Lithium‐sulfur batteries have been plagued for a long time by low Coulombic efficiency, fast capacity loss, and poor high rate performance. Here, the synthesis of 3D hyperbranched hollow carbon nanorod encapsulated sulfur nanocomposites as cathode materials for lithium‐sulfur batteries is reported. The sulfur nanocomposite cathodes deliver a high specific capacity of 1378 mAh g‐1 at a 0.1C current rate and exhibit stable cycling performance. The as‐prepared sulfur nanocomposites also achieve excellent high rate capacities and cyclability, such as 990 mAh g‐1 at 1C, 861 mAh g‐1 at 5C, and 663 mAh g‐1 at 10C, extending to more than 500 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance are ascribed to the unique 3D hyperbranched hollow carbon nanorod architectures and high length/radius aspect ratio of the carbon nanorods, which can effectively prevent the dissolution of polysulfides, decrease self‐discharge, and confine the volume expansion on cycling. High capacity, excellent high‐rate performance, and long cycle life render the as‐developed sulfur/carbon nanorod nanocomposites a promising cathode material for lithium‐sulfur batteries.  相似文献

Both the energy density and cycle stability are still challenges for lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries in future practical applications. Usually, light‐weight and nonpolar carbon materials are used as the hosts of sulfur, however they struggle on the cycle stability and undermine the volumetric energy density of Li–S batteries. Here, heavy NiCo2O4 nanofibers as carbon‐free sulfur immobilizers are introduced to fabricate sulfur‐based composites. NiCo2O4 can accelerate the catalytic conversion kinetics of soluble intermediate polysulfides by strong chemical interaction, leading to a good cycle stability of sulfur cathodes. Specifically, the S/NiCo2O4 composite presents a high gravimetric capacity of 1125 mAh g?1 at 0.1 C rate with the composite as active material, and a low fading rate of 0.039% per cycle over 1500 cycles at 1 C rate. In particular, the S/NiCo2O4 composite with the high tap density of 1.66 g cm?3 delivers large volumetric capacity of 1867 mAh cm?3, almost twice that of the conventional S/carbon composites.  相似文献

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries hold great promise as a next‐generation battery system because of their extremely high theoretical energy density and low cost. However, ready lithium polysulfide (LiPS) diffusion and sluggish redox kinetics hamper their cyclability and rate capability. Herein, porphyrin‐derived graphene‐based nanosheets (PNG) are proposed for Li–S batteries, which are achieved by pyrolyzing a conformal and thin layer of 2D porphyrin organic framework on graphene to form carbon nanosheets with a spatially engineered nitrogen‐dopant‐enriched skin and a highly conductive skeleton. The atomic skin is decorated with fully exposed lithiophilic sites to afford strong chemisorption to LiPSs and improve electrolyte wettability, while graphene substrate provides speedy electron transport to facilitate redox kinetics of sulfur species. The use of PNG as a lightweight interlayer enables efficient operation of Li–S batteries in terms of superb cycle stability (cyclic decay rate of 0.099% during 300 cycles at 0.5 C), good rate capability (988 mAh g?1 at 2.0 C), and impressive sulfur loading (areal capacity of 8.81 mAh cm?2 at a sulfur loading of 8.9 mg cm?2). The distinct interfacial strategy is expected to apply to other conversion reaction batteries relying on dissolution–precipitation mechanisms and requiring interfacial charge‐ and mass‐transport‐mediation concurrently.  相似文献

The shuttle of polysulfide and severe volume change of sulfur cathodes, are the bottlenecks in the practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries, and need to be solved through further exploration of simple and scalable strategies. Herein, an elastic and conductive coating layer is designed and synthesized, by combining water soluble conducting polymer modified carbon nanotubes (PASANTs) with crosslinked waterborne polyurethane (cWPU). It shows high electronic conductivity and excellent resilience. As a result, a lithium–sulfur battery with cWPU/PASANTs coated cathode is able to achieve an outstanding cycle stability with a capacity of 70.8% after 500 cycles at 0.5C and an excellent rate performance (specific capacity of 1130 mAh g?1 at 0.1C and maintain 68.2% at 2C). This work embodies a systematic design concept, which shows the application prospects of large‐scale production, and is expected to be further applied to other easily pulverized high‐specific‐capacity materials such as silicon and tin.  相似文献

Practical applications of room temperature sodium–sulfur batteries are still inhibited by the poor conductivity and slow reaction kinetics of sulfur, and dissolution of intermediate polysulfides in the commonly used electrolytes. To address these issues, starting from a novel 3D Zn‐based metal–organic framework with 2,5‐thiophenedicarboxylic acid and 1,4‐bis(pyrid‐4‐yl) benzene as ligands, a S, N‐doped porous carbon host with 3D tubular holes for sulfur storage is fabricated. In contrast to the commonly used melt‐diffusion method to confine sulfur physically, a vapor‐infiltration method is utilized to achieve sulfur/carbon composite with covalent bonds, which can join electrochemical reaction without low voltage activation. A polydopamine derived N‐doped carbon layer is further coated on the composite to confine the high‐temperature‐induced gas‐phase sulfur inside the host. S and N dopants increase the polarity of the carbon host to restrict diffusion of sulfur, and its 3D porous structure provides a large storage area for sulfur. As a result, the obtained composite shows outstanding electrochemical performance with 467 mAh g?1 (1262 mAh g?1(sulfur)) at 0.1 A g?1, 270 mAh g?1 (730 mAh g?1(sulfur)) after 1000 cycles at 1 A g?1 and 201 mAh g?1 (543 mAh g?1(sulfur)) at 5.0 A g?1.  相似文献

One of the most challenging problems in the development of lithium–sulfur batteries is polysulfide dissolution, which leads to cell overcharge and low columbic efficiency. Here, we propose the formation of a thin conformal Li‐ion permeable oxide layer on the sulfur‐carbon composite electrode surface by rapid plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) in order to prevent this dissolution, while preserving electrical connectivity within the individual electrode particles. PEALD synthesis offers a fast deposition rate combined with a low operating temperature, which allows sulfur evaporation during deposition to be avoided. After PEALD of a thin layer of aluminium oxide on the surface of electrode composed of large (ca. 10 μm in diameter) S‐infiltrated activated carbon fibers (S‐ACF), significantly enhanced cycle life is observed, with a capacity in excess of 600 mA·h·g?1 after 300 charge–discharge cycles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows a significant amount of redeposited lithium sulfides on the external surface of regular S‐ACF electrodes. However, the PEALD alumina‐coated electrodes show no lithium sulfide deposits on the fiber surface. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) studies of the electrodes’ chemical composition further confirms that PEALD alumina coatings dramatically reduce S dissolution from the cathodes by confining the polysulfides inside the alumina barrier.  相似文献

A novel combination of hard carbon anode sodium pre‐loading and a tailored electrolyte is used to prepare room temperature sodium‐sulfur full cell batteries. The electrochemical loading with sodium ions is realized in a specific mixture of diethyl carbonate, ethylene carbonate, and fluoroethylene carbonate electrolyte in order to create a first solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the anode surface. Combining such anodes with a porous carbon/sulfur composite cathode results in full cells with a significantly decreased polysulfide shuttle when compared to half cells combined with metallic sodium anodes. Further optimization involves the use of Na2S/P2S5 doped tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether based electrolyte in the full cell for the formation of a second SEI, reducing polysulfide shuttle even further. More importantly, the electrochemical discharge processes in the cell are improved by adding this dissolved complexation agent to the electrolyte. As a result of this combination sodium‐sulfur cells with tailored cathode materials and electrolytes can achieve high discharge capacities up to 980 mAh g?1sulfur and 1000 cycles with 200 mAh g?1sulfur remaining capacity, at room temperature.  相似文献

Lithium–sulfur batteries are a promising high energy output solution for substitution of traditional lithium ion batteries. In recent times research in this field has stepped into the exploration of practical applications. However, their applications are impeded by cycling stability and short life‐span mainly due to the notorious polysulfide shuttle effect. In this work, a multifunctional sulfur host fabricated by grafting highly conductive Co3Se4 nanoparticles onto the surface of an N‐doped 3D carbon matrix to inhibit the polysulfide shuttle and improve the sulfur utilization is proposed. By regulating the carbon matrix and the Co3Se4 distribution, N‐CN‐750@Co3Se4‐0.1 m with abundant polar sites is experimentally and theoretically shown to be a good LiPSs absorbent and a sulfur conversion accelerator. The S/N‐CN‐750@Co3Se4‐0.1 m cathode shows excellent sulfur utilization, rate performance, and cyclic durability. A prolonged cycling test of the as‐fabricated S/N‐CN‐750@Co3Se4‐0.1 m cathode is carried out at 0.2 C for more than 5 months which delivers a high initial capacity of 1150.3 mAh g?1 and retains 531.0 mAh g?1 after 800 cycles with an ultralow capacity reduction of 0.067% per cycle, maintaining Coulombic efficiency of more than 99.3%. The reaction details are characterized and analyzed by ex situ measurements. This work highly emphasizes the potential capabilities of transition‐metal selenides in lithium–sulfur batteries.  相似文献

The detrimental shuttle effect in lithium–sulfur batteries mainly results from the mobility of soluble polysulfide intermediates and their sluggish conversion kinetics. Herein, presented is a multifunctional catalyst with the merits of strong polysulfides adsorption ability, superior polysulfides conversion activity, high specific surface area, and electron conductivity by in situ crafting of the TiO2‐MXene (Ti3C2Tx) heterostructures. The uniformly distributed TiO2 on MXene sheets act as capturing centers to immobilize polysulfides, the hetero‐interface ensures rapid diffusion of anchored polysulfides from TiO2 to MXene, and the oxygen‐terminated MXene surface is endowed with high catalytic activity toward polysulfide conversion. The improved lithium–sulfur batteries deliver 800 mAh g?1 at 2 C and an ultralow capacity decay of 0.028% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 2 C. Even with a high sulfur loading of 5.1 mg cm?2, the capacity retention of 93% after 200 cycles is still maintained. This work sheds new insights into the design of high‐performance catalysts with manipulated chemical components and tailored surface chemistry to regulate polysulfides in Li–S batteries.  相似文献

Rechargeable metal–sulfur batteries encounter severe safety hazards and fast capacity decay, caused by the flammable and shrinkable separator and unwanted polysulfide dissolution under elevated temperatures. Herein, a multifunctional Janus separator is designed by integrating temperature endurable electrospinning polyimide nonwovens with a copper nanowire‐graphene nanosheet functional layer and a rigid lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide‐polyethylene oxide matrix. Such architecture offers multifold advantages: i) intrinsically high dimensional stability and flame‐retardant capability, ii) excellent electrolyte wettability and effective metal dendritic growth inhibition, and iii) powerful physical blockage/chemical anchoring capability for the shuttled polysulfides. As a consequence, the as constructed lithium–sulfur battery using a pure sulfur cathode displays an outstandingly high discharge capacity of 1402.1 mAh g?1 and a record high cycling stability (approximately average 0.24% capacity decay per cycle within 300 cycles) at 80 °C, outperforming the state‐of‐the‐art results in the literature. Promisingly, a high sulfur mass loading of ≈3.0 mg cm?2 and a record low electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 6.0 are achieved. This functional separator also performs well for a high temperature magnesium–sulfur battery. This work demonstrates a new concept for high performance metal–sulfur battery design and promises safe and durable operation of the next generation energy storage systems.  相似文献

Rechargeable lithium–sulfur batteries have attracted tremendous scientific attention owing to their superior energy density. However, the sulfur electrochemistry involves multielectron redox reactions and complicated phase transformations, while the final morphology of solid‐phase Li2S precipitates largely dominate the battery's performance. Herein, a triple‐phase interface among electrolyte/CoSe2/G is proposed to afford strong chemisorption, high electrical conductivity, and superb electrocatalysis of polysulfide redox reactions in a working lithium–sulfur battery. The triple‐phase interface effectively enhances the kinetic behaviors of soluble lithium polysulfides and regulates the uniform nucleation and controllable growth of solid Li2S precipitates at large current density. Therefore, the cell with the CoSe2/G functional separator delivers an ultrahigh rate cycle at 6.0 C with an initial capacity of 916 mAh g?1 and a capacity retention of 459 mAh g?1 after 500 cycles, and a stable operation of high sulfur loading electrode (2.69–4.35 mg cm?2). This work opens up a new insight into the energy chemistry at interfaces to rationally regulate the electrochemical redox reactions, and also inspires the exploration of related energy storage and conversion systems based on multielectron redox reactions.  相似文献

Lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries are considered to be one of the promising next‐generation energy storage systems. Considerable progress has been achieved in sulfur composite cathodes, but high cycling stability and discharging capacity at the expense of volumetric capacity have offset their advantages. Herein, a functional separator is presented by coating cobalt‐embedded nitrogen‐doped porous carbon nanosheets and graphene on one surface of a commercial polypropylene separator. The coating layer not only suppresses the polysulfide shuttle effect through chemical affinity, but also functions as an electrocatalyst to propel catalytic conversion of intercepted polysulfides. The slurry‐bladed carbon nanotubes/sulfur cathode with 90 wt% sulfur deliver high reversible capacity of 1103 mA h g?1 and volumetric capacity of 1062 mA h cm?3 at 0.2 C, and the freestanding carbon nanofibers/sulfur cathode provides a high discharging capacity of 1190 mA h g?1 and volumetric capacity of 1136 mA h cm?3 at high sulfur content of 78 wt% and sulfur loading of 10.5 mg cm?2. The electrochemical performance is comparable with or even superior to those in the state‐of‐the‐art carbon‐based sulfur cathodes. The separator reported in this work holds great promise for the development of high‐energy‐density Li‐S batteries.  相似文献

Despite the 3–5 fold higher energy density than the conventional Li‐ion cells at a lower cost, commercialization of Li–S batteries is hindered by the insulating nature of sulfur and the dissolution of intermediate polysulfides (Li2S X , 4 < X ≤ 8) into the electrolyte. The authors demonstrate here multichannel carbon nanofibers that are composed of parallel mesoporous channels connected with micropores as sulfur containment. In addition, hydroxyl functional groups are formed on the carbon surface through a chemical activation to enhance the interaction between sulfur and carbon. In the sulfur embedded composite, the mesoporous multichannel enhances the active material utilization and sulfur loading, while the micropores act as a reaction chamber for sulfur component and trap site for polysulfide with the assistance of the functional groups. This sulfur–carbon composite electrode with 2.2 mg cm?2 sulfur displays excellent performance with high rate capability (initial capacity of 1351 mA h g?1 at C/5 rate and 847 mA h g?1 at 5C rate), maintaining 920 mA h g?1 even after 300 cycles (a decay of 0.07% per cycle). Furthermore, a stable reversible capacity of as high as ≈1100 mA h g?1 is realized with a higher sulfur loading of 4.6 mg cm?2.  相似文献

Due to unprecedented features including high‐energy density, low cost, and light weight, lithium–sulfur batteries have been proposed as a promising successor of lithium‐ion batteries. However, unresolved detrimental low Li‐ion transport rates in traditional carbon materials lead to large energy barrier in high sulfur loading batteries, which prevents the lithium–sulfur batteries from commercialization. In this report, to overcome the challenge of increasing both the cycling stability and areal capacity, a metallic oxide composite (NiCo2O4@rGO) is designed to enable a robust separator with low energy barrier for Li‐ion diffusion and simultaneously provide abundant active sites for the catalytic conversion of the polar polysulfides. With a high sulfur‐loading of 6 mg cm?2 and low sulfur/electrolyte ratio of 10, the assembled batteries deliver an initial capacity of 5.04 mAh cm?2 as well as capacity retention of 92% after 400 cycles. The metallic oxide composite NiCo2O4@rGO/PP separator with low Li‐ion diffusion energy barrier opens up the opportunity for lithium–sulfur batteries to achieve long‐cycle, cost‐effective operation toward wide applications in electric vehicles and electronic devices.  相似文献

A flexible and free‐standing porous carbon nanofibers/selenium composite electrode (Se@PCNFs) is prepared by infiltrating Se into mesoporous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs). The porous carbon with optimized mesopores for accommodating Se can synergistically suppress the active material dissolution and provide mechanical stability needed for the film. The Se@PCNFs electrode exhibits exceptional electrochemical performance for both Li‐ion and Na‐ion storage. In the case of Li‐ion storage, it delivers a reversible capacity of 516 mAh g?1 after 900 cycles without any capacity loss at 0.5 A g?1. Se@PCNFs still delivers a reversible capacity of 306 mAh g?1 at 4 A g?1. While being used in Na‐Se batteries, the composite electrode maintains a reversible capacity of 520 mAh g?1 after 80 cycles at 0.05 A g?1 and a rate capability of 230 mAh g?1 at 1 A g?1. The high capacity, good cyclability, and rate capability are attributed to synergistic effects of the uniform distribution of Se in PCNFs and the 3D interconnected PCNFs framework, which could alleviate the shuttle reaction of polyselenides intermediates during cycling and maintain the perfect electrical conductivity throughout the electrode. By rational and delicate design, this type of self‐supported electrodes may hold great promise for the development of Li‐Se and Na‐Se batteries with high power and energy densities.  相似文献

Sulfur represents one of the most promising cathode materials for next‐generation batteries; however, the widely observed polysulfide dissolution/shuttling phenomenon in metal–sulfur redox chemistries has severely restricted their applications. Here it is demonstrated that when pairing the sulfur electrode with the iron metal anode, the inherent insolubility of iron sulfides renders the shuttling‐free nature of the Fe–S electrochemical reactions. Consequently, the sulfur electrode exhibits promising performance for Fe2+ storage, where a high capacity of ≈1050 mAh g?1, low polarization of ≈0.16 V as well as stable cycling of 150 cycles are realized. The Fe–S redox mechanism is further revealed as an intriguing stepwise conversion of S8 ? FeS2 ? Fe3S4 ? FeS, where a low volume expansion of ≈32.6% and all‐solid‐state phase transitions facilitate the reaction reversibility. This study suggests an alternative direction to exploit sulfur electrodes in rechargeable transition metal–sulfur batteries.  相似文献

A unique nanostructure of 3D and vertically aligned and interconnected porous carbon nanosheets (3D‐VCNs) is demonstrated by a simple carbonization of agar. The key feature of 3D‐VCNs is that they possess numerous 3D channels with macrovoids and mesopores, leading to high surface area of 1750 m2 g?1, which play an important role in loading large amount of sulfur, while vertically aligned microporous carbon nanosheets act as the multilayered physical barrier against polysulfides anions and prevent their dissolution in the electrolyte due to strong adsorption during cycling process. As a result, the 3D hybrid (3D‐S‐VCNs) infiltered with 68.3 wt% sulfur exhibits a high and stable reversible capacity of 844 mAh g?1 at the current density of 837 mA g?1 with excellent Coulombic efficiency ≈100%, capacity retention of ≈80.3% over 300 cycles, and good rate ability (the reversible capacity of 738 mAh g?1 at the high current density of 3340 mA g?1). The present work highlights the vital role of the introduction of 3D carbon nanosheets with macrovoids and mesopores in enhancing the performance of LSBs.  相似文献

Uncovering the key contributions of molecular details to capture polysulfides is important for applying suitable materials that can effectively restrain the shuttle effect in advanced lithium–sulfur batteries. This is particularly true for natural biomolecules with substantial structural and compositional diversities strongly impacting their functions. Here, natural gelatin and zein proteins are first denatured and then adopted for fabrication of nanocomposite interlayers via functionalization of carbon nanofibers. From the results of experiment and molecular dynamic simulations, it is found that the lengths of the sidechains on the two proteins play critical roles. The short‐branched gelatin shows significantly stronger adsorption of polysulfides, as compared with zein comprising many long‐chain residues. The gelatin‐based interlayer, along with its good porous structures/electrical conductivity, greatly suppresses the shuttle effect and yields exceptional electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the implementation of proteins as functional binder additives further supports the finding that gelatin enables stronger polysulfide‐trapping. As a result, high‐loading sulfur cathodes (9.4 mg cm?2) are realized, which deliver a high average areal capacity of 8.2 mAh cm?2 over 100 cycles at 0.1 A g?1. This work demonstrates the importance of sidechain length in capturing polysulfides and provides a new insight in selecting and design of desired polysulfide‐binding molecules.  相似文献

Orthorhombic α‐MoO3 is a potential anode material for lithium‐ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity of 1100 mAh g?1 and excellent structural stability. However, its intrinsic poor electronic conductivity and high volume expansion during the charge–discharge process impede it from achieving a high practical capacity. A novel composite of α‐MoO3 nanobelts and single‐walled carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs) is synthesized by a facile microwave hydrothermal technique and demonstrated as a high‐performance anode material for lithium‐ion batteries. The α‐MoO3/SWCNH composite displays superior electrochemical properties (654 mAh g?1 at 1 C), excellent rate capability (275 mAh g?1 at 5 C), and outstanding cycle life (capacity retention of >99% after 3000 cycles at 1 C) without any cracking of the electrode. The presence of SWCNHs in the composite enhances the electrochemical properties of α‐MoO3 by acting as a lithium storage material, electronic conductive medium, and buffer against pulverization.  相似文献

Hybrid nanostructures containing 1D carbon nanotubes and 2D graphene sheets have many promising applications due to their unique physical and chemical properties. In this study, the authors find Prussian blue (dehydrated sodium ferrocyanide) can be converted to N‐doped graphene–carbon nanotube hybrid materials through a simple one‐step pyrolysis process. Through field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, Raman spectra, atomic force microscopy, and isothermal analyses, the authors identify that 2D graphene and 1D carbon nanotubes are bonded seamlessly during the growth stage. When used as the sulfur scaffold for lithium–sulfur batteries, it demonstrates outstanding electrochemical performance, including a high reversible capacity (1221 mA h g?1 at 0.2 C rate), excellent rate capability (458 and 220 mA h g?1 at 5 and 10 C rates, respectively), and excellent cycling stability (321 and 164 mA h g?1 at 5 and 10 C (1 C = 1673 mA g?1) after 1000 cycles). The enhancement of electrochemical performance can be attributed to the 3D architecture of the hybrid material, in which, additionally, the nitrogen doping generates defects and active sites for improved interfacial adsorption. Furthermore, the nitrogen doping enables the effective trapping of lithium polysulfides on electroactive sites within the cathode, leading to a much‐improved cycling performance. Therefore, the hybrid material functions as a redox shuttle to catenate and bind polysulfides, and convert them to insoluble lithium sulfide during reduction. The strategy reported in this paper could open a new avenue for low cost synthesis of N‐doped graphene–carbon nanotube hybrid materials for high performance lithium–sulfur batteries.  相似文献
