Dioecy in Fitzroya cupressoides (Molina) I.M. Johnst. and Pilgerodendron uviferum (D. Don.) Florin (Cupressaceae)

The aim of this study was to determine the dioecious or monoecious condition of Fitzroya cupressoides and Pilgerodendron uviferum. The study area lies west of the Nahuel Huapi National Park in northern Patagonia (Argentina), where these species form mixed stands. One hundred individuals of each species were studied over three successive years. The nature and position in the crown of their reproductive organs were recorded. Results showed that both species are dioecious. This feature has been confirmed on trees of these species growing in other sites within their natural distribution area in Argentina and Chile.     

Acrochaetium botryocarpum (Harv.) J. Ag. (Rhodophyta) in Southern Australia

The morphology, ecology, cytology and systematics of Acrochaetium botryocarpum (Harv.) J. Ag. have been studied. This species occurs throughout the year in southern Australia and grows on a variety of hosts. The variable appearance of the prostrate system results from the effect of the substratum upon its morphology. Plants reach a height of 6 mm; cells of the erect filaments contain a single chromoplast with a variable number of pyrenoids. Tetrasporangial plants occur mainly in winter and sexual plants occur mainly in spring and early summer; the two generations are isomorphic. Stages of fertilisation have been observed and photographed. Acrochaetium polyrhizum (Harv.) J. Ag. is referred to the synonomy of A. botryocarpum, and A. codicolum Brg., A. grande (Levr.) De Toni fil. and A. rhizoideum (Drew) Sm. are regarded as probable synonyms. This study of A. botryocarpum indicates that host specificity, substrate relations, form of spermatangia and immediate post-fertilisation activity may not be as reliable as formerly thought for making taxonomic distinctions within the Acrochaetium-Rhodochorton complex.     

Mastophoropsis canaliculata (Harvey in Hooker) gen. et comb. nov. (Corallinaceae,Rhodophyta) in Southern Australia

Mastophoropsis canaliculata (Harvey in Hooker) gen. et comb. nov. (Corallinaceae, Rhodophyta) is restricted to south-eastern Australian waters. It is unique among Corallinaceae in possessing an erect, tenacular, branched, taeniform, non-geniculate thallus which produces multiporate tetrasporangial conceptacles. Based on a detailed morphological and anatomical study, including an examination of the designated lectotype, this taxon is referred to the tribe Phymatolitheae in the subfamily Melobesioideae and its relationships to other non-geniculate Corallinaceae are discussed. A simplified microtechnique procedure involving decalcification with nitric acid, resin embedding and staining serially mounted sections with KMnO₄ also is outlined. X-ray microanalysis of surface tissues indicates that calcification occurs largely as CaCO₃ and that various structures contain substantially differing amounts of Ca.     

Carotenoids in fish. XXIV. Sardina pilchardus Walb. (Clupeidae)

The author investigated the presence of various carotenoids in Sardina pilchardus Walb. from the coast of Southern Europe.The presence of the following carotenoids has been stated: -carotene, -carotene epoxide, -cryptoxanthin, canthaxanthin, lutein epoxide, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin (free and ester form) and mutatochrome. The dominant carotenoid in all the parts of the body was astaxanthin, especially its ester form. The total content of carotenoid ranged from 10.537 (skin and muscles) to 116.309 µg/g fresh weight (liver).     

Occurrence of Kudoa sp. (Myxozoa) in Trachurus trachurus L. (osteichthyes) in Portugal

Specimens of Trachurus trachurus L., obtained monthly in a fish market of Oporto from October 1998 to August 1999, were examined for the presence of Kudoa in the muscle. Kudoa sp. spores were found in 84.7% of the specimens (n = 209). The prevalence was not significantly different between seasons and was not related to the host's length. The infection does not seem to have negative effects on the fish quality once no macroscopic pseudocysts or myoliquefaction were detected.     

Carotenoids in fish. XXVI. Pungitius pungitius (L.) and Gasterosteus aculeatus L. (Gasterosteidae)

The author investigated the presence of various carotenoids in the different parts of the body of Pungitius pungitius (L.) and Gasterosteus aculeatus L. by means of columnar and thin-layer chromatography. The investigations revealed the presence of the following carotenoids:

in Pungitius pungitius. α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, mutatochrome, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin;

in Gasterosteus aculeatus: β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, β-carotene epoxide, neothxanthin, canthaxanthin, mutatochrome, lutein, phoenicoxanthin, zeaxanthin, taraxanthin, tunaxanthin, astaxanthin, astaxanthin ester and α-doradexanthin. The total carotenoid content ranged from 2.229 to 138.504 µg/g wet weight.

Heliconema minnanensis n. sp. (Physalopteroidae: Physalopteridae) and Raphidascaris trichiuri (Yin and Zhang) n. comb. (Ascaridoidea: Anisakidae) in marine fishes.

Heliconema minnanensis n. sp. is described from the Chiloscyllium plagiosum south of the Minnan-Taiwan Bank Fishing Ground, Taiwan Strait. It is characterized by having the following combination of features. There are no longitudinal ridges in the posterior part of the body; the male has 4 pairs of precloacal papillae and 6-7 pairs of postcloacal papillae. The right spicule averages 0.2 mm long (1.1% of body length), and the left spicule averages 1.2 mm long (5.6% of body length), making an average spicule ratio of 1:5.2. The female has a vulva located on the left side of a thick membrane and 56-65% of the body length from the anterior end. Raphidascaris trichiuri (Yin and Zhang, 1983) comb. n., known previously from males only, is transferred from Cloeoascaris and redescribed, including material of both sexes from Muraenesox cinereus from the type locality.     

Paeonia rotundiloba (D. Y. Hong) D. Y. Hong: A new status in tree peonies (Paeoniaceae)

Abstract Paeonia decomposita Hand.‐Mazz. subsp. rotundiloba D. Y. Hong is here raised to the specific rank, P. rotundiloba (D. Y. Hong) D. Y. Hong, based on its distinctiveness of four diagnostic characters: number of carpels; height of disk; number of leaflets of the lower leaves, and shape of the terminal leaflets; and unpublished molecular data. Paeonia rotundiloba differs distinctly from P. decomposita in having carpels mostly 3, less often 2 or 4, very rarely 5 (vs. almost always 5, very occasionally 4 or 3), disk 8–15 mm high (vs. 4–9.6 mm), leaflets mostly 19–39 (vs. 29–63) in number, and ratio of length to width of the terminal leaflets 1.09–1.93 (vs. 1.81–2.99).     

Pseudopollen in Eria Lindl. section Mycaranthes Rchb.f. (Orchidaceae)

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pseudopollen is a whitish, mealy material produced upon the labella of a number of orchid species as labellar hairs either become detached or fragment. Since individual hair cells are rich in protein and starch, it has long been speculated that pseudopollen functions as a reward for visiting insects. Although some 90 years have passed since Beck first described pseudopollen for a small number of Eria spp. currently assigned to section Mycaranthes Rchb.f., we still know little about the character of pseudopollen in this taxon. The use of SEM and histochemistry would re-address this deficit in our knowledge whereas comparison of pseudopollen in Eria (S.E. Asia), Maxillaria (tropical and sub-tropical America), Polystachya (largely tropical Africa and Madagascar) and Dendrobium unicum (Thailand and Laos) would perhaps help us to understand better how this feature may have arisen and evolved on a number of different continents. METHODS: Pseudopollen morphology is described using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Hairs were tested for starch, lipid and protein using IKI, Sudan III and the xanthoproteic test, respectively. KEY RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The labellar hairs of all eight representatives of section Mycaranthes examined are identical. They are unicellular, clavate with a narrow 'stalk' and contain both protein and starch but no detectable lipid droplets. The protein is distributed throughout the cytoplasm and the starch is confined to amyloplasts. The hairs become detached from the labellar surface and bear raised cuticular ridges and flaky deposits that are presumed to be wax. In that they are unicellular and appear to bear wax distally, the labellar hairs are significantly different from those observed for other orchid species. Comparative morphology indicates that they evolved independently in response to pollinator pressures similar to those experienced by other unrelated pseudopollen-forming orchids on other continents.     

Evolutionary tendencies in some annual species of Brotnus (Bromus L. sect. Genea Dum. (Poaceae))

A multidisciplinary investigation of the eight annual taxa of Bromus sect. Genea throughout their total ranges has brought a fresh insight into their evolutionary pathways. These species, mainly in southwest Asia and the Mediterranean, are still actively in the process of speciation and their study illuminates evolutionary processes in annual grasses as a whole. Following a discussion of Genea features, a list of ancestral and derived characters in the group is presented. The recent emergence of a multiplicity of niches is probably the reason for the rapid emergence of many new kinds of plants in sect. Genea.
