Lake Zwemlust, a small highly eutrophic lake, was biomanipulated without reducing the external nutrient loading, and the effects were studied for four years. In this paper we pay special attention to the shifts in relative distribution of nitrogen and phosphorus in the different trophic levels and to the changes in growth limitation of the autotrophs.Despite of the high external nutrient loads to the lake (ca 2.4 g P m–2 y–1 and 9.6 g N m–2 y–1), the effects of biomanipulation on the lake ecosystem were pronounced. Before biomanipulation no submerged vegetation was present in the lake and P and N were stored in the phytoplankton (44% N, 47% P), fish (33% N, 9% P) and in dissolved forms (23% N, 44% P). P and N contents in sediments were not determined. In the spring and summer following the biomanipulation (1987), zooplankton grazing controlled the phytoplankton biomass and about 90% of N and P were present in dissolved form in the water. From 1988 onwards submerged macrophyte stands continue to thrive, reducing the ammonium and nitrate concentrations in the water below detection levels. In July 1989 storage of N and P in the macrophytes reached 86% and 80%, respectively. Elodea nuttallii (Planchon) St.John, the dominant species in 1988 and 1989, acted as sink both for N and P during spring and early summer, withdrawing up to ca 60% of its N and P content from the sediment. At the end of the year only part of the N and P from the decayed macrophytes (ca 30% of N and 60% of P) was recovered in the water phase of the ecosystem (chiefly in dissolved forms). The rest remained in the sediment, although some N may have been released from the lake by denitrification. In summer 1990 only 30% of the N and P was found in the macrophytes (dominant species Ceratophyllum demersum L.), while ca 30% of N and P was again stored in phytoplankton and fish.  相似文献

Synopsis Predation and contaminants are two possible factors in the poor recruitment of young lake charr Salvelinus namaycush in the Great Lakes. We measured the feeding rate of slimy sculpins Cottus cognatus and burbot Lota lota on young lake charr (uncontaminated young from eggs of a hatchery brood stock and contaminated young from eggs of Lake Michigan lake charr) in laboratory test chambers with a cobble substrate. The median daily consumption rate of sculpins for all tests was 2 lake charr eggs (N = 22 tests; 95% confidence interval, 0–13) and 2 lake charr free embryos (N = 31 tests; 95% confidence interval, 0–10). Feeding rate did not differ between hatchery and contaminated prey. Slimy sculpins continued to feed on lake charr when another prey organism, the deepwater amphipod Pontoporeia hoyi, was present. Feeding by burbot on free embryos (4–36 d–1) increased as the mobility of young increased, but burbot consumed about 10% of their body weight weekly in free-swimming young (140–380 d–1). Predation on lake charr eggs by sculpins could be considerable over the 100 to 140 d incubation period, and burbot could eat large numbers of free-swimming lake charr as the young fish left the reef. Predation pressure on young lake charr may inhibit rehabilitation of self-sustaining populations of lake charr on some reefs unless a critical egg density has been reached.  相似文献

Data from five Great Lakes studies ofMysis relicta populations were reanalyzed to calculate secondary production estimates using the size-frequency method. Production estimates (P) ranged from 0.25 to 3.2 g dry weight m–2 yr–1. Average annual biomass {xxB} and mean annual density (xxD) were 0.11–1.11 g dry weight/ m2 and 25–434 animals/ m2, respectively. P:{xxB} ratios varied only between 2.2 and 3.3. Maximum and minimum biomass values within a study varied by a factor of 519 for one study but by less than 17 for the others. Highest estimates of P, {xxB} and {xxD} were calculated for collections from a 50-m station in Lake Michigan despite the larger populations suspected to be present at greater depths sampled in the other studies. These conservative estimates provide a basis for scaling trophic interactions involvingM. relicta and emphasize findings by previous workers that night-time sampling with vertical net hauls is the best available technique for quantitative studies ofM. relicta populations in the Great Lakes.  相似文献

The paper summarizes the results of a ten-year (1981–1991) zooplankton research on the Lake Loosdrecht, a highly eutrophic lake. The main cause of the lake's eutrophication and deteriorating water quality was supply up to mid 1984 of water from the River Vecht. This supply was replaced by dephosphorized water from the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal in 1984. The effects of this and other restoration measures on the lake's ecosystem were studied. Despite a reduction in the external P-load from ca. 1.0 g P m–2 y–1 to ca. 0.35 g m–2 y–1 now, the filamentous prokaryotes, including cyanobacteria and Prochlorothrix, continue to dominate the phytoplankton.Among the crustacean plankton Bosmina spp, Chydorus sp. and three species of cyclopoid copepods and their nauplii are quite common. Though there was no major change in the composition of abundant species, Daphnia cucullata, which is the only daphnid in these lakes, became virtually extinct since 1989. Among about 20 genera and 40 species of rotifers the important ones are: Anuraeopsis fissa, Keratella cochlearis, Filinia longiseta and Polyarthra. The rotifers usually peak in mid-summer following the crustacean peak in spring. The mean annual densities of crustaceans decreased during 1988–1991. Whereas seston (< 150 µm) mean mass in the lake increased since 1983 by 20–60%, zooplankton (> 150 µm) mass decreased by 15–35%.The grazing by crustacean community, which was attributable mainly to Bosmina, had mean rates between 10 and 25% d–1. Between 42 and 47% of the food ingested was assimilated. In spring and early summer when both rotifers and crustaceans have their maximal densities the clearance rates of the rotifers were much higher. Based on C/P ratios, the zooplankton (> 150 µm) mass contained 2.5 times more phosphorus than seston (< 150 µm) mass so that the zooplankton comprised 12.5 % of the total-P in total particulate matter in the open water, compared with only 4.5% of the total particulate C. The mean excretion rates of P by zooplankton varied narrowly between 1.5 and 1.8 µg P 1 d–1, which equalled between 14 and 28% d–1 of the P needed for phytoplankton production. The lack of response to restoration measures cannot be ascribed to one single factor. Apparently, the external P-loading is still not low enough and internal P-loading, though low, may be still high enough to sustain high seston levels. Intensive predation by bream is perhaps more important than food quality (high concentrations of filamentous cyanobacteria) in depressing the development of large-bodied zooplankton grazers, e.g. Daphnia. This may also contribute to resistance of the lake's ecosystem to respond to rehabilitation measures.  相似文献

Human activity has been the cause of continuing decline of water quality in most Dutch lakes. Development of lake restoration programmes must take into account the lake functions. Major reduction of the nutrient and pollutant loading is the primary step in lake restoration. Still, the recovery of eutrophic lakes is retarded frequently because of internal phosphorus loading by the lakes' sediments. Sediment dredging, as an additional tool for water quality management to accelerate accomplishing the desired water quality, is studied. In this paper we evaluate the preliminary results of eight lake restoration projects in the Netherlands. The lakes are compared in order to estimate the magnitude of the internal phosphorus loading. Dredging as an additional measure was carried out twice in the peatlake Geerplas. In the Nieuwkoop Lakes only the external phosphorus loading was substantially reduced from 0.9 to 0.2 g P m–2 y–1. Provisional results of these two shallow peatlake restoration projects focussed on eutrophication abatement with and without dredging, are presented. Both show a decrease in phosphorus concentration in the lakes. The necessity to dredge the lakes is discussed.  相似文献

A field study was conducted (May 1981 to June 1982) to develop a data-base on seasonal changes of water and sediment chemistry of Lake Monroe (4 000 ha surface and ca. 2 m deep) located in central Florida, USA. This shallow eutrophic lake is a part of the St. Johns River. Quantitative samples of lake water and sediments were collected on a monthly basis from 16 stations and analyzed for various physico-chemical parameters. Relatively high levels of dissolved solids (mean electrical conductivity (EC) = 1832 µS cm1) prevailed in the lake water, and seasonal changes in EC were probably associated with hydrologic flushing from external sources, such as incoming water from upstream as well as precipitation. Average monthly levels of total N and P during the study period were 1.82 and 0.21 mg l–1, respectively. Nutrient concentrations in the water did not show any strong seasonal trends. Organic matter content of lake sediments ranged from 1 to 182 g C kg–1 of dry sediment, reflecting considerable spatial variability. All nutrient elements in the sediments showed highly significant (P < 0.01) correlations with sediment organic C, though little or no significant relationship appeared at any sampling period between water and sediment chemistry of the lake. Temporal trends in water and sediment chemical parameters may have been concealed by periodic hydrologic flushing of the St. Johns River into Lake Monroe.Florida Agricultural Experiment Stations Journal Series No. 7836.  相似文献

Sedimentary phosphorus fractions and phosphorus release from the sediments were studied in Lake Ladoga at altogether 46 sampling sites, representing the full range of sediment types encountered in the lake. Determination of P fractions and physico-chemical analyses were made of surface sediment cores (10–20 cm long, each sampled at 3–4 levels) and in the overlying water. The range of total phosphorus per dry weight of sediment was 0.2–3.3 mg g–1, and that of inorganic P 0.1–2.5 mg g–1. The levels of interstitial soluble phosphorus, range 2–613 µg 1–1 for total P and 1–315 µg 1–1 for inorganic P, were higher than those of dissolved P concentrations in the overlying water. Diffusive fluxes of phosphate from sediment to the overlying water were estimated using three independent methods. The estimated range was 4–914 µg P m–2 d–1; the mean value for the whole bottom area, 0.1 mg P m–2 d–1, is lower than previously published estimates. The estimated annual contribution of sedimentary inorganic P flux to Lake Ladoga water is equal to 620 tons of P per year, which amounts to more than 10% of the estimated external P load into the lake. 68% of the total diffusive flux emanates from deep water sediments, which are not exposed to seasonal variation of conditions. In deep lakes, such as Lake Ladoga, phosphorus release from the sediments is controlled primarily by diffusive mechanisms. Wave action and currents as well as bioturbation are probably of importance mainly in shallow near-shore areas. Phosphorus release by gas ebullition and macrophytes is considered negligible.  相似文献

The release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) byMysis relicta that occurs while feeding may be an important pathway in the recycling of nutrients in Lake Michigan. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the levels of DOC released byM. relicta from Lake Michigan while grazing on laboratory-cultured diatoms. Increasing filtering rates were observed at progressively lower chlorophyll concentrations. Higher filtering rates were accompanied by higher fragmentation of diatoms and a higher concomitant release of DOC from broken cells. While the amount of DOC release is small (0.02–3.30 g C · 1–1· h–1), it nonetheless is of importance to bacteria and possibly some algae. After assimilation by bacteria and algae, the organic carbon is then available to consumers.Contribution No. 239, Center for Great Lakes Studies, The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI 53201, U.S.A.Contribution No. 239, Center for Great Lakes Studies, The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI 53201, U.S.A.  相似文献

Growth, mortality, recruitment and relative yield per recruit of Sarotherodon galilaeus galilaeus from Lakes Doukon and Togbadji were studied. Data on total length, total weight and sex were recorded on a monthly basis between January and December 2013 for S. g. galilaeus captured by local fishers. The estimated asymptotic lengths L were 26.2 and 23.6?cm for Lakes Doukon and Togbadji, respectively, while the growth rate K was 0.73 in Lake Doukon and 0.87 in Lake Togbadji. Estimates of fishing mortality, 0.27 and 0.47 y?1 for Doukon and Togbadji, respectively, were low relative to natural mortality, 1.51 and 1.74 y?1, respectively. Sizes at first sexual maturity were 12.8 and 13.2?cm for females and males, respectively, in Lake Doukon, and 11.5 and 12.4?cm for females and males, respectively, in Lake Togbadji. The size at first capture was estimated at 13.3 and 12.7?cm for Lakes Doukon and Togbadji, respectively, which, in the light of the size at maturity estimates, indicates that fish spawn at least once before capture. The current exploitation rates of 0.15 for Lake Doukon and 0.21 for Lake Togbadji suggest that their stocks of S. g. galilaeus are not overexploited in either lake.  相似文献

As a result of high nutrient loading Lake Veluwe suffered from an almost permanent bloom of the blue-green algaOscillatoria agardhii Gomont. In 1979, the phosphorus loading of the lake was reduced from approx. 3 to 1 g P.m–2.a–1. Moreover, since then the lake has been flushed during winter periods with water low in phosphorus. This measure aimed primarily at interrupting the continuous algal bloom. The results of these measures show a sharp decline of total-phosphorus values from 0.40–0.60 mg P.l–1 (before 1980) to 0.10–0.20 mg P.l–1 (after 1980). Summer values for chlorophylla dropped from 200–400 mg.m–3 to 50–150 mg.m–3.The increase in transparency of the lake water was relatively small, from summer values of 15–25 cm before the implementation of the measures to 25–45 cm afterwards. The disappointing transparency values may be explained by the decreasing chlorophylla and phosphorus content of the algae per unit biovolume. Blue-green algae are gradually loosing ground. In the summer of 1985 green algae and diatoms dominated the phytoplankton for the first time since almost 20 years. To achieve the ultimate water quality objectives (transparency values of more than 100 cm in summer), the phosphorus loading has to be reduced further.  相似文献

Macrozoobenthos of the ultraoligotrophic Lake 95 (61°N, 46°W, 8 ha, zmax=18 m, ) is composed of about 14 taxa dominated by 12 Chironomidae species. Abundance, life cycle, biomass and production were estimated for the six dominant taxa. Abundance declined fromca. 4150 at 2.5 m depth toca. 1400 ind m–2 at 16 m depth and averagedca. 3200 ind m–2 on a lakewide basis. By numbers,Heterotrissocladius changi andH. oliveri dominated the average fauna.H. changi was common at the 2.5 m and 5 m depth stations, whereasH. oliveri dominated from 5 m depth downwards. Chironomids showed mainly a 1-yr life cycle, but apparently bothHeterotrissocladius species had two contemporary cohorts with emergence in midsummer and late autumn/early spring, respectively. Average annual ratio was 4.2 and 4.6 forH. oliveri andH. changi, respectively. Annual production varied from 0.3 g ash-free dry weight (AFDW) m–2 y–1 at 16 m depth to 1.6 g AFDW m–2 y–1 at 2.5 m depthH. changi contributed 45%, fiveMicropsectra spp. 17% andH. oliveri 15% to total average production, which on a lakewide basis wasca. 1.1 g AFDW or 25 kJ m–2 y–1. Lake 95 thus belongs at the very low end of measured lake zoobenthic productions, which range from 10 kJ m–2 y–1 in Arctic lakes toca. 1600 kJ m–2 y–1 in highly eutrophic shallow lakes.  相似文献

Lake Pamvotis is a moderately sized (22 km2) shallow (z avg=4 m) lake with a polymictic stratification regime located in northwest Greece. The lake has undergone cultural eutrophication over the past 40 years and is currently eutrophic (annual averages of FRP=0.07 mg P l-1, TP=0.11 mg P l-1, NH4 +=0.25 mg N l-1, NO3 =0.56 mg N l-1). FRP and NH4 + levels are correlated to external loading from streams during the winter and spring, and to internal loading during multi-day periods of summer stratification. Algal blooms occurred in summer (July–August green algae, August–September blue-green algae), autumn (October blue-green algae and diatoms), and winter (February diatoms), but not in the spring (March–June). The phytoplankton underwent brief periods of N- and P-limitation, though persistent low transparency (secchi depth of 60–80 cm) also suggests periods of light limitation. Rotifers counts were highest from mid-summer to early autumn whereas copepods were high in the spring and cladocerans were low in the summer. Removal of industrial and sewage point sources a decade ago resulted in a decrease in FRP. A phosphorus mass balance identified further reductions in external loading from the predominately agricultural catchment will decrease FRP levels further. The commercial fishery and lake hatchery also provides opportunities to control algal biomass through biomanipulation measures.  相似文献

Methods to provide accurate accumulation rates for lake models are discussed. Cores were taken in 1979 in two basins of Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, and accumulation rates were calculated by using Pb-210 dating and by a natural landslide marker of 1795 in one basin (Weggis). In the other basin (Horw Bay) the sediment accumulation rates based on the lead method were compared with yearly sedimentation rates measured by sediment traps in 1969/70. At the Weggis station, the core dating yielded sediment accumulation rates of about 400 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 with the lead method, averaged over a sediment depth of 4–20 cm; accumulation was about 700 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 with the marker method, averaged over 0–33 cm. In Horw Bay, the trap method yielded about 1300 g dry wt. M–2 y–1 compared with 400–1000 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 obtained with the lead method and related to various depth intervals. The characteristic sources of error of the three methods as well as several hypotheses for these discrepancies are discussed.  相似文献

Pollen records for American beech (Fagus grandifolia) and eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) compiled from 50 sites in Michigan and Wisconsin, USA, show that both species entered the Upper Great Lakes region about 7000 yr B.P., reaching their western and southwestern boundaries between 2000 and 1000 yr B.P. Fagus advanced northward into lower Michigan as a continuous front, except where Lake Michigan posed a geographic barrier. Colonies were established on the far side of the lake after a 1000 year lag, implying that longdistance dispersal across a 100-km wide barrier can occur. The Fagus range may not have been in equilibrium with climate for one or two thousand years before this time, when seeds were dispersed across the lake to Wisconsin. Tsuga seeds may have been dispersed 150 km or more from Ontario to reach Upper Michigan. Scattered colonies were established 6000–7000 yr B.P. on either side of Lake Michigan, which did not pose a significant barrier to this wind-dispersed species, Tsuga spread rapidly over a large region prior to 5000 yr B.P. Subsequent expansion to the west occurred more slowly, and may reflect gradual climatic changes in northern Wisconsin during the second half of the Holocene. Tsuga's range may have been limited by dispersal, rather than climate, for an unknown length of time prior to 5000 yr B.P. During this period Tsuga was expanding its range rapidly. The study shows, however, that it is difficult to devise rigorous tests to distinguish between dispersal limitations and climate as factors limiting range limits in the past. This work has been supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation. This work has been supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Plankton abundance and biomass were investigated in five lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: Lakes Bonney, Fryxell, Joyce, Hoare and Miers. Despite plankton communities being dominated by organisms <100 m in length, there were striking differences between the lakes, including large variations in plankton vertical distribution and differences in total plankton biomass. Bacterial biomass was highest in the anoxic monimolimnia of the meromictic lakes, reaching 191 g C l–1 in Lake Fryxell. Photosynthetic nanoflagellates dominated phytoplankton in the five lakes studied. Highest chlorophyll a concentrations were recorded at the chemocline of Lake Fryxell (21 g chl a l–1). Heterotrophic nanoflagellate concentrations were low, ranging from 2 cells ml–1 in Hoare to 237 cells ml–1 in Bonney. By Antarctic standards, ciliates were relatively successful in terms of biomass and diversity in Lakes Fryxell and Hoare. In contrast, Lake Miers possessed extremely low ciliate abundance (<0.04 cells ml–1). On both sampling occasions, copepod nauplii were observed in Lake Joyce. This is the first recording of crustacean zooplankton within the McMurdo Dry Valley Lakes. Because the foodwebs of these lakes are structured by bottom-up forces, differences in plankton distributions could be related to the physicochemical characteristics of each lake. The effect of lake evolution (legacy) and present-day climate change on planktonic dynamics is discussed.  相似文献

Lake Monroe is the largest body of water in Indiana with a daily mean productivity of 220 mg · C · m−2 · day−1 in an observed range from 26 to 714 m · C · M−2 day−1. It is a medium soft reservoir; the acid combining capacity varies from 0.28 to 0.71 meq · l−1 with a mean slightly above 0.5 meq · l−1. The results of diurnal changes in major nutrients, the C, N, and P ratios, and bioassay experiments indicated that phosphorus is the major limiting nutrient on algal photosynthesis in this lake. Surface photo-inhibition may be used to indicate the sufficiency of light for the species of algae in the water. The low productivity in December, January, February, and early March can be attributed to light limitation due to low water transparency. The abundance of Gloeotrichia echinulata colonies in the sediments of Lake Erken and their phosphorus content were investigated to determine the contribution of Gloeotrichia colonies to total sediment phosphorus. Moreover, the potential size of the algal inoculum and the migration to the water during summer were estimated. The surplus phosphorus content of the resting colonies in the sediment was about 45% of total phosphorus, which maximized at 8.5 µg P (mg dw)–1 or 81 ng P colony–1. The C:P ratio (by weight) in the early colonies appearing in the lake water was 50:1, while the ratio stabilized at 150 during the major migration period. The internal supply of surplus phosphorus was used during the pelagic growth of the colonies. The internal phosphorus loading to the epilimnion of Lake Erken due to Gloeotrichia migration could, from the measurements of the increase in particulate epilimnetic phosphorus, be estimated at 40 mg P m –2 or 2.5 mg P m–2 d–1 in late July and early August. Determination of the number of colonies in the sediment before and during the migration verified this value to be a conservative estimate of the internal phosphorus loading due to Gloeotrichia migration to the epilimnion in Lake Erken. The sediment P content calculated from the P concentration in early epilimnion colonies resulted in a value of 35 µg P (g dw)–1 as a maximum. This corresponds to only 3% of the total phosphorus content in Lake Erken sediment.  相似文献

The data on benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) and other polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) pollution of Lake Peipsi and its tributaries in the 1970s–1980s have been summarized. Systematic data on the pollution of Lake Peipsi by BaP are available. The BaP content in lake water varied from <0.1 to 237 ng 1–1. The content and qualitative composition of PAH varied in different observations. PAH were accumulated mainly in the bottom sediments; in their surface layer BaP concentrations were 103–106 times higher than in water. The concentration of the PAH in bottom sediments varied from 16 to 580 µg kg–1 in the lake and from 40 to 2800 µg kg–1 in its tributaries. The content of BaP in fish and biota was not high. Among the pollution sources the atmospheric pollution played quite a significant role. The lake was also polluted by oil spillage and fuel exhausts from boats and ships. The PAH concentration in the water of the tributaries was somewhat higher than in the area of Lake Peipsi.  相似文献

After a reduction of the external phosphorus loading to a lake, an internal loading from the sediments may delay the improvement of the water quality. The accepted method to combat internal loading is careful dredging of the upper sediment layers (Cooke et al., 1986), but this method is costly and time consuming. Addition of phosphorus binding agents to the sediments might offer an alternative. In the Netherlands the use of aluminum compounds, the most common phosphorus binding agent, for water quality improvement purposes is not favoured. Therefore a sediment treatment with a solution of iron(III)chloride was tested. Iron was chosen because it is considered to be a natural binder of phosphate. 100 g m–2 of Fe3+ were added to the sediments of the shallow (1.75 m average depth) and eutrophic Lake Groot Vogelenzang (The Netherlands) in October and November 1989. The iron(III)chloride solution was diluted 100 times with lake water and mixed with the surface sediments with a water jet.Following the addition the concentrations of total phosphorus (Fig. 1), chlorophyll-a and suspended solids decreased. This improvement of the water quality lasted for three months. After this time the total phosphorus concentration increased again, but remained at a lower level than in spring and summer of 1989. The phosphorus release rate from the sediments as measured from intact sediment cores decreased from 4 to 1.2 mg P m–2 d–1 (n = 5), and the bioavailability of the sediment phosphorus, as measured with bioassays, decreased from 34 to 23% (n = 5) shortly after the treatment. One year after the treatment the release rate was increased to 3 mg P m–2 d–1 (n = 5). Before treatment, the lake was thought to have a residence time of over one year. However, the chloride added to the lake disappeared according to a dilution rate of 0.03 d–1 or a retention time of about 35 days. A high external loading due to rapid flushing with phosphorus-rich water from surrounding lakes possibly prevented a more durable improvement in water quality. Another possibility is that the iron addition has lost its phosphate binding capacity due to reduction or binding with other anions like carbonate or sulphide. Therefore the suitability of the method to reduce internal loading and especially the long term availability of added iron to bind phosphorus needs additional proof. The treatment of the 18 ha area of Lake Groot Vogelenzang took three weeks. The operational costs were about US$ 125000. This is fast and cheap compared to dredging. Application of the technique is limited to those cases where the sediments are not polluted with micro-pollutants and the water depth need not be increased.  相似文献

Lake Vesijärvi, southern Finland, suffered sewere eutrophication by sewage effluent from the city of Lahti during the 1960's and the early 1970's. The municipal sewage loading was diverted from the lake in 1976 and the lake started to recover. However, in the 1980's blue-green algal blooms increased again and the recovery of the lake faded. Enclosure experiments demonstrated that high roach (Rutilus rutilus) biomass is one of the key factors in the fading recovery of the lake. In this study, the influence of roach and another cyprinid fish species (bleak, Alburnus alburnus) to planktonic algal productivity and biomass in Lake Vesijärvi was examined. Enclosure experiments in the field showed the impacts of planktivorous bleak on water quality; in an enclosure with a density of 1 fish m–2 average daily algal production (1370 mg C m–2) and chlorophyll-a concentration (50–90 µg 1–1) were more than twice that in an enclosure without fish. Laboratory experiments showed that the availability of planktonic food affects the foraging behaviour of roach and consequently the internal nutrient loading from the sediment into the water. Roach caused the highest phosphorus loading and turbidity when there was no zooplanktonic food available in the water. The possible interactions between planktivorous and omnivorous fish species are discussed.  相似文献
