Multisensory integration was once thought to be the domain of brain areas high in the cortical hierarchy, with early sensory cortical fields devoted to unisensory processing of inputs from their given set of sensory receptors. More recently, a wealth of evidence documenting visual and somatosensory responses in auditory cortex, even as early as the primary fields, has changed this view of cortical processing. These multisensory inputs may serve to enhance responses to sounds that are accompanied by other sensory cues, effectively making them easier to hear, but may also act more selectively to shape the receptive field properties of auditory cortical neurons to the location or identity of these events. We discuss the new, converging evidence that multiplexing of neural signals may play a key role in informatively encoding and integrating signals in auditory cortex across multiple sensory modalities. We highlight some of the many open research questions that exist about the neural mechanisms that give rise to multisensory integration in auditory cortex, which should be addressed in future experimental and theoretical studies.  相似文献

Auditory cortical plasticity can be induced through various approaches. The medial geniculate body (MGB) of the auditory thalamus gates the ascending auditory inputs to the cortex. The thalamocortical system has been proposed to play a critical role in the responses of the auditory cortex (AC). In the present study, we investigated the cellular mechanism of the cortical activity, adopting an in vivo intracellular recording technique, recording from the primary auditory cortex (AI) while presenting an acoustic stimulus to the rat and electrically stimulating its MGB. We found that low-frequency stimuli enhanced the amplitudes of sound-evoked excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) in AI neurons, whereas high-frequency stimuli depressed these auditory responses. The degree of this modulation depended on the intensities of the train stimuli as well as the intervals between the electrical stimulations and their paired sound stimulations. These findings may have implications regarding the basic mechanisms of MGB activation of auditory cortical plasticity and cortical signal processing.  相似文献

Distributed coding of sound locations in the auditory cortex   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Although the auditory cortex plays an important role in sound localization, that role is not well understood. In this paper, we examine the nature of spatial representation within the auditory cortex, focusing on three questions. First, are sound-source locations encoded by individual sharply tuned neurons or by activity distributed across larger neuronal populations? Second, do temporal features of neural responses carry information about sound-source location? Third, are any fields of the auditory cortex specialized for spatial processing? We present a brief review of recent work relevant to these questions along with the results of our investigations of spatial sensitivity in cat auditory cortex. Together, they strongly suggest that space is represented in a distributed manner, that response timing (notably first-spike latency) is a critical information-bearing feature of cortical responses, and that neurons in various cortical fields differ in both their degree of spatial sensitivity and their manner of spatial coding. The posterior auditory field (PAF), in particular, is well suited for the distributed coding of space and encodes sound-source locations partly by modulations of response latency. Studies of neurons recorded simultaneously from PAF and/or A1 reveal that spatial information can be decoded from the relative spike times of pairs of neurons - particularly when responses are compared between the two fields - thus partially compensating for the absence of an absolute reference to stimulus onset.  相似文献

Multi-unit electrophysiological mapping was used to establish the area of the left- and right-hemisphere auditory cortex (AC) of the mouse and to characterize various fields within the AC. The AC of the left hemisphere covered a significantly larger (factor of 1.30) area compared to that of the right side. Based on best-frequency (BF) maps and other neuronal response characteristics to tone and noise bursts, five fields (primary auditory field, anterior auditory field, second auditory field, ultrasonic field, dorsoposterior field) and two small non-specified areas could be delimited on both hemispheres. The relative sizes of these fields and areas were similar on both sides. The primary and anterior auditory fields were tonotopically organized with counter running frequency gradients merging in the center of the AC. These fields covered BF ranges up to about 45 kHz. Higher BFs up to about 70 kHz were represented non-tonotopically in the separate ultrasonic field, part of which may be considered as belonging to the primary field. The dorsoposterior and second auditory fields were non-tonotopically organized and neurons had special response properties. These characteristics of the mouse AC were compared with auditory cortical maps of other mammals. Accepted: 25 July 1997  相似文献

Periodic envelope or amplitude modulations (AM) with periodicities up to several thousand Hertz are characteristic for many natural sounds. Throughout the auditory pathway, signal periodicity is evident in neuronal discharges phase-locked to the envelope. In contrast to lower levels of the auditory pathway, cortical neurons do not phase-lock to periodicities above about 100 Hz. Therefore, we investigated alternative coding strategies for high envelope periodicities at the cortical level. Neuronal responses in the primary auditory cortex (AI) of gerbils to tones and AM were analysed. Two groups of stimuli were tested: (1) AM with a carrier frequency set to the unit's best frequency evoked phase-locked responses which were confined to low modulation frequencies (fms) up to about 100 Hz, and (2) AM with a spectrum completely outside the unit's frequency-response range evoked completely different responses that never showed phase-locking but a rate-tuning to high fms (50 to about 3000 Hz). In contrast to the phase-locked responses, the best fms determined from these latter responses appeared to be topographically distributed, reflecting a periodotopic organization in the AI. Implications of these results for the cortical representation of the perceptual qualities rhythm, roughness and pitch are discussed. Accepted: 25 July 1997  相似文献

Computational models of primary visual cortex have demonstrated that principles of efficient coding and neuronal sparseness can explain the emergence of neurones with localised oriented receptive fields. Yet, existing models have failed to predict the diverse shapes of receptive fields that occur in nature. The existing models used a particular "soft" form of sparseness that limits average neuronal activity. Here we study models of efficient coding in a broader context by comparing soft and "bard" forms of neuronal sparseness. As a result of our analyses, we propose a novel network model for visual cortex. The model forms efficient visual representations in which the number of active neurones, rather than mean neuronal activity, is limited. This form of hard sparseness also economises cortical resources like synaptic memory and metabolic energy. Furthermore, our model accurately predicts the distribution of receptive field shapes found in the primary visual cortex of cat and monkey.

Although individuals with autism are known to have significant communication problems, the cellular mechanisms responsible for impaired communication are poorly understood. Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsant that is a known risk factor for autism in prenatally exposed children. Prenatal VPA exposure in rats causes numerous neural and behavioral abnormalities that mimic autism. We predicted that VPA exposure may lead to auditory processing impairments which may contribute to the deficits in communication observed in individuals with autism. In this study, we document auditory cortex responses in rats prenatally exposed to VPA. We recorded local field potentials and multiunit responses to speech sounds in primary auditory cortex, anterior auditory field, ventral auditory field. and posterior auditory field in VPA exposed and control rats. Prenatal VPA exposure severely degrades the precise spatiotemporal patterns evoked by speech sounds in secondary, but not primary auditory cortex. This result parallels findings in humans and suggests that secondary auditory fields may be more sensitive to environmental disturbances and may provide insight into possible mechanisms related to auditory deficits in individuals with autism. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cortical receptive fields represent the signal preferences of sensory neurons. Receptive fields are thought to provide a representation of sensory experience from which the cerebral cortex may make interpretations. While it is essential to determine a neuron's receptive field, it remains unclear which features of the acoustic environment are specifically represented by neurons in the primary auditory cortex (AI). We characterized cat AI spectrotemporal receptive fields (STRFs) by finding both the spike-triggered average (STA) and stimulus dimensions that maximized the mutual information between response and stimulus. We derived a nonlinearity relating spiking to stimulus projection onto two maximally informative dimensions (MIDs). The STA was highly correlated with the first MID. Generally, the nonlinearity for the first MID was asymmetric and often monotonic in shape, while the second MID nonlinearity was symmetric and nonmonotonic. The joint nonlinearity for both MIDs revealed that most first and second MIDs were synergistic and thus should be considered conjointly. The difference between the nonlinearities suggests different possible roles for the MIDs in auditory processing.  相似文献

Background

Radial intra- and interlaminar connections form a basic microcircuit in primary auditory cortex (AI) that extracts acoustic information and distributes it to cortical and subcortical networks. Though the structure of this microcircuit is known, we do not know how the functional connectivity between layers relates to laminar processing.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We studied the relationships between functional connectivity and receptive field properties in this columnar microcircuit by simultaneously recording from single neurons in cat AI in response to broadband dynamic moving ripple stimuli. We used spectrotemporal receptive fields (STRFs) to estimate the relationship between receptive field parameters and the functional connectivity between pairs of neurons. Interlaminar connectivity obtained through cross-covariance analysis reflected a consistent pattern of information flow from thalamic input layers to cortical output layers. Connection strength and STRF similarity were greatest for intralaminar neuron pairs and in supragranular layers and weaker for interlaminar projections. Interlaminar connection strength co-varied with several STRF parameters: feature selectivity, phase locking to the stimulus envelope, best temporal modulation frequency, and best spectral modulation frequency. Connectivity properties and receptive field relationships differed for vertical and horizontal connections.

Conclusions/Significance

Thus, the mode of local processing in supragranular layers differs from that in infragranular layers. Therefore, specific connectivity patterns in the auditory cortex shape the flow of information and constrain how spectrotemporal processing transformations progress in the canonical columnar auditory microcircuit.  相似文献

Multimodal objects and events activate many sensory cortical areas simultaneously. This is possibly reflected in reciprocal modulations of neuronal activity, even at the level of primary cortical areas. However, the synaptic character of these interareal interactions, and their impact on synaptic and behavioral sensory responses are unclear. Here, we found that activation of auditory cortex by a noise burst drove local GABAergic inhibition on supragranular pyramids of the mouse primary visual cortex, via cortico-cortical connections. This inhibition was generated by sound-driven excitation of a limited number of cells in infragranular visual cortical neurons. Consequently, visually driven synaptic and spike responses were reduced upon bimodal stimulation. Also, acoustic stimulation suppressed conditioned behavioral responses to a dim flash, an effect that was prevented by acute blockade of GABAergic transmission in visual cortex. Thus, auditory cortex activation by salient stimuli degrades potentially distracting sensory processing in visual cortex by recruiting local, translaminar, inhibitory circuits.  相似文献

Identifying behaviorally relevant sounds in the presence of background noise is one of the most important and poorly understood challenges faced by the auditory system. An elegant solution to this problem would be for the auditory system to represent sounds in a noise-invariant fashion. Since a major effect of background noise is to alter the statistics of the sounds reaching the ear, noise-invariant representations could be promoted by neurons adapting to stimulus statistics. Here we investigated the extent of neuronal adaptation to the mean and contrast of auditory stimulation as one ascends the auditory pathway. We measured these forms of adaptation by presenting complex synthetic and natural sounds, recording neuronal responses in the inferior colliculus and primary fields of the auditory cortex of anaesthetized ferrets, and comparing these responses with a sophisticated model of the auditory nerve. We find that the strength of both forms of adaptation increases as one ascends the auditory pathway. To investigate whether this adaptation to stimulus statistics contributes to the construction of noise-invariant sound representations, we also presented complex, natural sounds embedded in stationary noise, and used a decoding approach to assess the noise tolerance of the neuronal population code. We find that the code for complex sounds in the periphery is affected more by the addition of noise than the cortical code. We also find that noise tolerance is correlated with adaptation to stimulus statistics, so that populations that show the strongest adaptation to stimulus statistics are also the most noise-tolerant. This suggests that the increase in adaptation to sound statistics from auditory nerve to midbrain to cortex is an important stage in the construction of noise-invariant sound representations in the higher auditory brain.  相似文献

Neuronal responses of an acutely isolated slab of auditory cortex (area AI) to intracortical electrical stimulation were studied intracellularly in cats anesthetized with pentobarbital. It was found that 77% of responses were primary IPSPs, and allowing for secondary inhibitory responses, an inhibitory response was observed in 92% of neurons. All types of neuronal responses in the slab were short-latency. The maximal response latency did not exceed 5 msec. Neurons responding to stimulation by IPSPs were found at all depths in the slab, with a maximum in layers II–III. Nearly all primary IPSPswere mono- and disynaptic. Pentobarbital increased the duration of individual neuronal inhibitory responses in the isolated slab of auditory cortex without affecting maximal duration of the IPSP. The mechanisms of the effect of pentobarbital on the amplitude and duration of IPSPs are discussed.I. I. Mechnikov Odessa State University. Receptive fields of auditory cortical neurons were studied by electrical stimulation of nerve fibers in different parts of the cochlea in cats anesthetized with pentobarbital. The dimensions of the receptive fields were shown to depend on the topographic arrangement of the neuron in the auditory cortex. The more caudad the neuron on the cortical projection of the cochlea in the primary auditory cortex, the more extensive its receptive field. The receptive fields were narrowest in the basal turn of the cochlea and were symmetrical with respect to their center. It is suggested that the region of finest discrimination of acoustic stimuli in cats is located in the basal region of the cochlea, i.e., in that part of its receptor system which has the narrowest receptive field and is represented by significantly more (than the middle and apical regions of the cochlea) nerve cells in the primary auditory cortex [1].A. Frequency resolution and spectral filtering in the cat primary auditory cortex (AI) were mapped by extracellular recordings of tone responses in white noise of various bandwidths. Single-tone excitatory tuning curves, critical bandwidths, and critical ratios were determined as a function of neuronal characteristic frequency and tone level. Single-tone excitatory tuning curves are inadequate measures of frequency resolution and spectral filtering in the AI, because their shapes (in most neurons) deviated substantially from the shapes of “tuning curves for complex sound analysis”, the curves determined by the band limits of the critical bandwidths. Perceptual characteristics of spectral filtering (intensity independence and frequency dependence) were found in average critical bandwidths of neurons from the central and ventral AI. The highest frequency resolution (smallest critical bandwidths) reached by neurons in the central and ventral AI equaled the psychophysical frequency resolution. The dorsal AI is special, since most neurons there had response properties incompatible with psychophysical features of frequency resolution. Perceptual characteristics of critical ratios were not found in the average neuronal responses in any area of the AI. It seems that spectral integration in the way proposed to be the basis for the perception of tones in noise is not present at the level of the AI. Accepted: 21 July 1997  相似文献

The inhomogeneous distribution of the receptive fields of cortical neurons influences the cortical representation of the orientation of short lines seen in visual images. We construct a model of the response of populations of neurons in the human primary visual cortex by combining realistic response properties of individual neurons and cortical maps of orientation and location preferences. The encoding error, which characterizes the difference between the parameters of a visual stimulus and their cortical representation, is calculated using Fisher information as the square root of the variance of a statistically efficient estimator. The error of encoding orientation varies considerably with the location and orientation of the short line stimulus as modulated by the underlying orientation preference map. The average encoding error depends only weakly on the structure of the orientation preference map and is much smaller than the human error of estimating orientation measured psychophysically. From this comparison we conclude that the actual mechanism of orientation perception does not make efficient use of all the information available in the neuronal responses and that it is the decoding of visual information from neuronal responses that limits psychophysical performance. The mismatch negativity (MMN) is a key biomarker of automatic deviance detection thought to emerge from 2 cortical sources. First, the auditory cortex (AC) encodes spectral regularities and reports frequency-specific deviances. Then, more abstract representations in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) allow to detect contextual changes of potential behavioral relevance. However, the precise location and time asynchronies between neuronal correlates underlying this frontotemporal network remain unclear and elusive. Our study presented auditory oddball paradigms along with “no-repetition” controls to record mismatch responses in neuronal spiking activity and local field potentials at the rat medial PFC. Whereas mismatch responses in the auditory system are mainly induced by stimulus-dependent effects, we found that auditory responsiveness in the PFC was driven by unpredictability, yielding context-dependent, comparatively delayed, more robust and longer-lasting mismatch responses mostly comprised of prediction error signaling activity. This characteristically different composition discarded that mismatch responses in the PFC could be simply inherited or amplified downstream from the auditory system. Conversely, it is more plausible for the PFC to exert top-down influences on the AC, since the PFC exhibited flexible and potent predictive processing, capable of suppressing redundant input more efficiently than the AC. Remarkably, the time course of the mismatch responses we observed in the spiking activity and local field potentials of the AC and the PFC combined coincided with the time course of the large-scale MMN-like signals reported in the rat brain, thereby linking the microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic levels of automatic deviance detection.

Neuronal recordings in the medial prefrontal cortex of the rat demonstrate that auditory mismatch responses are purely composed of prediction error signaling activity, independent from the spectral effects that drive the auditory system.  相似文献

Stimulus-specific adaptation (SSA) in single neurons of the auditory cortex was suggested to be a potential neural correlate of the mismatch negativity (MMN), a widely studied component of the auditory event-related potentials (ERP) that is elicited by changes in the auditory environment. However, several aspects on this SSA/MMN relation remain unresolved. SSA occurs in the primary auditory cortex (A1), but detailed studies on SSA beyond A1 are lacking. To study the topographic organization of SSA, we mapped the whole rat auditory cortex with multiunit activity recordings, using an oddball paradigm. We demonstrate that SSA occurs outside A1 and differs between primary and nonprimary cortical fields. In particular, SSA is much stronger and develops faster in the nonprimary than in the primary fields, paralleling the organization of subcortical SSA. Importantly, strong SSA is present in the nonprimary auditory cortex within the latency range of the MMN in the rat and correlates with an MMN-like difference wave in the simultaneously recorded local field potentials (LFP). We present new and strong evidence linking SSA at the cellular level to the MMN, a central tool in cognitive and clinical neuroscience.  相似文献

The development of cortical layers, areas and networks is mediated by a combination of factors that are present in the cortex and are influenced by thalamic input. Electrical activity of thalamocortical afferents has a progressive role in shaping cortex. For early thalamic innervation and patterning, the presence of activity might be sufficient; for features that develop later, such as intracortical networks that mediate emergent responses of cortex, the spatiotemporal pattern of activity often has an instructive role. Experiments that route projections from the retina to the auditory pathway alter the pattern of activity in auditory thalamocortical afferents at a very early stage and reveal the progressive influence of activity on cortical development. Thus, cortical features such as layers and thalamocortical innervation are unaffected, whereas features that develop later, such as intracortical connections, are affected significantly. Surprisingly, the behavioural role of 'rewired' cortex is also influenced profoundly, indicating the importance of patterned activity for this key aspect of cortical function.  相似文献
