In order to assess the status of lemurs along the lower reaches of the Mahavavy in north-west Madagascar, we carried out transect line sampling at Anjamena between April and August 1995. These data were complemented by additional absence–presence surveys conducted in 1994 and 1995 in many of the remaining forested areas of the region. This is the first study of lemur population density estimates for the faunal subregion between the rivers Mahavavy and Betisboka. Six sympatric lemurs are found at Anjamena: Cheirogaleus medius, Eulemur fulvus rufus, E. mongoz, Lepilemur sp., Microcebus murinus and Propithecus verreauxi coronatus. Data suggest that in some parts of the region large numbers of lemurs may still be found (E. f. rufus 121 individuals per km2, E. mongoz (45), Lepilemur sp. (110), M. murinus (85) and P. v. coronatus (173)). No density data are provided for C. medius. In conclusion, as high lemur population densities may still be found and, in particular, P. v. coronatus is not known to exist in any protected area, Anjamena could serve as an important addition to the protected area system of north-west Madagascar.  相似文献

In temperate species, hibernation is enhanced by high levels of essential fatty acids in white adipose tissue. Essential fatty acids cannot be synthesized by mammals, thus nutritional ecology should play a key role in physiological adaptations to hibernation. Tropical hibernators are exposed to different physiological demands than hibernators in temperate regions and are expected to be subject to different constraints. The aims of this study were to assess whether or not the tropical hibernator Cheirogaleus medius shows biochemical changes in its white adipose tissue before and during hibernation. A capture-recapture study was combined with feeding observations in western Madagascar. Before and after hibernation, 77 samples of white adipose tissue from 57 individuals of C. medius, as well as dietary items eaten during pre-hibernation fattening, were sampled and analyzed for their fatty acid composition. In contrast to temperate hibernators, C. medius exhibits extremely low essential fatty acid concentrations in its white adipose tissue (2.5%) prior to hibernation. The fatty acid pattern of the white adipose tissue did not change during pre-hibernation fattening and did not reflect dietary fatty acid composition. During hibernation, fat stores showed only minor but significant compositional changes. Because of its prevalence, the main fuel during hibernation was the monounsaturated oleic acid, which seemed to be preferentially synthesized from dietary carbohydrates. Results suggest that essential fatty acids do not represent an ecological limitation for hibernation in the tropics, at least not in the fat-tailed dwarf lemur.  相似文献

Greater dwarf lemurs (Cheirogaleus major) are small nocturnal primates from the rain forests of eastern Madagascar. I investigated a population of Cheirogaleus major in a littoral rain forest of Southeast Madagascar during 2 rainy seasons to supplement the sparse information available for the species. I collected data on morphology, group composition, sleeping behavior, home range, and social organization via mark/recapture, radio telemetry, and focal individual observations. I identified 2 presumed family groups, and my data from radiotracking revealed a monogamous social organization. In each group, I found an adult pair and its presumed offspring sharing home ranges and sleeping sites together. I also observed gregarious behavior of group members during their nocturnal activity. I found no difference in body measurements between sexes, but body mass and tail circumference increased significantly from November to February, indicating a fatting period before hibernating.  相似文献

The fat-tailed dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus medius; Cheirogaleidae) lives in the tropical forests of Madagascar. It is exceptional among primates, because this small nocturnal lemur hibernates during the dry season from the end of April until October. This field study was carried out to assess seasonal changes in body mass and behavioral traits (locomotor activity, feeding ecology) of C. medius that enable this species to accumulate large quantities of fat within weeks. Feeding observations of 36 radio-collared individuals were combined with a mark-recapture study in western Madagascar during the rainy seasons from 1995 to 1998. Pulp of fruit species not consumed, as well as fruit species eaten by C. medius was analyzed for lipid and sugar contents. Body mass changes of recaptured individuals revealed that C. medius may double its body mass within a few weeks. Most of the increase in body mass took place between March and April after infants had been weaned and directly before the onset of hibernation. Locomotor activity was significantly reduced during the period of body mass gain. During the entire study, fruits, nectar, and flowers of 34 different plant species comprised about 80% of the diet, supplemented by a seasonally varying intake of animal prey. Lipid contents of consumed fruits were comparatively low throughout the study period. No difference in lipid content was detectable between fruit species consumed and not consumed by C. medius. During prehibernation fattening, C. medius consumed mostly fruit species with a high sugar content, significantly higher than that of fruit species that were not consumed. The results suggest that a reduction in locomotor activity as well as a preference for fruit species with a high sugar content enable C. medius to deposit large quantities of fat in a few weeks. According to present hypotheses on the evolution of life history traits and social systems in Malagasy lemurs, nocturnality and infant parking are associated with a solitary lifestyle and a polygynous mating system. However, theoretically extreme seasonality of reproduction could limit the number of females that can be monopolized by a given male and thus hinder the evolution of polygyny. The aim of this ongoing study is to test these contrasting expectations by looking at the social and mating system of the fat-tailed dwarf lemur Cheirogaleus medius . This species hibernates for up to 7 mo, so that time for breeding and raising offspring is extremely limited.
A mark-recapture study in western Madagascar was combined with observations and radio-tracking of 36 individuals during the rainy seasons from 1995 to 1998. According to these data, fat-tailed dwarf lemurs live in permanent sleeping groups consisting of a male and a female (n = 8) or one male and two females (n = 1). One or two offspring from the previous year were frequently observed to sleep together with an adult pair. Members of each sleeping group were the exclusive users of their nest holes and home ranges. During the birth season, males and females took turns at baby-sitting their offspring. Females without paternal help were unable to raise their offspring successfully. Since females did not exhibit oestrus synchrony, the ultimate selective factor favouring pair-living could be obligate paternal investment. The results, together with the lack of sexual size dimorphism and relatively small testis size, suggest that the fat-tailed dwarf lemur lives in family groups with a monogamous mating system. A review of the mating systems of nocturnal lemurs shows that monogamy appears to be the rule rather the exception.  相似文献

Plants producing toxic plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) deter folivores from feeding on them. Animals that can cope with noxious PSMs have a niche with a competitive advantage over other species. However, the ability to cope with toxic PSMs incurs the costs of detoxification. To assess possible compensations for the ingestion of toxic PSMs, we compare the chemical quality of plants consumed by bamboo lemurs (genera Hapalemur and Prolemur; strepsirrhine primates of Madagascar) in areas with and without bamboo. Some bamboo lemurs consume bamboo containing concentrations of cyanogenic substances 10–50 times above the average lethal dosage for mammals, and we postulate that animals consuming cyanogenic substances need supplementary protein or readily available energy for detoxification. We compared the chemical composition of food consumed by three species of bamboo lemurs that feed mainly (>80% of their time) on bamboo in the evergreen rainforest of Ranomafana (Madagascar) with published data of the diets of bamboo lemurs at two sites without highly cyanogenic plants (reed beds of Lac Alaotra and the evergreen littoral forest of Mandena) and with food of sympatric folivorous lemur species that do not feed on bamboo. Lemurs feeding on bamboo consumed up to twice as much protein as bamboo lemurs in areas without bamboo and sympatric lemur species that feed on leaves of trees. Concentrations of nonstructural carbohydrates (a source of energy) showed the opposite trend. This result supports the hypothesis that feeding on cyanogenic plants is linked to high protein intake, either as a source of protein or for sulfur-containing amino acids that can be used for detoxification. Owing to the high protein concentrations in bamboo, however, we cannot distinguish between the hypothesis that lemurs that eat bamboo target additional food items with higher protein from the hypothesis that lemurs feeding on bamboo unavoidably obtain higher concentrations of protein than animals feeding on leaves of trees, without an added nutritional benefit.  相似文献

Summary Food partitioning among lemurs was studied in relation to food patch size and plant chemistry in the eastern rainforest and a western deciduous forest of Madagascar. Patch size (i.e. crown diameter of food trees) is significantly correlated with group body weight of different lemur species. But intraspecific variability is high and prevents effective species separation. Chemical analyses of more than 400 plant parts eaten by seven different lemur species revealed major differences in their food choice with respect to protein concentrations, condensed tannins and alkaloids. Among the leaf eating lemurs discriminant analysis segregates three groups à two species based on chemical characteristics of their food. Whereas differences in food chemistry are pronounced between groups they are lacking between the two species within each group. The two species of each group avoid interference competition by different activity rhythms. Actual competition for slowly renewable resources such as leaves and fruit, however, can not be reduced by different activities. Here interspecific differences in gross categories of food, food species composition and different habitat utilization due to other constraints may contribute to the possible coexistence of species. Thus interspecific differences in food selection in relation to primary and secondary plant chemicals is an integrated part of the mechanisms allowing several primate species to coexist in sympatry.  相似文献

Studies of primate diets usually focus on differences that distinguish species or populations. However, variation in diet can occur at a more local level of groups within a population, especially in a non-homogeneous habitat. I compared dietary variation in food composition and toughness across groups of 2 lemur species in Beza Mahafaly special reserve, Madagascar. Beza Mahafaly contains an 80-ha reserve (Parcel 1) that, while small, hosts a dense population of Lemur catta (ring-tailed lemurs) and Propithecus verreauxi verreauxi (sifakas). Microhabitats in the eastern vs. western sides of the parcel are structurally and floristically distinct. Sifakas in this parcel have small, discrete home ranges and are morphological folivores. For these reasons, I expected that the 6 groups studied would eat a different menu of food plants but with similar toughness values. Ring-tailed lemurs have comparatively large, overlapping home ranges, and I expected that the 5 study groups would eat similar foods. Despite living in different microhabitats across the parcel, sifakas exhibit high dietary uniformity both in dietary plant species composition and the toughness of the foods. Food selection in sifakas operates on two distinct levels. Sifaka groups share many key food species that appear independent of local abundances, but the ranking of the foods within each group appears related to availability. Ring-tailed lemur groups are more heterogeneous in the composition of their diets relative to sifakas, though the time spent feeding on individual foods reveals a marked preference for the fruits of Tamarindus indica by all groups. Food toughness is consistent across the parcel with the exception of the most western group. Ring-tailed lemurs are highly specific feeders, but indiscriminate nibblers. Sifakas are targeted, balanced feeders. There does not appear to be a consistent microhabitat effect operating across species. Differences within sifaka and ring-tailed lemur populations in food composition and toughness, however, correspond to an east-west microhabitat gradient. Measures of dietary flexibility must take into account not only the plant species consumed and the different parts eaten but also their associated food properties and proportion of time spent feeding on them.  相似文献

Ambatorongorongo Mountain lies at the historical intersection betweenhumid, spiny, and littoral forests in southeastern Madagascar. We report theresults of surveys of the herpetofauna and lemurs occurring in Malahelo Forest,a small (<25 ha) forest fragment lying on the western slope ofAmbatorongorongo Mountain. There are at least 41 reptile, 11 amphibian, and 7lemur species in this forest, including several that are endemic to southeasternMadagascar and are at severe risk of extinction. The species richness of theMalahelo fauna is comparable to that of even the largest forest reserves in theregion. We also evaluate the similarity of the Malahelo herpetofauna to that ofnearby humid, spiny, and littoral forests to assess the biogeographic affinitiesof its amphibians and reptile assemblages. Both groups contain speciescharacteristic of each of the three surrounding forest types, but thebiogeographic patterns appear to differ for amphibians and reptiles. Overall,the herpetofauna and lemurs of the Malahelo Forest indicate that it is a remnantof a biogeographic transition zone between the major forest types ofsoutheastern Madagascar. The combination of high species richness, regionalendemics, and unique herpetofaunal and lemur assemblages should make MalaheloForest a high conservation priority, and we give recommendations for protectingwhat remains of this important transitional forest.  相似文献

Although some conservationists accept that not all species can be saved, we illustrate the difficulty in deciding which species are dispensable. In this article, we examine the possibility that the integrity of a forest relies on its entire faunal assemblage. In Madagascar, one faunal group, the lemurs, accounts for the greatest biomass and species richness among frugivores. For example, 7 of the 13 sympatric lemur species in Madagascar's eastern rainforests consume primarily fruit. Because of this, we suggest that some tree species may rely heavily on particular lemur taxa for both seed dispersal and germination. In Ranomafana National Park, the diets for four of the day-active lemur frugivores have been documented during annual cycles over a 5-year period. We predicted that, although the fruit of some plant taxa would be exploited by multiple lemur species, the fruit of others would be eaten by one lemur species alone. Analyses reveal that while lemurs overlap in a number of fruit taxa exploited, 46% (16/35) of families and 56% (29/52) of genera are eaten exclusively by one lemur species. We, therefore, predict local changes in forest composition and structure if certain of these lemur species are eliminated from a forest owing to hunting, disease, or habitat disturbance. We also suggest that this result may be of global significance because carbon sequestration by the tropical forests in Madagascar may be reduced as a result of this predicted change in forest composition.  相似文献

Detailed knowledge of the identity and distributions of extant species is essential for unravelling patterns and mechanisms of biodiversity, and it provides indispensable baseline data for conservation efforts. The taxonomy of the primates of Madagascar (Lemuriformes) has experienced drastic revisions in the last decades, with species numbers skyrocketing, especially in the genera Microcebus, Avahi, and Lepilemur. The dwarf lemurs (genus Cheirogaleus) have received less attention in terms of their taxonomy, even though they are closely related and syntopic with these diverse genera. The last revision of the genus was based on morphological data from museum specimens, and accepted seven species: Cheirogaleus medius, Cheirogaleus major, Cheirogaleus crossleyi, Cheirogaleus adipicaudatus, Cheirogaleus sibreei, Cheirogaleus ravus, and Cheirogaleus minusculus, whereas a more recent multilocus molecular study only detected three lineages: C. medius, C. major, and C. crossleyi. The goal of this study was to reassess the currently accepted taxonomy of the genus by examining six external and 32 craniodental characters of 120 museum specimens and 36 new specimens from the field. This study, in conjunction with a complementary molecular study, revealed lower diversity and a lower number of distinct morphs of dwarf lemurs than previously postulated. We conclude that in our sample there are three distinct morphs in the genus Cheirogaleus that correspond to C. medius, C. major, and C. crossleyi. We formally recognize C. adipicaudatus and C. ravus as synonyms of C. medius and C. major, respectively, and consider C. minusculus and C. sibreei to be potential synonyms of C. medius. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010.  相似文献

We investigated mechanical dietary properties of sympatric bamboo lemurs, Hapalemur g. griseus, H. aureus, and H. (Prolemur) simus, in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar. Each lemur species relies on bamboo, though previous behavioral observations found that they specialize on different parts of a common resource (Tan: Int J Primatol 20 1999 547–566; Tan: PhD dissertation 2000 State University of New York, Stony Brook). On the basis of these earlier behavioral ecology studies, we hypothesized that specialization on bamboo is related to differences in mechanical properties of specific parts. We quantified mechanical properties of individual plant parts from the diets of the bamboo lemur species using a portable tester. The diets of the Hapalemur spp. exhibited high levels of mechanical heterogeneity. The lemurs, however, could be segregated based on the most challenging (i.e., mechanically demanding) foods. Giant bamboo culm pith was the toughest and stiffest food eaten, and its sole lemur consumer, H. simus, had the most challenging diet. However, the mechanical dietary properties of H. simus and H. aureus overlapped considerably. In the cases where lemur species converged on the same bamboo part, the size of the part eaten increased with body size. Plant parts that were harvested orally but not necessarily masticated were the most demanding, indicating that food preparation may place significant loads on the masticatory apparatus. Finally, we describe how mechanical properties can influence feeding behavior. The elaborate procurement processes of H. simus feeding on culm pith and H. griseus and H. aureus feeding on young leaf bases are related to the toughnesses of protective coverings and the lemurs' exploitation of mechanical vulnerabilities in these plants. Chemical deterioration of teeth is common among modern humans, and has been suggested for some extinct primates. Dental erosion caused by acidic foods may also obscure microwear signals of mechanical food properties. Ring-tailed lemurs at the Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve (BMSR), Madagascar, display frequent severe tooth wear and subsequent tooth loss. In contrast, sympatric Verreaux's sifaka display far less tooth wear and infrequent tooth loss, despite both species regularly consuming acidic tamarind fruit. We investigated the potential impact of dietary acidity on tooth wear, collecting data on salivary pH from both species, as well as salivary pH from ring-tailed lemurs at Tsimanampesotse National Park, Madagascar. We also collected salivary pH data from ring-tailed lemurs at the Indianapolis Zoo, none of which had eaten for at least 12 hr before data collection. Mean salivary pH for the BMSR ring-tailed lemurs (8.098, n=41, SD=0.550) was significantly more alkaline than Verreaux's sifaka (7.481, n=26, SD=0.458). The mean salivary pH of BMSR (8.098) and Tsimanampesotse (8.080, n=25, SD=0.746) ring-tailed lemurs did not differ significantly. Salivary pH for the Indianapolis Zoo sample (8.125, n=16, SD=0.289) did not differ significantly from either the BMSR or Tsimanampesotse ring-tailed lemurs, but was significantly more alkaline than the BMSR Verreaux's sifaka sample. Regardless of the time between feeding and collection of pH data (from several minutes to nearly 1 hr), salivary pH for each wild lemur was above the "critical" pH of 5.5, below which enamel demineralization occurs. Thus, the high pH of lemur saliva suggests a strong buffering capacity, indicating the impact of acidic foods on dental wear is short-lived, likely having a limited effect. However, tannins in tamarind fruit may increase friction between teeth, thereby increasing attrition and wear in lemurs. These data also suggest that salivary pH varies between lemur species, corresponding to broad dietary categories.  相似文献

Malagasy primates of the genus Hapalemur are exceptional in their exhibition of specialisations allowing for a folivorous diet despite their small body size. Members of this group are well known for their preference for specific parts of woody bamboo, the primary food resource throughout much of their range. The southern gentle lemur (H. meridionalis), however, inhabits littoral forests that contain little or no woody bamboo. Similar to its closely related congener, the Alaotran gentle lemur (H. alaotrensis), the question is raised as to how these lemurs subsist in this ecological context. The aim of this study was to gain an initial understanding of the ecological niche of the southern gentle lemur in the threatened ecosystem of the littoral forest of southeastern Madagascar. Lemurs were habituated and observed over a 3-month period during the austral winter, allowing for collection of both continuous and instantaneous focal data on their feeding ecology. Preferred food species were identified and collected, and biochemical analyses determined macronutrient and secondary compound values for consumed food items. The diet of the southern gentle lemur was found to be of low nutritional quality, as evaluated through the low protein-to-fibre ratio, especially when compared with other folivores. This lemur is also unique in spending a majority of its time grazing on terrestrial grasses (family Poaceae) during the resource-poor winter months. Our data indicate that Hapalemur spp. possess a behavioural flexibility, and possibly, digestive abilities, higher than previously thought for an animal of its small body size.  相似文献

Parental care should evolve only if fitness benefits exceed fitness costs. In Cheirogaleus medius, a small nocturnal lemur of western Madagascar, we found the peculiar situation of considerable parental care by both sexes, combined with an extremely high rate of extra-pair young (EPY). In this paper, we try to elucidate the costs and benefits of parental care in C. medius, and we discuss hypotheses as to why males might actively participate in raising young, especially with regard to the high rate of EPY. The study was carried out in the dry deciduous forest of western Madagascar between 1996 and 2001. The most important components of parental care in C. medius are babysitting and guarding of the young. Observational data suggest that thermoregulatory demands during the first days after birth and defence from predators may be the driving factors selecting for this infant care behaviour. The reproducing individuals of both sexes incur considerable energetic costs by this behaviour, resulting in reduced fat stores and body condition in comparison to non-reproducing individuals. The reason why males also care for EPY remains elusive. We propose that males might not be able to detect individual relatedness and that they would jeopardise the survival of their own young if they gave no parental care. Alternatively, they might gain advantages other than direct fitness from raising EPY, for example if caring behaviour increases their chances in further reproduction, or if EPY are fathered by close kin.  相似文献

Edge effects are caused by the penetration of abiotic and biotic conditions from the matrix into forest interiors. Although edge effects influence the biogeography of many tropical organisms, they have not been studied directly in primates. Edge effects are particularly relevant to lemurs due to the loss of 80-90% of forests in Madagascar. In this study, data are presented on how biotic edge effects influenced the distribution and density of lemurs in the Vohibola III Classified Forest in southeastern Madagascar. In total, 415 lemur surveys were conducted during June-October 2003 and May-September 2004 along six 1,250-m transects that ran perpendicular to the forest edge. Data were also collected on lemur food trees along the six transects (density, height, diameter at breast height, area, volume, and distance to forest edge). Four nocturnal species (Avahi laniger, Cheirogaleus major, Lepilemur microdon, and Microcebus rufus) and four diurnal species (Eulemur rubriventer, Eulemur fulvus rufus, Hapalemur grisesus griseus, and Propithecus diadema edwardsi) were sighted during surveys. Regression analyses of lemur densities as a function of distance to forest edge provided edge tolerances for A. laniger (edge-tolerant), M. rufus (edge-tolerant), E. rubriventer (edge-tolerant or omnipresent), and H. g. griseus (omnipresent). The density and distribution of M. rufus and their foods trees were correlated. Edge-related variations in food quality and predation pressures may also be influencing lemurs in Vohibola III. Tolerance for edge effects may explain, in part, how lemurs have survived extreme habitat loss and forest fragmentation in southeastern Madagascar.  相似文献
