Structural organization of the epithelium of the lips and associated structures of the Indian major carp,Catla catla, is described. The upper lip is thin and is associated on its dorsal side with a membranous fold of skin and the rostral cap. In contrast, the lower lip is thick and very conspicuous. It is associated on its ventral side with a fold of skin between it and the ventral head skin. The lower lip is divided into a non-projectile portion, a projectile portion and an intermediate groove region. The projectile portion remains folded covering a part of the ventral head skin when the mouth is closed. Their role in relation to the formation of the characteristic feeding tube is discussed. The epithelium of the lips and associated structures is stratified in nature and is composed of the epithelial cells, mucous cells, club cells, lymphocytes and the taste buds. The mucous cells are small, few or even absent and do not appear to secrete profusely at the surfaces of the upper and the lower lips. This suggests that the lips inCatla catla, which feeds on micro-organisms, do not need extra lubrication for protection against abrasion during feeding. In the epithelium at the folds of skin, the voluminous mucous cells secrete profusely and provide extra lubrication to their surface. This reduces the resistance to surface drag during stretching and enables the jaws to protrude with increasing efficiency and swiftness. The club cells are developed additionally to complement the mucous cells in the rostral cap and the upper lip epithelium. Their primary function appears protective in some way, which needs further confirmation. The taste buds, though few in the lower lip, are located in a good number in the upper lip on the characteristic epithelial papillae-like projections, and are projected at the surface. These have been associated with the acute gustatory sense of the fish. The taste buds are absent on the folds of skin where they may not be of much significance.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted during wet season to evaluate the performance of different fish species for biocontrol of weeds in rainfed waterlogged rice fields with fingerlings of three exotic carps – grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (Val.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes), silver barb, Puntius gonionotus (Bleeker) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) and common carp, Cyprinus carpio (L.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) – and three Indian major carps – rohu, Labeo rohita (Ham.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes), catla, Catla catla (Ham.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes), mrigal, Cirrhinus mrigala (Ham.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes). A total of 13 major weeds under the categories of grassy, sedges, broadleaf and aquatic weeds were observed in the rice fields. Grass carp reduced maximum weed biomass (weed control efficiency [WCE] 63% at 60 days after transplanting [DAT] and 62% at 100 DAT) followed by silver barb and common carp. Among the Indian carps, only rohu was effective in control of weeds (WCE, 23% at 60 DAT). The grain yield of rice (variety Varshadhan) slightly increased (4.2–4.5 t/ha), but straw yield was significantly higher (10.2–10.7 t/ha) under rice-fish farming. Fish yield was significantly higher in exotic carps (270–288 kg/ha/90days) due to higher specific growth rates (1.8–2% body weight/day). The study indicated that exotic carps (grass carp, silver barb and common carp in order) were more effective than Indian carps for control of weed in rainfed lowland rice fields and among the Indian carps, rohu showed potential for weed control.  相似文献

This investigation is aimed to study an impact of habitat degradation on proximate composition and amino acid (AAs) profile of Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala collected from polluted, non-polluted area (upstream) and a commercial fish farm. The amino acid profile was estimated by the amino acid analyzer. C. catla collected from the polluted environment had highest lipid, protein and ash contents (12.04?±?0.01, 13.45?±?0.01 and 0.93?±?0.03%, respectively). The high protein content (14.73?±?0.01 and 14.12?±?0. 01%) was recorded in C. catla procured from non-polluted (upstream) wild habitat of River Chenab and controlled commercial fish farm. Farmed fish species showed comparatively higher moisture contents followed by upstream and polluted area fishes. C. mrigala showed significant differences in amino acid and proximate composition collected from a polluted site of the river Chenab. C. catla collected from non-polluted site of the river showed an excellent nutrient profile, followed by L. rohita (wild and farmed) and C. mrigala (polluted area), respectively. All fishes from the polluted areas of the River Chenab indicated a significant decrease in the concentration of some AAs when compared to farmed and wild (upstream) major carps. Omitting of some important AAs was also observed in the meat of fish harvested from polluted habitat of this river. C. mrigala and L. rohita exhibited a significant increase in the concentration of some of non-essential amino acids such as cysteine in their meat. The results indicated that wild fish (upstream) and farmed fish species had highest protein contents and amino acid profile and hence appeared to be the best for human consumption. The proximate composition and AAs profiles of fish harvested from the polluted area of the river clearly indicated that efforts shall be made for the restoration of habitat to continue the requirement of high quality fish meat at a low cost to the human population.  相似文献

The major Indian carps namely rohu (Labeo rohita), catla (Catla catla), mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) and calbasu (Labeo calbasu) are important freshwater species of the Indian subcontinent constituting over 65% of the fish produce. In the present study, isolation of 12 microsatellite loci from rohu has been reported. Cross‐species amplification in related carps and their implication in population genetic studies as well as selective breeding program were discussed.  相似文献

Non-specific immune responses in juveniles of Indian major carps   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The non‐specific immune parameters are useful to determine the health status of fish and to evaluate the immunomodulatory substances for fish farming as markers of pollution and disease resistance. Some of the important parameters, viz. superoxide production by neutrophils through nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) assay; haemagglutination (HA), haemolysin (HLY) and bacterial agglutination titres; myeloperoxidase (MPO), and lysozyme activities, and alternative complement levels in serum of the juveniles of three Indian major carp species (Cirrhinus mrigala, Catla catla and Labeo rohita) were measured to establish their physiological normal range. A wide variation among the individuals within a species in the ranges of the most of the immune parameters was recorded. Significantly higher levels in the mean values of HA, HLY, bacterial agglutination titres; superoxide production by neutrophils in nitroblue tetrazolium assay; serum MPO and lysozyme activities, i.e. 371.20, 4.60, 18.80, 0.40, 0.62 and 6.55 μg ml?1, respectively, were obtained in L. rohita except a much lower alternative haemolytic complement activity (29.06 units ml?1) compared with the other two species. In most of the parameters, L. rohita showed the highest value, possibly indicating its more natural resistance compared with the other two species.  相似文献

The influence of different culture systems on the amount of plankton consumed by fingerlings of three carp species (Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala) was examined in outdoor culture tanks during a 90 day growing period. The fish were raised under two basically different feeding conditions: (a) fed with allochthonous live plankton; (b) fed with plankton grown autochthonously in the fish growing tanks fertilized with manures. Both feeding regimes were compared with control groups. It was found that the plankton intake for carp held in the live food system was significantly higher than with the manured and control systems. Related to maximum intake, maximum abundance of plankton in the live food system was a consequence of improved water quality expressed in terms of lower values of BOD and COD and higher values of DO and pH; this was conducive to fast reproduction of some of the zooplankton which constituted the major food items for the test carp, as well as to the regular exogenous introduction of live plankton. The ingestion of plankton was found to be related to carp body weight raised to the power b. The exponent b ranged from 0.29 to 0.93 during the 90-day growing period.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships are reported for four Indian carps. The length–weight relationship was W = 0.01123L3.355 for Cirrhinus mrigala, W = 0.07354L3.299 for Catla catla, W = 0.04066L3.313 for Labeo rohita and W = 0.11489L2.732 for Labeo fimbriatus. Although common carp is the major fish species in Asian and European aquaculture and many domestic varieties have occurred, there is a controversy about the origination of European domestic common carp. Some scientists affirmed that the ancestor of European domestic common carp was Danube River wild common carp, but others considered it might be Asian common carp. For elucidating origination of European domestic common carp, we chose two representative European domestic common carp strains (German mirror carp and Russian scattered scaled mirror carp) and one wild common carp strain of Cyprinus carpio carpio subspecies (Volga River wild common carp) and two Asian common carp strains, the Yangtze River wild common carp (Cyprinus carpio haematopterus) and traditionally domestic Xingguo red common carp, as experimental materials. ND5–ND6 and D-loop segments of mitochondrial DNA were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and analyzed through restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and sequencing respectively. The results revealed that HaeIII and DdeI digestion patterns of ND5–ND6 segment and sequences of control region were different between European subspecies C. carpio carpio and Asian subspecies C. carpio haematopterus. Phylogenetic analysis showed that German mirror carp and Russian scattered scaled mirror carp belonged to two subspecies, C. carpio carpio and C. carpio haematopterus, respectively. Therefore, there were different ancestors for domestic carp in Europe: German mirror carp was domesticated from European subspecies C. carpio carpio and Russian scattered scaled mirror carp originated from Asian subspecies C. carpio haematopterus.  相似文献

Direct sequencing of mitochondrial DNA regions such as cytochrome b, ATPase 6/8 and control region was performed to study comparative and evolutionary status of the three mitochondrial genes in Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala. DNA sequence alignment among species using specific software revealed comparative rates of divergence with considerably faster and more heterogeneous substitution rate for control region as compared to cytochrome b and ATPase 6/8. Despite the relatively high variability of control region, the overall levels of sequence divergence were low in coding regions. Two protein coding genes and the control region with varying degree of sequence divergence established two distinct groups which are genetically distant from each other exhibiting identical phylogenetic structure in IMCs. Closest relationship was between Labeo rohita and Catla catla indicating that they might have diverged from a common ancestral stock in genealogical lineage whereas Cirrhinus mrigala showed greater divergence with all the three DNA regions studied. Findings of this study will help to understand evolution of mitochondrial DNA genes in carps and facilitate future investigations on phylogeographic structure of Indian carps.  相似文献

Single-species groups of fry of the planktivorous, filter-feeding carps (silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, bighead carp Aristichthys nobilis, rohu Labeo rohita and catla Catla catla) were exposed to the bacterium Chromobacterium violaceum to assess if they could detect or ingest unattached bacteria. The results indicate that planktivorous carp fry are able to ingest unattached bacteria and that the numbers ingested increase with time and with bacterial concentration in the media, although probably by passive means. It is also suggested that unattached bacteria are of little nutritional significance to carps.  相似文献

A variety of marking and tagging methods were tested on common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) with the aim of identifying suitable methods for genetic studies in this and other species of carp. Elastomer and Alcian blue dye marking; Cold and Silver nitrate branding; Floy, Fingerling, Carlin disc and visible implant tags; and fin clipping were all tested on a range of sizes of common carp (from mean weights of 10–25 g up to 600–800 g). The branding and tagging methods tested did not give satisfactory retention rates. A combination of elastomer marking and fin clipping was then tested as a method for strain identification in a growth comparison trial on catla (Catla catla Hamilton) and found to be satisfactory for this purpose. Passive integrated transponders (PIT) tags were used to individually identify catla of wild or hatchery origin being grown for use as broodstock. These had almost 100% (98.8%) retention rates, but are expensive compared to most other tagging methods.  相似文献

Selectivity of food byLabeo rohita (Ham.) was studied in a stocking pond (Moat), by calculating an Electivity index (E) for each food organism as described byIvlev (1961). It was found thatL. rohita was definitely selective in its feeding. In case of fingerlings, there was a strong selection for zooplanktonic organisms (Arcella andDifflugia among protozoans,Keratella andBrachionus among rotifer andDaphnia andCyclops among crustaceans) and smaller algae (Cosmarium andClosterium among desmisd,Euglena andVolvox among phytoflagellates and algal spores and zygotes) while most of the phytoplanktonic organisms, belonging to green algae, diatoms and blue green algae, were avoided. In case of adults, a strong negative selection was observed for all zooplanktonic organisms and a strong positive selection for most of the green algae and diatoms (Ankistrodesmus, Zygnema, Spirogyra, Selenastrum, Pediastrum, Scenedesmus, Tetraspora, Stephanodiscus, Naviculla, Diatoma, Synedra andNitzchia). However, all blue green algae were avoided.The feeding relationship ofL. rohita with other major carps,Cirrhina mrigala (Ham.) andCatla catla (Ham.) was studied in two different habitats, pond and river. It was observed that in both habitats all three species were found to feed on almost similar types of food organisms, but the quantity of any food item eaten by adults differed markedly from one species to another and the food items which were dominant in one species, were of secondary importancce for the other two species. The adults ofL. rohita were found to feed mainly on phytoplankton and macrovegetation, the main food of adultC. mrigala was decayed organic matter, sand and mud supplimented by plankton, while the food of adultC. catla was chiefly composed of zooplankton, and some phytoplankton. Hence there was no true identity of feeding habits between the adults of any two species. However, there was an indication of competition for food between the fingerlings of all three species, because all of them feed mainly on zooplankton (Crustaceans, rotifers and protozoans). However, such feeding habits lasted a very short time only and as the fishes grew, their feeding habits diverged.  相似文献

Knowledge of genetic variation and population structure of existing strains of both farmed and wild common carp Cyprinus carpio L. is absolutely necessary for any efficient fish management and/or conservation program. To assess genetic diversity in common carp populations, a variety of molecular markers were analyzed. Of those, microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA were most frequently used in the analysis of genetic diversity and genome evolution of common carp. Using microsatellites showed that the genome evolution in common carp exhibited two waves of rearrangements: one whole-genome duplication (12–16 million years ago) and a more recent wave of segmental duplications occurring between 2.3 and 6.8 million years ago. The genome duplication event has resulted in tetraploidy since the common carp currently harbors a substantial portion of duplicated loci in its genome and twice the number of chromosomes (n = 100–104) of most other cyprinid fishes. The variation in domesticated carp populations is significantly less than that in wild populations, which probably arises from the loss of variation due to founder effects and genetic drift. Genetic differentiation between the European carp C.c. carpio and Asian carp C.c. haematopterus is clearly evident. In Asia, two carp subspecies, C.c. haematopterus and C.c. varidivlaceus, seem to be also genetically distinct.  相似文献

Forty‐four primer sequences available for four cyprinid fishes were tested to amplify microsatellite loci in Indian major carp, Cirrhinus mrigala. A total of 12 loci were successfully amplified with clear scorable patterns and five thereof were polymorphic. Suitability of the identified polymorphic loci in population structure analysis of C. mrigala was assessed. Genetic variation was examined in 76 specimens collected from five different rivers. The mean observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.247 to 0.333. Significant heterogeneity in allele frequencies was detected, indicating that the samples analysed did not belong to homogenous populations. The identified microsatellite markers are promising for the analysis of intraspecific divergence in C. mrigala across its distribution range.  相似文献

The explosive Koi herpesvirus (KHV) epidemic has caused the deaths of a large number of carp and carp variants and has produced serious economic losses. The mirror carp (Cyprinus carpio var. specularis) exhibits strong environmental adaptability and its primary cells can be used to isolate KHV. This study utilized the tissue explant method to systematically investigate primary cell culture conditions for mirror carp snout and caudal fin tissues. We demonstrated that cells from these two tissue types had strong adaptability, and when cultured in Medium 199 (M199) containing 20% serum at 26 to 30°C, the cells from the snout and caudal fin tissues exhibited the fastest egress and proliferation. Inoculation of these two cell types with KHV-infected fish kidney tissues produced typical cytopathic effects; additionally, identification by electron microscopy, and PCR indicated that KHV could be isolated from both cell types.  相似文献

Summary Secretory products of granular and mucous cells in the gill epithelium of the carp, Cyprinus carpio, were distinguished by their cytochemical reactions with peroxidase-labelled lectins and with the galactose oxidase (GO)-Schiff reagents. Secretory products of granular cells reacted with lectins from Triticum vulgaris (WGA), Arachis hypogaea (PNA), Dolichos biflorus (DBA), Glycine max (SAB), and Lotus tetragonolobus (LTA). They also reacted with GO-Schiff reagents. After sialic acid cleavage with HCl, new binding sites for DBA and SBA appeared, suggesting the terminal sequence sialic acid-N-acetylgalactosamine (SA-GalNAc) for the secretion of this cell type. In mucous cells, binding sites for WGA, DBA, and SBA and, after acid hydrolysis, binding sites for PNA and a positive GO-Schiff reaction were detected. The terminal trisaccharide sialic acid-galactose (1-3)-N-acetylgalactosamine (SA-Gal-GalNAc) is proposed for the secretion of mucuous cells. These cytochemical differences are discussed in light of the involvement of both cell types in fish mucus elaboration.  相似文献

Tannins are the most abundant among the plant‐derived antinutrients that bind readily with protein and other macromolecules to form indigestible complexes, thereby reducing the nutritional value of the plant feedstuffs. Presence of tannase‐producing gut microbiota in herbivorous animals has been suggested to overcome the antinutritional effects of tannins. However, this topic has been less investigated in herbivorous/omnivorous fish species. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the presence of tannase‐producing autochthonous microbiota in the gastrointestinal (GI) tracts of some culturable freshwater teleosts and to identify most promising tannase‐producing strains by molecular methods. Isolation and enumeration of tannase‐producing autochthonous microbiota have been carried out in the gut of ten culturable freshwater teleosts, namely catla (Catla catla), silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), rohu (Labeo rohita), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), bata (Labeo bata), kalbasu (Labeo calbasu), tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Culturable heterotrophic and tannase‐producing microbial populations evaluated on tryptone soya agar and selective tannic acid agar media, respectively, revealed the maximum in the hindguts of all fish species studied. Out of 72 tannase‐producing colonies, 18 randomly selected isolates were maintained as pure cultures and evaluated quantitatively for tannase production. Among these, four most promising tannase producers were identified by 16S/26S rDNA sequencing following nucleotide blast and deposited in the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) GenBank. The strain LR01 isolated from rohu was a bacterium, Enterobacter asburae (GenBank Accession No. GU939631 ). However, the strains CM02, OM01 and LR03 isolated from mrigal, tilapia and rohu were yeasts and identified as Pichia kudriavzevii (GenBank Accession No. GU939629 ), Candida tropicalis (GenBank Accession No. GU911469 ) and Candida parapsilosis (GenBank Accession No. GU939630 ), respectively. To the authors' knowledge, the present study is the first to report tannase‐producing autochthonous microbiota in the gut of freshwater teleosts. Tannin‐degrading microbiota detected in the present study may endow the fish with some ecological advantages by enabling them to overcome the anti‐nutritional effects of plant tannins.  相似文献

A series of histochemical procedures were employed to localise and characterise glycoprotein (GP) classes produced by the epithelial cells, the type A and the type B mucous goblet cells (MGCs) and the club cells in the epidermis of Labeo rohita. The epithelial cells secreted GPs with oxidizable vicinal diols and GPs with sialic acid residues without O-acyl substitution in low concentrations. The type A MGCs and the type B MGCs, in contrast, produced these GPs in high concentrations. Further, these MGCs produced GPs with O-sulphate esters as well. GPs with O-sulphate esters were produced in high concentration by the type A MGCs and in low concentration by the type B MGCs. The club cells produced GPs with oxidizable vicinal diols in trace amounts. Production of more than one type of GPs suggested a basis for functional discrimination in their role in the mucous secretions at the skin surface. This is considered an adaptation to environment inhabited by the fish and is discussed in relation to their role in lubrication, protection and inhibition of the invasion and proliferation of pathogenic micro-organisms.  相似文献
