Studied were the age, growth, maturity and food composition of the brown meager, Sciaena umbra, caught off Trabzon, south-eastern Black Sea (Turkey) in 2002–2003. A total of 329 individuals was collected by spear fishing and hand nets. The thin sectioning method was used for aging the fish otoliths. Fitted von Bertalanffy growth parameters for all fish were: L  = 51.14 (±1.19) cm, k  =   0.27 (±0.02) year−1 and t 0 = −0.93 (±0.07) year. This study revealed that S. umbra is a relatively slow-growing and long-lived species with a life span in excess of 18 years. Sexual maturity begins when they reach a length of about 15 cm. Lengths at which 50% of brown meagre become mature are 19.50 for males and about 22 cm for females. Spawning begins in June, when the temperature is approximately 18°C, and ends in August. Gut content analysis indicated that this species feeds mainly on crustaceans, then switches to fish as they grow. Sciaena umbra appears to be an apex predator in the upper littoral zone.  相似文献

Age, growth and reproduction of the black scorpionfish, Scorpaena porcus were studied in specimens from the coast of the Sinop Peninsula (Black Sea) between March 2002 and April 2003 in order to characterize these population parameters in comparison to specimens from populations of nearby regions. A total of 1086 specimens was captured by beam trawl at the depths between 0 and 30 m. The total number of females (510) was significantly higher than that of males (373). Total length of males and females ranged between 5.7 and 23.6 cm, and 4.9 and 31.7 cm, respectively. The length–weight relationship showed a positive allometric growth. Females grew faster and reached a larger size at age than males ( L  = 111.9 cm, K  = 0.035 year−1, φ' = 2.64 for females, and L  = 74.6 cm, K  = 0.054 year−1, φ' = 2.49 for males). The age range estimated was up to 8 years for females and 5 years for males. Reproduction likely occurs between June and September. Sex ratio varied greatly with season, perhaps indicating different seasonal migratory patterns in adults of different sex. An inverse correlation between gonadosomatic index (GSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) was evident during the reproduction seasons. The mean size at first sexual maturity was 17.5 cm TL for females, and 16.7 cm TL for males.  相似文献

Axillary seabream Pagellus acarne (Risso 1826) caught off the Canary Islands from January 1991 to December 1994 were studied. The length range of the catches was between 11 and 31 cm, with a modal distribution between 17 and 21 cm. The overall ratio of males to females was 1:1.74. Males were observed up to a length of 24 cm. Hermaphrodites were recorded at lengths between 15 and 23 cm. The species was characterized by protandric hermaphroditism. The reproductive season extended from October to March, with a peak in spawning activity in December–January. The size at sexual maturity was 15.8 cm total length (2 years old) for males and 19.4 cm total length (3 years old) for females. The total length–total weight relationship for the entire population is described by the parameters a = 0.0068, and b = 3.2401. Otolith age readings showed that the population exploited consisted of 10 age groups (1–10 years), including a very high proportion of individuals between 1 and 4 years old. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for all individuals were L = 32.98 cm, k = 0.22 years−1, and t0 = −0.87 years. Males grew comparatively slower than females. The instantaneous rates of mortality for all fish were Z = 0.96 years−1, M = 0.30 years−1, and F = 0.66 years−1. The exploitation ratio and the length at first capture were, respectively, E = 0.69 and LC50 = 16.1 cm. The stock is overexploited, therefore measures such as closed seasons or changes in fishing patterns would be desirable to safeguard the spawning stock and recruits.  相似文献

Lemon sharks Negaprion brevirostris were sampled in the Atol das Rocas, a nursery area, on nine occasions from March 1999 to October 2003, during which 157 individuals were tagged and 35 were recaptured. The male : female sex ratio of captured individuals was 1 : 1·12. Mean ±  s . d . growth rates were 24·7 ± 3·4 cm year−1 in total length ( L T), 20·7 ± 3·2 cm year−1 in fork length, and 19·5 ± 2·7 cm year−1 in precaudal length. There was no significant difference in growth rates between males and females. Mean ±  s . d . increase in mass was 2565 ± 762 g year−1. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated by the Fabens method based on L T were: k  = 0·077, L  = 399·9 cm and t 0 = −2·16. Despite the large variation of environmental conditions, particularly of tidal range and currents, and the lack of protective mangrove cover in the nursery area at Atol das Rocas, juvenile lemon sharks grew relatively faster than at other nurseries. Such rapid growth could be a response to abundant food availability or high risk of predation by adults that enter the nursery area.  相似文献

The growth of two commercially important flatfish, turbot ( Psetta maxima ) (L.) and brill ( Scophthalmus rhombus ) (L.), was investigated in the Adriatic using whole otoliths (sagittae) and stained otolith sections. At variance with the pattern usually observed in temperate seas, the opaque zone was found to be laid down in autumn and winter, and the translucent zone in spring and summer. Growth rates differed according to sex, with the females attaining greater body lengths. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L=66.2 cm, K=0.31 years–1, and t0=–0.14 years for turbot males, L=81.5 cm, K=0.21 years–1, and t0=–0.48 years for turbot females; L=40.2 cm, K=0.49 years–1, and t0=–1.03 years for brill males; L=50.1 cm, K=0.27 years–1, and t0=–1.75 years for brill females. Growth rates and maximum age recorded for turbot were comparable to those reported in the North Sea.  相似文献

Growth and feeding of stingray ( Dasyatis pastinaca ) were studied using 346 specimens from the Cilician Basin coastal area (northeastern Mediterranean). Age classes between 0 to XII were found. The total length of all specimens ranged from 14.6 to 100.9 cm, and total weight was between 22.5 and 6800 g. Total length (TL)-weight (W) and disc width (DW)-weight (W) relationships were W = 0.0033*L3.1429 and W = 0.0039*DW3.4914, respectively. The age data, derived from central readings, were used to estimate the von Bertalanffy length and weight growth parameters. The results were L = 294.9 cm, W = 198690.1 g, K = 0.029 year−1; t0 = −2.2 year. The D. pastinaca diet was composed mainly of crustaceans.  相似文献

Salema Sarpa salpa (Linnaeus, 1758), were caught in the middle-eastern Adriatic Sea from August to November 2004. Length range of the samples was between 10.3 and 43.9 cm, with mean values of 25.5 cm in males, 32.6 cm in females, and 11.4 and 20.2cm in immature and hermaphrodite specimens, respectively. Sex ratio (males : females) was 3.1 : 1. Males were observed up to 37 cm length. Hermaphrodites showed lengths between 18 and 21 cm. The species was characterized by protandric hermaphroditism. Size at sexual maturity was 20.6 cm (2 years old) for males. Total length-total weight relationship for the entire population is described by the parameters a  = 0.00893, and b  = 3.1055. Otolith age readings showed that the population consisted of 15 age groups (1–15 years), including a very high proportion of individuals 1–7 years old. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L  = 33.11cm, k  = 0.514, and t 0 = −0.392 years for males and L  = 40.85cm, k  = 0.179, and t 0 = −2.606 years for females. Survival rate of females ( S  = 0.870) was much greater than for males ( S  = 0.769).  相似文献

The mean rate of oxygen consumption (routine respiration rate, R R, mg O2 fish−1 h−1), measured for individual or small groups of haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus (3–12 cm standard length, L S) maintained for 5 days within flow‐through respiratory chambers at four different temperatures, increased with increasing dry mass ( M D). The relationship between R R and M D was allometric ( R R = α  M b ) with b values of 0·631, 0·606, 0·655 and 0·650 at 5·0, 8·0, 12·0 and 15·0° C, respectively. The effect of temperature ( T ) and M D on mean R R was described by     indicating a Q 10 of 2·27 between 5 and 15° C. Juvenile haddock routine metabolic scope, calculated as the ratio of the mean of highest and lowest deciles of R R measured in each chamber, significantly decreased with temperature such that the routine scope at 15° C was half that at 5° C. The cost of feeding ( R SDA) was c . 3% of consumed food energy, a value half that found for larger gadoid juveniles and adults.  相似文献

The relationship in geographical distribution and morphological variation of leaflet width and length (diagnostic trait), between and within populations of Dioon edule Lindl., has been investigated throughout its known range in eastern Mexico (from the states of Nuevo León to Veracruz, north to south, respectively). A total of 1832 leaflets were measured for width and length from 154 plants distributed amongst five populations using four leaflet replicas from each of three leaves per plant. For leaflet width and length the variation among populations indicated significant stat-istical differences ( F 4,147 = 125.83; P  < 0.0001; R 2 = 92.17% and F 4,147 = 9.04; P  < 0.001; R 2 = 26.8%), respectively. With respect to leaflet width, the multiple range test showed three groups with a north to south distributional relationship along the range of the species. The correlation coefficient among paired populations, respect to geographical distance and the absolute value of the mean difference of leaflet width in each population, was positive, and different from zero ( r  = 0.82; P  = 0.013). Methane metabolism was investigated with respect to depth in intertidal microbial mats of the Great Sippewissett Salt Marsh, Massachusetts. Although sulfate-reducing organisms dominate anaerobic carbon consumption in marine microbial mats, methanogens persist and their activity varies vertically and temporally in the mat system. In the Sippewissett mats, potential methane production for all mat layers was higher in the spring (17.2 ± 4.5 nmol CH4 cm−2 day−1) than in the fall (3.0 ± 1.1 nmol CH4 cm−2 day−1) and maximal rates were consistently observed in proximity to the chemocline (5–10 mm depth). The methane flux from the mat surface did not vary appreciably over time due to the ability of methanotrophic activity to limit net methane production. Evidence indicates that both aerobic and anaerobic oxidation of methane occurs in this system. The importance of H2 as a substrate for methanogenesis appeared to be the greatest at the mat surface (0–10 mm), and the proportion of methylotrophic methanogens generally increased with depth. These results suggest that both non-equilibrium H2 dynamics and the use of non-competitive substrates permit coexistence of methanogens and sulfate-reducing organisms in the mat system.  相似文献

Biology of the Macaronesian endemic rockling Gaidropsarus guttatus was studied in the Azores. The overall sex ratio from the samples was highly in favour of females (1 : 6·33). Sillago maculata is endemic to the east coast of Australia where it is harvested by recreational and commercial fishers; however, little is known of the important aspects of its biology and ecology to assist with fisheries management planning. This situation is redressed here by investigating aspects of the reproduction, age and growth of estuarine populations of S. maculata in south-eastern Australia. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) values indicated peak spawning occurred between September and February and that the estimated mean fork length at maturity (L50) was 14.6 cm for males and 15.2 cm for females. Females displayed an asynchronous pattern of oocyte development, with individuals probably spawning multiple times in a spawning season. A validated aging protocol using thin sectioned otoliths was used to estimate the age of fish. The maximum ages for males and females were 9.5 and 12.0 years, respectively. Growth differed between sexes, with males ( L ∞ = 24.04, K  = 0.70, t 0 = −0.09) attaining a smaller maximum length than females ( L ∞ = 25.01, K  = 0.72, t 0 = −0.04). The age composition of gill-net and beach-seine samples mainly consisted of individuals aged 2–4 years, and there was evidence of variable recruitment. 1.  Daphnia carinata King, a freshwater cladoceran, occurs in Lake Waihola, a tidal lake with seasonal fluctuations in temperature (4–21 °C), and salinity (30–2000 mg L–1 Cl). We hypothesise that these fluctuations influence the seasonal changes in D. carinata abundance.
2. To test this hypothesis, adults and juveniles were exposed to combinations of temperature and salinity. We measured mortality of adults and juveniles, growth of juveniles over 20 days, and their age at first reproduction.
3. The salinity tolerance of adult D. carinata was temperature-dependent. Juveniles were more sensitive to salinity, but more tolerant of temperature increases.
4. Growth rates were higher at elevated temperatures, but reduced by elevated salinities. The onset of reproduction was earlier at elevated temperatures.
5. We conclude that seasonal changes in temperature and salinity contribute to seasonal population changes of D. carinata .  相似文献

Allozymic and morphometric studies were carried out on ten populations of Syngonanthus mucugensis (Eriocaulaceae), a species from north-eastern Brazil threatened by extinction. Genetic and morphological variability was low or moderately low in all populations, being lower in populations from Rio de Contas/Catolés ( P L = 14.3–21.4, A  = 1.1–1.2, H e = 0.026–0.059, D2M = 26.893–33.157) than in those from Mucugê ( P L = 28.6–35.7, A  = 1.3–1.5, H e = 0.078–0.164, D2M = 28.999–45.077). A high coefficient of endogamy ( F is = 0.257) was found, which can be explained by the reproductive characteristics and distribution of the species. The values for genetic and morphological structuring ( F st = 0.512 and A MRPP = 0.175, respectively) were high as a result of the differentiation between populations from the two areas. The mean genetic identity between populations from the two areas (0.812) was much lower than between populations from the same area (Mucugê, 0.980; Rio de Contas/Catolés, 0.997). These results indicate that we are dealing with two distinct taxa and, as a result of the nature of the morphological differences found, a new subspecies is described for the populations of the region of Rio de Contas and Catolés, Syngonanthus mucugensis ssp. riocontensis . In many parts of the world release of hatchery‐reared smolts has long been used to mitigate for the deleterious effects of habitat loss and overfishing on salmonid populations. Of increasing concern is whether this may cause harm by spreading non‐native stocks and potentially releasing incompetent smolts. The objective of this study was to determine if smolt physiology and behavior of juveniles produced from a recently founded native broodstock differ from their wild (naturally‐reared) counterparts. In the fall of 2002 and 2003 juvenile wild steelhead were captured, PIT tagged, and returned ( n  = 1360 in 2002 and n  = 2708 in 2003) to Abernathy Creek. In winter of 2003 and 2004 hatchery‐reared fish were PIT tagged and later released ( n  = 1100 in 2003 and n  = 1400 in 2004) into Abernathy Creek. Gill biopsies were collected from wild and hatchery fish throughout the rearing and out‐migration season. The timing and speed of outmigration was assessed using two stationary PIT tag antennas (92–97% efficient). Hatchery migrants in 2003 were larger, had significantly lower gill Na+, K+‐ATPase activities, and migrated slower than wild fish. Results from the 2004 migratory season will also be presented. This study shows that hatchery rearing can result in smolts which are physiologically and behaviourally different from genetically similar wild fish. Whether these differences are critical enough to affect the rate of adult returns will be determined in future years.  相似文献

Population structure, growth, length–weight relationship, mortality and stock size of tench, Tinca tinca (L.), was studied in Lake Beyşehir, Turkey in 2005. Totals of 3360 tench (1865 males; 1795 females) were captured with gill- and trammel-nets of various mesh sizes. Male to female ratio was 1.04 : 1. The study covered length year classes. Fork lengths and total weights ranged from 9 to 37 cm and 13 to 815 g. For all individuals, the von Bertalanffy growth equation and length–weight relationship were L t = 54.2[1−exp(−0.1350( t  + 1.0281)] and W  = 0.0151  L 2.9993, respectively. Growth performance index and mean condition factor of the tench population were 2.598 and 1.513, respectively. Mortality rates were Z  = 1.97 year−1, M  = 0.29 year−1 and F  = 1.68 year−1 for total, natural, and fishing mortality, respectively. The exploitation rate was E  = 0.85, and the percentage of surviving fish was 13.9%. Tench stock was assessed as about 6–7 million individuals and 1450–1500 tonnes in biomass. It was determined that maximum sustainable yield could be obtained with an 80% level of the current fishing effort.  相似文献

The biology of the Canary Islands annular seabream Diplodus annularis (Linnaeus 1758) was studied from samples collected between January and December 1998. Fish ranged from 82 to 209 mm total length in size and from 8.7 to 137.1 g in weight. The mean length showed an increase with increasing water depth. Males showed a negative allometric growth and females isometric growth. The species was characterized by protandric hermaphroditism. The overall sex ratio was unbalanced in favour of males (1 : 0.79). The reproductive season extended from January to May, with a peak in spawning activity in March–April. Males reached maturity at a smaller length (103 mm, 1-year-old) than females (128 mm, 2-year-old). Fish aged 0–6 years were found. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for all individuals were: L=247.9 mm, k=0.268 years–1, and t0=–0.879 years.  相似文献

This study examined the attachment kinetics of Yersinia enterocolitica serotype O:3 to determine the optimum conditions for its isolation from meat enrichment systems using a novel surface adhesion technique. Minced beef was inoculated with Y. enterocolitica at an initial level of 10 cfu g−1 and incubated at 25 °C in an enrichment broth. Yersinia was recovered from enriched samples on polycarbonate membranes by surface adhesion and enumerated using immunofluorescence microscopy. The surface adhesion immunofluorescence technique (SAIF) had a minimum detection limit of approximately 4·0–4·5 log10 cfu ml−1 and provided good correlation between the estimation of the numbers of Yersinia in the enrichment broth derived from plate counts on Yersinia Selective agar (CIN) and those determined by SAIF ( r 2 = 0·94; rsd = ± 0·21). A derived regression equation of the SAIF count vs plate counts was used to predict Y. enterocolitica numbers in spiked meat samples stored at 0 °C for up to 20 d. The numbers as predicted by the SAIF method showed good correlation with counts derived by plating techniques ( r 2 = 0·78; rsd = ± 0·42). The application of the SAIF technique for the rapid detection of Y. enterocolitica serotype O:3 from meat is discussed.  相似文献

We have investigated the transport and canalicular enrichment of fluorescent phosphatidylcholine (PC) in HepG2 cells using the fluorescent analogs of PC C6-NBD-PC and β-BODIPY-PC. Fluorescent PC was efficiently transported to the biliary canaliculus (BC) and became enriched on the lumenal side of the canalicular membrane as shown for C6-NBD-PC. Some fluorescent PC was transported in vesicles to a subapical compartment (SAC) or apical recycling compartment (ARC) in polarized HepG2 cells as shown by colocalization with fluorescent sphingomyelin (C6-NBD-SM) and fluorescent transferrin, respectively. Extensive trafficking of vesicles containing fluorescent PC between the basolateral domain, the SAC/ARC and the BC as well as endocytosis of PC analogs from the canalicular membrane were found. Evidence for nonvesicular transport included enrichment of the PC-analog β-BODIPY-PC in the BC (t1/2 = 3.54 min) prior to its accumulation in the SAC/ARC (t1/2 = 18.5 min) at 37 °C. Transport of fluorescent PC to the canalicular membrane also continued after disruption of the actin or microtubule cytoskeleton and at 2 °C. These results indicate that: (i) a nonvesicular transport pathway significantly contributes to the canalicular enrichment of PC in hepatocytic cells, and (ii) vesicular transport of fluorescent PC occurs from both membrane domains via the SAC/ARC.  相似文献

Resting spore formation of some aphid-pathogenic Entomophthorales is important for the seasonal pattern of their prevalence and survival but this process is poorly understood. To explore the possible mechanism involved in the process, Pandora nouryi (obligate aphid pathogen) interacted with green peach aphid Myzus persicae on cabbage leaves under favourable conditions. Host nymphs showered with primary conidia of an isolate (LC50: 0.9–6.7 conidia mm−2 4–7 days post shower) from air captures in the low-latitude plateau of China produced resting spores (azygospores), primary conidia or both spore types. Surprisingly, the proportion of mycosed cadavers forming resting spores ( P cfrs ) increased sharply within the concentrations ( C ) of 28–240 conidia mm−2, retained high levels at 240–1760, but was zero or extremely low at 0.3–16. The P cfrs – C relationship fit well the logistic equation P cfrs  = 0.6774/[1 + exp(3.1229–0.0270 C )] ( r 2 = 0.975). This clarified for the first time the dependence of in vivo resting spore formation of P. nouryi upon the concentration of infective inoculum. A hypothesis is thus proposed that some sort of biochemical signals may exist in the host–pathogen interaction so that the fungal pathogen perceives the signals for prompt response to forthcoming host-density changes by either producing conidia for infecting available hosts or forming resting spores for surviving host absence in situ .  相似文献
