The effects of NaCl stress on the growth and photosynthetic characters of Ulmus pumila L. seedlings were investigated under sand culture condition. With increasing NaCl concentration, main stem height, branch number, leaf number, and leaf area declined, while Na+ content and the Na+/K+ ratio in both expanded and expanding leaves increased. Na+ content was significantly higher in expanded leaves than in those just expanding. Chlorophyll (Chl) a and Chl b contents declined as NaCl concentration increased. The net photosynthetic rate, intercellular CO2 concentration, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate also declined, but stomatal limitation value increased as NaCl concentration increased. Both the maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry and the effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry declined as NaCl concentration rose. These results suggest that the accumulation of Na+ in already expanded leaves might reduce damage to the expanding leaves and help U. pumila endure high salinity. The reduced photosynthesis in response to salt stress was mainly caused by stomatal limitation.

Salt stress perturbs a multitude of physiological processes such as photosynthesis and growth. To understand the biochemical changes associated with physiological and cellular adaptations to salinity, two lettuce varieties (Verte and Romaine) were grown in a hydroponics culture system supplemented with 0, 100 or 200 mM NaCl. Verte displayed better growth under 100 mM NaCl compared to Romaine, but both genotypes registered relatively similar reductions in growth under 200 mM NaCl treatment. Both varieties showed differences in net photosynthetic activity in the absence of salt and 8 days after salt treatment. These differences diminished subsequently under prolonged salt stress (14 days). Verte showed enhanced leaf proline and restricted total cations especially Na+, lesser malondialdehyde (MDA) formation and lignification in the roots under 100 mM NaCl salinity. Membrane damage estimated by electrolyte leakage increased with elevated salt concentrations in roots of both varieties, but Verte had significantly lower electrolyte leakage relative to Romaine under 100 mM NaCl. Moreover, Verte also accumulated greater levels of carotenoids under increasing NaCl concentrations compared to Romaine. Taken together, these findings suggest that the greater tolerance of Verte to 100 mM NaCl is related to the more restricted accumulation of total cations and toxic Na+ in the roots and enhanced levels of antioxidative metabolites in root and leaf tissue.

Hydroponically grown cucumber plants were exposed to 14-d period of salinity (0, 50, 100 mM NaCl). NaCl caused reduction in the relative water content in the leaves. The Na+ content increased and the K+ content decreased. The net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate were markedly decreased by all of the salt treatments. Salinity decreased also the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS 2) determined as the variable to maximum fluorescence ratio, the photochemical quantum yield of PS 2 and the photochemical fluorescence quenching, while the non-photochemical quenching increased. Above results indicate that NaCl affects photosynthesis through both stomata closure and non-stomatal factors.

Salinization usually plays a primary role in soil degradation, which consequently reduces agricultural productivity. In this study, the effects of salinity on growth parameters, ion, chlorophyll, and proline content, photosynthesis, antioxidant enzyme activities, and lipid peroxidation of two cotton cultivars, [CCRI-79 (salt tolerant) and Simian 3 (salt sensitive)], were evaluated. Salinity was investigated at 0 mM, 80 mM, 160 mM, and 240 mM NaCl for 7 days. Salinity induced morphological and physiological changes, including a reduction in the dry weight of leaves and roots, root length, root volume, average root diameter, chlorophyll and proline contents, net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance. In addition, salinity caused ion imbalance in plants as shown by higher Na+ and Cl contents and lower K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ concentrations. Ion imbalance was more pronounced in CCRI-79 than in Simian3. In the leaves and roots of the salt-tolerant cultivar CCRI-79, increasing levels of salinity increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR), but reduced catalase (CAT) activity. The activities of SOD, CAT, APX, and GR in the leaves and roots of CCRI-79 were higher than those in Simian 3. CAT and APX showed the greatest H2O2 scavenging activity in both leaves and roots. Moreover, CAT and APX activities in conjunction with SOD seem to play an essential protective role in the scavenging process. These results indicate that CCRI-79 has a more effective protection mechanism and mitigated oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation by maintaining higher antioxidant activities than those in Simian 3. Overall, the chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and Chl (a+b) contents, net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance, SOD, CAT, APX, and GR activities showed the most significant variation between the two cotton cultivars.

The effects of low and moderate salinity (100 and 200 mM NaCl, respectively) and iso-osmotic stress generated by polyethylene glycol PEG (1) (–0.3 MPa) and PEG (2) (–0.6 MPa) on maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII), growth, photosynthesis, transpiration, dark respiration, water use efficiency (WUE), water content, chlorophyll, proline, Na+ and K+ concentrations were investigated in shoots of two ecotypes С3–С4 xero-halophyte Bassia sedoides (Pall.) Aschers. Plants were grown from seeds of two Southern Urals populations (Makan and Podolsk) differing in their bioproductivity. Aboveground biomass of the Makan plants was approximately 10-fold higher than that of the Podolsk ecotype. The plants of both ecotypes were sensitive to water deficit. They showed similar decrease in biomass, water content, net photosynthesis and transpiration intensity under both low and moderate osmotic stress (PEG). However, the content of сhlorophyll and free proline in shoots of the Podolsk plants increased under moderate osmotic stress (PEG(2)). Under salinity the differences between transpiration, Fv/Fm, WUE, water content, chlorophyll and proline concentrations in shoots of two ecotypes were no found. But, the Podolsk plants showed decrease in the growth parameters (1.5-fold), increase in the dark respiration intensity (2-fold) and the Na+/K+ ratio (1.2-fold) under moderate salinity (200 mM NaCl). Thus, the reduction of bioproductivity of the Podolsk ecotype under salinity was the result of ionic rather than osmotic factor of salinity. In the Podolsk plants the additional transpiration costs and consumption of assimilates (correspondingly) increased with the toxic sodium ion accumulation under salinity. This led to decrease in the growth parameters. Thus, two B. sedoides ecotypes have different adaptive strategies of tolerance to the ionic factor of salt stress at the level of the physiological processes associated with the dark CO2 gas exchange. Moreover, in less tolerant and productive Podolsk ecotype the increase in proline content in shoots characterized comparatively low adaptation to osmotic factor, and the increase in dark respiration and the Na+/K+ ratio pointed to relatively low resistance to ion factor of salinity as compared with the Makan ecotype.

Soil salinity is mainly caused by excessive use of fertilizers and the use of poor quality water, and adversely affected crop growth especially when grown in protected environments. Soil salinity causes salt stress in plants, which inhibits plant growth, leading to morphological, metabolic and physiological changes. Though it is a major problem occurs more frequently, there is less information on the behavior of calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) under these conditions, and most studies are conducted with other species of the genus Zantesdeschia. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate ecophysiological, biochemical and anatomical growth responses of calla lily plants to salt stress. Rhizomes were grown in trays containing coconut fiber as a substrate and treated with 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mM NaCl to induce stress. A decrease in plant height was observed, as well as in the number of tillers and leaves, main root length, fresh and dry matter of the shoot and root system. A reduction in photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate was observed at 60 days. However, after 90 days, the photosynthetic rate was unchanged, with increased stomatal conductance and transpiration rate for plants exposed to 75 mM NaCl. Salt stress caused a higher accumulation of carbohydrates in shoots and roots. Thus, high concentrations of NaCl affect the development of calla lily, indicating that this species is susceptible to salt stress.

To determine the effects of vermicompost leachate (VCL) on resistance to salt stress in plants, young tomato seedlings (Solanum lycopersicum, cv. Ailsa Craig) were exposed to salinity (150 mM NaCl addition to nutrient solution) for 7 days after or during 6 mL L??1 VCL application. Salt stress significantly decreased leaf fresh and dry weights, reduced leaf water content, significantly increased root and leaf Na+ concentrations, and decreased K+ concentrations. Salt stress decreased stomatal conductance (gs), net photosynthesis (A), instantaneous transpiration (E), maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry in the dark-adapted state (Fv/Fm), photochemical quenching (qP), and actual PSII photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII). VCL applied during salt stress increased leaf fresh weight and gs, but did not reduce leaf osmotic potential, despite increased proline content in salt-treated plants. VCL reduced Na+ concentrations in leaves (by 21.4%), but increased them in roots (by 16.9%). VCL pre-treatment followed by salt stress was more efficient than VCL concomitant to salt stress, since VCL pre-treatment provided the greatest osmotic adjustment recorded, with maintenance of net photosynthesis and K+/Na+ ratios following salt stress. VCL pre-treatment also led to the highest proline content in leaves (50 µmol g??1 FW) and the highest sugar content in roots (9.2 µmol g??1 FW). Fluorescence-related parameters confirmed that VCL pre-treatment of salt-stressed plants showed higher PSII stability and efficiency compared to plants under concomitant VCL and salt stress. Therefore, VCL represents an efficient protective agent for improvement of salt-stress resistance in tomato.

Responses of Puccinellia distans, a halophytic grass to low (50 mM) and high (200 mM) NaCl salinity, were studied in a sand culture experiment without or with inoculation by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), Claroideoglomus etunicatum isolated from its saline habitat. Plant biomass was not influenced by salinity levels, while a tendency to a higher biomass was observed in AMF plants under both control and saline conditions. Leaf photosynthesis increased by both salinity and AMF inoculation. Despite higher transpiration rate, AMF plants had higher water-use efficiency under sever saline conditions. AMF inoculation decreased proline concentration, but increased significantly leaf osmotic potential. Antioxidative enzymes responded differently to the salt and AMF treatments depending on the salt concentration and plant organ. Nonetheless, salt-induced malondialdehyde accumulation in the leaves diminished by AMF colonization. K and Ca contents were not affected by salt, while fungal colonization increased K in the roots and Ca in both leaves and roots. Our results indicated that enhancement of photosynthesis and ion homeostasis is involved in the tolerance of P. distans to both low and high salinity. AMF inoculation increased plants’ tolerance by augmentation of the above mechanisms accompanied by improvement of water relations and protection against oxidative damage in the leaves.
