Summary The availability to oats of adsorbed sulphate in soils and of sulphate impurity in calcium carbonate was studied in pot-culture experiments. When calcium carbonate was added to soils with pH values ranging from 5.7 to 7.4 the uptake of sulphur by oats was increased, due probably to enhanced mineralization of soil organic sulphur. When the calcium carbonate contained sulphate impurity the uptake of sulphur was further increased by an amount comparable with the release of sulphate which could be expected from a reaction of the calcium carbonate with the exchangeable hydrogen of the soil. Sulphate in excess of this amount appeared to be largely unavailable. Uptake of sulphur by oats from calcareous sands containing large amounts of insoluble sulphate associated with calcium carbonate also suggested that soil sulphur in this form had very low availability to plants.Substantial increases in the amounts of sulphur extracted by reagents commonly used for the determination of adsorbed sulphate in soils occurred when soils were airdried at about 20°C. Decreases in adsorbed sulphate in soils following the growth of oats in pot culture confirmed that adsorbed sulphate is readily available to plants.  相似文献

The evaluation of plant-available sulphur in soils   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary Examination of a range of naturally occurring calcium carbonates and calcareous soils has shown that insoluble sulphate associated with calcium carbonate may comprise an important fraction of soil sulphur. One soil contained as much as 93 per cent of its sulphur in this form. It seems likely that this sulphate occurs as a co-precipitated or co-crystallized impurity in the calcium carbonate. Most surface soils had only low capacity to adsorb sulphate and contained only small amounts of sulphur in this form. Two acid surface soils and many acid subsoils, however, adsorbed sulphate quite strongly and in some acid subsoil clays adsorbed sulphate made up an important fractions of the total sulphur.Sulphate adsorption was found to be negligible above pH 6.5 and adsorbed sulphate may be determined by aqueous extraction after increasing the pH above this value by addition of solid calcium carbonate. Adsorption of sulphate during acid extraction of soils can lead to low values in the determination of acid-soluble sulphates. Sulphate so adsorbed can be determined by a second extraction with water after the addition of solid calcium carbonate to increase the pH to a value greater than 6.5.  相似文献

One-year old nectarine trees [Prunus persica, Batsch var. nectarina (Ait.) Maxim.], cv Nectaross grafted on P.S.B2 peach seedlings [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] were grown for five months in 4-litre pots filled with two alkaline soils, one of which was also calcareous. Soils were regularly subjected to fertigation with either ammonium sulphate or calcium nitrate providing a total of 550 mg N/tree. Trees were also grown in such soils receiving only deionized water, as controls. Rhizosphere pH, measured by the use of a microelectrode inserted in agar sheet containing a bromocresol purple as pH indicator and placed on selected roots, was decreased by about 2–3 units compared to the bulk soil pH in all treatments. This decrease was slightly less marked when plants were supplied with calcium nitrate rather than ammonium sulphate or control. Measurements conducted during the course of the experiment indicated that ammonium concentration was similar in the solution of soils receiving the two N fertilizers. During the experiment, soil solution nitrate-N averaged 115 mg L–1 in soil fertilized with calcium nitrate, 68 mg L–1 in those receiving ammonium sulphate and 1 mg L–1 in control soils. At the end of the experiment nitrate concentrations were similar in soils receiving the two N sources and bulk soil pH was decreased by about 0.4 units by ammonium sulphate fertigation: these evidences suggest a rapid soil nitriflcation activity of added ammonium. Symptoms of interveinal chlorosis in apical leaves appeared during the course of the experiment in trees planted in the alkaline-calcareous soil when calcium nitrate was added. The slightly higher rhizosphere pH for calcium nitrate-fed plants may have contributed to this. The findings suggest that using ammonium sulphate in a liquid form (e.g. by fertigation) in high-pH soils leads to their acidification and the micronutrient availability may be improved.  相似文献

Summary An investigation has been made of the effects upon soil dispersion of different sized particles of gypsum and of methods of counteracting this effect. A final, recommended procedure for particle size determination in gypsic soils has been formulated and which depends upon the fact that treatment of gypsum crystals with barium chloride solution forms a protective coating of barium sulphate which isolates the gypsum from all further reaction in an alkaline medium. Satisfactory results have been obtained for soils containing up to over 90 percent gypsum, even if present in very fine particles of less than 0.05 mm.Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations  相似文献

Summary A suction filter method is described, that allows soil solution to be isolated from soils with varying moisture content and with plant-cover without disturbance of actively growing plant roots. The reproducibility of the method was confirmed by the fact that the relative standard deviations of cation and anion concentrations in isolated soil solutions were of the same order of magnitude as those of corresponding chemical analyses. Evidence for soil solution remaining unchanged by the described isolation procedure was furnished by the close agreement between the thermodynamic solubility product and the calculated solubility product of dehydrated calcium sulphate in soil solution, based on estimated Ca2+ and SO 2− 4 concentrations in isolated soil solution and corresponding activity coefficients. The uses of the method in connection with studies in plant nutrition are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The application of fulvic acid to a saline-sodic soil augmented the solubility of zinc by thousands fold. Zinc fulvate when applied at levels equivalent to that of zinc sulphate was more effective in enhancing diffusion of zinc in the soil. Application of gypsum, zinc sulphate and fulvic acid significantly increased dry matter yield and uptake of zinc by rice crop in a saline-sodic soil. Application of gypsum with pressmud or with fulvic acid and zinc sulphate resulted in significantly higher yield and zinc uptake than in other treatments.  相似文献

Samples of two calcareous soils from central Iraq were amended with 2, 6 and 10 mg g−1 soil of agriculturegrade sulphur and incubated for 4, 8 and 12 weeks at 30°C and 70% water-holding capacity. At the end of each incubation period, soils were analyzed for sulphate, CaCO3 and CaSO4. The sulphate content of the soils increased, whereas the CaCO3 content decreased, with increasing S levels and incubation time. The gypsum formed was in proportion to the sulphur oxidised and the calcium released from CaCO3.  相似文献

Alleviation of soil acidity in Ultisol and Oxisol for corn growth   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Malaysian Ultisols and Oxisols are characterized by low pH, high soil solution Al concentration and Ca and/or Mg deficiencies, which are limiting to corn growth. An experiment was conducted to determine the changes in solid and soil solution phase properties of a representative Ultisol and Oxisol following applications of ground magnesium limestone (GML), gypsum and their combinations, and their effects on corn growth. A plot of pAl against lime potential (pH-1/2 pCa) showed that the points were mostly positioned between the theoretical lines for kaolinite-quartz and gibbsite equilibrium, reflecting the kaolinitic-oxidic mineralogy of the Ultisol and Oxisol. Gypsum application increased Al concentration in the soil solutions of the Ultisol, but had no significant effect on that of the Oxisol. The increase in Al concentration in the Ultisol was due to an increase in ionic strength. Gypsum application increased soil solution pH of the Oxisol due to release of OH as a result of ligand exchange between SO4 and OH ions on the oxides of Fe and/or Al. Exchangeable Al in both soils was reduced by gypsum application. The reduction was associated with solid phase immobilization through alunite formation; the soil solutions of soil samples treated with 2 and 4 t gypsum ha−1 were supersaturated with respect to alunite. Application of GML at 2 t ha−1 together with 1–2t gypsum ha−1 gave high top weight of corn. Relative top weight of corn was positively correlated with a soil solution Mg and Ca/Al concentration ratio, but negatively correlated with soil solution Al concentration. Foliar Al corn was positively correlated with soil solution Al concentration. Soil solution Al and Mg concentrations, and Ca/Al concentration ratio can be used as indices of soil acidity in Ultisols and Oxisols. ei]{gnB E}{fnClothier}  相似文献

The effect on clubroot of the addition to a mineral soil of calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate and sodium carbonate was studied in two field experiments during a 3-yr period. Applications of calcium carbonate (ground limestone) at 10 or 20 t/ha increased the soil pH from 6×7 to 7×9; sodium carbonate at 7×5 t/ha to pH 8×3 and calcium sulphate (gypsum) at 20 t/ha caused a slight depression in pH to 6×6. 98% of cabbage plants showed clubroot symptoms in the untreated plots after 3 yr and the percentages were 0×7, 1×6 and 66×6 for the calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate and calcium sulphate treatments respectively. Yields were significantly increased by all three materials. There were no significant differences in disease incidence or in yield when calcium carbonate was used at 10 or 20 t/ha either applied as a single application or as two half-rate applications. Soil from the calcium carbonate treated plots was used in a greenhouse experiment where the addition of inoculum of Plasmodiophora brassicae resulted in a large increase in clubroot incidence. There was no evidence that a biological suppressor was present in the high pH, low disease incidence soils.  相似文献

Sulphur and nitrogen changes in forest soils of East Africa   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Sulphur measurements made on soils in East Africa revealed the unexpected occurrence of sulphates in forest subsoils. Soil profiles from plantation and natural forests were analysed and a general pattern of sulphur distribution was found. It has been found that in addition to the sulphur cycle dependent upon microbiological oxidation of organic sulphur there exists a cycle whereby sulphate is circulated as such between trees and soil. The biological oxidation of organic sulphur in the soil is an extremely slow process compared with that of carbon and nitrogen. Treatment with calcium carbonate, nitrates and non-sulphur-containing amino acids had no effect upon the subsequent sulphate production. Incubation with either S-containing amino acids or with calcium sulphate however, resulted in an increased rate of soil-sulphur oxidation and this effect is being further investigated. An aqueous extract of wattle leaves proved to inhibit nitrification in the soil for short periods and evidence is presented which suggests that methionine may be involved in this effect.  相似文献

Despite a long history of application of phosphorus fertilisers, P deficiency is still a major limitation to crop production on calcareous soils. Recent field research conducted in highly calcareous soils in southern Australia has demonstrated that both grain yield and P uptake of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is greater when fluid forms of P are used compared to granular forms. To improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying this response to P in the field, we compared the lability, solubility and mobility of P applied as either a fluid (3 products) or granular (3 products) form to two calcareous and one alkaline non-calcareous soils in the laboratory. Over a five-week period, between 9.5 and 18 % of the P initially present in the fertiliser granules did not diffuse into the surrounding soil. The degree of granule dissolution was independent of the soil type. In contrast, P solubility, lability and diffusion were significantly greater when fluid products were applied to the calcareous soils, but not to the alkaline non-calcareous soil. These findings are discussed in relation to field trials results where fluid products outperformed granular fertilisers.  相似文献

Gypsum soils are among the most restrictive and widespread substrates for plant life. Plants living on gypsum are classified as gypsophiles (exclusive to gypsum) and gypsovags (non-exclusive to gypsum). The former have been separated into wide and narrow gypsophiles, each with a putative different ecological strategy. Mechanisms displayed by gypsum plants to compete and survive on gypsum are still not fully understood. The aim of this study was to compare the main chemical groups in the leaves of plants with different specificity to gypsum soils and to explore the ability of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analyzed with neural network (NN) modelling to discriminate groups of gypsum plants. Leaf samples of 14 species with different specificity to gypsum soils were analysed with FTIR spectroscopy coupled to neural network (NN) modelling. Spectral data were further related to the N, C, S, P, K, Na, Ca, Mg and ash concentrations of samples. The FTIR spectra of the three groups analyzed showed distinct features that enabled their discrimination through NN models. Wide gypsophiles stood out for the strong presence of inorganic compounds in their leaves, particularly gypsum and, in some species, also calcium oxalate crystals. The spectra of gypsovags had less inorganic chemical species, while those of narrow gypsum endemisms had low inorganics but shared with wide gypsophiles the presence of oxalate. Gypsum and calcium oxalate crystals seem to be widespread amongst gypsum specialist plants, possibly as a way to tolerate excess Ca and sulphate. However, other mechanisms such as the accumulation of sulphates in organic molecules are also compatible with plant specialization to gypsum. While gypsovags seem to be stress tolerant plants that tightly regulate the uptake of S and Ca, the ability of narrow gypsum endemisms to accumulate excess Ca as oxalate may indicate their incipient specialization to gypsum.  相似文献

Summary A growth chamber study was conducted to compare five granulated sulphur assemblages and a commercially available prilled sulphur with gypsum and flowers of sulphur as sources of sulphur for lucerne grown on two sulphur deficient soils, one from the Armstrong area of B.C. and one from California. Following one surface application of the various sulphur supplying materials at rates of 37.5 mg, 75 mg and 150 mg of sulphur per 3750 g of soil, four consecutive harvests were removed from the Enderby silt loam during a 145 day period and three cuttings were taken over a 119 day cropping interval on the Willits soil from California.Although gypsum and finely divided sulphur were the most effective sources, three of the five assemblages also had a favourable influence upon yield of lucerne, sulphur concentration and sulphur uptake. The three acceptable assemblages were sulphur-bentonite, sulphur-goulac-ammonium sulphate and sulphur-gypsum-goulac and they produced beneficial effects upon lucerne growth that were often comparable to those obtained with finely divided sulphur. On the basis of this investigation, it appears that certain granular high-analysis sulphur assemblages made from finely divided sulphur and binding agents, such as gypsum, ammonium sulphate, goulac and bentonite have satisfactory agronomic properties. Because these assemblages have suitable agronomic and physical properties they should be ideal for bulk blending with other granular fertilizer materials or for use in direct application to the soil. Wider scale testing of the sulphur-bentonite, sulphur-goulac-ammonium sulphate and sulphur-gypsum-goulac assemblages would seem to be justified. This paper was presented before the 12th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society of Soil Science, June 28, 1967, Macdonald College, Quebec.  相似文献

Iberian gypsophile plant communities are considered a priority for conservation by the European Community because of their highly specialized flora in gypsum outcrops in arid and semiarid regions. Despite the ecological importance of these ecosystems, the edaphic factors that constrain plant communities on gypsiferous soils remain unclear. It has been proposed that both the chemical and physical restrictive conditions of gypsum soils determine gypsophily in plants. Here we hypothesize that the rigors of the gypsum soil environment depends on topography, decreasing from flat areas on hilltops to south-oriented slopes and finally to slopes oriented to the north. We also hypothesized that the relaxation of the rigors of the gypsum soil environment with topography affects both to individual plant and community characteristics of gypsophile vegetation: we expect a reduction of gypsophyte abundance, an increase of diversity and the amelioration of facilitative interactions of plant species. We analysed the physical and chemical properties of gypsum soils that have been proposed that determine the rigors of the gypsum soil environment (i.e.: unbalanced ion concentrations and superficial soil crust). The predicted rigor gradient along topographical locations was confirmed and was mainly caused by superficial soil crust. The decreasing rigor gradient was accompanied by a fall in the abundance of gypsophytes. However, when gypsophytes were considered separately, several patterns were observed, indicating distinct tolerance to relaxation of rigor of the gypsum soil conditions and different competition abilities between gypsophytes. Plant species were more clumped, and gypsophile communities presented higher diversity, evenness and richness values where rigor of gypsum soil conditions were maximum (flat hilltop positions). Relaxation of rigor (north-oriented slopes) was characterized by loss of facilitative interaction between species and the dominance of the gypsovag Rosmarinus officinalis L., although richness was still very high, which can be attributed to the coexistence of gypsophytes and gypsovags. We conclude that the rigor of gypsum soil environment gradient with topography is mainly determined by superficial soil crust, and it is a crucial determinant of gypsophile plant communities.  相似文献

Nutrient management recommendations for fruit crops lack the understanding of the efficiency of soil fertilisation with manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn), which could substitute, in part, the traditional foliar applications. Fruit yield of trees in response to Zn and Mn supply via soil may be limited either by sorption reactions with soil colloids or low solubility of fertilisers. We investigated the effects of fertiliser sources and rates of Mn and Zn applied to soils with different sorption capacities on nutrient uptake, biochemical responses and biomass of Citrus. Two experiments were carried out with 2‐year‐old sweet orange trees that received applications of Mn or Zn. The first experiment evaluated the application of Mn fertilisers (MnCO3 and MnSO4) at three levels of the nutrient (0, 0.7 and 3.5 g plant?1 of Mn) in two types of soil (18.1% and 64.4% of clay, referred to as sandy loam and clay soils, respectively). The second experiment, likewise, evaluated Zn fertilisers (ZnO and ZnSO4) and nutrient levels (0, 1.0 and 5.0 g plant?1 of Zn). Application of Mn and Zn increased nutrient availability in the soils as well as leaf nutrient concentrations in the trees. The lowest rates, 0.7 g plant?1 of Mn and 1.0 g plant?1 of Zn, both as sulphate, were sufficient to supply these micronutrients to sufficient levels in leaves, flowers and fruits. Metal toxicity to plants occurred with higher doses of both nutrients and to a large extent in the sandy soil. In this case, protein bands lower than 25 kDa were observed as well a decrease on leaf chlorophyll content. In the clay soil, despite increased micronutrient concentrations in the plant, responses were less pronounced because of higher adsorption of metals in the soil. Superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1) isoenzyme activity was determined by non‐denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). The Cu/Zn‐SOD isoenzymes increased with increased Zn rates, but in contrast, when Mn was applied at the highest rate, the activity of Cu/Zn‐SODs decreased. The SOD activity pattern observed indicated increased production of superoxide and consequently an oxidative stress condition at the highest rates of Zn and Mn applied. The results demonstrated that the soil application of Mn and Zn can supply nutrient demands of orange trees, however the low solubility of fertilisers and the high sorption capacity of soils limit fertilisation efficiency. On the contrary, application of sulphate source in sandy soils may cause excess uptake of Mn and Zn and oxidative stress, which impairs the photosynthetic apparatus and consequently tree growth.  相似文献

In a field cropped with wheat, a high and low level of soil conduciveness to take-all were induced by applying a nitrogen fertilizer with either calcium nitrate or ammonium sulphate. From these two soils, two representative populations of fluorescent pseudomonads were tested for their in situ behaviour. Take-all index and root dry weight were assessed on plants cropped in soils infested with Gaeumannomyces graminis var tritici (Ggt) and each bacterized with one of the isolates of fluorescent pseudomonads. The bacteria tested can be split into three groups: antagonists which reduce take-all, deleterious isolates which aggravate the disease and neutral without evident effect on the disease. The predominance of antagonistic fluorescent pseudomonads in the NH4-treated soil and the predominance of deleterious ones in the NO3-treated soil was confirmed after statistical analysis. The microbial impact on take-all must be more considered as the resulting effect of divergent activities of both rhizobacteria types than the only consequences of the presence of antagonistic pseudomonads. All the high cyanogenic pseudomonads were antagonists in situ and were more numerous in the NH4-treated soil than in the NO3-treated soil.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of adding an alkaline material (containing calcium carbonate and gypsum) on the immobilization of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in a paddy soil slightly contaminated with Cd and Zn under flooded and non-flooded conditions in the laboratory. Adding the alkaline material increased the soil pH and significantly decreased the exchangeable fraction of all of the metals, especially for Cd (>75% decrease) and Zn (ca. 90% decrease), under both flooded and non-flooded conditions. Drying the flooded soil samples increased the ratio of exchangeable fraction to the total fraction, particularly for Cd. The exchangeable fraction ratio was lower in the dried, previously flooded samples that contained the alkaline material than in the samples that did not contain the alkaline material, indicating that adding the alkaline material would be an effective way of immobilizing heavy metals during the oxidation of anoxic soils. These results show that the alkaline material can be used to immobilize heavy metals under both anoxic and oxic conditions, and that the effects of flooding and amending a paddy soil with alkaline material on the chemical forms will be different between heavy metals.  相似文献

The reclamation of saline sodic soils requires sodium removal and the phytoremediation is one of the proven low-cost, low-risk technologies for reclaiming such soils. However, the role of Phragmites australis in reclaiming saline sodic soils has not been evaluated extensively. The comparative reclaiming role of P. australis and gypsum was evaluated in a column experiment on a sandy clay saline sodic soil with ECe 74.7 dS m?1, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) 63.2, Na+ 361 g kg?1, and pH 8.46. The gypsum at 100% soil requirement, planting common reed (P. australis) alone, P. australis + gypsum at 50% soil gypsum requirements, and leaching (control without plant and gypsum) were four treatments applied. After 11 weeks of incubation, the results showed that all treatments including the control significantly reduced pH, EC, exchangeable Na+, and SAR from the initial values, the control being with least results. The gypsum and P. australis + gypsum were highly effective in salinity (ECe) reduction, while sodicity (SAR) and Na+ reductions were significantly higher in P. australis + gypsum treatment. The reclamation efficiency in terms of Na+ (83.4%) and SAR (86.8%) reduction was the highest in P. australis + gypsum. It is concluded that phytoremediation is an effective tool to reclaim saline sodic soil.  相似文献

Scab conduciveness of 35 Tasmanian ferrosol soils, used for potato cropping, was compared in a glasshouse trial. Linear regressions showed no association between scab incidence and any of 12 individual soil chemical properties. However, using contingency tables, threshold levels were found for pH and exchangeable cations below which scab disease was less likely. The observed pH threshold in the range 5.0–5.2 was in accordance with similar findings from elsewhere and indicates the robustness of this threshold over a range of soil types and pathogen species. Scab was not observed on potatoes grown in soil with combined exchangeable Ca, Mg and K at 12 cmolc/kg or less. A strong correlation between soil pH and these exchangeable cations, particularly calcium, was found.  相似文献

Although CH 4 production is sensitive to temperature, it is not clear how temperature controls CH 4 production directly versus the production of organic substrates that methanogens convert into CH 4 . Therefore, this study was done to better understand how CH 4 production in rice paddy soil responded to temperature when the process was not limited by the availability of substrates. In a laboratory-incubation study using three Indian rice soils under flooded conditions, the effect of temperature on CH 4 production was examined. CH 4 production in acid sulphate, laterite, and alluvial soil samples under flooded conditions distinctly increased with increase in temperature from 15°C to 35°C. Laterite and acid sulphate soils produced distinctly less CH 4 than alluvial soils. CO 2 production increased with increase in temperature in all the soils. The readily mineralizable carbon C and Fe 2+ contents in soils were least at 15°C and highest at 35°C, irrespective of soil type. Likewise, a significant correlation existed between microbial population (methanogens and sulphate reducers) and CH 4 production. Comparing the temperature coefficients ( Q 10 ) for methane production within each soil type at low (15°C-25°C) and medium (25°C-35°C) temperature intervals revealed that these values were not uniform for both alluvial and laterite soils. But acid sulphate soil had Q 10 values that were near 2 at both temperature intervals. When these soil samples were amended with substrates (acetate, H 2 -CO 2 , and rice straw), there were stimulatory effects on methane production rates and consequently on the Q 10 values. The pattern of temperature coefficients was characteristic of the soil type and the nature of substrates used for amendment.  相似文献
