After a single exposure to doses ranging from 0.05 to 0.50 Gy, the SOD activities in immune organs of the irradiated rats, at 4 h after whole-body X irradiation, showed significant increases by 50 to 90% (hereinafter p less than 0.05) in comparison with the control groups. The dose in the brain and liver showed tendencies to increase by 30 to 50% for doses ranging from 0.50 to 2.50 Gy. The levels of TBARS (lipid peroxides) in immune organs decreased significantly by 20 to 50% in contrast with the control groups for doses ranging from 0.10 to 1.00 Gy. Decreases by 20 to 30% were observed in brains and livers for doses near 0.50 Gy. When the dose was 0.25 Gy, the SOD activities in the spleen showed a persistent radiation-induced increase for at least 12 weeks, livers for 8 weeks, brains and thymuses for 4 weeks, and bone marrows for about 1 week. The TBARS levels in the brain and thymus showed persistent decreases due to irradiation for at least 12 weeks, and those in bone marrows for 8 h.  相似文献

This article describes a method for the determination of gasoline range, diesel range, and mineral oil range organics in soils and water. It represents the culmination of a series of efforts to go beyond typical GRO and DRO methodology currently available in the literature to include a quantitative determination of mineral oil organics having a boiling range up to C44. It also is the result of an attempt to develop a cost‐effective method that enables the analyst to quantify three different types of hydrocarbon components in one GC run under conditions without a concentration step. Method performance is comparable to that of current protocols for GRO and DRO determinations and validated further by comparisons to certified standards and in‐house standards. Accuracy as percentage recovery for GRO in water is 82 to 84 and 91 to 92% for soils. Accuracy as percentage recovery for MRO in water is 84 to 102 and 75 to 80% for soils. Accuracy as percentage recovery for DRO in water is 78 to 100 and 71 to 90% for soils. Results from the analysis of in‐house standards and certified standards for DRO and MRO gave higher recoveries than was demonstrated in the MDL studies. The MDL for DRO in water is 31 mg/l and 14 mg/kg for soils. The MDL for GRO in water is 8 mg/l and 4 mg/kg for soils. For MRO in water, the MDL is 7 mg/l and for soils 10 mg/kg. Future proposed improvements to this method will involve updated software that will allow automatic blank subtraction, automatic calculation of surrogate recoveries and the automatic incorporation of dry weight factors in the final calculations for soils. In addition, a GRO method with a run time of only 24 min will be used routinely when only GRO analyses have to be performed.  相似文献

The fundamental questions revolving around research into trace metals in soils are how much, and in what form, do metals exist in soil solutions. The mobile phase of soil solutions can be sampled by lysimeters, but cannot be consistently and accurately reproduced in laboratory extractions. We used a column leaching method developed specifically to produce solutions that were similar to those of lysimeters from northern forest podzolic soils. We hoped to yield reasonable estimates of the partitioning of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn between the solid and solution phases observed in the field. The column leaching method produced solutions that were similar to lysimeter solutions in the concentrations of metals in solution. Partitioning coefficients (log Kd) calculated from average lysimeters solution concentrations ranged from 2.8 to 3.9 for Cd, 3.5 to 4.2 for Cu, 3.1 to 4.3 for Ni, 3.9 to 5.1 for Pb and 2.8 to 3.6 for Zn. Laboratory extractions produced very similar log Kd values ranging from 3.4 to 3.9 for Cd, 3.4 to 3.9 for Cu, 3.4 to 4.1 for Ni, 4.1 to 5.2 for Pb and 3.2 to 3.5 for Zn. According to a semi-mechanistic regression model based on observed lysimeter concentrations, the metal concentrations in solution were appropriate relative to known factors that influence metal partitioning in soils: pH and the concentrations of total metals and dissolved organic carbon. Partitioning coefficients based on laboratory extractions in the literature were on average an order of magnitude greater than those observed in lysimeters. When compared to the results of other laboratory extractions, the proposed extraction procedure appeared to be an effective method to estimate the chemistry of soil solutions in the field.  相似文献

The toxicity of the most commonly used insecticides of organochlorine, organophosphate, pyrethroid, and carbamate groups were investigated against Spodoptera litura (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) populations collected for three consecutive years (2004-2006). For a chlorocyclodiene and pyrethroids tested, the resistance ratios compared with Lab-PK were in the range of 10- to 92-fold for endosulfan, 5- to 111-fold for cypermethrin, 2- to 98-fold for deltamethrin, and 7- to 86-fold for beta-cyfluthrin. For organophosphates and carbamates, resistance ratios were in the range of 3- to 169-fold for profenofos, 18- to 421-fold for chlorpyrifos, 3- to 160-fold for quinalphos, 6- to 126-fold for phoxim, 7- to 463-fold for triazophos, and 10- to 389-fold for methomyl and 16- to 200-fold for thiodicarb. Resistance ratios were generally low to medium for deltamethrin and beta-cyfluthrin and high to very high for endosulfan, cypermethrin, profenofos, chlorpyrifos, quinalphos, phoxim, triazophos, methomyl, or thiodicarb. Pairwise comparisons of the log LC50 values of insecticides tested for all the populations showed correlations among several insecticides, suggesting a cross-resistance mechanism. Integration of timely judgment of pest problem, delimiting growing of alternate crops such as arum, rotation of insecticides with new chemicals, and insect growth regulators in relation to integrated pest management could help in manageable control of this important pest.  相似文献

The apparent Michaelis constant, Km, for transport of a number of neutral amino acids has been compared between intestine, heart, brain and erythrocytes among a variety of animals using values available in the literature. Neutral amino acids with side chains containing 3, 4, 7 and 9 carbon atoms had approximately equal mean Km values when tested for intestinal transport among a variety of species; alanine appeared to have a mean Km value that was larger than those found for the first group, and glycine had a significantly greater mean Km than all of the other compounds tested. Km values for phenylalanine and tryptophan measured in rat heart were found to be close to the means measured for these substrates in intestine. The mean Km values measured in mammalian brain for each of the neutral amino acid substrates were found not be significantly different from each other. When the means of Km values for the neutral amino acids tested were compared between intestine and brain, only the glycine means were shown to differ significantly between the organs. Based on data for several mammalian species, brain appears to have a greater average apparent affinity for glycine than does intestine. In the human erythrocytes and in a few other mammalian species, Km values for all neutral amino acids tested with exception of glycine were found to be similar in magnitude to each other and to the Km averages of neutral amino acids found in intestine for the series containing 3-9 carbon atoms. The Km value for glycine in the human erythrocyte was noted to be substantially lower in value than the averages for glycine in brain or intestine. Avian red blood cells appear to have high apparent affinity for neutral amino acid transport when compared with red cells of several mammalian species.  相似文献

Boron, which is ubiquitous in the environment, causes developmental and reproductive effects in experimental animals. This observation has led to efforts to establish a Tolerable Intake value for boron. Although risk assessors agree on the use of fetal weight decreases observed in rats as an appropriate critical effect, consensus on the adequacy of toxicokinetic data as a basis for replacement of default uncertainty factors remains to be reached. A critical analysis of the existing data on boron toxicokinetics was conducted to clarify the appropriateness of replacing default uncertainty factors (10-fold for interspecies differences and 10-fold for intraspecies differences) with data-derived values. The default uncertainty factor for variability in response from animals to humans of 10-fold (default values of 4-fold for kinetics and 2.5-fold for dynamics) was recommended, since clearance of boron is 3-to 4-fold higher in rats than in humans and data on dynamic differences—in order to modify the default value—are unavailable. A data-derived adjustment of 6-fold (1.8 for kinetics and 3.1 for dynamics) rather than the default uncertainty factor of 10-fold was considered appropriate for intrahuman variability, based on variability in glomerular filtration rate during pregnancy in humans and the lack of available data on dynamic differences. Additional studies to investigate the toxicokinetics of boron in rats would be useful to provide a stronger basis for replacement of default uncertainty factors for interspecies variation.  相似文献

采用药膜法研究了福州建新和闽侯上街菜蚜茧蜂Diaeretiella rapae对杀虫剂抗药性的季节性变化。田间菜蚜茧蜂种群在网室内脱离选择压力后对杀虫剂敏感性显著升高。与敏感的F21子代的LC50相比,2002年6月8日至2004年11月18日期间,建新菜区菜蚜茧蜂对甲胺磷、氟虫腈、阿维菌素、氰戊菊酯和吡虫啉的抗性倍数分别为11.8~31.2,9.3~14.7,9.3~35.7,7.0~16.6,和13.3~30.1倍;2003年6月5日至2004年12月17日期间,上街菜区菜蚜茧蜂对甲胺磷、氟虫腈、阿维菌素、氰戊菊酯和吡虫啉的抗性倍数分别为7.5~34.9,4.0~14.3,9.2~38.6,7.8~18.9和12.1~24.2倍。田间菜蚜茧蜂种群在5月份和6月初抗性水平最高,12月份较低,6月末最低,尤其在6月份期间20天内抗性水平急剧下降。研究结果表明,田间菜蚜茧蜂对6种杀虫剂的抗性水平在脱离选择压力后不稳定,且呈显著的季节性变化。表2参25  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To assess effects of price, income, and health publicity on cigarette smoking by age, sex, and socioeconomic group. DESIGN--Econometric multiple regression analysis of data on cigarette smoking from the British general household survey. SUBJECTS--Random sample of adult population in Britain interviewed for biennial general household surveys 1972-90. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Changes in cigarette consumption and prevalence of smoking. RESULTS--Price elasticities of demand for cigarettes (percentage change in cigarette consumption for a 1% change in price) were significant at -0.5 (95% confidence interval -0.8 to -0.1) for men and -0.6 (-0.9 to -0.3) for women, were highest in socioeconomic group V (-1.0 for men and -0.9 for women), and lowest (not significantly different from zero) in socioeconomic groups I and II. The gradient in price elasticities by socioeconomic group was significant for men (F = 5.6, P = 0.02) and for women (F = 6.1, P = 0.02). Price was a significant factor in cigarette consumption by age for women in every age group and for men aged 25-34. Cigarette consumption by young men aged 16-34 increased with income. There was a significant decrease in smoking over time by women in socioeconomic groups I and II and by men in all age and social groups except socioeconomic group V attributable to health publicity. Price significantly affected smoking prevalence in socioeconomic group V (-0.6 for men and -0.5 for women) and for all women (-0.2). CONCLUSIONS--Men and women in lower socioeconomic groups are more responsive than are those in higher socioeconomic groups to changes in the price of cigarettes and less to health publicity. Women of all ages, including teenagers, appear to have been less responsive to health publicity than have men but more responsive to price. Response to health publicity decreased linearly with age. Real price increases in cigarettes could narrow differences between socioeconomic groups in smoking and the related inequalities in health, but specific measures would be necessary to ameliorate effects on the most deprived families that may include members who continue to smoke. The use of a policy to steadily increase cigarette tax is likely to help achieve the government''s targets for smoking and smoking related diseases.  相似文献

Recent studies with Nile tilapia have shown divergent results regarding the possibility of selecting on morphometric measurements to promote indirect genetic gains in fillet yield (FY). The use of indirect selection for fillet traits is important as these traits are only measurable after harvesting. Random regression models are a powerful tool in association studies to identify the best time point to measure and select animals. Random regression models can also be applied in a multiple trait approach to analyze indirect response to selection, which would avoid the need to sacrifice candidate fish. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the genetic relationships between several body measurements, weight and fillet traits throughout the growth period and to evaluate the possibility of indirect selection for fillet traits in Nile tilapia. Data were collected from 2042 fish and was divided into two subsets. The first subset was used to estimate genetic parameters, including the permanent environmental effect for BW and body measurements (8758 records for each body measurement, as each fish was individually weighed and measured a maximum of six times). The second subset (2042 records for each trait) was used to estimate genetic correlations and heritabilities, which enabled the calculation of correlated response efficiencies between body measurements and the fillet traits. Heritability estimates across ages ranged from 0.05 to 0.5 for height, 0.02 to 0.48 for corrected length (CL), 0.05 to 0.68 for width, 0.08 to 0.57 for fillet weight (FW) and 0.12 to 0.42 for FY. All genetic correlation estimates between body measurements and FW were positive and strong (0.64 to 0.98). The estimates of genetic correlation between body measurements and FY were positive (except for CL at some ages), but weak to moderate (−0.08 to 0.68). These estimates resulted in strong and favorable correlated response efficiencies for FW and positive, but moderate for FY. These results indicate the possibility of achieving indirect genetic gains for FW and by selecting for morphometric traits, but low efficiency for FY when compared with direct selection.  相似文献

Two-dimensional electrophoresis, using isoelectric focusing in one dimension and electrophoresis in sodium dodecyl sulfate in the second, yields the highest resolution separation of proteins and protein subunits thus far obtained. For general research use, for genetic screening, and for clinical studies, it is important to be able to make these analyses easily, relatively rapidly, and reproducibly. This paper describes a device and methods for casting up to 20 isoelectric focusing gels in parallel, for running them in the same apparatus, and for recovering them in preparation for the second-dimension separations.  相似文献

The Henle-Koch postulates are reviewed in terms of their full validity in Koch's day and in light of subsequent developments. The changing guidelines developed for viral diseases, for viruses in relation to cancer and to chronic central nervous system infection, and for causative agents in chronic diseases are discussed chronologically. A set of guidelines for both acute infectious and chronic diseases is presented. The need for recognizing the role of the host and the spectrum of host responses, for sound biologic sense in evaluating causal roles of agents in disease, and for flexibility in adapting our guidelines to new knowledge are emphasized.  相似文献

Active mobilization of repaired flexor tendons requires sufficient suture strength. This study was designed to investigate the suitability of four newly developed and comparatively strong tendon sutures for flexor tendon repair with active digital mobilization. Fifty fresh flexor digitorum profundus tendons were randomly assigned to five groups and repaired using the Tang, cruciate, Robertson, Silfverskiold, and modified Kessler suture methods. The repaired tendons were subjected to mechanical testing in an Instron tensile machine to determine the 2-mm gap formation force, ultimate strength, elastic modulus, and energy to failure of the sutures. The 2-mm gap formation forces of the sutures were 43.0 N for the Tang, 37.4 N for the cruciate, 25.0 N for the Robertson, 32.3 N for the Silfverskiold, and 21.2 N for the modified Kessler methods. The ultimate strength of the sutures was 53.6 N for the Tang, 46.3 N for the cruciate, 41.6 N for the Robertson, 41.0 N for the Silfverskiold, and 24.7 N for the modified Kessler methods. Statistically, the gap formation force and ultimate strength were the highest in the Tang, higher in the cruciate, and the lowest for the Robertson and the modified Kessler methods. The elastic modulus of the repaired tendons, as represented by the linear slope of the force-displacement curve, was also statistically the largest in the Tang, larger in the cruciate, and lowest for the Robertson and modified Kessler methods. Energy to failure was statistically the largest in the Tang, higher in the cruciate, lower in the Silfverskiold and the Robertson, and the lowest for the modified Kessler methods. It was concluded that significant differences exist in mechanical properties of the newly developed tendon suture methods. Among the methods for tendon repair that were tested, the Tang and the cruciate sutures were the best candidates for flexor tendon repair in the hand with postoperative active mobilization because of their superior tensile strength, elastic properties, energy to failure, and reasonable operation time.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine taste difference thresholds for monosodium glutamate (MSG) and sodium chloride (NaCl) in pigtail macaques (Macaca nemestrina) and spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi). Using a two-bottle preference test of brief duration, three animals of each species were presented with four different reference concentrations of 50, 100, 200, and 400 mM of a tastant and tested for their ability to discriminate these from lower concentrations of the same tastant. The just noticeable differences (JNDs), expressed as Weber ratios (DeltaI/I), were found to range from 0.1 to 0.5 for MSG and 0.2 to 0.45 for NaCl in the pigtail macaques, with a significant tendency for higher Weber ratios with higher reference concentrations. In the spider monkeys, JNDs ranged from 0.15 to 0.4 for MSG and 0.1 to 0.25 for NaCl, with Weber ratios staying fairly constant across the reference concentrations tested. Thus, the JNDs were found to be generally similar in both species and to be at least as low as those found in humans for MSG and NaCl, as well as those found in spider monkeys for sucrose. The results support the assumption that both pigtail macaques and spider monkeys may use differences in perceived intensity of MSG and NaCl as a criterion for food selection.  相似文献

All the deaths attributed to coronary artery disease and occurring in Belfast during one year were studied.The frequency distributions of the cases by interval of time between onset of the last attack and death are given for those not admitted to hospital, for those admitted to hospital, and for those already in hospital for some other cause of illness.Sixty per cent. of all the deaths occurred outside hospital. This indicates that the problem of cardiac resuscitation in coronary artery disease is to a considerable extent an extra-hospital one.Twenty-seven per cent. of the men and 22% of the women died within 15 minutes, but the median period of survival was 3 hours 30 minutes for men and 6 hours 18 minutes for women.The median time interval from the onset of the attack to sending for medical aid was 1 hour 17 minutes for men and 1 hour 6 minutes for women, and from summoning medical aid to sending for the ambulance 59 minutes for men and 1 hour 26 minutes for women. Ninety-six per cent. of the ambulance journeys to the patient were accomplished in less than 20 minutes.It was found among men, but not among women, that the duration of survival tended to be longer in older patients and in second or subsequent attacks.Of the 596 who did not gain admission to hospital 229 (23% of all the 998 patients) were known to have survived for more than half an hour after the onset of the fatal attack; 182 (18%) survived for more than one hour; and 143 (14%) survived for more than two hours. It is among these that there would appear to be special scope for the cardiac ambulance, providing that medical aid is sought and the ambulance is summoned without delay.  相似文献

Soil and wastewater treatment sludge are commonly brought together in mixtures for a variety of beneficial purposes. The mixtures contain bioacidifying (i.e., sulfur-oxidizing) microorganisms that can easily be activated through providing the appropriate substrate and environmental conditions. In this study, contaminated soil and sludge mixtures were subjected to controlled bio-acidification and the impacts of the process on the partitioning of heavy metals, nitrogen, and phosphorus were examined. Three successive bio-acidification cycles resulted in significant leaching of metals from sludge. The leaching results, expressed as fraction of total mass of metals in the sludge, averaged 67% for Cr, 96% for Ni, 24% for Zn; 16% for Cu; 23% for Cd; and 96% for Pb. Bio-acidification of the sludge also converted 28 to 45% of the organic nitrogen into ammonia and increased the soluble orthophosphates fraction of total phosphorus by approximately 18 to 20%. Bio-acidification also resulted in significant metals leaching from the contaminated soils in the soil/sludge mixtures. Soil/sludge mixtures were prepared using six soil particle sizes (less than 0.075?mm to 2.38?mm) contaminated with 22,500?mg/kg Zn, 14,000?mg/kg Pb, 1500?mg/kg Cr, 9500?mg/kg Cu, 1000?mg/kg Ni, and 1000?mg/kg Cd. The addition of metals to the soil inhibited the sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms, preventing bio-acidification in the mixtures containing 4 to 50?g soil in 130?ml sludge, and considerably slowing bio-acidification in the mixtures containing 1 to 3?g soil. Using a mixture that contained 2-g soil samples, three successive bio-acidification cycles resulted in significant cumulative metals leaching results. The leaching results, expressed as percentage of the mass of metals added to the soil, were in the range of 56 to 98% for Cr, 77 to 95% for Zn, 33 to 66% for Ni, 64 to 82% for Cu, and 10 to 33% for Pb, with the higher results in each range belonging to the larger size soil particles. On the other hand, only Cr was leached in neutralized soil samples. The results confirmed the potential for inhibition of the sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms and bio-acidification in contaminated soil/sludge mixtures, and the significant impacts of bio-acidification on the mobility of metals, nitrogen, and phosphorus. In addition, the results confirmed the potential for using controlled bioacidification for removing heavy metals from contaminated soil using the indigenous sulfur oxidizing microorganisms in sludge.  相似文献

A total of 1922 first generation crossbred cows born between 2005 and 2012 produced by inseminating purebred Israeli Holstein cows with Norwegian Red semen, and 7487 purebred Israeli Holstein cows of the same age in the same 50 herds were analyzed for production, calving traits, fertility, calving diseases, body condition score, abortion rate and survival under intensive commercial management conditions. Holstein cows were higher than crossbreds for 305-day milk, fat and protein production. Differences were 764, 1244, 1231 for kg milk; 23.4, 37.4, 35.6 for kg fat, and 16.7, 29.8, 29.8 for kg protein; for parities 1 through 3. Differences for fat concentration were not significant; while crossbred cows were higher for protein concentration by 0.06% to 0.08%. Differences for somatic cells counts were not significant. Milk production persistency was higher for Holstein cows by 5, 8.3 and 8% in parities 1 through 3. Crossbred cows were higher for conception status by 3.1, 3.6 and 4.7% in parities 1 through 3. Rates of metritis for Holsteins were higher than the crossbred cows by 7.8, 4.6 and 3.4% in parities 1 to 3. Differences for incidence of abortion, dystocia, ketosis and milk fever were not significant. Holstein cows were lower than crossbred cows for body condition score for all three parities, with differences of 0.2 to 0.4 units. Contrary to comparisons in other countries, herd-life was higher for Holsteins by 79 days. A total of 6321 Holstein cows born between 2007 and 2011 were higher than 765 progeny of crossbred cows backcrossed to Israeli Holsteins of the same ages for milk, fat and protein production. Differences were 279, 537, 542 kg milk; 10.5, 17.7, 17.0 kg fat and 6.2, 12.9, 13.2 kg protein for parities 1 through 3. Differences for fat concentration were not significant, while backcross cows were higher for protein percentage by 0.02% to 0.04%. The differences for somatic cell score, conception rate, and calving diseases other than metritis, were not significant. Holstein cows were lower than backcross cows by 1.5% to 2.5% for conception status in parities 1 to 3 and lower for body condition score for parities 1 and 2, with differences in the range of 0.06 to 0.09 units. Culling rates were higher, and herd-life lower for the crossbred cows. The gains obtained in secondary traits for crossbred cows did not compensate for the major reduction in production.  相似文献

The response of stomata to changes in humidity for a single surface of an amphistomatous leaf was investigated in Xanthium strumarium and Vicia faba using gas exchange and direct observation of stomatal apertures. The stomatal response to humidity for a given surface was found to be the same whether or not the humidity for the opposite surface was changed concurrently. Stomata on the surface for which humidity was constant showed no response to changes in humidity for the opposite surface. Despite large changes in epidermal turgor on the surface for which humidity was changed, there was no change in epidermal turgor for the surface with constant humidity. Measurements of transpiration and epidermal turgor as functions of the mole fraction gradient of water between leaf and air were used to calculate a value for leaf hydraulic resistance. The results suggest that in these species, the mechanism for the stomatal response to humidity resides in the epidermis or the mesophyll very close to the epidermis, and that most of the hydraulic resistance of the leaf occurs between the xylem and the evaporating sites.  相似文献

Pollen identification and classification are important not only for palynologists, but also for systematists and ecologists. Because palynological methods for the identification of pollen in surface soil until now could resolve at best to the generic level, we have developed a molecular approach to species-level identification of Chenopodiaceae pollen in surface soils. Surface soil samples were collected in the central area of Junggar Desert Basin, Xinjiang, China. Fresh leaves of 19 Chenopodiaceae species were sampled for DNA sequencing, establishing a database of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA for Chenopodiaceae. Individual chenopod pollen grains in a soil sample were separated from the soil and the ITS1 region of each pollen grain was amplified using nested PCR and sequenced. By comparing the amplified ITS1 sequences to those in the Chenopodiaceous database, we identified the pollen in the soil samples to the level of species. The new method provides a technical reference for species identification of soil surface pollen for other families. This work is necessary for further efforts to interpret the relationship of surface soil pollen to vegetation characteristics. It also has significant potential for enhancing the ability to identify pollen in clinical airborne allergen or criminological studies.  相似文献

While regional indices are produced, with the exception of birds, studies of the differences between urban and rural areas are rare. We explore these differences for UK butterflies, with the intention to describe changes that are relevant to people living in urban areas, in order to better connect people with nature in support of conservation, provide a measure relevant to human well-being, and assess the biodiversity status of the urban environment.Transects walked under the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme are classified as urban or rural, using a classification for urban morphological zones. We use models from the Generalised Abundance Index family to produce urban and rural indices of relative abundance for UK butterfly species. Composite indices are constructed for various subsets of species. For univoltine and bivoltine species, where we are able to fit phenomenological models, we estimate measures of phenology and identify urban/rural differences. Trends in relative abundance over the period 1995–2014 are more negative in urban areas compared to rural areas for 25 out of 28 species. For the composite indices, all trends are negative, and they are significantly more negative for urban areas than for rural areas. Analysis of phenological parameters shows butterflies tend to emerge earlier in urban than in rural areas. In addition, some fly longer in urban than in rural areas, whereas in other cases the opposite is the case, and hypotheses are proposed to account for these features.Investigating new urban/rural indicators has revealed national declines that are stronger for urban areas. For continued monitoring, there is a need for an urban butterfly indicator, and for this to be evaluated and reported annually. We explain how this may be interpreted, and the relevance for other monitoring schemes. The results of this paper, including the phenological findings, shed new light on the potentially deleterious effects of urbanisation and climate change, which require suitable monitoring and reporting to support policy and management, for example of urban greenspaces and gardens.  相似文献
