The food habits of the silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen 1788), in Kuwait waters were investigated by examining the stomach contents of 738 specimens collected from May 1996 to April 1997. Their diet consisted of a broad spectrum of food types, but Crustacea were dominant, with copepods and their eggs constituting 39 % other non-copepod Crustacea constituted 16 %. The next major food group was Bacillariophyta (21 %), followed by Mollusca (11 %), fish scales (10 %) and, finally, fish eggs and larvae (3 %). In summer the species fed on a wider variety of food items than in winter. Copepods, other non-copepod crustaceans, and molluscs tended to occur in the stomachs in higher frequencies with an increase in P. argenteus size (up to 18.5–20.4 cm), while the bacillariophytes tended to increase in stomachs at fish sizes between 22.5–24.5 cm. Analysis of monthly variations in stomach fullness indicated that feeding intensity fluctuated throughout the year, with a low during August and September, corresponding to the spawning period.  相似文献

A total of 1436 specimens were examined in the study of the food habits of the three Chrysichthys species in Lekki Lagoon. Certain differences were found in their food habits. Chrysichthys walkeri fed mostly on insects, Chrysichthys filamentosus on crustaceans and Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus on molluscs. It is suggested the observed diversity in feeding habits might be due to an active response to interspecific competition.  相似文献

One-year old hatchery-produced chinook salmon were released into landlocked Lake Purrumbete, Victoria, in 1976 and specimens were recaptured at three-monthly intervals during the next two years. Examination of their stomach contents revealed that fish, particularly Galaxias maculatus , formed the bulk of the food of the salmon. Other items eaten included Amphipoda, Cladocera, Ostracoda and Decapoda (Crustacea), Odonata, Coleoptera, Diptera, Trichoptera and Hemiptera (Insecta) and Gastropoda (Mollusca). At the end of their first three months in the lake the salmon had increased 85% in length and over 670% in weight. After two years in the lake, their length was 582 mm and their weight was 2.73 kg. Growth rate was lowest in spring when the relative amount of fish in the stomach contents was at its lowest and there was a greater diversity of food types in the dict.  相似文献

Freshwater decapod crustaceans are important components of food webs in these environments, but little is known about the diet of species that live in tropical waters. We studied the feeding ecology of the prawn Pseudopalaemon bouvieri and its population structure in two different areas with six lagoons, with a different composition and abundance of aquatic macrophytes. At each site of macrophytes banks, 18 prawns sample was collected with a hand net (1mm mesh size) from 1m2. In the laboratory, prawns cephalothorax length was measured, sex determined, and a total of 208 stomachs were examined for food items. Our results showed that the population abundance varied between 10 ind/m2 and 1 411 ind/m2. The cephalothorax length ranged between 6mm and 21mm, and the male:female ratio varied between 0.3 and 1.0, with a higher proportion of ovigerous females (21%) in area one than area two. P. bouvieri is omnivorous, and its diet was principally based on algae, plant remains, Protozoa, Rotifera, Oligochaeta, Crustacea, Insecta, detritus and other items. The analysis of the stomach content did not reveal any significant difference in the diet between juveniles and adults, and males and females of both areas consumed a similar diet (Kruskal-Wallis test p=0.8273). We concluded that the dietary items consumed by prawns and the niche breadth were similar between the two areas, although the proportion of items consumed varied between lagoons of both areas. The feeding habits of the horse mackerel, Trachurus trachurus, from the central Adriatic Sea were investigated with respect to fish size and season. Stomach contents of 1200 specimens 12.9–37.6 cm total length (TL) taken at monthly intervals (January–December 1995) were analyzed. Of the total number of stomachs examined, 597 were empty (49.7%). This percentage varied significantly with season; the maximum number of empty stomachs was observed during January (80%) and February (82%) and a minimum number observed during July (15%) and August (19%). A total of 30 different prey species belonging to five major groups: Crustacea (Euphausiacea, Mysidacea, Decapoda), Cephalopoda, and Teleostei was identified in the stomach contents. Euphausiids were the most important ingested prey in all seasons as well as in small‐ and medium‐size classes (<28 cm TL). Two species of euphausiids, Nyctiphanes couchii (%IRI = 36.0) and Euphausia krohni (%IRI = 12.9), were the most frequent prey. The proportion of teleosts in stomach contents increased with the increasing size class of horse mackerel and was 15.5% IRI in >30 cm TL individuals. The mean weight of stomach contents increased significantly for fish larger than 24.1 cm TL, while the mean number of prey items significantly declined in the large‐size classes.  相似文献

Annual rings on the first dorsal spine were used to determine the age and growth of the catfish, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Lacépède), in the Lagos Lagoon, Nigeria. From back-calculations, it was found that the mean total length ofthe species when the first annulus was formed was 18.5 cm, 32.6 cm for second annulus, 43.5 cm for the third annulus and 53.9 cm for the fourth annulus. It was shown that this species in the Lagos Lagoon attained four years of age and that the fastest growth in length was achieved during the first year of life. Thereafter, increase in length gradually decreased with age. The relationship between the body length and dorsal spine radius was shown to be linear and highly correlated.  相似文献

Dietary habits and trophic‐guild structure were examined in a fish assemblage (47 species) of the Chesapeake Bay estuary, U.S.A., using 10 years of data from >25 000 fish stomachs. The assemblage was comprised of 10 statistically significant trophic guilds that were principally differentiated by the relative amounts of Mysida, Bivalvia, Polychaeta, Teleostei and other Crustacea in the diets. These guilds were broadly aggregated into five trophic categories: piscivores, zooplanktivores, benthivores, crustacivores and miscellaneous consumers. Food web structure was largely dictated by gradients in habitat (benthic to pelagic) and prey size. Size classes within piscivorous species were more likely to be classified into different guilds, reflecting stronger dietary changes through ontogeny relative to benthivores and other guilds. Relative to predator species and predator size, the month of sampling had negligible effects on dietary differences within the assemblage. A majority of sampled fishes derived most of their nutrition from non‐pelagic prey sources, suggesting a strong coupling of fish production to benthic and demersal food resources. Mysida (predominantly the opossum shrimp Neomysis americana) contributed substantially to the diets of over 25% of the sampled predator groups, indicating that this species is a critical, but underappreciated, node in the Chesapeake Bay food web.  相似文献

Diet composition and prey selection of pike (Esox lucius) were studied in Çivril Lake, Turkey. The lake is eutrophic in character with a surface area of ca. 64 km?2 and mean depth of 3 m. Stomach contents of 409 specimens were collected between October 2003 and April 2005. Pike diet included 10 prey fish species, two Crustaceae, four Insecta, one Hirudinae and one Amphibia. Feeding was homogeneous, with most pike specializing in prey fish and a few pike specializing on miscellaneous items. Feeding activity varied by season and ontogeny. Stomach fullness and the percentage of fish with prey were highest in spring and in small pike, while feeding intensity was lowest in winter and in large sized pike. Diet composition was dominated by fish, including Carasius gibelio, Chondrostoma meandrense, Esox lucius, Gambusia affinis, Gobio gobio, Hemigrammocapoeta kemali, Leuciscus cephalus, and Tinca tinca. Crustacea were also a significant component in spring and in small sized pike. The most important prey items were C. meandrense, Gammarus sp., H. kemali, and L. cephalus. Pike feeding in winter and summer was homogeneous, specializing mainly on fish as prey, while the diet in spring and autumn was heterogeneous with some pike specializing on Gammarus sp. Cannibalism at 8.7% was observed only in the large sized pike (>40 cm). Pike strongly preferred C. meandrense (Selectivity index V = 0.372; χ2 = 27.739; P < 0.01), G. gobio (V = 0.192; χ2 = 7.350; P < 0.01) and T. tinca (V = 0.146; χ2 = 4.257; P < 0.05) despite their low abundance in the lake. Hemigrammocapoeta kemali was the most abundant prey fish in the environment; however, it was a negatively selected food item (V = ?0.358; χ2 = 25.642; P < 0.01). Cyprinus carpio also inhabits the lake, but was not preferred by pike (V = ?0.056; χ2 = 0.625; P > 0.05).  相似文献

The ontogenetic and seasonal feeding habits of 489 individuals of Diplodus annularis L. in Zostera sp. beds were studied using frequency of occurrence, numeric percentage, percentage by weight and an index of relative importance (IRI). The Schoener overlap index was used to compare diets by fish size and seasons. Diet composition including 18 different prey taxa was evidently heterogenous among annular seabream size groups, with no significant dietary overlap. In relation to body size, juveniles were omnivorous and preferred algae and plants, while adults were omnivorous and preferred animals. Principal prey items by decreasing importance were Chlorophyta (dominant taxa Cladophora sp. and Enteromorpha flexuosa), Decapoda (dominant species Upogebia pusilla), Gastropoda (important species Rissoa ventricosa and Alvania sp.), Bivalvia and Spermatophyta, as well as other food items (mostly unidentified Crustacea and fish eggs). To assess the feeding habits of plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L., and dab, Limanda limanda (L.), within Carmarthen Bay, three sampling techniques were used: benthic trawling and surf-zone push-netting were undertaken during the feeding season for the gut contents of plaice and dab (age groups 0-IV) and of 0-group brill, Scophthalmus rhombus , to be analysed in detail, and a benthic macro-fauna grab survey covered the trawled ground to assess the distribution of food species in relation to gut contents. Plaice consumed commonly-occurring food species whereas dab took any available food. The main items were the same for both species, but secondary food preferences differed. Variations in gut contents within species, for the same sized fish, chiefly resulted from the spatial distribution of fish and not seasonal variations in the benthic macro-fauna. The length and not the age of fish primarily determined the selection of food organisms.  相似文献

Synopsis The food and feeding habits of Clarias mossambicus in four habitat types in the northern Lake Victoria basin were studied. The importance of certain food types to this species varies from area to area. In the lake, rivers and swamps, C. mossambicus fed mainly on fish, particularly Haplochromis species. In the sewage ponds, Crustacea and insects were the main food items. The extent of ingestion by C. mossambicus of a given food type presumably reflects the availability and abundance of the food in the habitat. This constitutes a shift in the food habits which is of vital importance in this migratory fish. Synopsis The relationships between food availability, consumption and growth were analyzed from the onset of feeding to an age of 90 days in three cyprinid species. Fish were held at 20 ± 0.5° C and given two (three) constant rations of approximately 30, (40) or 100% dry body weight (dbw) ind-1 day-1. Food consisted of living zooplankton, the size of which correlated with fish size. At high food densities consumption rates decreased rapidly with fish size in all three species. At reduced rations, fish consumed most of the food offered until they were larger than 10 mg dbw. In all species and at each feeding level daily rations consumed increased allometrically with body size. Respiration rate, expressed as routine metabolic rate differed insignificantly between the three species. At high ration levels, growth rates of small bleak, Alburnus alburnus, were distinctly lower than those of roach, Rutilus rutilus, and blue bream, Abramis ballerus. At low food supply all three species grew at similar rates. Assimilation efficiency at low food conditions was approximately twice that of the well-fed groups. If the caloric equivalents of oxygen consumption as measured in well-fed fish are applied to fish fed at low rations their energy budgets do not balance. This indicates the limitations of fish larvae in the partitioning of energy for growth or activity at such conditions.  相似文献

The feeding habits of the megrim, Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis , from the central Adriatic Sea were investigated with respect to fish size and seasons. Stomach contents of 510 specimens, 9.0–28.9 cm total length (TL), collected by bottom-trawl from 2004 to 2006 were analyzed. The percentage of 97 empty stomachs varied significantly with season (maximum during the winter, 32.1%; minimum during summer, 7.4%). The food composition suggests that the megrim is a carnivorous fish. Prey items identified in the stomachs belong to four major groups: Teleostei, Decapoda, Mysidacea and Cephalopoda. Teleosts were the most important (%IRI = 82.2), especially in fish larger than 14 cm TL. Mysidacea constituted the main prey for fish less than 14 cm TL. At the species level, the teleost Antonogadus megalokynodon (%IRI = 1.5) and decapod Processa canaliculata (%IRI = 0.9) were the most frequent prey. The mean weight of stomach contents increased significantly for fish larger than 14 cm TL, while the mean number of prey items did not differ significantly among size classes. Diet composition showed little seasonal variation; teleosts were the most important prey in all seasons, especially during spring. The lowest intensity of feeding recorded in winter could be related to the lower sea temperature and to the spawning period.  相似文献

The food and feeding of the whiting ( Merlangius merlangus ) of the inshore waters and sea lochs of the west of Scotland were studied from 1969–1973. Fish and Crustacea were the main food items and their occurrence in the stomachs was clearly related to the size of the whiting and also to their seasonal abundance. The diurnal changes in feeding were also investigated and the results indicated that the size of fish was again an important factor which could affect the interpretation of the seasonal data.  相似文献

2004年12月至2005年3月在北京十渡地区的二渡和涞水县野三坡两地采用目标取样法对越冬期黑鹳(Ciconia nigra)的取食行为进行了观察。每星期观察一次,累计观察246 h。黑鹳觅食处水深5~40 cm左右,以鱼类和螺类为食,其中鱼类占90%以上;平均每小时进食20次左右,黑鹳在两个研究地点取食的食物没有差别(P=0.439>0.05)。黑鹳取食长度小于4 cm的鱼类最多,占取食总次数的65.0%。成体和亚成体对不同大小鱼类的取食比例无差异(小于4 cm的鱼类,P=0.513>0.05;5~8 cm,P=0.979>0.05;≥9 cm,P=0.657>0.05)。在成体与亚成体对不同体型鱼类的搜寻时间中,成体搜寻较小食物的时间短于亚成体(P=0.008<0.05)。对食物的处理时间随着鱼类大小递增而延长,亚成体在处理较小食物上花费的时间相对较长(小于4 cm的鱼P=0.002<0.05;5~8cm的鱼P=0.001<0.05),表明亚成体的取食经验不足。保护越冬期黑鹳的最佳对策是减少对其取食活动和取食地的人为干扰。  相似文献

The feeding ecology ofChrysichthys, a commercially important freshwater bagrid in Nigeria, is described from a southeastern lake. Over a year period, 779 stomachs were examined. The main food items were chaoborid and chironomid larvae, ostracods, copepods and detritus. Larger fish fed mostly on insect larvae and detritus while the smaller individuals consumed mostly microcrustacea. Feeding intensity was lowest during the height of the flood. There was little diel change in the amount of food consumed. The fish are morphologically pre-adapted for their benthic omnivorous feeding habits.  相似文献

In this paper we describe the feeding habits of the Red snapper (Lutjanus peru) in the southern coast of Guerrero state, Mexico. This data could be relevant to local fisheries management. In total 385 full stomachs (206 from females and 179 from males) were collected monthly in 1993 and 1994, from commercial catches. Stomach contents were identified to species level when possible. Food items were grouped into taxonomically coherent groups, and their numbers, weight and frequency of occurrence obtained. The index of relative importance (IRI) was calculated for the total sample, by month, sex and size class. In 1993, a total of 42 different food items were obtained, and 43 in 1994. Food items consisted of fishes, crustaceans, and mollusks. The grouping of prey species, genera, or families rendered 14 food groups, as follows: Mollusks, Amphipods, Copepods, Stomatopods, Penaeus vannamei, Brachiuran Larvae, Stomatopods Larvae, Family Albuneidae Larvae, Other crustaceans, Anchoa ischana, Anchoa lucida, Other fishes, Salps and Unidentified organic matter. Anchoa ischana dominated the trophic spectrum in both years. Although, Amphipods, Anchoa lucida and Other fishes had important indexes in 1994. There was high variability in the diet composition by month. Nevertheless, in 1993, from February to August, crustaceans as a whole dominated the diet. In 1994, crustaceans only dominated in March and August. No differences in food habits were found between immature fish, males and females. The diet of the Red snapper varies as they grow, although the same food groups are found always. At the adult phase, in length classes over 261 mm FL, there is some degree of specialization, as they consume more fish, particularly engraulids.  相似文献

Food intake, growth and food conversion of young, O-group herring were studied at two temperatures and feeding regimes over a period of 19 weeks. The food intake of fish fed to satiation twice daily showed considerable variation. Food intake per fish at 14.5° C was about three times that at 6.5° C, and was generally much higher than in most other species of fish studied. The mean increase in wet weight over the 19-week period was 0.581 g/week at 14.5° C and 0.236 g/week at 6.5° C in fish fed to satiation and 0.094 g/week at 6.2° C and a ration of 1.3% of the body weight. Growth depensation was found to occur even in fish fed to satiation. The changes in specific growth rate, that is the percentage increase in weight/day, showed similar trends at different temperatures and food regimes. The mean conversion efficiency of fish on a ration of 1.3% at 6.2° C was higher than that of fish fed until satiation, at 14.5 and 6.5° C. The conversion efficiency of fish fed to satiation at 14.5° C showed a distinct decrease with increasing weight while at 6.5° C such a clear trend was not observed. In general, the conversion efficiency of young herring were found to be much lower than that of most other species studied. The weight exponent of the quantitative relationship between food intake and body weight at 14.5° C was 0.744. The total metabolic expenditure at 14.5° C, calculated using Winberg's (1956) 'utilization coefficient, gave a weight exponent of 0.773.  相似文献

Species in Liangzi Lake were clustered into four trophic groups: Hemiramphus kurumeus and Hemiculter bleekeri bleekeri fed predominantly on terrestrial insects; Carassius auratus auratus and Abbottina rivularis on non-animal food; Hypseleotris swinhonis, Ctenogobius giurinus, Pseudorasbora parva and Toxabramis swinhonis on cladocerans or copepods; Culterichthys erythropterus on decapod shrimps. Gut length, mouth width, mouth height, gill raker length and gill raker spacing, varied widely among species. With the exception of three species pairs ( H. swinhonis, C. giurinus; C. erythropterus, H. kurumeus; T. swinhonis, H. bleekeri bleekeri ), principal components analysis of morphological variables revealed over-dispersion of species. Canonical correspondence analysis of dietary and morphological data revealed five significant dietary-morphological correlations. The first three roots explained > 85% of the total variance. The first root reflected mainly the relationship of gut length to non-animal food, with an increase in gut length associated with an increase in non-animal food. The second root was influenced strongly by the relationship of the gill raker spacing to consumption of copepods, with an increase in gill raker spacing associated positively with copepods in the diet. The third root was influenced by the relationship of mouth gape to consumption of fish and decapod shrimps, with an increase in mouth gape associated with more fish and decapod shrimps in the diet. These significant dietary-morphological relationships supported the eco-morphological hypotheses that fish morphology influence food use, and morphological variation is important in determining ecological segregation of co-existing fish species.  相似文献

Summary The food of 163 juvenile specimens of 13 species of notothenioid fishes collected in the southern Weddell Sea (Antarctica) was analyzed. Investigated fish size range was 3–13 cm SL. Principal food items were calanoid copepods Metridia gerlachei, Calanoides acutus, and Calanus propinquus; all developmental stages of Euphausia crystallorophias, and post-larval nototheniid fish Pleuragramma antarcticum. Diet of juvenile channichthyids is limited to few species of euphausiids and fish in the size > 10 mm, but does not include significant numbers of copepods. Pelagic stages of nototheniids feed on copepods and/or larval euphausiids smaller than 10 mm. At similar size, nototheniids and bathydraconids take smaller prey items than channichthyids.  相似文献
