Cysts of Artemia spp. collected from February 1997 to February 2000 in the Real de Salinas solar saltworks, Campeche, Mexico, were compared with Artemia franciscana (batch number 8,131 Microfeast Artemia Cysts, Texas, USA). The variables determined in these two populations were: number of cysts per gram, hatching percentage, hatching efficiency, hatching rate, hatching synchrony and hatching biomass, as well as diameter of the cysts and length of the nauplii (instar I). For Salinas, the average diameters of the encapsulated and decapsulated cysts were 230.5 +/- 4.14 and 221.8 +/- 3.39 microm, respectively. The thickness of the cyst shell was 4.35 +/- 0.68 microm and the length of the nauplii was 388.11 +/- 4.39 microm, this last value is among the smallest reported in the literature. For the commercial population of A. franciscana, the average diameters of the encapsulated and decapsulated cysts were 230.21 +/- 12.49 and 216.96 +/- 13.71, respectively. With respect to the corion thickness and length of the nauplii the values were 6.62 +/- 2.72 and 424.70 +/- 30.08, respectively. The protein value of the cysts (47.91 %) and nauplii (50.5 %) of Artemia population from Real de Salinas, are considered adequate to be used as food in aquaculture. The results indicate that the population from Real de Salinas presents positive features for its use in aquaculture in the region.  相似文献

Artemia brine shrimps are commercially important and they have been extensively studied. This branchiopod crustacean is extensively used in aquaculture and other commercial and applied practices. The genus also awakes an increasing interest worldwide as an experimental model in other basic areas of research such as evolution and cytogenetics. In the present work adult male meiosis and nauplii mitotic cells in two Artemia populations from Argentina (Mar Chiquita and Las Tunas, Córdoba Province) are analyzed and compared to the reference strains A. franciscana (Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA) and A. persimilis (Salinas Grandes de Hidalgo, La Pampa Province, Argentina). The Mar Chiquita population shows the diploid and haploid numbers characteristic of A. franciscana, and a regular male meiosis. In the Las Tunas population diverse diploid and haploid numbers are encountered, and an irregular meiosis is observed in some individuals. Fluorescent DAPI and CMA banding shows bright chromocenters of intermediate size and number in both populations. Cytogenetic and phenotypic data show that the population of Mar Chiquita could be assigned to A. franciscana; the variation found in chromocenter size and number reflects an heterochromatin polytypism already observed in this species. The cytogenetic and morphological traits in Las Tunas population suggest an occasional hybridization between A. franciscana and A. persimilis.  相似文献

Brine shrimp, Artemia, exhibit two modes of reproduction: oviparity (diapause cyst production) and ovoviviparity (live larvae release). Environmental conditions determining these developmental routes are poorly understood, so we investigated the effects of photoperiod and temperature on reproductive mode. Nauplii of A. franciscana were hatched from cysts produced in the Great Salt Lake, Utah, and raised in 2% natural sea salt water under photoperiods of 24, 14, 12, or 10 h at 28 degrees or 20 degrees C. Mating pairs of mature shrimp were isolated and reared continuously under those conditions. The mode of reproduction shown by each pair was determined daily throughout their life span, and found to be greatly affected by photoperiod, and less influenced by temperature. The relative degree of oviparity increased as the photoperiod became shorter at both temperatures. In contrast, the degree of ovoviviparity was higher as the photoperiod became longer at both temperatures. The critical photoperiod appears to be between 12 and 14 h. For all photoperiods examined, the degree of oviparity was higher at 28 degrees C than at 20 degrees C, whereas the degree of ovoviviparity was greater at 20 degrees C than at 28 degrees C.  相似文献

Artemia cysts produced in inoculated salt ponds in the Philippines, Thailand and India, were analyzed in comparison with the parental strains used for the inoculations. Cyst hatching efficiency, hatching rate and color changed significantly after inoculation, whereas the cyst's diameters, nauplius survival and nauplius growth remained fairly constant. The nutritional value of theArtemia nauplii was determined in a standard culture test withMysidopsis bahia juveniles as test animals. Production results were compared with the fatty acid profiles of theArtemia nauplii. Low levels of the essential fatty acid 20:53 in one of the produced cyst batches were probably caused by inadequate food conditions in the pond and resulted in poorer growth of theMysidopsis juveniles. Based on the results of this study a distinction is made between essential and nonessential strain selection-criteria forArtemia inoculations and transplantations.  相似文献

Body content of beta-hydroxybutyrate, and individual dry mass, carbon content, and survival rate, were studied in developing nauplii of the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana K. from hatching to 96-97 h post hatching at 27 +/- 1 degrees C. The effect of two diets was studied in the experiment: Super Selco (SS) with a high lipid content; and Protein Selco (PS) with a high protein content. A starving group (S) was used as reference. The level of beta-hydroxybutyrate at hatching was 0.6 nmol.ind-1; it increased to 1.0-1.5 nmol.ind-1 in the SS- and S-groups, while in the PS-group it remained stable between 0.6-0.8 nmol.ind-1. At 60-80 h post hatch in the SS- and S-groups, the levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate were similar to the initial levels. The survival rate remained higher than 95% until 24 h post hatching in all groups. At the end of the experiment, the survival rate was 63% in the PS-group, 13% in the S-group and 3% in the SS-group. The Artemia nauplii individual dry mass and carbon content remained relatively stable in the SS-group; both parameters showed a significant increase in the PS-group and a significant decrease in the S-group. The results suggest that Artemia nauplii utilise ketone bodies as a fuel during development and growth, but that ketone catabolism may be overloaded by excessive lipid feeding resulting in increased mortality and possibly a ketotic acidosis.  相似文献

Artemia larvae respond to a brief heat-shock between 28 degrees and 40 degrees C with an increase in the synthesis of two groups of proteins of Mr 68,000 and 89,000. At 40 degrees C synthesis of all other proteins is strongly repressed. Cysts, which are naturally thermotolerant, synthesise both heat-shock proteins at temperatures up to 47 degrees C but maintain normal protein synthesis. During pre-emergence development, Ap3A is present in cysts at a concentration twice that of Ap4A. The maximum level of 7.6 pmol/10(6) cells is reached shortly before hatching of the larvae. After hatching, the levels of both nucleotides decline. A 40 degrees C heat-shock produces a 1.8-fold increase in both nucleotides within 20 min in cysts and larvae. A 2.8-fold increase results from a 47 degrees C heat-shock to cysts. The rates of increase parallel but do not precede the increases in the heat-shock proteins. Since non-heat-shocked cysts possess higher levels of Ap3A and Ap4A than do heat-shocked larvae, the observed heat-induced changes in gene expression cannot be explained simply in terms of the intracellular concentrations of these nucleotides.  相似文献

An immunodetection assay on Western blots has been used to determine the thiol proteinase content and composition in cysts from 12 populations of the brine shrimp Artemia. Our results showed no differences in the subunit composition of the thiol proteinase among cysts from eight bisexual strains and four parthenogenic strains, and confirmed an earlier finding that the proteinase is composed of two subunits of 25.9 and 31.5 kilodaltons. In contrast, we found that Artemia cysts from parthenogenic strains contain 17.1 ng/cyst of the thiol proteinase, while cysts from bisexual strains contain 8.2 ng/cyst of the thiol proteinase. Also, there was a good linear correlation (r = 0.863; p less than 0.001) between the thiol proteinase content and cyst mass. Embryo fractionation experiments showed that 82% of the thiol proteinase was in the cytosol, while 14 and 4%, respectively, were in the nuclei/yolk platelets and mitochondria/lysosome fractions. Measurements of the thiol proteinase content of developing Artemia embryos showed that the proteinase content was relatively constant during early development, suggesting that the activity of the thiol proteinase gene(s) may be constitutive and not developmentally regulated in Artemia embryos.  相似文献

The brine shrimp, Artemia salina, has been used as a model system to assess microgravity effects on developing organisms. Following fertilization and early development, the egg can arrest in early gastrula as a dehydrated cyst stage that is stable to harsh environments over long time periods. When salt water is added, the cysts can reactivate, with embryonic development and egg hatching occurring in about 24 h. A series of larval molts or instars, over about a 2 week period, results in the adult crustacean. We have assessed these developmental events in a closed syringe system, a bioprocessing module, in ground-based studies, and have conducted preliminary in-orbit experiments aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis during the flights of STS-37 and STS-43. Although the in-flight data are limited, spectacular degrees of development have been achieved.  相似文献

Inbred strains of the brine shrimp were developed from dry dormant cysts of wild-type Artemia franciscana produced in the Great Salt Lake, U.S.A. The established strains were named GSL2, 4, and 7. They were raised in 2% natural sea salt solution at 28 degrees C under a long-day condition, and fed on food sold for Artemia. Ovoviviparous offspring (free-swimming nauplii) in each brood derived from full sib (sister x brother) matings were used for succeeding generations. The ordinal number of the filial generation increased at a rate of ten generations per year. The number was over 60, and the lineage was recorded. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analyses of the inbred strains revealed the uniqueness, homogeneity, and genetic similarity among them. Their life span, the time required to become sexually mature, brood size, mode of reproduction, and adaptation and tolerance to salinity changes were investigated. The inbred strains usually released free-swimming nauplii rather than spawning encysted gastrulae (dormant cysts). On the other hand, the opposite results were obtained from wild-type Artemia under the same conditions. Both adults and nauplii of the inbred strains appeared to be less adaptive and less tolerant to salinity changes compared to those of the wild type. The established inbred strains should provide a wider and deeper scope for Artemia biology in particular, and the life sciences in general.  相似文献

Egg hatch was greatest (78.33%) for eggs not previously desiccated. A reduction in numbers hatched occurred as the relative humidity at which they were dried decreased. Some eggs hatched (0.67–79.33%) at pH levels of 3.10–10.01 with the highest hatch at pH 5.60. Water temperature greatly affected egg hatch. No hatch occurred until temperatures were above 14°C. A constant 29°C significantly inhibited hatching. Egg hatch increased 13.00 to 43.42% as salinity decreased from 2200 to 9.24 micromhos/cm. As little as 13 mm of flooded soil covering the eggs prevented them from hatching for 14 days. Eighteen percent hatch resulted when soil and eggs were redistributed to a 1 mm soil layer. Egg samples from the same parent, even though treated similarly, often hatched at greatly varying rates and only rarely was hatching 100% within a replication.  相似文献

The use of juvenile Artemia as feed in aquaculture and in the pet shop industry has been getting more attention during the last decade. In this study, the use of selected bacterial strains to improve the nutritional value of dry food for Artemia juveniles and to obtain control of the associated microbial community was examined. Nine bacterial strains were selected based on their positive effects on survival and/or growth of Artemia juveniles under monoxenic culture conditions, while other strains caused no significant effect, significantly lower rates of survival and/or growth, or even total mortality of the Artemia. The nine selected strains were used to preemptively colonize the culture water of Artemia juveniles. Xenic culture of Artemia under suboptimal conditions yielded better survival and/or growth rates when they were grown in the preemptively colonized culture medium than when grown in autoclaved seawater. The preemptive colonization of the culture water had a drastic influence on the microbial communities that developed in the culture water or that were associated with the Artemia, as determined with Biolog GN community-level physiological profiles. Chemotaxonomical characterization based on fatty acid methyl ester analysis of bacterial isolates recovered from the culture tanks was performed, and a comparison with the initially introduced strains was made. Finally, several modes of action for the beneficial effect of the bacterial strains are proposed.  相似文献

In this study, we report on the known Artemia habitats worldwide. Recent literature information is incorporated about the taxonomic status of the various populations studied. The genus is composed of di-, tri-, tetra- and pentaploid parthenogenetic populations and of the following bisexual species: A. franciscana franciscana , A. franciscana monica , A. franciscana sp., A. persimilis , A. salina , A. urmiana , A. sinica and A. sp. from Kazakhstan. The problems of characterizing new brine shrimp populations are discussed. In view of the great importance of Artemia as part of the live food chain for the culture of fish and shellfish larvae and the present cyst shortage from the market, the need for commercial exploitation and development of new Artemia sources is now, more than ever, necessary.  相似文献

Extracts from dormant and developing embryos of Artemia salina contain almost undetectable levels of protease activity. However, after hatching of the nauplii, there is a high increase in the activity of the extracts on different proteolytic substrates. The activities correspond to four different enzymes, A, B, C, and D, that have a sequential timing of induction during the early larval development. The enzymes show a different elution pattern after chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and a different sensitivity to protease inhibitors. Enzyme A is strongly inhibited by phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, while the other enzymes are mostly insensitive. Enzymes A, B, and C are sensitive at low concentrations of the soybean trypsin inhibitor. The temporal induction of these enzymes is an example of the expression, at the biochemical level, of the developmental program of Artemia salina.  相似文献

The brine shrimp Artemia parthenogenetica (Crustacea, Branchiopoda) is intermediate host for several cestode species whose final hosts are waterbirds. Previous field studies have shown that brine shrimps infected with cestodes have a bright red colour and are spatially segregated in the water column. However, the ethological mechanisms explaining such field observations are unknown. Changes in appearance and behaviour induced by trophically transmitted parasites have been shown to increase the risk of predation by the final host. In this experimental study, we compared the behaviour of uninfected Artemia and those infected by avian cestodes. We found that parasitised individuals behave differently from unparasitised ones in several ways. In contrast to uninfected individuals, infected brine shrimps were photophilous and showed increased surface-swimming behaviour. These observations suggest that the modified behaviour (in addition to the bright red colour of the majority of the infected individuals) results in infected brine shrimps becoming more vulnerable to avian final hosts, which facilitates parasite transmission. We discuss our results in terms of the adaptive nature of behavioural changes and their potential implications for the hypersaline ecosystem.  相似文献

AIMS: To evaluate the growth of Listeria monocytogenes and shelf life of cooked and peeled shrimps in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). METHODS AND RESULTS: Storage trials with naturally contaminated cooked and peeled MAP shrimps (Pandalus borealis) were carried out at 2, 5 and 8 degrees C. Challenge tests at the same conditions were performed after inoculation with Listeria monocytogenes. Both storage trials and challenge tests were repeated after 4 months of frozen storage (-22 degrees C). Brochothrix thermosphacta and Carnobacterium maltaromaticum were responsible for sensory spoilage of cooked and peeled MAP shrimps. In challenge tests, growth of L. monocytogenes was observed at all of the storage temperatures studied. At 5 and 8 degrees C the concentration of L. monocytogenes increased more than a 1000-fold before the product became sensory spoiled whereas this was not observed at 2 degrees C. Frozen storage had only a minor inhibiting effect on growth of L. monocytogenes in the thawed product. CONCLUSIONS: To prevent L. monocytogenes becoming a safety problem, cooked and peeled MAP shrimps should be distributed at 2 degrees C and with a maximum shelf life of 20-21 d. At higher temperatures shelf life is significantly reduced. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Information is provided to establish shelf life of cooked and peeled MAP shrimps.  相似文献

Two feeding experiments were conducted to evaluate the growth and survival rates of tench Tinca tinca L. larvae when initially fed with a combination of three different brands of Artemia nauplii under two conditions: (A) in the laboratory and (B) on a commercial farm. At the same time, a protozoan culture of the freshwater ciliate Colpoda cucullus was additionally tested in one of the experiments to possibly enhance the initial hunting behaviour of the larvae. The larvae were fed every 4 h from the onset of exogenous feeding up to 14 days of age. Three types of commercial Artemia products, mainly differing in size and high unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) content, were used. One group was fed with C. cucullus as a starter. The different combinations of Artemia nauplii were used to evaluate possible effects on larval growth. The final growth at 26.3 °C, expressed in length and weight, did not show significant differences, suggesting the use of the most economically feasible Artemia strain studied. The experiments confirmed that using smaller prey during the first 2 days of feeding increases their survival rate, although the mean final survival rate was high (89%). In the experiment carried out at the commercial fish farm facilities, experimental groups were also fed with Artemia nauplii, using the EG type either enriched or not enriched with HUFA. Again, one of the groups was offered the ciliate C. cucullus as initial feed. Final growth showed significant differences when using Colpoda culture as a starter feed, although this test resulted in the lowest survival rate (69%), indicating that further studies on the management of its culture should be undertaken to improve the applicability of the technique. The cyst banks of 6 coastal hypersaline lakes of South-East Europe have been investigated. The study concerned the bottom sediments of Khersonesskoe and Koyashskoe lakes in the Crimea (Ukraine), Nartë saltworks (Albania), Vecchia Salina at Torre Colimena (Apulia, Italy), Pantano Grande and Pantano Roveto at Vendicari (Sicily, Italy). A total of 19 cyst types were recognised. The cyst banks of lakes were found to be well separated in the representation derived from a statistical multivariate data analysis. For all the lakes examined a comparison was possible between the resting community in sediments (cyst bank) and the active one in the water. The cyst banks contained more species than those recorded over a multi-year sampling effort in the water column. The study of cyst hatching, performed on 5 cyst types under lab conditions, demonstrated that cysts do not hatch under the same conditions. Furthermore, each cyst type shows a wide range of preferential hatching conditions, which allow us to confirm the ecological generalism of salt lake species.  相似文献
