深圳湾不同生境湿地大型底栖动物次级生产力的比较研究   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

以深圳湾红树林为例,于2010年1—12月每月1次对红树林和3种对照生境(芦苇鱼塘,基围鱼塘和光滩)的大型底栖动物进行了采样调查,并对其次级生产力、P/B值(次级生产力与生物量的比值)、优势种和生物多样性进行了计算与分析。结果表明,不同生境大型底栖动物群落次级生产力和P/B值差异明显,芦苇鱼塘、基围鱼塘、光滩和红树林生境的次级生产力分别为:6.81、147.50、74.70和105.78 g.m-.2a-1;P/B值分别为:1.10、1.53、1.41和3.58 a-1。红树林生境的次级生产力较高,仅次于基围鱼塘,P/B值显著高于其他3种生境,周转速率最快。结合大型底栖动物优势种和生物多样性的季节变化分析表明,红树林生境大型底栖动物生物多样性最丰富,生态系统抵抗力和恢复力最高,生态系统最稳定。由此说明城市化地区红树林生境对大型底栖动物周转速率和物种多样性有明显促进作用,可以增加生态系统营养的保持力和生态系统的稳定性,对于缓解城市化对湿地生态系统造成的威胁具有重要作用。  相似文献

【目的】了解八门湾红树林生态系统中不同生境(潮间带、海洋到红树区的过渡带、海桑红树区)和不同深度土壤的可培养真菌的多样性。【方法】采用稀释涂布平板法分离土壤中的真菌,利用形态学观察和ITS rDNA序列分析技术研究可培养真菌的表观和遗传多样性。【结果】从八门湾红树林生态系统的3个不同生境中分离到257株真菌,分别属于21属28种,其中青霉属(Penicillium)、曲霉属(Aspergillus)和木霉属(Trichoderma)为优势类群。来自不同生境或者同一生境不同采样深度的土壤真菌种类组成不同,并且有些真菌类群只出现在特定的样品中。从空间角度看,红树区土壤样品的真菌多样性高于其他两个生境的土壤样品;从垂直角度看,潮间带和过渡带的表层土壤样品的真菌多样性高于深层土壤样品,而红树区的深层土壤样品真菌多样性高于表层土壤样品。【结论】八门湾红树林生态系统中的可培养真菌资源丰富,种类多样性较高,但不同生境或不同深度的可培养真菌分布存在较大的差异。这些结果揭示了红树林土壤中可培养真菌的生态分布特点,也为红树林真菌资源的开发利用提供了基础的背景资料。  相似文献

Suspended marine benthic microalgae in the water column reflect the close relationship between the benthic and pelagic components of coastal ecosystems. In this study, a 12‐year phytoplankton time‐series was used to investigate the contribution of benthic microalgae to the pelagic system at a site along the French‐Atlantic coast. Furthermore, all taxa identified were allocated into different growth forms in order to study their seasonal patterns. The highest contribution of benthic microalgae was observed during the winter period, reaching up to 60% of the carbon biomass in the water column. The haptobenthic growth form showed the highest contribution in terms of biomass, dominant in the fall‐winter period when the turbidity and the river flow were high. The epipelic growth form did not follow any seasonal pattern. The epiphytic diatom Licmophora was most commonly found during summer. As benthic microalgae were found in the water column throughout the year, the temporal variation detected in the structure of pelagic assemblages in a macrotidal ecosystem was partly derived from the differentiated contribution of several benthic growth forms.  相似文献

The community structure and standing crop biomass of a mangrove forest in Futian Nature Reserve, Shenzhen, the People's Republic of China was studied. This mangrove, located towards the northern latitudinal limit of the mangrove development (22°N), had relatively simple structure and low diversity (the Shannon-Wiener index was 0.78). The three dominant species, namely Aegiceras corniculatum, Kandelia candel and Avicennia marina, possess importance values of 72, 19 and 9%, respectively. The average height of the mangrove community was 4.5 m with no vertical stratification. The values of tree density of A. corniculatum and A. marina were found to be 5290 and 260 ha–1, respectively. The biomass of both A. corniculatum and K. candel was best estimated from regression equations using a combination of height and diameter at breast height as the independent variables. For Avicennia marina, there was no simple correlation between biomass and height or diameter. The regression models suggested by previous workers did not give satisfactory estimation of biomass of A. marina in this mangrove forest. The total biomass of this mangrove forest was 12.1 kg m–2, with 73% of such production contributed by A. corniculatum and 8% by A. marina. Because of its small percentage, the inaccuracy in estimating biomass of A. marina did not affect the overall determination of biomass of the whole community. Average above-ground biomass was 8.7 kg m–2 (72% of the total biomass) and the major components were aerial woody tissues, stems and branches. The abundance and productivity of benthic microalgae in coral reef sediments are poorly known compared with other, more conspicuous (e.g. coral zooxanthellae, macroalgae) primary producers of coral reef habitats. A survey of the distribution, biomass, and productivity of benthic microalgae on a platform reef flat and in a cross-shelf transect in the southern Great Barrier Reef indicated that benthic microalgae are ubiquitous, abundant (up to 995.0 mg chlorophyll (chl) a m–2), and productive (up to 110 mg O2 m–2 h–1) components of the reef ecosystem. Concentrations of benthic microalgae, expressed as chlorophyll a per surface area, were approximately 100-fold greater than the integrated water column concentrations of microalgae throughout the region. Benthic microalgal biomass was greater on the shallow water platform reef than in the deeper waters of the cross-shelf transect. In both areas the benthic microalgal communities had a similar composition, dominated by pennate diatoms, dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria. Benthic microalgal populations were potentially nutrient-limited, based on responses to nitrogen and phosphorus enrichments in short-term (7-day) microcosm experiments. Benthic microalgal productivity, measured by O2 evolution, indicated productive communities responsive to light and nutrient availability. The benthic microalgal concentrations observed (92–995 mg chl a m–2) were high relative to other reports, particularly compared with temperate regions. This abundance of productive plants in both reef and shelf sediments in the southern Great Barrier Reef suggests that benthic microalgae are key components of coral reef ecosystems.Communicated by Environmental Editor, B.C. 选择乐清湾西门岛海域相同高程断面不同造林时间的人工红树林(秋茄林)、光滩和互花米草丛,采用空间代替时间的方法,分析我国分布最北界人工红树林造林过程对大型底栖生物的影响.大型底栖动物生活型分布基本表现为幼林(1、4、8a秋茄林)以底上附着型为主,而在光滩、50a秋茄林和互花米草中底下生活类群相对增加.并且穴居型动物只出现在发育成熟的生态系统内.各项指标显示50a老林群落生态稳定性较好,光滩和互花米草丛次之,但优于发育中的秋茄幼林.与以往研究结果不同,50a老林的大型底栖动物生物种类的丰度及群落的物种多样性最高,并不与红树林的发育状况呈负相关,也不比邻近光滩低.结合50a林下滩涂底泥情况,西门岛50a红树林林下滩涂的底质发育要落后于国内天然红树林土壤.这可能与当地红树林造林规模小以及强潮差海域有关.此外,红树林恢复过程中,大型底栖动物生物多样性与生态稳定性之间的线性关系,其适用的系统面积和演替时间的尺度范围有必要做更加深入的探讨.  相似文献

While diversity of symbiodiniacean dinoflagellates has been a focus of coral reef ecological research, information on the diversity of planktonic dinoflagellates in reef ecosystems remains limited. We used dinoflagellate-targeted PCR to investigate dinoflagellate diversity for a coral reef ecosystem. In the summer of 2007, plankton samples were collected from a lagoon, atoll, and open sea area of Zhubi Reef in the Nansha Islands, South China Sea. Sequencing of dinoflagellate-specific SSU rDNA clone libraries from samples in each of these habitats revealed high diversity and numerous novel dinoflagellate lineages. Gymnodiniales were most abundantly represented in all three water areas. Lagoon assemblages were co-dominated by Syndiniales and Gonyaulacales, the atoll by Gonyaulacales and Peridiniales, and the open sea by Syndiniales and Prorocentrales taxa. Species in the Syndiniales (group II) genus Amoebophrya were represented by eight new sequences and 13 previously described clades and were dominated by species reported to infect Gymnodiniales, Gonyaulacales, Peridiniales, and Prorocentrales taxa. And Amoebophrya were particularly abundant and diverse in the lagoon. Our results suggest that Amoebophrya probably play an important role in regulating dynamics of dinoflagellate assemblages in the Zhubi Reef coral ecosystem. In contrast, the few symbiodiniacean taxa detected occurred only in the open sea, suggesting planktonic aposymbiotic Symbiodiniaceae rarely occur in the reef ecosystem. We demonstrate the usefulness of a dinoflagellate-specific molecular technique for profiling dinoflagellate communities, and uncover diversity and the potential importance of parasitic lineages in a coral reef ecosystem.

Seagrass beds in South-east Asia sometimes consist of a mosaic of different species in monospecific patches. We examined whether the magnitude of within-patch variation in the seagrass Halophila ovalis is affected by the presence or absence of surrounding vegetation consisting of another seagrass species Thalassia hemprichii in an intertidal flat in Thailand waters. We measured biomass and growth rates of H. ovalis at the edges and centers of two different types of patches: (i) H. ovalis patches adjoining T. hemprichii vegetation (HT patches), and (ii) H. ovalis patches adjoining unvegetated sand flats (HS patches). Furthermore, we examined the possible effects of interspecific interactions on the growth of H. ovalis by experimentally removing adjoining T. hemprichii at the edges of HT patches. The biomass of H. ovalis was greater at the patch centre than the patch edge in both types of patches. For the growth rate of H. ovalis, significant interactions were detected between patch types and positions in patches. The difference in growth was significant and more than 4-fold between edges and centers of the HS patches, whereas the growth was not significantly different between edges and centers of the HT patches. The removal of T. hemprichii did not significantly affect the growth rate of H. ovalis at the edge of the HT patches. These findings demonstrate that the magnitude of within-patch variation in H. ovalis growth is affected by the conditions of adjoining habitats. However, any effects of local competition with T. hemprichii on H. ovalis growth were not evident in this short-term manipulative experiment.  相似文献

Nematode-trapping fungi are ubiquitous in terrestrial habitats in dung, soils, litter and woody debris and they also occur in freshwater, but only one species has been found in marine habitats. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate whether nematode-trapping fungi occurred in mangrove habitats. To achieve this we assessed the diversity of nematode-trapping fungi on decaying litter from mangroves, freshwater and terrestrial habitats (22 sites) in Hong Kong. Composite samples (n = 1,320) of decaying litter (wood and leaves) were examined and a total of 31 species of nematode-trapping fungi belonging to four genera, Arthrobotrys, Monacrosporium, and Dactylella were recorded. Twenty-nine species reported in this study are new records for Hong Kong and 16 species are new records from mangrove habitats worldwide. Nematode trapping fungi are therefore present in marine environments. Commonly encountered taxa were Arthrobotrys oligospora and Monacrosporium thaumasium which are abundant in all habitats. A. oligospora, M. thaumasium and Arthrobotrys musiformis were frequent (> 10%). Twenty-six species were rare (0.16–9.32%). Species richness and diversity was higher in terrestrial than in freshwater and mangrove habitats (ANOVA, < 0.001). A higher mean diversity was observed on decaying leaves as compared to decaying wood in all habitats (< 0.001). Based on Shannon diversity index, it was also observed that taxa characterized by adhesive nets were more frequent in all habitats. This can be explained by the fact that these taxa may have a better competitive saprotrophic ability which would allow them to compete favourably in nutrient limited environments. Abiotic factors that could be linked to differences in species diversity between decaying wood and leaves are also discussed.  相似文献

物种多样性对生态系统功能的作用是生物多样性研究的核心领域之一,生物量水平是生态系统功能的重要表现形式,而植物群落的生物量则是生态系统生物量的基础,因此研究植物群落物种多样性与生物量的关系,对于阐明植物多样性对生态系统功能的作用具有重要意义。通过对青海省高寒灌丛生物量、灌丛物种多样性特征以及与生物量的关系调查,得到以下结果:(1)被调查灌木植被群落的40个样地中共出现了207种植物(其中灌木植物18种,草本植物189种),隶属于130属,43科,灌木以蔷薇科、杜鹃花科为主,而草本以菊科、龙胆科、毛茛科和莎草科占优势。(2)群落多样性指数偏低,植物群落结构简单,物种组成稀少。小叶金露梅群落的多样性指数最大,金露梅群落、细枝绣线菊群落和鲜卑花群落次之,百里香杜鹃+头花杜鹃群落最低。(3)不同高寒灌丛类型生物量介于1893.03—7585.41 g/m~2之间,平均值为3775.9 g/m2,其中灌木生物量占灌丛总生物量的73.55%,草本为26.45%。(4)总生物量随草本物种多样性和群落物种多样性的增加而减小;草本生物量随其物种多样性的增加而减小,而灌木物种多样性与其生物量并无显著相关性。  相似文献

2013年8月、2013年10月、2014年1月和2014年4月分别在洛阳河口潮间带选取5种生境(红树林区Q1,Q2,Q3;光滩Q4,林缘光滩Q5)开展调查,以探讨不同生境间甲壳动物群落结构及功能群差异和影响因素。调查共获得甲壳动物18科35种,优势种和重要种有弧边招潮(Uca arcuata)、薄片蜾蠃蜚(Sinocorophium lamellatum)、宁波泥蟹(Ilyoplax ningpoensis)和秀丽长方蟹(Metaplax elegans),以穴居型植食者为主;不同生境间优势种存在明显变化,游泳型甲壳动物主要出现在生境Q1、Q2和Q3。洛阳江红树林生境Q1、Q2、Q3底栖甲壳动物物种多样性和功能群复杂性高于林缘光滩和光滩生境,而生物量和栖息密度则相反。通过对5种不同生境的物种数、生物量、密度、功能群、物种多样性指数进行生境-季节间双因素方差分析发现,不同生境间与季节间甲壳动物物种数、栖息密度、功能群、均匀度指数与多样性指数存在显著差异;生物量在生境间差异不显著,丰富度指数在季节间差异不显著;生境Q1、Q2和Q3差异不显著。而底栖甲壳动物群落相似性和非度量多维度标序(n MDS)分析表明林缘光滩Q5的甲壳动物群落结构与Q1、Q2、Q3的相似度高,与光滩生境相似度较低,这可能是因为红树林、林缘光滩、光滩三者生境的复杂程度、食物丰富程度和食物来源存在差异有关。综合分析表明生境复杂程度与季节是影响洛阳河口潮间带大型底栖甲壳动物分布的主要因素。  相似文献

Mangrove soils are anaerobic environments rich in sulphate and organic matter. Although the sulphur cycle is one of the major actors in this ecosystem, little is known regarding the sulphur bacteria communities in mangrove soils. We investigated the abundance, composition and diversity of sulphur‐oxidizing (SOB) and sulphate‐reducing (SRB) bacteria in sediments from three Brazilian mangrove communities: two contaminated, one with oil (OilMgv) and one with urban waste and sludge (AntMgv), and one pristine (PrsMgv). The community structures were assessed using quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), polymerase chain reaction‐denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR‐DGGE) and clone libraries, using genes for the enzymes adenosine‐5′‐phosphosulphate reductase (aprA) and sulphite reductase (Dsr) (dsrB). The abundance for qPCR showed the ratio dsrB/aprA to be variable among mangroves and higher according to the gradient observed for oil contamination in the OilMgv. The PCR‐DGGE patterns analysed by Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling revealed differences among the structures of the three mangrove communities. The clone libraries showed that Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria were the most abundant groups associated with sulphur cycling in mangrove sediments. We conclude that the microbial SOB and SRB communities in mangrove soils are different in each mangrove forest and that such microbial communities could possibly be used as a proxy for contamination in mangrove forests.  相似文献

Sponge faunas from coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems in the Caribbean have mostly been studied from an ecological perspective, with researchers considering the effects of physical and biological factors on their species distribution. To discern evolutionary patterns, this study analyzed the systematic composition, taxonomic diversity, and ecological properties (reproductive strategies, size, shape, endosymbiosis) of mangrove and reef sponge assemblages from seven distant Caribbean localities. Species composition was compared by use of cluster analysis (Sørensen’s), and taxonomic diversity by use of the biodiversity index average taxonomic distinctness (AvTD). Mangrove and reef-associated sponge faunas were found to be statistically dissimilar, with the AvTD values suggesting stronger taxonomic bias toward specific groups in mangroves, irrespective of geographic distance. Most Demospongiae orders have 30–50% more species in coral reefs than in mangroves. The richest reef genera (Agelas, Aplysina, Callyspongia, Petrosia, and Xestospongia) rarely colonize contiguous mangrove formations. The distribution and diversity of suprageneric taxa suggest that coral reef sponge assemblages might represent an older fauna. This historical interpretation would place mangrove subtidal habitats as the youngest marine ecosystem, rather than a below-optimum ecosystem. Life history traits support a biological split discussed here from the perspective of distinct evolutionary histories and different environmental conditions.  相似文献

The variability in the composition and dynamics of microplankton (ciliate) and mesoplankton in the Temryuk estuarial pelagic ecosystem has been studied at different stages of succession of the pelagic communities. Invertebrates of 54 taxa, including ciliates of 24 taxa, have been identified. Among the ciliates, Myrionecta rubra, Mesodinium pulex, Halteria grandinella, Strombidium conicoides, S. sp. 1, S. sp. 2, Strobilidium sp., Loxmaniella oviformis, and Tintinnopsis minuta were dominant. The share of mesoplankton in the total biomass of zooplankton reached 70% (1.3 g/m3) and was estimated as the maximal value for mesoplankton of the Sea of Azov. Marine and brackish-water rotifers of the genus Synchaeta and Asplanchna priodonta constituted 55% of the biomass. The most abundant meroplanktonic larvae of Amphibalanus improvisus amounted to 30% of the total mesoplankton biomass. In the seasonal dynamics of microplankton development, two peaks of the biomass were revealed: spring (0.45 g/m3) and more expressed summer (0.9 g/m3); in mesoplankton there was one spring peak (3.7 g/m3). Superdense communities of ciliates and detritophages in some periods of the vegetative season are typical for the hypereutrophic ecosystem and can testify to the catastrophic character of its transformation.  相似文献

Allometric growth reflects different allocation patterns and relationships of different components or traits of a plant and is closely related to ecosystem carbon storage. As an introduced species, the growth and carbon storage of Sonneratia apetala are still unclear. To derive allometric relationships of the mangrove S. apetala and to estimate carbon storage in mangrove ecosystems, we harvested 12 individual Sonneratia apetala trees from four different diameter classes in the Futian National Nature Reserve, Guangdong, China. Allometric growth models were fitted. The results showed that diameter at breast height (DBH) and wood density were better variables for predicting plant biomass (including above- and below-ground biomass) than plant height. There were significant power function relationships between biomass and DBH, with a mean allometric exponent of 2.22, and stem biomass accounted for 97% of the variation in S. apetala total biomass. Nearly isometric scaling relationships were developed between stem biomass and other biomass components. To better understand the carbon stocks of the S. apetala ecosystem, we categorized all trees into five age classes and quantified vegetation carbon storage. The S. apetala vegetation carbon storage ranged from 96.48 to 215.35 Mg C ha?1, and the carbon storage significantly increased with stand age. The allometric equations developed in this study are useful to estimate biomass and carbon storage of S. apetala ecosystems.

In Terminos Lagoon, México, more than 80 fish species use the mangrove and seagrass habitats. We studied nekton dynamics in an inlet seagrass system and a more sheltered seagrass/mangrove system located behind a barrier island. Seasonal community biomass ranges from 0.6 to 5.2 g wet wt m-2. For the two habitats together, there are 28 dominant species. Eleven species were common to both areas: Sphoeroides testudineus (Linnaeus, 1758), Archosargus rhomboidalis Linnaeus, 1758, A. probatocephalus (Walbaum, 1792), Arius felis (Linnaeus, 1766), A. melanopus (Gunther, 1864), Eucinostomus gula (Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1830), Bairdiella chrysoura (Lacépède, 1803), Orthopristis chrysoptera (Linnaeus, 1766), Chilomycterus schoepfi (Walbaum, 1792), Opsanus beta (Goode & Bean, 1879) and Lutjanus griseus (Linnaeus, 1758). Ten species used exclusively the inlet seagrass system: Urolophus jamaicensis (Cuvier, 1817), Haemulon aurolineatum (Cuvier, 1829), H. bonariense (Cuvier, 1830), H. plumieri (Lacépède, 1802), Anisotremus virginicus (Linnaeus, 1758), Odontoscion dentex (Cuvier, 1830), Corvula sanctae-luciae (Jordan, 1890), Nicholsina usta (Valenciennes, 1839), Stephanolepis hispidus (Linnaeus, 1766) and Diodon hystrix Linnaeus, 1758. Seven species were dominant only in the seagrass/mangrove system: Anchoa mitchilli (Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1848), Scorpaena plumieri Bloch, 1789, Cynoscion nebulosus (Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1830), Diapterus rhombeus (Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1830), Bairdiella ronchus (Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1830), Cichlasoma urophtalmus (Günther, 1862) and Acanthostracion quadricornis (Linnaeus, 1758). Comparative analysis showed that periodic variation in biomass and diversity of fish assemblages in seagrass and seagrass/mangrove habitats were synchronized with sizes and densities of population, season of the year (dry, wet, ‘nortes’), circulation pattern, and patterns of primary production (phytoplankton, Thalassia testudinum Konig, 1805; and Rhizophora mangle Linnaeus). This analysis allowed the definition of 3 life-cycle patterns with a clear nektonic ‘seasonal programming’ following the timing of primary production in these critical habitats: (1) marine species which spawn in or near the inlet with eggs and larvae transported into and distributed throughout the lagoon by the predominant currents; (2) estuarine-marine species which spawn in different habitats of the lagoon and use the seagrass/mangrove system as a nursery area, and (3) species which complete their life history in the inlet seagrass and/or seagrass/mangrove systems. Expansion of the monospecific mangrove, Kandelia obovata, has converted intertidal mudflats and other habitats into mangrove forests, thus reducing estuarine biodiversity in the Danshuei River estuary, northern Taiwan. Dense mangrove vegetation was removed to create a small patchwork of mudflats and a tidal creek in February 2007. Subsequent changes in sediment properties and biodiversity of the macrobenthos and avian communities were examined. The results showed that the creation of different habitats led to changes in sediment properties and biodiversity. The water content and sorting degree of the sediments differed significantly among the restored mudflat, the tidal creek, and the mangrove control site. Silt/clay, organic carbon content, and chlorophyll a concentrations varied seasonally, but not among sites. The abundance of polychaetes in the creek was greater than that in the mudflat or the mangrove (12.5 vs. 5.3 and 2.2 individuals/m2, respectively), suggesting preferential colonization of infaunal polychaetes in habitats with prolonged submersion. Crabs showed seasonal changes in density, with higher densities in summer than in autumn and winter. The species richness of wintering shorebirds on the created mudflat increased dramatically from 2002 to 2007. The transformation of a vegetated area into an open mudflat appeared to benefit shorebirds by providing roosting habitat. Our study demonstrated that controlling the spread of estuarine mangrove forests could increase biodiversity, and could particularly benefit the migratory shorebird community.  相似文献

无瓣海桑是广西从自治区外引进的外来红树林树种,采用定量化算法精确估算无瓣海桑地上生物量对红树林生态修复以及海洋蓝碳监测提供经验和方法。论文以广西茅尾海自然保护区无瓣海桑红树林为研究对象,以野外实测无瓣海桑红树林地上生物量数据和Sentinel-1/2卫星提取的后向散射数据、波段数据、植被指数数据和纹理指数数据为数据源,通过分析各遥感因子与实测红树林地上生物量之间的重要性关系,采用极端梯度提升(XGBoost)机器学习算法对比了不同的变量组合对模型精度的影响,最后基于优选的变量组合反演了无瓣海桑红树林的地上生物量。结果表明:(1)研究区无瓣海桑红树林实测树高范围为1.55—13.58m,平均值为8.37m,胸径范围为0.7—41cm,平均值为15.62cm;(2)通过XGBoost算法优选的21个特征变量组合模型拟合效果较好,其模型在测试阶段R2=0.7237,RMSE=21.70Mg/hm2。XGBoost算法反演研究区无瓣海桑地上生物量介于19.14—138.46Mg/hm2之间,平均值为51.92Mg/hm...  相似文献

1. The microbial metabolism of organic matter in rivers has received little study compared with that of small streams. Therefore, we investigated the rate and location of bacterial production in a sixth‐order lowland river (Spree, Germany). To estimate the contribution of various habitats (sediments, epiphyton, and the pelagic zone) to total bacterial production, we quantified the contribution of these habitats to areal production by bacteria. 2. Large areas of the river bottom were characterized by loose and shifting sands of relatively homogenous particle size distribution. Aquatic macrophytes grew on 40% of the river bottom. Leaf areas of 2.8 m2 m?2 river bottom were found in a 6.6 km river stretch. 3. The epiphyton supported a bacterial production of 5–58 ng C cm?2 h?1. Bacterial production in the pelagic zone was 0.9–3.9 μg C L?1 h?1, and abundance was 4.0–7.8 × 109 cells L?1. Bacterial production in the uppermost 2 cm of sediments ranged from 1 to 8 μg C cm?3 h?1, and abundance from 0.84 to 6.7 × 109 cells cm?3. Bacteria were larger and more active in sediments than in the pelagic zone. 4. In spite of relatively low macrophyte abundance, areal production by bacteria in the pelagic zone was only slightly higher than in the epiphyton. Bacterial biomass in the uppermost 2 cm of sediments exceeded pelagic biomass by factors of 6–22, and sedimentary bacterial production was 17–35 times higher than in the overlying water column. 5. On a square meter basis, total bacterial production in the Spree was clearly higher than primary productivity. Thus, the lowland river Spree is a heterotrophic system with benthic processes dominating. Therefore, sedimentary and epiphytic bacterial productivity form important components of ecosystem carbon metabolism in rivers and shallow lakes. 6. The sediments are focal sites of microbial degradation of organic carbon in a sand‐bottomed lowland river. The presence of a lowland river section within a river continuum probably greatly changes the geochemical fluxes within the river network. This implies that current concepts of longitudinal biogeochemical relationships within river systems have to be revised.  相似文献
