A pot experiment was carried out with tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cv. “Target F1” in a mixture of peat, perlite, and sand (1:1:1) to investigate the effects of supplementary calcium sulphate on plants grown at high NaCl concentration (75 mM). The treatments were: (i) control (C), nutrient solution alone; (ii) salt treatment (C + S), 75 mM NaCl; (iii) salt plus calcium treatment 1 (C + S + Ca1), 75 mM NaCl plus additional mixture of 2.5 mM CaSO4 in nutrient solution; (iv) salt plus calcium treatment 2 (C + S + Ca2), 75 mM NaCl plus additional mixture of 5 mM CaSO4 in nutrient solution. The plants grown under salt stress produced low dry matter, fruit weight, and relative water content than those grown in standard nutrient solution. Supplemental calcium sulphate added to nutrient solution containing salt significantly improved growth and physiological variables affected by salt stress (e.g. plant growth, fruit yield, and membrane permeability) and also increased leaf K+, Ca2+, and N in tomato plants. The effects of supplemental CaSO4 in maintaining membrane permeability, increasing concentrations of Ca2+, N, and K+ and reducing concentration of Na+ (because of cation competition in root zone) in leaves could offer an economical and simple solution to tomato crop production problems caused by high salinity.  相似文献

Quantity and quality of irrigation water are considered the most imperative limiting factors for plant production in arid environment. Adoptions of strategies can minimize crop water consumption while nonexistent yield reduction is considered challenge for scholars especially in arid environment. Grafting is regarded as a promising tool to avoid or reduce yield loss caused by abiotic stresses. Tomato (Solanum lycopersium Mill.), commercial cultivar Faridah was grafted on Unifort rootstock and grown under regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) (100%, 80% and 60% ETc), using two types of irrigation water, fresh (EC = 0.86 dS/m) and brackish (EC = 3.52 dS/m). The effects of grafting and RDI on water use efficiency, vegetative growth, yield, fruit quality were investigated. Plant vegetative growth was reduced under water and salinity stresses. Grafting the plant significantly improves the vegetative growth under both conditions. The results showed that crop yield, Ca+2 and K+ were considerably increased in grafted tomato compared to non-grafted plants under water and salinity stresses. Grafted tomato plants accumulated less Na+ and Cl, especially under high levels of salinity compared to non-grafted plants. Grafting tomato plants showed a slight decrease on the fruit quality traits such as vitamin C, titratable acidity (TA) and total soluble solids (TSS). This study confirmed that grafted tomato plants can mitigate undesirable impact of salt stress on growth and fruit quality.  相似文献

Field trials were carried out to evaluate six treatments combining biological agents and chemical fungicides applied via chemigation against white mold (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) on processing tomatoes. The experiment was performed in Goiânia, Brazil, with tomato hybrid Heinz 7155 in 2009 and 2010 in a field previously infested with S. sclerotiorum sclerotia. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design in a 2 × 3 factorial structure (with and without Trichoderma spp. 1.0 × 109 viable conidia mL−1 ha−1) × fluazinam (1.0 L ha−1), procimidone (1.5 L ha−1) and control, applied by drip irrigation. Treatments were applied three times 10 days apart, starting one month after transplanting. Each treatment consisted of plots with three 72-meter rows with four plants m−1 and 1.5 m spacing between rows, with three replications. Based on disease incidence evaluated weekly, the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was obtained. Yield and its components were evaluated in addition to fruit pH and °Brix. Results were subjected to ANOVA, Scott-Knott (5%), and regression analysis. Biocontrol using Trichoderma spp. via chemigation singly or in combination with synthetic fungicides fluazinam and procimidone reduced AUDPC and increased fruit yield up to 25 t ha−1. The best treatment for controlling white mold also increased pulp yield around 1.0 and 7.0 t ha−1 in 2009 and 2010, respectively. The present work demonstrated the advantages of white mold biological control in processing tomato crops, where drip irrigation favored Trichoderma spp. delivery close to the plants and to the inoculum source.  相似文献

Growth at elevated CO2 often decreases photosynthetic capacity (acclimation) and leaf N concentrations. Lower-shaded canopy leaves may undergo both CO2 and shade acclimation. The relationship of acclimatory responses of flag and lower-shaded canopy leaves of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to the N content, and possible factors affecting N gain and distribution within the plant were investigated in a wheat crop growing in field chambers set at ambient (360 μmol mol−1) and elevated (700 μmol mol−1) CO2, and with two amounts of N fertilizer (none and 70 kg ha−1 applied on 30 April). Photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration at a common measurement CO2, chlorophyll and Rubisco levels of upper-sunlit (flag) and lower-shaded canopy leaves were significantly lower in elevated relative to ambient CO2-grown plants. Both whole shoot N and leaf N per unit area decreased at elevated CO2, and leaf N declined with canopy position. Acclimatory responses to elevated CO2 were enhanced in N-deficient plants. With N supply, the acclimatory responses were less pronounced in lower canopy leaves relative to the flag leaf. Additional N did not increase the fraction of shoot N allocated to the flag and penultimate leaves. The decrease in photosynthetic capacity in both upper-sunlit and lower-shaded leaves in elevated CO2 was associated with a decrease in N contents in above-ground organs and with lower N partitioning to leaves. A single relationship of N per unit leaf area to the transpiration rate accounted for a significant fraction of the variation among sun-lit and shaded leaves, growth CO2 level and N supply. We conclude that reduced stomatal conductance and transpiration can decrease plant N, leading to acclimation to CO2 enrichment.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of seed presoaking of shikimic acid (30, 60 and 120 ppm) on growth parameters, fruit productivity and quality, transpiration rate, photosynthetic pigments and some mineral nutrition contents of tomato plants. Shikimic acid at all concentrations significantly increased fresh and dry weights, fruit number, average fresh and dry fruit yield, vitamin C, lycopene, carotenoid contents, total acidity and fruit total soluble sugars of tomato plants when compared to control plants. Seed pretreatment with shikimic acid at various doses induces a significant increase in total leaf conductivity, transpiration rate and photosynthetic pigments (Chl. a, chl. b and carotenoids) of tomato plants. Furthermore, shikimic acid at various doses applied significantly increased the concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in tomato leaves as compared to control non-treated tomato plants. Among all doses of shikimic acid treatment, it was found that 60 ppm treatment caused a marked increase in growth, fruit productivity and quality and most studied parameters of tomato plants when compared to other treatments. On the other hand, no significant differences were observed in total photosynthetic pigments, concentrations of nitrogen and potassium in leaves of tomato plants treated with 30 ppm of shikimic acid and control plants. According to these results, it could be suggested that shikimic acid used for seed soaking could be used for increasing growth, fruit productivity and quality of tomato plants growing under field conditions.  相似文献

Helicoverpa armigera, an important polyphagous insect pest in agriculture, attacks more than 200 plant species of more than 30 families. Our previous study showed that the choice feeding percentages of H. armigera larvae to tobacco leaf discs treated with sweet, bitter, and hot taste substances were higher than the control leaf discs, while numb and salty substances could significantly inhibit their feeding. To quantitatively determine the synergistic effect of numb and salty substances, in this paper, the antifeeding activities of numb and salty substances and their mixtures blended in different doses or volume ratios were assayed on H. armigera larvae. The first bioassay was designed to elucidate the relative feeding preference of the larvae to the leaves from several common host species, each paired with tobacco leaf discs, and the result indicated that the most preferred host leaf by the larvae was tobacco leaf, followed by cotton and peanut leaves, suggesting that tobacco leaf was the most suitable matrix for the antifeeding bioassay, and the larval consumption of maize, pepper, or tomato leaves were significantly lower than that of tobacco leaf. The second bioassay was to test the choice feeding response of H. armigera larvae to tobacco leaf discs treated with Zanthoxylum bungeanum extracts obtained with different solvents, and the result showed that the antifeeding activity of the alcohol extracts was the strongest (93.38%), and the leaf consumption in the treatment and the control showed extremely significant difference (t = 4.23, t0.01 = 3.25, P = 0.0022), followed by the dichloromethane extracts (47.64%), while the other three solvents (water, acetone, and n-hexane) could not extract the active antifeeding components from Z. bungeanum. The larval consumption of tobacco leaf discs treated with the alcohol extracts of Z. bungeanum and NaCl solution were significantly less than their corresponding controls. The mean larval consumption of the treated leaf discs decreased with ever-increasing dosage, and the consumption of tobacco leaf discs coated with different doses of alcohol extracts of Z. bungeanum or NaCl solution showed extremely significant difference (Falcohol extract of Z. bungeanum = 3.88, F0.01 = 3.58, P = 0.0064; FNaCl solution = 54.29, F0.01 = 3.58, P = 0.0000), with maximum antifeeding effects at a dosage of 30 μL per 1.5 cm ID leaf disc. We further tested the larval consumption of tobacco leaf discs treated with alcohol extracts of Z. bungeanum in saturated NaCl solution mixed in different volume ratios, and the result showed that the choice antifeeding percentages of the treatments with 15 μL or more Z. bungeanum alcohol extracts were higher than 90%, among which the mixture with 25:15 volume ratio of Z. bungeanum alcohol extracts and saturated NaCl solution exhibited the strongest antifeeding activity, and the mean consumed leaf area of tobacco leaf discs coated with this blend was only 0.10 mm2. In the further test on feeding dose-response of the 25:15 mixture, the mean leaf consumption decreased linearly with ever-increasing dosage, with a regression equation y = ?3.9356x + 120.78(R2 = 0.9998), and the 30 μL dose could completely inhibit H. armigera feeding.  相似文献

Retrieving leaf chlorophyll content at a range of spatio-temporal scales is central to monitoring vegetation productivity, identifying physiological stress and managing biological resources. However, estimating leaf chlorophyll over broad spatial extents using ground-based traditional methods is time and resource heavy. Satellite-derived spectral vegetation indices (VIs) are commonly used to estimate leaf chlorophyll content, however they are often developed and tested on broadleaf species. Relatively little research has assessed VIs for different leaf structures, particularly needle leaves which represent a large component of boreal forest and significant global ecosystems. This study tested the performance of 47 published VIs for estimating foliar chlorophyll content from different leaf and canopy structures (broadleaf and needle). Coniferous and deciduous sites were selected in Ontario, Canada, representing different dominant vegetation species (Picea mariana and Acer saccharum) and a variety of canopy structures. Leaf reflectance data was collected using an ASD Fieldspec Pro spectroradiometer (400–2500 nm) for over 300 leaf samples. Canopy reflectance data was acquired from the medium resolution imaging spectrometer (MERIS). At the canopy level, with both leaf types combined, the DD-index showed the strongest relationship with leaf chlorophyll (R2 = 0.78; RMSE = 3.56 μg/cm2), despite differences in leaf structure. For needleleaf trees alone the relationship with the top VI was weaker (D[red], R2 = 0.71; RMSE = 2.32 μg/cm2). A sensitivity study using simulated VIs from physically-modelled leaf (PROSPECT) and canopy (4-Scale) reflectance was performed in order to further investigate these results and assess the impacts of different background types and leaf area index on the VIs’ performance. At the leaf level, the MNDVI8 index showed a strong linearity to changing chlorophyll and negligible difference to leaf structure/type. At canopy level, the best performing VIs were relatively consistent where LAI  4, but responded strongly to differences in background at low canopy coverage (LAI = 2). This research provides comprehensive assessments for the use of spectral indices in retrieval of spatially-continuous leaf chlorophyll content at the leaf (MTCI: R2 = 0.72; p < 0.001) and canopy (DD: R2 = 0.78; p < 0.001) level for resource management over different spatial and temporal scales.  相似文献

We demonstrated that exogenous application of 200 μM salicylic acid through root feeding and foliar spray could induce resistance against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. Lycopersici (Fol) in tomato. Endogenous accumulation of free salicylic acid in tomato roots was detected by HPLC and identification was confirmed by LC–MS/MS analysis. At 168 h of salicylic acid treatment through roots, the endogenous salicylic acid level in the roots increased to 1477 ng g?1 FW which was 10 times higher than control plants. Similarly, the salicylic acid content was 1001 ng g?1 FW at 168 h of treatment by foliar spray, which was 8.7 times higher than control plants. The activities of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL, EC 4.3.1.5) and peroxidase (POD, EC 1.11.1.7) were 5.9 and 4.7 times higher, respectively than the control plants at 168 h of salicylic acid feeding through the roots. The increase in PAL and POD activities was 3.7 and 3.3 times higher, respectively at 168 h of salicylic acid treatments through foliar spray than control plants. The salicylic acid-treated tomato plants challenged with Fol exhibited significantly reduced vascular browning and leaf yellowing wilting. The mycelial growth of Fol was not significantly affected by salicylic acid. Significant increase in basal level of salicylic acid in noninoculated plants indicated that tomato root system might have the capacity to assimilate and distribute salicylic acid throughout the plant. The results indicated that the induced resistance observed in tomato against Fol might be a case of salicylic acid-dependent systemic acquired resistance.  相似文献

Global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations (Ca) are rising. As a consequence, recent climate models have projected that global surface air temperature may increase 1.4–5.8 °C with the doubling of Ca by the end of the century. Because, changes in Ca and temperature are likely to occur concomitantly, it is important to evaluate how the temperature dependence of key physiological processes are affected by rising Ca in major crop plants including maize (Zea mays L.), a globally important grain crop with C4 photosynthetic pathway. We investigated the temperature responses of photosynthesis, growth, and development of maize plants grown at five temperature regimes ranging from 19/13 to 38.5/32.5 °C under current (370 μmol mol−1) and doubled (750 μmol mol−1) Ca throughout the vegetative stages using sunlit controlled environmental chambers in order to test if the temperature dependence of these processes was altered by elevated Ca. Leaf and canopy photosynthetic rates, C4 enzyme activities, leaf appearance rates, above ground biomass accumulation and leaf area were measured. We then applied temperature response functions (e.g., Arrhenius and Beta distribution models) to fit the measured data in order to provide parameter estimates of the temperature dependence for modeling photosynthesis and development at current and elevated Ca in maize. Biomass, leaf area, leaf appearance rate, and photosynthesis measured at growth Ca was not changed in response to CO2 enrichment. Carboxylation efficiency and the activities of C4 enzymes were reduced with CO2 enrichment indicating possible photosynthetic acclimation of the C4 cycle. All measured parameters responded to growth temperatures. Leaf appearance rate and leaf photosynthesis showed curvilinear response with optimal temperatures near 32 and 34 °C, respectively. Total above ground biomass and leaf area were negatively correlated with growth temperature. The dependence of leaf appearance rate, biomass, leaf area, leaf and canopy photosynthesis, and C4 enzyme activities on growth temperatures was comparable between current and elevated Ca. The results of this study suggest that the temperature effects on growth, development, and photosynthesis may remain unchanged in elevated Ca compared with current Ca in maize.  相似文献

The effect of salinity on leaf area and the relative accumulation of Na+ and K+ in leaves of the mangrove associate Hibiscus tiliaceus were investigated. Photosynthetic gas exchange characteristics were also examined under arid and non-arid leaf conditions at 0, 10, 20 and 30‰ substrate salinity. At salinities  40‰, plants showed complete defoliation followed by 100% mortality within 1 week. Salinities  30‰ were negatively correlated with the total leaf area per plant (r2 = 0.94). The reduction in the total plant leaf area is attributed to the reduction in the area of individual leaves (r2 = 0.94). Selective uptake of K+ over Na+ declined sharply with increasing salinity, where K+/Na+ ratio was reduced from 6.37 to 0.69 in plants treated with 0 and 30‰, respectively. Under non-arid leaf condition, increasing salinity from 0 to 30‰ has significantly reduced the values of the intrinsic components of photosynthesis Vc,max (from 50.4 to 18.4 μmol m−2 s-1), Jmax (from 118.0 to 33.8 μmol photons m−2 s−1), and VTPU (from 6.90 to 2.30 μmol m−2 s−1), while stomatal limitation to gas phase conductance (SL) increased from 14.6 to 38.4%. Water use efficiency (WUE) has subsequently doubled from 3.20 for the control plants to 8.93 for 30‰ treatment. Under arid leaf conditions, the stomatal factor (SL) was more limiting to photosynthesis than its biochemical components (73.4 to 26.6%, respectively, at 30‰). It is concluded that salinity causes a drastic decline in photosynthetic gas exchange in H. tiliaceus leaves through its intrinsic and stomatal components, and that the apparent phenotypic plasticity represented by the leaf area modulation is unlikely to be the mechanism by which H. tiliaceus avoids salt stress.  相似文献

Nutrient-use efficiency (NUE) within forests of the mangroves Rhizophora stylosa and Avicennia marina was estimated in arid Western Australia using litter fall rates and rates of leaf CO2 exchange. Litter fall rates ranged from 9.8 to 34.4 t DW ha−1 y−1 but equated to only 13–41% (mean = 30%) of net canopy primary production. Foliar N:P ratios were in most instances ≥16, suggesting P limitation. NUE for N based on litter fall rates were significantly less (NUEL = 167–322 g DW g−1 N) than those based on photosynthesis measurements (NUEP = 234–448 g DW g−1 N), suggesting that NUE estimates for nitrogen based on litter fall data are underestimates. NUEP estimates for N were significantly greater for R. stylosa than for A. marina. NUE for P were not significantly different, with NUEL ranging from 2905 to 5053 g DW g−1 P and NUEP ranging from 1632 to 4992 g DW g−1 P. Both sets of NUE are at the higher end of the range of estimates calculated for most other forests and equivalent to those for wet tropical mangroves. These arid-zone trees live in low-nutrient habitats, but it appears that selection on components of NUE (i.e. traits that reduce nutrient loss) rather than on NUE itself equates to a lack of clear patterns in NUE between different environments, emphasizing the flexible nature of nutrient allocation in woody plants. NUE in R. stylosa correlated inversely with mature leaf N and P content, implying that NUE in this species is maximized by the synthesis of low-nutrient leaves, i.e. a nutrient retention strategy, whereas such does not appear to be the case for A. marina. This strategy translates into a direct advantage in terms of net primary productivity for R. stylosa. This idea is supported by evidence of longer nutrient residence times for R. stylosa than for A. marina.  相似文献

The success of interpolation techniques relies heavily on the density and regularity of field reference data points. For instance temperature interpolations in the Arctic are hampered by few and scattered meteorological stations. The major objective of this study is to analyze the spatial relationship between plants, defined in terms of an index of thermophily (It) and temperature distribution. The study area is located in Kongsfjorden, northwest Spitsbergen (Svalbard). A systematic recording of floristic data covering the study area was made within quadrates of 1 km × 1 km (93 units). For each of them, the It was calculated. It provides a synthetic measure by which plants are taken as temperature indicators at a long time scale. Temperature values were recorded by means of 39 temperature loggers during the summer 2000. The model for spatial interpolation of temperature was developed using multiple regression of remote sensed data (Landsat TM) and topographical features derived from a digital elevation model (DEM). Continuous temperature layers were calculated at a spatial resolution of 50 m × 50 m, and aggregated to a resolution of 1 km × 1 km in order to correspond with the observed botanical units. Different maps were produced showing spatial distribution of the modelled temperature and It. Correlations between the It and temperature values derived from the modelled temperature layers were systematically explored. Correlation between the It and temperatures works well as standard deviation of residues is 0.7 °C only. Highest correlations (r) of It and the spatial distribution of temperature were obtained for: (a) maximum average temperature for August, excluding all areas higher than 100 m above sea level (0.75), (b) average daily maximum temperature for July–October (0.67), (c) average temperature for July and August (0.64, 0.65), and (d) when temperature range is >8 °C (0.55). Areas with low correlations between It and temperature were mainly attributed to the fact that these measurements represent (a) different time scales and (b) different spatial scales. However, results from this study have shown that calculating It provide a mean for restoring selected temperature parameters and thus can contribute to fill in and extend the network of field data points for temperature interpolation purposes.  相似文献

The partitioning of latent heat flux (QE) to vascular plant and moss surface components was assessed for a Sphagnum-dominated bog with a hummock–hollow surface having a sparse canopy of low shrubs. Results from porometry and eddy covariance measurements of QE showed evaporation from the moss surface ranged from greater than 50% of total QE early in the growing season to less than 20% after a dry period toward the end of the growing season. Both soil moisture and vapour pressure deficit (Da) affected this partitioning with drier moss and peat, lower water table, and smaller Da all reducing moss QE. Daily maximum moss QE ranged from greater than 200 W m−2 early in the growing season to less than 100 W m−2 during a dry period. In contrast, vascular contribution to total QE increased over the season from a daily maximum of about 150 W m−2 to 250 W m−2 due to increase in leaf area by leaf replacement and emergence and to drying of the moss surface. Porometry results showed average daily maximum conductance from bog shrubs was near 8 mm s−1. These conductance values were smaller than those reported for vascular plants from more nutrient-rich wetlands. The effect of increases in Da on vascular QE were moderated by decreases in stomatal conductance. At constant available energy, vascular leaf conductance was reduced by as much as 2 mm s−1 and moss surface conductance was enhanced by up to 3 mm s−1 by large Da. Considering vascular and non-vascular water transport characteristics and frequency of water table position and given the observed variations of QE partitioning with water table location and moss and peat water content, it is suggested that modelling efforts focus on how dry hummocks and wet hollows each contribute to QE, especially as related to Da and soil moisture dynamics.  相似文献

Haberlea rhodopensis is a homoiochlorophyllous resurrection plant that shows a low rate of leaf net CO2 uptake (4–6 μmol m?2 s?1) under saturating photosynthetic photon flux densities in air (21% O2 and about 390 ppm CO2). However, leaf net CO2 uptake reaches values of 17–18 μmol m?2 s?1 under saturating CO2 and light. H. rhodopensis leaves have a very low mesophyll CO2 conductance that can partly explain the low rate of leaf net CO2 uptake in normal air. Experimental evidences suggest that mesophyll conductance is not sensitive to temperature in the 20–35 °C range. In addition, it is shown that the (1) transpiration rate of H. rhodopensis is nearly linearly related to the vapour pressure difference between the leaf and the ambient air within the interval from 0.5 kPa to 2.5 kPa at a leaf temperature of 25 °C and (2) leaf net CO2 uptake in normal air under saturating light does not change much with leaf temperature (between 20 °C and 30 °C). At a leaf relative water content of between 90% and 30%, the decrease of leaf net CO2 assimilation during drought can be explained by a decrease of leaf CO2 diffusional conductance. Accordingly the non-photochemical chlorophyll fluorescence quenching decreases only at relative water contents lower than 20%, indicating that photosynthetic activity maintains a trans-thylakoidal proton gradient over a wide range of leaf water contents. Moreover, PSII photochemistry (as estimated by the Fv/Fm ratio and the thermoluminescence B band intensity) is only affected at leaf relative water contents lower than about 20%, thus confirming that primary photosynthetic reactions are resistant to drought. Interestingly, the effect of leaf desiccation on photosynthetic capacity, measured at very high ambient CO2 molar ratios under saturating PPFD, is identical to that observed for three non-resurrection C3 mesophytes. This demonstrates that the photosynthetic apparatus of H. rhodopensis is not more resistant to desiccation when compared to other C3 plants. Since the leaf area decreases by more than 50% when the leaf relative water content is reduced to about 40% during drought it is supposed, following Farrant et al. [Farrant, J.M., Vander, W.C., Lofell, D.A., Bartsch, S., Whittaker, A., 2003. An investigation into the role of light during desiccation of three angiosperms resurrection plants. Plant Cell Environ. 26, 1275–1286], that H. rhodopensis leaf cells avoid mechanical stress.  相似文献

Defensive proteins, such as polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and trypsin inhibitor (TI), are induced by herbivore wounding and exogenous methyl jasmonate application in various plant species. This study was conducted to measure induction of PPO and TI in radish, sweet pepper, tomato, and water spinach plants following herbivore wounding (I), methyl jasmonate application (M), and a combination of the two treatments (M + I). The effect of induced responses was also examined against third instar Spodoptera litura Fab. PPO activity was induced in radish by treatment I only; in sweet pepper, by treatments I and M; in tomato, by treatments I, M, and M + I; and in water spinach, by treatments M and M + I. The activity of TI was enhanced 1.2–1.4-fold in radish, sweet pepper, and tomato by M and M + I treatments, whereas in water spinach, it was enhanced 1.2-fold by all 3 treatments. The relative growth rate (RGR) of S. litura was reduced by 53% on radish plants following M treatment only. It was reduced by 37% and 42% on sweet paper plants following M and M + I treatment, respectively. RGR was significantly reduced on test tomato plants following I, M, and M + I treatments. The RGR of S. litura was unaffected on water spinach plants following any treatment. Collectively, the results of this study indicated that induction of plant defensive proteins in response to S. litura feeding or exogenous methyl jasmonate application varied among plant species, which further affected the induced plant resistance to the caterpillars.  相似文献

The effects of Cd have been investigated in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) plants grown in a controlled environment in hydroponics, using Cd concentrations of 10 and 100 μM. Cadmium treatment led to major effects in shoots and roots of tomato. Plant growth was reduced in both Cd treatments, leaves showed chlorosis symptoms when grown at 10 μM Cd and necrotic spots when grown at 100 μM Cd, and root browning was observed in both treatments. An increase in the activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, involved in anaplerotic fixation of CO2 into organic acids, was measured in root extracts of Cd-exposed plants. Also, significant increases in the activities of several enzymes from the Krebs cycle were measured in root extracts of tomato plants grown with Cd. In leaf extracts, significant increases in citrate synthase, isocitrate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase activities were also found at 100 μM Cd, whereas fumarase activity decreased. These data suggest that at low Cd supply (10 μM) tomato plants accumulate Cd in roots and this mechanism may be associated to an increased activity in the PEPC–MDH–CS metabolic pathway involved in citric acid synthesis in roots. Also, at low Cd supply some symptoms associated with a moderate Fe deficiency could be observed, whereas at high Cd supply (100 μM) effects on growth overrule any nutrient interaction caused by excess Cd. Cadmium excess also caused alterations on photosynthetic rates, photosynthetic pigment concentrations and chlorophyll fluorescence, as well as in nutrient homeostasis.  相似文献

Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis (Nordstedt) Gomont was autotrophically cultivated for biomass production in repeated fed-batch process using urea as nitrogen source, with the aim of making large-scale production easier, increasing cell productivity and then reducing the production costs. It was investigated the influence of the ratio of renewed volume to total volume (R), the urea feeding time (tf) and the number of successive repeated fed-batch cycles on the maximum cell concentration (Xm), cell productivity (Px), nitrogen-to-cell conversion yield (Yx/n), maximum specific growth rate (μm) and protein content of dry biomass. The experimental results demonstrated that R = 0.80 and tf = 6 d were the best cultivation conditions, being able to simultaneously ensure, throughout the three fed-batch cycles, the highest average values of three of the five responses (Xm = 2101 ± 113 mg L?1, Px = 219 ± 13 mg L?1 d?1 and Yx/n = 10.3 ± 0.8 g g?1).  相似文献

The effect of irrigation frequency on leaf physiomorphological processes of rose-scented geranium (Pelargonium capitatum × P. radens cv. Rose) was investigated in a glasshouse study at the Hatfield Experimental Farm of the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa, from November 2005 to October 2006. Daily, and every 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th day irrigation were applied as treatments. Leaf samples for electron-microscopic observations were taken one week prior to harvesting, whereafter all plants were re-watered. For each of the irrigation frequency treatments, 50% of the plants were then exposed to a one-week irrigation withholding period (brief stress treatment) prior to harvesting. During this period, physiological properties were recorded on a daily basis to identify or monitor change. Higher irrigation frequency and a brief water stress period increased essential oil yield. Lower irrigation frequency tended to increase the citronellol to geraniol (C:G) ratio to unacceptably high levels (C:G > 3). Upon re-watering, stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (Rt) were significantly lower for the lower irrigation frequency treatments, compared to the higher irrigation frequency treatments, while no noticeable differences were observed in water potential (ψw) and relative water content (RWC). At the end of the one-week stress period, Gs, Rt, ψw and RWC were lower for the plants that were more frequently irrigated compared to the less frequently irrigated treatments. Water stress reduced leaf size, and apparently increased trichome density, whereas the total number of trichomes per leaf remained more or less the same, indicating that total essential oil yield is mainly affected by leaf number (and not by leaf size or trichome number). Stomatal closure was the main water stress avoiding/adaptation mechanism. These results demonstrate that rose-scented geranium plants can make physiomorphological adaptations to save water. However, such a water saving strategy was counter-productive, since it resulted in lower essential oil yield and lower water-use efficiency.  相似文献

The kinetics of a stomatal response to sudden increases or decreases of CO2 concentrations ([CO2]) was studied in 13 plant species growing in the field. Plants were well supplied with water. In each plant, gas exchange measurements were made on a fully developed leaf that was first left to achieve steady-state stomatal conductance (gs) at 400 μmol (CO2) mol−1) and then exposed to a step change of [CO2] (to 700 μmol mol−1 in one experiment; and to 700 and back to 400 μmol mol−1 in a second experiment). Porometric data were captured in intervals of 3 s until a new steady state was reached.A comparison of t1/2, the half-time needed to achieve new gs, indicates similar responses of stomata in grasses when compared to herbs. The stomata of C4 plants responded in approximately 5 min, the highest closure rate was detected in Echinochloa crus-galli and Digitaria sanguinalis. Opening rates were similar to closing rates and the response as a whole was rather symmetric. In C3 plants, the full response of stomata was much slower. Analysis revealed differences in absolute rates of gs change between C3 and C4 plants. These differences can be related to the specificities of the type of photosynthetic metabolism. C4 photosynthesis enables plants to reduce gs, which can hasten further changes of diffusivity in response to the environmental signals. A possible coupling of C4 metabolism to the regulation of guard cells also has to be taken into account when explaining the observed results.  相似文献
