On the basis of ichthyoplankton surveys made in June 2004–2005 and 2007, June–July 2010, and July 2011 in these bays and beyond them (in open waters of the White Sea Basin and adjacent areas of the Gorlo) larvae of White Sea herring were absent. Principal aggregations of larvae are found in the Kandalaksha Bay in June 2004–2005 and 2007. In the Onega Bay and in the Dvina Bay surveyed in June 2007 abundance of larvae was ratter low and in June–July 2010 and July 2011 in these bays and beyond them (in open waters of the White Sea Basin and adjacent areas of the Gorlo) larvae of White Sea herring were absent. Within the Kandalasksha Bay, from year to year, there were two disconnected aggregations of larvae. The space between them was situated in the open part of the bay along the transect of the Chupa Estuary and the Umba Estuary. One of the aggregations of larvae occupied the tail of the bay, and the second aggregation occupied the ante-mouth and mouth areas of the Chupa Estuary. It is supposed that these aggregations result from spawning of two independent spawning groups of the White Sea herring spawning in isolated regions of the Kandalaksha Bay. Presence of the bulk of larvae of the White Sea herring within the limits of the Kandakaksha Bay and their almost complete absence at the boundary of the bay with the White Sea Basin and at the boundaries between the Onega Bay and the Dvina Bay and the Basin support the hypothesis on the absence of an exchange with larvae between stocks of the White Sea herring spawning in large bays of the White Sea. The larvae are retained within shallow waters of the Kandalaksha Bay by the system of two-layer water circulation in the areas of spawning of herring in bays and gulfs of the estuarine type. Their drift outside of the Onega Bay and the Dvina Bay may be delimited by frontal divides at their boundaries with the Basin.  相似文献

On the basis of an ichthyoplankton survey made in July 2003 in Kandalaskha Gulf, the Basin, the Gorlo Strait, and the Voronka the species composition and distribution of fish eggs and larvae are investigated. The ichtyoplankton comprises 17 fish species, of which the majority (11) were boreal forms. Other fish were represented by arctic species (2) and arctic-boreal species (4). The traits of distribution of abundantly caught species are considered in detail: larvae of the White Sea oligovertebrate herring Clupea pallasii marisabli, eggs of the dab Limanda limanda, larvae of the northern sand lance Ammodytes marinus, and of the capelin Mallotus villosus villosus. The presence of all larvae of White Sea herring only within Kandalaskha Gulf is considered to be evidence supporting the hypothesis suggested by Dmitriev (1946) on the absence of their drift beyond large gulfs of the White Sea. The natural barrier for mutual exchange with early developmental stages of fish between the White Sea and the Barents Sea in summer may be a developed hydrologic front in the boundary area of the Basin and Gorlo Strait, discovered in the course of the survey. This front causes their death by thermohaline shock in the abrupt gradient zone.  相似文献

On the unstable sedimentary tidal flats of the Wadden Sea, a suitable attachment substrate for sessile organisms is generally lacking. Epibenthic mussel beds (Mytilus edulis L.) provide the only and strongly limited settlement sites available for the barnacle, Semibalanus balanoides (L.). Field investigations showed that barnacles were non-randomly distributed within a mussel bed. They preferentially occurred near the siphonal apertures of living mussels but rarely grew on dead mussels or shell fragments. Field experiments revealed that this was due to selective settlement of barnacle cyprid larvae. Growth of barnacles was significantly higher upon living mussels than on empty mussel shells. Moreover, a higher reproductive output was obtained by individuals on living mussels which produced twice as many nauplii larvae than barnacles attached to empty shells. This study shows that selective settlement of S. balanoides cyprid larvae on living mussels is adaptive with respect to individual fitness. The early developmental stages of capelin Mallotus villosus and lesser sandeel Ammodytes marinus were the major representatives of the fish larvae in the ichthyoplankton of the open waters of the White Sea in June 2007 and 2010 and in July 2010 and 2011. The larvae of these two species were widely distributed in the White Sea and have been registered in the large bays and in the other parts of the sea. The larvae of capelin and lesser sandeel were the most abundant in Onega Bay and in Dvina Bay and in Gorlo Strait of the White Sea; the larvae of lesser sandeel have also been found in the coastal waters of Kandalaksha Bay. The schooling of the larvae of these two species were characterized by a relatively permanent localization that referred to the spawning grounds; the shape and the location of the schoolings usually depend on the presence and configuration of the areas of the pronounced gradients of the hydrophysical parameters in these areas.  相似文献

Barnacles of German coastal waters. An attempt is made to provide a guide for the identification of seven barnacle species occurring in German coastal waters of the western Baltic and the North Sea. Variations in morphological characters observed in sessile adults are described, and figures drawn to differentiate the larvae of the nauplius and cypris stage. The information available on the distribution and ecology of the barnacles considered is reviewed.   相似文献

According to the data of ichthyological surveys conducted in Onega and Kandalaksha bays of the White Sea in June 2015, the abundance and pattern of spatial distribution of larvae of the White Sea herring Clupea pallasii marisalbi are comparable with those of 2012. Aggregations of herring larvae detected at a distance of 12?14 km from the coast in the apex part of Kandalaksha Bay are probably the result of their mass drift caused by fresh floodwater discharge. In coastal waters of the bays adjacent to the littoral part, the abundance of herring larvae above the depths less than 5 m varies considerably due to their drift under effect of alongshore and/or tidal currents. The White Sea herring larvae reach high abundance only in the inlets (Chupa, Knyazhaya, Belaya, and Maikova inlets) with the river runoff; their length increases with the distance from spawning grounds. In different years, the main bulk of herring larvae in Knyazhaya Inlet is concentrated at depths about 12–15 m at 6?8°C, or moved to the upper 5-m quasi-homogeneous layer when the water temperature at the depth was 0?1°C.  相似文献

Species-specific detection and quantification methods for barnacle larvae using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) were developed. Species-specific primers for qPCR were designed for 13 barnacle species in the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene region. Primer specificity was examined by PCR using template DNA extracted from each of the 13 barnacle species, other unidentified barnacle species, and field collected zooplankton samples. The resulting PCR products comprised single bands following agarose gel electrophoresis when the templates corresponded to primers. The amplifications were highly species-specific even for the field plankton samples. The field plankton samples were subjected to qPCR assay. The calculated DNA contents for each barnacle species were closely correlated with the number of larvae measured by microscopic examination. The method could be applied to quantify barnacle larvae in natural plankton samples.  相似文献

The seasonal dynamics of the numbers of larvae of common fouling organisms—the barnacle Balanus improvisus and the bivalves Mytilaster lineatus and Mytilus galloprovincialis in Balaklava Bay (Black Sea)—were investigated during 2000 and 2001 within the framework of an ecological research project. Under the conditions of an increased anthropogenic load, seasonal fluctuations of the numbers and the distribution of larvae depend on rhythms of the breeding cycles of fouling invertebrates and on the hydrodynamic features of the region (water setup). The differences in the optimum temperatures, hatching intensity, and time of occurrence of larvae in the plankton, as well as the irregular distribution of larvae, allow the three major fouling organisms to reduce interspecific competition for food and the substrate.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2004 by Biologiya Morya, Shalaeva, Lisitskaya.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that predator chemical cues can limit prey demographic rates such as recruitment. For instance, barnacle pelagic larvae reduce settlement where predatory dogwhelk cues are detected, thereby limiting benthic recruitment. However, adult barnacles attract conspecific larvae through chemical and visual cues, aiding larvae to find suitable habitat for development. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that the presence of adult barnacles (Semibalanus balanoides) can neutralize dogwhelk (Nucella lapillus) nonconsumptive effects on barnacle recruitment. We did a field experiment in Atlantic Canada during the 2012 and 2013 barnacle recruitment seasons (May–June). We manipulated the presence of dogwhelks (without allowing them to physically contact barnacles) and adult barnacles in cages established in rocky intertidal habitats. At the end of both recruitment seasons, we measured barnacle recruit density on tiles kept inside the cages. Without adult barnacles, the nearby presence of dogwhelks limited barnacle recruitment by 51%. However, the presence of adult barnacles increased barnacle recruitment by 44% and neutralized dogwhelk nonconsumptive effects on barnacle recruitment, as recruit density was unaffected by dogwhelk presence. For species from several invertebrate phyla, benthic adult organisms attract conspecific pelagic larvae. Thus, adult prey might commonly constitute a key factor preventing negative predator nonconsumptive effects on prey recruitment.  相似文献

The results of the analysis of the hydrochemical regime of the A?des caspius dorsalis emergence places at the northern border of its distribution, on the White Sea coast are presented. The larvae of this species are able to grow in the various reservoirs under the different conditions which have been changed during larvae development. The dynamics of hydrochemical characteristics depends on the hydrological regime of these reservoirs. The larvae ability to endure considerable changes of the abiotic factors shows the great adaptive tolerance of the species.  相似文献

The influence of increased and decreased salinity on early larvae of the mussel Mytilus edulisL. and the starfish Asterias rubensfrom the White Sea is studied. Fertilized egg cells, embryos, larvae, and yearlings of the two species were compared. Salinity tolerance changes with the stage of development of mussels and starfish. Morphological changes occurring in eggs and embryos exposed to extremely high and low salinities are reported.  相似文献

To understand trophic responses of polar cod Boreogadus saida (a key species in Arctic food webs) to changes in zooplankton and benthic invertebrate communities (prey), we compared its stomach contents and body condition between three regions with different environments: the northern Bering Sea (NB), southern Chukchi Sea (SC), and central Chukchi Sea (CC). Polar cod were sampled using a bottom trawl, and their potential prey species in the environment were sampled using a plankton net and a surface sediment sampler. Polar cod fed mainly on appendicularians in the NB and SC where copepods were the most abundant in the environment, while they fed on copepods, euphausiids, and gammarids in the CC where barnacle larvae were the most abundant species in plankton samples on average. The stomach fullness index of polar cod was higher in the NB and SC than CC, while their body condition index did not differ between these regions. The lower lipid content of appendicularians compared to other prey species is the most plausible explanation for this inconsistency.  相似文献

In an attempt to isolate bacteria with inhibitory effects against settlement by larvae of sessile invertebrates, 40 marine bacterial isolates were screened for effects against laboratory-reared barnacle larvae (Balanus amphitrite) and ascidian larvae (Ciona intestinalis). Five isolates displayed non-pH-dependent inhibitory effects against the larvae. The initial characterization of a toxic component released from an isolate, designated D2 (CCUG 26757), and its effect on laboratory-reared barnacle and ascidian larvae were studied. D2 is a facultative, anaerobic, gram-negative bacterium isolated from the surface of C. intestinalis from waters off the Swedish west coast at a depth of 10 m. Results suggest that the toxic component is released by D2 during the stationary phase. Aged biofilms were more toxic to the larvae than unaged films. The biologically active compound was in the supernatant of D2 and was heat stable and <500 Da in molecular mass. No evidence of protein or peptide moieties was found. On the basis of two phase and chromatography separations, the component is polar and neutral and contains or binds to carbohydrate moieties. Metaperiodate treatment increased toxicity; undiluted supernatant from a 24-h growth culture of D2 killed barnacle and ascidian larvae within a few hours of exposure, whereas after metaperiodate treatment, the larvae were killed in approximately 30 min.  相似文献

Summary Ten larvae of a balanomorph barnacle were collected in plankton samples from under the sea-ice of McMurdo Sound in the austral spring 1985. This is the first record of planktonic barnacle larvae in the Antarctic Ocean. By deduction they are identified as Bathylasma corolliforme (Hoek) stage II nauplii and cyprids. They are described, the first of larvae of any species of the Bathylasmatidae. Their occurrence in McMurdo Sound is discussed in view of the apparent absence of adults in the Sound.  相似文献

Data on the species composition and distribution of ichthyoplankton in Onega Bay of the White Sea are presented for June–July 2007, 2010–2012, and 2015–2016. In the ichthyoplankton, the specimens of the early developmental stages of 21 fish species were registered; the larvae of the White Sea herring Clupea pallasi marisalbi, capelin Mallotus villosus, and Pacific sand lance Ammodytes hexapterus were the most abundant. It is shown that the northwestern and southeastern zones, distinguished in Onega Bay by hydrophysical parameters, also differ in species composition and in ichthyoplankton abundance.  相似文献

Over small spatial scales, variation in the density of settlers of benthic sessile species is the result of interactions among larval behavior, local hydrodynamic conditions, and the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the benthic habitat. It has been shown repeatedly that adult benthic filter-feeders can consume larvae of their own and other species, but their effects on the distribution and abundance of recruits have rarely been demonstrated under natural conditions in the field, particularly on hard substrata. Here we experimentally quantified the effect of the large intertidal barnacle, Semibalanus cariosus (Pallas), on the density of recruits of three common barnacle species. The experiments were conducted at the peak of the barnacle recruitment season over three successive years, on the west coast of San Juan Island, Washington. A persistent and well documented community pattern in the mid intertidal zone of the study site is a sparse bed of adult S. cariosus with bare rock spaces essentially devoid of small barnacles among the large individuals. Field experiments consisted of small areas from which either all adult S. cariosus were killed leaving the shells attached to the rock, or live adult barnacles were left intact. Our results showed that over small spatial scales of a few to tens of centimeters, the large barnacle S. cariosus can interfere and significantly reduce net settlement and recruitment of conspecific as well as other barnacle species. Between 65 and 100% reduction in settlement could be attributed to larval predation by adults, as implied by barnacle settlement patterns on different treatments and by the presence of nauplius larvae in cirri and stomach contents of S. cariosus. The negative effect on barnacle settlement was consistent between years of relatively low barnacle recruitment, which appears to be the most common situation at the study site, but it disappeared on a year of unusually high recruitment, when settling larvae seem to have swamped the filtration ability of adult S. cariosus. The different barnacle species displayed contrasting settlement patterns on bare rock and on the lateral shells of the large barnacles, which appear to be a result of differences in larval behavior. Comparisons against the relative availability of these substrata in the experimental plots suggested that larvae of different species sample the benthic microhabitat in very different ways.  相似文献

Biofouling is ubiquitous in marine environments, and the barnacle Balanus amphitrite is one of the most recalcitrant and aggressive biofoulers in tropical waters. Several natural antifoulants that were claimed to be non-toxic have been isolated in recent years, although the mechanism by which they inhibit fouling is yet to be investigated. Poly-ether B has shown promise in the non-toxic inhibition of larval barnacle attachment. Hence, in this study, multiplex two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) was applied in conjunction with mass spectrometry to investigate the effects of poly-ether B on barnacle larvae at the molecular level. The cyprid proteome response to poly-ether B treatment was analyzed at the total proteome and phosphoproteome levels, with 65 protein and 19 phosphoprotein spots found to be up- or down-regulated. The proteins were found to be related to energy-metabolism, oxidative stress, and molecular chaperones, thus indicating that poly-ether B may interfere with the redox-regulatory mechanisms governing the settlement of barnacle larvae. The results of this study demonstrate the usefulness of the proteomic technique in revealing the working mechanisms of antifouling compounds.  相似文献

We tested whether the patchiness of barnacle settlement was determined by spatial (local) differences in settling and mortality rates. During the period of 2004–2011, annual photo-registration of a barnacles Semibalanus balanoides population was conducted on six flat rocks in the White Sea intertidal zone (Arctic). The average adult population density was 48 ind dm?2, and the average barnacle age was 3–4 years. According to age structure, during the first year, the number of recruits dropped by three to fourfold; while in the following 2 years, the population density remained nearly the same. The effect of ice friction influence was not recorded, although the rocks were covered with ice in winter. Settling peaks were recorded in 2005, 2007, and 2009. No correlation was observed between the recruit and adult distribution during 2 years of intense settlement. The death rate was uneven on different quadrates along the transects but did not correlate with population density. Because high settling rates and mortality are not linked to specific sites, this suggests that population patchiness is not spatially stable.  相似文献
