We aimed to evaluate the currently used allometric models, as well as to propose a reliable and accurate model using non-destructive measurements of leaf length (L) and/or width (W), for estimating the area of leaves of eight field-grown coffee cultivars. For model construction, a total of 1563 leaves were randomly selected from different levels of the tree canopies and encompassed the full spectrum of measurable leaf sizes (0.3–263 cm2) for each genotype. Power models better fit coffee leaf area (LA) than linear models. To validate the model, an independent data set of 388 leaves was used. We demonstrated that the currently used allometric models are biased, underestimating the area of a coffee leaf. We developed a single power model     based on two leaf dimensions [LA = 0.6626 (LW)1.0116; standard errors: β0 = 0.0064, β1 = 0.0019; R2 = 0.996] with high precision and accuracy, random dispersion pattern of residuals and also unbiased, irrespective of cultivar and leaf size and shape. Even when the L (but not width) alone was used as the single leaf dimension, the power model developed still predicted with good accuracy the LA but at the expense of some loss of precision, as particularly found for 8% of the leaves sampled with length-to-width ratios below 2.0 or above 3.0.  相似文献

Dioon edule Lindl. (Zamiaceae) is a cycad endemic to Mexico, that occurs as one species D. edule and the geographical variety D. edule var. angustifolium (Miq.) Miq. Dioon edule has a north to south distribution in eastern Mexico. In this study, we analysed 14 allozymic loci in eight populations of D. edule from its total distribution range by sampling all known populations. Patterns of diversity and genetic variability, within and among populations, were obtained. The mean number of alleles per locus ( A ) was 1.44 and the percentage of polymorphic loci was relatively high ( P  = 54.78). The mean observed ( H O ) and expected heterozygosity ( H E ) were 0.27 and 0.24, respectively. F -statistics revealed an excess of heterozygous genotypes, locally and globally ( F  = −0.17 and f  = −0.27, respectively). The genetic variation explained by differences among populations was only 7.5%. We also detected a negative relationship between genetic diversity and latitude. On average, the gene flow between population pairs was relatively high ( Nm  = 2.98); furthermore, gene flow between population pairs was significantly correlated with geographical distances ( r  = −0.38, P  = 0.025). Therefore, patterns of genetic diversity in D. edule appear to be associated with the post-Pleistocene spread of the species, from its southerly (origin) to its northerly range (derived populations, including its central distribution). The biogeographical and evolutionary aspects of the results of this study are discussed. We recognize Dioon angustifolium Miq. for the northernmost disjunct populations.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80 , 457–467  相似文献

Habitats are now becoming increasingly fragmented throughout the world due to intense cultivation. As a consequence, populations of some animals with low mobility have become isolated, thus increasing the risk of inbreeding and local extinction. In Britain, weakly flying geometric moths of the genus Epirrita are a good model species with which to test the genetic effects of habitat fragmentation on insect populations. Genetic variation within and between populations of two Epirrita species captured using a network of light traps at two spatial scales (local and national) was assessed using allozyme electrophoresis, with particular reference to the local scale (the 330-ha arable farm estate at Rothamsted, Hertfordshire, in southern Britain). Populations sampled widely in England and Wales displayed low (but statistically significant) levels of genetic differentiation for both species ( F st  = 0.0051–0.0114 and 0.0226 for E. dilutata and E. christyi , respectively). However, analysis of large samples of E. dilutata from four small woods at Rothamsted revealed low ( F st  = 0.0046) but significant differentiation, indicating that gene flow was restricted, even at this very small scale. It was concluded that small intervening patches of farmland (often a few fields width) were enough to prevent genetic homogeneity. The close similarity between more distant Epirrita populations was considered to be a result of historical, rather than recurrent gene flow, as genetic equilibrium between drift and gene flow is unlikely over such scales.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London . Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 78 , 467–477.  相似文献

Impact of temperature on food intake and growth in juvenile burbot   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
The effect of temperature on food consumption, food conversion and somatic growth was investigated with juvenile burbot Lota lota (age 0 years). Juvenile burbot showed a significant dome shaped relationship between relative daily food consumption ( C R) and temperature ( T ) with C R = − 0·00044 T 2 + 0·01583 T  − 0·06010; ( n  = 90, r 2 = 0·61). Maximum C R was at 17·9° C (95% CL 17·2–18·6° C). The temperature related instantaneous growth rate ( G ) also followed a dome shaped function with G  = − 0·000063 T 2 + 0·002010 T  − 0·007462; ( n  = 95, r 2 = 0·57), with maximum growth rate at 16·0° C (95% CL 15·3–16·6° C). A significant linear relationship was found between the water temperature and the conversion coefficient ( C C) with C C = − 1·63 T  + 59·04; ( n  = 80, r 2 = 0·74). The results indicate that juvenile burbot in large lakes benefit from higher water temperatures in the littoral zone, by increased food uptake and growth, especially during the warm summer months. Because profundal water temperatures do not reflect the optimal temperature for food consumption in large burbot, temperature is unlikely to be the main proximate factor for the obligate littoral‐profundal migration of juvenile burbot observed in many lake populations.  相似文献

Age at length, growth and reproduction of 220 Mastacembelus mastacembelus specimens from the Atatürk Dam Lake were studied from July 2005 to July 2006. Total lengths and weights ranged from 7.0 to 85.0 cm and from 6 to 1100 g, respectively. Maximum age was 13 years. The regression model fitted to length and weight data was W  =   0.0228  L 2.43 for males and W  =   0.0029  L 2.95 for females. The von Bertalaffy growth equations for males and females were L t  = 99.2 [1−e−0.11 ( t −0.12)] and L t  = 69.2 [1−e−0.26 ( t −0.35)], respectively. Males dominated especially at an older age; the overall sex ratio was 1 : 0.63 (M:F). The breeding period was from May to July. Fecundity ranged from 2540 to 24 000 eggs per female.  相似文献

The monsoon affected mountains of the southern Arabian Peninsula harbour in climatically favoured refugia vegetation elements of palaeo-African origin. To understand better the temporal and spatial differentiation of these refugia, chloroplast variation in Justicia areysiana Deflers (Acanthaceae), a shrub species endemic to the Yemeni and Omani mountains close to the Arabian Sea, was studied using PCR-RFLP and chloroplast microsatellite diversity. Eleven haplotypes were characterized and show a distinct geographical distribution pattern with a deep split between populations from south Yemeni fog oases and those from Hawf Mountains/Dhofar region in east Yemen and south Oman. Very limited haplotype diversity within populations (hS = 0.15) and a high level of population differentiation (GST = 0.81) demonstrate the strong genetic isolation of populations from each other. Past oscillations between humid and arid periods connected with glacial and interglacial episodes in the Pleistocene and Holocene are considered responsible for the observed patterns of genetic variation.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 148 , 437–444.  相似文献

This study examined the attachment kinetics of Yersinia enterocolitica serotype O:3 to determine the optimum conditions for its isolation from meat enrichment systems using a novel surface adhesion technique. Minced beef was inoculated with Y. enterocolitica at an initial level of 10 cfu g−1 and incubated at 25 °C in an enrichment broth. Yersinia was recovered from enriched samples on polycarbonate membranes by surface adhesion and enumerated using immunofluorescence microscopy. The surface adhesion immunofluorescence technique (SAIF) had a minimum detection limit of approximately 4·0–4·5 log10 cfu ml−1 and provided good correlation between the estimation of the numbers of Yersinia in the enrichment broth derived from plate counts on Yersinia Selective agar (CIN) and those determined by SAIF ( r 2 = 0·94; rsd = ± 0·21). A derived regression equation of the SAIF count vs plate counts was used to predict Y. enterocolitica numbers in spiked meat samples stored at 0 °C for up to 20 d. The numbers as predicted by the SAIF method showed good correlation with counts derived by plating techniques ( r 2 = 0·78; rsd = ± 0·42). The application of the SAIF technique for the rapid detection of Y. enterocolitica serotype O:3 from meat is discussed.  相似文献

Levels of allozyme variation and intrapopulation spatial genetic structure of the two terrestrial clonal orchids Liparis kumokiri , a self-compatible relatively common species, and L. makinoana , a self-incompatible rare species, were examined for 17 ( N  = 1875) and four ( N  = 425) populations, respectively, in South Korea. Populations of L. makinoana harboured high levels of genetic variation ( H e = 0.319) across 15 loci. In contrast, L. kumokiri exhibited a complete lack of allozyme variation ( H e = 0.000). Considering the lack of genetic variability, it is suggested that current populations of L. kumokiri in South Korea originated from a genetically depauperate ancestral population. For L. makinoana , a significant deficit of heterozygosity (mean F IS = 0.198) was found in population samples excluding clonal ramets, suggesting that pollen dispersal is localized, generating biparental inbreeding. The significant fine-scale genetic structuring (≤ 2 m) found in a previous study, in addition to the moderate levels of population differentiation ( F ST = 0.107) and the significant relationship between genetic and geographical distances ( r  = 0.680) found here, suggests a leptokurtic distribution of seed dispersal for L. makinoana . Although populations of L. makinoana harbour high levels of genetic variation, they are affected by a recent genetic bottleneck. This information suggests that genetic drift and limited gene flow could be the main evolutionary forces for speciation of a species-rich genus such as Liparis .  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 41–48.  相似文献

Allozyme diversity was studied within and among populations of five related taxa of Antirrhinum L. endemic to the Iberian Peninsula ( A. graniticum Rothm. ssp. graniticum , ssp. brachycalyx Sutton and ssp. ambiguum (Lange) Mateu & Segarra, A. boissieri Rothm. and A. onubensis (Fdez. Casas) Fdez. Casas). All of the studied taxa are obligate outcrossing endemic perennial herbs which form isolated populations. However, the taxa vary in range and population sizes, and are found on different soil types. The level and distribution of allozyme diversity differed widely between taxa: A. graniticum ssp. brachycalyx had the lowest level of allozyme diversity (HT = 0.09), whilst the highest level was detected in A. boissieri (HT = 0.25). Total variation was partitioned into within- and among-population variation. The proportion attributable to variation within populations varied from about 67% up to 84.3% and 89.5% in A. graniticum ssp. brachycalyx and A. graniticum ssp. ambiguum , respectively. Both these subspecies also showed little population divergence (GST = 0.10 and 0.09, respectively) and had high levels of estimated gene flow (Nm = 2.18 and 2.62, respectively). These results are discussed in relation to geographical proximity of populations and habitat continuity. Isolation by distance was not detected in any of the studied taxa. This result suggests that divergence among populations is due to random genetic drift.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London . Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 79 , 299–307.  相似文献

Saintpaulia (H. Wendl.) is a forest-dependent, endangered plant genus endemic to Tanzania and Kenya. The taxonomy of Saintpaulia from the Usambara Mountains and adjacent lowlands in north-eastern Tanzania is problematic because of the morphological similarity of the species and the presence of considerable intraspecific variation. Conventional molecular phylogenetic methods have failed to reveal the genetic structure of this Saintpaulia complex. In this study, we assessed the genetic composition of 12 Saintpaulia populations, representing four different morphotypes, from the East Usambara Mountains using inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Relatively high genetic diversities were observed within populations (mean h  = 0.320), indicating their adaptive potential. Little genetic differentiation amongst populations (mean F st  = 0.063) and the genetic divergence of the rosulate and trailing morphotypes support the hypothesis of ongoing divergent evolution within the East Usambara metapopulation(s) of Saintpaulia .  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 347–355.  相似文献

Metagentiana striata is an alpine annual herbaceous plant endemic to the east of the Qinghai–Tibet (Q–T) Plateau and adjacent areas. The phylogeography of M. striata was studied by sequencing the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) trn S– trn G intergenic spacer. Ten haplotypes were identified from an investigation of 232 individuals of M. striata from 14 populations covering the entire geographical range of this species. The level of differentiation amongst populations was very high ( G ST = 0.746; N ST = 0.774) and a significant phylogeographical structure was observed ( P  < 0.05). An analysis of molecular variance found a high variation amongst populations (76%), with F ST = 0.762 (highly significant, P  < 0.001), indicating that little gene flow occurred amongst the different regions; this was explained by the isolation of populations by high mountains along the Q–T Plateau and adjacent areas ( N m = 0.156). Only one ancestral haplotype (A) was common and widespread throughout the distributional range of M. striata. The populations of the Hengduan Mountains region of the south-eastern Q–T Plateau showed high diversity and uniqueness of haplotypes. It is suggested that this region was the potential refugium of M. striata during the Quaternary glaciation, and that interglacial and postglacial range expansion occurred from this refugium. This scenario was in good agreement with the results of nested clade analysis, which inferred that the current spatial distribution of cpDNA haplotypes and populations resulted from range expansion, together with past allopatric fragmentation events.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 125–140.  相似文献

The effect of feeding level ( F L; 0·5 to 4% dry diet mass per wet fish body mass) and feeding frequency (once every 4 days to twice per day) on postprandial metabolic response was investigated in southern catfish Silurus meridionalis at 27·5° C. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the specific dynamic action (SDA) coefficient among the groups of different feeding levels ( P  > 0·05). The duration increased from 26·0 to 40·0 h and the peak metabolic rate increased from 207·8 to 378·8 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 when the feeding level was increased from 0·5 to 4%. The relationship between the peak metabolic rate ( R P, mg O2 kg−1 h−1) and F L could be described as: R P = 175·4 + 47·3 F L( r 2 = 0·943, n  = 40, P  < 0·001). The relationship between the SDA duration ( D , h) and F L could be described as D =30·97 F L0·248 ( r 2=0·729, n =40, P  < 0·001).  相似文献

Routine oxygen consumption ( M o 2) was 35% higher in 1 day starved and 21% higher in 4 day starved adult transgenic coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch relative to end of migration ocean-ranched coho salmon. Critical swimming speed ( U crit) and M o 2 at U crit ( M o 2max) were significantly lower in 4 day starved transgenic coho salmon (1·25 BL s−1; 8·79 mg O2 kg−1 min−1) compared to ocean-ranched coho salmon (1·60 BL s−1; 9·87 mg O2 kg−1 min−1). Transgenic fish swam energetically less efficiently than ocean-ranched fish, as indicated by a poorer swimming economy at U crit ( M o 2max     ). Although M o 2max was lower in transgenic coho salmon, the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) measured during the first 20 min of recovery was significantly larger in transgenic coho salmon (44·1 mg O2 kg−1) compared with ocean-ranched coho salmon (34·2 mg O2 kg−1), which had a faster rate of recovery.  相似文献

Allozymic and morphometric studies were carried out on ten populations of Syngonanthus mucugensis (Eriocaulaceae), a species from north-eastern Brazil threatened by extinction. Genetic and morphological variability was low or moderately low in all populations, being lower in populations from Rio de Contas/Catolés ( P L = 14.3–21.4, A  = 1.1–1.2, H e = 0.026–0.059, D2M = 26.893–33.157) than in those from Mucugê ( P L = 28.6–35.7, A  = 1.3–1.5, H e = 0.078–0.164, D2M = 28.999–45.077). A high coefficient of endogamy ( F is = 0.257) was found, which can be explained by the reproductive characteristics and distribution of the species. The values for genetic and morphological structuring ( F st = 0.512 and A MRPP = 0.175, respectively) were high as a result of the differentiation between populations from the two areas. The mean genetic identity between populations from the two areas (0.812) was much lower than between populations from the same area (Mucugê, 0.980; Rio de Contas/Catolés, 0.997). These results indicate that we are dealing with two distinct taxa and, as a result of the nature of the morphological differences found, a new subspecies is described for the populations of the region of Rio de Contas and Catolés, Syngonanthus mucugensis ssp. riocontensis . Such conclusions raise important implications for the conservation of Syngonanthus mucugensis , and will be used in the drawing up of management plans for its conservation.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 401–416.  相似文献

We explored the factors that explain the variation in resting metabolic rates (RMR) in growing amniotes by using the phylogenetic comparative method. For this, we measured raw RMR (mL O2 h−1), body mass, body mass growth rate, and periosteal bone growth rate in a sample of 44 growing individuals belonging to 13 species of amniotes. We performed variation partitioning analyses, which showed that phylogeny explains a significant fraction of the variation of mass-specific RMR (mL O2 h−1 g−1), and that the cost of growth is much higher than the cost of maintenance. Moreover, we tested the hypothesis of the independence of energy allocation, and found that maintenance metabolism and growth rates are not significantly related. Finally, we calculated the statistical parameters of the relationship between geometry-corrected RMR (mL O2 h−1 g−0.67) and bone growth rate. This relationship could potentially be used in palaeobiology to infer RMR from bone tissue samples of fossil species by assuming Amprino's rule (according to which bone tissue types reflect bone growth rates). These estimates would be especially interesting for Mesozoic non-avian theropod dinosaurs and Permian and Triassic therapsids to investigate, respectively, the origin of avian and mammalian endothermy.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 63–76.  相似文献

The mean rate of oxygen consumption (routine respiration rate, R R, mg O2 fish−1 h−1), measured for individual or small groups of haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus (3–12 cm standard length, L S) maintained for 5 days within flow‐through respiratory chambers at four different temperatures, increased with increasing dry mass ( M D). The relationship between R R and M D was allometric ( R R = α  M b ) with b values of 0·631, 0·606, 0·655 and 0·650 at 5·0, 8·0, 12·0 and 15·0° C, respectively. The effect of temperature ( T ) and M D on mean R R was described by     indicating a Q 10 of 2·27 between 5 and 15° C. Juvenile haddock routine metabolic scope, calculated as the ratio of the mean of highest and lowest deciles of R R measured in each chamber, significantly decreased with temperature such that the routine scope at 15° C was half that at 5° C. The cost of feeding ( R SDA) was c . 3% of consumed food energy, a value half that found for larger gadoid juveniles and adults.  相似文献

Abstract:  The study examines interspecific interactions between Bemisia tabaci (Hem., Aleyrodidae) and Liriomyza sativae (Dipt., Agromyzidae) feeding on pumpkins and cucumbers. L. sativae density on control pumpkins and cucumbers peaked 3 and 2 weeks after adults were seen, respectively. Compared with controls, L. sativae densities observed for weeks 3–6 and 2–6 in the B. tabaci -pre-infested plants were significantly lower, respectively ( F 2.00 = 22.66, P < 0.01). The survival of L. sativae larvae transplanted to B. tabaci -pre-infested pumpkins and cucumbers was 16.06%, 10.02% and 13.09%, 9.21%, whereas those transplanted to control plants were 52.20%, 36.06% and 48.25%, 28.22% after 5 and 10 days, respectively ( χ 2 = 6.9, d.f. = 1, P < 0.01). Pupation rates of L. sativae feeding on control plants were 20.25% and 16.45%, whereas those feeding on the B. tabaci -pre-infested plants only 4.08% and 4.21%, respectively ( χ 2 = 7.0, d.f. = 1, P < 0.01). The length and number of mines of L. sativae on the control pumpkins and cucumbers were 54.05%, 54.10% and 89.06%, 76.22% longer or higher than those on B. tabaci -pre-infested plants, respectively. Leaf positions of L. sativae feeding on the plants were also affected by B. tabaci -pre-infested. These results showed that B. tabaci infestations had a significantly negative effect on L. sativae when they were feeding simultaneously on the same host plant.  相似文献

All extant populations of Hebe speciosa (Plantaginaceae), a threatened endemic New Zealand shrub, were investigated using the amplified fragment length polymorphism technique (AFLP). Genetic diversity indices varied significantly among geographical regions and were positively correlated with population size. Among-population genetic differentiation was high (mean pairwise ΦST = 0.47), implying complex historical relationships between disjunct populations and negligible contemporary gene flow. Southern populations exhibited extremely low genetic diversity relative to those found in Northland, suggesting that these populations may be more recent in origin. Patterns of genetic relationship among some populations indicate pre-European Māori dispersal and cultivation. The three northernmost populations were found to contain the majority of the species' remaining genetic diversity and thus, should be a focus for future conservation management. Some southern sites may also be culturally significant as evidence of Māori trade and cultivation of Hebe speciosa .  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 149 , 229–239.  相似文献

Allozyme diversity was evaluated in four closely-related taxa of the Delphinium series Fissa distributed throughout the Western Mediterranean area. All are considered threatened plants. Delphinium bolosii and Delphinium mansanetianum are narrowly endemic to the Eastern Iberian Peninsula, whereas Delphinium fissum ssp. sordidum is found in a few populations across the Peninsula. Delphinium fissum ssp. fissum is more widely distributed but often in small and isolated populations. In this group, Delphinium bolosii is dysploid (2 n  = 18) whereas the other taxa are diploid (2 n  = 16). A total of 12 populations were surveyed, including all known locations for D. bolosii , D. mansanetianum , and D. fissum ssp. sordidum . Eleven enzyme systems were assayed and 15 loci were resolved. Markedly depauperate values for genetic diversity were obtained for D. mansanetianum ( H e = 0.013) and D. fissum ssp. sordidum ( H e = 0.044). The estimates for D. fissum ssp. fissum ( H e = 0.071) were below the values expected for widespread species. Small population size and marginal distribution have probably contributed to the low variability observed in this group. By contrast, D. bolosii exhibited comparatively larger populations and greater genetic diversity ( H e = 0.138). We suggest that, apart from population size and local adaptation, genetic diversity during speciation may have been promoted by dysploidy through genomic recombination.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 773–784.  相似文献

Resting spore formation of some aphid-pathogenic Entomophthorales is important for the seasonal pattern of their prevalence and survival but this process is poorly understood. To explore the possible mechanism involved in the process, Pandora nouryi (obligate aphid pathogen) interacted with green peach aphid Myzus persicae on cabbage leaves under favourable conditions. Host nymphs showered with primary conidia of an isolate (LC50: 0.9–6.7 conidia mm−2 4–7 days post shower) from air captures in the low-latitude plateau of China produced resting spores (azygospores), primary conidia or both spore types. Surprisingly, the proportion of mycosed cadavers forming resting spores ( P cfrs ) increased sharply within the concentrations ( C ) of 28–240 conidia mm−2, retained high levels at 240–1760, but was zero or extremely low at 0.3–16. The P cfrs – C relationship fit well the logistic equation P cfrs  = 0.6774/[1 + exp(3.1229–0.0270 C )] ( r 2 = 0.975). This clarified for the first time the dependence of in vivo resting spore formation of P. nouryi upon the concentration of infective inoculum. A hypothesis is thus proposed that some sort of biochemical signals may exist in the host–pathogen interaction so that the fungal pathogen perceives the signals for prompt response to forthcoming host-density changes by either producing conidia for infecting available hosts or forming resting spores for surviving host absence in situ .  相似文献
