This study compares the effectiveness and representativeness of electrofishing, snorkelling, seining, baited lift netting, multi‐mesh gillnetting, baited fish traps, fyke netting, angling and longline fishing, considering three typical lentic flood‐plain habitats at different times of day. Electrofishing was by far the most effective method yielding highest species richness, species trait representation and catch per unit of effort (CPUE), followed by seining. For single species like dace Leuciscus leuciscus, European ruffe Gymnocephalus cernua, common bream Abramis brama and silver bream Blicca bjoerkna, seining was more effective than electrofishing. With both methods, some species were more consistently caught during night, dusk or dawn than during daylight. All other methods tested cannot be generally recommended for fish community assessments in shallow backwaters due to their low representativeness of species inventory and generally low CPUE. Based on these results, electrofishing of 30 m transect replicates at different times of day for monitoring the fish community in shallow backwaters, can be recommended, enabling the maximum possible comparability to adjacent river habitats. Seining should be considered as an alternative if accessibility of habitats is restricted or electrofishing is prohibited. The 25 species detected in the backwaters also suggest that these habitats contribute a large proportion of fish diversity and should be included in standard assessments of river ecological status.  相似文献

Synopsis Diel and spatial differences in distribution were determined for the larvae, juveniles, and adults of Galaxias gracilis (Galaxiidae) in a New Zealand dune lake during summer months. Larvae (mostly 10–25 mm TL) and juveniles (25–40 mm TL) inhabited shallow (0–3 m) waters of the limnetic zone and fed predominantly on two limnetic zooplankton species; Bosmina meridionalis and a calanoid copepod. At about 40 mm TL, fish moved from the limnetic to the littoral zone and expanded dietary breadth from two to over seven main prey species, including five species of littoral invertebrates. After reaching a size of about 60 mm TL, most fish moved back offshore to the deeper waters (5–15 m) of the limnetic zone during the day, moving back to the littoral zone at night to feed on invertebrates. The selection of different intra-lacustrine habitats by the various size groups of G. gracilis, and the movements between them, are interpreted as adaptive responses to the interaction between ontogenetic changes in feeding requirements and predation risk.  相似文献

Synopsis Galaxias maculatus and Odontesthes microlepidotus undertook significant habitat shifts in a small Araucanian lake during their early life history. After hatching in the littoral zone, free embryos migrate to the limnetic zone. Later, larvae return to the littoral. A third movement, littoral-limnetic, is suggested through acoustic records of fish in the limnetic zone which correspond with the growth curve of littoral sampled juveniles.  相似文献

Anthropogenic alterations to river flow regimes threaten freshwater biodiversity globally, with potentially disproportionate impacts on species that rely on flow cues to trigger critical life history processes, such as migration for diadromous fishes. This study investigates the influence of river discharge on the abundance of juvenile fish moving into rivers by four temperate catadromous or amphidromous species (common galaxias Galaxias maculatus, spotted galaxias Galaxias truttaceus, climbing galaxias Galaxias brevipinnis and the threatened Australian grayling Prototroctes maraena). Fyke netting or fishway trapping was used to catch juvenile fish moving from estuaries into freshwater in five coastal waterways in south-eastern Australia during the spring migratory period. There was a positive relationship between the probability of high catch rates and mean discharge in September. We also found a positive relationship between discharge and the number of recruits captured 22–30 days later in a flow stressed system. In addition, day-of-year had a strong influence on catch rates, with the peak abundance of juveniles for three species most likely to occur midway through the sampling period (spotted galaxias in October, climbing galaxias in late October and Australian grayling in late October and early November). Our study shows that higher magnitudes of river discharge were associated with increased catches of juvenile catadromous and amphidromous fishes. With a limited supply of environmental water, environmental flows used to enhance immigration of these fishes may be best targeted to maintain small amounts of immigration into freshwater populations in waterways or years when discharges are low and stable. When there are natural, large discharge volumes, relatively large numbers of juvenile fish can be expected to enter coastal waterways and during these times environmental flows may not be required to promote immigration.  相似文献

A novel sampling scheme, using a combination of electrofishing, visual exploration by scuba divers, two types of fyke nets and longlines, was tested in four reservoirs (including their inlets and outlets) to monitor a population of burbot Lota lota. This was supplemented by fry trawling and vertical hydro‐acoustics, to detect L. lota larvae in two deep reservoirs that have had a long‐term stocking programme. The majority of the L. lota detected were juveniles, captured by electrofishing in the littoral zones of the reservoirs and in running waters. Older individuals were rarely captured with longlines or fyke nets in deeper zones or structured habitats within the reservoirs. A combination of multiple sampling methods provided an assessment of the whole population. Population establishment could not be demonstrated as the age structure of the sampled fish corresponded with that of the stocked fish. Low post‐stocking survival, migratory behaviour, interactions with other species and warmer water temperatures are considered the potential drivers for unsuccessful establishment of L. lota populations in these reservoirs.  相似文献

We detected that Galaxias maculatus exhibits a pattern where metabolic activity increases after sunrise and peaks between noon and sunset, but this species feeds in the afternoon, until several hours after sunset. Moreover, we showed that G. maculatus is observed in the littoral zone during the day, disappears completely from this zone after sunset and returns at sunrise. Littoral prey species are common in the diet of G. maculatus, but this study showed that pelagic prey is also present during twilight and night hours in smaller individuals (<50 mm), which is related to habitat use. These behavioural rhythms are especially important for G. maculatus, which runs a high predation risk when consuming prey that is widely available outside the littoral zone. This risk is ameliorated under the protection of low light intensity. Thus, G. maculatus is a key species linking lower trophic levels, such as the plankton community, to higher levels of native and exotic piscivores. These displacements of G. maculatus generate an active flow of energy and matter between habitats, with a potentially profound effect on the entire food network and energy dynamics of the lake.  相似文献

A prototype, boat‐mounted electrofisher capable of operation in estuarine waters (where electrical conductivities often exceed 20 000 µS cm?1) was assessed. Electrofishing was compared to fyke and mesh netting in four riverine estuaries and to seining in a lagoonal estuary (consisting of a series of brackish coastal lakes separated from the sea by a barrier system of sand dunes). Fish assemblage composition, length distributions and the probability of detecting ecological fish guilds (relating to estuary use, position in the water column and body size) were compared among gears. The assemblage composition of electrofishing samples differed from those of fyke nets in all riverine estuaries and from mesh netting in two. The assemblage composition of electrofishing samples differed from those of seining in structured seagrass habitats of the lagoonal estuary. When all species were pooled, the electrofisher sampled a broader range of lengths than either fyke or mesh netting in riverine estuaries or seining in lagoonal estuaries. The bias of electrofishing and netting towards particular species and size classes affected the probability of detecting some ecological guilds, highlighting the potential implications of gear choice on understanding estuarine ecological function. The detection of guilds varied with gear type and environmental conditions, including stratification, water depth and surface electrical conductivity. Assessments with the aim to characterize the structure of fish assemblages will benefit from the use of multiple gears. Electrofishing shows immense promise for discretely sampling highly structured habitats to test hypotheses about their use.  相似文献

During the day, juveniles and typical inshore species in the lower Oder River, Germany, inhabited the littoral (0·05–1·50 m deep) while potamal species inhabited the mid‐channel (40–100 m from the banks). During the night, two behavioural groups were distinguished: 1) potamal species and large individuals of other species, moved from offshore to the littoral, and 2) nocturnal foraging species, became active and increased in inshore and offshore habitats. Inshore, the most significant differences at night was the increasing density of silver bream Blicca bjoerkna increasing both total biomass and total length of fishes caught. Offshore, the increasing density of whitefin gudgeon Gobio albipinnatus at night was most significant. Additional night electrofishing improved the assessment of the abundance, age and size structure of typical potamal fish species. It should be incorporated in large river fish monitoring programmes.  相似文献

The effect of diel period and littoral habitats on the distribution of age-0 fish was tested in a deep-valley reservoir using boat-modified point abundance sampling by electrofishing (PASE). Day and night samplings unveiled differences in abundance of age-0 fish while recognizing most of the commonly present age-0 fish species in the littoral zone. Night survey provided better information about the abundance of age-0 fish since most species appeared in higher numbers at night. Alternatively, night sampling underestimated bleak (Alburnus alburnus) and gudgeon (Gobio gobio), which were predominantly found in the littoral zone in the daytime. The structure of the age-0 fish assemblage was determined primarily by the characteristics of the littoral habitats, i.e. slope steepness and structure, and three different patterns of habitat use were detected among the fish species. To obtain the most comprehensive assessment of a littoral age-0 fish assemblage and to register all species-specific patterns of habitat use, it is necessary that all littoral habitats in the reservoir are sampled during both day and night periods. The boat-modified PASE could be also used as a standard monitoring tool for routine age-0 fish sampling under difficult conditions of steep-sloped shorelines in large inland waterbodies.  相似文献

Predatory alien fishes have been widely introduced into streams in the Cape Floristic Region (CFR), South Africa, but little is known about their effect on native fishes. Results from this 2006 study suggest that the presence of alien predatory largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, may have influenced abundance and habitat selection of the native Galaxias zebratus at one location in a small CFR mountain stream. Numbers of adults, but not of juveniles, were significantly lower where M. salmoides was present, suggesting a size-specific influence on G. zebratus abundance. Because other studies have found the influence of a predator to be affected by prey size and the diel activity of predator and prey, we measured microhabitat use by adult and juvenile G. zebratus by day and by night. Galaxias zebratus selected deeper, faster-flowing microhabitats more strongly where M. salmoides was present than where it was absent. This suggests that G. zebratus adjusts its habitat use in the presence of M. salmoides, although differences in available habitat, or in interactions with other indigenous species, could be partly responsible for the observed differences. In-stream vegetation presence was strongly positively related to depth and strongly negatively related to velocity at positions where G. zebratus was observed, suggesting that the deeper, slower-flowing microhabitats occupied by G. zebratus were structurally more complex than the shallower, faster-flowing ones.  相似文献

The distribution and behaviour of larval and juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) were studied for two years in large, deep Lake Constance. After hatching larvae were transported by water currents to the open water. The majority of larvae remained in the pelagic zone for about one month. In both years, their return to the littoral zone coincided with the decline of pelagic zooplankton abundance. After returning to the littoral zone, juveniles stayed among submerged macrophytes within 5 m depth and lived apart from larger perch which lived at depths of 6–20 m. By late summer, juveniles changed their distribution pattern: during the day they stayed intensively close to piers and ports, but increased their swimming activity at dusk, cruising among shallow and deep waters and feeding on zooplankton, and rested on the bottom at night. This behaviour appears to be related to the decrease of inshore food resources and to the presence of predators in deeper water. 0+ perch left the littoral zone and moved into deep waters when autumnal mixing began in late October. They overwintered near the bottom at depths of more than 30 m. During most of the year, juvenile and adult perch were separated from each other. But as soon as they occupied the same habitat, the occurrence of cannibalism increased.  相似文献

1. Hyalella montezuma is endemic to Montezuma Well, Arizona, and is exposed to minimal diel and seasonal temperature fluctuations in the pelagic zone (21 ± 4 °C). Juvenile H . montezuma feed in the pelagic zone during the day and migrate into the littoral vegetation at night, while adults remain primarily in the littoral vegetation.
2. Oxygen consumption ( V O2) of adult and juvenile H . montezuma was measured at 20, 25 and 30 °C. The V O2 of both adult and juvenile H . montezuma increased with temperature. However, the V O2 of juveniles was significantly greater than that of adults at all temperatures, with greatest divergence at 30 °C where mean juvenile V O2 (6.31 μl mg–1 dry weight (DW) h–1) was almost twice that of adults (3.60 μl mg–1 DW h–1).
3. Survivorship of juveniles was significantly lower (54%) at 30 °C than at 27.5 °C (95%) after 4 h, whereas adults showed at least a 93% survivorship at both temperatures.
4. Our data suggest that temperature may have been the proximate cue that elicited the diel horizontal migration of juvenile H . montezuma in Montezuma Well, with the behaviour maintained and enhanced by intensive invertebrate predation in the pelagic and littoral zones.  相似文献

Mean yellow eel density and biomass in two adjacent shallow (mean depth c 1·5 m) lochs varied significantly between years. Temporal patterns of density, biomass and size were similar in both soft and rocky substrata in the lochs, although eels were consistently smaller in the latter habitat. In both substrata, average length and weight showed a non-significant inverse relationship with density, supporting the hypothesis of density-dependent regulation of the yellow eel population. Fyke net catches were size selective, catching no eels <30 cm long, and providing length-frequency information for silver eels. Fyke net catch per unit effort (CPUE) declined consistently each autumn but specific annual trends were different. When eel density increased, fyke net CPUE declined substantially.  相似文献

Hydroacoustic surveys were performed in an oxbow lake (Lake Laojianghe, China) along the Yangtze River. The study took place during the day and night in October 2012 using the Simrad EY60 split beam echo sounder. A clear day‐night difference in fish densities was observed in selected transect areas. The mean density estimate at night was three times higher than during the day, while at night densities were similar in the two adjacent areas. Significantly positive relationships were found between fish density and average depth for the night and daytime transects, however, the regression slope for the daytime density estimates was much smaller than for the surveys at night. Small fish dominated the acoustic size structure during both day and night, but were more accessible at night. The average biomass estimate from the daytime transects was nearly 60% lower than those from the corresponding night transects. These results indicate that an entire lake estimate of a fish population may be severely biased if fish tend to aggregate temporarily in the bottom or littoral zone or display diurnal behaviour. The conclusion is that acoustic sampling in Lake Laojianghe is best done at night. Diel differences in the lake should be further investigated by carrying out additional day‐night comparison experiments and also by using control catches.  相似文献

Synopsis JuvenileTilapia mossambica Peters (2.5–10.0 cm standard length) in Lake Sibaya, South Africa, move daily from deep offshore waters to shallow (<0.5 m) littoral areas where they feed for several hours and then return to deep water. The timing of these movements varies in response to changing physical and biological features of the littoral environment. During this study (December 1973 – February 1976), lake level rose more than 1 m. At the start of the study, littoral areas visited by juvenileT. mossambica were free of vegetation and debris, but at higher lake levels trees and brush from the eroding shoreline were common in nearshore littoral waters. When the littoral zone was free of debris, juvenileT. mossambica visited nearshore waters only during daylight hours. After a 0.65 m rise in lake level and considerable accumulation of debris, these fish were abundant in the littoral zone only at night. This reversal can be attributed to efforts by juvenileT. mossambica to avoid their principal predator, the catfishClarias gariepinus. At low lake levelC. gariepinus ventured into the littoral only at night but at higher lake levels this predator was found within flooded vegetation during the day. When further increases in lake level flooded marginal grasslands, juvenileT. mossambica abandoned the littoral zone in favor of this newly created eulittoral habitat where potential fish predators did not occur. With the change in habitat, the diet changed from benthic detrital aggregate to periphyton. These observations suggest the importance of behavioral and throphic plasticity in the ability of tilapia to utilize unstable habitats.  相似文献

The diel horizontal migration (DHM) of fish between the inshore and offshore zones of the ?ímov Reservoir (Czech Republic, deep, stratified, meso-eutrophic) was investigated by a combination of horizontal and vertical hydroacoustic surveys at 3-h intervals over 48 h and day/night purse seining in August 2007. An overwhelming majority of fish were aggregated within the epilimnetic layer. Considering only the horizontal surveys, cyclic diel fish movements between inshore and offshore habitats were apparent, while the total fish biomass remained constant between day and night. A higher fish biomass was detected in the offshore zone during daytime by both hydroacoustics and purse seining. In contrast, a higher fish biomass was recorded at night in the inshore zone. Bream Abramis brama, roach Rutilus rutilus, and perch Perca fluviatilis dominated the daytime offshore fish assemblage whereas bleak Alburnus alburnus prevailed at night. Bream and roach decreased in abundance at night while perch completely disappeared from the offshore habitat. The diel differences in size distributions and direct catches suggested the population-wide horizontal offshore migration of bleak and inshore migration of all perch during dusk. On the other hand, partial inshore migration of bream and roach adults was observed during dusk (52 and 80%, respectively). The different proportions of offshore residents among species and size classes suggested that differences in size, and, therefore, predation vulnerability, contributed to the observed migration patterns.  相似文献

Despite potentially reducing predation mortality, behavioural responses of native species to introduced predators may still have sub-lethal impacts. In video-recorded laboratory trials, we examined the effects of introduced brown trout, Salmo trutta, on the short-term behaviour of a threatened, lake-dwelling galaxiid fish and confirmed a suspected diel pattern in habitat use by this species. We found that Galaxias auratus followed a distinct diel pattern in the use of complex habitats and open water, which was significantly altered by the presence of brown trout. In trials without the introduced predator, G. auratus used complex habitats (rocks or macrophytes) during the day, and open water during the night. In trials with brown trout present, G. auratus spent significantly less time in open water and rarely ventured out of the macrophytes. However, when given the option of using only rocky substrate or open water, which is the more common situation in the lakes to which this galaxiid is endemic, the fish reduced the amount of time they spent in the open water during the night, but still spent more time in open water than when macrophytes were available. Spending the daylight hours amongst the cover of rocks or macrophytes is most likely an adaptation to reduce the risk of predation by visual predators, and the pattern of reduced use of open water habitats in the presence of brown trout is an acute response to the close proximity of the introduced predator. The difference in the nocturnal use of macrophytes and rocks when trout are present may be related to differences in feeding opportunities or success within these habitats.  相似文献

The effect diel variation in availability and vulnerability has on the fish capture process of a groundfish survey trawl was examined from data collected during an experiment measuring fish escapement underneath the footgear. The survey trawl was significantly more efficient at night in capturing American plaice, Hippoglossoides platessoides, and yellowtail flounder, Limanda ferruginea, but no difference was found in catches of Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua. This increase in capture efficiency at night is related to an increase in availability and vulnerability associated with diel variation in light intensity. No evidence of diel vertical migration was found and changes in availability were linked to visual dependent gear avoidance by the fish. Regardless of light conditions, the survey trawl had a very low capture efficiency for juveniles of the three species studied. Escapement of this size group was extremely high during both day and night periods due to a fast towing speed, use of large bobbin gear, and possible mesh selection.  相似文献

The spatial (distance from the shore) and seasonal (summer-winter) distributions of the ichtyofauna in the littoral zone of Lake Geneva were studied between October 1991 and December 1992. Gill nets were set simultaneously at three different sites of a chosen littoral zone: shore, middle and far (50, 300 and 550 m from the shore, respectively).The results show that in summer more species and individuals are present in the littoral zone than in winter. Throughout the year, species richness is greater at the shore site than at the middle or far site. In summer, total abundance is greater at the far site, whereas there are more fish at the shore site during winter. Perch (juveniles and adults), roach and gudgeon (adults only), have maximum abundance during the summer, while lake trout, grayling and whitefish (adults) have maximum abundance during the winter. For five species (adults only) the site comparison shows spatial segregation of the habitats: greater numbers of perch are present at the far site while roach, tench, lake trout and grayling prefer the shore site.  相似文献
