Forest succession following fire in a forest mosaic of northwestern Quebec has been studied in order to: (1) describe the successional pathways using communities of different ages and (2) evaluate convergence of successional pathways and possible effect of fire suppression on the establishment of steady-state communities. As a first step, ordination and classification techniques were used in order to remove changes in forest composition which are related to abiotic conditions. Then, ordinations based on tree diameter distributions were used to study shifts in species composition in relation to time since the last fire.Even under similar abiotic conditions, successional pathways are numerous. However, regardless of forest composition after fire, most stands show convergence toward dominance of Thuja occidentalis and Picea mariana on xeric sites and dominance of Abies balsamea and Thuja occidentalis on more mesic sites. Stable communities of >300 yr occur on xeric sites while on mesic sites directional succession still occurs after 224 yr. Nearly all species involved in succession are present in the first 50 yr following fire. Only Abies balsamea and Thuja occidentalis increase significantly in frequency during succession. Following initial establishment, successional processes can generally be explained by species longevity and shade tolerance. Early successional species may be abundant in the canopy for more than 200 yr while the rapid decrease of Picea glauca, a late successional species could be related to spruce budworm outbreaks. Considering the short fire rotation observed (about 150 yr), a steady-state forest is unlikely to occur under natural conditions, though it may be possible if fire is controlled.  相似文献

Attributable risk has become an important concept in clinical epidemiology. In this paper, we suggest to estimate the attributable risk of nosocomial infections using a multistate approach. Recently, a multistate model (called progressive disability model in the literature) has been developed in order to take into consideration both the time‐dependency of the risk factor (e.g., nosocomial infections) and the presence of competing risks (e.g., death and discharge) at each time point. However, this approach does not take into account the possible heterogeneity of the study population. In this paper, we investigate an extension of this model and suggest an adjusted disability multistate model including covariates in each transition. This new multistate model has led us to define the concepts of overall and profiled attributable risk. We use a classical semiparametric approach to estimate the model and the new attributable risk. A simulation study is investigated and we show, in particular, that neglecting the presence of covariates when estimating the model can lead to an important bias. The methodology developed in this paper is applied to data on ventilator‐associated pneumonia in 12 French intensive care units.  相似文献

The three most common tree fern species in a Mexican montane cloud forest fragment (Alsophila firma, Lophosoria quadripinnata and Sphaeropteris horrida) were selected for laboratory and transplant experiments. The objectives were: (1) to determine the percentage of spore germination and gametophytes producing sporophytes, and (2) to compare early establishment of sporophytes at the edge and in the interior of the forest. Percent spore germination varied between 16 and 86 percent, and the number of gametophytes that produced sporophytes was high (>50%). Survival and growth of sporophytes differed between species and habitats. Survival was greater at the edge than in the forest interior for Lophosoria, but it was similar for Alsophila and Sphaeropteris. Number and length of fronds were higher at the forest edge for individuals of Alsophila and Lophosoria, but not for Sphaeropteris. RGR was higher at the forest edge than in the forest interior for sporophytes of the three species. This study suggests that the forest edge is an appropriate habitat for establishment of Alsophila and Lophosoria, but Sphaeropteris is apparently a forest interior species.  相似文献

Analysis of the known and recently discovered differentiation patterns of 58 forest butterfly species (of the total 66) in the tribe Heliconiini, including over 300 races and forms, has led to the drawing of a map of core areas for evolution in the group. The majority of these are not isolated by any obvious modern physiogeographic barriers to dispersal of these butterflies, and probably correspond to forest refugia during the two or three most recent Quaternary dry periods. The map is in good accord with the results of similar studies in other groups of animals (forest vertebrates and invertebrates) and in forest trees, but indicates a larger number of significant operative refugia (38) than other analyses. Bases for the understanding of differentiation patterns in polytypic continental species are developed, in accord with the refuge theory and using intensive and extensive data on local monomorphic populations and secondary contact zones between differentiated forms. The known forms discussed include: Dione juno miraculosa Hering, Eueides libitina Staudinger, Heliconius xanthocles explicata Stichel, H. eleuchia (Hewitson) and H. leucadia Bates together with a supplementary revision of the tribe giving information published since 1972. The following new forms are described: Eueides emsleyi sp. n. and nine new subspecies of Heliconius: H. aoede philipi, H. wallacei araguaia, H. pardalinus orteguaza, H.p. butleri, H. hecale australis, H.h. barcanti, H. clysonymus tabaconas, H. congener aquilionaris, H. sapho candidus. Geographical details of the refugia are given in Appendix I, and in Appendix II the heliconians are assigned to the postulated refugia.  相似文献

Abstract

Degradation of forest sites on the island of Rab goes back several hundred years. The causes include in the first place negative anthropogenic impacts, followed by climatic conditions that are hostile to natural regeneration of climatozonal vegetation. In a part of the island, devastation has led to the disappearance of forests or the preservation of only degraded forms of the basic autochthonous forest vegetation, the forest of holm oak and manna ash (Fraxino orni‐Quercetum ilicis H‐ic/1956/1958). The beginning of the twentieth century saw intensive reforestation activities aimed at halting site degradation processes. The main task of the pines was to create site conditions for the return of climatozonal vegetation. The paper examines the correlation between pine cultures and the return of autochthonous vegetation. Differences were found among forest cultures of maritime (Pinus pinaster Aiton), black (Pinus nigra J.F.Arnold) and Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis L.). Moreover, the results confirm the justifiability of reforesting degraded sites with pines, but they also reveal the absence of more pronounced effects on the sites. Today, there are about 1000 hectares of pine cultures on the island of Rab, yet climatozonal vegetation has been re‐established in only a small part of these forest cultures.  相似文献

The occurrence of multiple introduction events, or sudden emergence from a host jump, of forest pathogens may be an important factor in successful establishment in a novel environment or on a new host; however, few studies have focused on the introduction and emergence of fungal pathogens in forest ecosystems. While Ophiognomonia clavigignenti‐juglandacearum (Oc‐j), the butternut canker fungus, has caused range‐wide mortality of butternut trees in North America since its first observation in 1967, the history of its emergence and spread across the United States and Canada remains unresolved. Using 17 single nucleotide polymorphic loci, we investigated the genetic population structure of 101 isolates of Oc‐j from across North America. Clustering analysis revealed that the Oc‐j population in North America is made up of three differentiated genetic clusters of isolates, and these genetic clusters were found to have a strong clonal structure. These results, in combination with the geographic distribution of the populations, suggest that Oc‐j was introduced or has emerged in North America on more than one occasion, and these clonal lineages have since proliferated across much of the range of butternut. No evidence of genetic recombination was observed in the linkage analysis, and conservation of the distinct genetic clusters in regions where isolates from two or more genetic clusters are present, would indicate a very minimal or non‐existent role of sexual recombination in populations of Oc‐j in North America.  相似文献

The persistence of rainforest patches at Fray Jorge National Park (FJNP) in semiarid Chile (30°40′S), a region receiving approximately 147 mm of annual rainfall, has been a source of concern among forest managers. These forests are likely dependent on water inputs from oceanic fog and their persistence seems uncertain in the face of climate change. Here, we assessed tree radial growth and establishment during the last two centuries and their relation to trends in climate and canopy disturbance. Such evaluation is critical to understanding the dynamics of these semiarid ecosystems in response to climate change. We analyzed forest structure of six forest patches (0.2–22 ha) in FJNP based on sampling within 0.1 ha permanent plots. For the main canopy species, the endemic Aextoxicon punctatum (Aextoxicaceae), we used tree‐ring analysis to assess establishment periods, tree ages, growing trends and their relation to El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), rainfall, and disturbance. The population dynamics of A. punctatum can be described by a continuous regeneration mode. Regeneration of A. punctatum was sensitive to different canopy structures. Growth release patterns suggest the absence of large scale human impact. Radial growth and establishment of A. punctatum were weakly correlated with rainfall and ENSO. If water limits forests patch persistence, patches are likely dependent on the combination of fog and rain water inputs. Forest patches have regenerated continuously for at least 250 years, despite large fluctuations in rainfall driven by ENSO and a regional decline in rainfall during the last century. Because of the positive influence on fog interception, forest structure should be preserved under any future climate scenario. Future research in FJNP should prioritize quantifying the long‐term trends of fog water deposition on forests patches. Fog modeling is crucial for understanding the interplay among physical drivers of water inputs under climate change.  相似文献

Harmonia axyridis (Pallas, 1773) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a ladybird beetle native to temperate and subtropical parts of Asia. Since 1916 populations of this species have been introduced throughout the world, either deliberately, or by accident through international transport. Harmonia axyridis was originally released as a classical biological control agent of aphid and coccid pests in orchards and forests, but since 1994 it is also available as a commercial product for augmentative control in field and greenhouse crops. It is a very voracious and effective natural enemy of aphids, psyllids and coccids in various agricultural and horticultural habitats and forests. During the past 20 years, however, it has successfully invaded non-target habitats in North America (since 1988), Europe (1999) and South America (2001) respectively in a short period of time, attacking a wide range of non-pest species in different insect orders. Becoming part of the agricultural commercial pathway, it is prone to being introduced into large areas across the world by accident. We use the CLIMEX programme (v2) to predict the potential geographical distribution of H. axyridis by means of matching the climate of its region of origin with other regions in the world and taking in account biological characteristics of the species. Establishment and spread seem likely in many regions across the world, including those areas which H. axyridis has already invaded (temperate Europe, North America). Based on the CLIMEX prediction a large part of Mediterranean Europe, South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand seem highly suitable for long-term survival of H. axyridis as well. In addition we evaluate CLIMEX as a strategic tool for estimating establishment potential as part of an environmental risk assessment procedure for biological control agents we discuss biological and ecological aspects necessary to fine-tune its establishment and spread in areas after it has been introduced.  相似文献

The lizard fauna of sand‐mined dunes of the central coast of New South Wales, Australia has been shown to be dominated by Ctenotus robustus and Ctenotus taeniolatus (Scincidae), with relative abundance changing with time since mining. However, there is little published information on how this lizard fauna compares to that of the undisturbed open forest that previously grew on these sites. Here, existing data are added to in order to produce a longer chronosequence of times since sand‐mining (4, 8, 14 and 20 years) than has been examined previously. The new data are compared to those from unmined forests. Ctenotus robustus and C. taeniolatus dominated lizard captures on mined areas, with peak abundances at 8 and 14 years, respectively. Lampropholis guichenoti (Scincidae) was at low abundance until 20 years post‐mining and L. delicata was present only at 20 years post‐mining. Unmined forest burned 4, 8 or 14 years ago had a significantly different lizard community from that of sand‐mined areas. Ctenotus robustus and C. taeniolatus were absent from unmined forest at all post‐fire periods. Lampropholis guichenoti and Lampropholis delicata were numerically dominant in forest, with increasing abundance of L. guichenoti with time since fire. Thus the composition of the lizard community on these coastal dunes is not solely determined by time since disturbance per se. Comparisons of sites on the basis of accumulated leaf litter showed a significant relationship between Lampropholis abundance and litter density. On sand‐mined sites and forested sites with similar leaf litter densities, the abundances of L. guichenoti were similar. As Ctenotus were absent from unmined forest, we could not compare their distribution in unmined and mined areas. However, negative correlations of Ctenotus abundance with canopy cover and understorey vegetation density offer a possible explanation for the absence of these species from forest.  相似文献

A major unknown in the context of current climate change is the extent to which populations of slowly migrating species, such as trees, will track shifting climates. Niche modelling generally predicts substantial northward shifts of suitable habitats. There is therefore an urgent need for field-based forest observations to corroborate these extensive model simulations. We used forest inventory data providing presence/absence information from just over a century (1880–2010) for a Mediterranean species (Quercus ilex) in forests located at the northern edge of its distribution. The main goals of the study were (i) to investigate whether this species has actually spread into new areas during the Anthropocene period and (ii) to provide a direct estimation of tree migration rate. We show that Q. ilex has colonised substantial new areas over the last century. However, the maximum rate of colonisation by this species (22 to 57 m/year) was much slower than predicted by the models and necessary to follow changes in habitat suitability since 1880. Our results suggest that the rates of tree dispersion and establishment may also be too low to track shifts in bioclimatic envelopes in the future. The inclusion of contemporary, rather than historical, migration rates into models should improve our understanding of the response of species to climate change.  相似文献

The impact of forest clearance, and its replacement by Brachiaria pastures, on soil carbon reserves has been studied at many sites in the Brazilian Amazonia, but to date there appear to be no reports of similar studies undertaken in the Atlantic forest region of Brazil. In this study performed in the extreme south of Bahia, the changes in C and N content of the soil were evaluated from the time of establishment of grass-only B. humidicola and mixed B. humidicola/Desmodium ovalifolium pastures through 9 years of grazing in comparison with the C and N contents of the adjacent secondary forest. The decline in the content of soil C derived from the forest (C3) vegetation and the accumulation of that derived from the Brachiaria (C4) were followed by determining the 13C natural abundance of the soil organic matter (SOM). The pastures were established in 1987, 10 years after deforestation, and it was estimated that until 1994 there was a loss in forest-derived C in the top 30 cm of soil of approximately 20% (9.1 Mg C ha–1). After the establishment of the pastures, C derived from Brachiaria accumulated steadily such that at the final sampling (1997) it was estimated 13.9 Mg ha–1 was derived from this source under the grass-only pasture (0–30 cm). Samples taken from all pastures and the forest in 1997 to a depth of 100 cm showed that below 40 cm depth there was no significant contribution of the Brachiaria-derived C and that total C reserves under the grass/legume and the grass-only pastures were slightly higher than under the forest (not significant at P=0.05). The more detailed sampling under the pastures showed that to a depth of 30 cm there was significantly (P<0.05) more C under the mixed pasture than the grass-only pasture. It was estimated that from the time of establishment the apparent rate of C accumulation (0–100 cm depth) under the grass/legume pastures (1.17 Mg ha–1 yr–1) was almost double that under the grass-only pastures (0.66 Mg ha–1 yr–1). The data indicated that newly incorporated SOM derived from the Brachiaria had a considerably higher C:N ratio than that present under the forest.  相似文献

Summary Biological nitrogen fixation is the most important process in which some prokaryotic organisms fix N2 into ammonium. From an agricultural standpoint, biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is critical because industrial production of nitrogen fertilizers seldom meets agricultural demands. To increase the BNF is one of the main challenges for the future. There are different possibilities for extending biological nitrogen fixation to the economically important plants. One of the possibilities is to create new artificial systems between diazotrophic bacteria and different higher plants. This is the main topic of the present review article which discusses the establishment of new associative and/or symbiotic systems, via introduction of diazotrophic bacteria into the roots by different methods; and incorporation of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the entire plant by in vitro methods, through the establishment of intracellular endosymbioses via induced uptake of bacteria by plant protoplasts (endocytobiosis), and establishment of intercellular associations by forced introduction of bacteria into the plant tissues (exocytobiosis). The common characteristic of the methods to create artificial plant-microbe systems for atmospheric nitrogen fixation is the use of in vitro plant systems: cells, tissues and organ cultures. The review pays particular attention to new bacterial inoculation procedures for introduction of the diazotrophic bacteria inside the plant tissues.  相似文献

Background: Studies in temperate mountains suggest that plant–plant interactions modulate tree establishment above the forest line. In tropical mountains worldwide this issue remains largely unexplored.

Aims: To analyse the population structure and local spatial relationships of a dominant tree at a species-rich tropical Andean forest line.

Methods: We determined changes in the population structure of Diplostephium venezuelense along an elevation gradient between continuous forest and open páramo and analysed plant community structure and superficial rock cover in the neighbourhood of saplings and adults at the upper forest line.

Results: Sapling and adult densities were highest in low-altitude páramos adjacent to the forest line and at the borders of small forest islands. Saplings showed local spatial aggregation, were positively associated with small boulders and low shrubs, and negatively associated with mosses and lichens. However, no spatial association was found between scattered adults in the páramo and saplings of other forest trees.

Conclusions: Complex species-specific local spatial interactions, suggesting both facilitative and antagonistic effects, seem to modulate the establishment of the dominant tree D. venezuelense at and above the upper forest line. Nevertheless, the establishment of other tree species above continuous forests does not appear to be facilitated by the canopy cover offered by the isolated D. venezuelense individuals established in open páramo environments.  相似文献

Abstract. We documented the occurrence of a 1934 blowdown in a subalpine forest in northwestern Colorado, USA. Prior to the blowdown, the stand was dominated by old‐growth Picea engelmannii ‐ Abies lasiocarpa forests. Although blowdowns are believed to trigger outbreaks of Dendroctonus rufipennis (spruce beetle), we found no detectable increase in beetle caused mortality. Forest recovery was by both release of the previously suppressed regeneration and by new seedling establishment. Both recovery pathways were dominated by Abies. The blowdown thus caused a shift in species dominance from Picea to Abies; 65 yr after the blowdown, the fallen logs and tip up mounds continue to provide favourable habitat for seedling establishment of both species. The present study shows that the legacy of blowdowns can influence forest dynamics for decades following the disturbance event.  相似文献

Climate change is expected to promote migration of species. In ecotones, areas of ecological tension, disturbances may provide opportunities for some migrating species to establish in otherwise competitive environments. The size of and time since disturbance may determine the establishment ability of these species. We investigated gap dynamics of an old-growth red pine (Pinus resinosa Sol. ex Aiton) forest in the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence forest in northern Ontario, Canada, a transition zone between temperate and boreal forest. We investigated the effects of gaps of different sizes and ages on tree species abundance and basal area. Our results show that tree species from the temperate forest further south, such as red maple (Acer rubrum L.), red oak (Quercus rubra L.), and white pine (Pinus strobus L.), establish more often in large, old gaps; however, tree species that have more northern distributions, such as black spruce (Picea mariana Mill.), paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), and red pine show no difference in establishment ability with gap size or age. These differences in composition could not be attributed to autogenic succession. We conclude that treefall gaps in this forest facilitate the establishment of northward migrating species, potentially providing a pathway for future forest migration in response to recent changes in climate.  相似文献

Zygaena viciae, the New Forest burnet moth, has only one population in Britain, in western Scotland. Here it was discovered in1963 and its population sustained itself, before declining seriously from 1980 to 1990. A survey in 1990 discovered at most 20 adult moths and it was clear that the site had become seriously over-grazed. A fence was erected to exclude sheep, with variable success until 1996, since when it has remained effective. Vegetation speedily changed from 1990 onwards, including re-establishment and spread of the main larval foodplant, Lathyrus pratensis. The moth population remained low until 1997, since which time it has dramatically increased, reaching an estimated 8500–10,200 in 2003. However, with only one site the moth remains threatened and establishment on new sites is now a priority.  相似文献

The regeneration of many tropical trees is threatened by forest fragmentation because it produces major physical, biological and ecological changes that limit seed germination and seedling establishment. We analyzed the regenerative potential of an old growth forest tree species—Ampelocera hottlei (Ulmaceae)—in three contrasting habitats located in the Lacandona rain forest, southeastern Mexico: continuous forest, fragments occupied by black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra) and fragments unoccupied by howlers. We tested if germination of A. hottlei seeds among habitats was affected by understory temperature, light incidence and ingestion by A. pigra. We compared seedling survival and relative growth rate in height (RGRH) for 20 d among habitats and between ingested and control seeds (from mature fruits). Germination was higher in continuous forest than in fragments (occupied or not), with higher germination rates for ingested seeds in fragments. Temperature and light incidence were lower in continuous forest than in fragments. Germination decreased with increasing temperature and light incidence with this relationship being significantly higher for ingested seeds. Seedling survival was higher in continuous forest than in fragments, whereas RGRH did not differ among habitats. In addition, survival and RGRH were higher in seedlings originating from ingested seeds. Overall, our results suggest that the populations of A. hottlei can be limited in fragments where changes in the understory physical environment and the extirpation of A. pigra will likely have deleterious consequences for the regeneration of A. hottlei and possibly for other tree species, ultimately affecting forest composition and structure. Cat's claw creeper, Dolichandra unguis-cati (Bignoniaceae), a perennial woody vine native to tropical America, is a target for biological control in Australia and South Africa. The cat's claw creeper leaf-tying moth Hypocosmia pyrochroma (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) from tropical South America was released as a biological control agent for cat's claw creeper in Australia from 2007 to 2010. A total of 2,277 adults, 837 pupae and 77,250 larvae were released at 40 sites in Queensland and New South Wales. Releases were made mostly in open fields (85%), and at limited sites (15%) in insect-proof cages erected over naturally occurring cat's claw creeper infestations in the field. Sampling was conducted annually in spring and autumn to monitor the establishment and dispersal of Hpyrochroma. Establishment of Hpyrochroma was first noticed in 2012 at three release sites and since then the number of established sites has increased to 80 in 2020. Establishment was evident on both ‘short-pod’ and ‘long-pod’ forms of cat's claw creeper and was more widespread in sites where releases were made within insect-proof field cages (50%) than in sites with open field releases (9%). The moth was active from late spring to late autumn with peak larval activity in late summer. To date, all field establishments have been in areas predicted by a CLIMEX model as climatically suitable but restricted mostly to riparian environment (93% of establishment), where the moth has continued to spread from 1.5 to 23 km from release sites. In contrast, there is the only limited establishment and spread in non-riparian corridors, highlighting the role of microclimate (riparian) as a limiting factor for establishment and spread. Future efforts will focus on redistribution of the agent to river/creek systems where the moth is currently not present.  相似文献

The successful establishment or failure of a new population is often attributed to propagule pressure, the combination of the number of independent introduction events, and the number of individuals released at each event. The design of optimal release strategies for biological control agents benefits from an understanding of the impact of propagule pressure on the species being released. The dispersal rate of individuals from nascent population foci can also affect establishment success. We assessed the minimum threshold for establishment and measured dispersal of Lilioceris cheni (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a biological control agent for Dioscorea bulbifera (Dioscoreales), air potato. Replicated releases of 10, 50, and 100 adults of L. cheni were conducted on the east and west coasts of south Florida. Dispersal was measured from 19 of these sites plus 19 additional release locations in south and central Florida. Lilioceris cheni established populations from all three release sizes with no apparent influence of site location. Releases of 10, 50, and 100 adults resulted in 50%, 67%, and 85% establishment, respectively. Beetles dispersed an average of 1.41?±?0.515?km/yr. Dispersal distance was significantly affected by the time since release but not the number of individuals released. Our results suggest that future releases of 100 individuals could be spaced several kilometres apart on the landscape to facilitate rapid colonisation of D. bulbifera infestations.  相似文献

In the 20th century, there were two decades during which Drosophila melanogaster was the most significant model organism and each decade led to the establishment of new scientific disciplines. The first decade was roughly from 1910 and during this period a small group at Columbia University, headed by Thomas Hunt Morgan, established the rules of transmission genetics with which we are all familiar. In the second decade, roughly from 1970, many of the principles and techniques of the earlier period were used to determine the genetic control of basic aspects of the biology of organisms, notably their development and their behaviour. In this review I will show that it was not only the genius of the research workers (five were awarded Nobel Prizes and it has been argued, with justification, that at least one more should have been awarded) but also the special features of D. melanogaster that led to these advances. While Drosophila is still a significant model organism, the advent of molecular biology permits the investigation of organisms less amenable to genetic analysis, but the principles applied in these investigations were in the main principles laid down during the earlier work on Drosophila.  相似文献
