Qualitative observations in several European zoos revealed a high proportion of obese individuals in different species of lemurs. This phenomenon was examined in both subspecies of the ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata variegata and Varecia variegata rubra). Data on body weight were obtained from 43 animals in 13 European zoos and were compared with body weights of wild ruffed lemurs. The captive individuals’ mean weight was significantly higher than either of two different samples of wild V. variegata variegata. Using a weight‐based definition of obesity, 46.5% of the individuals in our sample were obese. Neither significant differences in body weight between the two subspecies nor between sexes could be found. Body weight did not correlate with age. The findings are discussed with reference to the feeding ecology of ruffed lemurs and their nutrition in captivity and to implications for captive breeding programs for this species. Hematologic and serum chemistry values are presented for adult and juvenile red ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata rubra) and black and white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata variegata) maintained in a zoological collection. Hematologic and serum chemical values are compared between age groups and subspecies and with other primate species. Elevated hematocrit, total protein, and serum albumin values were noted. Significant differences in cholesterol, total protein, and serum albumin values between the two age groups are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to quantify the concentrations of crude protein, fat, ash, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, lignin, nonstructural carbohydrates, and gross energy in plant foods consumed by wild black and white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata). Calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, sodium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, molybdenum, and selenium concentrations were also determined. A total of 122 samples from 33 plant families and more than 60 species were collected and analyzed for their nutritional content. The specific nutrient needs of black and white ruffed lemurs are unknown, but quantifying the nutritional composition of the foods they consume in the wild will help nutritionists and veterinarians formulate more appropriate diets for captive ruffed lemurs. This information will also supply information on how man‐induced habitat changes affect the nutritional composition of foods consumed by free‐ranging lemurs. Standard biochemical parameters were determined in wild juvenile loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta living offshore Madeira Island, northeast Atlantic. We analyzed the influence of age, sex, sea surface temperature, and body condition index on biochemical parameters including uric acid, total bilirubin, total cholesterol, creatinine kinase (CK), glucose, total protein, urea nitrogen, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotranspherase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), albumin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), sodium (NA), potassium (K), chloride, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. Significant positive correlations were found between turtle body size and total cholesterol, total protein, and albumin. Total protein and the enzymes AST and CK were lower than reported levels in adults. Calcium levels were lower than those reported in adult or captive turtles, but similar to wild juveniles from Australian waters, and were interpreted as normal for this age category. These data may be useful to evaluate the health status of stranded or injured animals and to improve veterinary care at rehabilitation centers.  相似文献

Hematological and serum biochemical data obtained from non-pregnant, pregnant and post-partum squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciurea) were analyzed by canonical discriminant analysis (discriminant analysis with reduction of dimensionality). All animals were of wild origin and had been maintained under uniform environmental conditions at Tsukuba Primate Center for Medical Science, N.I.H., Japan. Months were standardized by the day of parturition. The calculated arithmetic means and standard deviations were listed for each item of measurement performed. Items detected statistically significant difference (p less than 0.01) between months were as follows: red blood cell count (RBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), hematocrit value (Ht), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), white blood cell count (WBC), albumin concentration (ALB), blood urea nitrogen concentration (BUN), total cholesterol concentration (T-CHO), triglyceride concentration (TG), alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) and calcium concentration (Ca). Results of canonical discriminant analysis showed that the value of the first canonical variate (Z1) decreased from the early period of pregnancy to the middle period, and that the second canonical variate (Z2) decreased from the middle period of pregnancy to the end of pregnancy. The meaning of their changes were discussed.  相似文献

Hair can be an important source of biological information, providing a record of such things as pollutant exposure, hormonal levels, and stable isotope ratios. Hair as a biological sample is easily accessible, easily stored, and resists degradation. Analysis of hair is particularly useful when studying rare and endangered species, such as lemurs, since it can be sampled noninvasively. However, to better interpret the results of stable isotope or other analyses, it is important to understand hair growth rates. We measured hair growth rates in captive aye-ayes (Daubentonia madagascariensis), red ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra), and black-and-white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata), both in winter (December 23, 2013, to January 13, 2014) and summer (July 10–31, 2013) at the Duke Lemur Center. Hair growth per week in all three species of lemurs differed significantly between the boreal summer and boreal winter. The aye-aye, black-and-white ruffed lemur, red ruffed lemur had a mean weekly hair growth of 0.195, 0.209, and 0.232 cm, respectively, in the summer. While the aye-aye, black-and-white ruffed lemur, and red ruffed lemur had a mean weekly hair growth of 0.239, 0.464, and 0.479 cm, respectively, in winter. We found no effect of age on hair growth rates, neither in the boreal summer, nor in the boreal winter for black-and-white ruffed lemurs and red ruffed lemurs. A pregnant black-and-white ruffed female displayed negligible hair growth during the northern winter, suggesting that pregnancy may affect the partitioning of resources away from such things as hair growth.  相似文献

The captive history of the ruffed lemur is presented with concentration on taxonomy, captive population and husbandry of the San Diego Zoo population. At the conclusion of 1985, the living population of black and white ruffed lemurs numbered 358; red ruffed lemurs totaled 125. The San Diego Zoo population, established between 1965 and 1970, began with two pairs of each subspecies. Intensive breeding at the Primate Propagation Center resulted in the birth of 135 black and white ruffed lemur infants and 95 red ruffed lemur infants as of January 7, 1986. Housing specifications are presented for the off-exhibit 96-unit breeding facility, describing enclosure size, material, nest box composition, and enclosure furniture. The diet is described, which emphasizes high-protein, high-fiber foods and leaves.  相似文献

Renal and hepatic subacute toxicity induced by the antihyperlipidaemic drugs: Bezalip-Pravastatin and Lopid was investigated in rats using serum biochemical parameters. Toxicological evaluation was performed in serum samples following the administration of the therapeutic dose regimens of the compounds that were previously shown to be effective in inhibition of 3-hydroxy-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase, the enzyme controlling the rate-limiting step in the synthesis of cholesterol, and acyl-CoA cholesterol acyl transferase (ACAT) which converts intracellular free cholesterol to cholesterol ester. Renal and hepatic subacute toxicity was evaluated by measuring enzyme activity or concentrations of: alanine aminotransferace, alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyltransferase, glucose, potassium, sodium, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid and creatinine. The use of the above serum biochemical parameters indicated that the overall toxicity impact of antihyperlipidaemic drugs was Bezalip = Pravastatin < Lopid. We have found that the Pravastatin--in contrast to the above antihyperlipidaemic drugs--only transiently affects the biochemical parameters associated with toxicity, but, it affects some of the biochemical parameters associated with hepatic and renal toxicity, up to a significantly lower extent than the antihyperlipidaemic drugs.  相似文献

Lemurs on St. Catherines Island, Georgia were tested for Trypanosoma cruzi infection to develop a better understanding of the epizootiology of the parasite in nonhuman primates in the southeastern United States. Fifty-six ring-tailed (Lemur catta), blue-eyed black (Eulemur macaco flavifrons), and black-and-white ruffed (Varecia variegata variegata) lemurs were tested by hemoculture and serology to determine the prevalence of T. cruzi in the population. Of those tested 3 (5%) were identified as culture positive and 25 (44.6%) as seropositive. When hemoculture results were compared with those from a similar study performed in 1997, prevalence remained unchanged. Genetic characterization of the 3 culture isolates indicated they belong to the T. cruzi IIa group, which is identical to strains previously isolated from raccoons on the island. Despite the occurrence of T. cruzi in the population, there was no evidence that the health of the lemurs was compromised as a result of infection. Based upon prevalence and available breeding records we speculate that both vertical and vector-mediated transmission play significant roles in the epidemiology of T. cruzi on the island. This also represents the first report of autochthonous infection in blue-eyed black and black-and-white ruffed lemurs.  相似文献

Blood biochemical parameters were compared for green turtles (Chelonia mydas) with and without green turtle fibropapillomatosis (GTFP) from both captive and wild populations in Hawaii (USA) and from a captive population from California (USA), during the period between 1994 and 1996. Statistical analysis did not detect an influence of disease in any of the blood parameters for free-ranging turtles; however, captive turtles in Hawaii with GTFP had significantly higher levels of alkaline phosphatase and significantly lower levels of lactate compared to non-tumored captive turtles. Multivariate analysis found that biochemical profiles could be used to accurately predict if turtles were healthy or afflicted with GTFP. Discriminant function analysis correctly classified turtles as being with or without GTFP in 89% of cases, suggesting that diseased animals had a distinct signature of plasma biochemistries. Measurements of blood parameters identified numerous differences between captive and wild green turtles in Hawaii. Levels of corticosterone, lactate, triglyceride, glucose, and calcium were significantly higher in wild green turtles as compared to captive turtles, while uric acid levels were significantly lower in wild turtles as compared to captive turtles. Additionally, turtles from Sea World of California (San Diego, California, USA), which had been in captivity the longest, had higher levels of alanine aminotransferase and triglycerides as compared to nearly all other groups. Differences in diet, sampling methods, environmental conditions, and turtle size, help to interpret these results.  相似文献

The two subspecies of ruffed lemurs (Vareica variegata variegata andVarecia variegata rubra) have been maintained in captivity since 1959 and all institutions which hold ruffed lemurs have contributed data to theVarecia International Studbook. Studbook data were used to analyze inbreeding effects on survival in both subspecies ofVarecia. Several variables, including offspring's inbreeding coefficient, litter size, mother's inbreeding coefficient, and mother's age, were examined for significant associations with percent survivorship per litter. Percent survivorship per litter was negatively correlated to the offspring inbreeding coefficient in the black and white ruffed lemurs (p<0.001) but no significant association was found for red ruffed lemurs. Although emphasis has been put towards the status of the red ruffed lemurs due to the small founder size, the black and white ruffed lemurs should also be managed with care due to the lower tolerance to inbreeding in captivity.  相似文献

A survey to identify the major intestinal species of aerobic bacteria, protozoa and helminths was conducted on captive and wild populations of ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta). Samples were collected from 50 captive lemurs at 11 zoological institutions in the United States. In Madagascar, 98 aerobic bacteria samples and 99 parasite samples were collected from eight sites chosen to cover a variety of populations across the species range. Identical collection, preservation and lab techniques were used for captive and wild populations. The predominant types of aerobic bacteria flora were identified via five separate tests. The tests for parasites conducted included flotation, sedimentation and FA/GC. Twenty-seven bacteria unique to either the captive or wild populations were cultured with eight of these being statistically significantly different. Fourteen bacteria common to both populations were cultured, of which six differed significantly. Entamoeba coli was the only parasite common to both the captive and wild populations. Giardia spp., Isospora spp., strongyles-type ova, Entamoeba spp. and Entamoeba polecki were found only in captive samples. Cryptosporidium, Balantidium coli, pinworm-type ova, and two fluke-like ova were seen only in wild samples. In addition, samples were compared for both bacteria and parasites from three unique field sites in Madagascar. In this three-site comparison, six types of bacteria were statistically significantly different. No significant differences regarding parasites were seen. Significant differences were found between the captive and wild populations, whereas fewer differences were found between sites within Madagascar. Although we isolated Campylobacter and Giardia, all animals appeared clinically healthy.  相似文献

Serum biochemical values were determined in blood samples collected from 48 shot fallow deer from the Brijuni islands and 45 sedated fallow deer (Dama dama L.) from hunting grounds in the continental part of Croatia. The parameters were compared with regard to age, sex and habitat. Statistically significant differences were found for serum total protein concentration, alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activity between young and adult island deer, as well as for total protein, triacylglyceride, cholesterol concentration and alkaline phosphatase activity between young and adult continental deer. In young animals, island males had higher albumin concentrations, while continental males had higher alkaline phosphatase values than females. In adult animals, island males had a higher blood urea nitrogen concentration, while continental males had higher albumin and cholesterol concentrations, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and creatine kinase activities. In this group, males exhibited lower bilirubin and triacylglyceride concentrations than females. Our results indicate that besides age, sex and sampling method, nutritional and environmental factors should be considered when evaluating serum biochemical parameters of fallow deer  相似文献

Recent efforts by North American zoos to establish a genetically viable captive population of Pallas' cats (Otocolobus manul) have been compromised by high newborn mortality (approximately 60%), primarily because of toxoplasmosis. The basis for this extreme susceptibility to toxoplasmosis is unknown. In the present study, the general health status of wild Pallas' cats in Mongolia was evaluated, including assessment of basal hematologic parameters and fecal corticoid metabolite concentrations. The prevalence of exposure to Toxoplasma gondii in Mongolian Pallas' cats, local domestic cats, and prey species also was determined based on serology and/or polymerase chain reaction analysis. Biologic samples (blood, feces, and/or brain tissue) were obtained from 15 wild Pallas' cats, 15 domestic cats, and 45 prey animals (rodents and pikas) captured in Mongolia during the summers of 2000 and 2001. Comparative data were obtained from nine captive Pallas' cats maintained in North American zoos. Based on physical examinations, complete blood counts, and blood chemistry analyses, only minor differences were observed in the general health status of wild and captive Pallas' cats. Fecal cortisol metabolite concentrations did not differ (P > 0.05) between populations, indicating that Pallas' cats in captivity and in the wild have similar basal adrenocortical activity. A pronounced difference (P < 0.01) in seroprevalence to T. gondii was observed between populations. Whereas all captive Pallas' cats exhibited elevated immunoglobulin titers (IgG > 2,048) to T. gondii, only two of 15 (13%) wild Pallas' cats were seropositive, with both cats having lower IgG titers (< 1,024). Furthermore, no evidence of exposure to this parasite was found in any of the Mongolian domestic cats or prey species. These findings suggest that wild Pallas' cats have minimal opportunity for exposure to T. gondii in their natural habitat and, typically, do not become infected with this parasite until being brought into captivity. Accordingly, maintenance of a viable captive population may require implementing effective strategies to prevent exposure of immunologically naive Pallas' cats to T. gondii and to reduce parasite transmission between seropositive females and their highly susceptible offspring.  相似文献

A loud call of the ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata) was analyzed for subspecific and gender differences according to four variables: pulse rate, median pulse duration, median high frequency, and median low frequency. These vocalizations of black-and-white and red ruffed lemurs and one hybrid ruffed lemur were recorded at the Duke University Primate Center (Durham, NC). Significant differences were found between subspecies but not between the sexes. Quantitative differences in this loud call of ruffed lemur subspecies indicate that these prosimians exhibit subspeciation trends similar to anthropoid primates for which comparable data exist. Preliminary data are presented that support the hypothesis that the vocalization functions as a terrestrial predator alarm call.  相似文献

Hematologic and serum chemistry values of the captive European wildcat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Hematologic and serum chemistry values were determined for 20 adult captive European wildcats (Felis silvestris) in Lleida (Catalonia, Spain). Seven wildcats (4 females and 3 males) were captured in the wild and 13 (4 females and 9 males) were born and raised in captivity. Samples were collected between September and December from 1993 to 1998. Blood was obtained by jugular venipuncture after administration of either ketamine and xylazine or ketamine and medetomidine. Females had significantly higher mean eosinophil counts, albumin concentration, (and A/G ratio) and lower mature neutrophil counts, although these differences were not clinically relevant. Results for many of the blood parameters fall within the reference range for domestic cats. Mean values for alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, creatine phosphokinase, and lactate dehydrogenase activities as well as blood urea nitrogen, glucose, and sodium concentrations were higher than the upper limit of the reference range for domestic cats.  相似文献

Blood samples and physiological data were collected from 634 bighorn sheep captured between 1980 and 1986 in the western United States. Bighorn sheep were evaluated for physiological parameters (temperature, pulse and respiration), selected biochemical parameters (cortisol, creatine phosphokinase (CPK), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), alkaline phosphotase (AP), potassium, sodium, chloride, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), selenium, glucose, total protein, plasma pH and plasma PCO2), and selected hematological parameters (packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin (HB), red blood cell count (RBC), and white blood cell count (WBC]. These parameters were compared among bighorn sheep captured by four different methods: drop-net (n = 158), drive-net (n = 249), chemical immobilization (n = 90) and the net-gun (n = 137). Biological parameters affected by stress, including temperature, respiration, cortisol, CPK, SGOT, potassium, glucose and WBC revealed significant differences among capture methods (P less than 0.05). Some blood parameter differences, including temperature, respiration, cortisol, glucose and WBC could be explained partially by the distribution of age and sex within capture method groups. Drop-net and net-gun methods of capture appeared to produce the least amount of alteration to biological parameters related to capture stress or compromise and capture mortality. Drive-net was similar to the former methods while chemical immobilization caused the greatest changes in the above physiological, biochemical and hematological parameters.  相似文献

The bonnet monkey is being increasingly used as a model in biomedical research. However, unlike the rhesus monkey, very little information on the hematological and biochemical characteristics of blood plasma is available. Comparative data on plasma biochemical parameters vis-a-vis rhesus and human is essential for utilization of this species in biomedical research. Efforts were made to determine selected serum enzymes, glucose, triglycerides, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, total protein, albumin, cholesterol, bilirubin, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, magnessium, potassium and total erythrocyte count, total leukocyte count, hemoglobin, PCV, ESR, and differential leukocyte count in groups of juvenile and adult bonnet monkeys of both sexes. The monkeys exhibited similar values for all the parameters in comparison to rhesus and human except for alkaline phosphatase. The value for alkaline phosphatase was 3–5 fold higher when compared to concentrations seen in rhesus monkeys and human beings. The investigation also describes the variations seen between adults and juveniles, as well as between the sexes. The data presented is valuable for scientists using this species of monkey as a human surrogate model.  相似文献
