Garlic (Allium sativum) and its essential oil have long been used for their distinct flavour, therapeutic effects and as a topical and systemic insect repellent. We tested the hypothesis that the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae), responds electrophysiologically and behaviourally to specific components of the steam‐distilled essential oil of garlic. In coupled gas chromatographic‐electroantennographic detection analyses of garlic oil, antennae of female Ae. aegypti responded to 14 compounds. Seven of them [diallyl disulphide, diallyl trisulphide, diallyl tetrasulphide, 2‐(2,3‐dithia‐5‐hexenyl)‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐thiopyran, 3‐(2,3‐dithia‐5‐hexenyl)‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐thiopyran, 6‐methyl‐4,5,8,9‐tetrathiadodeca‐1,11‐diene and 4,5,9,10‐tetrathiatrideca‐1,12‐diene] were isolated or synthesized and tested for their ability to repel host‐seeking female Ae. aegypti. A solution of diallyl trisulphide and diallyl tetrasulphide applied to a human forearm provided protection from female mosquitoes significantly longer than the paraffin oil control. All compounds had mean protection times significantly shorter than an equivalent dose of the ‘gold standard’N,N‐diethyl‐3‐methylbenzamide. Understanding the common moiety in organosulfur compounds that causes repellence could lead to the design of analogues that are more effective than their natural counterparts in repelling mosquitoes.  相似文献

Abstract The angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier), is one of the most serious stored grain pests around the world. In attempts to reduce the losses caused by the moth and to suppress its populations, the fumigant activities, behavioral influence and ovipositional inhibition of garlic (Allium sativum) essential oil and its two major components, diallyl disulfide and diallyl trisulfide, were investigated against the adult grain moth. Their effects on reduction in survival of first instar larvae to adult emergence were also evaluated. Results showed that these three materials (garlic essential oil, diallyl disulfide and diallyl trisulfide) had significant fumigant activity with 50% lethal concentration values at 1.33, 0.99, and 1.02 μL/L air space, respectively; meanwhile, the three materials possessed high behavioral deterrent activities against adults in the Y‐tube olfactometer. When applied to rice grains, these materials reduced adult longevity and inhibited oviposition, with ovipositional inhibition above 70% at a concentration of 1.5 μL/25 g in either no‐choice or two‐choice tests. In short, the study showed that both diallyl disulfide and diallyl trisulfide, like garlic essential oil, acted as fumigants, produced behavioral deterrence and inhibited oviposition against angoumois grain moth. Our work here indicates that diallyl disulfide and diallyl trisulfide may serve as potential alternatives for grain protectants since both of them can be prepared easily from readily available chemicals.  相似文献

An aqueous extract of freeze-dried garlic (Allium sativum), when incorporated into growth media, inhibited many representative bacteria, yeasts, fungi and a virus. All microorganisms tested were susceptible to garlic. Quantitative assessment of the minimum inhibitory concentrations for bacteria and yeasts showed values ranging from 0.8 to 40.0 mg garlic ml-1. Fungal radial colony growth was inhibited by at least 25% at concentrations as low as 2.0 mg garlic ml-1. The 50% endpoint neutralization titre for rotavirus was 2.4 to 2.8 g ml-1. Lactic acid bacteria were the least sensitive microorganisms to the inhibitory effects of garlic. In mixed culture studies of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Escherichia coli, garlic prevented the establishment of E. coli, although the final outcome of competition was not affected.L.P. Rees, S.F. The aqueous extract of Allium sativum bulbs showed an antifungal effect against the fungal skin pathogen, Trichophyton rubrum, isolated from infected patients. For a given concentration (200 mg of bulbs/1 ml), the volume of the aqueous garlic extract loaded on to the discs, and the diameter of the inhibitory zone formed around the disc on the fungal lawn showed positive correlation. Extract-included microbial assay confirmed the antifungal effect of Allium sativum. The extract was not heat stable, it lost its antifungal property above 60 °C. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Abstract:  Attractancy of Allium fistulosum L. and Allium tuberosum Rottl. to adult apterae of the onion aphid, Neotoxoptera formosana (Takahashi), an oligophagous aphid pest of Allium crops, was investigated with a Y-tube olfactometer. The aphids were significantly attracted to both A. fistulosum and A. tuberosum . The headspace components of both plants were extracted with solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main volatile components of A. fistulosum were dipropyl disulphide (relative contents: 67%), 1-propenyl propyl disulphide (23%) and dipropyl trisulphide (6%). In the headspace of A. tuberosum , diallyl disulphide was detected as the main component (58%). Attractancy of dipropyl disulphide, dipropyl trisulphide and diallyl disulphide to the aphids was examined with the Y-tube olfactometer. The aphids were significantly attracted to dipropyl trisulphide and diallyl disulphide at a concentration of 0.01%. Dipropyl disulphide did not significantly attract the aphids at any concentrations tested. It was revealed that attractancy of A. fistulosum and A. tuberosum was caused by dipropyl trisulphide and diallyl disulphide, respectively. The findings suggest that N. formosana uses these sulphur compounds, characteristic components of Allium plants, as olfactory cues to find the host plants.  相似文献

Transgenic leek (Allium porrum) and garlic (Allium sativum) plants have been recovered by the selective culturing of immature leek and garlic embryos via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation using a method similar to that described by Eady et al. (Plant Cell Rep 19:376–381, 2000) for onion transformation. This method involved the use of a binary vector containing the m-gfp-ER reporter gene and nptII selectable marker, and followed the protocol developed previously for the transformation of onions with only minor modifications pertaining to the post-transformation selection procedure which was simplified to have just a single selection regime. Transgenic cultures were selected for their ability to express the m-gfp-ER reporter gene and grown in the presence of geneticin (20 mg/l). The presence of transgenes in the genome of the plants was confirmed using TAIL-PCR and Southern analysis. This is the first report of leek and true seed garlic transformation. It now makes possible the integration of useful agronomic and quality traits into these crops.  相似文献

A natural and biocompatible extract of garlic as a support, decorated with silver nanoparticles, is a proposal to generate an effective antifungal agent against dermatophytes at low concentrations. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with a diameter of 26±7 nm were synthesized and their antimycotic activity was examined against Trichophyton rubrum (T. rubrum), inhibiting 94 % of growth at a concentration of 0.08 mg ml?1. Allium sativum (garlic) extract was also obtained (AsExt), and its MIC was 0.04 mg ml?1. To increase the antifungal capacity of those systems, AsExt was decorated with AgNPs, obtaining AsExt‐AgNPs. Using an AsExt concentration of 0.04 mg ml?1 in independent experiments with concentrations from 0.01 to 0.08 mg ml?1 of AgNPs, it was possible to inhibit T. rubrum at all AgNPs concentrations; it proves a synergistic effect between AgNPs and AsExt. Even if 1 % of the minimum inhibitory concentration of AsExt (0.0004 mg ml?1) is used, it was possible to inhibit T. rubrum at all concentrations of AgNPs, demonstrating the successful antimycotic activity potentiation when combining AsExt and AgNPs.  相似文献

The silverleaf whitefly is one of the most important pests found commonly in Iran and in the world. The development of alternative methods instead of chemical applications is necessary in pest management for human health and environment protection. The objective of this research was to assess the effects of extracts of two medicinal plant species: Calotropis procera and Allium sativum, and a formulation containing azadirachtin on fecundity and fertility of the silverleaf whitefly, grown on greenhouse tomato plants. The effects were compared to that of pymetrozine, a synthetic insecticide. According to the results, there was a significant difference among treatments for all reproductive parameters. Gross fecundity rates for pesticides control, herbal extract control, C. procera extract, A. sativum extract, azadirachtin and pymetrozine were 184.75, 146.72, 80.11, 82.18, 63.06 and 55.96 eggs, respectively. These herbal extracts were effective against this pest and they can be the suitable choices for replacing these chemical insecticides.  相似文献

Protoplasts derived from tissue-cultured shoot primordia of garlic (Allium sativum L.) initiated successive cell divisions within 4 days and formed small individual calli (0.2mm in diameter) after 5 weeks of culture on Gamborg's B5 medium supplemented with 0.1% casein hydrolysate, 1mg/1 1-naphthaleneacetic acid and 1mg/1 6-benzylaminopurine. Plating efficiency was roughly 5% at the density of 1x104 protoplasts/ml of medium. Adventitious buds developed from the calli during subsequent subculture on Gamborg's B5 medium supplemented with 40mg/l adenine and 10% coconut milk. When transferred to the same medium without supplements, these buds grew into shoots and rooted. The regenerated garlic plantlets were successfully transferred to the greenhouse and grew into whole plants.  相似文献

The larvicidal activity of the plant extracts Pseudocalymma alliaceum and Allium sativum were determined against Culex quinquefasciatus. The hexane extract of P. alliaceum and the petroleum ether extract of A. sativum exhibited larvicidal efficacy against Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae. Extracts of P. alliaceum resulted in concentrations that produced 50% mortality LC50 and LC90 values of 2.49 and 15.06 ppm, respectively, after 24 h and 1.16 and 8.45 ppm after 48 h. Extracts of A. sativum resulted in LC50 and LC90 values of 8.38 and 29.15 ppm after 24 h and 7.28 and 44.19 ppm after 48 h of exposure, respectively. The results indicate that the plant extract component(s) present in the hexane extract of P. alliaceum leaves demonstrated greater potential as an efficient larvicide than A. sativum against Cx. quinquefasciatus.  相似文献

Cadmium (Cd) is a well-known nephrotoxicant inducing kidney damage via oxidative stress. Since kidney is the critical target organ of Cd toxicity, this study was designed to evaluate the protective effects of onion (Allium cepa L.) and garlic (Allium sativum L.) aqueous extracts on Cd-induced renal oxidative stress in male Wistar rats. The control group received double distilled water alone and Cd group was challenged with 3CdSO4 · 8H2O (as Cd) (1.5 mg/100 g bw/day per oral) alone. Extract-treated groups were pre-treated with varied doses (0.5 ml and 1.0 ml/100 g bw/day per oral) of onion and/or garlic extract for 1 week after which they were co-treated with Cd (1.5 mg/100 g bw/day per oral) for 3 weeks. The results showed that the levels of renal lipid peroxidation (LPO) and glutathione-S transferase (GST) were significantly (P < 0.001) increased in rats that received Cd alone relative to the control group. More so, the levels of renal glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and Na+/K+-ATPase were significantly (P < 0.001) decreased in rats that received Cd alone. Treatment of Cd-intoxicated rats with varied doses of onion and/or garlic extract significantly (P < 0.05) restored the alterations in these parameters relative to the group that received Cd alone. While treatment with high dose of onion extract exerted a significant dose-dependent restoration of these parameters, treatment with high dose of garlic elicited a pro-oxidant effect, relative to their respective low dose. Our study suggests that onion and garlic extracts may exert their protective effects via reduction in LPO and enhanced antioxidant defense. These extracts may, therefore, be useful nutritional option in alleviating Cd-induced renal damage.  相似文献

Using cell suspension ability as an indicator, we studied the inhibitory effect of garlic (Allium sativum) and diallyl trisulfide on six species of red tide causing algae. This included: the inhibition by 0.08% garlic solution of five algal species — Alexandrium tamarense, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Alexandrium catenella, Alexandrium minutum and Alexandrium satoanum; the effects of garlic concentration on the inhibition of A. tamarense, S. trochoidea and Chaetoceros sp.; the effects of inhibitory time on the rejuvenation of algal cells; and the effects of heating and preservation time on algal inhibition by garlic solution. In addition, whether or not the ingredients of garlic solution had a possible algicidal effect was studied by comparing inhibition of A. tamarense by garlic solution and man-made diallyl trisulfide. The results showed that 1) inhibition by garlic solution was significant on A. tamarense, A. satoanum, A. catenella and S. trochoidea, and the least effective was a concentration of 0.04% on A. tamarense and S. trochoidea. Moreover, the higher the concentration, the stronger was the inhibition, and a high inhibitory rate (IR) could be maintained for at least three days when the garlic concentration was above 0.04%. For A. tamarense, it was also found that the longer the inhibitory time and the higher the concentration, the lower was the rate of resumed cell activity. On the contrary, garlic solution could not inhibit A. minutum or Chaetoceros sp.; 2) The IR to A. tamarense was reduced slightly as the heating time of the garlic solution was lengthened, but the average IR was still above 80%. There was no significant difference between the IR of the supernatant and sediment of the garlic solution. Furthermore, no change of algal inhibition was found when the garlic solution was preserved at 20°C for several days; 3) As with garlic solution, diallyl trisulfide inhibited A. tamarense strongly; the IR was above 93% and was maintained for at least three days, as long as the concentration was 3.2–10.0 mg L−1. Thus, diallyl trisulfide may have been the major ingredient in garlic solution which inhibited the algae but, in addition, more than one ingredient may have been inhibiting the algae. In conclusion, garlic was a good algal inhibitor with many advantages, such as being common, cheap, non toxic and with high efficiency, and diallyl trisulfide, one of the components of garlic, was similarly effective in algal inhibition. It would be useful, therefore, to further study garlic as an environmentally friendly algal inhibitor.  相似文献

Mosquito vectors of major human diseases are currently controlled using chemical and biological products. Extensive insecticide use has led to resistance development and human/environmental health risks, and alternative sustainable control options are needed; in this study, activity of an extract of garlic (Allium sativum; Amaryllidaceae), and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized from the extract, were evaluated against 2nd and 3rd instar larvae of the yellow fever mosquito, Ae. aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae). Synthesis of AgNPs was confirmed using UV–Vis spectroscopy, and characterised using powdered X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Larvae were exposed to five concentrations (50, 100, 150, 200, 250 ppm) of garlic extract or synthesized AgNPs, with distilled water and silver nitrate solution (1 mM) as controls. The mortality of larvae was recorded after 6, 12, 24, 36, and 48 h following addition of the respective extracts.Dose- and time-dependent toxicity were recorded in both treatment groups with no mortality in control groups. Exposure to AgNPs at 250 ppm for 48 h yielded 100% mortality for both larval instars, with corresponding LC50 values of 44.77 (2nd) and 62.82 ppm (3rd). Exposure to garlic extract resulted in similar 48-hour mortality (99 ± 0.77% (2nd) and 98 ± 1.10% (3rd), but consistently higher LC50 values after all exposure times compared to AgNPs (e.g. 48-hour exposure: 108.42 ppm (2nd), 129.11 ppm (3rd), suggesting that AgNPs may potentially be used at lower concentrations for Ae. aegypti control.  相似文献

The work reported in this paper describes the preparation, morphology, stability and sensitivity of Ag-nanoparticles towards sunlight using Allium sativum, garlic extract for the first time. The synthesized silver particles show an intense surface plasmon resonance band in the visible region at 410 nm. The position of the wavelength maxima, blue and red shift, strongly depends on the sunlight and pH. TEM analysis revealed the presence of spherical, different size (from 5.0 to 30 nm) and garlic constituents bio-conjugated, stabilized and/or layered silver nanoparticles. The concentrations of garlic extract, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, Ag+ ions and reaction time play vital roles for nucleus formation and the growth processes. Sulfur-containing biomolecules of extract, especially cysteine, are responsible for the reduction of Ag+ ions into metallic Ag0. The agglomeration number of the silver nanoparticles (N Ag) and the average number of free electrons per particle (n fe) are calculated and discussed.  相似文献

The mycelial phase ofHistoplasma capsulatum was inhibited by both the volatile and water soluble components of garlic,Allium sativum L. Garlic extract at a concentration of 254 parts per billion (ppb) was inhibitory, while 8.1 parts per million (ppm) were lethal to pure cultures ofH. capsulatum. The role of garlic as an eradicent is discussed. The work was conducted while the author was a graduate student at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky.  相似文献

The effectiveness of seven strains of entomopathogenic fungi against Ceratitis capitata adults was evaluated in the laboratory. Adults were susceptible to five of seven aqueous suspensions of conidia. Metarhizium anisopliae and strain CG-260 of Paecilomyces fumosoroseus were the most pathogenic fungi, with 10-day LD50 values of 5.1 and 6.1 × 103 conidia/fly, respectively, when applied topically. Sublethal effects on fecundity and fertility of the fungal-exposed females were also studied. The most effective fungus in reducing fecundity was P. fumosoroseus CECT 2705, with reductions on the order of 65% at 1 × 106 conidia/fly. M. anisopliae and Aspergillus ochraceus also showed significant reductions of fecundity (40–50% for most of the assayed concentrations). Fertility was moderately affected by the fungi. M. anisopliae at 1 × 106 conidia/fly was the most effective fungus, showing egg eclosion reduction of over 50% compared with the control. In addition, culture broth dichloromethane extracts from the entomopathogenic fungi were tested for insecticide activity against C. capitata, including effects on fecundity and fertility. The extract from M. anisopliae was the most toxic, resulting in about 90% mortality at a concentration of 25 mg/g of diet; under these conditions, fecundity and fertility of treated females were reduced by 94 and 53%, respectively, compared with untreated controls.  相似文献

Abstract

Three concentrations (5, 10 and 20% w/v) and spraying schedules (2×, 4× and 6× weekly applications) of garlic, Allium sativum L. bulb extracts were assayed for efficacy against Maruca vitrata Fab. and Clavigralla tomentosicollis Stal. on cowpea under rain fed conditions in two seasons. The results showed that application of aqueous garlic bulb extracts at all the treatment levels significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the populations of the target pests compared with the untreated check. Application of 10 and 20% garlic bulb extracts with 4 or 6 weekly applications gave better control of these pests, protected the pods from damage and increased grain yields on treated cowpea compared with 5% extract at all three application schedules and were comparable to the synthetic insecticide treatment. This material could play a role in the integrated management of M. vitrata and C. tomentosicollis on cowpea fields managed by limited resource farmers in developing countries. The plant material is readily available, cheap, safe, non phytotoxic and technologically simple to use.  相似文献

Eight propolis samples from Croatia were analyzed in detail, to study the headspace, volatiles, anti‐Varroa‐treatment residue, phenolics, and antioxidant properties. The samples exhibited high qualitative/quantitative variability of the chemical profiles, total phenolic content (1,589.3–14,398.3 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/l EtOH extract), and antioxidant activity (11.1–133.5 mmol Fe2+/l extract and 6.2–65.3 mmol TEAC (Trolox® equivalent antioxidant capacity)/l extract). The main phenolics quantified by HPLC‐DAD at 280 and 360 nm were vanillin, p‐coumaric acid, ferulic acid, chrysin, galangin, and caffeic acid phenethyl ester. The major compounds identified by headspace solid‐phase microextraction (HS‐SPME), simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE), and subsequent GC‐FID and GC/MS analyses were α‐eudesmol (up to 19.9%), β‐eudesmol (up to 12.6%), γ‐eudesmol (up to 10.5%), benzyl benzoate (up to 28.5%), and 4‐vinyl‐2‐methoxyphenol (up to 18.1%). Vanillin was determined as minor constituent by SDE/GC‐FID/MS and HPLC‐DAD. The identified acaricide residue thymol was ca. three times more abundant by HS‐SPME/GC‐FID/MS than by SDE/GC‐FID/MS and was not detected by HPLC‐DAD.  相似文献
