The spread of genes and individuals through space in populations is relevant in many biological contexts. I study, via systems of reaction-diffusion equations, the spatial spread of advantageous alleles through structured populations. The results show that the temporally asymptotic rate of spread of an advantageous allele, a kind of invasion speed, can be approximated for a class of linear partial differential equations via a relatively simple formula, c = 2 square root of (rD), that is reminiscent of a classic formula attributed to R. A. Fisher. The parameters r and D represent an asymptotic growth rate and an average diffusion rate, respectively, and can be interpreted in terms of eigenvalues and eigenvectors that depend on the population's demographic structure. The results can be applied, under certain conditions, to a wide class of nonlinear partial differential equations that are relevant to a variety of ecological and evolutionary scenarios in population biology. I illustrate the approach for computing invasion speed with three examples that allow for heterogeneous dispersal rates among different classes of individuals within model populations.  相似文献

The question of whether all species in a multispecies community governed by differential equations can persist for all time is one of the most important in theoretical ecology. However, criteria for this property vary widely, asymptotic stability and global asymptotic stability being two of the conditions most widely used. In fact neither of these criteria appears to reflect intuitive concepts of persistence in a satisfactory manner: the first because it is only a local condition, the second because it rules out cyclic behavior. We argue here that a more realistic criterion is that of “permanent coexistence,” which essentially requires that there should be a region separated from the boundary (corresponding to a zero value of the population of at least one species) which all orbits enter and remain within. A mathematical technique for establishing permanent coexistence is illustrated by an application to the long-standing problem of predator-mediated coexistence in a two-prey one-predator community.  相似文献

Many social animals live in stable groups, and it has been argued that kinship plays a major role in their group formation process. In this study we present the mathematical analysis of a recent model which uses kinship as a main factor to explain observed group patterns in a finite sample of individuals. We describe the average number of groups and the probability distribution of group sizes predicted by this model. Our method is based on the study of recursive equations underlying these quantities. We obtain asymptotic equivalents for probability distributions and moments as the sample size increases, and we exhibit power-law behaviours. Computer simulations are also utilized to measure the extent to which the asymptotic approximation can be applied with confidence.  相似文献

To stimulate the immune system's natural defenses, a post-infection HIV vaccination program to regularly boost cytotoxic T-lymphocytes has been proposed. We develop a mathematical model to describe such a vaccination program, where the strength of the vaccine and the vaccination intervals are constant. We apply the theory of impulsive differential equations to show that the model has an orbitally asymptotically stable periodic orbit, with the property of asymptotic phase. We show that, on this orbit, the vaccination frequency can be chosen so that the average number of infected CD4(+) T cells can be made arbitrarily low. We illustrate the results with numerical simulations and show that the model is robust with respect to both the parameter choices and the formulation of the model as a system of impulsive differential equations.  相似文献

Logistic、Mitscherlich、Gompertz方程是一类三参数饱和增长曲线模型,广泛地应用于许多学科领域.本文基于logistic方程饱和值K估计的三点法、四点法,推导出Mitscherlich、Gompertz方程K值的三点法、四点法估计公式,并以南亚热带季风常绿阔叶林中两种优势乔木厚壳桂、黄果厚壳桂种群为例,先用三点法或四点法估计出K值,再通过线性回归与非线性回归相结合的方法,可获得三个增长模型中三个参数的最优无偏估计.实例研究表明,两个优势种群增长数据均符合三个增长模型,但更符合增长曲线呈S形的logistic、Gompertz方程,且以logistic方程最适合于观察;黄果厚壳桂种群增长快于厚壳桂种群.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to justify an asymptotic method developed for the study of peristaltic transport in a tube of arbitrary cross section. Within the framework of long wave approximation, the three-dimensional nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations are reduced to a sequence of two-dimensional linear boundary value problems of Laplace and biharmonic operators. It is shown that, if a Reynolds number is less than some constant, the solution of the approximate equations is indeed an asymptotic approximation to the exact solution of the problem as the ratio of the maximum radius of the tube to the wave length of the peristaltic motion of the wall tends to zero, and the error estimates are expressed inL 2 norms. Furthermore, under the same condition the exact solution is shown to be unique and stable under arbitrary perturbation of spatially periodic disturbance. Application of the stability condition to peristaltic transport in a tube of circular cross section is given.  相似文献

We develop semiparametric estimation methods for a pair of regressions that characterize the first and second moments of clustered discrete survival times. In the first regression, we represent discrete survival times through univariate continuation indicators whose expectations are modeled using a generalized linear model. In the second regression, we model the marginal pairwise association of survival times using the Clayton-Oakes cross-product ratio (Clayton, 1978, Biometrika 65, 141-151; Oakes, 1989, Journal of the American Statistical Association 84, 487-493). These models have recently been proposed by Shih (1998, Biometrics 54, 1115-1128). We relate the discrete survival models to multivariate multinomial models presented in Heagerty and Zeger (1996, Journal of the American Statistical Society 91, 1024-1036) and derive a paired estimating equations procedure that is computationally feasible for moderate and large clusters. We extend the work of Guo and Lin (1994, Biometrics 50, 632-639) and Shih (1998) to allow covariance weighted estimating equations and investigate the impact of weighting in terms of asymptotic relative efficiency. We demonstrate that the multinomial structure must be acknowledged when adopting weighted estimating equations and show that a naive use of GEE methods can lead to inconsistent parameter estimates. Finally, we illustrate the proposed methodology by analyzing psychological testing data previously summarized by TenHave and Uttal (1994, Applied Statistics 43, 371-384) and Guo and Lin (1994).  相似文献

We consider Turing-type reaction-diffusion equations and study (via computer simulations) how the relationship between initial conditions and the asymptotic steady state solutions varies as a function of the boundary conditions. The results indicate that boundary conditions which are non-homogeneous with respect to the kinetic steady state give rise to spatial patterns which are much less sensitive to variations in the initial conditions than those obtained with homogeneous boundary conditions, such as zero flux conditions. The present study deals with the analysis of a predator–prey like model consisting of system of differential equations with piecewise constant arguments. A solution of the system with piecewise constant arguments leads to a system of difference equations which is examined to study boundedness, local and global asymptotic behaviour of the positive solutions. Using Schur–Cohn criterion and a Lyapunov function, we derive sufficient conditions under which the positive equilibrium point is local and global asymptotically stable. Moreover, we show numerically that periodic solutions arise as a consequence of Neimark-Sacker bifurcation of a limit cycle.  相似文献

New models for seed dispersal and competition between plant species are formulated and analyzed. The models are integrodifference equations, discrete in time and continuous in space, and have applications to annual and perennial species. The spread or invasion of a single plant species into a geographic region is investigated by studying the travelling wave solutions of these equations. Travelling wave solutions are shown to exist in the single-species models and are compared numerically. The asymptotic wave speed is calculated for various parameter values. The single-species integrodifference equations are extended to a model for two competing annual plants. Competition in the two-species model is based on a difference equation model developed by Pakes and Maller [26]. The two-species model with competition and dispersal yields a system of integrodifference equations. The effects of competition on the travelling wave solutions of invading plant species is investigated numerically.  相似文献

We link deterministic integrodifference equations to stochastic, individual-based simulations by means of branching random walks. Using standard methods, we determine speeds of invasion for both average densities and furthest-forward individuals. For density-independent branching random walks, demographic stochasticity can produce extinction. Demographic stochasticity does not, however, reduce the overall asymptotic speed of invasion or preclude continually accelerating invasions.  相似文献

There has been a rising interest in better exploiting auxiliary summary information from large databases in the analysis of smaller-scale studies that collect more comprehensive patient-level information. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, we propose a novel approach to synthesize information from both the aggregate summary statistics and the individual-level data in censored linear regression. We show that the auxiliary information amounts to a system of nonsmooth estimating equations and thus can be combined with the conventional weighted log-rank estimating equations by using the generalized method of moments (GMM) approach. The proposed methodology can be further extended to account for the potential inconsistency in information from different sources. Second, in the absence of auxiliary information, we propose to improve estimation efficiency by combining the overidentified weighted log-rank estimating equations with different weight functions via the GMM framework. To deal with the nonsmooth GMM-type objective functions, we develop an asymptotics-guided algorithm for parameter and variance estimation. We establish the asymptotic normality of the proposed GMM-type estimators. Simulation studies show that the proposed estimators can yield substantial efficiency gain over the conventional weighted log-rank estimators. The proposed methods are applied to a pancreatic cancer study for illustration.  相似文献

 The non-linear structure of deep, stochastic, gyrotactic bioconvection is explored. A linear analysis is reviewed and a weakly non-linear analysis justifies its application by revealing the supercritical nature of the bifurcation. An asymptotic expansion is used to derive systems of partial differential equations for long plume structures which vary slowly with depth. Steady state and travelling wave solutions are found for the first order system of partial differential equations and the second order system is manipulated to calculate the speed of vertically travelling pulses. Monte Carlo importance sampling for evaluating numerical integrationis discussed. We consider a parametric family of sampling distributionsand propose the use of the sampling distribution estimated bymaximum likelihood. The proposed method of importance samplingusing the estimated sampling distribution is shown to improvethe asymptotic variance of the ordinary method using the truesampling distribution. The argument is closely related to thediscussion of the paradox in Henmi & Eguchi (2004).
