The germination of seeds of three species of forage grasses, Lolium perenne, Festuca pratensis and Dactylis glomerata, was studied after storage for 3–5 years under five different storage conditions: in aluminium foil packets at —25°C, 0°C and laboratory temperature (c. 18°C), and in manilla paper packets at 0°C and laboratory temperature. With Lolium perenne and Festuca pratensis high germination values at 3 and 7 days were obtained from seed stored at — 25 °C and 0°C in foil packets (5% moisture), but at laboratory temperatures, seed from foil packets gave lower germination values than those from manilla paper packets. At all three temperatures Dactylis glomerata germination after 7 and 14 days was higher in seed stored in foil than in manilla packages. With all three species stored in manilla packets, germination was higher after laboratory than cold storage.  相似文献

The oviposition preferences of Oscinella frit, O. vastator, O. nitidissima, O. albiseta andO. nigerrima for differenct Gramineae were investigated in the laboratory. O. frit, laid most eggs on oats, Lolium multiflorum and Festuca rubra, relatively few eggs were laid on barley and virtually none on Dactylis glomerata None of the other Osinella species oviposted on cereals. Of the other species, O. vastator appeared to be the most polyphagous and the preferred hosts were L. multiflorum, Lolium perenne and Festuca pratensis; few eggs were laid on either F. rubra, Agrostis tenuis or Poa pratensis. The host ranges of the remaining species were much more limited. Although a few eggs were laid by O. nitidissima on Lolium, the preferred host was A. tenuis. Oscinella albiseta oviposited only on D. glomerata whilst nearly all the eggs laid by O. nigerrima were deposited on shoots of Arrhenatherum elatius. The distribution of eggs by O. frit on L. multiflorum and A. tenuis was different from that on oats; on grasses most eggs were laid inside withered leaf sheaths whereas on oats most were deposited inside the coleoptile. The oviposition sites of O. nitidissima, O. nigerrima and O. albiseta on their respective host grasses were similar to those of O. frit on grasses. O. frit laid most eggs on grasses which were at the five-leaf stage and tailoring.  相似文献

The role of sewage sludge as an immobilising agent in the phytostabilization of metal-contaminated soil was evaluated using five grass species viz., Dactylis glomerata L., Festuca arundinacea Schreb., F. rubra L., Lolium perenne L., L. westerwoldicum L. The function of metal immobilization was investigated by monitoring pH, Eh and Cd, Pb, and Zn levels in column experiment over a period of 5-months. Grasses grown on sewage sludge-amendments produced high biomass in comparison to controls. A significant reduction in metal uptake by plants was also observed as a result of sewage sludge application, which was attributed to decreased bioavailability through soil stabilisation. We have observed that the sludge amendment decreased metal bioavailability and concentrations in soil at a depth of 25 cm, in contrast to untreated columns, where metal concentrations in the soil solution were very high.  相似文献

Airborne pollen and spore levels were monitored at seven sites in New Zealand using the Intermittent Cycling Rotorod sampler during the summer of 1988/1989. Grasses formed the major component of atmospheric pollen levels during spring and summer at every locality. Peak levels of grass and total pollen occurred during December or late November, with a slight latitudinal lag apparent at the more southern sites. Highest levels were recorded at the smaller rural centres of Gore and Kaikohe and the lowest at the larger urban centres of Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. We make a first approximation of the likely risk to hayfever and allergic asthma patients at each of the seven centres. For example, significantly higher grass pollen levels were experienced at Kaikohe on 44% and 65% of days during November and December, compared with just 15% and 8% at Auckland. By recording the flowering seasons of the principal allergenic grass species at each locality, we determined the potentially allergenic grasses contributing to peak pollen levels, the most ubiquitous being tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.,L. multiflorum Lam.), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.), Yorkshire fog (Holcus lanatus L.) and sweet vernal (Anthoxanthum odoratum L.). Abstract Seven grass species were grown in monocultures and in multispecies mixtures along a gradient of total nutrient levels that ranged from 1/64 to 16× the normal level of nutrient solution. The seven grasses represented three ecological groups: (i) three perennial species native to Australia (Themeda triandra, Poa labillardieri and Danthonia carphoides); (ii) two introduced annuals (Vulpia bromoides and Hordeum leporinum); and (iii) two introduced perennials (Lolium perenne and Dactylis glomerata). We hypothesized that the native grasses would prove less competitive when grown at increased nutrient levels than those introduced from Europe. Results supported the hypothesis. The native species were unable to compete in mixtures even at the lowest nutrient level, where T. triandra was the most productive species in monoculture. Lolium perenne and Dactylis glomerata dominated mixtures at intermediate nutrient levels. The responses of the annual introduced grasses differed in that Vulpia bromoides showed an optimum at intermediate nutrient levels in both monoculture and in mixtures, whereas Hordeum leporinum dominated at the highest nutrient levels in mixture but was suppressed by V. bromoides, L. perenne and D. glomerata at intermediate levels. The results are discussed in terms of predicting species responses in mixtures from their performance in monocultures as well as in terms of previous observations on the sequential changes in botanical composition of south‐eastern Australian grasslands after 150 years of continuous grazing by sheep.  相似文献

Grasses (Poaceae) pollen is a major cause for allergic diseases worldwide. Pollen monitoring in the atmosphere is of primary importance for symptoms interpretation and therapy planning. Microscopic pollen identification and counts do not allow the detection at species or genus level because of the stenopalynous nature of the family. Nevertheless, the assessment of the flowering phenology of different species would be important, because not all grass allergens are cross-reacting and allergic patients could be differentially sensitized. In this work, a phenological survey was carried out in five stations located on the urban territory of Perugia (Central Italy), from April to September 2015, recording the alternation between flowering phenophases of 19 grass species and estimating their contribution to the airborne pollen load of the area through the calculation of a Phenological Index. Moreover, pollen grains of the different species were collected and observed, confirming the impossibility to make a discrimination during microscope pollen counts. The prevailing grasses in terms of contribution to the pollen detection in the studied area resulted to be Dactylis glomerata and Lolium perenne during spring and early summer, and Cynodon dactylon during late summer. Data should be validated repeating the survey in successive years and possibly using biomolecular tools, but the obtained information could be relevant for diagnosis and treatment of grass pollen allergies.  相似文献

We tested whether the host species identity in grass-Epichloë symbioses affected soil chemical and microbial properties. We grew endophyte infected (E+) and endophyte free (E−) Lolium perenne, Hordeum brevisubulatum and Achnatherum inebrians for 18 months in field plots. In E+ soil of all three grasses, available phosphorus was lower whereas total soil nitrogen was higher. Endophyte effects on soil pH, microbial biomass nitrogen, total carbon and organic carbon as well as bacteria and fungi abundance were host species dependent. Ammonia oxidizing bacteria abundance was higher in E+ soils for all species. Bacterial community composition of E+ and E− soils were different only for Lolium perenne with soil pH being the key factor. Fungal community composition of E+ and E− soils was not different for the three grasses. This study confirmed that the effects of foliar Epichloë infection on belowground properties depended on host species identity.  相似文献

Resistance to low temperature is crucial for overwintering crops. In this work we compared the resistance to low temperature treatment of some varieties of two forage grass species Dactylis glomerata L. and Lolium perenne L. in order to elucidate the reason for the better resistance found in some species. The variety Amila of D. glomerata and Diament of L. perenne were more tolerant to low temperature stress during the emergence and tillering phases as compared to the varieties Amera and Gagat. The improved tolerance and ability for recovery after stress were associated with the better recovery of photosynthetic efficiency of these varieties and better survival of their shoots after low temperature stress.  相似文献

Plants ofLolium perenneandFestuca rubrawere grown in sand culturereceiving all nutrients as a complete nutrient solution containing1.5 mMNH4NO3, and subjected to one of three defoliation treatments:undefoliated, defoliated on one occasion, or defoliated weekly.15Nlabelling was used to determine the rate of N uptake, allowingthe amount of N remobilized from storage for the growth of thetwo youngest leaves (subsequently referred to as ‘newleaves’) growing over a 14 d period after defoliationto be calculated. The total plant N uptake by both species wasreduced, compared with undefoliated plants, by both a singleand repeated defoliation, although neither caused complete inhibitionof uptake. Regularly defoliatedL. perennehad a greater reductionin root mass, concomitant with a greater increase in N uptakeper g root than did regularly defoliatedF. rubra. In both species,the amount of N derived from uptake recovered in the new leaveswas unaffected by the frequency of defoliation. BothL. perenneandF.rubramobilized nitrogen to the new leaves after a single defoliation,mobilization being sufficient to supply 50 and 41%, respectively,of the total nitrogen requirement. In regularly defoliated plants,no significant nitrogen was mobilized to the new leaves inL.perenne, and only a small amount was mobilized inF. rubra. Plantsachieved greater leaf regrowth when only defoliated once. Weconclude that increasing the frequency of defoliation of bothL.perenneandF. rubrahad little effect on the uptake of nitrogenby roots which was subsequently supplied to new leaves, butdepleted their capacity for nitrogen remobilization, resultingin a reduction in the rate of growth of new leaves. Grasslands can be a complex mixture of plant species. A method is described to allow the identification of both roots and shoots of five different grass species, thus permitting greater knowledge about whole plant allocation and competition in mixed pastures. The five species were Lolium perenne, Festuca ovina, Festuca rubra, Poa trivialis and Agrostis capillaris. N‐alkanes with odd‐numbers of carbon atoms in the chains predominate in plants and in the five grass species studied, concentrations of alkanes of chain length of C29, C31 and C33 were highest. Average concentrations of C27‐C33 alkanes in shoots and roots were 187 and 11 mg kg ? 1, respectively. This wide range of values required considerable modifications to the method of analysis, including expressing concentrations on an organic matter basis and scaling‐down the procedure. The n‐alkane concentrations in roots are different from those in shoots and therefore values from shoots cannot be used to predict the composition in roots. Using a canonical variate analysis, all five grass species could be separated using concentrations of C26, C31 and C33 values in the roots. The greatest difference occurred between A. capillaris and the others, whereas discrimination was least between the two Festuca species. Defoliation had contrasting effects on the concentration of a few n‐alkanes, but not in the n‐alkanes used to discriminate between grass species. Alkane analysis shows great potential as a method to quantify the species composition of the root biomass beneath mixed pasture species.  相似文献

Food Preference of Wireworms Analyzed with Multinomial Logit Models   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Many species of wireworms (larvae of click beetles, Elateridae) are poly- phagous root herbivores. In grasslands under restoration succession with various grass species, we aim to determine the role of wireworms in aboveground vegetation succession. Therefore, it is crucial to know whether wireworms prefer some food plants to others. We have investigated the root preference to different grass species for Agriotes obscurus and Athous haemorrhoidalis and whether these preferences can be explained by covariates. In Experiment 1, individual wireworms could choose between four different plants, one of each species (Anthoxanthum odoratum, Festuca rubra, Holcus lanatus, and Lolium perenne). In Experiment 2, groups of wireworms were released into the soil in the center of 16 plants (4 from each species). We used multinomial logit models (MLMs) to analze the data. In the appendix the use of multinomial response models is clarified with a fictitious example, using the SAS statistic software package. No preference was found in Experiment 1. In Experiment 2 we found differences in attractiveness of plant species depending on wireworm species: A. obscurus preferred grass species from nutrient-rich grasslands (L. perenne and H. lanatus). Both wireworm species disliked F. rubra. The distance from the release point influenced the probability of being found at a certain place at the end of the experiment: wireworms tended to stay in the proximity of the release point. A. haemorrhoidalis was more often found farther from the point of release than A. obscurus. Dispersal was farther from the release point in experiments with young plants (6 weeks) compared to older ones (9 weeks). Results are discussed in a broad ecological context.  相似文献

Understanding the determinants of early invasion resistance is a major challenge for designing plant communities that efficiently repel invaders. Recent evidence highlighted the significant role of priority effects in early community assembly as they affect species composition, structure and functional properties, but the consequences of native community assembly history on the success of subsequent invasions has not been elucidated yet. In a greenhouse experiment, we investigated how (1) the identity of the first native colonizing species (one of two grasses: Dactylis glomerata and Lolium perenne, or two legumes: Onobrychis viciifolia and Trifolium repens), each introduced four weeks before the rest of the native community, and (2) timing of species establishment (synchronous vs. sequential sowing), influenced early establishment success of Ambrosia artemisiifolia, an annual noxious weed in Europe. First colonizer identity and establishment timing both affected early biomass production and composition of the community, and had implications for A. artemisiifolia early invasion success. Invasion success decreased when all native individuals were sown simultaneously, quickly generating a high biomass production, while it increased when the productive N-fixing legume T. repens was sown first. These findings support that native species assembly history matters to invasion resistance in the early growth stages, thus opening the way to more effective invasive species management strategies in restoration.  相似文献

The leaf construction cost, i.e., the energy expenditure required for the production of plant biomass (CC, g glucose/g dry biomass), is considered to be a major determinant of species success in various habitats. Nitrogen, carbon, and mineral contents in leaves were used to measure leaf CC. The aboveground biomass was sampled from the most abundant plant species (Poa pratensis L., Lolium perenne L., Festuca valida (Uechtr.) Penzes, Trifolium repens L., Taraxacum officinale Weber ex Wigg, Plantago lanceolata L., and Achillea millefolium L.) during the 1997 growing season in an upland grassland dominated by C3 species. Soil samplings were performed in parallel with leaf samplings in order to determine soil inorganic nitrogen. T. repens leaves had the highest nitrogen concentration; grasses had the highest carbon content, while the highest mineral content was observed in the leaves of the forb species. The highest leaf CC was calculated for the legume T. repens followed by the grass F. valida. The grass L. perenne had the cheapest leaves, since it had the lowest CC. A positive correlation between leaf CC and soil inorganic nitrogen was evident for grasses (P. pratensis, L. perenne, F. valida) and P. lanceolata.  相似文献

Selected NaCl tolerant and unselected control lines ofHolcus lanatus L.,Lolium perenne L.,Dactylis glomerata L., andFestuca rubra L. were grown in sand culture at 0, 100, 200, 250, and/or 300 ml m-3NaCl for seven weeks. The tolerant lines of all four species produced significantly greater both shoot and root dry matter at all NaCl treatments compared with the unselected control lines. Na+, K+, Cl-, Ca2+, and Mg2+ contents of leaf, stalk, and roots of each species were determined. The tolerant lines ofH. lanatus contained less Na+ and less Ca2+ but higher K+ in shoots, compared with the unselected line. By contrast theL. perenne tolerant line had higher Na+ and Cl- contents at 250, and 300 mol m-3 NaCl in shoots than the unselected line suggesting a halophytic nature of the tolerant line.D. glomerata accumulated greater quantities of ions compared with the other species examined. The tolerant line contained significantly less Cl- but more K+ in its shoots than the unselected line. Na+, Cl-, and K+ contents in the shoots of the tolerant line ofF.rubra were higher than in the unselected line shoots. Therefore selection for NaCl tolerance may provide useful material for examining the basis of tolerance.  相似文献

Fouragriculturally important grasses, Lolium perenne L., Loliummultiflorum Lam., Dactylis glomerata L. and Phleum pratenseL. were exposed to sulphur dioxide (SO2) in a system of exposurechambers. The plants were exposed for a total of 43 d to meanconcentrations of SO2 in the air of 0,87 or 448 (µg m–3and herbage was harvested twice. All four grasses showed chloroticlesions after exposure to the highest concentration of SO2.The effect of SO2 on the yield of herbage was statisticallysignificant only at the second harvest and at the highest concentration;the dry weights of shoots of D. glomerata and L. perenne werereduced by 33% and 16% respectively. Significant effects ofSO2 were also found on the 'transpiration coefficients' measuredfor D. glomerata and P. pratense. The grasses differed in theiruptake of sulphur from the atmosphere but this was not relatedto their sensitivity to SO2. Total–S concentration inthe shoots of L. perenne, L. multiflorum and D. glomerata increasedalmost linearly in response to increasing SO2 concentration;with P. pratense only the highest SO2 concentration raised total-Sabove the level in control plants. In controlled temperature, light and relative humidity, Metopolophium dirhodum and Sitobion avenae multiplied more on young Proctor barley than on Blenda oats, and less on Cappelle wheat. Rhopalosiphum padi increased in number fastest on barley and slowest on oats. More survived, and generation lengths seemed shorter, on barley for M. dirhodum and S. avenae and on wheat for R. padi. Tests with young cereals outdoors generally agreed with those in controlled conditions. On mature plants, there were more M. dirhodum on barley, more R. padi on wheat and more S. avenae on oats than on the other cereals. Given a free choice in large cages outdoors, most aphids were found on barley. When allowed to choose between grasses, more M. dirhodum were on Dactylis glomerata, Poa pratensis and Festuca pratensis, more R. padi on Lolium perenne and F. pratensis, and more S. avenae on D. glomerata and L. perenne. Most aphids of all species combined were on F. pratensis, Lolium and Phleum, and fewest on Festuca rubra and Holcus mollis.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The herbivore defence system of true grasses (Poaceae) is predominantly based on silicon that is taken up from the soil and deposited in the leaves in the form of abrasive phytoliths. Silicon uptake mechanisms can be both passive and active, with the latter suggesting that there is an energetic cost to silicon uptake. This study assessed the effects of plant-available soil silicon and herbivory on the competitive interactions between the grasses Poa annua, a species that has previously been reported to accumulate only small amounts of silicon, and Lolium perenne, a high silicon accumulator.

Methods

Plants were grown in mono- and mixed cultures under greenhouse conditions. Plant-available soil silicon levels were manipulated by adding silicon to the soil in the form of sodium silicate. Subsets of mixed culture pots were exposed to above-ground herbivory by desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria).

Key Results

In the absence of herbivory, silicon addition increased biomass of P. annua but decreased biomass of L. perenne. Silicon addition increased foliar silicon concentrations of both grass species >4-fold. Under low soil-silicon availability the herbivores removed more leaf biomass from L. perenne than from P. annua, whereas under high silicon availability the reverse was true. Consequently, herbivory shifted the competitive balance between the two grass species, with the outcome depending on the availability of soil silicon.

Conclusions

It is concluded that a complex interplay between herbivore abundance, growth–defence trade-offs and the availability of soil silicon in the grasses'' local environment affects the outcome of inter-specific competition, and so has the potential to impact on plant community structure.  相似文献

Nitrogen-limited ecosystems are threatened by extensive spread of broom (Cytisus scoparius (L.) Link), a European leguminous shrub that is invasive in several countries. The establishment of invading species may, however, be suppressed by competition from native vegetation. The neighbor impact of the grass Festuca rubra subsp. commutata Gaudin on the performance of C. scoparius was studied in a greenhouse experiment with different arrival order, under low and high nitrogen supply, and with or without inoculation of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Aboveground biomass of both species was measured after a six-months establishment period, and after a five-months regrowth period. In both periods, presence of F. rubra reduced the performance of C. scoparius as indicated by negative neighbor-effect intensity indices (NIntA).During the establishment period the competitive impact of F. rubra was highest, when planted before C. scoparius, followed by synchronous and late planting. Inoculation with rhizobia and low fertilization decreased the competitive impact of F. rubra. After cutting and regrowth priority effects of F. rubra were still visible. Interaction between the two study species was not affected anymore by inoculation, but strongly by fertilization, with highest competitive impact of F. rubra on C. scoparius under high nitrogen fertilization. In both study periods biomass of C. scoparius was negatively correlated with biomass of F. rubra. Our study provides knowledge about competition processes, which help to improve conservation and restoration measures regarding the spread of C. scoparius. Early sowing of a native grass can help to suppress the invasive species at an early stage. Competitive impact of the grass might be strengthened by high nitrogen availability.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Previous studies have shown that silica in grass leaves defends them against small herbivores, which avoid high-silica grasses and digest them less efficiently. This study tested the idea that silica can reduce digestibility by preventing the mechanical breakdown of chlorenchyma cells.

Methods

Both the percentage of total chlorophyll liberated from high- and low-silica grass leaves by mechanical grinding and the chlorophyll content of locust faeces were measured.

Key Results

High-silica grasses released less chlorophyll after grinding and retained more after passing through the gut of locusts, showing that silica levels correlated with increased mechanical protection.

Conclusions

These results suggest that silica may defend grasses at least in part by reducing mechanical breakdown of the leaf, and that mechanical protection of resources in chlorenchyma cells is a novel and potentially important mechanism by which silica protects grasses.Key words: Grass, silica, locust, digestibility, defence, Lolium perenne, Festuca ovina  相似文献

Extension of the vegetative growth phase through delay of flowering is an important goal in today's breeding programs of both forage and turf grasses. In forage grasses, the stem and inflorescence production comprise a significant reduction in the digestibility, nutritional value and productivity of the crop, and in turf grasses the stems that start to emerge during the growth season suppress the formation of new shoots and affect the quality, density and persistence of the sward. We have tested the potential of the strong floral repressor LpTFL1 from perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) to manipulate the transition to flowering in red fescue (Festuca rubra L.), a cool-season turf grass. Expression of LpTFL1 from the constitutive maize ubiquitin promoter represses flowering in red fescue, and the flowering repression phenotype correlates well with the level of LpTFL expression. Transgenic lines showing low to intermediate expression of LpTFL1 flowered approximately two weeks later than the controls, and transgenic lines showing very high LpTFL1 expression levels still remained non-flowering after exposure to natural vernalization conditions (Danish winter) in two successive years. There were no other phenotypic effects associated with the LpTFL transgene expression during vegetative growth. However, there was a tendency towards an LpTFL1-mediated reduction in stem length among the flowering lines. Expression of a truncated LpTFL, caused by transgene rearrangements during the transformation, lead to increased flowering and stem production and a decrease in panicle size. This is to our knowledge the first report on full inhibition of floral development in a commercially important grass species.  相似文献
