We examined levels of limb injury in the red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus at 3 sites in the coastal waters of the Barents Sea. High incidences of autotomy were registered at all sites examined averaging 46.6% in Dolgaya Bay (DLB), 42.6% in Yarnyshnaya Bay (YRB) and 45.6% in Dalnezelenetskaya Bay (DZB). These levels were greater than in deep waters of the Barents Sea. Significant inter-annual increases in limb loss rates were observed in DZB. The positive correlation of autotomy frequency with the body size was observed for the females in YRB and DZB. The frequency of autotomy was independent of sex for all sites and size groups except for the crabs with CL > 135 mm in DZB where the females had autotomized limbs more often than the males. The chance of injury was higher for posterior legs. Right-side limbs (especially, claws) were lost more often than left-side limbs. The observed frequency of crabs within limb loss patterns did not differ significantly from the expected levels in P. camtschaticus collected in DLB and in YRB but was significantly different than a frequency expected if limb losses were independent in DZB. Our results suggest that crabs in DZB are more affected by limb-inducing factors than individuals from DLB or YRB. The main factors affecting limb injuries in P. camtschaticus in the coastal Barents Sea are predator pressure (mainly for immature crabs), and illegal fishing and recreational diving (for mature crabs).  相似文献

Summary This study is the first to demonstrate experimentally that autotomy (self-amputation of a body part) adversely affects competition for mates. Experiments were conducted using blue crabs Callinectes sapidus Rathbun to examine the consequences of limb loss and pairing precedence on mate acquisition by males. Two adult males of equivalent size were introduced sequentially into pools containing a sexually-receptive female and observed after 24 h and 48 h. One male in each pair was left intact, while the other experienced: (1) no autotomy, (2) autotomy of one cheliped, or (3) autotomy of both chelipeds, one walking leg, and one swimming leg. In the absence of a competitor (first 24 h), both intact and injured males established precopulatory embraces with females. Intact males were highly successful (84–95%) in defending females from intact or injured intruders in the second 24 h period. Both autotomy treatments, however, significantly reduced the ability of males to defend females from intact intruders. Females in experiments suffered greater frequency of limb loss than did males. In the field, paired blue crabs showed significantly higher incidence of limb loss than unpaired crabs. Limb loss frequency increases with body size, and field observations indicated that larger males may be more successful than smaller males in obtaining females. Both experimental manipulations and field studies provide strong evidence for mate competition in this ecologically and commercially important portunid species.  相似文献

This study examined properties of chemoreceptor neurons in the claws and legs of the fiddler crabs Uca pugilator and U. pugnax. The primary goal was to establish the neural basis of previously observed greater female sensitivity to feeding stimulants, and secondarily to compare physiological properties of chemoreceptor neurons in these semi-terrestrial crustaceans with those of fully aquatic forms. Sensitivity of chemoreceptor neurons in claws and legs is sex-specific; individual neurons of females respond to lower stimulus concentrations than male chemoreceptor neurons, and equivalent concentrations elicit greater spiking in female vs male chemoreceptor neurons. Thus, the population of chemoreceptor neurons in females expresses lower thresholds and greater average sensitivity than in males. Greater sensitivity of claw neurons explains observations indicating that females continue to feed at food levels too low to stimulate males. Sensitivity differences in leg neurons of males vs females have no clear behavioral correlate, but suggest that females can orient to more dilute stimuli than males. Chemoreceptor neurons of fiddler crabs have low sensitivities and slow rates of adaptation compared to other crustaceans. Also, neurons in claws adapt less slowly than neurons in legs, which may reflect subtle differences in the chemical stimulus environment experienced by claws vs legs.  相似文献

Molting and regeneration of lost appendages are tightly-coupled,hormonally-regulated processes in decapod crustaceans. Precociousmolts are induced by eyestalk ablation, which reduces circulatingmolt-inhibiting hormone (MIH) and results in an immediate risein hemolymph ecdysteroids. Precocious molts are also inducedby autotomy of 5–8 walking legs; adult land crabs (Gecarcinuslateralis) molt 6–8 wk after multiple leg autotomy (MLA).Autotomy of one or more of the 1° limb buds (LBs) that formafter MLA before a critical period interrupts proecdysis until2° LBs re-regenerate and grow to the approximate size ofthose lost. Based on these observations, Skinner proposed thatlimb buds produce two factors that control proecdysial events.Limb Autotomy Factor–Anecdysis (LAFan), produced by 1°LBs when at least five legs are autotomized, stimulates anecdysialanimals to enter proecdysis. Limb Autotomy Factor–Proecdysis(LAFpro), produced by 2° LBs in premolt animals when atleast one 1° LB is autotomized, inhibits proecdysial processes.Initial characterizations suggest that LAFpro is a MIH-likepolypeptide that inhibits the synthesis and secretion of ecdysteroidby the Y-organs.  相似文献

The behaviour of the spider crab Inachus phalangium (Fabricius, 1775), which lives in association with the sea anemone Anemonia sulcata (Pennant), was studied in the field. The crab was found in the littoral zone of the Mediterranean Sea near Banyuls sur Mer, France, in the whole depth range studied (0.5–25 m). The crabs had a long-lasting association with individual Anemonia sulcata, occasionally with Aiptasia mutabilis. Most crabs were found in association with the same anemone for several days, some crabs were found in association with the same anemone for longer than one month. In the areas studied, on average 65 Inachus phalangium were found on 100 anemones. Crabs released in the vicinity of anemones moved towards them and entered them. Inachus phalangium could walk between the tentacles of Anemonia sulcata and Aiptasia mutabilis without eliciting feeding reactions of the anemone. The crabs left the anemones for moulting. After moulting masking material was removed from the exuvia and used again. The animals returned into an anemone while still soft. Material used for masking, usually algae, could be picked off the body and eaten. Masking material may be a food reservoir in addition to providing camouflage. Anemones were left only during night-time. The crabs left their anemone to moult, to feed in the vicinity, fleeing from larger conspecifics, and to migrate to a different anemone. Outside the anemone's protection Inachus was eaten by several species of fish. Individuals appeared to avoid each other. 57% of all animals were found alone on an anemone. Large males and females were more frequently found alone than were small males and females. Fights were observed between members of the same and of the opposite sex. During fights, legs and claws could be torn off. Adult males migrated more often between anemones and moved over larger distances when migrating than did adult females. Adult males probably migrated in search of sexually mature females. Such a roving strategy is evolutionarily stable only when the higher costs (in terms of energy expenditure and mortality) are compensated for by a higher number of offspring than produced in the alternative, pair-bonding strategy.  相似文献

Both male and female field crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) autotomize front (tympanal) limbs more slowly than hind limbs. Arguably, this pattern could reflect possible differences in the mechanism of limb autotomy. However, we demonstrate that, for females, limb autotomy is also dependent on their mating status: virgin females autotomize front legs significantly more slowly than mated females. This response suggests a central control for leg autotomy in these animals, and less readiness to autotomize a front leg, possibly because the tympanum is crucial for mate location.  相似文献

A total of 1023 individuals of the common shore crab, Carcinus maenas (L.), were obtained from the environs of Whitby Harbour and Robin Hood's Bay. The bulk of the sample was taken from the sublittoral zone, but crabs from a sheltered shore were included. Each crab was measured, sexed and examined for the incidence of autotomized and regenerated limbs.There was a positive correlation between the incidence of autotomy and carapace width for crabs in both the sublittoral zone and the exposed intertidal zone. In sublittoral crabs the males suffered a higher incidence of autotomy than did the females and the incidence of cheliped autotomy was higher than for the walking limbs. The discrepancy between the loss of the chelipeds and walking limbs was reflected in a similar disparity between the occurrence of the regenerated chelipeds and walking limbs.Crabs on an exposed shore suffered a higher incidence of autotomy than did those from a sheltered shore. There were more crabs with cumulative limb losses than would be expected which suggests that once a crab enters into a state of autotomy it becomes increasingly vulnerable to the loss of another limb. Only 1 % of the population of sublittoral crabs would be expected to carry the loss of five limbs at once. No crabs were found with six or more limbs missing.  相似文献

Finding shelter and surviving encounters with predators are pervasive challenges for animals. These challenges may be exacerbated after individuals experience bodily damage. Certain forms of damage arise voluntarily in animals; for instance, some taxa release appendages (tails, legs, or other body parts) as a defensive strategy (“autotomy”). This behavior, however, may pose long‐term negative consequences for habitat use and survival. Additionally, these putative consequences are expected to vary according to the function of the lost body part. We tested the effects of losing different functional leg types (locomotor or sensory) on future habitat use and survival in a Neotropical species of Prionostemma harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones) that undergo frequent autotomy but do not regrow limbs. Daytime surveys revealed that both eight‐legged harvestmen and harvestmen missing legs roosted in similar frequencies across habitats (tree bark, mossy tree, or fern), and perched at similar heights. Mark–recapture data showed that harvestmen that lost sensory legs roosted in tree bark less frequently, but on mossy trees more frequently. On the contrary, we did not observe changes in habitat use for eight‐legged animals or animals that lost locomotor legs. This change might be related to sensory exploration and navigation. Lastly, we found that recapture rates across substrates were not affected by the type of legs lost, suggesting that leg loss does not impact survival. This potential lack of effect might play a role in why a defensive strategy like autotomy is so prevalent in harvestmen despite the lack of regeneration.  相似文献

Theory predicts a trade‐off between sexually selected weapons used to secure mates and post‐copulatory traits used to maximize fertilization success. However, individuals that have a greater capacity to acquire resources from the environment may invest more in both pre‐ and post‐copulatory traits, and trade‐offs may not be readily apparent. Here, we manipulate the phenotype of developing individuals to examine allocation trade‐offs between weapons and testes in Mictis profana (Hemiptera: Coreidae), a species where the hind legs are sexually selected weapons used in contests over access to females. We experimentally prevented males from developing weapons by inducing them to autotomize their hind legs before the final moult to adulthood. We compared trait expression in this group to males where autotomy was induced in the mid‐legs, which are presumably not under sexual selection to the same extent. We found males without weapons invested proportionally more in testes mass than those with their mid‐legs removed. Males that developed to adulthood without weapons did not differ from the mid‐leg removal group in other traits potentially under precopulatory sexual selection, other post‐copulatory traits or naturally selected traits. In addition, a sample of adult males from the same population in the wild revealed a positive correlation between investment in testes and weapons. Our study presents a critical contribution to a growing body of literature suggesting the allocation of resources to pre‐ and post‐copulatory sexual traits is influenced by a resource allocation trade‐off and that this trade‐off may only be revealed with experimental manipulation.  相似文献

In laboratory bioassays, male Pseudococcus viburni (Signoret) and Planococcus ficus Signoret were attracted to body sections of females that included the metathoracic legs. Extracts of the metathoracic legs of female P. ficus were much more attractive to males than extracts of the other legs, and males exhibited copulatory behavior towards these extracts. Scanning electron microscopy showed the presence of translucent pores on the coxae of mature but not immature females. Collectively, the data suggest that the female-produced sex pheromones of these species are released from the metathoracic legs, probably from the translucent pores.  相似文献

Autotomy is a taxonomically widespread antipredator tactic that allows animals to escape life-threatening situations. Opposing the benefits of survival, animals that have autotomized appendages may later suffer reduced ability in important determinants of fitness. Male Schizocosa ocreata wolf spiders use their forelegs during courtship for visual displays, for tactile courtship, and to defend against attacks by females. In nature they are often found missing one, and sometimes both, forelegs. We found that autotomy of one foreleg has little effect on male ability to mate with virgin females, but that autotomy of both forelegs causes a significant reduction in mating success. Among males that mated, autotomy of one or both forelegs did not influence latency until mating, period spent mounted, probability that his mate would accept a subsequent suitor, or probability that his mate would kill a subsequent suitor.  相似文献

Changes in the carotenoid content in gonads of two sea urchins species were investigated during maturation. The content of echinenones and carotenes, the two major carotenoid fractions in gonads, is highest for Strongylocentrotus intermedius at the spawning gametogenic stage of gonad maturation for both sexes. For S. nudus, the content of these pigments is highest at stages of active gametogenesis and spawning for males and at the growth stage for females. A comparison of the carotenoid content dynamics during maturation of gonads for males, females and animals at the resting (sexual inactivity) stage was also carried out.  相似文献

Non-biological ornamentation is found in the nests and burrows of different kinds of animals. We evaluated here whether sand hoods constructed by male fiddler crabs (Uca leptodactyla) are one of the signals used by males to attract females during courtship. We observed females when they were walking among the males, and we quantified the proportion of females that visited male burrows with and without ornamentation and the choice to stay in a male’s burrow. Females visited more burrows with hoods than burrows without hoods, and they chose significantly more builder males. Male investment in ornamentation nevertheless decreased when the proportion of females increased in the area. Male investment was not correlated with the proportion of non-builder males nearby, but was positively correlated with overall density. The density sex ratio, however, was more male-biased in high-density than in low-density areas suggesting that even if building attracts females, the function could be related to male competition for mates.  相似文献

In many animals, females prefer large males to small males, which allow large males to be choosier than small males when selecting a mate. We investigated the courtship intensity of small- and large-sized male fiddler crabs (Austruca perplexa) by examining their claw-waving rates (waves/min) towards small- and large-sized females. We found that large males showed a greater preference for large females by producing more waves/min towards them, whereas small males did not show any apparent preference for either large or small females. Moreover, the waving rate of large males was positively correlated with female size, but there was no correlation between waving rate and female size in small males. These results indicate that large males in a population become choosier and show strong mate choice, which is most likely due to their greater preference among females.  相似文献

Autotomy, voluntary shedding of body parts to permit escape, is a theoretically interesting defense because escape benefit is offset by numerous costs, including impaired future escape ability. Reduced sprint speed is a major escape cost in some lizards. We predicted that tail loss causes decreased speed in males and previtellogenic females, but not vitellogenic females already slowed by mass gain. In the striped plateau lizard, Sceloporus virgatus , adults of both sexes are subject to autotomy, and females undergo large increases in body condition (mass/length) during vitellogenesis. Time required for running 1 m was similar in intact autotomized males and previtellogenic females, but increased by nearly half after autotomy. Vitellogenic females were slower than other lizards when intact, but their speed was unaffected by autotomy. Following autotomy, speeds of all groups were similar. Thus, speed costs of autotomy vary with sex and reproductive condition: decreased running speed is not a cost of autotomy in vitellogenic females or presumably gravid females. Costs of autotomy are more complex than previously known. Speed and other costs might interact in unforseen ways, making it difficult to predict whether strategies to compensate for diminished escape ability differ with reproductive condition in females.  相似文献

Autotomy, the self‐induced loss of a body part, occurs throughout Animalia. A lizard dropping its tail to escape predation is an iconic example, however, autotomy occurs in a diversity of other organisms. Octopuses can release their arms, crabs can drop their claws, and bugs can amputate their legs. The diversity of organisms that can autotomize body parts has led to a wealth of research and several taxonomically focused reviews. These reviews have played a crucial role in advancing our understanding of autotomy within their respective groups. However, because of their taxonomic focus, these reviews are constrained in their ability to enhance our understanding of autotomy. Here, we aim to synthesize research on the ecology and evolution of autotomy throughout Animalia, building a unified framework on which future studies can expand. We found that the ability to drop an appendage has evolved multiple times throughout Animalia and that once autotomy has evolved, selection appears to act on the removable appendage to increase the efficacy and/or efficiency of autotomy. This could explain why some autotomizable body parts are so elaborate (e.g. brightly coloured). We also show that there are multiple benefits, and variable costs, associated with autotomy. Given this variation, we generate an economic theory of autotomy (modified from the economic theory of escape) which makes predictions about when an individual should resort to autotomy. Finally, we show that the loss of an autotomizable appendage can have numerous consequences on population and community dynamics. By taking this broad taxonomic approach, we identified patterns of autotomy that transcend specific lineages and highlight clear directions for future research.  相似文献

Strategies used by tailless individualsto enhance survival in natural populations are still poorlyunderstood. We experimentally examine tail loss in large, dominantmales of Psammodromus algirus in the middle of the breedingseason in the field. We report data showing home range reductionof large dominant males after autotomy, reduction in the numberof females in the home ranges of manipulated males, and a potentialincrease in mating opportunities of small subordinate maleswith complete tails. The ease of autotomy in Hemigrapsus oregonensis was tested by crushing the propodite of each walking leg. Individual curves of percent autotomy in groups of 18–21 animals were drawn for six different sequences of stimulation. Lumped data show peaks in ease of autotomy for the third anatomical leg of each side and for the second leg stimulated regardless of anatomical position. Later autotomies are more severely depressed when the stimulation sequence is from posterior to anterior. Segmental and lateral interaction and the characteristics of individual responses suggest that autotomy of legs in the crab, while depending upon specific structural features of the legs, is less a unisegmental reflex, than an accident occurring during escape.  相似文献

Costly sexually selected weapons are predicted to trade off with postcopulatory traits, such as testes. Although weapons can be important for achieving access to females, individuals of some species can permanently drop (i.e. autotomize) their weapons, without regeneration, to escape danger. We capitalized on this natural behavior to experimentally address whether the loss of a sexually selected weapon leads to increased testes investment in the leaf‐footed cactus bug, Narnia femorata Stål (Hemiptera: Coreidae). In a second experiment, we measured offspring production for males that lost a weapon during development. As predicted, males that dropped a hind limb during development grew significantly larger testes than the control treatments. Hind‐limb autotomy did not result in the enlargement of other nearby traits. Our results are the first to experimentally demonstrate that males compensate for natural weapon loss by investing more in testes. In a second experiment we found that females paired with males that lost a hind limb had 40% lower egg hatching success than females paired with intact males, perhaps because of lower mating receptivity to males with a lost limb. Importantly, in those cases where viable offspring were produced, males missing a hind limb produced 42% more offspring than males with intact limbs. These results suggest that the loss of a hind‐limb weapon can, in some cases, lead to greater fertilization success.  相似文献

Sexual selection has often been dichotomized into intersexual and intrasexual components of selection, favoring ornaments and weapons, respectively. Here, we show that a weapon used in male–male combat is sometimes also used in a functionally similar manner for grasping females during mating. The hind legs of adult males of some species of Pristoceuthophilus camel crickets have strongly bent tibia and stout femora with two large conspicuous spines. Here, we show that (1) leg armature is positively allometric, (2) males use these leg modifications when fighting other males, (3) males sometimes use the same leg modifications in the same functional manner for grabbing and holding females for mating, (4) virgin females show more interest in males than do non‐virgin females, and (5) males are more likely to use their leg modifications to grab and hold females when paired with non‐virgin females than when paired with virgin females. We interpret these results as suggesting that males employ an alternative coercive mating strategy when paired with unreceptive females; alternative explanations are also discussed.  相似文献
