Although degradation mechanisms in organic photovoltaic devices continue to receive increased attention, it is only recently that the initial light‐induced failure, or so‐called burn‐in effect, has been considered. Both prototypical polythiophene:fullerene and polycarbazole:fullerene systems exhibit an exponential performance loss of ≈40% upon 150 h of continuous solar illumination. While the decrease in both the short‐circuit current (JSC) and open‐circuit voltage (VOC) is the origin of performance loss in poly(3‐hexylthiophene):[6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PC60BM), in poly(N‐9′‐hepta‐decanyl‐2,7‐carbazole‐alt‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐2′,1′,3′‐benzothiadiazole)):[6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCDTBT:PC70BM) the decline of the fill factor dominates. By systematic variation of the interface layers, active layer thickness, and acceptor in polythiophene:fullerene cells, the loss in JSC is ascribed to a degradation in the bulk of the P3HT:PC60BM, while the drop in VOC is reversible and arises from charge trapping at the contact interfaces. By replacing the C60 fullerene derivative with a C70 derivative, or by modifying the electron transport layer, the JSC or VOC, respectively, are stabilized. These insights prove that the burn‐in process stems from multiple concurrent failure mechanisms. Comparing the ageing and recovery processes in P3HT and PCDTBT blends results in the conclusion that their interface failures differ in nature and that burn‐in is a material dependent, rather than an intrinsic, failure mechanism.  相似文献

Organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells require energetic offsets between the donor and acceptor to obtain high short‐circuit currents (JSC) and fill factors (FF). However, it is necessary to reduce the energetic offsets to achieve high open‐circuit voltages (VOC). Recently, reports have highlighted BHJ blends that are pushing at the accepted limits of energetic offsets necessary for high efficiency. Unfortunately, most of these BHJs have modest FF values. How the energetic offset impacts the solar cell characteristics thus remains poorly understood. Here, a comprehensive characterization of the losses in a polymer:fullerene BHJ blend, PIPCP:phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM), that achieves a high VOC (0.9 V) with very low energy losses (Eloss = 0.52 eV) from the energy of absorbed photons, a respectable JSC (13 mA cm?2), but a limited FF (54%) is reported. Despite the low energetic offset, the system does not suffer from field‐dependent generation and instead it is characterized by very fast nongeminate recombination and the presence of shallow traps. The charge‐carrier losses are attributed to suboptimal morphology due to high miscibility between PIPCP and PC61BM. These results hold promise that given the appropriate morphology, the JSC, VOC, and FF can all be improved, even with very low energetic offsets.  相似文献

Newly developed benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) block with 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) side chains is first employed to build efficient photovoltaic copolymers. The resulting copolymers, PBDTEDOT‐BT and PBDTEDOTFBT, have a large bandgap more than 1.80 eV, which is attributed to the increased steric hindrance between the BDT and EDOT skeletons. Both copolymers possess the satisfied absorptions, low‐lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels and high crystallinity. Using the fluorination strategy, PBDTEDOT‐FBT exhibits a wider and stronger absorption and a deeper HOMO level than those of PBDTEDOT‐BT. PBDTEDOT‐FBT:[6,6]‐Phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) blend also shows the higher hole mobility and better surface morphology compared with the PBDTEDOTBT:PC71BM blend. Combination of above advantages, PBDTEDOT‐FBT devices exhibit much higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.11%, with an improved open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.86 V, short circuit current densities (Jsc) of 16.01 mA cm?2, and fill factor (FF) of 72.6%. This work not only provides a newly efficient candidate of BDT donor block modified with EDOT conjugated side chains, but also achieves high‐performance large bandgap copolymers for polymer solar cells (PSCs) via the synergistic effect of fluorination and side chain engineering strategies.  相似文献

The morphology, photophysics, and device performance of solar cells based on the low bandgap polymer poly[[2,6′‐4,8‐di(5‐ethylhexylthienyl)benzo[1,2‐b;3,3‐b]dithiophene]3‐fluoro‐2[(2‐ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4‐b]thiophenediyl (PBDTTT‐EFT) (also known as PTB7‐Th) blended with different fullerene acceptors: Phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM), phenyl‐C71 ‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), or indene‐C60 bisadduct (ICBA) are correlated. Compared to PC71 BM‐based cells – which achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.4% – cells using ICBA achieve a higher open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.0 V albeit with a lower PCE of 7.1%. To understand the origin of this lower PCE, the morphology and photophysics have been thoroughly characterized. Hard and soft X‐ray scattering measurements reveal that the PBDTTT‐EFT:ICBA blend has a lower crystallinity, lower domain purity, and smaller domain size compared to the PBDTTT‐EFT:PC71BM blend. Incomplete photoluminescence quenching is also found in the ICBA blend with transient absorption measurements showing faster recombination dynamics at short timescales. Transient photovoltage measurements highlight further differences in recombination at longer timeframes due to the more intermixed morphology of the ICBA blend. Interestingly, a mild thermal treatment improves the performance of PBDTTT‐EFT:ICBA cells which is exploited in the fabrication of a homo PBDTTT‐EFT:ICBA tandem solar cell with PCE of 9.0% and VOC of 1.93 V.  相似文献

A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.2% is achieved in PM6:BTP‐4F‐12 based organic photovoltaics (OPVs). On the basis of efficient binary OPVs, a series of ternary OPVs are constructed by incorporating MeIC as the third component. The open circuit voltages (VOCs) of ternary OPVs can be gradually increased along with the incorporation of MeIC, suggesting the formation of an alloy state between BTP‐4F‐12 and MeIC with good compatibility. The energy loss (Eloss) of ternary OPVs can be decreased compared with that of two binary OPVs, contributing to the VOC improvement of ternary OPVs. The short circuit current density (JSC) and fill factor (FF) of ternary OPVs can also be simultaneously enhanced with MeIC content up to 10 wt% in acceptors, leading to 17.4% PCE of the optimized ternary OPVs. The JSC and FF improvement of ternary OPVs is thought to result from the optimized ternary active layers with more efficient photon harvesting, exciton dissociation and charge transport. The 17.4% PCE and 79.2% FF is among the top values of ternary OPVs. This work indicates that a ternary strategy is an emerging method to simultaneously minimize Eloss and optimize photon harvesting as well as improve the morphology of active layers for realizing performance improvement for OPVs.  相似文献

The role of work function and thermodynamic selectivity of hole collecting contacts on the origin of open circuit voltage (VOC) in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics is examined for poly(N‐9′‐heptadecanyl‐2,7‐carbazole‐alt‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐2′,1′,3′‐benzothiadiazole) (PCDTBT) and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) solar cells. In the absence of a charge selective, electron blocking contact, systematic variation of the work function of the contact directly dictates the VOC, as defined by the energetic separation between the relative Fermi levels for holes and electrons, with little change in the observed dark saturation current, J0. Improving the charge selectivity of the contact through an increased barrier to electron injection from the fullerene in the blend into the hole contact results in a decreased reverse saturation current (decreased J0 and increased shunt resistance, RSH) and improved VOC. Based on these observations, we provide a set of contact design criteria for tuning the VOC in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics.  相似文献

Ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) are among the best‐performing organic photovoltaic devices to date, largely due to the recent development of nonfullerene acceptors. However, fullerene molecules still play an important role in ternary OSC systems, since, for reasons not well understood, they often improve the device performance, despite their lack of absorption. Here, the photophysics of a prototypical ternary small‐molecule OSC blend composed of the donor DR3, the nonfullerene acceptor ICC6, and the fullerene derivative PC71BM is studied by ultrafast spectroscopy. Surprisingly, it is found that after excitation of PC71BM, ultrafast singlet energy transfer to ICC6 competes efficiently with charge transfer. Subsequently, singlets on ICC6 undergo hole transfer to DR3, resulting in free charge generation. Interestingly, PC71BM improves indirectly the electron mobility of the ternary blend, while electrons reside predominantly in ICC6 domains as indicated by fast spectroscopy. The improved mobility facilitates charge carrier extraction, in turn leading to higher device efficiencies of the ternary compared to binary solar cells. Using the (photo)physical parameters obtained from (transient) spectroscopy and charge transport measurements, the device's current–voltage characteristics are simulated and it is demonstrated that the parameters accurately reproduce the experimentally measured device performance.  相似文献

“The Same‐Acceptor‐Strategy” (SAS) adopts benzotriazole (BTA)‐based p‐type polymers paired with a new BTA based non‐fullerene acceptor BTA13 to minimize the trade‐off between the open‐circuit voltage (VOC) and short circuit current (JSC). The fluorination and sulfuration are introduced to lower the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) of the polymers. The fluorinated polymer of J52‐F shows the higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.36% than the analog polymer of J52, benefited from a good balance between an improved VOC of 1.18 V and a JSC of 11.55 mA cm?2. Further adding alkylthio groups on J52‐F, the resulted polymer, J52‐FS, exhibits the highest VOC of 1.24 V with a decreased energy loss of 0.48 eV, compared with 0.67 eV for J52 and 0.54 eV for J52‐F. However, J52‐FS shows an inferior PCE (3.84%) with a lower JSC of 6.74 mA cm?2, because the small ΔEHOMO between J52‐FS and BTA13 (0.02 eV) gives rise to the inefficient hole transfer and high charge recombination, as well as low carrier mobilities. The results of this study clearly demonstrate that the introduction of different atoms in p‐type polymers is effective to improve the SAS and realize the high (VOC) and PCE.  相似文献

Two small molecule donor materials (DTGe(FBTTh2)2 and DTGe(FBTBFu)2) incorporating the dithienogermole (DTGe) moiety with fluorobenzothiadiazole (FBT) and bithiophene (Th2) or benzofuran (BFu) end‐capping groups are synthesized and their properties as donor materials in small molecule bulk heterojunction type (BHJ) solar cells are investigated. The DTGe(FBTTh2)2 with Th2 end groups shows outstanding solar cell characteristics with efficiencies up to 6.4% using a standard BHJ architecture and 7.3% using a ZnO optical spacer, while the BFu end‐capped DTGe(FBTBFu)2 has slightly wider band gaps and yields slightly higher open circuit voltage (VOC) at the expense of short circuit current (JSC) and fill factor (FF). In this study, the DTGe‐based molecules are systematically compared to the dithienosilole (DTSi)‐based analogues, which are currently among the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) small molecule solar cell donor materials known. The JSC produced by the DTGe molecule is found to be similar to, or slightly higher than the Si analogue, despite similar absorption characteristics, however, the PCE is similar to the Si analogues due to small decreases in VOC and FF. This report marks the first small molecule BHJ based on a Ge‐containing heterocycle with PCE over 7%.  相似文献

Organic solar cells (OSCs) are promising low‐cost devices for generating electricity. In addition to fill factor, the short circuit current density (JSC) and the open circuit voltage (VOC) are two key factors that have critical influence on the device performance. The energy levels of the donor and acceptor materials are crucial for achieving a high JSC and VOC. However, the interfacial structures between the organic materials substantially affect the JSC and VOC through the energy of the charge transfer (CT) states and the charge separation and recombination reaction kinetics. Here, it is reported that separating the donor and acceptor layer in bilayer OSCs with a thin insulating layer increases the energy of the CT state by weakening the Coulomb interaction at the interface and this also suppresses photoinduced CT and recombination. Although these effects usually increase VOC and decrease JSC, the trade‐off is avoided by doping the insulating layer with a dye to utilize the energy transfer process. The increase in VOC without the reduction in JSC enhances the conversion efficiency of the OSCs by 30%.  相似文献

A series of four polymers containing benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) and 5,6‐difluoro‐4,7‐diiodobenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (2FBT), PBDT2FBT, PBDT2FBT‐O, PBDT2FBT‐T, and PBDT2FBT‐T‐O, are synthesized with their four different side chains, alkyl‐, alkoxy‐, alkylthienyl‐, and alkoxythienyl. Experimental results and theoretical calculations show that the molecular tuning of the side chains simultaneously influences the solubilities, energy levels, light absorption, surface tension, and intermolecular packing of the resulting polymers by altering their molecular coplanarity and electron affinity. The polymer solar cell (PSC) based on a blend of PBDT2FBT‐T/[6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) exhibits the best photovoltaic performance of the four PBDT2FBT derivatives, with a high open‐circuit voltage of 0.98 V and a power conversion efficiency of 6.37%, without any processing additives, post‐treatments, or optical spacers. Furthermore, PBDT2FBT‐T‐O, which has a novel side chain alkoxythienyl, showed promising properties with the most red‐shifted absorption and strong intermolecular packing property in solid state. This study provides insight into molecular design and fabrication strategies via structural tuning of the side chains of conjugated polymers for achieving highly efficient PSCs.  相似文献

In this study, a wavelength selective semitransparent polymer solar cell (ST‐PSC) with a proper transmission spectrum for plant growth is proposed for greenhouse applications. A ternary strategy combining a wide bandgap polymer donor with a near‐infrared absorbing nonfullerene acceptor and a high electron mobility fullerene acceptor is introduced to achieve PSCs with power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 10%. The addition of PC71BM into J52:IEICO‐4F binary blend contributes to the suppressed trap‐assisted recombination, enhanced charge extraction, and improved open‐circuit voltage simultaneously. ST‐PSC based on the J52:IEICO‐4F:PC71BM ternary blend shows an optimized performance with PCE of 7.75% and a defined crop growth factor of 24.8%. Such high‐performance ST‐PSC is achieved by carefully engineering the absorption spectrum of the light harvesting materials. As a result, the transmission spectra of the semitransparent devices are well‐matched with the absorption spectra of the photoreceptors, such as chlorophylls, in green plants, which provides adequate lighting conditions for photosynthesis and plant growth, and therefore making it a competitive candidate for photovoltaic greenhouse applications.  相似文献

Efficient vacuum‐deposited tandem organic photovoltaic cells (TOPVs) composed of pristine fullerenes as the acceptors and two complementary absorbing donors, 2‐((2‐(5‐(4‐(diphenylamino)phenyl)thieno[3,2‐b]thiophen‐2‐yl)thiazol‐5‐yl)methylene)malononitrile for the visible absorption and 2‐((7‐(5‐(dip‐tolylamino)thiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c]‐[1,2,5]thiadiazol‐4‐yl)methylene)malononitrile for the near‐infrared absorption, are reported. Two subcells are connected by the interconnection unit (ICU) composed of electron‐transporting layer/metal/p‐doped hole‐transporting layer. The p‐doped layer in the ICU enables increasing the short‐circuit current density (J SC) of TOPVs by tuning the relative position of subcells in the tandem devices to have the maximum optical field distribution response, which is well matched with theoretical calculation. Moreover, the introduction of the doped layer benefits to the higher fill factor (FF) of the consisting subcells without losing open‐circuit voltage (V OC) even with the thick active layers. As a result, power conversion efficiency of 9.2% is achieved with higher FF of 0.62 than that of single‐junction subcells (0.54, 0.57), J SC of 8.7 mA cm?2, and V OC of 1.71 V using 80 nm thick active layers in both subcells.  相似文献

Performance losses and aging mechanisms are investigated in state‐of‐the‐art PTB7:PC70BM solar cells. Inverted devices incorporating a vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) top contact have efficiencies of 8%. After aging the unencapsulated devices, no changes are observed in the open circuit voltage (Voc) or short circuit current (Jsc); however, the fill factor (FF) drops from 0.7 to 0.61. An s‐shape initially appears in the JV curve after aging, which can be reduced by cycling through the JV curve under illumination. This is discussed in context of the redox properties of V2O5. With impedance spectroscopy, it is demonstrated that changes to the contact interfaces are completely reversible and not responsible for the performance loss. Intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy combined with device modeling reveals that the loss in FF is due to trap formation in the active layer. Additionally it is observed that the performance of pristine devices is limited by optical absorption in the thin active layer and the build‐up of space charge which hinders carrier extraction.  相似文献

A tandem organic solar cell (OSC) is a valid structure to widen the photon response range and suppress the transmission loss and thermalization loss. In the past few years, the development of low‐bandgap materials with broad absorption in long‐wavelength region for back subcells has attracted considerable attention. However, wide‐bandgap materials for front cells that have both high short‐circuit current density (JSC) and open‐circuit voltage (VOC) are scarce. In this work, a new fluorine‐substituted wide‐bandgap small molecule nonfullerene acceptor TfIF‐4FIC is reported, which has an optical bandgap of 1.61 eV. When PBDB‐T‐2F is selected as the donor, the device offers an extremely high VOC of 0.98 V, a high JSC of 17.6 mA cm?2, and a power conversion efficiency of 13.1%. This is the best performing acceptor with such a wide bandgap. More importantly, the energy loss in this combination is 0.63 eV. These properties ensure that PBDB‐T‐2F:TfIF‐4FIC is an ideal candidate for the fabrication of tandem OSCs. When PBDB‐T‐2F:TfIF‐4FIC and PTB7‐Th:PCDTBT:IEICO‐4F are used as the front cell and the back cell to construct tandem solar cells, a PCE of 15% is obtained, which is one of best results reported to date in the field of organic solar cells.  相似文献

The origin of open‐circuit voltage (VOC) was studied for polymer solar cells based on a blend of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and seven fullerene derivatives with different LUMO energy levels and side chains. The temperature dependence of JV characteristics was analyzed by an equivalent circuit model. As a result, VOC increased with the decrease in the saturation current density J0 of the device. Furthermore, J0 was dependent on the activation energy EA for J0, which is related to the HOMO–LUMO energy gap between P3HT and fullerene. Interestingly, the pre‐exponential term J00 for J0 was larger for pristine fullerenes than for substituted fullerene derivatives, suggesting that the electronic coupling between molecules also has substantial impact on VOC. This is probably because the recombination is non‐diffusion‐lmilited reaction depending on electron transfer at the P3HT/fullerene interface. In summary, the origin of VOC is ascribed not only to the relative HOMO–LUMO energy gap but also to the electronic couplings between fullerene/fullerene and polymer/fullerene.  相似文献

An aromatic lactam acceptor unit, thieno[3,2‐c]isoquinolin‐5(4H)‐one (TIQ), is developed. Compared with its analogues, dithieno[3,2‐b:2′,3′‐d]pyridin‐5(4H)‐one (DTP) and phenanthridin‐6(5H)‐one (PN), TIQ shows its advantage in constructing donor–acceptor (D–A) copolymers for efficient solar cells. TIQ‐based D–A copolymer PTIQ4TFBT delivers a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.16% in polymer:fullerene solar cells, while those based on DTP and PN copolymers, PDTP4TFBT and PPN4TFBT, afford PCEs around 8.5%. The higher performance of PTIQ4TFBT:PC71BM solar cells originates from enhanced short‐circuit current density (Jsc) and fill factor (FF), because of favorable morphology, less bimolecular recombination, and balanced charge transport in the active layer. Moreover, the performance for PTIQ4TFBT:PC71BM solar cells is less sensitive to active layer thickness than PDTP4TFBT:PC71BM and PPN4TFBT:PC71BM solar cells. Over 8% PCEs can be obtained from PTIQ4TFBT:PC71BM solar cells when the active layer thickness is over 500 nm.  相似文献

The quest for new materials is one of the main factors propelling recent advances in organic photovoltaics. Star‐shaped small molecules (SSMs) have been proven promising candidates as perspective donor material due to the increase in numbers of excitation pathways caused by the degeneracy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level. In order to unravel the pathways of the initial photon‐to‐charge conversion, the photovoltaic blends based on three different SSMs with a generic structure of N(phenylene‐nthiophene‐dicyanovinyl‐alkyl)3 (n = 1–3), and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) acceptor are investigated by ultrafast photoinduced absorption spectroscopy assisted by density functional theory calculations. It is shown that both electron transfer from SSMs to PC71BM and hole transfer from PC71BM to SSMs are equally significant for generation of long‐lived charges. In contrast, intramolecular (intra‐SSM) charge separation results in geminate recombination and therefore constitutes a loss channel. Overall, up to 60% of long‐lived separated charges are generated at the optimal PC71BM concentrations. The obtained results suggest that further improvement of the SSM‐based solar cells is feasible via optimization of blend morphology and by suppressing the intra‐SSM recombination channel.  相似文献

The design and performance of solar cells based on InP grown by the nonepitaxial thin‐film vapor–liquid–solid (TF‐VLS) growth technique is investigated. The cell structure consists of a Mo back contact, p‐InP absorber layer, n‐TiO2 electron selective contact, and indium tin oxide transparent top electrode. An ex situ p‐doping process for TF‐VLS grown InP is introduced. Properties of the cells such as optoelectronic uniformity and electrical behavior of grain boundaries are examined. The power conversion efficiency of first generation cells reaches 12.1% under simulated 1 sun illumination with open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of 692 mV, short‐circuit current (JSC) of 26.9 mA cm?2, and fill factor (FF) of 65%. The FF of the cell is limited by the series resistances in the device, including the top contact, which can be mitigated in the future through device optimization. The highest measured VOC under 1 sun is 692 mV, which approaches the optically implied VOC of ≈795 mV extracted from the luminescence yield of p‐InP.  相似文献

A growing number of recent studies have demonstrated the substantial impact of the alkyl side chains on the device performance of organic semiconductors. However, detailed investigation of the effect of side‐chain engineering on the blend morphology and performance of ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) has not yet been undertaken. In this study, the performance of ternary OSCs is investigated in a given poly(4,8‐bis(5‐(2‐ethylhexyl)thiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[1,2‐b;4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl‐alt‐(4‐(2‐ethylhexyl)‐3‐fluorothieno[3,4‐b]thiophene‐)‐2‐carboxylate‐2‐6‐diyl)):[6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PTB7‐Th:PC71BM) host set by introducing various small molecule donors (SMDs) with different terminal side‐chain lengths. As expected, the performance of binary OSCs with SMDs depends greatly on the side‐chain length. In contrast, it is observed that all SMD‐based ternary OSCs exhibit almost identical and high power‐conversion efficiencies of 12.0–12.2%. This minor performance variation is attributed to good molecular compatibility between the two donor components, as evidenced by in‐depth electrical and morphological investigations. These results highlight that the alloy‐like structure formed due to the high compatibility of the donor molecules has a more significant effect on the overall performance than the side‐chain length, offering a new guideline for pairing donor components for achieving high‐performance ternary OSCs.  相似文献
