The temperature dependence of respiration rates and their acclimation to growth temperature vary among species/ecotypes, but the details remain unclear. Here, we compared the temperature dependence of shoot O2 consumption rates among Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes to clarify how the temperature dependence and their acclimation to temperature differ among ecotypes, and how these differences relate to shoot growth. We examined growth analysis, temperature dependence of O2 consumption rates, and protein amounts of the respiratory chain components in shoots of twelve ecotypes of A. thaliana grown at three different temperatures. The temperature dependence of the O2 consumption rates were fitted to the modified Arrhenius model. The dynamic response of activation energy to measurement temperature was different among growth temperatures, suggesting that the plasticity of respiratory flux to temperatures differs among growth temperatures. The similar values of activation energy at growth temperature among ecotypes suggest that a similar process may determine the O2 consumption rates at the growth temperature in any ecotype. These results suggest that the growth temperature affects not only the absolute rate of O2 consumption but also the plasticity of respiratory flux in response to temperature, supporting the acclimation of shoot growth to various temperatures.  相似文献

Five ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana, from widely dispersed origins, were grown under combinations of ambient and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations and ambient and elevated temperatures within solardomes. Total above-ground plant biomass was measured when the majority of plants across all ecotypes and treatments had formed seed pods. There were substantial differences in biomass between the ecotypes across all treatments. Temperature had no effect on biomass whilst CO2 had a significant effect both alone and in interaction with ecotype. The CO2 x ecotype interaction was mostly due to the enhancement of a single ecotype from the Cape Verde Islands.  相似文献

The EICA hypothesis predicts that shifts in allocation of invasive plants give rise to higher growth rates and lower herbivore defense levels in their introduced range than conspecifics in their native range. These changes in traits of invasive plants may also affect ecosystem processes. We conducted an outdoor pot experiment with Chinese tallow tree (Sapium sebiferum, Euphorbiaceae) seedlings from its native (Jiangsu, China, native ecotype) and introduced ranges (Texas, USA, invasive ecotype) to compare their relative performances in its native range and to examine ecotype effects on soil processes with and without fertilization. Consistent with predictions, plant (shoot and root) mass was significantly greater and leaf defoliation tended to be higher, while the root:shoot ratio was lower for the invasive ecotype relative to the native ecotype. Seasonal amounts of soil–plant system CO2 and N2O emissions were higher for the invasive ecotype than for the native ecotype. Soil respiration rates and N2O emission increases from fertilization were also greater for the invasive ecotype than for the native ecotype, while shoot-specific respiration rates (g CO2–C g−1 C day−1) did not differ between ecotypes. Further, soil inorganic N (ammonium and nitrate) was higher, but soil total N was lower for soils with the invasive ecotype than soils with the native ecotype. Compared with native ecotypes, therefore, invasive ecotypes may have developed a competition advantage in accelerating soil processes and promoting more nitrogen uptake through soil–plant direct interaction. The results of this study suggest that soil and ecosystem processes accelerated by variation in traits of invasive plants may have implications for their invasiveness.  相似文献

Respiration measurements were made on the entire aboveground parts of young, field-grown hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) trees at monthly intervals over a 5-year period, to examine the effect of temperature on maintenance and growth respiration coefficients. The respiration rate of the trees was grouped on a monthly basis and then partitioned into maintenance and growth components. The maintenance respiration coefficient increased exponentially with air temperature. The maintenance respiration coefficient at a temperature of 0°C and itsQ 10 value were 0.205 mmol CO2 g−1 d.w. month−1 and 1.81, respectively. The growth respiration coefficient, which was virtually independent of temperature, had a mean value of 38.06±1.95 (SE) mmol CO2g−1 d.w. The growth rate increased exponentially with increasing temperature up to a peak at around 18°C, and thereafter declined, thereby resulting in the growth respiration rate being increasingly less sensitive to increasing air temperature. The reported decreases in theQ 10 value of total respiration with increasing air temperature is due to the way in which the growth component of respiration responds to temperature.  相似文献

Nodulation tests onin-vitro propagated clones ofAlnus glutinosa ecotypes (forest ecotype, pioneer ecotype) withFrankia strains originating from both ecotypes indicated differences in host-plant compatibility. Inoculated plants of the pioneer ecotype clone were not infected by strains, that were unable to fix nitrogen in pure culture. Nodulation could only be induced on the clone of the forest ecotype, but no nitrogen-fixing activity could be detected. Ultra-structural observations of the nodules by SEM and TEM indicated that ineffectivity of these strains was correlated with the lack of vesicles in the infected cells. Cells were only filled with hyphae: neither sporangia nor vesicles could be detected. In contrast, effective nodules could be obtained on both alder clones after inoculation with an effective strain, showing normal development of vesicle clusters in infected cells. In pure culture the ineffective strains produced no vesicles; sporangia were found only during early stage of growth. The results demonstrate the existence ofFrankia strains which were either non-infective or ineffective on different clones ofAlnus glutinosa.  相似文献

Young sporophytes of short-stipe ecotype ofEcklonia cavafrom a warmer locality (Tei, Kochi Pref., southern Japan) and those of long-stipe ecotype from a cooler locality (Nabeta, Shizuoka Pref., central Japan) were transplanted in 1995 to artificial reefs immersed at the habitat of long-stipe ecotype in Nabeta Bay, Shizuoka Pref., central Japan. The characteristics of photosynthesis and respiration of bladelets of the transplanted sporophytes of the two ecotypes were compared in winter and summer 1997; the results were assessed per unit area, per unit chlorophyllacontent and per unit dry weight. In photosynthesis-light curves at 10–29 °C, light saturation occurred at 200–400 mol photon m–2s–1in sporophytes from both Tei and Nabeta. The maximum photosynthetic rate (P max) at 10–29 °C and the light-saturation index (I k) at 25–29 °C in sporophytes from both localities were generally higher in winter than in summer.P maxat 25–29 °C (per unit area and chlorophylla) were higher in sporophytes from Tei than those from Nabeta in both seasons. The optimum temperature for photosynthesis was 25 °C in winter and 27 °C in summer at high light intensities of 100–400 mol photon m–2s–1. However, at lower light intensities of 12.5–50 mol photon m–2s–1, it was 20 °C in winter and 25–27 °C in summer for sporophytes from both locations. Dark respiration increased with temperature rise in the range of 10–29 °C in sporophytes from both locations in summer and winter. The sporophytes transplanted from Tei (warmer area) showed higher photosynthetic activities than those from Nabeta (cooler area) at warmer temperatures even under the same environmental conditions. This indicates that these physiological ecotypes have arisen from genetic differentiation.  相似文献

Growth and dormancy as affected by photoperiod and temperature have been studied in Norway spruce ecotypes of different latitudinal and altitudinal origin. First-year seedlings were used. In all ecotypes apical growth cessation and terminal bud formation occurred within 2 weeks after exposure to SD at temperatures of 18 to 24°C. At lower temperatures or at near-critical photoperiods the response was delayed. The critical photoperiod for apical growth cessation varied from 21 hours in ecotype Steinkjer, Norway (64°N) to about 15 hours in ecotype Lankowitz, Austria (47°04′N). High-elevation ecotypes also had longer critical pholoperiods than low-elevation ecotypes from the same latitude. A detectable growth depression resulted from as little as 1 or 2 SDs of 10 hours, and with 4 or more SDs apical growth cessation took place. In contrast to the situation in the shoot, root growth was not affected by photoperiod. Accordingly, the top:root ratio is drastically affected by photoperiod. The critical photoperiod for cambial growth was shorter than that for apical growth in all ecotypes and cambial growth cessation was delayed for several weeks compared with cessation of apical growth. A transition to formation of late-wood tracheids with thick walls and narrow lumens took place upon exposure to SD. The photoperiodic effects were significantly modified by temperature, but the critical photoperiods were only slightly changed by temperature in the range of 12 to 24°C. However, a 10-hour “night” at 4°C caused growth cessation in continuous light in four ecotypes tested. Temperature optimum for apical growth under non-limiting photoperiods (24 hours) was 21°C in all ecotypes, but with little difference among 18,21 and 24°C. The Q10 for apical growth was 3.5 in the temperature range 12 to 18°C. The growth potential as determined in 24-hour photoperiods was not significantly different among the various ecotypes except for one northern eco-type which was clearly inferior to the others. However, the growth of ecotype Steinkjer (64°N) was greatly suppressed even by the long midsummer days at 59°40′N, thus demonstrating the misleading impression one gets of the growth potential of northern ecotypes when they are moved southwards.  相似文献

The West African Dwarf (WAD) goat from the humid zone of Nigeria is known for its trypanotolerance as well as for its resistance and resilience to Haemonchus contortus (haemonchotolerance). Another ecotype of WAD goat with a larger body size is found in the drier savanna zone of the country. We tested the hypothesis that the latter is less trypanotolerant, and less haemonchotolerant than the former ecotype because they have been less exposed to these infections and because of the likelihood of introgression of alleles for parasite susceptibility into the latter from neighbouring parasite-susceptible Sahelian genotypes. Two controlled experiments were carried out. In the first, we compared the responses in 8–9 month old kids of both ecotypes to subcutaneous infection with 5 × 106 Trypanosoma brucei. Infection in both ecotypes was characterised by (i) prepatent periods of 3 days; (ii) a modest peak parasitaemia 4–5 days post infection (pi), followed by rapid clearance of parasites from the blood to microscopically undetectable levels from D11 or D12 until the end of the experiment on D30 pi; (iii) a sharp but transient drop in PCV following peak parasitaemia, with no other clinical evidence of anaemia; and (iv) normal growth and a small but weakly significant change in body temperature. In a second experiment we infected groups of goats of both ecotypes with 6000 L3 of H. contortus. This infection also produced no significant changes in the PCV and body weight of the goats. Only a small percentage of the inoculum was recovered from both ecotypes at necropsy on D18 pi (Mean % recovery ± SE = 3.29 ± 0.61 for humid zone and 6.83 ± 2.72 for savanna goats) and there was no significant difference in their worm burdens. On the basis of these results we reject our hypothesis and conclude that the savanna WAD ecotype exhibits comparable, strong degrees of trypanotolerance and haemonchotolerance to its humid zone counterpart.  相似文献

The effects of low and moderate salinity (100 and 200 mM NaCl, respectively) and iso-osmotic stress generated by polyethylene glycol PEG (1) (–0.3 MPa) and PEG (2) (–0.6 MPa) on maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII), growth, photosynthesis, transpiration, dark respiration, water use efficiency (WUE), water content, chlorophyll, proline, Na+ and K+ concentrations were investigated in shoots of two ecotypes С3–С4 xero-halophyte Bassia sedoides (Pall.) Aschers. Plants were grown from seeds of two Southern Urals populations (Makan and Podolsk) differing in their bioproductivity. Aboveground biomass of the Makan plants was approximately 10-fold higher than that of the Podolsk ecotype. The plants of both ecotypes were sensitive to water deficit. They showed similar decrease in biomass, water content, net photosynthesis and transpiration intensity under both low and moderate osmotic stress (PEG). However, the content of сhlorophyll and free proline in shoots of the Podolsk plants increased under moderate osmotic stress (PEG(2)). Under salinity the differences between transpiration, Fv/Fm, WUE, water content, chlorophyll and proline concentrations in shoots of two ecotypes were no found. But, the Podolsk plants showed decrease in the growth parameters (1.5-fold), increase in the dark respiration intensity (2-fold) and the Na+/K+ ratio (1.2-fold) under moderate salinity (200 mM NaCl). Thus, the reduction of bioproductivity of the Podolsk ecotype under salinity was the result of ionic rather than osmotic factor of salinity. In the Podolsk plants the additional transpiration costs and consumption of assimilates (correspondingly) increased with the toxic sodium ion accumulation under salinity. This led to decrease in the growth parameters. Thus, two B. sedoides ecotypes have different adaptive strategies of tolerance to the ionic factor of salt stress at the level of the physiological processes associated with the dark CO2 gas exchange. Moreover, in less tolerant and productive Podolsk ecotype the increase in proline content in shoots characterized comparatively low adaptation to osmotic factor, and the increase in dark respiration and the Na+/K+ ratio pointed to relatively low resistance to ion factor of salinity as compared with the Makan ecotype.  相似文献

Drought is a major limitation for rice production in rainfed ecosystems. Identifying quantitative trait loci (QTLs) linked to drought resistance provides opportunity to breed high yielding rice varieties suitable for drought-prone areas. Although considerable efforts were made in mapping QTLs associated with drought-resistance traits in rice, most of the studies involved indica × japonica crosses and hence, the drought-resistance alleles were contributed mostly by japonica ecotypes. It is desirable to look for genetic variation within indica ecotypes adapted to target environment (TE) as the alleles from japonica ecotype may not be expressed under lowland conditions. A subset of 250 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of F8 generation derived from two indica rice lines (IR20 and Nootripathu) with contrasting drought-resistance traits were used to map the QTLs for morpho-physiological and plant production traits under drought stress in the field in TE. A genetic linkage map was constructed using 101 polymorphic PCR-based markers distributed over the 12 chromosomes covering a total length of 1,529 cM in 17 linkage groups with an average distance of 15.1 cM. Composite interval mapping analysis identified 22 QTLs, which individually explained 4.8–32.2% of the phenotypic variation. Consistent QTLs for drought-resistance traits were detected using locally adapted indica ecotypes, which may be useful for rainfed rice improvement.  相似文献

Ecotypic differentiation in the tussock‐forming sedge Eriophorum vaginatum has led to the development of populations that are locally adapted to climate in Alaska's moist tussock tundra. As a foundation species, E. vaginatum plays a central role in providing topographic and microclimatic variation essential to these ecosystems, but a changing climate could diminish the importance of this species. As Arctic temperatures have increased, there is evidence of adaptational lag in E. vaginatum, as locally adapted ecotypes now exhibit reduced population growth rates. Whether there is a physiological underpinning to adaptational lag is unknown. Accordingly, this possibility was investigated in reciprocal transplant gardens. Tussocks of E. vaginatum from sites separated by ~1° latitude (Coldfoot: 67°15′N, Toolik Lake: 68°37′, Sagwon: 69°25′) were transplanted into the Toolik Lake and Sagwon sites and exposed to either an ambient or an experimental warming treatment. Five tussocks pertreatment combination were measured at each garden to determine photosynthetic capacity (i.e., Vcmax and Jmax) and dark respiration rate (Rd) at measurement temperatures of 15, 20, and 25°C. Photosynthetic enhancements or homeostasis were observed for all ecotypes at both gardens under increased growth temperature, indicating no negative effect of elevated temperature on photosynthetic capacity. Further, no evidence of thermal acclimation in Rd was observed for any ecotype, and there was little evidence of ecotypic variation in Rd. As such, no physiological contribution to adaptational lag was observed given the increase in growth temperature (up to ~2°C) provided by this study. Despite neutral to positive effects of increased growth temperature on photosynthesis in E. vaginatum, it appears to confer no lasting advantage to the species.  相似文献

Summary We have examined the late-flowering behavior of two ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana, Sf-2 and Le-0. The late-flowering trait segregates as a single dominant gene in crosses with the early-flowering Columbia ecotype. This gene, which we refer to as FLA, is located at one end of chromosome 4 between RFLP markers 506 and 3843 and is thus distinct from previously mapped genes that affect flowering time. The extreme delay in flowering time caused by the FLA gene can be overcome by vernalization in both the ecotypes in which it occurs naturally and in the Columbia ecotype into which this gene has been introgressed.  相似文献

World populations or stock distinction of Tursiops truncatus has been difficult to assess, because of large variations in morphology, habitat, feeding habits, and social structure among areas, which may reflect phylogenetic segregation or ecological plasticity. In the Gulf of California, Mexico, two common bottlenose dolphin ecotypes (inshore and offshore) have been reported. The offshore ecotype is frequently observed in association with sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) but the reason for this is still unknown. To explore the degree of resource partitioning/overlap between these species and stocks, we used skin stable isotope values (δ13C, δ15N) to estimate quantitative metrics of isotopic niche width (Bayesian standard ellipse areas, SEAB) and estimated their diet composition using Bayesian isotopic mixing models. The inshore ecotype in different regions (north, central, and south) of the Gulf of California exhibited distinct δ15N values and SEAB, suggesting a latitudinal gradient in nitrogen sources of coastal localities. The SEAB of inshore and offshore bottlenose dolphin ecotypes was completely distinct, indicating resource partitioning. Associated offshore ecotype and sperm whales had overlapping SEAB. The isotopic mixing model indicates that a considerable proportion of both species’ diet is large Humbolt squid. Our results suggest that resource partitioning and species association are two strategies that bottlenose dolphin ecotypes use in this zone.  相似文献

Naturally adapted salt tolerant populations provide a valuable material for exploring the adaptive components of salt tolerance. Under this aspect, two populations of Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. were subjected to salt stress in hydroponics. One was collected from a heavily salt-affected soil in the vicinity of a natural salt lake, Uchhali Lake, in the Salt Range of the Punjab province of Pakistan, and the other from a normal non-saline habitat from the Faisalabad region. The NaCl treatments in Hoagland's nutrient solution were: Control (no salt), 50, 100, 150 and 200 mM of NaCl. After 8 weeks of growth in hydroponics produced biomass, ion relations, and photosynthetic capacity were measured in the differently adapted ecotypes. In the ecotype of C. dactylon from the Salt Range, shoot dry weight was only slightly affected by varying levels of salt. However, in contrast, its root weight was markedly increased. On the other hand, the ecotype from Faisalabad (non-saline habitat) showed a marked decrease in shoot and root dry weights under saline regimes. The ecotype from the Salt Range accumulated relatively less amount of Na+ in the shoot than did that from Faisalabad, particularly at higher salt levels. Shoot or root K+ and Ca2+ contents varied inconsistently in both ecotypes under salt stress. All the photosynthetic parameters, leaf water potential and osmotic potential, and chlorophyll content in both ecotypes were adversely affected by salt stress, but all these physiological attributes except turgor potential and soluble sugars were less affected at high salinities in the salt tolerant ecotype from Salt Range. This ecotype accumulated significantly higher organic osmotica (total free amino acids, proline, total soluble proteins, and total soluble sugars) under saline conditions than its intolerant counterpart. Overall, the salt tolerant ecotype of C. dactylon from the Salt Range showed high salt tolerance due to its restricted uptake of Na+ accompanied by an increased uptake of K+ and Ca2+ in the roots as well as shoot due to its higher photosynthetic capacity and accumulation of organic osmotica such as free amino acids and proline under saline conditions.  相似文献

The effects of cold acclimation of two ecotypes (Antarctic and Andes) of Colobanthus quitensis (Kunth) Bartl. Caryophyllaceae on their photosynthetic characteristics and performance under high light (HL) were compared. Non-acclimated plants of the Antarctic ecotype exhibited a higher (34%) maximal rate of photosynthesis than the Andes ecotype. In cold-acclimated plants the light compensation point was increased. Dark respiration was significantly increased during the exposure to 4 degrees C in both ecotypes. Cold-acclimated Antarctic plants showed higher Phi(PSII) and qP compared with the Andes ecotype. In addition, the Antarctic ecotype exhibited higher heat dissipation (NPQ), especially in the cold-acclimated state, which was mainly associated with the fast relaxing component of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ(F)). By contrast, the Andes ecotype exhibited a lower NPQ(F) and a significant increase in the slowly relaxing component (NPQ(s)) at low temperature and HL, indicating higher sensitivity to low temperature-induced photoinhibition. Although the xanthophyll cycle was fully operational in both ecotypes, cold-acclimated Antarctic plants exposed to HL exhibited higher epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle pigments (EPS) compared with the cold-acclimated Andes ecotype. Thus, the photosynthetic apparatus of the Antarctic ecotype operates more efficiently than that of the Andes one, under a combination of low temperature and HL. The ecotype differences are discussed in relation to the different climatic conditions of the two Colobanthus.  相似文献

The potential for gibberellins (GAs) to control stem elongation and itsplasticity (range of phenotypic expression) was investigated inStellaria longipes grown in long warm days. Gibberellinmetabolism and sensitivity was compared between a slow-growing alpine dwarfwithlow stem elongation plasticity and a rapidly elongating, highly plastic prairieecotype. Both ecotypes elongated in response to exogenous GA1,GA4 or GA9, but surprisingly, the alpine dwarf wasrelatively unresponsive to GA3. Endogenous GA1,GA3, GA4, GA5, GA8, GA9and GA20 were identified and quantified in stem tissue harvested atcommencement, middle and end of the period of most rapid elongation. Theconcentration of GAs which might be expected to promote shoot elongation washigher during rapid elongation than toward its end for both ecotypes. Whilethere was a trend for certain GAs (GA3, GA4,GA9, GA20) to be higher in stems of the alpine ecotypeduring rapid elongation, that result does not explain the slower growth of thealpine ecotype and the faster growth of the prairie ecotype under a range ofconditions. To determine if the two ecotypes metabolized GA20differently, plants were fed [2H]- or[3H]-GA20. The metabolic products identified included[2H2]-GA1, -GA8, -GA29,-GA60, -3-epi-GA1, GA118(-1-epi-GA60) and -GA77. The concentration of[2H2]-GA1 also did not differ between the twoecotypes and metabolism of [2H2]- or[3H]-GA20 was also similar. In the same experiments thepresence of epi-GA1, GA29, GA60,GA118 and GA77 was indicated, suggesting that these GAsmay also occur naturally in S. longipes, in addition tothose described above. Collectively, these results suggest that while stemelongation within ecotypes is likely regulated by GAs, differences in GAcontent, sensitivity to GAs (GA3 excepted), or GA metabolism areunlikely to be the controlling factor in determining the differences seen ingrowth rate between the two ecotypes under the controlled environmentconditionsof this study. Nevertheless, further study is warranted especially underconditions where environmental factors may favour a GA:ethylene interaction.  相似文献

Background and aims

Physiological integration can enhance the performance of clonal plants, but whether this differs between ecotypes and whether such difference is underlying their distribution have scarcely been addressed. We aimed to determine whether physiological integration differs between ecotypes and whether an ecotype with a wider distribution shows a greater capacity of physiological integration.

Methods

A garden experiment was conducted with ramet pairs of both ecotypes (grey-green and yellow-green ecotype) of a typical rhizomatous clonal plant, Leymus chinensis, using rhizome connection (connected vs. disconnected) and ecotype as factors. Physiological and biomass features were measured and compared to assess the effects of physiological integration for both ecotypes.

Results

Physiological integration enhanced the maximum net photosynthetic rate, apparent quantum efficiency, respiration rate, water use efficiency, and chlorophyll content of ramets no matter whether they were subject to nutrient-poor or -rich soil, as long as they were connected to other ramets. Moreover, such an effect on photosynthetic capacity and water use efficiency was larger for the grey-green ecotype than for the yellow-green ecotype.

Conclusions

The results suggested that grey-green ecotype has significantly greater capacity of physiological integration than yellow-green ecotype, which was assumed to be one of the underlying mechanisms of the wider distribution of the former in nature.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of mutual grafting on the cadmium (Cd) accumulation characteristics of two ecotypes (farmland and mining) of the potential Cd-hyperaccumulator Solanum photeinocarpum were studied through a pot experiment for one month. Four treatments were used in the experiment: ungrafted farmland ecotype (F-CK), ungrafted mining ecotype (M-CK), the farmland ecotype as the scion grafted onto rootstocks of the mining ecotype (F-Scion), and the mining ecotype as the scion grafted onto rootstocks of the farmland ecotype (M-Scion). Mutual grafting increased the rootstock biomass of both S. photeinocarpum ecotypes. However, mutual grafting decreased the scion biomass of F-Scion compared with F-CK and M-CK, and the scion biomass of M-Scion was higher than that of M-CK and lower than that of F-CK. The Cd content in the rootstock of M-Scion increased compared with F-CK, and the Cd content in the rootstock of F-Scion increased compared with M-CK, but mutual grafting decreased the Cd content in scions of both S. photeinocarpum ecotypes. Mutual grafting increased Cd extraction by rootstocks of both S. photeinocarpum ecotypes, but decreased extraction by scions. Therefore, mutual grafting can increase Cd accumulation in S. photeinocarpum rootstocks but not increase Cd accumulation in S. photeinocarpum scions in a short period.  相似文献

Plants are predicted to show floral adaptation to geographic variation in the most effective pollinator, potentially leading to reproductive isolation and genetic divergence. Many sexually deceptive orchids attract just a single pollinator species, limiting opportunities to experimentally investigate pollinator switching. Here, we investigate Drakaea concolor, which attracts two pollinator species. Using pollinator choice tests, we detected two morphologically similar ecotypes within D. concolor. The common ecotype only attracted Zaspilothynnus gilesi, whereas the rare ecotype also attracted an undescribed species of Pogonothynnus. The rare ecotype occurred at populations nested within the distribution of the common ecotype, with no evidence of ecotypes occurring sympatrically. Surveying for pollinators at over 100 sites revealed that ecotype identity was not correlated with wasp availability, with most orchid populations only attracting the rare Z. gilesi. Using microsatellite markers, genetic differentiation among populations was very low (GST = 0.011) regardless of ecotype, suggestive of frequent gene flow. Taken together, these results may indicate that the ability to attract Pogonothynnus has evolved recently, but this ecotype is yet to spread. The nested distribution of ecotypes, rather than the more typical formation of ecotypes in allopatry, illustrates that in sexually deceptive orchids, pollinator switching could occur throughout a species' range, resulting from multiple potentially suitable but unexploited pollinators occurring in sympatry. This unusual case of sympatric pollinators highlights D. concolor as a promising study system for further understanding the process of pollinator switching from ecological, chemical and genetic perspectives.  相似文献
