The relationship between heterotrophic bacteria and phytoplankton in the epilimnion (0–10 m) of hypertrophic Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa, was examined by statistically analyzing three years of parallel measurements of heterotrophic bacterial activity (glucose uptake) and phytoplankton particulate and dissolved organic carbon production. Algal biomass ranged between 4.0 and 921.1 mg Chl a m-3 at the surface. Primary production varied between 69.5 and 3010.0 mg C m-2h-1 while algal production of dissolved organic carbon (EDOC) ranged from 2.5 to 219.2 mg C m-2h-1. Bacterial numbers reached a summer peak of 44.23 × 106 cells ml-1 in the first year and showed no depth variation. The maximum rate of glucose uptake, Vmax, reached a peak of 5.52 g C l-1h-1. Vmax, maximum glucose concentration (Kt + Sn) and glucose turnover time (Tt) were usually highest at the surface and decreased with depth concomitant with algal production. At the surface, Vmax was correlated to EDOC (r = 0.59, n = 67, p < 0.001) and primary production (r = 0.71, n = 70, p < 0.001). At 5 and 10 m, Vmax was correlated to integral euphotic zone (~ 4 m) algal production and bacterial numbers. Glucose turnover time was inversely related to integral algal production (r = -0.72, n = 70, p < 0.001) and less strongly to bacterial numbers. The data indicated that although bacterial numbers and biomass were low relative to algal biomass in this hypertrophic lake, the heterotrophic bacteria attained high rates of metabolic activity as a result of enhanced algal production of available organic carbon.  相似文献

The number of metabolically active bacteria was measured with nalidixic acid over two annual cycles at three depths in the epilimnion of hypertrophic Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa. Concurrent measurements were made of water temperature, DOC, phytoplankton production of dissolved (EDOC) and particulate organic carbon, chlorophyll a and the uptake of glucose (Vmax). The objective was to determine the dominant factors correlated to the number of metabolically active bacteria and the relationship between active bacterial numbers and heterotrophic activity. The number of active bacteria was usually highest at the surface and ranged between 0.70 and 6.82 x 106 cells ml–1. The dominant factors correlated to the number of bacteria at the surface were water temperature (r = 0.65, n = 54, p<0.001), primary production (r = 0.53, n = 51, p<0.001) and EDOC (r = 0.37, n = 45, p = 0.005). Surface Vmax for glucose ranged between 0.11 and 4.0 µgC 1–1 h–1 and was positively correlated to the number of active bacteria (r = 0.61, n = 53, p<0.001). The specific activity index (10–12 µgC cell–1 h–1) varied between 80 and 2290 at the surface and was most strongly correlated to EDOC (r = 0.70, n = 48, p<0.001). Relationships between active bacterial numbers, water temperature, phytoplankton activity and glucose uptake were also found at two additional depths within the epilimnion. These data suggest that bacterial populations in nutrient enriched lakes contain a large number of metabolically active cells with high individual activity as a result of enhanced phytoplankton growth.  相似文献

Phytoplankton production and accumulation of extracellular organic carbon (EOC) was tracked during diel intervals in microcosms by inhibiting bacterioplankton assimilation of EOC with streptomycin and kanamycin. Bacterioplankton production (3H-thymidine incorporation) and metabolism (14C-glucose incorporation) were monitored in samples collected from the Potomac River estuary to determine the effect of the antibiotics. Particulate (i.e., raw water) primary production and EOC (i.e., water passing through 1.0 μm glass fiber filter) production rates were monitored to determine the impact of antibiotics on phytoplankton. In preliminary experiments, neither streptomycin nor kanamycin alone significantly inhibited bacterioplankton activity compared to controls, but when both were present secondary production and metabolism were reduced up to 90%, and remained as such for 45 h. During field evaluations using a streptomycin and kanamycin mixture (50 μM each) particulate primary production and EOC production were not statistically different in control and antibiotic treated samples indicating that the antibiotics did not negatively influence phytoplankton production rates. In the presence of antibiotics dissolved free amino acids (DFAA) and, to a lesser extent, monosaccharides were significantly elevated compared to controls. This study demonstrates that streptomycin and kanamycin are capable of inhibiting bacterioplankton metabolism and uptake of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the samples tested so that the contribution of EOC to the DOC pool and to bacterioplankton metabolism could be measured and assessed.  相似文献

Pelagic food web processes in an oligotrophic lake   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Major pelagic carbon pathways, including primary production, release of extracellular products (EOC), bacterial production and zooplankton grazing were measured in oligotrophic Lake Almind (Denmark) and in enclosures (7 m3) subjected to artificial eutrophication. Simultaneous measurements at three days interval of carbon exchange rates and pools allowed the construction of carbon flow scenarios over a nineteen day experimental period. The flow of organic carbon was dominated by phytoplankton EOC release, which amounted from 44 to 58% of the net fixation of inorganic carbon. Gross bacterial production accounted for 33 to 75% of the primary production. The lower values of EOC release (44%) and bacterial production (33%) were found in the enclosures with added nutrients. The release of recently fixed photosynthetic products was the most important source of organic carbon to the bacterioplankton. Uptake of dissolved free amino acids was responsible for 52 to 62% of the gross bacterial production. Thus, amino acids constituted a significant proportion of the EOC. Zooplankton (< 50 µm) grazing on algae and bacteria accounted only for a minor proportion of the particulate production in May. Circumstantial evidence is presented that suggests the chrysophycean alga Dinobryon was the most important bacterial remover. The results clearly demonstrated EOC release and bacterial metabolism to be key processes in pelagic carbon cycling in this oligotrophic lake.  相似文献

Daphnia hyalina was used to assess the impact of zooplanktonon the photosynthetic activity of picocyanobacteria. A phosphorus-limitedlaboratory system was designed, composed of 3-µm filteredlake water with natural assemblages to which non-axenic Synechococcussp. was added. Different treatments with and without Daphniawere arranged; aliquots from these were sampled during 3-dayincubations to measure changes in picocyanobacterial net primaryproduction (NPP), excreted organic carbon (EOC), dissolved organiccarbon (DOC) and photosynthetic parameters (photosynthesis–irradianceresponse curves). Bacterial number, biovolume and productionwere measured in both the treatment and control to evaluatepossible bacterial interferences. A significant increase ofpicocyanobacterial photosynthesis and efficiency (2- and 3-foldincrease of Pmax and respectively) was observed in bottlessupplemented with Daphnia, whereas cell-specific bacterial productiondid not. At the same time, the EOC:NPP ratio was 2.3 times lowerwith the grazer. This result clearly shows the impact of P recyclingmediated by a grazer on picocyanobacterial growth and production.  相似文献

The accumulation and biodegradation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved and particulate combined neutral sugars (DCNS, PCNS) were followed during a period of 22 days in experimental marine phytoplankton incubations. Five different growth regimes were established in 11 m3 coastal mesocosms to test whether an alternate Redfield ratio with either N or P depletion and ±diatom dominance would induce accumulation of refractory DOC (RDOC) and DCNS. The highest accumulation of DOC, DCNS and PCNS was found in the diatom dominated mesocosms. Sixteen percent of the newly accumulated DOC in the mesocosms with diatoms dominating could be explained by DCNS, while only 6% was explained in the mesocosms with few diatoms. PCNS composition was similar in all mesocosms and with dominance of glucose and mannose, while DCNS were more evenly distributed with the following mole percentages fucose 15, rhamnose 14, arabinose 6, galactose 27, glucose 20 and mannose 18%. The DCNS composition did not reflect the PCNS composition at any time during the experiment. Accumulated DCNS were quickly degraded and only 1% of the new RDOC was explained by DCNS. RDOC accumulated after day # 17 in the two mesocosms driven towards the most severe P limitation both with and without silicate. This shows that RDOC can be produced directly by the phytoplankton or indirectly in food web processes during the later stages of a bloom where the phytoplankton is P limited.  相似文献

We compared terrestrial net primary production (NPP) and terrestrial export of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) with lake water heterotrophic bacterial activity in 12 headwater lake catchments along an altitude gradient in subarctic Sweden. Modelled NPP declined strongly with altitude and annual air temperature decreases along the altitude gradient (6°C between the warmest and the coldest catchment). Estimated terrestrial DOC export to the lakes was closely correlated to NPP. Heterotrophic bacterial production (BP) and respiration (BR) were mainly based on terrestrial organic carbon and strongly correlated with the terrestrial DOC export. Excess respiration over PP of the pelagic system was similar to net emission of CO2 in the lakes. BR and CO2 emission made up considerably higher shares of the terrestrial DOC input in warm lakes than in cold lakes, implying that respiration and the degree of net heterotrophy in the lakes were dependant not only on terrestrial export of DOC, but also on characteristics in the lakes which changed along the gradient and affected the bacterial metabolization of allochthonous DOC. The study showed close links between terrestrial primary production, terrestrial DOC export and bacterial activity in lakes and how these relationships were dependant on air temperature. Increases in air temperature in high latitude unproductive systems might have considerable consequences for lake water productivity and release of CO2 to the atmosphere, which are ultimately determined by terrestrial primary production.  相似文献

Data concerning concentrations and fluxes of dissolved organic compounds (DOC) from marine and lacustrine environments are reviewed and discussed. Dissolved free amino acids and carbohydrates comprised the main fraction in the labile organic carbon pool. Dissolved free amino acids in marine waters varied between 3–1400 nM and those of freshwaters between 2.6–4124 nM. Dissolved free carbohydrates varied between 0.4–5000 nM in marine systems and between 14–1111 nM in freshwaters. The turnover times of both substrate pools varied in marine waters between 1.4 hours and 948 days and in freshwaters between 2 hours and 51 days. Measurements of stable12/13C-ratio and14C-isotope dating in ocean deep water samples revealed DOC turnover times between 2000–6000 years. Studies on carbon flows within the aquatic food webs revealed that about 50% of photosynthetically fixed carbon was channelled via DOC to the bacterioplankton. Excreted organic carbon varied between 1–70% of photosynthetically fixed carbon in marine waters and between 1–99% in freshwaters. The labile organic carbon pool represented only 10–30% of the DOC. The majority (70–90%) of the DOC was recalcitrant to microbial assimilation. Only 10–20% of the DOC could be easily chemically identified. Most of the large bulk material represented dissolved humic matter and neither the chemical structure nor the ecological function of the DOC is as yet clearly understood.Abbreviations ATP Adenosine Tri-Phosphate - AMS Accelerated Mass Spectrometry - BSA Bovine Serum Albumin - GlAse GlucosidAse activity - DAA Dissolved Amino Acids - DCAA Dissolved Combined Amino Acids - DFAA Dissolved Free Amino Acids - DTAA Dissolved Total Amino Acids - DCHO Dissolved Carbohydrates - DCCHO Dissolved Combined Carbohydrates - DFCHO Dissolved Free Carbohydrates - DTCHO Dissolved Total Carbohydrates - DLCFaAc Dissolved Long Chain Fatty Acids - DSCFaAc Dissolved Short Chain Fatty Acids - DOC Dissolved Organic Carbon - DOM Dissolved Organic Matter - DHM Dissolved Humic Matter - DTPhOH Dissolved Total Phenolic compounds - DCPhOH Dissolved Combined Phenolic compounds - DFPhOH Dissolved Free Phenolic conpounds - EOC Excreted Organic Carbon - HS Humic Substances - HPLC High Performance Liquid Chromatography - HTCO High-Temperature Catalytic Oxidation - (Kt+Sn) Transport Constant + Natural Substrate from Michaelis Menten Kinetics - LOCP Labile Organic Carbon Pool - OM Organic Matter - MEE Microbial Extracellular Enzymes - PER Percent of Extracellular Release - PhDOC Photosynthetically derived Dissolved Organic Carbon - POC Particulate Organic Carbon - ROCP Recalcitrant Organic Carbon Pool - Tt Turnover time - UDOC Utilizable Dissolved Organic Carbon - Vmax Maximum Uptake Velocity - WCO Wet Chemical Oxidation Dedicated to Prof. Drs. 1. The biomass and production of picophytoplankton, large phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacterioplankton were measured in humic Lake Örträsket, northern Sweden during four consecutive summers.
2. High flow episodes, carrying fresh dissolved organic carbon (DOC) into the lake, always stimulated heterotrophic bacterial production at the expense of primary production. Primary production never exceeded bacterial production for approximately 20 days after such an episode had replenished epilimnial DOC. We suggest that allochthonous DOC is an energy source that stimulates bacterioplankton that, because of their efficient uptake of inorganic nutrients, are then able to outcompete phytoplankton. After the exhaustion of readily available DOC, phytoplankton were able to dominate epilimnion production in Lake Örträsket.
3. Biomass production was higher when dominated by phytoplankton than by bacterioplankton, despite a similar utilization of nutrients in the epilimnion throughout the summer. We propose that different C : N : P ratios of bacterioplankton and phytoplankton permit the latter to produce more carbon (C) biomass per unit of available inorganic nutrients than bacterioplankton.  相似文献

  • 1 Picoplankton community production (0.2–2μm) was investigated over 3 months, June-September 1991, in Llyn Padarn, a mesotrophic upland lake in north Wales.
  • 2 The picoplankton was differentiated into autotrophic algae (<1–3μm) and heterotrophic bacteria (<0.2–1 μm) using differential filtration through a 1 μm pore size Nuclepore filter.
  • 3 Efficient separation of these distinct metabolic constituents of picoplankton was obtained. A good correlation (r= 0.81, P < 0.001) was found between physical separation of bacterial and picoalgal cells from fluorescence microscopy and the distribution of heterotrophic metabolic activity between different cell size fractions measured by uptake of 14C-glucose.
  • 4 Picoplankton community production was differentiated into the ‘absolute’ autotrophic production by picoalgae, corrected for overestimation due to retention of bacteria with the picoalgae, and the heterotrophic component, bacterial uptake of ‘extracellular organic carbon’ (EOC), derived from the entire phytoplankton community.
  • 5 The heterotrophic contribution to picoplankton community production ranged from 88 to 1%, mean value 55% of total. Autotrophic picoplankton production was dominant in June and July, but in August and September heterotrophic uptake of EOC was the major input to picoplankton community production.
  • 6 During the 3 months, the mean contributions to plankton production were autotrophic picoplankton 10.3%, heterotrophic bacterial uptake of EOC 9.7%, EOC in lake water 11.6% and phytoplankton (>3μm) 68.3%.
  • 7 Bacteria accounted for about half the picopfankton community production via uptake of EOC. Thus although autotrophic picoplankton were ubiquitous, it is likely that their contribution via primary production to the carbon balance of planktonic environments has been overestimated in previous studies.

This study was conducted to evaluate: (1) the bacterial growth and the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) uptake in an Amazonian lake (Lake Batata) at high-water and low-water periods of the flood pulse; (2) the influence of nitrogen and phosphorus (NP) additions on bacterial growth and DOC uptake in Lake Batata at two flood pulse periods; and (3) the bioavailability of the main DOC sources in Lake Batata. Lake Batata is a typical clear-water Amazonian lake, located in the watershed of Trombetas River, Central Amazon, Brazil. Bacterial batch cultures were set up with 90% 0.2-μm filtered water and 10% inoculum from Lake Batata. N-NH4NO3 and P-KH2PO4, with final concentrations of 50 and 5 μM, respectively, were added to the cultures, except for controls. Extra sources of DOC (e.g., algal lysate, plant leachates) were added to constitute six distinct treatments. Bacterial response was measured by maximum bacterial abundance and rates of bacterial production, respiration, DOC uptake, and bacterial growth efficiency (BGE). Bacterial growth and DOC uptake were higher in NP treatments than in controls, indicating a consistent nutrient limitation in Lake Batata. The composition of DOC also seems to be an important regulating factor of bacterial growth in Lake Batata. Seasonally, bacterial growth and DOC bioavailability were higher at low-water period, when the phytoplankton is a significant extra source of DOC, than at high-water period, when the forest is the main source of DOC. DOC bioavailability was better estimated based on the diversity and the diagenetic stage of carbon compounds than on single classes of labile compounds. Changes in BGE were better related to CNP stoichiometry in the water, and the “excess” of organic substrates was oxidized in catabolism, despite the quality of these compounds for bacterial growth. Finally, we conclude that bacterial growth and DOC uptake vary throughout the flood pulse in clear-water Amazonian ecosystems as a result of changes in nutrient concentration and in DOC composition.  相似文献

The Catskill Mountains of southeastern New York State have among thehighest rates of atmospheric nitrogen deposition in the United States. Somestreams draining Catskill catchments have shown dramatic increases in nitrateconcentrations while others have maintained low nitrate concentrations. Streamsin which exchange occurs between surface and subsurface (i.e. hyporheic) watersare thought to be conducive to nitrate removal via microbial assimilationand/ordenitrification. Hyporheic exchange was documented in the Neversink River inthesouthern Catskill Mountains, but dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrate(NO3 ) losses along hyporheic flowpaths werenegligible. In this study, Neversink River water was amended with natural, bioavailable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) (leaf leachate) in a series ofexperimental mesocosms that simulated hyporheic flowpaths. DOC and N dynamicswere examined before and throughout a three week BDOC amendment. In addition, bacterial production, dissolved oxygen demand, denitrification, and sixextracellular enzyme activities were measured to arrive at a mechanisticunderstanding of potential DOC and NO3 removalalong hyporheic flowpaths. There were marked declines in DOC and completeremoval of nitrate in the BDOC amended mesocosms. Independent approaches wereused to partition NO3 loss into two fractions:denitrification and assimilation. Microbial assimilation appears to be thepredominant process explaining N loss. These results suggest that variabilityinBDOC may contribute to temporal differences in NO3 export from streams in the Catskill Mountains.  相似文献

Pelagic carbon metabolism in a eutrophic lake during a clear-water phase   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Dissolved and paniculate organic carbon (DOC and POC, respectively),primary production, bacterial production, bacterial carbon demandand community grazing were measured for 9 weeks in eutrophicFrederiksborg Slotssø. The period covered the declineof the spring bloom, a clear-water phase and a summer phasewith increasing phytoplankton biomass. The process rates andchanges in pools of organic carbon were combined in a carbonbudget for the epilimnion. The POC budget showed a close balancefor both the post-spring bloom and the clear-water phase, whilea surplus was found in the summer phase. Production of POC wasdominated by phytoplankton (2/3) compared to bacteria (1/3)during all phases, and there was a significant correlation betweenphytoplankton and bacterial production rates (r2 = 0.48, P <0.039). Bacterial demand for DOC was balanced by productionand changes in the pool of DOC during the decline of the springbloom, but the calculated demand exceeded the supply by 81 and167%, respectively, during the other two periods. The discrepancywas most probably due to an underestimation of bacterial growthefficiency and an overestimation of in situ bacterial productionin carbon units. Production of bacterial substrate by zooplanktonactivity was estimated to be higher than the direct excretionof organic carbon from phytoplankton. The biological successionwas regulated by the balance between area primary productionand community grazing. The clear-water phase was initiated bya combination of low primary production due to low surface irradianceand high community grazing (100 mmol C m–2 day–1),which caused a decrease in phytoplankton biomass. However, dueto the high initial phytoplankton biomass, community grazingwas not high enough to cause a significant decrease in areaprimary production. The summer phase was initiated by a decreasein community grazing followed by an increase in phytoplanktonbiomass. Based on these observations and calculations of areaprimary production as a function of chlorophyll concentrations,we suggest that the possibility for zooplankton to regulatephytoplankton biomass in temperate lakes decreases with increasingnutrient level.

Two methods were used to compare phytoplankton release and bacterialuptake of extracellular organic carbon (EOC) products. A sizefractionation and an antibiotic method were used simultaneouslyduring several diel in Situ studies in Danish lakes and onecoastal area. Phytoplankton populations were very sensitiveto even small concentrations of antibiotics (1 µg ml–1).Generally the bacterial activity was inhibited by 50%. In caseswhere the antibiotics did not affect phytoplankton photosynthesis, the two methods agreed reasonably. Bacterial respiration dataobtained with the antibiotic method were in the range of valuesfrom the literature. This supports the conclusion that the partialuncoupling of EOC release and uptake with antibiotics can beused to follow the flux of EOC in situ. The effect on the phytoplanktonmust however, be evaluated in each experiment. The methodologicalproblems of both approaches are discussed.  相似文献

Organic carbon supply is linked to nitrogen transformation in ecosystems. However, the role of organic carbon quality in nitrogen processing is not as well understood. We determined how the quality of particulate organic carbon (POC) influenced nitrogen transformation in stream sediments by burying identical quantities of varying quality POC (northern red oak (Quercus rubra) leaves, red maple (Acer rubrum) leaves, red maple wood) in stream mesocosms and measuring the effects on nitrogen retention and denitrification compared to a control of combusted sand. We also determined how POC quality affected the quantity and quality of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved oxygen concentration in groundwater. Nitrate and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) retention were assessed by comparing solute concentrations and fluxes along groundwater flow paths in the mesocosms. Denitrification was measured by in situ changes in N2 concentrations (using MIMS) and by acetylene block incubations. POC quality was measured by C:N and lignin:N ratios and DOC quality was assessed by fluorescence excitation emission matrix spectroscopy. POC quality had strong effects on nitrogen processing. Leaf treatments had much higher nitrate retention, TDN retention and denitrification rates than the wood and control treatments and red maple leaf burial resulted in higher nitrate and TDN retention rates than burial of red oak leaves. Leaf, but not wood, burial drove pore water to severe hypoxia and leaf treatments had higher DOC production and different DOC chemical composition than the wood and control treatments. We think that POC quality affected nitrogen processing in the sediments by influencing the quantity and quality of DOC and redox conditions. Our results suggest that the type of organic carbon inputs can affect the rates of nitrogen transformation in stream ecosystems.  相似文献

Summary The objectives of the 3 year study were to determine the relationship between bacterial numbers and phytoplankton standing crops (chlorophyll a) in sub-antarctic Marion Island lakes (33) and to determine the relative importance of labile dissolved organic carbon and water temperature as regulators of heterotrophic bacterial activity and production. Bacterial activity (the incorporation and respiration rates of 14C-labelled substrates) and production (the rate of [methyl-3H]thymidine incorporation into DNA) were measured in oligotrophic Lava Lake and Gentoo Lake, an elephant seal wallow. Samples were incubated under ambient conditions as well as at increased temperature and with additions of labile dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Bacterial numbers ranged from 2.13 × 105 cell ml–1 to 15.17 × 106 cells ml–1 in the lake survey. The chlorophyll range was 0.18 to >75 g 1–1. Bacterial numbers were not correlated to chlorophyll concentration in waters where the chlorophyll content was 5 g 1–1 but were correlated in waters with larger algal contents. Heterotrophic bacterial activity and production, which were similar to rates recorded for equivalent lower latitude systems, were higher in Gentoo Lake than in Lava Lake. As a result of qualitative and quantitative differences in the DOC pools, DOC was the stronger regulator of bacterial activity and production in Lava Lake, while temperature was the stronger factor in Gentoo Lake.  相似文献

The biodegradability of terrigenous dissolved organic matter (tDOM) exported to the sea has a major impact on the global carbon cycle, but our understanding of tDOM bioavailability is fragmentary. In this study, the effects of preparative tDOM isolation on microbial decomposition were investigated in incubation experiments consisting of mesocosms containing mesohaline water from the Baltic Sea. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) consumption, molecular DOM composition, bacterial activities, and shifts in bacterial community structure were compared between mesocosms supplemented with riverine tDOM, either as filtered, particle-free river water or as a concentrate obtained by lyophilization/tangential ultrafiltration, and those containing only Baltic Sea water or river water. As shown using ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry (15 Tesla Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, FT-ICR-MS) covering approximately 4600 different DOM compounds, the three DOM preparation protocols resulted in distinct patterns of molecular DOM composition. However, despite DOC losses of 4–16% and considerable bacterial production, there was no significant change in DOM composition during the 28-day experiment. Moreover, tDOM addition affected neither DOC degradation nor bacterial dynamics significantly, regardless of the tDOM preparation. This result suggested that the introduced tDOM was largely not bioavailable, at least on the temporal scale of our experiment, and that the observed bacterial activity and DOC decomposition mainly reflected the degradation of unknown, labile, colloidal and low-molecular weight DOM, both of which escape the analytical window of FT-ICR-MS. In contrast to the different tDOM preparations, the initial bacterial inoculum and batch culture conditions determined bacterial community succession and superseded the effects of tDOM addition. The uncoupling of tDOM and bacterial dynamics suggests that mesohaline bacterial communities cannot efficiently utilize tDOM and that in subarctic estuaries other factors are responsible for the removal of imported tDOM.  相似文献

Bacterial cell number and secondary production of bacterioplanktonwere measured during two periods of 14 and 19 days, respectively,in experimental enclosures of lake water (each containing about5–7 m3 and in two Danish, eutrophic lakes. Additions ofphosphate and planktivorous fish to some of the enclosures inducedrapid changes in the phytoplankton biomass, primary productionand release of extracellular organic carbon (EOC). In some ofthe enclosures containing fish, release of EOC from phytoplanktoncon stituted from 36 to 55% of the bacterial secondary productiondetermined by means of [3H]thymidine incorporation into DNA.In others, such a relationship was not found, suggesting thatphytoplankton species-specific release rates of compositionof EOC might play a role in the microbial response.
