A limited amount of data on the hermetic storage of Lupinuspolyphyllus Lindley seeds in several different environmentshas been used to provide estimates of seed viability constants. These allow reasonably accurate predictions of seed storagelife under known conditions (orthodox storage), especially inthe short or medium term. The distribution of dry matter and various mineral nutrientsbetween testa and embryo of seeds of Lupinus albus and L. angustifoliusis described It was found that lupin seeds at either end ofa pod contained less dry matter and minerals than seeds in themiddle of the fruit. The transport of dry matter, N, P, K, S,Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu from cotyledons of parent seedsof both species to the seedling axis was measured from germinationto the time of cotyledon death. N, P, K and S were retrievedfrom cotyledons with over 90 per cent efficiency, dry matter,Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, Mn and with 59–90 per cent efficiency, and Ca with 26–31 per cent efficiency. There was littlechange in the efficiency of nutrient retrieval from cotyledonswhen seedlings were grown in different culture media. Both speciesshowed a linear relationship between the loss of each elementand dry matter throughout the experiment, and a similar proportioningbetween root and shoot of the amount of a specific nutrientmobilized from cotyledons of parent seeds. ‘Physiological maturity’, i.e. the time when seedsreach their maximum dry weight during development, occurredwhen maturation drying on the parent plant in the field hadreduced seed moisture content to approximately 60 per cent infaba bean (Vicia faba L.), lentil (Lens culinaris Medic.), chickpea(Cicer arietinum L.), white lupin (Lupinus albus L.), soya bean(Glycine max [L.] Merr.) and pea (Pisum sativum L.) The onsetof desiccation-tolerance, i.e. the ability of seeds to germinatefollowing harvest and rapid artificial drying, coincided withphysiological maturity, except in pea where it occurred a littleearlier at about 70 per cent moisture content. Maximum seedquality as determined by maximum viability, minimum seedlingabnormalities and maximum seedling size occurred in pea, chickpeaand lupin when seeds were harvested for rapid drying at physiologicalmaturity; but for maximum seed quality in the other speciesmaturation drying had to proceed further - to about 45 per centmoisture content in soya bean and to about 30 per cent moisturecontent in lentil and faba bean seed crops. Much of this variationamongst the six species, however, was due to differences inthe variation in maturity within each seed crop. Results forindividual pods showed that peak maturity, i.e. maximum seedquality following harvest and rapid artificial drying, was achievedin all six species once maturation drying had reduced the moisturecontent of the seeds to 45–50 per cent. In pea, faba beanand soya bean there was a substantial decline in viability andan increase in seedling abnormalities when harvest was delayedbeyond the optimal moisture content for harvest.  相似文献

Solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of the following intact plant tissues were recorded by the crosspolarization magic-angle spinning technique: celery (Apium graveolens L.) collenchyma; carob bean (Ceratonia siliqua L.), fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.), and nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus L.) endosperm; and lupin (Lupinus polyphyllus Lindl.) seed cotyledons. All these tissues had thickened cell walls which allowed them to withstand the centrifugal forces of magic angle spinning and which, except in the case of lupin seeds, dominated the NMR spectra. The celery collenchyma cell walls gave spectra typical of dicot primary cell walls. The carob bean and fenugreek seed spectra were dominated by resonances from galactomannans, which showed little sign of crystalline order. Resonances from β(1,4′)-d galactan were visible in the lupin seed spectrum, but there was much interference from protein. The nasturtium seed spectrum was largely derived from a xyloglucan, in which the conformation of the glucan core chain appeared to be intermediate between the solution form and solid forms of cellulose.  相似文献

Components of seed yield of cv. Ultra (Lupinus albus L.) andcv. Unicrop (L. angustifolius L.) were measured when grown atthree densities. The low density (10 plants m–2) Unicropyield (34 g seed per plant) was 1.8 times that of Ultra as ithad more branches, pods and seeds per pod. Ultra seeds (310mg per seed) were heavier than Unicrop seeds (180 mg). The branchingpattern of Ultra was less dependent on plant density, henceat 93 plants m–2 it gave a higher per plant yield (7.4vs 6.4 g) than Unicrop at lower densities (83 plants m–2).Density had most influence on pod formation and only small effectson seeds per pod and seed weight. Yield components on the main-steminflorescence were influenced less by density than componentson branch inflorescences. Later formed, higher order generationsof inflorescences were most affected by increased inter- andintra-plant competition. Pod numbers on the main-stem were similarfor both species. Pods formed at higher flower nodes in Unicrop, but the lower flower nodes were less fertile than those in Ultra.Node position of flowers had no influence on seed set in main-stemUnicrop pods, but pods from higher nodes in Ultra formed fewerseeds. Seed weights in Unicrop were similar among main-stemnodes but in Ultra seed weights tended to increase at highernodes. Lupinus spp, lupins, seed yield, planting density  相似文献

Intraspecific variation in seed size may result from life-history constraints or environmental conditions experienced. This variation in seed size is likely to affect the early stage of invasion as seed size may contribute to the success or failure of population establishment. However, only a few studies have examined seed size variability and its causes and consequences for invaders so far. Using the invasive herb Lupinus polyphyllus, we estimated seed mass variation within and among 39 populations from two different geographic regions in a part of the invaded range. We empirically and experimentally evaluated the effect of seed number and environmental conditions (e.g. geographic region, habitat type, intraspecific competition) on seed mass, emergence and seedling performance. Seed mass varied threefold, being largest among individual plants within populations and smallest among populations. Variation in seed mass was neither related to seed number nor the environmental conditions examined, but led to differences in offspring performance, with emergence and seedling size increasing with seed mass. Larger L. polyphyllus seeds were better establishers than smaller seeds regardless of environmental conditions, indicating that the success of L. polyphyllus invasions is likely to depend positively on seed mass. Our results suggest that some plant species such as the invasive L. polyphyllus may not show an adaptive response in seed mass to resources or environmental conditions, which may partly explain their ability to colonise a range of different habitats.  相似文献

Irrigation of rapid-cycling brassica (Brassica campestris [rapa]L.)plants either ended 16 or 24 days after pollination (DAP) orcontinued throughout the experiment (control). Seeds were harvestedserially from these plants during their development and maturation. The earlier irrigation to the mother plant ended, the earliermass maturity (end of seed-filling phase) occurred, the lowerthe final seed dry weight, and the more rapid the decline inseed moisture content. The onset of ability to germinate normallyoccurred as early as 12 DAP, when seeds were less than half-filled.The onset of ability to tolerate rapid enforced desiccation(to 10% moisture content) occurred at 16 DAP. Desiccation tolerancedeveloped within most seeds in both populations about 5 d soonerin seeds harvested from plants in which irrigation was stoppedat 16 DAP than in control plants, but maximum desiccation toleranceoccurred at about 28 DAP in all treatments. Survival curves(percentage normal germinationvs.period of storage) of seedshermetically stored at 40 °C with 15% moisture content conformedto negative cumulative normal distributions, and provided acommon estimate of the standard deviation of the frequency distributionof seed deaths in time for seed lots harvested at differenttimes from the three environments (  相似文献

In seeds of Trifolium repens, T. pratense, and Lupinus arboreus, the hilum is a hygroscopically activated valve in the impermeableepidermis of the testa. When relative humidity was low the fissurein the hilum opened permitting the seed to dry out; when therelative humidity was high the fissure closed obstructing theabsorption of moisture. During seed-ripening the moisture contentfell readily to approximately 25 per cent., and thereafter moreslowly until the epidermis became impermeable at approximately14 per cent, moisture content. Further drying of the seed tookplace only by diffusion of water vapour through the hilum. ‘Hard’seeds tended to have a moisture content in equilibrium withthe lowest relative humidity to which they had been exposed. They absorbed moisture under conditions of gradually increasingrelative humidity such that the hilar fissure remained open. The duration of the impermeable condition increased with thedegree of desiccation brought about by loss of water throughthe hilum.  相似文献

The nitrogen‐fixing legume Lupinus polyphyllus invaded semi‐natural mountainous grasslands across Europe during the last decades. This invasion resulted in degraded habitats through changes in the structure and function of the mountain meadow vegetation. In our study, we analyzed (1) the effects of increasing cover of L. polyphyllus on the seed bank of mountain meadows, and (2) the potential of the seed bank of these stands for active restoration of mountain meadows in terms of species composition and number. We conducted a seed bank analysis on 84 plots with increasing cover of L. polyphyllus in three mountain‐meadow types of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve, Germany. Seedlings from 119 species germinated from the seed bank samples, including 17 Red List species but only a few seedlings of L. polyphyllus. The species composition of the seed bank matched distinct patterns of the three meadow types, but differed from the species composition of the current aboveground vegetation in a nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination. While the influence of L. polyphyllus on the current vegetation was visible, no effects on the seed bank were apparent. L. polyphyllus had no influence on total seed density, seed density of typical mountain‐meadow species, or species numbers in the seed bank. Only the seeds of the Red List species were significantly related to the cover of L. polyphyllus. We conclude that the seed bank offers potential for active restoration of species‐rich mountain meadows, but species absent from the seed bank have to be added by other measures.  相似文献

Comparative embryo development has been studied histologicallyin Lupinus albus, Lupinus mutabilis, Vicia faba, Pisum sativumand Latkyrus latifolius. The detailed histology of the stagesof embryo formation up to the early differentiation of tissuesof the seed is reported. The rate of embryogenesis has beentimed through 15 stages of development from anthesis and comparativerates of tissue formation established between the species. Themain observation was the slow rate of morphogenesis of embryosand seeds in Lupinus albus in comparison with the very rapidrate observed in Pisum sativum. A long period at the globularembryo stage, when embryo morphogenesis was inactive contributedto the extended development time of embryos and seeds in Lupinusalbus. Slow differentiation of reproductive tissues in L. albusdetermines late maturity in seeds and pods. The abscisic acid (ABA) content of wrinkled (rr) pea seed tissueshas been quantified during development using multiple-ion-monitoringcombined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and a deuteratedinternal standard. The level of ABA in the embryo generallyincreased with increasing cotyledon fresh weight while thatin the testa showed a distinct maximum at the time of maximumendosperm volume and the slowing in the growth of the testa.Pods contained relatively little ABA on a fresh weight basis. The total seed ABA content showed a biphasic distribution, thefirst maximum following the maximum growth rate of the testaand the second that of the embryo. The biphasic distributionof ABA in the pea seed was confirmed using a second pea genotype,near-isogenic to the first except for the r locus, and by theanalysis of individual seeds using a radioimmunoassay for ABA.The first maximum was composed mainly of a testa component andthe second mainly of an embryo component. When plants were grownin different environments, wrinkled seeds were found to containslightly more ABA than round (RR) but this was only significantlate in development. Immature seeds were capable of metabolizing17'-deoxy ABA to ABA, as determined by incorporation of either3H or 2H, and the metabolite was present mainly in the testa. The production of ABA in pea seeds is discussed in relationto the development of the different seed tissues. Comparisons of five pairs of isogenk lines of peas, differingonly in the A gene for seed coat colour showed that white seeds(genotype aa) imbibed more rapidly than coloured seeds (AA),suffered greater imbibition damage revealed by dead tissue onthe cotyledons, and higher solute leakage. Seed-coat pigmentationwas closely associated with slow water uptake, since when expressionof the A gene was suppressed by the recessive pollens gene, the resulting white seeds {palpal AA) imbibed rapidly. The slowwater uptake by coloured seeds was not due to the restrictionof water entry by the seed coat since the differences in imbibitionrate were maintained when a portion of the seed coat was removedand seeds were imbibed with the exposed cotyledon in contactwith moist filter paper. Imbibition of similarly treated seedsby immersion in polyethylene glycol solutions (1–4%) whichincreased the seed/solution wettability, had little effect onthe water uptake of coloured seeds compared to imbibition inwater whereas that of white seeds increased in the first 10mins imbibition. Poor wettability of the inner surface of colouredseed coats did not therefore explain the slow imbibition ofthese seeds. The white seed coats loosened rapidly during imbibitionwhilst the coloured seed coats remained closely associated withthe cotyledons suggesting that the adherence of the seed coatto the cotyledons and therefore the ease of access of waterbetween the testa and cotyledons determines the rate of imbibition. The rapid water uptake by white-coated seeds and the subsequentimbibition damage may explain the high incidence of infectionof these seeds by the soil-bome fungus Pythhan after 2 d insoil. Improved seed quality and emergence may therefore be achievedby breeding for seed coat characteristics leading to reducedrates of imbibition Pisum sativum, isogenic lines, A gene, seed coat colour, imbibition, imbibition damage, wettability, pollens gene, seed quality, grain legumes  相似文献

The dry weight of harvested grain legume seeds is strongly related to their growth rate during the period of storage accumulation in the cotyledons, which begins approximately at the end of embryo cell division. Depodding, defoliation, shading or changes in air CO2 concentration were applied during seed filling (i.e. during the decrease in seed water concentration) to field and glasshouse-grown plants, in order to affect the source-sink ratio. The experiments involved three legume species, namely pea (Pisum sativum L.), soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) and white lupin (Lupinus albus L.). Some treatments affected the number of abortions of less developed seeds from younger pods, but they did not significantly affect the number or the growth rate of filling seeds, demonstrating the priority of carbohydrate partitioning to filling seeds. The maximum growth rate of seeds was achieved regardless of the intra-plant competition level, and the duration of seed growth was shortened if the photosynthetic activity was not sufficient to fulfil the assimilate demand of filling seeds.  相似文献

Little is known about interactions between seeds within theinflorescence of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenneL.) and theireffect on final seed weight. These relations were investigatedin two glasshouse experiments using two genotypes, by reducingthe number of seeds in an inflorescence at anthesis. In thefirst experiment, entire spikelets were removed to study therelations between seeds in different spikelets. The effectson seed dry weight were not proportional to the number of spikeletsremoved. In one genotype, removal of two-thirds of the spikeletsincreased seed dry weight of the remaining seeds by 15%. Inthe other genotype, such treatment did not increase seed dryweight. In the second experiment, investigating seed interactionswithin a spikelet, either two proximal seeds or two centralseeds were maintained in a spikelet by removing the other ovulesin combination with no or 75% shading. Shading by 75% reducedseed dry weight by about 10%. In the unshaded treatment, seeddry weight was not affected by ovule removal. Under shading, the central seeds in a spikelet were about 12% heavier if theygrew alone, in contrast to the proximal seeds. The effects ofa reduction in seed number on seed dry weight were not relatedto the final nitrogen concentration of seeds. These experimentsshow that assimilate partitioning and the relationship betweenseeds in the inflorescence of perennial ryegrass are alreadylargely determined at anthesis; increasing seed yield by manipulationsafter anthesis is not feasible.Copyright 1998 Annals of BotanyCompany. Seed Structure in Cannaceae: Taxonomic and Ecological Implications   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The ovules and seeds of Canna show some striking differencesto those in other zingiberalean families. The pachychalazaldevelopment of the ovule results in a seed of which only a smallpart of the testa is of tegumentary origin. A silicified endotesta, characteristic of the order, is lacking. The mechanical layerof the seed is formed by a continuous exotesta of Malpighiancells. The intact seed coat is impermeable. The seed is ableto absorb water after the raising of a preformed imbibitionlid on the raphe. During imbibition the extotesta loses itshardness, allowing the embryo to emerge. The special structuralfeatures of the seed are discussed in relation to records onthe extreme longevity of Canna seeds. Seeds of Sesbania punicea (Cav.) Benth. are largely impermeable, and the natural, low, percentage which germinate are permeableat the lens. Scarifying seed in acid stimulates germinationand causes various types of damage to the testa, including thelens. Placing seeds in boiling water stimulates germinationby rendering the seeds permeable at the lens. Seeds were mechanicallyscarified at precise sites on the testa to assess influenceof the site and degree of damage on germination. Results indicatethat both the site of initial water entry and the rate of waterentry are important in determining seed and seedling vigour.Damaging the lens is more effective in stimulating germinationand reducing seedling abnormalities than complete excision ofthe lens. This effect can be reversed if seeds from which thelens was excised are allowed to imbibe gradually in inert osmotica. The leguminous lens thus acts as the site of initial water entryand regulates the rate of water uptake, thereby increasing seedand seedling vigour. The bases of differences in germination rates (GRg = inverseof time to germination [tg] of percentage g) among three cold/salt-toleranttomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) accessions (PI 341988,PI 120256, and PI 174263) and one cold/salt-sensitive tomatocultivar (T5) were investigated. The effects of seed priming(6 d imbibition in aerated –1.2 MPa polyethylene glycolsolution at 20 ?C followed by redrying) and of removing theendosperm/testa cap covering the radicle on the temperaturesensitivity of GRg, and the interaction of these treatmentswith genotypes, were also examined. GRg decreased linearly withdecreasing temperature for all genotypes and seed treatments. The minimum or base temperatures for germination (Tb) variedby 1 ?C among the tomato lines, so genotypic differences inGRg were due to differing thermal time requirements for germination. The mean thermal time requirement for germination of T5 seeds was 22% and 19% greater than that of PI 341988 andPI 120256 seeds, respectively, but only 9% greater than thatof PI 174263 seeds. Seed priming did not lower Tb of any genotype, but significantly reduced by 24, 49, 41, and 49% in T5, PI 341988, PI 120256, and PI 174263, respectively, indicating that priming increased the rate at which the seedsprogressed towards germination when T>Tb, but did not lowerthe minimum temperature at which germination could occur. Primingincreased the GRg of T5 seeds to equal or exceed those of control(non-primed) seeds of the cold/salt-tolerant genotypes at anyT>Tb, but the PI lines exhibited an even greater responseto priming. Times to germination within each seed lot were normallydistributed on a logarithmic scale. Priming increased the variancein tg within a seed lot when compared to control seeds. However, the variation in thermal time for germination between the 10thand 90th percentiles of the seed population (T(10–90))was relatively unaffected by priming due to the reduction in in primed seeds. Removing the endosperm cap and testa opposite the radicle tip decreased almost 6-fold and and reduced Tb by 5 ?C in T5 and PI 341988,implicating processes in the endosperm/testa as the limitingfactors in germination at suboptimal temperatures. The influence of the embryonic axis and cytokinins (CKs) onreserve mobilization has been examined in yellow lupin (Lupinusluteus L. cv. JSG 6167) seed during germination and during earlygrowth for up to 9 d in the dark. The study included determinationof starch, soluble sugars, proteins, and amino acid content.Amylolytic and proteolytic enzyme activity was also measuredin untreated cotyledons with intact embryo (attached) or detachedcotyledons (embryo removed), and in detached cotyledons followingtreatment with CKs namely, dihydrozeatin, (diH)Z, and 6-benzylaminopurine,BAP. Generally, the detached cotyledons showed reduced mobilizationand decreased enzymatic activity in comparison to attached cotyledons, indicating the importance of the embryonic axis in this process. However, a rise in protease activity and free amino acid contentwas detected in 9-d-old detached cotyledons suggesting thatthe end products do not necessarily inhibit enzyme activity. While (diH)Z was partially effective in inducing reserve mobilizationand enzymatic activity in detached cotyledons, the effect ofBAP was more pronounced and appeared to replace the embryonicaxis. The embryonic axis of this species has recently been shownto synthesize CKs which are transported to the cotyledons, arehighly stabe and induce cotyledon expansion and chlorophyllsynthesis. The results of the present investigation and previousstudies from this laboratory collectively indicate that theregulation of reserve mobilization in yellow lupin seeds appearsto be mediated, at least in part, by a stimulus, probably aCK, emanating from the embryonic axis. Measured by GC—MS2—SIR3, endogenous ABA4 in embryonicaxes of seeds of Malus pumila L. cv. Golden Delicious decreased8-fold and cotyledon ABA by only 60%, during 10–50 d ofstratification at 5 ?C, after ABA leaching during an initial24 h soaking. During stratification, the percentage germinationof embryos transferred to 17?C showed a significant linear dependenceon loge of ABA levels in the axes at transfer. Between 50 and70 d, ABA levels increased markedly in axes and testa both ofstratified seeds and seeds allowed to re-dry at 17 ?C afterinitial soaking. The ability of fully stratified axes with elevatedendogenous ABA to germinate indicated that stratification haddecreased their ABA sensitivity. Changes in cotyledon ABA couldnot account for the promotory effect of cotyledons on germinationduring the first 30 d of stratification. Loss of testa inhibitionof germination during stratification was not linked with changesin testa ABA. Stratification markedly increased the sequestrationin the axes of exogenous ABA supplied via the cotyledons. Changesboth in axis ABA levels and sensitivity were thus correlatedwith dormancy release, but subject to modifying control by thecotyledons and testa not involving ABA. Rehydration of driedseeds affected axis ABA later during storage via mechanismsunconnected with dormancy. Key words: ABA, seed dormancy, stratification  相似文献

A combination of 14C labelling experiments of white lupin seedlings(Lupinus albus L.) and high pressure liquid chromatography oftissue extracts indicated active biosynthesis of isoflavonoidsduring the first 2–4 d of seed germination. These weresynthesized mostly as glucosides and to a lesser extent as aglycones, with trace amounts of prenylated derivatives. There was a generaldecrease in total isoflavonoids during later stages of germination(c. until d 13), which may be ascribed to their turnover and/orexudation into the rhizosphere. In addition, exudation of isoflavonoidsby lupin seeds germinated under sterile conditions continuesfor 12 d with a preferential release of monoprenylated compounds. The relationship between the specific developmental events duringseed germination and the accumulation of certain groups of isoflavonoidsis discussed in relation to their possible role in the growthprocesses of lupin.
