A randomized, double‐blind, sham‐controlled, feasibility and dosing study was undertaken to determine if a common pulsing electromagnetic field (PEMF) treatment could moderate the substantial osteopenia that occurs after forearm disuse. Ninety‐nine subjects were randomized into four groups after a distal radius fracture, or carpal surgery requiring immobilization in a cast. Active or identical sham PEMF transducers were worn on the distal forearm for 1, 2, or 4 h/day for 8 weeks starting after cast removal (“baseline”) when bone density continues to decline. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone geometry were measured in the distal forearm by dual energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) at entry (“baseline”) and 8, 16, and 24 weeks later. Significant average BMD losses after baseline were observed in the affected forearm at all time points (5–7% distally and 3–4% for the radius/ulna shaft). However, after adjusting for age, gender, and baseline BMD there was no evidence of a positive effect of active versus sham PEMF treatment on bone loss by DXA or pQCT for subjects completing all visits (n = 82, ~20 per group) and for an intent‐to‐treat analysis (n = 99). Regardless of PEMF exposure, serum bone‐specific alkaline phosphatase (BSAP) was normal at baseline and 8 weeks, while serum c‐terminal collagen teleopeptide (CTX‐1) was markedly elevated at baseline and less so at 8 weeks. Although there was substantial variability in disuse osteopenia, these results suggested that the particular PEMF waveform and durations applied did not affect the continuing substantial disuse bone loss in these subjects. doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2012.00625.x Comparison of mandibular bone mineral density in osteoporotic, osteopenic and normal elderly edentulous subjects measured by the dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry technique Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the mandibular body bone mineral density according to bone mineral density status of spine and femur measured by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) technique in elderly edentulous individuals. Background: One of the factors that affect the survival rate of implants is bone mineral density (BMD) of the jaws. Materials and methods: Fifty edentulous elderly patients’ (27 women and 23 men) spine, femur and the mandibular body BMDs were measured using DXA technique. BMD scans of the AP lumbar spine (L2–L3) and femur were classified using World Health Organisation criteria for bone mass. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the normal femur group’s–osteoporosis group’s mandibular body BMD (p = 0.001) and femoral osteopaenia group’s–osteoporosis group’s mandibular body BMD (p < 0.001). The femoral osteoporosis group’s mandibular body BMDs were lower than those of both the normal femoral and the femoral osteopaenia group subjects’. Conclusion: Classification of edentulous mandibles according to low and high bone mineral densities is a problem in implant dentistry. The results of this study demonstrated that femoral bone mineral density status may be used to provide preliminary information about the bone mineral density of the mandibular body region in elderly edentulous subjects.  相似文献

Previously, we reported significant bone mineral density (BMD) loss in postmenopausal women after modest weight loss. It remains unclear whether the magnitude of BMD change in response to weight loss is appropriate (i.e., proportional to weight loss) and whether BMD is recovered with weight regain. We now report changes in BMD after a 1‐year follow‐up. Subjects (n = 23) in this secondary analysis were postmenopausal women randomized to placebo as part of a larger trial. They completed a 6‐month exercise‐based weight loss program and returned for follow‐up at 18 months. Dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) was performed at baseline, 6, and 18 months. At baseline, subjects were aged 56.8 ± 5.4 years (mean ± s.d.), 10.0 ± 9.2 years postmenopausal, and BMI was 29.6 ± 4.0 kg/m2. They lost 3.9 ± 3.5 kg during the weight loss intervention. During follow‐up, they regained 2.9 ± 3.9 kg. Six months of weight loss resulted in a significant decrease in lumbar spine (LS) (?1.7 ± 3.5%; P = 0.002) and hip (?0.04 ± 3.5%; P = 0.03) BMD that was accompanied by an increase in a biomarker of bone resorption (serum C‐terminal telopeptide of type I collagen, CTX: 34 ± 54%; P = 0.08). However, weight regain was not associated with LS (0.05 ± 3.8%; P = 0.15) or hip (?0.6 ± 3.0%; P = 0.81) bone regain or decreased bone resorption (CTX: ?3 ± 37%; P = 0.73). The findings suggest that BMD lost during weight reduction may not be fully recovered with weight regain in hormone‐deficient, postmenopausal women. Future studies are needed to identify effective strategies to prevent bone loss during periods of weight loss.  相似文献

Recent revision of the fern diversity of the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and its dependencies (Marie Galante, Les Saintes and La Désirade) resulted in the listing of 292 native ferns and club mosses in 28 families and 88 genera, of which eight ferns are endemic to Guadeloupe and 20 taxa are only recorded from the Lesser Antilles. Additionally, 21 species have recently been found to be naturalized. Nineteen new combinations are made and a new hybrid is described. Many types from the Fée collection have been reassessed and a number of names are lecto‐ or neotypified. Studied specimens are cited and localities are provided. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 161 , 213–277.  相似文献

ObjectivePredominance of bone loss in cortical sites with relative preservation of trabecular bone, even in postmenopausal women, has been described in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). The aim of this study was to evaluate bone microarchitectural differences using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), trabecular bone score (TBS), and DXA-based 3-dimensional (3D) modeling (3D-DXA) between postmenopausal women diagnosed with PHPT (PM-PHPT) and healthy postmenopausal controls.MethodsThis retrospective study included 44 women with PM-PHPT (9 of whom had fractures) and 48 healthy women matched by age, body mass index, and years since menopause treated at Hospital Universitario Fundación Jiménez Díaz between 2008 and 2017. The bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine (LS), femoral neck, total hip (TH), and 1/3 radius was assessed using DXA, and trabecular volumetric BMD (vBMD), cortical vBMD, integral vBMD, cortical thickness, and cortical surface BMD at TH were assessed using a 3D-DXA software and TBS at LS.ResultsThe mean adjusted BMD values at LS, the femoral neck, and TH; TBS at LS; and TH 3D-DXA parameters (trabecular vBMD, integral vBMD, cortical thickness, and cortical surface BMD) were significantly reduced in women with PM-PHPT compared with those in the controls. However, differences in mean cortical vBMD were not statistically significant (P = .078). There were no significant differences in mean BMD, TBS, or the 3D-DXA parameters between patients with fractures and those without fractures. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D level appeared to be associated with TBS but not with DXA and 3D-DXA measurements.ConclusionPM-PHPT has significant involvement of the trabecular and cortical compartments of the bone, as determined by DXA, TBS, and 3D-DXA.  相似文献

Petioles from a susceptible cultivar (Désirèe) of Solanum tuberosum treated with a low‐molecular mass toxin, separated from culture fluid of Verticillium albo‐atrum, produced greater quantities of ethylene than did petioles of a tolerant cultivar (Home Guard). Pretreatment of leaflets from cv. Désirèe with silver thiosulphite, which inhibits perception of ethylene, prevented the chlorosis and necrosis normally associated with exposure to the toxin. Similarly, application of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) an inhibitor of aminocyclopropane‐1‐carboxylic acid (ACC) synthase, to petioles of cv. Désirèe reduced toxin‐induced ethylene synthesis and symptom development. The data indicate that, in part, Verticillium‐toxin acts through induction of ethylene biosynthesis in the host tissues, and different responses of susceptible and tolerant potato cultivars to V. albo‐atrum are the result of differential production of ethylene.  相似文献

Objective: On the basis of the clinical observations that bupropion facilitated weight loss, we investigated the efficacy and tolerability of this drug in overweight and obese adult women. Research Methods and Procedures: A total of 50 overweight and obese (body mass index: 28.0 to 52.6 kg/m2) women were included. The core component of the study was a randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled comparison for 8 weeks. Bupropion or placebo was started at 100 mg/d with gradual dose increase to a maximum of 200 mg twice daily. All subjects were prescribed a 1600 kcal/d balanced diet and compliance was monitored with food diaries. Responders continued the same treatment in a double‐blind manner for an additional 16 weeks to a total of 24 weeks. There was additional single‐blind follow‐up treatment for a total of 2 years. Results: Subjects receiving bupropion achieved greater mean weight loss (last‐observation‐carried‐forward analysis) over the first 8 weeks of the study (p = 0.0001): 4.9% ± 3.4% (n = 25) for bupropion treatment compared with 1.3% ± 2.4% (n = 25) for placebo treatment. For those who completed the 8 weeks, the comparison was 6.2% ± 3.1% (n = 18) vs. 1.6% ± 2.9% (n = 13), respectively(p = 0.0002), with 12 of 18 of the bupropion subjects (67%) losing over 5% of baseline body weight compared with 2 of 13 in the placebo group (15%; p = 0.0094). In the continuation phase, 14 bupropion responders who completed 24 weeks achieved weight loss of 12.9% ± 5.6% with fat accounting for 73.5% ± 3.7% of the weight lost and no change in bone mineral density as assessed by DXA. Bupropion was generally well‐tolerated in this sample. Discussion: Bupropion was more effective than placebo in achieving weight loss at 8 weeks in overweight and obese adult women in this preliminary study. Initial responders to bupropion benefited further in the continuation phase.  相似文献

Objective: To test a newly developed dual energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) method for abdominal fat depot quantification in subjects with anorexia nervosa (AN), normal weight, and obesity using CT as a gold standard. Design and Methods: 135 premenopausal women (overweight/obese: n = 89, normal‐weight: n = 27, AN: n = 19); abdominal visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and total adipose tissue (TAT) areas determined on CT and DXA. Results: There were strong correlations between DXA and CT measurements of abdominal fat compartments in all groups with the strongest correlation coefficients in the normal‐weight and overweight/obese groups. Correlations of DXA and CT VAT measurements were strongest in the obese group and weakest in the AN group. DXA abdominal fat depots were higher in all groups compared to CT, with the largest % mean difference in the AN group and smallest in the obese group. Conclusion: A new DXA technique is able to assess abdominal fat compartments including VAT in premenopausal women across a large weight spectrum. However, DXA measurements of abdominal fat were higher than CT, and this percent bias was most pronounced in the AN subjects and decreased with increasing weight, suggesting that this technique may be more useful in obese individuals.  相似文献

Objective: The goal was to identify correlates of adherence to a structured physical activity (PA) program. Research Methods and Procedures: Subjects were 136 8‐ to 12‐year‐old African‐American girls. Potential correlates at baseline were: 1) fitness index (FI: % body fat from DXA and cardiovascular fitness from treadmill test), and 2) self‐esteem, anxiety, attitude to school and teachers, relationship with parents, and interpersonal relations (Behavioral Assessment System for Children). The 10‐month PA program included 80 minutes of PA offered 5 days/wk. Regression tree classification was used to model attendance. Results: Six splits occurred (34% total variance explained). Less anxious subjects attended more often than highly anxious subjects (3 days/wk vs. 1.5 days/wk) did. Subjects with a healthier FI attended more often than those with a less healthy FI (3 days/wk vs. 0.5 days/wk) did. Younger subjects attended more often than older ones (3 days/wk vs. 2.5 days/wk) did. The next two splits were again with anxiety (3.5 days/wk vs. 3 days/wk) and FI (3 days/wk vs. 2.5 days/wk). Finally, subjects with higher levels of self‐esteem attended more often than those with lower levels (3.5 days/wk vs. 2 days/wk) did. Discussion: Subjects who were self‐confident, younger, fitter, and less anxious were more likely to participate regularly. This suggests that children who may be more likely to benefit from a PA program are less likely to participate. To enhance participation in PA programs, especially in older African‐American girls: 1) psychological concerns should be identified and addressed before enrollment, and 2) programs should be designed to be appealing to children of all fitness levels.  相似文献

We investigated the reproducibility of total and regional body composition measurements performed on a dual energy X-ray absorptiometer (DXA). A group of 38 women aged 21–81 (mean 52. 4) years was scanned twice with repositioning to determine intra-observer reproducibility of measurements of bone mineral density (BMD, g · cm−2), bone mineral content (BMC, g), lean mass (LM, kg) and fat mass (FM, kg) of the total body and of the major subregions of the body. In addition, the ability of the DXA machine to detect changes in LM and FM (simulated by placing 11.1 and 22.3 kg porcine lard on the body of 11 subjects) was examined. Coefficients of variations calculated from the root mean square averages of individual standard deviations were as follows (BMD, BMC, FM, LM): 1.4%, 1.1%, 1.4%, 1.7% (total body), 2.2%, 2.1%,-,- (head), 2.8%, 2.8%, 2.0%, 2.2% (trunk), 3.6%, 3.9%, 4.0%, 4.9% (arms), 2.7%, 1.3%, 2.6%, 2.8% (legs). Percentage fat (%fat) of exogenous lard was 81.3 (SD 3.5)% as assessed by the absorptiometer which corresponded well with the result of chemical analysis (82.8%). Estimated %fat of exogenous lard was not influenced by initial body mass or percentage body fat. Percentages of expected mean values with 11.1 kg lard placed on the body were 99.9 (SD 0.3) for body mass, 100.5 (SD 2.1) for LM, and 99.5 (SD 3.5) for FM. BMD was overestimated by 3.2% (P < 0.005) with 11.1 kg lard on the body. BMD as well as BMC increased significantly with 22.3␣kg lard on the body (P < 0.005). The results showed that BMD, BMC, LM, and FM of the total body were precisely estimated by the DXA machine used. Regional measurements were less precise. Changes in total body soft tissue composition were precisely and accurately estimated. The lard placed on the body falsely affected BMD and BMC measurements. Changes in body mass could have a similar effect. Accepted: 6 January 1997  相似文献

Dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) has become a common measurement of human body composition. However, obese subjects have been understudied largely due to weight and scan area restrictions. Newer DXA instruments allow for heavier subjects to be supported by the DXA scanner, but the imaging area is still smaller than the body size of some obese subjects. In this study, we determined the validity of an automated half‐scan methodology by comparing to the standard whole‐body scans in a cohort of obese volunteers. Fifty‐two subjects whose BMI >30 kg/m2 completed whole‐body iDXA (GE Lunar) scans. The resulting scans were analyzed in three ways: the standard whole‐body scan, total body estimated from the left side, and from the right side. Fat mass, nonbone lean mass, bone mineral content (BMC), and percent fat derived from each half scan were compared to the whole‐body scans. Total fat mass, nonbone lean mass, or percent fat was comparable for the whole‐body scans, left, and right side scans (>97% within individuals and >99.9% for the group). The BMC estimate using the right side scan was slightly but statistically higher than the whole‐body BMC (~30 g or 1%, P < 0.001), while the left side scan BMC estimate was lower than the whole‐body BMC by the same magnitude. No significant magnitude bias was found for any of the composition variables. We conclude that the new iDXA half‐body analysis in obese subjects appears to be closely comparable to whole‐body analysis for fat mass, nonbone lean mass, and percent fat.  相似文献

Objective: To assess the accuracy of body composition measurements by air displacement plethysmography and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) compared with DXA during weight loss. Research Methods and Procedures: Fifty‐six healthy but overweight participants, 34 women and 22 men (age, 52 ± 8.6 years; weight, 92.2 ± 11.6 kg; BMI, 33.3 ± 2.9 kg/m2) were studied in an outpatient setting before and after 6 months of weight loss (weight loss, 5.6 ± 5.5 kg). Subjects were excluded if they had initiated a new drug therapy within 30 days of randomization, were in a weight loss program, or took a weight loss drug within 90 days of randomization. Subjects were randomly assigned either to a self‐help program, consisting of two 20‐minute sessions with a nutritionist and provision of printed materials and other self‐help resources, or to attendance at meetings of a commercial program (Weight Watchers). Body composition was examined by each of the methods before and after weight loss. Results: BIA (42.4 ± 5.8%) underestimated percentage fat, whereas the BodPod (Siri = 51.7 ± 6.9%; Brozek = 48.5 ± 6.5%) overestimated percentage fat compared with DXA (46.1 ± 7.9%) before weight loss. Correlation coefficients for detecting changes in body composition between DXA and the other methods were relatively high, with Brozek Δfat mass (FM; r2 = 0.63), Siri FM (r2 = 0.65), tetrapolar BIA percentage fat (r2 = 0.57), and Tanita FM (r2 = 0.61) being the highest. Discussion: In conclusion, all of the methods were relatively accurate for assessing body composition compared with DXA, although there were biases. Furthermore, each of the methods was sensitive enough to detect changes with weight loss.  相似文献

This study investigates the age‐ and sex‐related patterns in vertebral bone mineral density (BMD) and the relationship between BMD and vertebral osteophytosis (VO), using a specialized peripheral densitometer in a skeletal sample excavated from the British medieval village Wharram Percy. A total of 58 individuals were divided by sex into three broad age categories (18–29, 30–49, 50+ years.). Each fourth intact vertebral centra was scored for VO and 5‐mm thick coronal sections scanned in a specialized peripheral densitometer (GE Lunar Piximus DXA). Changes in BMD associated with age, sex, and VO severity were examined in the whole vertebral section, a strictly trabecular region, and a primarily cortical region of bone separately. Significant change in vertebral BMD was found to occur by middle age with little or no statistical change in BMD between middle and old age. Females appear to suffer greater bone loss at an earlier age with no change in BMD between middle and old age, whereas males show a more steady loss of BMD across the age groups. The bone mineral content and BMD of the cortical region is higher in individuals with pronounced/severe osteophytosis. The unusual age‐ and sex‐related patterns of change in vertebral BMD at Wharram Percy are compared with the patterns of age‐related change from recent longitudinal population‐based studies. The results emphasize the different pattern of bone loss in young adulthood seen in trabecular regions of the skeleton and highlight the importance of consideration of degenerative joint disease in BMD studies. The influence of lifestyle factors on vertebral BMD in this medieval population is also discussed. Am J Phys Anthropol 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

We report on results from an Internet survey of sleeping habits in a Dutch population using the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ), supplemented with the Horne‐Östberg Morningness‐Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). The MCTQ was completed by 5,055 responders, of which 2,481 also completed the MEQ. MEQ score correlated well with the MCTQ assessment of time of mid‐sleep on free days (MSF; r=? 0.73) and on workdays (MSW; r=? 0.61). MEQ was more strongly correlated with MSF (50% of sleep time) than with sleep onset (0%), rise time (100%), or with any other percentile (10 to 40, 60% to 90%) of sleep on free days. The study shows that chronotype (based on MSF as measured by the MCTQ) strongly correlates with morningness‐eveningness (as measured by the MEQ). However, the MCTQ collects additional detailed information on sleep‐wake behavior under natural conditions.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the precision and accuracy of dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) for the measurement of total‐bone mineral density (TBMD), total‐body bone mineral (TBBM), fat mass (FM), and bone‐free lean tissue mass (LTM) in mice. Research Methods and Procedures: Twenty‐five male C57BL/6J mice (6 to 11 weeks old; 19 to 29 g) were anesthetized and scanned three times (with repositioning between scans) using a peripheral densitometer (Lunar PIXImus). Gravimetric and chemical extraction techniques (Soxhlet) were used as the criterion method for the determination of body composition; ash content was determined by burning at 600°C for 8 hours. Results: The mean intraindividual coefficients of variation (CV) for the repeated DXA analyses were: TBMD, 0.84%; TBBM, 1.60%; FM, 2.20%; and LTM, 0.86%. Accuracy was determined by comparing the DXA‐derived data from the first scan with the chemical carcass analysis data. DXA accurately measured bone ash content (p = 0.942), underestimated LTM (0.59 ± 0.05g, p < 0.001), and overestimated FM (2.19 ± 0.06g, p < 0.001). Thus, DXA estimated 100% of bone ash content, 97% of carcass LTM, and 209% of carcass FM. DXA‐derived values were then used to predict chemical values of FM and LTM. Chemically extracted FM was best predicted by DXA FM and DXA LTM [FM = ?0.50 + 1.09(DXA FM) ? 0.11(DXA LTM), model r2 = 0.86, root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.233 g] and chemically determined LTM by DXA LTM [LTM = ?0.14 + 1.04(DXA LTM), r2 = 0.99, RMSE = 0.238 g]. Discussion: These data show that the precision of DXA for measuring TBMD, TBBM, FM, and LTM in mice ranges from a low of 0.84% to a high of 2.20% (CV). DXA accurately measured bone ash content but overestimated carcass FM and underestimated LTM. However, because of the close relationship between DXA‐derived data and chemical carcass analysis for FM and LTM, prediction equations can be derived to more accurately predict body composition.  相似文献

Accurate methods for assessing body composition in subjects with obesity and anorexia nervosa (AN) are important for determination of metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors and to monitor therapeutic interventions. The purpose of our study was to assess the accuracy of dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) for measuring abdominal and thigh fat, and thigh muscle mass in premenopausal women with obesity, AN, and normal weight compared to computed tomography (CT). In addition, we wanted to assess the impact of hydration on DXA‐derived measures of body composition by using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). We studied a total of 91 premenopausal women (34 obese, 39 with AN, and 18 lean controls). Our results demonstrate strong correlations between DXA‐ and CT‐derived body composition measurements in AN, obese, and lean controls (r = 0.77–0.95, P < 0.0001). After controlling for total body water (TBW), the correlation coefficients were comparable. DXA trunk fat correlated with CT visceral fat (r = 0.51–0.70, P < 0.0001). DXA underestimated trunk and thigh fat and overestimated thigh muscle mass and this error increased with increasing weight. Our study showed that DXA is a useful method for assessing body composition in premenopausal women within the phenotypic spectrum ranging from obesity to AN. However, it is important to recognize that DXA may not accurately assess body composition in markedly obese women. The level of hydration does not significantly affect most DXA body composition measurements, with the exceptions of thigh fat.  相似文献

Osteoporosis, defined as decreased bone mineral density (BMD), poses patients in dangers for fracture risk and has become a major public health problem worldwide because of is associated morbidity, mortality and costs. Without doubt, early detection and timely intervention are important to successfully manage osteoporosis and its associated complications. The dual‐energy x‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the most popular and standard method to measure BMD. However, limitations including radiation exposure and availability restrict its application for osteoporosis screening among general population. In this study, we developed a simple method to detect human distal radius bone density based on near infrared (NIR) image system. Among 10 volunteers (including 5 young and 5 elderly participants) receiving bone density measurement using our NIR image system at the ultradistal part of bilateral distal radius, we demonstrated a strong correlation between the optical attenuation and BMD measured with DXA, which may facilitate predicting bone density status. We hope our potential NIR image system may open a new avenue for development of osteoporosis screening facilities and help in prevention of osteoporosis related fracture and its associated complications in the near future. Pearson's correlations between BMD values from the DXA and light intensity of NIR system.   相似文献

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the association of total and central adiposity with serum cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in lean and obese Portuguese children and adolescents. Research Methods and Procedures: A total of 87 girls (13.2 ± 1.6 years old, 29.9 ± 6.4% body fat [mean ± SD]) and 72 boys (13.2 ± 1.6 years old, 20.8 ± 9.9% body fat) volunteered for the study. Whole‐body composition and fat distribution, from DXA and anthropometry, and serum lipids, lipoproteins, and apolipoproteins were evaluated. Results: The sum of three trunk skinfolds (STS) was highly correlated with total trunk fat mass measured by DXA (p < 0.001). Body mass index, DXA‐measured percentage of body fat, trunk fat mass, STS, and the waist‐to‐height ratio were generally found to be associated with triacylglycerol, the ratio of total cholesterol (TC) to high density lipoprotein‐cholesterol (HDL‐C), low density lipoprotein‐cholesterol (LDL‐C), and apolipoprotein B levels, (significant age‐adjusted r between 0.16 and 0.27, p < 0.05). Body mass index, STS, and the waist circumference were also associated with HDL‐C (p < 0.05), whereas no body composition variable significantly correlated with TC or apolipoproteins A‐I. The STS was significantly correlated with HDL‐C (p < 0.01), TC/HDL‐C (p < 0.05), and apolipoproteins A‐I (p < 0.05) independently of whole‐body fatness. Obese subjects (n = 73) had higher TC, LDL‐C, TC/HDL‐C, and apolipoprotein B than did non‐obese subjects (n = 86), and significant associations between central adiposity and some lipid variables (triacylglycerol and HDL‐C) were found in obese children and adolescents that were not present in leaner individuals. Discussion: DXA‐ and anthropometry‐based whole‐body and central fat measures are associated with serum CVD risk factors in Portuguese boys and girls. Obese children and adolescents have a poorer lipid profile than do their leaner counterparts. Trunk skinfolds, which are easy to obtain even in large samples, predict CVD risk factors to the same extent as DXA‐based variables, in some cases, independently of total fatness.  相似文献

Charcoal rot (Macrophomina phaseolina) is a major disease of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Mexico. The use of germplasm combining high‐yield stability with resistance to drought and charcoal rot could reduce damage from this disease. In this study, we compared the Eberhart and Russell method and the Additive Main Effect and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) model plus biplot analysis for measuring grain yield (GY) and charcoal rot resistance (CHRR) stabilities in 98 F8 : 10 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between bean adapted to the tropics (BAT) 477 (resistant) × Pinto UI‐114 (susceptible). Experiments were conducted from 2007 to 2009 in Isla, Cotaxtla, Río Bravo and Díaz Ordaz, México, under irrigated or terminal drought conditions. anova detected significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) in GY and CHRR among environments, genotypes and genotype × environment interactions (GEI). Most RILs showed good responses to unfavourable environments based on GY (48) and CHRR (40). AMMI anova s for both traits showed that all sources of variation in the model accounted for approximately 49% of the total squared sum. For the first principal component (PC1), we found 13 RILs that were stable for GY, and for the second (PC2), we found 9 that were stable for GI. For CHRR, we detected 14 stable RILs (PC1) and eight (PC2). Biplot analysis showed the largest vectors for Díaz Ordaz (irrigated and drought, 2008), where the highest and most variable GYs were detected. The shortest vectors were found in Isla (drought, 2007) and Río Bravo (irrigated and drought, 2008), where the lowest and least variable GY were found. We found differential responses of RILs to locations, years and soil humidity conditions as well as significant GEI based on GY and CHRR. The two methods were complementary, and both gave us information to select stable, high‐yield germplasm associated with resistance to charcoal rot disease.  相似文献

Introduction

Osteoporosis can be a complication of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), but diagnosing spinal osteoporosis can be difficult since pathologic new bone formation interferes with the assessment of the bone mineral density (BMD). The aims of the current study were to investigate prevalence and risk factors for reduced BMD in a Swedish cohort of AS patients, and to examine how progressive ankylosis influences BMD with the use of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the lumbar spine in different projections.

Methods

Methods of assessment were questionnaires, back mobility tests, blood samples, lateral spine radiographs for syndesmophyte grading (mSASSS), DXA of the hip, radius and lumbar spine in anteroposterior (AP) and lateral projections with estimation of volumetric BMD (vBMD).

Results

AS patients (modified New York criteria), 87 women and 117 men, mean age 50 ± 13 years and disease duration 15 ± 11 years were included. According to World Health Organization (WHO) criteria 21% osteoporosis and 44% osteopenia was diagnosed in patients > = 50 years. Under age 50 BMD below expected range for age was found in 5%. Interestingly lateral lumbar DXA showed significantly lower BMD and revealed significantly more cases with osteoporosis as compared with AP DXA. Lumbar vBMD was not different between sexes, but women had significantly more lumbar osteoporosis measured with AP DXA (P < 0.001). Men had significantly higher mSASSS (P < 0.001). Low BMD was associated with high age, disease duration, mSASSS, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI), inflammatory parameters and low body mass index (BMI). Increasing mSASSS correlated significantly with decreasing lateral and volumetric lumbar BMD, while AP lumbar BMD showed tendency to increase.

Conclusions

Osteoporosis and osteopenia is common in AS and associated with high disease burden. Lateral and volumetric lumbar DXA are more sensitive than AP DXA in detecting osteoporosis and are less affected by syndesmophyte formation.  相似文献
