Animal mating signals evolve in part through indirect natural selection on anatomical traits that influence signal expression. In songbirds, for example, natural selection on beak form and function can influence the evolution of song features, because of the role of the beak in song production. In this study we characterize the relationship between beak morphology and song features within a bimodal population of Geospiza fortis on Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos. This is the only extant population of Darwin's finches that is known to possess a bimodal distribution in beak size. We test the hypothesis that birds with larger beaks are constrained to produce songs with lower frequencies and decreased vocal performance. We find that birds with longer, deeper, and wider beaks produce songs with significantly lower minimum frequencies, maximum frequencies and frequency bandwidths. Results from the analysis of the relationship between beak morphology and trill rate are mixed. Measures of beak morphology correlated positively with 'vocal deviation', a composite index of vocal performance. Overall these results support a resonance model of vocal tract function, and suggest that beak morphology, a primary target of ecological selection in Darwin's finches, affects the evolution of mating signals. We suggest that differences in song between the two modes of the distribution may influence mate recognition and perhaps facilitate assortative mating by beak size and population divergence.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 489–498.  相似文献

The evolution of aquatic prey-capture strategies in snakes has been suggested as a model system for the study of convergence. However, hypotheses of correlated evolution of prey-capture strategy with different aspects of foraging niche have never been tested quantitatively. Whereas a considerable amount of data is available for North American species, data for European species are scarce. In this study we combine original data on prey-capture strategies and strike velocities for European natricines with data for North American Natricinae obtained from the literature. We did not find any evidence for correlated evolution between prey-capture strategy and strike velocity with diet, but there was a significant correlation with prey density. Thus, our study suggests that prey density, rather than diet, played an important role in the evolution of the different prey-capture strategies and strike velocities of natricine snakes.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 73–83.  相似文献

Meiotic drive is an evolutionary force in which natural selection is uncoupled from organismal fitness. Recently, it has been proposed that meiotic drive and genetic drift represent major forces in the evolution of the mammalian karyotype. Meiotic drive involves two types of genetic elements, Responders and Distorters , the latter being required to induce transmission ratio distortion at the former. We have previously described the Om meiotic drive system in mouse chromosome 11. To investigate the natural history of this drive system we have characterized the alleles present at the distorter in wild-derived inbred strains. Our analysis of transmission of maternal alleles in both classical and wild-derived inbred strains indicated that driving alleles are found at high frequency in natural populations and that the existence of driving alleles predates the split between the Mus spicilegus and M. musculus lineages.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 487–492.  相似文献

Previous studies on the geographical distributions of both shell polymorphisms and mitochondrial haplotypes in Cepaea land snails have suggested varying contributions of natural selection, random genetic drift and population history to the origin and persistence of variation. We combine previous studies of polymorphism within two species of Cepaea , with new molecular data from two mitochondrial genes. The distributions of mitochondrial variants suggest that elements of population history may have been influential in creating patterns of diversity. However, some patterns of amino acid substitution that are found in a protein coding gene are also consistent with the action of diversifying selection. This suggests the possibility that in addition to stochastic processes such as repeated founder events, local extinctions and random genetic drift within a structured population, adaptive molecular change may have affected mitochondrial diversity.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2006, 87 , 167–184.  相似文献

Previous research on developmentally plastic responses by reptile embryos has paid relatively little attention to tropical species, or to possible interactions between the effects of thermal and hydric regimes. In the present study, eggs of keelback snakes ( Tropidonophis mairii ), from a tropical area with strong temporal and spatial variation in soil temperatures and moisture levels, were incubated. The phenotypic traits of hatchling snakes (body size, shape, muscular strength) were affected by moisture content of the incubation medium (vermiculite plus 100% vs. 50% water by mass), by mean incubation temperatures (25.7 vs. 27.9 °C) and by diel thermal variation (diel range 6.0 vs. 8.4 °C). Interactions between these factors were negligible. Cooler, more thermostable, moister conditions resulted in larger offspring, a trait under strong selection in this population. Thermal and hydric conditions covary in potential nest-sites (e.g. deeper nests are more thermostable as well as moister). This covariation may influence the evolution of reaction norms for embryogenesis. For example, if moister nests enhance offspring fitness and are cooler, then selection will favour the ability to develop in cool as well as moist conditions. Thus, the evolution of optimal incubation conditions with respect to one variable (e.g. temperature) may be driven by patterns of association with another variable (e.g. soil moisture) among natural nest-sites. Perhaps for this reason, the thermal optimum for incubation is surprisingly low in this tropical species.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 89 , 159–168.  相似文献

This study highlights the morphological differences between two groups of plants; those that are recorded as hosts of the thrips Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis (Bouché) and those that remain free from infestation. Scanning electron microscope techniques were used to describe the morphology of the leaf surface of 19 species in order to help identify which morphological features could play a role in the selection of plant species by thrips from among a diverse botanical collection. H. haemorrhoidalis had a preference for species with leaves that were coriaceous, with one or both surfaces being smooth. Plants evading these thrips commonly possessed glandular trichomes. Thus morphology may have a role in deterring thrips from the leaf surface, as well as influencing the behaviour of predators that control thrips. Further detailed studies into the chemistry of leaves of hosts and nonhost species may help to further our understanding of selection mechanisms.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 152 , 109–130.  相似文献

Selection pressure by natural enemies on phytophagous insect larvae is intense and has frequently triggered the evolution of chemical defence as an effective counterstrategy. In the chrysomelid subfamily Galerucinae, glandular structures and defensive fluids have been described for the tribe Sermylini Wilcox, 1965. Previous morphological and ultrastructural studies raised doubts that these defensive devices in Sermylini can be traced back to a common origin. The taxonomy of the Galerucinae cannot clear these doubts because the phylogeny of this taxon is a matter of current debate. We therefore investigated the phylogeny of the Galerucinae based on approximately 1740 bp of the mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA and the nuclear elongation factor 1 alpha genes. Our data support the hypothesized close relationship between the subfamilies Galerucinae and Alticinae, yet, by contrast to other recent analyses, the two groups are mostly resolved as monophyletic sister groups or, in some analyses, with the Galerucinae nested paraphyletically within the Alticinae. Within the subfamily Galerucinae, only the tribe Galerucini formed a monophyletic taxon, except for one species, Cerochroa brachialis Stal, 1858. In none of our analyses were the Sermylini recovered as a monophyletic tribe. However, our data support monophyly of each of the three groups within the Sermylini that have morphologically distinguishable larval defensive openings. We conclude that the defensive structures in larvae of Sermylini have no common origin, but evolved independently. Our data suggest that the tremendous selection pressure by natural enemies led to the recurrent evolution of similar chemical defensive devices in Sermylini larvae.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 165–175.  相似文献

The endemic land snail genus Mandarina of the oceanic Bonin Islands shows exceptionally diverse morphological and ecological traits. Previous studies have already provided evidence that speciation on different islands of the three main archipelagos was such that similar ecotypes evolved independently in different lineages and islands. Here we present data to show that the same species can have different ecotypes. As most of the characters involved are inherited, then variation between ecotypes must represent genetic differences between populations. We then show that the radiation on the Bonin Islands is derived from a single colonization event, and use a mitochondrial phylogeny to provide evidence for a burst of cladogenesis soon after colonization. As divergent selection has previously been implicated in causing differences between Mandarina species, and theory predicts that most of the speciation should have taken place early in their history, then the study adds to the evidence for an adaptive radiation by ecological speciation in Mandarina . However, while the diversity of ecotypes present at each site is dependent on the regime of natural selection and competition, geography still must have an important role.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 269–282.  相似文献

Hybridization in the evolution of animal form and life-cycle   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Examples of animal development that pose problems for Darwinian evolution by 'descent with modification' but are consistent with 'larval transfer' are discussed. Larval transfer claims that genes that prescribe larval forms originated in adults in other taxa, and have been transferred by hybridization. I now suggest that not only larvae but also components of animals have been transferred by hybridization. The ontogeny of some Cambrian metazoans without true larvae is discussed. The probable sequence of acquisition of larvae by hemichordates and echinoderms is presented. I contend (1) that there were no true larvae until after the establishment of classes in the respective phyla, (2) that early animals hybridized to produce chimeras of parts of dissimilar species, (3) that the Cambrian explosion resulted from many such hybridizations, and (4) that modern animal phyla and classes were produced by such early hybridizations, rather than by the gradual accumulation of specific differences.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 148 , 585–602.  相似文献

Natural and sexual selection can have either opposing or synergistic effects on the evolution of traits. In the green swordtail Xiphophorus helleri , sexual selection arising from female choice is known to favour larger males and males with longer swords. We examined variation in male and female size and fin morphology among 15 populations that varied in their predation environments. Males and females from populations in which piscivorous fishes were present had longer and deeper bodies than did males and females from populations in which piscivorous fishes were absent. Controlling for a positive effect of body size on sword length, males from populations in which piscivores were present had relatively shorter swords than did males from populations in which piscivores were absent. The associations between morphology and predation environment may be due to direct effects of predation, indirect effects of predation, other sources of selection that covary with predator presence, or other environmental effects on trait expression. These results suggest that while sexual selection favours longer swords, natural selection may have an opposing effect on sword length in populations with predators. Natural selection on body size, however, may act synergistically with sexual selection in populations with predators; both may favour the evolution of larger body size. The body size results for X. helleri contrast with related taxa that have become model systems for the study of life history evolution.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 87–100.  相似文献

A phylogenetic approach was performed to infer whether variation in conspicuous colour-patterns of a poison frog (Dendrobatidae: Dendrobates tinctorius ) has evolved neutrally or under selection. Colour and pattern were split into components that were separately analysed and subsequently re-grouped via principal component analysis. This revealed four different 'displayed' factors on the dorsal and lateral views versus one 'concealed' factor on the ventral view. Based on the assumption that current patterns of trait variation contain information about the evolutionary history of the phenotype, we correlated these trait components to a neutrally evolving gene fragment (cytochrome b ). The concealed factor was significantly correlated with the marker fragment, which identified it as having evolved under genetic drift. Noncorrelation of all displayed factors with the marker may indicate the evolution of colour patterns on dorsum and flanks under selection. In our example, colour pattern should therefore be regarded as a multicomponent signal system.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 433–444.  相似文献

It is now widely recognized that sexual selection has been important in the rapid and divergent evolution of male genital morphology. However, distinguishing among putative mechanisms of sexual selection acting on male genital morphology represents a considerable challenge. Although there is growing evidence that variation in the size and/or shape of male genital structures can determine a male's success in gaining fertilizations, our knowledge of the functional morphology of male genitalia remains limited. Here we examine the functional morphology of genital sclerites that are known to influence paternity in the dung beetle Onthophagus taurus . We show that three of the sclerites form a functionally integrated unit that generates the tubular-shaped spermatophore and delivers its opening to the female's spermathecal duct. A fourth sclerite acts as a holdfast device during copulation. Our observations shed light on the mechanism by which these sclerites influence a male's paternity, and their patterns of phenotypic and genetic (co)variation.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 257–266.  相似文献

Modern herbicides greatly contribute to world agricultural production but their sustainability is threatened by the widespread evolution of herbicide resistant weedy plant populations. Despite the commercial and scientific importance of resistance, there has not been an experimental model system for pro-actively evaluating the potential for herbicide resistance evolution. Here, utilizing the rapidly growing, unicellular photosynthetic microalgae Chlamydomona s reinhardtii (Dangeard), a ratchet protocol has been developed that solves the problem of maintaining both large populations and strong herbicide selection. The ratchet protocol is a progressive set of cycles, each cycle commencing with a population of approximately one million individuals apportioned amongst three herbicide doses for 14 days. Whenever the evolving population demonstrates growth across the three herbicide selection intensities, then the population ratchets to the next cycle of higher herbicide dose. Therefore, by always maintaining large populations under selection pressure, this system offers the opportunity for beneficial mutations to arise and be enriched. Using the well-characterized atrazine herbicide, the ratchet protocol resulted in rapid evolution of populations with different levels of resistance. This robust laboratory based Chlamydomonas system is proposed for application in establishing the respective propensity for resistance evolution to herbicides or other selecting agents.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 257–266.  相似文献

The evolution of viviparity in squamates has been the focus of much scientific attention in previous years. In particular, the possibility of the transition from viviparity back to oviparity has been the subject of a vigorous debate. Some studies have suggested this reversal is more frequent than previously thought. However, none of them provide conclusive evidence. We investigated this problem by studying the phylogenetic relationships between oviparous and viviparous lineages of the reproductively bimodal lizard species Zootoca vivipara . Our results show that viviparous populations are not monophyletic, and that several evolutionary transitions in parity mode have occurred. The most parsimonious scenario involves a single origin of viviparity followed by a reversal back to oviparity. This is the first study with a strongly supported phylogenetic framework supporting a transition from viviparity to oviparity.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 87 , 1–11.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers and measurements were recorded in 47 individuals of ten taxa of Primula , representing eight species and two subspecies from ten populations. The basic numbers of chromosomes were x  = 8, 9 or 11, and they were mostly metacentric, medium-long to medium-small, ranging in length from c . 3.6 µm to 1.6 µm. Diploid chromosome numbers of 2 n  = 2 x  = 24 and 22 were scored for the first time in P. loeseneri Kitag. and P. prenantha Balf. & Sm., respectively. A new ploidy level of 2 n  = 4 x  = 44 was found in P. burmanica Balf. & King. The recorded diploid numbers of the remaining species confirmed earlier reports. Interspecific variability in chromosome numbers was correlated with heterogeneity in their mean length. Comparison of the data with those in the literature revealed that the observed variability of chromosomal characters was compatible with the other taxonomic criteria and supports the current taxonomic delimitation. Chromosomal variation at the diploid level is the predominant feature in Primula evolution, and allopatric speciation has played a major role in its specific diversity. Subgen. Aleuritia could represent the main clade from which the other subgenera have evolved. The origin of the chromosome numbers, geographical distribution and evolution of the species were assessed, and the parallel polyphyletic mode of evolution in the genus was confirmed.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 150 , 211–219.  相似文献

Micromorphological characters of the fruiting bodies, such as ascus-type and hymenial amyloidity, and secondary chemistry have been widely employed as key characters in Ascomycota classification. However, the evolution of these characters has yet not been studied using molecular phylogenies. We have used a combined Bayesian and maximum likelihood based approach to trace character evolution on a tree inferred from a combined analysis of nuclear and mitochondrial ribosomal DNA sequences. The maximum likelihood aspect overcomes simplifications inherent in maximum parsimony methods, whereas the Markov chain Monte Carlo aspect renders results independent of any particular phylogenetic tree. The results indicate that the evolution of the two chemical characters is quite different, being stable once developed for the medullary lecanoric acid, whereas the cortical chlorinated xanthones appear to have been lost several times. The current ascus-types and the amyloidity of the hymenial gel in Pertusariaceae appear to have been developed within the family. The basal ascus-type of pertusarialean fungi remains unknown.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 89 , 615–626.  相似文献

Insect genitals vary greatly among species and provide a key tool for species-level taxonomy. Insects differing in the genitalia are often treated as discrete, reproductively isolated species. This principle dates back to the lock-and-key hypothesis, which states that genitalia vary between species in order to provide a mechanical reproductive isolation system. Thus, the hypothesis assumes low within-species variability in genital traits. However, recent studies suggest that sexual selection may be responsible for the evolution of insect genitalia. We studied allometry and genital size and shape variation in a dimorphic moth Selenia tetralunaria . We found that the genitalia showed negative allometry in relation to body size as reported in many insect and spider species. This allometry was stronger in internal genital structures than it was in external genitalia. We also found that there was more variation in internal compared with external genitalia. Finally, we found that the shape of genital structures differed between morphs in all three examined areas. S. tetralunaria is among the first reported cases of genitally dimorphic insect species. Considerable variation in internal genitalia and especially the presence of genital shape differences between morphs were not consistent with the predictions of the lock-and-key hypothesis.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 87 , 297–307.  相似文献

The Loranthaceae is the largest plant family with aerial branch parasites termed mistletoes. Three genera of Loranthaceae are terrestrial root parasites and the remaining 72 genera are aerial parasites. Several characters, including habit, haustorial type, germination pattern, pollen morphology, chromosome number, inflorescence morphology and flower merosity, fusion, symmetry and size, are considered to reflect evolutionary relationships within the family. Convergence is a common evolutionary pattern and can confound interpretations of evolution. We investigated character evolution by mapping character states onto a phylogenetic tree based on the nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL–trnF regions. Convergences in form were found in several characters, including habit, haustorial type, flower symmetry and merosity. These convergences typically correspond to ecological parameters such as pollination syndrome or stresses associated with the canopy habit. Other characters such as chromosome number and germination pattern illustrate divergent evolution among clades.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 150 , 101–113.  相似文献

Resource availability, predation, and sexual selection have all been shown to play an important role in the ecology and evolution of guppies, Poecilia reticulata , but the role of parasitism has received comparatively little attention. In the present study, we examined natural infection levels of wild-caught guppies from the Upper and Lower Aripo River in Trinidad (UA and LA, respectively) and experimentally infected a subsample of fish with an isogenic line of the ectoparasite Gyrodactylus turnbulli . LA fish showed a superior resistance compared to UA guppies during the primary, but not secondary infection 53 days later. Resistance of LA individuals was consistent across experiments, suggesting immunocompetence has a heritable genetic basis. The efficiency of the immune response of UA fish was not correlated across infections. During primary infections, UA fish were highly susceptible, but their resistance was significantly improved during a secondary infection, highlighting the importance of acquired resistance. We discuss the role of innate and acquired resistance, and place our findings in the context of natural gyrodactylid infections. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 90 , 647–655.  相似文献

Iliamna corei and I. remota are classified as endangered species; however, their designation as separate species has been questioned. In order to address this problem, intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) data were generated to examine patterns of genetic differentiation within and between these two taxa. ISSRs were used to screen individuals for genetic diversity of I. corei from the single known natural population and two garden populations, and individuals of I. remota from the six natural populations and four garden populations. Using ten primers, 140 informative markers were generated. Ninety-four percent of loci detected revealed polymorphisms. Cluster analysis (neighbour-joining, NJ) revealed that the two species are genetically distinct and that the Illinois populations of I. remota were genetically distinct from the Virginia populations of I. remota . Ordination by Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA) supported the findings of the NJ, with a separation of I. corei and I. remota . Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) revealed that the majority of variation detected was within populations, which is consistent with other self-incompatible plants. The results indicate a correlation between the geographical distributions of the species and gene flow.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 345–354.  相似文献
