1. The hypothesis under test was that larvae of Dinocras cephalotes (Curtis), Perla bipunctata Pictet, Isoperla grammatica (Poda), and Perlodes microcephalus (Pictet) differed markedly in their diel activity and feeding patterns. Mature larvae collected about 1 month prior to adult emergence were used either for gut analyses or for observations of their activity and feeding patterns in three stream tanks with natural substrata and glass bottoms, so that activity could be observed above and below the substratum. A dull red light was used for observations in the dark. Food (larvae of Ephemeroptera, Simuliidae, and Chironomidae) was provided in excess. 2. Larvae for gut analyses were taken 1 h before dusk or dawn (n = 30 larvae per species for each day or night sample). The only species with food in the gut for the day samples was P. microcephalus. All species fed at night, the mean number of prey per larva being very similar for D. cephalotes, P. bipunctata, and I. grammatica but significantly higher for P. microcephalus. Most prey were insect larvae, especially Simuliidae and Chironomidae. 3. Diel activity patterns of single larvae differed interspecifically but not intraspecifically. Larvae of D. cephalotes and P. bipunctata were rarely active during the day; their activity increased at dusk and decreased at dawn, and was highest during the night; their success at prey capture was highest at dusk and dawn, with an ambush rather than a search strategy. Isoperla grammatica was rarely active during the day, most active at dusk and dawn when prey capture was highest, using a search strategy, and less active for the rest of the night. Perlodes microcephalus was active during the day, but only below the substratum, and very active from dusk to dawn with a high prey‐capture success, using a search strategy. These experiments provided support for the hypothesis under test. The discussion concludes that the results could also help to explain known differences in growth rate and the length of the life‐cycle in these four species.  相似文献

Summary The lizard genus Cnemidophorus (family Teiidae) contains sexual as well as parthenogenetic species. The theoretical two-fold fitness advantage of asexuality does not translate into any obvious distributional or numerical superiority of the parthenogenic species in the southwestern US and northern Mexico where their ranges overlap. I tested the prediction that the genetically diverse sexual species should have a higher between-individual niche width than a similar sympatric asexual species by studying the prey in stomach contents of sympatric and allopatric populations of C. tigris (sexual) and C. sonorae (asexual) in southern Arizona. The expectation proved true for niche breadths based on both prey length and prey taxa categories. The within-individual component of niche breadth was not different between species. Meaningful comparisons between species in sympatry and allopatry are confounded by the uncontrolled differences in the availability and diversity of food items between sites. Before the generality of these results can be assessed the study should be repeated in other areas where sexual and asexual species are syntopic and of similar body size.  相似文献

This study examines the niche and diet breadth of two closely related sympatric aphidophagous ladybirds: Adalia decempunctata and A. bipunctata. The degree of habitat specialization of these species is investigated, and its effect on life history traits of females is explored. The importance of prey quality in determining the diet breadth is also examined. The niches occupied by these species in three countries, the UK, Belgium and southern France, are similar: A. decempunctata is an arboreal habitat specialist with a narrower set of prey than A. bipunctata, which is commonly found on several types of vegetation. The niches of the two species overlap on trees. Experiments indicate that habitat specialization has resulted in A. decempunctata investing more in each of its offspring than A. bipunctata. A. decempunctata females lay, relative to their body size, heavier eggs than those of the more generalist A. bipunctata, which results in A. decempunctata having bigger larvae. In addition, A. decempunctata larvae are better at surviving starvation than A. bipunctata larvae. In contrast to the expected pattern in food specialization, our study failed to demonstrate a better efficiency of the specialist when fed its usual prey and a detrimental effect when fed on prey that it is unlikely to encounter in the field. The reproductive performance of the specialist ladybird was better when fed an aphid that it was unlikely to regularly feed on in the field. Therefore, the narrow diet of the specialist ladybird is most likely a consequence of it occupying a narrow habitat rather than the quality of the prey. Although further studies on specialization in predatory insects are needed, the results indicate that unlike the role of plant quality in host specialization in herbivorous insects, prey quality has not been the main determinant of ecological specialization in these predatory insects.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Comparisons were made of the functional responses of mature larvae of Perlodes microcephalus, Isoperla grammatica, Dinocras cephalotes and Perla bipunctata. Experiments were performed in stream tanks with natural substrata and glass bottoms, so that feeding could be observed above and below the substratum. There was one stonefly per tank and one of 10 prey densities between 20 and 200 larvae of either Chironomus sp. or Baetis rhodani per tank. Consumed prey were replaced in a first set of experiments but not in a second set. Additional experiments assessed intraspecific interference between larvae of each predator species (two to five predators per tank). 2. The number of prey eaten increased curvilinearly with prey density. The relationship was described by two models, a Type II instantaneous model and its integrated equivalent, for experiments with and without prey replacement, respectively. Handling time did not change significantly with prey density, and was the same for experiments with and without prey replacement. Estimates of attack rate were similar for the two models, but varied between prey type and predator species. Handling time varied considerably but was normally distributed for each prey type and predator species. Mean handling time varied for Chironomus from 39 s for Isoperla, which rarely ate a whole larva, to 57 s for Perlodes and for Baetis from 116 s for Perlodes to 167 s for Perla. All predators were more efficient at capturing Baetis, but the longer handling time for Baetis ensured that more Chironomus were eaten. It was concluded that these variations in attack rate and handling time were related to activity and growth differences between the predator species, and that experiments with and without prey replacement could both be relevant to the field, depending on how the predators searched for food. 3. In the interference experiments, mean handling time did not change with increasing predator density, but attack rate decreased curvilinearly, the decrease varying from negligible for Isoperla to marked for Perlodes. Prey capture decreased with decreasing attack rate. Therefore, interference reduced prey consumption, but this effect was negligible for Isoperla and increasingly severe in the order Dinocras, Perla and Perlodes.  相似文献

  • 1 The feeding behaviour of nymphs of the perlid stonefly Dinocras cephalotes when presented with two different mayfly prey types on different substrates was examined in the laboratory.
  • 2 Most of the evidence suggested that Dinocras cephalotes did not choose between Baetis rhodani and Rhithrogena semicolomta as, under identical circumstances: (i) the survival of both prey types was the same; (ii) the predator's overall searching behaviour was similar in the presence of either mayfly, although B. rhodani was pursued more, especially on complex substrates; (iii) the number of attacks on both prey types was the same; and (iv) the intake of dry weight prey biomass over 24 h remained the same, irrespective of prey species.
  • 3 The predation efficiency (no. of prey captured/no, of encounters) of D. cephalotes decreased with increasing substrate complexity—but only with R. semicolorata as prey, and also when more than one stonefly was present—but only when B. rhodani was the prey. Predator efficiency was greater at low densities of R. semicolorata but highest at a medium density of B. rhodani.
  • 4 Increase in the body weight of D. cephalotes was greater when nymphs were fed a monospecific diet of R. semicolorata compared with one of B. rhodani. This was despite the findings that: (i) nymphs of B. rhodani contained 31.3% more protein (per mg dry body weight) than nymphs of R. semicolorata, whereas the latter contained 81.0% more chitin; and (ii) nymphs of R. semicolorata took 2.7 times as long to consume and almost twice as long to pass through the predator's gut. The longer gut passage time may have allowed a greater assimilation efficiency which may have led to the observed better growth.
  • 5 Dinocras cephalotes is thought to feed opportunistically, with a certain daily food biomass intake as its primary need rather than any specific prey preference. Foraging decisions, or opportunities, affect the fitness of individual nymphs and this may be reflected in the wide size range of contemporary nymphs found in field populations. Variation in foraging efficiency by predators and evasion success by prey, across substrate types, is thought to contribute to the well-known microdistribution patterns of species observed in lotic communities.

It is broadly accepted that the brown skua (Stercorarius antarcticus lonnbergi) competitively excludes the south polar skua (S. maccormicki) from penguin colonies when breeding sympatrically, forcing the latter to feed on marine resources. The purpose of this work was to examine the diets and trophic niche breadths of each species where they co-occur and to determine the degree of overlap. To this end, we analyzed 169 pellets of brown skuas, collected in two different areas (20 individuals), and 152 of south polar skuas, collected in three different areas (18 individuals), on Deception Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, during the austral summer 2000. Pellet analysis often underestimates the amount of easily digestible prey, but allows for comparisons of the relative contributions of different items in the diet. South polar skuas at our study locations consumed seven different food items and had a trophic niche breadth of 0.133 compared to brown skuas that fed on 10 different items and had a trophic niche breadth of 0.078. The niche overlap between the species was 82.1%. Penguins were the principal food source of both species, however, brown skuas fed mostly on chicks, while south polar skuas fed on adults (carcasses). The use of different age classes of penguins as a food source offers an alternative to competitive exclusion, allowing the coexistence of these species on Deception Island.  相似文献

Ontogenetic influences in patterns of niche breadth and feeding overlap were investigated in three species of Siluriformes (Heptapterus sp., Rhamdia quelen and Trichomycterus poikilos) aiming at understanding the species coexistence. Samplings were conducted bimonthly by electrofishing technique from June/2012 to June/2013 in ten streams of the northwestern state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The stomach contents of 1,948 individuals were analyzed by volumetric method, with 59 food items identified. In general Heptapterus sp. consumed a high proportion of Aegla sp., terrestrial plant remains and Megaloptera; R. quelen consumed fish, and Oligochaeta, followed by Aegla sp.; while the diet of T. poikilos was based on Simuliidae, Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera. Specie segregation was observed in the NMDS. Through PERMANOVA analysis feeding differences among species, and between a combination of species plus size classes were observed. IndVal showed which items were indicators of these differences. Niche breadth values were high for all species. The niche breadth values were low only for the larger size of R. quelen and Heptapterus sp. while T. poikilos values were more similar. Overall the species were a low feeding overlap values. The higher frequency of high feeding overlap was observed for interaction between Heptapterus sp. and T. poikilos. The null model confirmed the niche partitioning between the species. The higher frequency of high and intermediate feeding overlap values were reported to smaller size classes. The null model showed resource sharing between the species/size class. Therefore, overall species showed a resource partitioning because of the use of occasional items. However, these species share resources mainly in the early ontogenetic stages until the emphasized change of morphological characteristics leading to trophic niche expansion and the apparent segregation observed.  相似文献

1. A previous study compared the functional responses to their prey and intraspecific interference in mature larvae of Perlodes microcephalus, Isoperla grammatica, Dinocras cephalotes and Perla bipunctata. The present study extends this work by assessing interspecific interference between pairs of these species in equal numbers (one, two or three larvae per species) to provide total predator densities of two, four or six larvae. Baetis larvae as prey were replaced as they were eaten, and their density per predator was varied between 20 and 200 larvae. 2. The number of prey eaten by each competing species increased curvilinearly with prey density, the relationship being well described by a Type II model. Of the two constants in the model, handling time varied considerably between species, mean values being shortest for Perlodes, slightly higher for Isoperla, and much higher for Dinocras and Perla. It was not affected significantly either by predator density or the identity of the competing species. 3. Attack rate also varied between species and decreased with predator density. This decrease was slight for Perlodes, and also for Dinocras and Perla in competition with Isoperla. The decrease in Dinocras and Perla was similar to that for intraspecific interference. 4. The decrease in attack rate was described by a convex curve for Perlodes with the other three species and for Dinocras/Perla with Isoperla, but by a concave curve (negative power function) for Isoperla competing with the other three species, and for both Dinocras and Perla in competition with Perlodes. Prey consumption also decreased with predator density, the severity of competition with different species reflecting that for attack rate. 5. A comparison with previous results for intraspecific interference showed that the latter was dominant for Perlodes in all contests and for Dinocras or Perla competing with Isoperla, whilst interspecific interference dominated for Isoperla in all contests and for Dinocras and Perla competing with Perlodes. Both types of interference were applicable to competition between Dinocras and Perla. Isoperla was the least, and Perlodes the most, aggressive of the four species with Dinocras and Perla intermediate.  相似文献

Variation in prey availability can cause changes in species interactions among marine predators. Foraging theory predicts that niche breadth will expand when resources become limited, possibly leading to higher niche overlap among sympatric species; however, a species’ niche can become constrained by interactions with other similar species, resulting in an inability to shift niche breadth or position. In coastal Newfoundland, Capelin Mallotus villosus is the main forage fish species and its availability (i.e. biomass) during the summer has varied considerably following a population collapse in the 1990s. During the summer, non-breeding Great and Sooty Shearwaters Ardenna gravis and A. grisea migrate and aggregate at annually persistent Capelin spawning sites. We used stable isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N) of blood components (plasma, red blood cells) to investigate variation in isotopic niche breadth (95% prediction ellipse areas) and overlap of the two shearwater species during 2014, 2015 and 2016. Capelin availability varied among years, illustrated by lower peak biomass in 2015 (0.126 g/m²) and 2016 (0.027 g/m²) relative to 2014 (0.254 g/m²). The isotopic niche breadth (plasma) of both shearwater species expanded similarly from 2014 (0.65–0.66‰²) to 2015 (2.22–2.57‰²) and 2016 (1.15–1.42‰²), suggesting the incorporation of alternative prey types into their diet during years of lower prey availability. Isotopic niche overlap between Great and Sooty Shearwaters remained high across years (44–63%), however, providing little evidence for dietary niche partitioning during years of lower prey availability. Findings suggest that both shearwater species are flexible foragers and can modify their diet during the non-breeding season to accommodate fluctuations in prey availability.  相似文献

Prey switching in four species of carnivorous stoneflies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Previous studies compared the functional responses to their prey, and both intraspecific and interspecific interference, in mature larvae of Dinocras cephalotes, Perla bipunctata, Isoperla grammatica and Perlodes microcephalus. The present study examines switching by larvae of the same species presented with different proportions of two contrasting prey types; larvae of Baetis rhodani and Chironomus sp. In each experiment, 200 prey were arranged in nine different combinations of the two prey types (20 : 180, 40 : 160, 60 : 140, 80 : 120, 100 : 100, 120 : 80, 140 : 60, 160 : 40, 180 : 20). Prey were replaced as they were eaten. A model predicted the functional response in the absence of switching and provided a null hypothesis against which any tendency for switching could be tested. 2. No evidence for prey switching by Dinocras and Perla was obtained, both species showing a slight preference for Baetis over Chironomus. Prey switching occurred in Isoperla and Perlodes. As the relative abundance of one prey type increased in relation to the alternative, the proportion eaten of the former prey changed from less to more than expected from its availability, the relationship being described by an S‐shaped curve. Isoperla and Perlodes switched to a preference for Baetis when its percentage of the total available prey exceeded 57 and 42%, respectively. Equivalent values for Chironomus were 43 and 58% for Isoperla and Perlodes, respectively. Switching was strongest in Perlodes. 3. Non‐switching in Dinocras and Perla was related to their feeding strategy, both species being more successful when using a non‐selective ambush strategy at dusk and dawn rather than a search strategy during the night. Both Isoperla and Perlodes used a search strategy. The smaller Isoperla fed chiefly at dusk and dawn, and preferred Chironomus larvae, whereas most of the larger Perlodes fed continuously from dusk to dawn and preferred Baetis larvae.  相似文献

Leptodactylus ocellatus (LO) and L. labyrinthicus (LL) are known to prey on other frogs. Here we compare their food habits based on the analysis of stomach contents and their spatial distribution when in sympatry. LO was found most frequently near stream banks, and LL on the margins of lakes and ponds. LO was found within 10 m of permanent water bodies; LL frequently used ponds far from lakes and rivers. Coleoptera, Formicidae, and Isoptera comprised 52% of the prey types identified in the LO sample, whereas Coleoptera and insect larvae represented 58% of the prey items of LL. Frogs were not frequent in the diet of either species but, in volume, represented the second most important category for LO and the first for LL. LO showed a larger trophic niche breadth than LL. The trophic niche overlap between the two species was 68.3% for percentage of prey items. The present work confirms the relative importance of frogs in the diet of both species. The greater capacity of LL in moving far away from permanent water bodies may generate better opportunities for prey selection and a narrower trophic niche breadth. The large range of prey used by these two species indicates they are generalist/opportunistic feeders.  相似文献

Large carnivore community structure is affected by direct and indirect interactions between intra-guild members. Co-existence between different species within a carnivore guild may occur through diet, habitat or temporal partitioning. Since carnivore species are highly dependent on availability and accessibility of prey, diet partitioning is potentially one of the most important mechanisms in allowing carnivores to co-exist. Intra-guild interactions may vary over time as carnivore prey preference and diet overlap can change due to seasonal changes in resource availability. We conducted scat analysis to compare the seasonal changes in prey preference, diet partitioning and niche breadth of four large carnivore species, namely leopard Panthera pardus, spotted hyena Crocuta crocuta, brown hyena Parahyaena brunnea and wild dog Lycaon pictus in central Tuli, Botswana. Large carnivores in central Tuli display a high dietary overlap, with spotted hyena and brown hyena displaying almost complete dietary overlap and the other carnivore species displaying slightly lower but still significant dietary overlap. Dietary niche breadth for both hyena species was high possibly due to their flexible foraging strategies, including scavenging, while leopard and wild dog showed a relatively low niche breadth, suggesting a more specialised diet. High dietary overlap in central Tuli is possibly explained by the high abundance of prey species in the area thereby reducing competition pressure between carnivore species. Our research highlights the need to assess the influence of diet partitioning in structuring large carnivore communities across multiple study sites, by demonstrating that in prey rich environments, the need for diet partitioning by carnivores to avoid competition may be limited.  相似文献

Identifying the mechanisms that structure niche breadth and overlap between species is important for determining how species interact and assessing their functional role in an ecosystem. Without manipulative experiments, assessing the role of foraging ecology and interspecific competition in structuring diet is challenging. Systems with regular pulses of resources act as a natural experiment to investigate the factors that influence the dietary niches of consumers. We used natural pulses of mast‐fruiting of American beech (Fagus grandifolia) to test whether optimal foraging or competition structure the dietary niche breadth and overlap between two congener rodent species (Peromyscus leucopus and P. maniculatus), both of which are generalist consumers. We reconstructed diets seasonally over a 2‐year period using stable isotope analysis (δ13C, δ15N) of hair and of potential dietary items and measured niche dynamics using standard ellipse area calculated within a Bayesian framework. Changes in niche breadth were generally consistent with predictions of optimal foraging theory, with both species consuming more beechnuts (a high‐quality food resource) and having a narrower niche breadth during masting seasons compared to nonmasting seasons when dietary niches expanded and more fungi (a low‐quality food source) were consumed. In contrast, changes in dietary niche overlap were consistent with competition theory, with higher diet overlap during masting seasons than during nonmasting seasons. Overall, dietary niche dynamics were closely tied to beech masting, underscoring that food availability influences competition. Diet plasticity and niche partitioning between the two Peromyscus species may reflect differences in foraging strategies, thereby reducing competition when food availability is low. Such dietary shifts may have important implications for changes in ecosystem function, including the dispersal of fungal spores.  相似文献

The analysis of a local community of forest passerines (13 species) using phylogenetic contrasts shows a correlation between body size of bird species and mean prey size, minimum prey size, maximum prey size and the size range of dietary items. This suggests that larger birds drop small prey taxa from their prey list, because of the difficulty of capturing very small prey, for energetic reasons or because of microhabitat usage. We find some support for the third hypothesis. Dietary niche breadth calculated across prey taxa is not related to body size. Dietary niche breadth, however, is correlated with size-corrected measurements of the bill and locomotor apparatus. Long and slender bills increase the dietary niche breadth. Thus subtle differences constrain foraging and the techniques of extracting certain prey taxa form crevices. Dietary niche breadth and foraging diversity are positively correlated with population density: at least locally dietary generalists occur at higher breeding densities than specialists.  相似文献

During the breeding season northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) congregate on the Pribilof Islands in large numbers creating the potential for intraspecific competition. Due to the declining trend in the Pribilof Islands population of fur seals, it is important to understand how prey resources are partitioned among the population. Fur seals exhibit a high degree of sexual dimorphism resulting in energetic differences among age and sex classes. Therefore, we hypothesized that subadult male and adult female fur seals would differ in the type and size of prey consumed. We examined the diets of subadult male (age 2–8; mean mass 28–176 kg) and adult female (age ≥ 3 yr; mean mass 13–50 kg) seals on St. Paul Island from 1992 to 2000. Prey remains found in fecal samples were compared using niche overlap indices. There was nearly complete dietary niche overlap between subadult male and adult female fur seals. Walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.), Pacific herring (Clupeia pallasi), and cephalopods were common prey items found in the diets of both groups. We found differences in the size of pollock consumed and that geographic location of sample collection may be important in determining diet differences. Our results indicate high levels of dietary overlap among subadult male and adult female fur seals.  相似文献

The functional characteristics of prey items (such as hardness and evasiveness) have been linked with cranial morphology and performance in vertebrates. In lizards particularly, species with more robust crania generally feed on harder prey items and possess a greater bite force, whereas those that prey on evasive prey typically have longer snouts. However, the link between dietary niche breadth, morphology, and performance has not been explicitly investigated in lizards. The southern African genus Nucras was used to investigate this link because the species exhibit differing niche breadth values and dietary compositions. A phylogeny for the genus was established using mitochondrial and nuclear markers, and morphological clusters were identified. Dietary data of five Nucras species, as reported previously, were used in correlation analyses between cranial shape (quantified using geometric morphometrics) and dietary niche breadth, and the proportion of hard prey taken and bite force capacity. Dietary niche breadth and the proportion of hard prey eaten were significantly related to cranial shape, although not once phylogeny was accounted for using a phylogenetic generalized least squares regression. The proportion of evasive prey eaten was a significant predictor of forelimb length when phylogeny was taken into account. We conclude that, in Nucras, the percentage of evasive prey taken co‐evolves with forelimb morphology, and dietary niche breadth co‐evolves with cranial shape. However, although head width is correlated with the proportion of hard prey eaten, this appears to be the result of shared ancestry rather than adaptive evolution. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 110 , 674–688.

Summary The trophic ecology of eleven predator species (Falconiforms: Buteo polyosoma, Elanus leucurus, Falco sparverius, Geranoaetus melanoleucus, Parabuteo unicinctus; Strigiforms: Athene cunicularia, Bubo virginianus, Tyto alba; Carnivores: Dusicyon culpaeus; Snakes: Philodryas chamissonis, Tachymenis peruviana) in two nearby localities of central Chile is analyzed. The localities exhibit the typical climate (hot-dry summers, coldrainy winters), and vegetation (chaparral), of mediterranean ecosystems. Densities of the staple prey (small mammals) were estimated by seasonal trapping during two years in both open and dense patches of chaparral. The trophic parameters examined are: 1) proportion of diurnal, crepuscular, or nocturnal prey found in the predators' diet; 2) relationship between abundance of different mammalian prey in the predators' diet, and in both open and densely vegetated habitat patches; 3) mean weight and variance of weight of small mammal prey consumed; 4) average weight of the predators; 5) food-niche breadth of the predators; 6) relationship between average weight of predators and mean weight of mammalian prey taken, its variance, and food-niche breadth; 7) overlap in food-niche between all the predator species; 8) guild packing of the predators. Parameters 1) and 2) are used to assess the importance of temporal and habitat segregation of the predators, respectively; parameters 3), 4), 5), and 6) provide information on the possibilities of partitioning the prey resources among the predators; parameters 1), 2), 7) and 8) are used to investigate the organization of the community in terms of guilds.Three niche dimensions seem to be important in determining the structure of the predator community: 1) hunting activity period (diurno-crepuscular, nocturno-crepuscular), 2) hunting habitat (open, or both open and dense patches), and 3) mean prey size taken. Segregation along these three axes results in generally low food niche overlaps (<54% in 47 of the 55 pairwise comparisons) among the predators, but it is not possible to determine whether this was produced by competitive interactions or stochastic differences. Three guilds (niche overlap >90% in pair-wise comparisons) can be recognized: a) the carnivorous-insectivorous guild formed by the diurnal raptors A. cunicularia and F. sparverius, which tend to hunt in open habitat patches; b) the herpetophagous guild formed by the diurnal snakes P. chamissonis and T. peruviana, which presumably hunt in open habitat patches; c) the carnivorous guild (highly specialized in the capture of two rodent species) formed by the diurnal raptors B. polyosoma, G. melanoleucus, P. unicinctus, and the carnivore D. culpaeus, which hunt in open habitat patches. The diurnal raptor E. leucurus is not clearly associated with any guild, and the only two nocturnal raptors in the community (B. virginianus and T. alba) exhibit marked differences in their trophic ecology.  相似文献

Patterns of food resource utilisation by Valencia toothcarp were studied in a small coastal lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula, its most northern population. Emphasis was placed on feeding activity, diet composition, seasonal and intraspecific variation in diet and feeding strategy. Important features of the overall feeding pattern of the Valencia toothcarp are decreased feeding activity during winter, concentration on benthic invertebrates and narrow dietary breadth, with a focus on gammarid amphipods. The feeding of V. hispanica was independent of seasonal variation in food availability, because its main prey were much the same throughout the year. There were no differences in seasonal niche width and niche overlap between seasons was high. There are also no differences in diets between sexes, although diet composition, niche width and niche overlap differ between juvenile and adult fish. The Valencia toothcarp population from Santes Creus lagoon was formed by specialist individuals, with narrow niche widths, that fed on four preferential prey types, but also consumed some occasional prey.  相似文献
