The application of a specific species of willow—Salix amygdalina L., marked by high transpiration ability—is a cheap and effective method of landfill leachate disposal. A 2-year study examined the effectiveness of leachate evapotranspiration from soil–plant systems with willow species S. amygdalina L. Evapotranspiration from soil–plant systems planted with willow was from 1.28 up to 5.12 times higher than evaporation from soil surface barren of vegetation. This proves the usefulness of soil–plant systems with willow in landfill leachate treatment through vaporization. Evapotranspiration efficiency, as opposed to total amount of water added into the lysimeter, was not strong enough to vaporize all input of the landfill leachate in the lysimeters. This may indicate that the ground water requires isolation when soil systems remain under landfill leachate irrigation. Linear dependence between willow biomass growth and transpiration was observed to be significant (p < 0.05). Additionally, the research showed that the application of sewage sludge into the soil caused an increase in vaporization efficiency.  相似文献

The northern section of the Upper Mississippi River supports a diverse macrobenthic assemblage. Distribution of this benthic fauna, benthic community structure, and factors which influences which influence both of these phenomena in these upper pools are reviewed. Dumping of heavy loads of municipal and industrial wastes from the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area has severely stressed the benthic community. Once abundant, pollution-sensitive mayflies, Hexagenia bilineata and H. limbata, are noticeably absent, replaced by pollution-tolerant oligochaetes and midges (notably Chironomus). Harmful effects of this pollution are not restricted to the area immediately downstream from the Twin Cities. In Lake Pepin, the Hexagenia population has suffered a drastic decline. The benthic community is characterized by low species diversity and a dominant, pollution-tolerant Chironomus plumosus — Oligochaeta — Sphaeriidae — Hirudinea community complex. Farther south, effects of the high organic load which originates approximately 226 km upstream are ameliorated. Inundation of large, diverse land areas contributes to the great ecological diversity in Pools No. 7 and No. 8. In Navigation Pool No. 7, benthic standing crops in the backwater pool areas (biomass range: 2.08–26.96 g m–2) exceed those in the main channel (biomass range: 0.05–1.02 g m–2). Greater numbers of burrowing mayflies and mollusks were found in the pool areas. Of 131 taxa collected from 1976–1977 in Lake Onalaska, which occupies most of Pool No. 7, eight dominant groups — Oligochaeta, Hirudinea, Isopoda, Amphipoda, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Gastropoda, and Pelecypoda — accounted for 90–93% of the macroinvertebrates. In Pool No. 8, over half of the 144 benthic taxa collected during the summer of 1975 were insect nymphs and larvae. Oligochaetes were by far the most ubiquitous and dominant macroinvertebrates. Habitat preferences of particular benthic forms reflected distributional relationships between macroinvertebrates and physical-chemical conditions. Benthic production, in terms of total wet weight m–2 and macroinvertebrate density in each study area, was generally greater in the more eutrophic areas. However, fewer taxa were supported in these areas. These taxa were generally pollution-tolerant organisms, such as oligochaetes and certain chironomids, which were capable of burrowing into depositional-type substrates. More taxa and greater numbers of gill breathers and filter feeders, such as caddisflies, mayflies, stoneflies, and dipterans, were collected from less eutrophic areas.  相似文献

A study was made of microinjections of antagonists of various neuromodulators on the dynamics of inhibition of the spino-bulbo-spinal reflexes which were evoked by stimulation of the central gray matter (PAG) in rats anesthetized with chloralose. Injections were made into the reticular gigantocellular nucleus (GN), which is the basic supraspinal center of this reflex. Administering methysergide (a blocker of serotonin receptors) was accompanied by significant (two to four times) diminution of inhibition evoked by PAG stimulation with a short, high-frequency series of stimuli. Long inhibition caused by long, rhythmic stimulation of the PAG was diminished less significantly: from 6–10 to 2.5–4 min. When the opiate receptors of the GN neurons were blocked with naloxone, duration of inhibition was reduced by two to five times. The most clearly expressed diminution of both types of inhibitions was noted with injections of haloperidol, an antagonist of catecholamines. Our data indicate that evidently all of these neuromediator (neuromodulator) systems participate in inhibition of high-threshold, reflex activity of the reticular formation evoked by stimulation of the PAG, but their participation in this process is unequal.A. Inhibition in the olfactory bulb of the carp was studied by recording potentials from secondary neurons intracellularly. Three types of inhibition — trace, early, and late — can arise in neurons of the olfactory bulb. Trace inhibition corresponds to hyperpolarization about 20 msec in duration, which is closely connected with the spike, but it is not after-hyperpolarization but an IPSP. Early and late inhibition correspond to IPSPs of different parameters. The first has a latency of 0–50 msec (relative to the spike) and a duration of 60–400 msec; the corresponding values for the second are 100–400 msec and 0.5–3 sec. We used the hydrochemical model GWLF to estimate terrestrial diffuse fluxes from ungauged areas of a coastal plain catchment, the Choptank River basin. The gauged area of the basin is 17% of the land surface, and we divided the remaining ungauged area into 21 subbasins. Three comparative approaches were used: (1) application of area yield coefficients based on 11 years of observations from the gauged area to extrapolate over ungauged subbasins without modeling, (2) application of GWLF to estimate export from all subbasins using model parameters calibrated in the gauged subbasin, and (3) application of GWLF with parameter adjustments based on the local characteristics in each subbasin. Comparison of the predicted export from 6 selected subbasins with observed export data showed that application of GWLF with local adjustments reduced model errors of N export from 43% to 27%. With only one adjustment for sediment P, application of GWLF alone reduced errors of P export from 92%to 40–45%, with or without local adjustments for flow and sediment retention. The data supported the hypothesis that significant spatial variations in N and P yields introduce large errors when extrapolating from gauged to ungauged subbasins, and estimated TN and TP yield coefficients varied over 1–21 kg N and 0.1–0.5 kg P ha–1 y–1 in ungauged areas due to varying human population densities, soil drainage characteristics, and amounts of agriculture. The most accurate estimates of terrestrial diffuse sources were combined with point source discharges and wet atmospheric inputs to estimate annual average inputs of 2.5 × 106 kg N and 5.8 × 104 kg P y–1 to the Choptank estuary during 1980–1996. These results illustrate the problems of spatial extrapolation from gauged to ungauged areas and emphasize the need for application of local characteristics for accurate assessment of watershed export.  相似文献

The development of a population of morphologically differentiated mouse neuroblastoma cells was investigated during culture in a medium with a pH of 8.0–8.2. The original population split into two subpopulations — one of proliferating and the other differentiating cells — on the third day of culture in modified medium. Changes in the morphometric parameters of cells differentiating with time was investigated in vivo. A significant correlation between somatic dimensions and neurite length was found in differentiating cells. This implies that degree of morphological differentiation may be determined by size of the soma when using this technique for inducing differentiation. The patterns noted may serve for further research into morphofunctional changes produced by induced differentiation of neuroblastoma cells.A. A. Differential labeling of sister chromatids was achieved simultaneously in murine alveolar macrophages, regenerating liver, and bone marrow cells of partially hepatectomized mice as well as in alveolar macrophages and bone marrow cells of nonhepatectomized mice. The mean frequency of SCE/cell ±S.D. and the percentage of second division cells for each cell type were determined. No significant differences in mean frequencies of SCE/cell were observed among the cell types or between hepatectomized (alveolar macrophages –3.6±2.2, bone marrow –3.4±2.2; regenerating liver –3.6±2.4) and nonhepatectomized (alveolar macrophages —3.4 ±1.9; bone marrow —2.9±1.8). Although the percentage of second division cells was dependent upon cell type, no significant differences were apparent between hepatectomized (alveolar macrophages —57±8%; bone marrow —37±6%; regenerating liver –65±6%) and nonhepatectomized mice (alveolar macrophages –53±6%; bone marrow –36±4%). Comparisons between BrdU treated and nontreated nonhepatectomized mice revealed no significant alteration in mitotic yields.  相似文献

The hydrogeology between the catchment area and the divided dystrophic Lake Fuchskuhle with respect to the genesis and the land-water interactions were investigated. Water levels at numerous locations in the catchment area were measured in order to characterize the hydrology. The water balance of the area was calculated based on long term climatic investigations. The geology of the peat was documented at 25 sampling points by cores collected with a peat drill. Chemical parameters including pH, total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations, DOC concentration, colour (SAK 436 m–1) and the UV254/DOC ratio in the catchment area and in two compartments (NE and SW compartment) were determined. The chemical fluxes of DOC, nitrogen and phosphorus from the catchment area into one compartment (SW compartment) were determined. During the genesis of the Lake Fuchskuhle area two aquifer systems (local peat aquifer, regional sandy main aquifer) developed. Both aquifers are largely independently with almost no lateral interactions. Two compartments are supplied with water from the local peat aquifer. From the other two compartments, however, water is flowing out into the peat body. During high groundwater inflow into the SW compartment higher concentration of DOC, nitrogen and phosphorus in the SW compartment were detected. The fen can be divided in two parts: in the meso — to eutrophic fen northwest and the mainly meso — to oligotrophic — acid fen in the southeast. The significant differences in parameters such as pH, conductivity and DOC concentration gave a clear picture of the heterogeneity of the two compartments and their dependence on the catchment area with the two aquifers.  相似文献

Antidromic responses of parasympathetic preganglionic neurons (PPN) in the sacral spinal cord evoked by stimulation of the pelvic nerve were studied in acute experiments on anaesthetized and immobilized cats by means of extracellular recording technique. The conduction velocities for preganglionic axons were calculated from the latency of these responses. It was shown that the upper limits of the conduction velocities for sacral parasympathetic axons extended the range (limit 12–15 m/sec) previously described: The velocities varied from 0.9 to 30.5 (mean 11.3±0.47) m/sec. According to the axonal conduction velocities the PPN were divided into four groups: the first group with conduction velocities from 0.9 to 3.0 m/sec; the second — 4.0–12; the third — 13–21; and the fourth group — 21–30 msec. PPN of the second group quantitatively prevailed — 57.6%, those of the third group represented 29.9%, and those of the first and fourth groups 6.8 and 6.2% of the total amount of PPN, respectively. Relative topic specialization of the second and third PPN groups was revealed. The density of PPN distribution in the intermediolateral region was higher in the second group than in the third one, while in ventral parts of the ventral horn concentration of the third PPN group was higher than that of other groups. The ultrastructure of the lateral part of laminae VI and VII of the spinal gray matter (the location of most of the terminal branches of the rubrospinal tract) was investigated in cats under normal conditions and at various times after destruction of the red nucleus. The neuron population of this region is formed by cells fairly homogeneous in size (25–40µ). The structure of the dendritic profiles is simple and they carry only infrequent and small membranous appendages. Most synapses are axo-dendritic. The axon terminals are divided into three groups depending on the size and shape of the synaptic vesicles and the presence of post-synaptic specialization. A few glomerular axon terminals contacting with various structures are found. Small axon terminals located chiefly on dendrites and their appendages show degenerative changes 1–8 days after destruction of the red nucleus. As a rule the degenerating terminals contain round synaptic vesicles. The glomerular terminals do not degenerate.A. A. Inre Verkviken, a fjord-like, 20 m deep inlet in northern Åland, SW Finland, was probably a holomictic brackish-water lake nearly completely isolated from the sea by land uplift (about 0.5 cm yr–1) before 1929 when a canal was built to the Bothnian Sea. The canal was enlarged in the 1950s and again in 1978, keeping Inre Verkviken brackish (5–6). Inre Verkviken is now (the 1990s) in a phase of periodic meromixis — for the second time in about 100 years — as it undergoes a second process of lake formation due to land uplift. Anoxic conditions often prevail below 10–12 m depth. The summer oxygen conditions are unpredictable as they depend on the spring mixing patterns, which again largely depend on the duration of ice cover, the meteorological conditions, and the timing and quantity of spring runoff.  相似文献

Beef heart cytochromec oxidase was reconstituted in asolectin liposomes containing the pH indicator fluorescein-phosphatidylethanolamine (FPE) by the cholate-dialysis procedure. The influence of PFE on the asolectin liposome size and of the removal of subunit III from the complex on its incorporation into liposomes was analyzed by freeze-fracture electron microscopy. Samples were frozen without the addition of cryoprotectants. The vesicle size distribution of native enzyme reconstituted into asolectin liposomes was homogenous, 84% of the population having a diameter of 14–37 ± 7.5 mm. The preparation containing FPE had a similar vesicle size distribution, but with bigger diameter range (20–50 nm). In all three different types of proteoliposome preparations the majority of particles containing vesicles was found to have 1 particle (42–81%). The absence of subunit III did not influence the incorporation of the enzyme into the liposomes and was as good as the preparation with native enzyme (>99%). Therefore we conclude that the suppression of the proton pump activity was due to the intrinsic properties of subunit III and not to defective incorporation into artificial membrane systems.Dedicated to the memory of Dr. R. To assess the relative influence of edaphoclimatic gradients and stand replacing disturbance on the soil respiration of Oregon forests, we measured annual soil respiration at 36 independent forest plots arranged as three replicates of four age classes in each of three climatically distinct forest types. Annual soil respiration for the year 2001 was computed by combining periodic chamber measurements with continuous soil temperature measurements, which were used along with site-specific temperature response curves to interpolate daily soil respiration between dates of direct measurement. Results indicate significant forest type, age, and type × age interaction effects on annual soil respiration. Average annual soil respiration was 1100–1600, 1500–2100, and 500–900 g C m−2 yr−1 for mesic spruce, montane Douglas-fir, and semi-arid pine forests respectively. Age related trends in annual soil respiration varied between forest types. The variation in annual soil respiration attributable to the climatic differences between forest types was 48%(CV). Once weighted by the age class distribution for each forest type, the variation in annual soil respiration attributable to stand replacing disturbance was 15%(CV). Sensitivity analysis suggests that the regional variation in annual soil respiration is most dependent on summer base rates (i.e. soil respiration normalized to a common temperature) and much less dependent on the site-specific temperature response curves (to which annual rates are relatively insensitive) and soil degree-days (which vary only 10% among plots).  相似文献

Gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), a filter feeding omnivore, can consume phytoplankton, zooplankton and detritus and is a common prey fish in U.S. water bodies. Because of their feeding habits and abundance, shad have the potential to affect primary productivity (and hence water quality) directly through phytoplankton grazing and indirectly through zooplankton grazing and nutrient recycling. To test the ability of shad to influence primary productivity, we conducted a 16-day enclosure study (in 2.36-m3 mesocosms) and a 3-year whole-pond manipulation in 2–5 ha earthen ponds. In the mesocosm experiment, shad reduced zooplankton density and indirectly enhanced chlorophyll a concentration, primary productivity, and photosynthetic efficiency (assimilation number). While shad did not affect total phytoplankton density in the mesocosms, the density of large phytoplankton was directly reduced with shad. Results from the pond study were not consistent as predicted. There were few changes in the zooplankton and phytoplankton communities in ponds with versus ponds without gizzard shad. One apparent difference from systems in which previous work had been conducted was the presence of high densities of a potential competitor (i.e., larval bluegill) in our ponds. We suggest that the presence of these extremely high larval bluegill densities (20–350 larval bluegill m–3; 3–700 times higher density than that of larval gizzard shad) led to the lack of differences between ponds with versus ponds without gizzard shad. That is, the influence of gizzard shad on zooplankton or phytoplankton was less than the influence of abundant bluegill larvae. Differences in systems across regions must be incorporated into our understanding of factors affecting trophic interactions in aquatic systems if we are to be able to manage these systems for both water quality and fisheries.  相似文献

In view of the reports that nitric oxide modulates the neurotransmitters implicated in obsessive–compulsive disorder, patients with obsessive–compulsive disorder exhibit higher plasma nitrate levels, and drugs useful in obsessive–compulsive disorder influence nitric oxide, we hypothesized that nitric oxide may have some role in obsessive–compulsive behavior. We used marble-burying behavior of mice as the animal model of obsessive–compulsive disorder, and nitric oxide levels in brain homogenate were measured using amperometric nitric oxide-selective sensor method. Intraperitoneal administration of nitric oxide enhancers viz. nitric oxide precursor—l-arginine (800 mg/kg), nitric oxide donor—sodium nitroprusside (3 mg/kg) or phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor—sildenafil (3 mg/kg) significantly increased marble-burying behavior as well as brain nitrites levels, whereas treatment with 7-nitroindazole—neuronal nitric oxide synthase inhibitor (20–40 mg/kg, i.p.) or paroxetine—selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (5–10 mg/kg, i.p.) dose dependently attenuated marble-burying behavior and nitrites levels in brain. Further, co-administration of sub-effective doses of 7-nitroindazole (10 mg/kg) and paroxetine (2.5 mg/kg) significantly attenuated marble-burying behavior. Moreover, pretreatment with l-arginine (400 mg/kg, i.p.), sodium nitroprusside (2.0 mg/kg, i.p.) or sildenafil (2.0 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly attenuated the inhibitory influence of 7-nitroindazole (40 mg/kg) or paroxetine (10 mg/kg) on marble-burying behavior as well as on brain nitrites levels. None of the above treatment had any significant influence on locomotor activity. In conclusion, obsessive compulsive behavior in mice appears related to nitric oxide in brain, and anti-compulsive effect of paroxetine appears to be related to decrease central levels of nitric oxide.  相似文献

Long-term data on nitrogen chemistry of streams draining Konza Prairie Biological Station (Konza), Kansas were analyzed to assess spatial and temporal patterns and examine the influence of agricultural activity on these patterns. Upland watersheds of Konza are predominantly tallgrass prairies, but agricultural fields and riparian forests border the lower reaches of the streams. We have up to 11 years of data in the relatively pristine upland reaches and 4 years of data on wells and downstream reaches influenced by fertilized croplands. Seasonal and spatial patterns in total nitrogen (TN) concentrations were driven largely by changes in the nitrate (NO3 ) concentrations. A gradient of increasing NO3 concentrations occurred from pristine upland stream reaches to the more agriculturally-influenced lowland reaches. Nitrate concentrations varied seasonally and were negatively correlated with discharge in areas influenced by row-crop agriculture (p = 0.007). The NO3 concentrations of stream water in lowland reaches were lowest during times of high precipitation, when the relative influence of groundwater drainage is minimal and water in the channel is primarily derived from upland prairie reaches. The groundwater from cropland increased stream NO3 concentrations about four-fold during low-discharge periods, even though significant riparian forest corridors existed along most of the lower stream channel. The minimum NO3 concentrations in the agriculturally influenced reaches were greater than at any time in prairie reaches. Analysis of data before and after introduction of bison to four prairie watersheds revealed a 35% increase of TN concentrations (p < 0.05) in the stream water channels after the introduction of bison. These data suggest that natural processes such as bison grazing, variable discharge, and localized input of groundwater lead to variation in NO3 concentrations less than 100-fold in prairie streams. Row-crop agriculture can increase NO3 concentrations well over 100-fold relative to pristine systems, and the influence of this land use process over space and time overrides natural processes.  相似文献

Replication times for all important chromosome bands, of both types R and Q (277 structures) are analysed. — The R-bands form a group of structures whose DNA replicates during the early S-phase, while the DNA situated in the Q-bands replicates during the late S-phase. — There may not exist overlapping between replication times of these two types of structures. — The widest R-bands are those which are the earliest to replicate; in general, the most intense Q-bands are those which are the latest to replicate. Especially among these last ones, a certain asynchronism exists between the replication times. Finally the heterochromatin of chromosomes 1, 16 and Y and of the short arms of the acrocentrics could contain two types of DNA which replicate at different times.  相似文献

Two models of postural tremor — induced by cold (shivering) and by injection of oxotremorine into the caudate nucleus (caudate tremor) — were compared in experiments on cats. Both models shared the same electromyographic picture of tremor; the frequency of activity of motor units working independently was 4–12 spikes/sec. Both types of tremor were potentiated by cold stimulation of temperature receptors and were inhibited by electrical stimulation of the medial preoptic region of the hypothalamus and by intravenous injection of cholinomimetics. Caudate tremor, unlike shivering, ceased after intravenous injection of scopolamine (an antiparkinsonism drug). On the basis of data on motoneuron function it is concluded that both types of tremor are analogs of physiological postural tremor. The selective inhibitory action of scopolamine on caudate tremor reflects only the mediator organization of structures in the caudate nucleus and cannot therefore serve as the basis for the conclusion that this disturbance of motor activity is a model of pathological postural tremor.O. Since terrestrial invertebrates are often consumed by stream fishes, land-use practices that influence the input of terrestrial invertebrates to streams are predicted to have consequences for fish production. We studied the effect of riparian land-use regime on terrestrial invertebrate inputs by estimating the biomass, abundance and taxonomic richness of terrestrial invertebrate drift from 15 streams draining catchments with three different riparian land-use regimes and vegetation types: intensive grazing — exotic pasture grasses (4 streams), extensive grazing — native tussock grasses (6 streams), reserve — native forest (5 streams). Terrestrial invertebrate drift was sampled from replicated stream reaches enclosed by two 1 mm mesh drift nets that spanned the entire channel. The mean biomass of terrestrial invertebrates that entered tussock grassland (12 mg ash-free dry mass m–2 d–1) and forest streams (6 mg AFDM m–2 d–1) was not significantly different (p > 0.05). However, biomass estimated for tussock grassland and forest streams was significantly higher than biomass that entered pasture streams (1 mg AFDM m–2 d–1). Mean abundance and richness of drifting terrestrial invertebrates was not significantly different among land-use types. Winged insects contributed more biomass than wingless invertebrates to both pasture and tussock grassland streams. Winged and wingless invertebrates contributed equally to biomass entering forest streams. Land use was a useful variable explaining landscape-level patterns of terrestrial invertebrate input for New Zealand streams. Evidence from this study suggests that riparian land-use regime will have important influences on the availability of terrestrial invertebrates to stream fishes.  相似文献

A procedure was developed which demonstrates the expression of differential resistance in pine callus tissues to the fungal pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands. Callus tissues were maintained on a modified Murashige and Skoog medium with 10–5M 2,4-D and inoculated with hyphae of P. cinnamomi at 26°C in the dark. The number of intracellular hyphae was used as an index of resistance.
