Botanical investigation of archaeological sites situated in the northwest of the region bounded by the rivers Maas, Scheldt and Demer (‘MSD region’), west of the city of Breda, has provided a great deal of evidence about the landscape and its use in the period between 2000 b.c. and a.d. 1500. From pollen analysis, it appears that this cover-sand area gradually lost its woodlands through human activity after the beginning of the Bronze Age (ca. 2000 b.c.). Patches of woodland did survive there, however, until the early Middle Ages. In contrast to the cover-sand area in the vicinity of ’s-Hertogenbosch and Oss-Ussen in the northeast of the MSD region, the first large heathlands in the Breda area did not evolve until the early Middle Ages. In late prehistory, land use in this area was not much different from that in the micro-region of ’s-Hertogenbosch and Oss-Ussen. In the Bronze Age, Hordeum vulgare ssp. vulgare (hulled six-row barley) and Triticum dicoccon (emmer wheat) were grown. During the Iron Age, Panicum miliaceum (common millet) and T. spelta (spelt wheat) were introduced, but these crops disappeared during the Roman period. The Roman period is remarkable because of the lack of any Mediterranean culinary herbs or exotic fruits. Only pollen of Juglans regia (walnut), found around the transition from the Roman period to the early Middle Ages, indicates the introduction of an exotic tree into the region. From the early Middle Ages onwards, Secale cereale (rye) was the most important cereal, which was grown as a winter crop. In the course of the Middle Ages, arable weeds of the Sclerantho annui-Arnoseridetum plant community appeared, which is associated with the continuous growing of rye.  相似文献

Until now, very little was known about the agriculture of the Late Iron Age in Hungary. This paper describes the first results of an archaeobotanical examination of a late Iron Age, Celtic settlement in Budapest. It is the first systematically sampled and representatively investigated site of this time period in Hungary. Most of the samples come from different types of pits, which were subjectively sampled. The macrofossils were carbonised and, apart from many seeds and fruit stones, consisted mostly of charcoal. Among the seed remains both cultivated and wild species were present. The spectrum of cultivated plants was marked by a large number of cereals. The dominant cereals were Triticum spelta L. (spelt wheat) and Panicum millaceum L. (broomcorn millet), but also common were Avena sativa L., Avena sp. (oats), Triticum monococcum L. (einkorn), Hordeum vulgare L. (barley); Triticum aestivum/durum/turgidum L./Desf./L., incl. T. compactum Host. (bread wheat, including club wheat). Secale cereale L. (rye) and Triticum dicoccum (Schrank) Schübl. (emmer) were rare and seemed to be less important. The weeds and synanthropic vegetation, including ruderals, were represented by many taxa, and some of them also occurred in large amounts. The main cereals were sown as winter crops, judging from the rarely occurring of plants accompanying the cereals. Wild fruits contributed to the daily diet, too – as seen from the stones of Cornus mas (cornelian cherry), Crataegus sp. (hawthorn) and Prunus spinos (sloe, blackthorn). There were no finds of cultivated fruits. Received October 19, 2001 / Accepted January 30, 2002  相似文献

Summary Mature leaves of Secale cereale cut into narrow strips and incubated for 18 h in a mixture of cellulase (Meicelase) and pectinase (Pectinol R10) produced quantities of protoplasts. Under the same conditions leaves of Triticum aestivum, Hordeum vulgare and Avena sativa also produce protoplasts but in lower yields. The wheat and rye protoplasts in culture appear to regenerate a cell wall but only a very small proportion undergo cell division.  相似文献

The stages of the early Neolithic and the spread of agriculture in northern Italy are difficult to determine and basically still unclear, since this region was influenced by deeply different cultures coming from both the Mediterranean coasts and the Balkans. The complex interrelations due to the contributions from both cultures are reinterpreted here thanks to recent data, modifying a picture which 15 years ago was believed to be definite. According to radiocarbon chronology, the appearance of the earliest farming communities in northern Italy should be dated around 5600–5500 cal b.c. Early farmers cultivated several cereal and pulse taxa, of which the more important were Hordeum vulgare/distichum, Triticum dicoccum, T. monococcum, T. aestivum/durum/turgidum, Lens culinaris and Pisum sp. In addition they gathered many wild plants. The spread of agriculture was a rapid phenomenon and within a few centuries agriculture was established into the Alps. Little is known about the middle and late Neolithic, with the Square-mouthed pottery culture “Bocca Quadrata”, from c. 5100 cal b.c. onwards, since most of the archaeological features discovered up to the present have produced only a few plant remains. We demonstrate the introduction of poppy and a few other innovations like a slightly increased cultivation of free-threshing cereals and flax. Archaeobotanical analyses from Chalcolithic or Copper Age settlements, from c. 3500 cal b.c. onwards, are even scarcer and a comparison with the earlier Neolithic settlements does not yet seem possible.  相似文献

Plant remains were recovered from an Urartian settlement, Yoncatepe, situated in the Van province of eastern Turkey and dating to the Iron Age period (first millennium B.C.E.). Large quantities of hulled barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and of bread/macaroni wheat (free-threshing wheat) Triticum aestivum L./T. durum Desf.), both mixed with small quantities of domesticated emmer wheat (T. dicoccum Schübl.), were found in the storerooms of the Yoncatepe palace, indicating the storage of agricultural surplus. Rye (Secale cereale L.) grains occur very occasionally, while pulses include lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.), chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), and bitter vetch (Vicia ervilia [L.] Willd.). Grape seeds unearthed in a tomb at Yoncatepe provide physical evidence supporting written records of vineyards. Numerous seeds of gold of pleasure (Camelina sativa [L.] Crantz), found in a storage vessel, provide evidence of the cultivation of this plant. It is likely, that the Urartians used the seeds for oil extraction.  相似文献

Disks excised from leaves and intact 7-day-old plants of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Mironovskaya 808), winter rye (Secale cereale L., cv. Estafeta Tatarstana), maize (Zea mays L., hybrid Kollektivnyi 172 MV), and common wild oat (Avena fatua L.) were treated with the xenobiotic (herbicide Granstar, 3–300 μg/l), and the effects of short-term action (up to 3 h) and long-term aftereffect (up to 3 days) on physiological and biochemical indices related to oxidative stress development were studied. Changes (predominantly toward increase) of lipid peroxidation intensity, superoxide anion-radical (O2·−)generation, total antioxidant activity, and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase) under the action of the herbicide were observed. Plant responses depended nonlinearly on the herbicide concentration and duration of treatment. Winter wheat and winter rye turned out to be more tolerant, and maize and common wild oat were less tolerant. It is concluded that oxidative stress is the basis for cereal plant responses to the herbicide action.  相似文献

Plant tissues that yield large numbers of mitotic cells are useful for cytogenetic analyses and prerequisite to flow-cytometric analysis and sorting of plant chromosomes. Synchronization of cell division in samples from which chromosomes are to be isolated is necessary to ensure high yields of chromosomes. A method developed for synchronizing cell division in root tips ofVicia faba (Dolezel et al., 1992; Lucretti et al., 1993) has been modified, and parameters are presented for the effective synchronization of cell division in root tips ofAvena sativa (oat),Hordeum vulgare (barley),Oryza sativa (rice),Secale cereale (rye),Sorghum bicolor (sorghum),Triticum aestivum (wheat), andZea mays (maize). Optimum parameters for metaphase arrest and collection of chromosomes from synchronized samples are also presented. Using these parameters, the yield and quality of chromosome preparations are appropriate for flow-cytometric characterization and sorting.  相似文献

Subunit exchange between lectins from different cereal species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Lectins from Triticum monococcum, Secale cereale (rye), and Hordeum vulgare (barley) can exchange their subunits in vitro and thereby form (intergeneric) heteromeric lectins. An analysis of the isolectin pattern of a Triticale variety revealed that intergeneric heterodimers of wheat and rye lectin subunits are normal constituents of the embryo cells. It appears, therefore, that these different cereal lectins are structurally so closely related that their subunits can not distinguish between identical and nonidentical partners when they associate into dimers.Abbreviations CL cereal lectin - SP Sephadex sulfopropyl Sephadex - WGA wheat germ agglutinin  相似文献

The earliest recorded evidence of flax being cultivated in Sweden is from the end of the Bronze Age/beginning of the Iron Age. Later, from ca. a.d. 1100 and onwards, flax became an economically important plant in the country, and during the 12th to 16th centuries there was a substantial increase in the Swedish export of linen to other parts of Europe. Alongside its extensive cultivation, a set of cultural traditions and rituals was eventually built up around flax. The objective of this article is to draw an outline of the history of flax cultivation in Sweden and to present the relevant prehistoric and historic source material. A point of discussion will be the different roles that fibre flax and oil flax played over a long period of time and the problem of seed corn import for the development of domestic fibre flax in the country. The study is based on the prehistoric archaeobotanical record, mainly charred seeds from the Swedish Iron Age (ca. 500 b.c.a.d. 1050), the archaeological record, documentary evidence and folklore.  相似文献

A direct somatic embryogenesis and secondary embryogenesis protocol was developed for seven cereal species, thus providing a new vista for in vitro plant genetic transformation or propagation. This paper describes a novel process that has been successfully developed for efficient regeneration of a wide range of cereal species and genotypes. This tissue culture and regeneration system does not require formation of callus tissues and takes approximately 2 months to complete, shorter than any of the currently available systems requiring 3-4 months. Rapid induction of direct somatic embryogenesis in barley (Hordeum vulgare), common wheat (Triticum aestivum), durum wheat (T. durum) and derived amphiploids, wild wheat (T. monococcum and T. urartu), rye (Secale cereale) and oats (Avena sativa) was induced from excised immature scutellum on DSEM medium. Newly developed globular embryos were cultured on SEM medium for a second cycle of embryogenesis followed by germination (GEM medium) and regeneration of embryos into normally growing green and fertile plants. In vitro techniques to induce direct somatic embryogenesis, secondary embryogenesis and plant regeneration from these cereals require a specific sequence of defined media and controlled environments. The sequence and the timing of the media used, as well as their hormonal composition and balance are critical aspects of this process. The organic and mineral compositions of these media are not new but are important for supporting and sustaining rapid growth of the tissues.  相似文献

As a part of the ELSA-project (Eifel Laminated Sediment Archive) new pollen and plant macro-remain analyses have been carried out on a series of Holocene lacustrine sediments from three open maar lakes of the Quaternary Westeifel Volcanic Field. In combination with already existing pollen analyses, the archaeological record and written sources, the present study casts new light on settlement activities and henceforth the development of agriculture from the prehistoric to historic times in this region. While there are clues that wood pasturing was practised in the Eifel region from the Michelsberg Culture onwards (c. 4300 cal. b.c.), the Vulkaneifel is a remote area with relatively poor soils and a humid climate and was not constantly settled until the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, when cereal pollen was found regularly in the deposits. Plant macro-remains (chaff), which give us direct evidence for arable agriculture in the surroundings of the maars, were also found in layers belonging to the Early Bronze Age (c. 1900 cal. b.c.). At the same time we can observe the massive spread of Fagus sylvatica (beech) in all pollen diagrams, which was most probably caused by a combination of climatic, anthropogenic and competitive factors. Later impacts of agriculture were an abundance of crop weeds and pollen in the following Middle Bronze Age. Nevertheless human impact remained discontinuous until the Urnfield Culture (1200–800 cal. b.c.). A layer of weeds dating at the end of the Urnfield Culture was found and also flax (Linum usitatissimum) cultivation first becomes apparent. However, the subsequent Iron Age and Roman Period reveal only crop weeds and cereal pollen in slightly higher concentrations, but the abundance of Poaceae pollen at this time is most probably consistent with grazing activities. There follows compelling evidence of the importance of flax cultivation and processing at the maars from the Merovingian Period (5th century a.d.) onwards. A detailed insight into the agriculture of the High Medieval comes from flash flood layers of the 14th century a.d., where remains of Secale cereale (rye) and crop weeds reflect winter-sown cultivation of rye. Cannabis sativa (hemp) was also cultivated and processed during the medieval. Finally we can trace the Prussian reforestation in the 19th century a.d., with an increase in Pinus sylvestris (pine) and Picea abies (fir), by both pollen and plant macro-remains.  相似文献

The immunocytochemically observed intracellular redistribution of phytochrome as a function of its molecular form is described by utilizing color photomicrography. The reversible change from a diffuse to a discretely localized distribution following photoconversion of the red-absorbing Pr form to the far-red-absorbing Pfr form observed with etiolated oat (Avena sativa L., cv. Garry) coleoptile parenchyma cells is not seen with etiolated wheat (Triticum sativum L., cv. unknown), barley (Hordeum vulgare L., cv. Harrison), or rye (Secale cereale L., cv. Balbo). Whether redistribution in these latter cases does not occur or is below the limit of detection is not known. Upon continuous actinic irradiation, phytochrome, which is discretely localized as Pfr, rapidly disappears by both immunocytochemical and spectral assay. However, after about 90 min irradiation, a new association of phytochrome with nuclei is evident which is more pronounced after 4 or 8 h of irradiation. With longer irradiation times there is a total loss of antigenically detectable phytochrome at the resolution employed in these experiments.  相似文献

6-Methoxy-2-benzoxazolinone (MBOA) inhibited germination of rice (Oryza sativa L.), wheat (Triticum aethiopicum Jakubz), rye (Secale cereale L.), onion (Allium cepa L.), wild oat (Avena fatua L.), barnyard grass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.], ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaudin), cress (Lepidium sativum L.), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.), carrot (Daucus carota L.) and amaranth (Amaranthus retroflexus L) and the inhibition increased with increasing MBOA concentrations. MBOA also inhibited the induction of α-amylase in these plant seeds and the inhibition increased with increasing MBOA concentrations. There were variations in sensitivity of these plant species to MBOA, and species of family Poaceae (barnyard grass, wild oat, rice, rye, ryegrass, and wheat) were less sensitive to MBOA than the other plant species.  相似文献

An excavation in the near surroundings of the town of Gouda revealed the remains of a wooden farmhouse. Radiocarbon dates and pottery indicate that the farm was built around A.D. 1120–1135. It belongs to the initial phase of land reclamation in the wetlands of the part of the Netherlands called Holland. Pollen and wood analysis show that the original vegetation consisted of ash and alder woodland on a subsoil of eutrophic peat. People used local wood very economically for the construction of the house. A triangular figure of splitPinus sp. andAbies alba branches near the entrance provides an exotic and probably ritual element. The farmers practised mixed farming based on the raising of cattle, pigs and crops comprisingTriticum dicoccum (emmer wheat),Hordeum sp. (barley).Avena sativa (oats),Linum usitatissimum (flax) andCannabis sativa (hemp). Conspicuously absent isSecale cereale (rye). There are no indications of an orchard.  相似文献

Surgical removal of the coleoptiles from germinating seedlings of Secale cereale L., Avena sativa L., and Zea mays L. leads to a total loss of gravitropic response of the shoot without affecting growth. The principal function of coleoptiles is therefore to guide the gravi-insensitive shoot to the soil surface.Dedicated to Prof. Andreas Sievers on the occasion of his retirement  相似文献

Salt Tolerance in the Triticeae: K/Na Discrimination in Barley   总被引:5,自引:4,他引:1
Concentrations of ions were measured in the youngest fully-expandedleaves of Triticum aestivum, T. durum, Hordeum vulgare, H. spontaneum,Secale cereale, and Aegilops squarrosa accessions grown in hydroponicculture in the presence of salt (NaCl+CaCl2). Triticum aestivum,Secale cereale, and Ae. squarrosa had the low leaf Na and highleaf K concentrations typical of plants which contain the enhancedK/Na discrimination character originally found in Ae. squarrosa.T. durum and the Hordeum species did not have this character. The better growth of H. vulgare than of T. durum with similarsalt concentrations in the youngest fully-expanded leaves maybe a result of better compartmentation of Na, Cl, and K betweendifferent tisssues or between different compartments withincells. The enhanced K/Na discrimination character was expressedin disomic addition lines of H. vulgare chromosomes in Triticumaestivum. The H. vulgare variety Herta and its slender mutantboth had similar leaf cation concentrations, although they differedin growth rate when grown at 60 mol m–3 NaCl. H. vulgareand T. durum seedlings grown in the absence of monovalent cationsaccumulated more 22Na in their shoots than seedlings of otherspecies when incubated in 1.0 mol m–3 NaCl labelled with22Na. Zinc-induced Vacuolation in Root Meristematic Cells of Cereals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the absence of Zn, vacuolar volume fractions of root meristematiccells of Secale cereale L. cv. K2, Triticum aestivum L. cv.Chinese Spring and Oryza sativa L. cv. IR34 were 5.64 x 10–2,2.17 x 10–2 and 1.63 x 10–2 µm3 vacuole µm–3tissue, respectively. A 4-d exposure to a subtoxic concentrationof zine (0.2 µg Zn cm–3) induced a 2.93-fold anda 6.78-fold increase in the total vacuolar volume fraction inOryza and Triticum, respectively, whereas no significant increasewas observed for Secale. It is proposed that this Zn-inducedvacuolation represents a compartmentalization mechanism. Theinitial total vacuolar volume fraction in Secale was greaterthan that for Oryza and Triticum and this may enable compartmentalizationof the metal soon after the onset of treatment so reducing itscytotoxic effects. These findings are similar to those observedin contrasting cultivars of Festuca rubra L. Triticum aestivum L, Secale cereale L, Oryza sativa L, zinc, root meristem, vacuolation  相似文献

This paper describes the results of the archaeobotanical examination of early medieval occupation deposits (8th to 11th centuries A.D.) at Douai, northern France. Carbonized as well as waterlogged seeds and fruits were recovered in great numbers. In addition to the macrofossil analyses, a palynological examination of occupation deposits was carried out. Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) was the most common cereal, followed by rye (Secale cereale). Common oat (Avena sativa) and hulled barley (Hordeum vulgare) must have played a fairly modest role. In addition to cereals, field pea (Pisum sativum) was an important crop plant. Four types of plum (Prunus domestica) fruitstones are distinguished. Sweet cherry (Prunus avium) as well as sour cherry (P. cerasus) were cultivated. Other cultivated fruit trees included peach (Prunus persica) and medlar (Mespilus germanica). Sloe (Prunus spinosa) fruits, including those of the var. macrocarpa, were gathered from the wild. The palynological data suggest that the Douai area had virtually been cleared of forest. A comparison between pollen and seed proportions points to serious discrepancies between the macrofossil and microfossil plant records. Weeds of arable land (Secalietea, Polygono-Chenopodietalia) and vegetations of ruderal habitats (Sisymbrietalia, Artemisietalia vulgaris) are well represented. Molinietalia vegetations in the valley of the Scarpe river were probably exploited as hay meadows; good pasture land was provided by the Arrhenateretalia grasslands.  相似文献
