The relative autonomy of branches within an individual plant may favor different resource allocation responses after reproductive losses. The assessment of these reproductive strategies at the branch level before their integration at the plant level would provide more insight into how plants deal with reproductive losses. Here, we present a field experiment to assess changes in the allocation strategies at the branch level after sink strength manipulation in a Mediterranean woody plant (Cistus ladanifer). We applied three levels of removal of developing fruits (75, 25 and 0 %) on branches of the same plants, and measured their effects on resource allocation (biomass, nitrogen and phosphorus) and seed production after controlling for the effects of branch diameter and leaf weight per branch. Our results suggest that after experimental fruit thinning, C. ladanifer branches presented a sink-driven allocation of biomass to fruits but this was not the case for the allocation of nutrients to seeds, which could be driven by competition with leaf biomass. Reductions in biomass per fruit resulted in a reduction in seed output since the average weight per seed remained constant. From these results, it could be suggested that an heterogeneous distribution of fruit losses among the branches within a crown would produce a higher impact on reproductive output than a more equitable distribution.  相似文献

Many factors may affect reproduction of animal-pollinated species. In this study, the effects of pollen limitation, attractive traits (flower number, plant height and flower width) and flowering phenological traits (flowering onset, duration and synchrony) on female reproduction, as well as the patterns of variation in fruit and seed production within plants, were investigated in Paeonia ostii “Feng Dan” over two flowering seasons (2018 and 2019). Fruit set was very high (90%), and pollen supplementation did not increase fruit and seed production in either year, indicating no pollen limitation. Fruit set, ovule number per fruit and mean individual seed weight per fruit were not affected by any of the six attractive and phenological traits in either year, whereas seed number per fruit was related to the three attractive traits in one or both years. Seed number per plant was positively affected by the three attractive traits and best explained by flower number in both years, but the effect of each of the three phenological traits on seed number per plant differed between years. Within plants, the fruit set, ovule number, seed set and seed number per fruit declined from early- to late-opening flowers, presumably because of resource preemption, but the mean individual seed weight did not vary across the flowering sequence. Our study shows that attractive traits of Paeonia ostii “Feng Dan” are more important than flowering phenological traits in the prediction of total seed production per plant.  相似文献

The germination response of different sized seeds from individuals of a Mediterranean fire-prone shrub (Cistus ladanifer) was investigated in relation to pre-germination heating. A control (no heating), a low temperature during a short exposure time (50°C during 5 min), a high temperature during a short exposure time (100°C during 5 min) and a high temperature during a long exposure time (100°C during 15 min) were applied to seeds from different individual plants with different mean seed weight. These pre-germination treatments resemble natural germination scenarios for the studied species, absence of fire, low intensity pasture fire, typical Mediterranean shrub fire, and severe fire with high fuel load. Mean seed weight only showed a marginally significant positive correlation with the proportion of germinated seeds whatever the pre-germination treatment. These results suggest that seed dormancy is unrelated to seed size and that under the experimental conditions used in this study, the effect of seed size on seed germination is low. Nevertheless, larger seeds could be favoured in natural conditions, especially under the high competition scenario which arise after wildfires. Control seeds showed a negative correlation between seed size and germination velocity suggesting that lighter seeds could take advantage from early germination in recruitment events in the absence of wildfires. Nevertheless, even the lower pre-germination heating treatment turns this correlation in not significant, suggesting a strong selection pressure (unrelated to seed size) for early germination after fire events. In our study, different sized seeds of C. ladanifer seem to perform better under different germination scenarios suggesting that seed size variation could be maintained by the alternation of recruitments without wildfires and recruitments after wildfire events.  相似文献

The phenology, major floral characteristics, fruiting levels, and breeding system ofCistus ladanifer L. (Cistaceae), a common western Mediterranean shrub species, were studied in a southern Spanish population. The white, large (64 mm in diameter) flowers of this shrub appear during spring (March–May) and produce abundant pollen and nectar. In the year of study, flowers lasted up to three days, during which they were visited by a diverse array of insects including beetles, flies, and bees. Hand-pollinations revealed that flowers do not set any seed unless cross pollen is applied to the stigma. Microscopical observations indicate that self pollen tubes grow down the stigma but invariably fail to induce fruit maturation. At the plant level, all estimates of fecundity investigated (number of seeds per capsule, proportion of ovules developing into seed, and proportion of flowers setting fruit) were highly dependent on nearest neighbour distance, with isolated plants setting as little as 0% fruit. In contrast, plants within a clump often transformed into fruit as much as 90% of the flowers. At the population level, seed output was estimated to range between 3,000 and 270,000 seeds per plant during 1991.  相似文献

Variation is the raw material for evolution. Differences among populations in the expression of traits related to plant fitness may result from natural selection, phenotypic plasticity (in response to local conditions), and developmental instability (manifested as high intra-individual variation in repeated patterns or characters). Cistus ladanifer is a highly polymorphic plant distributed in the Mediterranean and the only species in the family (Cistaceae, 180 species) with a variable number of valves per fruit. We herein analysed the variation in the number of valves (5–12) and seeds (318–1185) per fruit in 36 populations (607 individuals, 1821 fruits) at different levels: temporal, geographical, ecogeographical, taxonomic, and phylogeographical. In addition, we tested whether an increased number of fruit valves influences pre-dispersal seed predation. Large variation in the number of valves and seeds per fruit among populations, individuals, and years was reported. The number of ovules and seeds per valve increased with a higher number of fruit valves. Geographical and taxonomic variables did not significantly explained this fruit variation. On the contrary, we found a negative relationship between the number of fruit valves and altitude and a positive relationship with precipitation. We argue that ecogeographical factors, in addition to some phylogeographical and phylogenetic signals, are involved in the multiplication of carpels during the development of the ovary wall. This, coupled with the results of the evolutionary history of Cistus in previous studies, indicates active evolutionary processes in C. ladanifer populations.  相似文献

Many morphological features of fruits are important factors affecting predispersal seed predation by insects. This paper analyses the predispersal seed predation process of a major predator (a Noctuidae lepidopteran larvae) in loculate fruits of a bushy perennial plant, Cistus ladanifer. The main aim of the study is to assess the potential effect of internal valvae (which partition groups of seeds) in the intraspecific competition between larvae in multiple-infested fruits.Our results show that larvae do not reject already infested fruits, but they avoid the proximity of other larvae within the fruit, keeping an average minimum distance of one locule. In multiple-infested fruits, larval mortality increases and the proportion of seeds consumed by each larvae decreases. In those situations in which valvae keep apart larvae within a fruit, these only suffer the cost of exploitation competition with a low acquisition of resources. However, when all valvae between them are pierced by the larvae, competition switches to an interference component and larval mortality increases markedly. The existence of valvae within a fruit allows larvae to diminish the cost of intraspecific competition, obtaining high life expectancies (70%), even in triple-infested fruits.  相似文献

Fruit consumption by birds is an important ecological interaction that contributes to seed dispersal in tropical rainforests. In this field experiment, we asked whether moderate human disturbance alters patterns of avian frugivory: we measured fruit removal by birds in the lower montane rainforest of Tobago, West Indies, using artificial infructescences made with natural fruits from two common woody plants of the forest understory (Psychotria spp., Rubiaceae). Displays were mounted simultaneously in three forest habitats chosen to represent a gradient of increasing habitat disturbance (primary, intermediate and disturbed), caused by subsistence land use adjacent to a protected forest reserve. We measured the numbers of fruits removed and the effect of fruit position on the likelihood of removal, along with the abundances of all fruits and fruit‐eating birds at the study sites. Fruit removal was highly variable and there was not a significant difference in removal rate among forest habitats; however, the trend was for higher rates of removal from displays in primary forest. Canopy cover, natural fruit availability, and frugivore abundance were not good predictors of fruit removal. Birds preferred more accessible fruits (those proximal to the perch) in all habitats, but in disturbed forest, there was a tendency for distal fruits to be chosen more frequently than in the other forest types. One possible explanation for this pattern is that birds in disturbed forests were larger than those in other habitats, and hence were better able to reach the distal fruits. Coupled with differences in bird community composition among the forest types, this suggests that different suites of birds were removing fruit in primary versus disturbed forest. As frugivore species have different effectiveness as seed dispersers, the among‐habitat differences in fruit removal patterns that we observed could have important implications for plant species experiencing disturbance; these possible implications include altered amounts of seed deposition and seedling recruitment in Tobago's tropical rainforest.  相似文献

Summary We conducted a controlled crossing experiment to examine the effects of maternal and paternal parentage, the size of the pollen load, and prior fruit production on the proportion of flowers that set fruit, seed number per fruit and seed weight in a natural population of Campanula americana. Effects due to the maternal parent were large for all measures of fruit and seed production, while the paternal parent had a significant effect only upon mean seed weight. As the number of prior fruits on the maternal plant increased the probability that a flower would produce a mature fruit, the number of seeds per fruit, and total seed weight per fruit all decreased. We found no effect of the size of the pollen loads used in this study on fruit or seed production. These results are consistent with those of other studies that suggest in natural plant populations maternal effects, especially environmental maternal effects, can have an overwhelming effect on fruit and seed production and on seed characteristics.  相似文献

A control (no heating), a high temperature during a short exposure time (100 degrees C during 5 min) and a high temperature during a long exposure time (100 degrees C during 15 min) were applied to seeds from different individual plants with different mean seed weight. These pre-germination treatments resemble natural germination scenarios for the studied species, absence of fire, typical Mediterranean shrub fire, and severe fire with high fuel load. Seed germination was related to heat treatments and seed mass. Seed heating increased the proportion of seeds germinating compared with the control treatment. Mean seed weight was positively correlated to the proportion of germinated seeds but only within heat treatments. These results suggest that in periods without fire, the relative contributions to the population dynamics are equal for all seeds, regardless of their mass, whereas heavier seeds would be the main contribution after wildfire events. Since lighter seeds can be produced in higher quantities than heavier ones within a given fruit, the number of seedlings produced per fruit depended strongly on the germination conditions. In the absence of wildfire, fruits producing lighter seeds gave rise to more seedlings; nevertheless, they were numerically exceeded by those producing heavy seeds after a wildfire. The implications of these results are discussed in relation to their consequences on the population dynamics of this species, considering also additional information on stand flammability and changes in seed mass with plant age.  相似文献

Abstract. Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to determine the effects of artificial fruit removal and clipping (simulated deer browsing) on components of reproduction of two indeterminate dune annuals: Cakile edentula var. lacustris (Bigel.) Hook and Corispermum hyssopifolium L. The results showed that both species were able to partially or completely compensate or even overcompensate for low to moderate levels of clipping or fruit removal only if the damage occurred in the early stages of fruit development. The indeterminate habit of growth of both species facilitated their compensatory ability. The removal of fruits and clipping of plants which mimick browsing by white tailed deer along Lake Huron resulted in a significant increase in their period of flowering and fruiting, especially in the early stages of fruit development. The plants compensated for fruit loss by increasing the number of fruits per plant. A delay in fruit removal or clipping to later stages of fruit maturation of both species drastically reduced reproduction. Similar experiments in the field revealed that, although the critical periods during which the plants were most susceptible were the same, the plants had lower compensatory ability. Fruit damage and clipping generally did not affect the seed mass of both species.  相似文献

Flower size and number usually evolve under pollinator‐mediated selection. However, hot, dry environments can also modulate display, counteracting pollinator attraction. Increased pollen deposition on larger flower displays may not involve higher female fitness. Consequently, stressful conditions may constrain flower size, favouring smaller‐sized flowers. The large‐flowered, self‐incompatible Mediterranean shrub Cistus ladanifer was used to test that: (1) this species suffers pollen limitation; (2) pollinators are spatially–temporally variable and differentially visit plants with more/larger flowers; (3) increased visits enhance reproduction under pollen limitation; (4) stressful conditions reduce female fitness of larger displays; and (5) phenotypic selection on floral display is not just pollinator‐mediated. We evaluated pollen limitation, related floral display to pollinator visits and fruit and seed production and estimated phenotypic selection. Flower size was 7.2–10.5 cm and varied spatially–temporally. Visitation rates (total visits/50 min) ranged from 0.26 to 0.43 and increased with flower size. Fruit set averaged 80% and seed number averaged 855, but only fruit set varied between populations and years. Selection towards larger flowers was detected under conditions of pollen limitation. Otherwise, we detected stabilizing selection on flower size and negative selection on flower number. Seed-dispersing birds can be expected to optimize their energy intake through fruit selection and hence exert a positive selection on fruit pulp content, that is to say, favoring big fruits with small seeds. On the other hand they may select both, average fruit size and its variation. We addressed this issue by analyzing the phenotypic selection exerted by the dispersers of Crataegus monogyna on the fruit and seed size of this species. Fruit and seed size were analyzed at two ontogenic plant stages: the initial size of seeds (and their fruits) as future individuals and the mean size of fruits and seeds produced by adult plants. Fruit diameter and its within-individual variation are the actual targets of selection for maternal fruit traits, negatively affecting relative fitness, although total selection acts only on mean fruit size. For individual seeds, size selection is positive and directed at fruit diameter and seed length, while the remaining traits are subject to indirect selection. Birds exerted a correlational selection favoring big fruits with small seeds. Nevertheless the evolutionary consequences of this selection are expected to be limited by several factors. For example, the positive correlation between fruit and seed sizes, the existence of counteracting selective pressures exerted by other mutualistic or antagonist interactions and temporal or spatial changes in the environmental conditions that may alter the selective forces and even the optimum phenotype in each situation.  相似文献

Fruit use by the Japanese black bear (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) and seed clumping in bear scat were studied in central Japan using fecal analyses. Between May and November 2003 and 2004, the life form and fruit size of plants consumed by bears and the species composition and intactness of seeds contained in scat were examined in five transects (approximately 10 km × 10 m) in broad-leaved deciduous forests. In 2003, scats with seeds were found only in the autumn, when fruiting trees and shrubs were abundant. In 2004, scats with seeds occurred intermittently from the summer, when fruiting plants were rare, up to the autumn. Yearly and seasonal variation in fruit use reflects the opportunistic foraging behavior of Japanese black bears. Seven of the nine plant species detected in scats had medium-sized fruits (6–15 mm width), whereas the other two species had relatively large fruits (20–100 mm width). In total, 14,492 seeds were detected, of which 97.6% were intact; the remainder were damaged. Intact seeds of one or two species were found in each scat. The number of intact seeds per scat ranged from 1 to 5476. Japanese black bears seldom digest ingested seeds, thereby contributing to the seed dispersal of their food plants, including species with fruits that are too large to be swallowed by frugivorous birds.  相似文献

Fruit removal is a key component of the seed dispersal process with direct consequences for plant recruitment. Anthropogenic disturbances might affect removal rates by changing frugivore diversity and their behavior. Here, we investigated the effects of local forest structure and landscape context on fruit removal of two common pioneer species of Melastomataceae family, Clidemia capitellata and Henriettea succosa in 14 Atlantic forest sites. We evaluated local forest structure, measured as canopy openness and conspecific density, and the amount of forest cover at the landscape scale measured in 2000 m buffer radius. Our results showed that the landscape context was more important than local features to explain fruit removal. The percentage of fruits removed from both species sharply decreases with forest loss and increases again in highly deforested landscapes. We demonstrate changes in fruit removal due to forest loss and suggest that both Melastomataceae species rely on the absence of other plant species, and consequently, in a less competitive environment to increase fruit removal and seed dispersal. The quantity of fruit consumed by dispersers is highly variable among individuals within plant populations. The outcome of such selection operated by frugivores has been examined mostly with respect to changing spatial contexts. The influence of varying temporal contexts on frugivore choice, and their possible demographic and evolutionary consequences is poorly understood. We examined if temporal variation in fruit availability across a hierarchy of nested temporal levels (interannual, intraseasonal, 120 h, 24 h) altered frugivore choice for a complex seed dispersal system in dry tropical forests of southern India. The interactions between Phyllanthus emblica and its primary disperser (ruminants) was mediated by another frugivore (a primate), which made large quantities of fruit available on the ground to ruminants. The direction and strength of crop size and neighborhood effects on this interaction varied with changing temporal contexts. Fruit availability was higher in the first of the two study years, and at the start of the season in both years. Fruit persistence on trees, determined by primate foraging, was influenced by crop size and conspecific neighborhood densities only in the high fruit availability year. Fruit removal by ruminants was influenced by crop size in both years and neighborhood densities only in the high availability year. In both years, these effects were stronger at the start of the season. Intraseasonal reduction in fruit availability diminished inequalities in fruit removal by ruminants and the influence of crop size and fruiting neighborhoods. All trees were not equally attractive to frugivores in a P. emblica population at all points of time. Temporal asymmetry in frugivore‐mediated selection could reduce potential for co‐evolution between frugivores and plants by diluting selective pressures. Inter‐dependencies formed between disparate animal consumers can add additional levels of complexity to plant–frugivore mutualistic networks and have potential reproductive consequences for specific individuals within populations.  相似文献

In four field and glasshouse experiments designed to alter the supply of resources through manipulation of nutrients, root tissue, leaf area and fruit number in Alliaria petiolata (Brassicaceae), more than 99% of ovules per plant showed signs of fertilization, suggesting that seed production in this plant was not pollen limited. However, in all treatments a significant proportion of fruits and seeds did not develop to maturity. Total fruit and seed production did not differ significantly from controls when plants were given nutrient supplements at flowering. Removal of 50–75% of the root tissue in 1-yr-old plants significantly reduced fruit set, but had no effect on individual seed development. Removal of cauline leaves significantly reduced most measures of fruit and seed production, suggesting that current photosynthate is critical for fruit and seed filling. Seed maturation was significantly affected by both fruit position within an infructescence and ovule position within a fruit. Basally located fruits and ovules (within fruits) developed more mature seeds than distally positioned fruits and ovules. Plants responded to removal of basal fruits by re-allocating resources to distal fruits that would normally have aborted. Our results suggest that fruits and seeds act as reproductive sinks competing for parental photosynthate. Patterns of resource allocation within infructescences and fruits were also modified by our experiments.  相似文献

Light is a fundamental heterogeneous environmental factor for plants and often varies at both spatial and temporal scales. In the present study, we carried out a shading experiment to investigate the effect of variable light availability at the rosette stage of the first year in the strict biennial species Pedicularis torta (an endemic species of the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau) on reproductive traits (i.e. total number of flowers per plant, total number of fruits per plant/total number of flowers per plant, the number of seeds per fruit, mean individual seed mass and estimation of the total number of seeds per plant, plant size at maturity in the second year and on the relationships between reproductive traits and plant size at this stage). We found that light availability affected most of the reproductive traits (except for mean individual seed mass), plant size at maturity in the second year, and the relationship between the total number of flowers per plant and plant size at this stage. Our results indicate that reproductive traits respond to changes in light availability during the rosette plant stage.  相似文献

Competition for seed dispersers is supposedly a selective force that drives the evolution of plant reproductive traits. In the understory of tropical forests, such competition should be especially severe among bird-dispersed plant species because (i) the production of copious fruit crops is limited by low light availability; (ii) there usually is a high density of fleshy fruited plants, and (iii) understory frugivorous birds are not abundant. In this paper, we took advantage of a high-density population of Geonoma pauciflora, a bird-dispersed palm species growing in the understory of the Brazilian Atlantic forest, to investigate the influence of plant traits and its immediate neighborhood on fruit removal. Intrinsic (crop and fruit sizes) and extrinsic traits (related to light availability) affected the fruit removal of G. pauciflora. Crop size had a greater influence than fruit size on the absolute number of fruits removed, whereas none of the investigated traits influenced decisively fruit removal efficiency (i.e., the proportion of an individual’s crop removed). The influence of light availability was mostly indirect, through its positive influence on fruit production. A significant positive spatial autocorrelation in removal efficiency occurred among neighboring plants within a 7-m radius, which is indicative of facilitation among neighboring individuals. The consequence of such positive spatial autocorrelation in removal efficiency for clonal plants such as G. pauciflora is that by attracting a frugivore a given ramet may promote the removal of fruits of other ramets, thus enhancing the reproductive output of the genet as a whole.  相似文献

Summary This study examines the pattern of reproduction and factors that limit the maternal reproductive output in the self-incompatible annual, Lesquerella gordonii. Greenhouse experiments showed that fruits do not abscise and they mature if they contain at least one fertilized (outcrossed) ovule. Field studies showed that flowering increased to a peak and then fell off rapidly, while seed production/fruit decreased through the season. Pollen addition did not increase the number of fruit or seeds per fruit, suggesting that fruit and seed production are not pollinator limited. Addition of water increased fruit and seed production by extending the life of the plant, by increasing the number of stalks which flowered, and by increasing the number of seeds per fruit. This indicates that fruit and seed production are resource limited. Fruits are relatively inexpensive as compared to seeds as over 93% of the water in fruits is contained in the seeds. Fifty-three percent of the plants were lost to herbivory as were 64.6% of the fruits on the remaining plants, indicating that herbivory also limited fruit and seed production. It is hypothesized that high fruit set coupled with variable seed set in L. gordonii is an adaptive response to unpredictable, variable resource levels, and high herbivory risk.  相似文献
