Four species belonging to Kickxellales (Kickxellomycotina) isolated from soil of Indonesia are described and illustrated. Two new species of Coemansia, C. asiatica and C. javaensis, were discovered in South Sulawesi and West Java, and two known species of Linderina, L. pennispora and L. macrospora, were discovered in East Kalimantan and South Sulawesi, respectively. These four species are newly added to the Indonesian mycobiota. A technique for inducing sporulation of C. javaensis and L. macrospora by adding substances derived from invertebrates such as aphids, nereids, or cladocerans to culture media is described.  相似文献

Mites in the genus Tropilaelaps are parasites of social honeybees. Two species, Tropilaelaps clareae and T. koenigerum, have been recorded and their primary hosts are presumed to be the giant honeybees of Asia, Apis dorsata and A. laboriosa. The most common species, T. clareae, is also an economically important pest of the introduced Western honeybee (A. mellifera) throughout Asia and is considered an emerging threat to world apiculture. In the studies reported here, genetic (mtDNA CO-I and nuclear ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 gene sequence) and morphological variation and host associations were examined among Tropilaelaps isolates collected from A. dorsata, A. laboriosa and A. mellifera throughout Asia and neighbouring regions. The results clearly indicate that the genus contains at least four species. Tropilaelaps clareae, previously assumed to be ubiquitous in Asia, was found to be two species, and it is here redefined as encompassing haplotypes (mites with distinct mtDNA gene sequences) that parasitise native A. dorsata breviligula and introduced A. mellifera in the Philippines and also native A. d. binghami on Sulawesi Island in Indonesia. Tropilaelaps mercedesae n. sp., which until now has been mistaken for T. clareae, encompasses haplotypes that, together with haplotypes of T. koenigerum, parasitise native A. d. dorsata in mainland Asia and Indonesia (except Sulawesi Island). It also parasitises introduced A. mellifera in these and surrounding regions and, with another new species, T. thaii n. sp., also parasitises A. laboriosa in mountainous Himalayan regions. Methods are described for identifying each species. These studies help to clarify the emerging threat of Tropilaelaps to world apiculture and will necessitate a revision of quarantine protocols for countries that import and export honeybees.  相似文献

Summary  Seven new names at species rank are proposed in Memecylon sect. Afzeliana Jacq.-Fél., a group of forest shrubs and small trees confined to Guineo-Congolian Africa. The group is centred in Cameroon, where 17 of the 20 species occur. A new flower type, the “star-flower” in Memecylon is revealed, and its taxonomic and ecological importance discussed. Three new, locally endemic species from the South West Province of Cameroon are described, mapped and illustrated: M. kupeanum R. D. Stone, Ghogue & Cheek, M. bakossiense R. D. Stone, Ghogue & Cheek, and M. rheophyticum R. D. Stone, Ghogue & Cheek. Two new names, M. accedens R. D. Stone, Ghogue & Cheek and M. hyleastrum R. D. Stone & Ghogue and one new combination, M. mamfeanum (Jacq.-Fél.) R. D. Stone, Ghogue & Cheek are provided at species level for three taxa originally proposed as varieties of M. afzelii G. Don. The taxon M. arcuatomarginatum var. simulans Jacq.-Fél. is also elevated to species status, as M. simulans (Jacq.-Fél.) R. D. Stone & Ghogue. Conservation assessments are provided for all the newly named taxa. A key is provided to the species of Memecylon sect. Afzeliana.  相似文献

Macaca, comprising 20 well-characterized species, represents the largest and one of the most ecologically and socially diverse of all the nonhuman primate genera. We report the discovery of a macaque that is new to science from the high altitudes of western Arunachal Pradesh, a biodiversity-rich state in northeastern India. We propose the scientific name Macaca munzala and the vernacular name Arunachal macaque for the species. It shares morphological characteristics independently with the Assamese macaque (Macaca assamensis) and with the Tibetan macaque M. thibetana; like them, it appears to belong to the sinica species-group of the genus. However, the species is distinctive in relative tail length, which is intermediate between those of Tibetan and Western Assamese macaques, the subspecies with which it is sympatric. It is also unique in its altitudinal distribution, occurring largely at altitudes between 2000 and 3500 m. We provide a morphological characterization of the species, report preliminary data on its field biology and discuss possible taxonomic identity in relation to the other closely-related species of Macaca.*This paper is dedicated to Dr. A. J. T. Johnsingh for his immense contributions to the study and conservation of India’s wildlife and for being an inspiration to a whole generation of students.  相似文献

Epidermal structures of three species of Periophthalmus (Ps.) and two species of Periophthalmodon (Pn.) were investigated in relation to their lifestyle. All species of both genera lack a dermal bulge, which species of other two oxudercine genera, Boleophthalmus and Scartelaos, have in their epidermis. In Periophthalmus and Periophthalmodon species, which are highly terrestrial, the middle cells are well developed in the epidermis and the capillaries are distributed in the surface of the epidermis on the head and dorsal body. In Periophthalmus species and Pn. septemradiatus, the capillaries and blood vessels are also distributed in the epidermis of the abdomen, superficially in Ps. modestus and deeply in other species. In Ps. modestus, the capillaries are also densely distributed on the surface of the epidermis in the caudal area, whereas in other species, the epidermal capillaries and blood vessels of this area are located deep with a very low density. In Pn. schlosseri, the epidermal capillaries are not found in either the abdominal area or caudal area. A comparison of the distribution of epidermal capillaries among Boleophthalmus, Periophthalmodon, Periophthalmus, and Scartelaos species revealed that the skin makes a larger contribution to respiration in the species having a more terrestrial lifestyle. Goblet mucous cells are completely lacking in Periophthalmus species, whereas slimelike materials were often found on the skin surface of Periophthalmus species. This finding suggests that Periophthalmus species have some unknown mechanism for producing mucus. In Pn. schlosseri, exposure of the dense capillary net on the surface of the head is likely to increase cutaneous respiration, but it also makes the fish an attractive target of bloodsucking insects.Supplementary material to this paper is available in electronic format at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10228-003-00173-7  相似文献

Polystichum is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex fern genera in China. The evolutionary relationships of Chinese Polystichum and related genera, and the relationship between our Polystichum phylogeny and ecogeographic distribution, were tested by the use of DNA sequence data. Fifty-one species of Polystichum and 21 species in allied genera were sequenced for the plastid intergenic spacers rps4-trnS and trnL-F. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses of both individual and combined data sets showed that Chinese Polystichum as commonly recognized was paraphyletic: one clade (the CCPC clade) included Cyrtomidictyum lepidocaulon, two Cyrtogonellum species, three Cyrtomium species, and a small number of Polystichum species usually occurring on limestone. A second clade, Polystichum sensu stricto, included the remainder of the Polystichum species; these often occur on non-limestone substrates. The remaining Cyrtomium species formed the third clade. Three subclades resolved within Polystichum sensu stricto (s.s.) clade do not correspond with recent sectional classifications, and we outline the issues relevant to a new classification for the genus. Summary  A taxonomic revision of the palm genus Podococcus (Arecaceae) is presented. Two species are recognised: P. barteri, a species relatively widespread in a coastal band from Nigeria to the D. R. Congo and P. acaulis, a species previously considered conspecific to P. barteri, almost exclusively confined to Gabon. The taxonomic history, morphology, distribution and conservation status of the genus and each species are discussed  相似文献

In the savanna-like Brazilian biome caatinga, the arboreal and polydomous ant Crematogaster brevispinosa rochai can be found cohabiting with two closely related Nasutitermes species (N. corniger and N. ephratae). This ant occupies variably sized portions of the termite nests and maintains a physical separation with its hosts by plugging the cells of the boundary areas with fibrous material. Although all the analysed cohabiting C. b. rochai nests were queenless, they always contained brood, especially from male and female reproductive castes. Interaction experiments between workers of C. b. rochai and workers or soldiers of N. ephratae revealed a low level of aggressiveness between the two species that contrasts with the aggressiveness of both C. b. rochai and N. ephratae in encounters with other ant (Azteca cf. chartifex, Cephalotes pusillus) or termite (M. cf. indistinctus) species. The association could benefit both ants (additional nesting sites, brood rearing places) and termites (protection against predators, dead ants or ant refuses as source of nitrogen).  相似文献

Phylogenetic relations within the genus Gordonia were analyzed using partial gyrB and secA1 gene sequences of 23 type species in comparison with those of 16S rRNA gene. The gyrB and secA1 phylogenies showed agreement with that constructed using 16S rRNA gene sequences. The degrees of divergence of the gyrB and secA1 genes were approximately 3.4 and 1.7 times greater, respectively, than that of 16S rRNA gene. The gyrB gene showed more discriminatory power than either the secA1 or 16S rRNA gene, facilitating clear differentiation of any two Gordonia species using gyrB gene analysis. Our data indicate that gyrB and secA1 gene sequences are useful as markers for phylogenetic study and identification at the species level of the genus Gordonia.  相似文献

Summary  A new species of Macroptilium sect. Microcochle (Benth.) J. A. Lackey is herein described from the states of Piauí and Bahia, Brazil. Macroptilium cochleatum is characterized by few-flowered inflorescences, calyx teeth longer than the tube, a tightly four-coiled keel, and linear, patent fruits. The discovery of this unique Macroptilium species, with its distally coiled keel, expands the diagnostic features of the genus. A key to the Brazilian species of sect. Microcochle is provided.  相似文献

In the Northeast and the Northwest Pacific, 26 and 68 species of Sebastes occur, respectively, the similar appearance of some pairs of shallow coastal water species in the two regions having been interpreted as evidence either for migration of ancestral species or of morphological convergence. To distinguish between these competing hypotheses, a portion of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) cytochrome b gene was sequenced from 23 species of Sebastes from the Northwest Pacific and phylogenetic trees constructed so as to include the existing data from Northeastern species of Sebastes. The results clearly indicated separate origins for external morphology in Northeast and Northwest Pacific species. The shallow coastal water species in the Northwest Pacific are thought to have diverged from about 9.8MYA. Furthermore, the phylogenetic position of Sebastes was inferred among the subfamily Sebastinae, Helicolenus, Hozukius, Sebastes, and Sebastiscus, the results suggesting that Helicolenus and Hozukius are more closely related to Sebastes than Sebastiscus.  相似文献
