Shell outlines of 202 extant cytheroidean ostracods were analysed in dorsal, lateral, and posterior views by elliptic Fourier analysis. The results obtained confirm that the exterior morphology is related to ecological factors as well as phylogenetic constraints. Phytal species living on tall seagrass and benthic species burrowing in sediments are characterized and differentiated from the species crawling on sediments by the presence of slender shells with tapered venters. With reference to reconstruction of ancestral state of outline traits on the molecular phylogeny, the hypothetical ancestor of cytheroidean ostracods is presumed to have had an average-shaped shell. Morphological plasticity of the shell outline was observed in many families. The phytal species living on tall seagrass appear to have evolved convergently with species from other habitats, acquiring slim shell outlines during the Cenozoic period. Podarcis bocagei and Podarcis carbonelli are two lacertid species endemic to the western Iberian Peninsula, and both show head size and shape sexual dimorphism. We studied immature and adult head sexual dimorphism and analysed ontogenetic trajectories of head traits with body and head size, aiming to shed light on the proximate mechanisms involved. Immatures were much less dimorphic than adults, but geometric morphometric techniques revealed that head shape sexual differences are already present at this stage. Males and females differed in allometry of all head characters with body size, with males showing a disproportionate increase of head size and dimensions. On the other hand, head dimensions and head shape changed with increasing head size following similar trends in both sexes, possibly indicating developmental restrictions. Species boundaries in Asian leaf turtles of the genus Cyclemys are difficult to define on the basis of morphology, primarily because many populations exhibit considerable ontogenetic variation in shell and head coloration. Two recent molecular phylogenetic hypotheses of Cyclemys species relationships, based largely on market and pet-trade samples of uncertain provenance, were highly incongruent. We used historical DNA methods to sequence fragments of the mitochondrial cytochrome  b gene from eight type specimens of Cyclemys (including one collected by Alfred Russel Wallace), and phylogenetically placed these type sequences into the context of published cytochrome  b variation. Our phylogenetic hypothesis supports the recognition of four named species ( Cyclemys atripons , Cyclemys dentata , Cyclemys oldhamii , and C. pulchristriata ), as well as a fifth species of unknown geographical provenance obtained from the Hong Kong pet trade. The taxonomy of the New World species of the genus Trichadenotecnum is revised. A total of 44 species, including 29 new species, were treated. These species are classified into 12 monophyletic species groups, eight of them newly proposed here. Two species previously assigned to Trichadenotecnum , T. pichincha New & Thornton and T. sylvaticum Turner, are recognized as not belonging to this genus. Phylogenetic relationships among 16 previously and presently proposed species groups are estimated based on a data matrix of 58 morphological characters. Trees from these analyses support monophyly of Trichadenotecnum and the proposed species groups. The New World species were divided into three major clades. A new species of the hadrosaurine hadrosaurid Gryposaurus was discovered in the late Campanian Kaiparowits Formation of southern Utah. Gryposaurus monumentensis , sp. nov. is distinguished from other Gryposaurus species by possessing a more robust skull, enlarged clover-shaped prongs on the predentary oral margin, an anteroposteriorly narrow infratemporal fenestra, and other autapomorphies plausibly associated with feeding adaptations. The derived morphology revealed in G. monumentensis necessitates revision of the generic diagnosis of Gryposaurus , including the addition of synapomorphies that further aid in distinguishing this taxon from Kritosaurus . A revised phylogenetic analysis places Gryposaurus within a monophyletic clade that includes Brachylophosaurus and Maiasaura . Gryposaurus monumentensis represents the most southern example of Gryposaurus , and underlines the remarkable diversification and long duration of this genus. Based on the phylogenetic, geographical, and stratigraphic evidence at hand, Gryposaurus was the most diverse genus within Hadrosaurinae; it also possessed one of the largest geographical and stratigraphic distributions, spanning more than five million years of the Campanian, and ranging from Alberta in the north to Utah (and possibly Texas) in the south.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 151 , 351–376.  相似文献

Platycopid ostracods such as the genus Keijcyoidea Malz, 1981 (Family Cytherellidae) have a unique body plan and are regarded as a phylogenetically ancient lineage. Their ontogeny, which is important in considering phylogenetical relationships, is very poorly known except for the growth of the carapace; there are nine instars including the adult, as in other podocopan groups. All appendages in all immature instars (A-8 to A-1) of Keijcyoidea infralittoralis Tsukagoshi, Okada & Horne, 2006 are described and illustrated here. The anlagen of the copulatory organs and the sexual dimorphism of carapace size appear in the sixth (A-3) instar, whereas sexual dimorphism in both the fifth and the sixth limbs, a distinctive feature of adults, is not clearly evident until the eighth (A-1) instar. Appendages are added at the moults between the second (A-7) and third (A-6), and between the fifth (A-4) and sixth (A-3) instars. The seventh limb, which platycopid ostracods have lost in the adult stage, is observed as an anlage in the sixth (A-3) and seventh (A-2) instars. During the other moults, there are no significant changes to the body plan. The cranial morphology of Lemur catta and of the five species of the genus Eulemur is investigated here by landmark identification and Procrustes superimpositions. This geometrical morphometric method makes it possible to describe pure shape differences independent of size effects, and to quantify differences between specimens. The aim of this study is to determine whether the morphological disparity of lemur skulls is constrained by the environment and/or by the group's phylogenetic history. First, Procrustes residuals are analysed by principal component analysis and the scatter-plots interpreted against the geographical distributions of taxa to determine whether morphology is correlated with geography. Then, a morphological distance tree is computed and compared with various cladograms reported in the literature to test for any correlation between morphology and phylogeny. Morphological disparity is found to be closely correlated with geographical distribution but independent of phylogeny. Rensch's rule states that degree of sexual dimorphism increases with body size in species with larger males, and decreases with body size in those with larger females. To test this rule, we assessed the pattern of sexual size dimorphism in tinamous using a comparative analysis of independent contrasts. Tinamous are a monophyletic group of primitive birds comprising at least 47 ground dwelling species with prominent or exclusive paternal care of eggs and offspring. Although the size of females exceeded that of males in most considered species, we found an isometric relationship between males and females, instead of the negative allometric one predicted by Rensch's rule. Previous studies in Strigiformes and Falconiformes found positive allometric and isometric relationships respectively, and, considering these findings with our results, we conclude that Rensch's rule is not supported by birds with exclusively female-biased sexual dimorphism in size.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80 , 519–527  相似文献

A new eschrichtiid, Eschrichtioides gastaldii gen. nov., comb. nov. , is established based on a specimen previously assigned to Balaenoptera gastaldii Portis, 1885. The holotype is from the Early Pliocene of north-east Italy. It represents a fossil mysticete closely related to the living grey whale, Eschrichtius robustus . Comparative morphology and phylogenetic analysis support the monophyly of Eschrichtiidae and Cetotherium -like mysticetes and a sister group relationship between this clade and Balaenopteridae. Eschrichtiid fossils previously described are all from the Pleistocene and Late Pliocene while Eschrichtioides gastaldii is from the Early Pliocene. The recognition of this new eschrichtiid genus suggests that the Mediterranean trophic web of the Early Pliocene was more complex than at present and that the Neogene mysticete family-level biodiversity of the Mediterranean was higher than that currently observed in this basin.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 153 , 161–186.  相似文献

Many elements of the flora and fauna of New Zealand's South Island show disjunct distributions with conspecific populations or closely-related species that occur in the north-west and south separated by a central gap. Three events have been implicated to account for this pattern: Pleistocene glaciations, Pliocene mountain building, or displacement along the Alpine fault, the border of the Pacific and Australian plates stretching diagonally across the South Island from south-west to north-east that formed during the Miocene. Disjunct distributions of species level taxa are probably too young to be due to Alpine fault vicariance. It has therefore been suggested that the biogeographical impact of the Alpine fault, if any, should be apparent on deeper phylogenetic levels. We tested this hypothesis by reconstructing the phylogenetic relationships of the hydrobiid gastropods of New Zealand based on mitochondrial DNA fragments of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (CO I ) and 16S rDNA. The creno- and stygobiont species of this family are typically poor dispersers. Therefore, ancient patterns of distribution may be conserved. The phylogenetic reconstructions were in accordance with the Alpine fault hypothesis uniting genera occurring on either side of the fault. A marked sexual dimorphism is often observed in arthropods species in which males perform precopulatory mate guarding. It is generally thought to reflect the influence of sexual selection. Until now, sexual dimorphisms associated with mate guarding have mainly been qualitatively described. However, assessing the effects of sexual selection on sexual dimorphims requires a preliminary quantitative assessment of differences in morphology between sexes. Using Fourier analyses, we tested if morphological dimorphisms could be quantitatively assessed in the isopod Asellus aquaticus . In addition, we checked whether sexual dimorphism in shape was exclusively related to mate guarding through considering characters that are not, a priori , implicated in mating behaviour. To assess the potential role of sexual selection in shaping morphology, we then examined how dimorphic characters could influence males' pairing success. Three characters (pleotelson, paraeopods 4 and 5) differed significantly in shape between males and females. In addition, two characters (pleotelson and paraeopods 4) differed in shape between guarding males and non-guarding males, with the latter being closer in shape to females. The study of biogeographical patterns of the Neotropical humid montane forest avifauna has been prevented due to the lack of phylogenetic hypotheses for most taxa, and to the paucity of detailed studies about the geographical distribution for most of the species. Distributional patterns of this avifauna were explored by integrating predictive distributional models and Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE). Distributional maps were generated using the Genetic Algorithms for Rule Set Prediction for 442 species; this information was transformed into a data matrix for analysis with PAE. Hierarchical information corresponding to the genus level was incorporated to help resolve the relationships between areas. A strict consensus cladogram showed a clear separation between the Mesoamerican and South American avifaunas. Within the Mesoamerican clade, three geographically structured groups were obtained, whereas the South American clade showed a polytomy of three groups, with two of them, the South Andean Yungas and the Tepuis, located outside the main clade. The third group is a well resolved clade, including areas from eastern Panama and northern Venezuela to central Bolivia. Adult butterflies feed from a variety of substrates and have appropriate adaptations. We examined proboscis morphology in a community of fruit-feeding butterflies (Nymphalidae) in a tropical forest in Uganda. These data were supplemented with behavioural observations and measurements of intake rate on natural and artificial substrates. We found no sexual dimorphism in proboscis morphology even though puddling behaviour is usually performed by males. Two main feeding techniques could be distinguished on the basis of behaviour and morphology: the piercing technique, typically found in Charaxinae, and the sweeping technique employed by both Nymphalinae and Satyrinae. Studies of natural and sexual selection in wild populations of Drosophila have historically provided strong inference for the maintenance of inversion polymorphism. Analysis of geographical variation in the Drosophila robusta chromosomal data collected over more than 50 years from 133 natural populations across eastern North America has confirmed several north–south and east–west clines in the frequencies of some gene arrangements and linked arrangement combinations. Patterns of geographical variation, including several north–south clines, revealed by regression and spatial autocorrelation analyses are concordant with palaeoclimatic shifts, Pleistocene glaciations and historical changes in the composition of North American forest communities. Because D. robusta is a sap-breeder, using the microbe-infested sap exudates of a number of deciduous tree species in which they carry out their life cycle, shifts in climate and palaeovegetation types since the formation of the eastern deciduous forests in the Miocene are hypothesized to be major factors influencing patterns of inversion polymorphisms across the range of this drosophilid species. The repeated occurrence of similar morphologies in organisms from similar habitats provides good evidence of convergent selection, and convergent patterns of evolutionary change. In lizards, a flattened morphology has often been noted; however, whether this trait is convergent in specific habitats has never been tested using phylogenetic methods. The present study examined patterns of morphological convergence in 18 species of tropical Lygosomine skinks from three broad habitat categories (generalist, leaf litter-dwelling, and rock-using species). In general, although there where relatively few morphological differences of species from different habitats, phylogenetic analyses revealed that rock-using species have consistently and repeatedly evolved a dorsoventrally flattened head and body. Tail autotomy and regeneration are less known in Sphenodon ('Reptilia': Rhynchocephalia) than in Squamata. We examined museum specimens, Sphenodon guntheri ( N  = 8) and Sphenodon punctatus ( N  = 172), wild Sphenodon punctatus ( N  = 19) and Sphenodon sp. skeletons ( N  = 8). In S. punctatus , unlike in typical Squamata, sexes had similar relative (intact) tail lengths, and regeneration frequencies; tail and body growth was isometric. Tail breakage was usually intravertebral, usually followed by ablation of a variably sized terminal vertebral piece, partly deviating from lizards. Hypothetically, imperfect autotomy results from sphenodon's primitiveness. As in squamates, tail-losers were morphologically more left-side dominant than tail-retainers. Individual directional asymmetries in digit morphology and in digit injury were correlated (in lizards observed only at population level); tail-losers had more fluctuating asymmetry but their exclusion did not facilitate morphological taxonomic distinctions (no 'Seligmann effect'). In S. punctatus , extents and directions of sexual dimorphism paralleled differences between tail-retainers and tail-losers, females resembling tail-losers, also accounting for character interdependence (developmental constraints; employing a method similar to phylogenetic contrasts). The variation in the location of tail injury was correlated with the continuum of variation between injured and intact (pholidotic) morphotypes. The evolutionary history of bioluminescence and iridescence in myodocopid ostracods was estimated by phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA sequences. The inferred phylogeny of the myodocopids suggests that the common ancestor of Myodocopida evaluated in this study exhibits iridescence. This type of light emission was once lost and recaptured independently in the descendant lineages. Bioluminescent species also evolved from non-luminous ancestral species. In the suborder Myodocopina, all the bioluminescent species form a monophyletic group, suggesting that bioluminescence evolved only once. Patterns of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and cranial dimorphism are well documented. However, limited examinations exist of the contrasts in the patterns and nature of dimorphism across body regions (e.g. cranium, pelvis), particularly when these regions have different sex-specific functions (e.g. display in mating, locomotion, and reproduction). Using landmark-based morphometric techniques, we investigated size and shape dimorphism variation in the crania and pelves of two closely-related fox species within the genus Urocyon . Although we found no significant size and shape dimorphism in the crania of either species, we did find significant dimorphism in the pelvis: its size was dimorphic in Urocyon littoralis (but not in Urocyon cinereoargenteus ) and its shape was dimorphic in both species (though more pronounced in U. littoralis ). The observation of greater dimorphism in the pelvis than in the cranium suggests that factors such as offspring size and locomotor mode play a greater role in sexual dimorphism than simple 'whole body' allometric affects associated with dimorphism in body size.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 339–353.  相似文献
