2submax, ˙VO2peak, lactate concentration ([La ]), lactate threshold (ThLa) and heart rate ( f c). On day 4, subjects performed a maximal 2000-m time trial on a cycle ergometer. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures was used to determine significant differences between trials. There were no significant differences detected between trials for serial measures of ˙VO2submax, [La] or f c. Likewise, ˙VO2peak [PL 4.06 (0.19) TTFD 4.12 (0.19) l · min−1, P = 0.83], ThLa [PL 2.47 (0.17), TTFD 2.43 (0.16) l · min−1, P = 0.86] and 2000-m performance time [PL 204.5 (5.5), TTFD 200.9 (4.3) s, P = 0.61] were not significantly different between trials. The results of this study suggest that thiamin derivative supplementation does not influence high-intensity exercise performance. Accepted: 19 December 1996  相似文献

In the Swiss Prealps Entomobrya nivalis hibernates in an inactive state, hidden under bark flakes on spruce. For freeze avoidance it relies on thermal hysteresis proteins (THPs) and polyols (mainly ribitol, with small amounts arabitol and threitol). Polyols are present only during the inactive state, THPs additionally protect during the transition phase in spring and autumn, when animals are still active but frosts may occur. Peak values were recorded in February/March for THPs (3.5 °C hysteresis between melting and freezing point) and for polyols (26 μg mg−1 FW; hemolymph osmolality 680 mosmol l−1). E. nivalis is able to control its hemolymph osmolality independently of body water content. Mean osmolality in summer was 350– 440 mosmol l−1, in winter it was elevated to 650 mosmol l−1, due to a synthesis mainly of ribitol. Body water content varied between 1.8 and 3.3 mg H2O mg−1 DW, depending on humidity conditions. Experiments on triggering of antifreeze synthesis showed the action of temperature and photoperiod as cues, but there was also evidence for an endogenous rhythm. No clear correlation between antifreeze concentration and supercooling ability could be established, suggesting that gut content or other parameters also play an inportant role. We studied daily rhythmicity of body temperature (T b) before and during hibernation in Anatolian ground squirrels (Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) under natural and laboratory conditions using surgically implanted temperature loggers. Under both conditions, robust daily T b rhythmicity with parameters comparable to those of other ground squirrel species was observed before but not during hibernation. Euthermic animals had robust daily T b rhythms with a mean of 37.0°C and a range of excursion of approximately 4°C. No T b rhythm was detected during torpor bouts, either because T b rhythmicity was absent or because the daily range of excursion was smaller than 0.2°C. The general patterns of hibernation that we observed in Anatolian ground squirrels were similar to those previously observed by other investigators in other species of ground squirrels.  相似文献

Carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) were studied in evergreen and deciduous forest ecosystems in semi-arid Utah (Pinus contorta, Populus tremuloides, Acer negundo and Acer grandidentatum). Measurements were taken in four to five stands of each forest ecosystem differing in overstory leaf area index (LAI) during two consecutive growing seasons. The δ13Cleaf (and carbon isotope discrimination) of understory vegetation in the evergreen stands (LAI 1.5–2.2) did not differ among canopies with increasing LAI, whereas understory in the deciduous stands (LAI 1.5–4.5) exhibited strongly decreasing δ13Cleaf values (increasing carbon isotope discrimination) with increasing LAI. The δ13C values of needles and leaves at the top of the canopy were relatively constant over the entire LAI range, indicating no change in intrinsic water-use efficiency with overstory LAI. In all canopies, δ13Cleaf decreased with decreasing height above the forest floor, primarily due to physiological changes affecting c i/c a (> 60%) and to a minor extent due to δ13C of canopy air (< 40%). This intra-canopy depletion of δ13Cleaf was lowest in the open stand (1‰) and greatest in the denser stands (4.5‰). Although overstory δ13Cleaf did not change with canopy LAI, δ13C of soil organic carbon increased with increasing LAI in Pinus contorta and Populus tremuloides ecosystems. In addition, δ13C of decomposing organic carbon became increasingly enriched over time (by 1.7–2.9‰) for all deciduous and evergreen dry temperate forests. The δ13Ccanopy of CO2 in canopy air varied temporally and spatially in all forest stands. Vertical canopy gradients of δ13Ccanopy, and [CO2]canopy were larger in the deciduous Populus tremuloides than in the evergreen Pinu contorta stands of similar LAI. In a very wet and cool year, ecosystem discrimination (Δe) was similar for both deciduous Populus tremulodies (18.0 ± 0.7‰) and evergreen Pinus contorta (18.3 ± 0.9‰) stands. Gradients of δ13Ccanopy and [CO2]canopy were larger in denser Acer spp. stands than those in the open stand. However, 13C enrichment above and photosynthetic draw-down of [CO2]canopy below tropospheric baseline values were larger in the open than in the dense stands, due to the presence of a vigorous understory vegetation. Seasonal patterns of the relationship δ13Ccanopy versus 1/[CO2]canopy were strongly influenced by precipitation and air temperature during the growing season. Estimates of Δe for Acer spp. did not show a significant effect of stand structure, and averaged 16.8 ± 0.5‰ in 1933 and 17.4 ± 0.7‰ in 1994. However, Δe varied seasonally with small fluctuations for the open stand (2‰), but more pronounced changes for the dense stand (5‰). Received: 15 April 1996 / Accepted: 19 October 1996  相似文献
