We present phylogenetic analyses of the lizard genus Diplodactylus subgenus Strophurus using 1646 aligned positions of mitochondrial DNA sequences containing 893 parsimony-informative characters for samples of 12 species of Strophurus and 19 additional Australian gecko species. Sequences from three protein-coding genes (ND1, ND2 and COI) and eight intervening transfer RNA genes were examined using parsimony, maximum-likelihood and Bayesian analyses. Species of Strophurus appeared to form a monophyletic group with the possible exception of S. taenicauda . Strophurus has evolved two distinct defence/display characteristics: caudal glands, which expel an unpalatable substance, and striking mouth colours. Caudal glands appeared to have arisen once in a common ancestor of Strophurus , with dermal augmentation of caudal glands characterizing a subclade within the subgenus. Evolution of yellow and dark-blue mouth colours in Strophurus occurred in the context of diurnal activity and may be interpreted as an augmentation of defensive behavioural displays. Molecular divergence suggests that arboreality evolved in a common ancestor of Oedura and Strophurus approximately 29 Mya and that the caudal glands of Strophurus arose approximately 25 Mya.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 123–138.  相似文献

The two sibling ant species Temnothorax nylanderi and Temnothorax crassispinus are widely distributed throughout deciduous forests in Europe. Their resemblance in morphology and similar ecological requirements suggest that they evolved from the same ancestral species in different glacial refugia and re-immigrated into Central Europe after the last ice age. Here, we show that the two species are parapatrically distributed in south-eastern Germany and hybridize along a narrow contact zone close to the continental divide. Phylogeographical data based on the mitochondrial genes cytochrome oxidase subunit I and cytochrome b suggest that the dominant haplotypes for T. nylanderi and T. crassispinus might have diverged already 1.5–2 Mya. Intraspecific variability is extremely low in both species, which might be explained by severe bottlenecks during rapid postglacial expansion into Central Europe.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 223–234.  相似文献

An endemic group of Malagasy spiders (Araneae: Archaeidae: Eriauchenius ) called the gracilicollis group is revised. The monophyly and phylogenetic relationships of the gracilicollis group are tested based on morphological characters. Archaeid spiders of Madagascar have evolved varying degrees of elongation in the cephalic area. Historically, it was believed that the extremely elongated cephalic area had evolved only once. These morphological data support the monophyly of the gracilicollis group and suggest that the elongated cephalic area has evolved more than once. All 14 species from the gracilicollis group are described and keyed, of which nine are new species: Eriauchenius ambre sp. nov. , Eriauchenius anabohazo sp. nov. , Eriauchenius borimontsina sp. nov. , Eriauchenius griswoldi sp. nov. , Eriauchenius halambohitra sp. nov. , Eriauchenius lavatenda sp. nov. , Eriauchenius namoroka sp. nov. , Eriauchenius spiceri sp. nov. and Eriauchenius voronakely sp. nov . The morphology of the gracilicollis group is examined in detail and figures of the male and female genitalia are presented. The distributions of the gracilicollis group species are presented and discussed and higher species group relationships within the Archaeidae are discussed.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 152 , 255–296.  相似文献

Mechanical and morphological studies of Plectocomia himalayana (subtribe Plectocomiinae) revealed characteristics that differ strongly from species of subtribe Calaminae ( Calamus and Daemonorops ). In species of Calaminae tested previously, the contribution of the leaf sheath drastically increases stiffness in juvenile axes and towards the apex of older plants. In P. himalayana the relative contribution of the leaf sheath to axis stiffness is less and leaf sheath senescence does not strongly reduce axial stiffness as observed in Calamus and Daemonorops . Natural aerial branching, only described in Korthalsia and Laccosperma among rattans, is common in P. himalayana . Aerial branching and adventitious roots occur frequently along old stems allowing autonomy of stems, following mechanical injury and promoting vegetative propagation. The climbing habit is known to have evolved at least twice within the Calamoideae. The results observed here suggest that climbing habits may differ in detail and that different 'climbing strategies' may have evolved within the subfamily Calamoideae resulting from: (1) variable stem flexibility, (2) the variable mechanical role of the leaf sheath ( Calamus–Daemonorops ) and (3) production of branches and aerial roots conferring a higher degree of architectural plasticity ( Plectocomia ).  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 83–91.  相似文献

Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was used to characterize genetic diversity of the endangered Burnt Orchid, Neotinea (formerly Orchis ) ustulata . Fingerprinting of Estonian and British populations revealed surprisingly little genetic differentiation between populations but larger amounts of diversity within populations, especially in Britain. The resulting mean F st value of 0.51 is unusually high for an orchid species. Much of the variation follows a west–east cline across Europe, whereas the much-discussed early- and late-flowering taxa of N. ustulata are considered insufficiently distinct to be viewed as separate subspecies. The later flowering N. ustulata var. aestivalis probably evolved independently on two or three occasions, each time diverging from the earlier flowering nominate race. The identity of the genes underpinning phenology in the species, and the potential selective advantages of phenological divergence, merit further study. Overall genetic diversity within populations is sufficiently high to render impoverishment an unlikely cause of their recent, precipitous decline.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 87 , 13–25.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers and measurements were recorded in 47 individuals of ten taxa of Primula , representing eight species and two subspecies from ten populations. The basic numbers of chromosomes were x  = 8, 9 or 11, and they were mostly metacentric, medium-long to medium-small, ranging in length from c . 3.6 µm to 1.6 µm. Diploid chromosome numbers of 2 n  = 2 x  = 24 and 22 were scored for the first time in P. loeseneri Kitag. and P. prenantha Balf. & Sm., respectively. A new ploidy level of 2 n  = 4 x  = 44 was found in P. burmanica Balf. & King. The recorded diploid numbers of the remaining species confirmed earlier reports. Interspecific variability in chromosome numbers was correlated with heterogeneity in their mean length. Comparison of the data with those in the literature revealed that the observed variability of chromosomal characters was compatible with the other taxonomic criteria and supports the current taxonomic delimitation. Chromosomal variation at the diploid level is the predominant feature in Primula evolution, and allopatric speciation has played a major role in its specific diversity. Subgen. Aleuritia could represent the main clade from which the other subgenera have evolved. The origin of the chromosome numbers, geographical distribution and evolution of the species were assessed, and the parallel polyphyletic mode of evolution in the genus was confirmed.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 150 , 211–219.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers and morphology in 22 populations belonging to 11 taxa of Aconitum subgenus Lycoctonum (Ranunculaceae) from China were studied. Some taxa were diploid, with 2 n  = 16, but four species and two varieties were found to be tetraploid, with 2 n  = 32. They are concentrated in the Hengduan Mountains region in south-west China, indicating that polyploidy could have played an important role in the speciation of the subgenus in this region, one of the areas of the world with a high concentration of endemic species. The relationships of some of the species are discussed.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 150 , 343–353.  相似文献

The evolution of aquatic prey-capture strategies in snakes has been suggested as a model system for the study of convergence. However, hypotheses of correlated evolution of prey-capture strategy with different aspects of foraging niche have never been tested quantitatively. Whereas a considerable amount of data is available for North American species, data for European species are scarce. In this study we combine original data on prey-capture strategies and strike velocities for European natricines with data for North American Natricinae obtained from the literature. We did not find any evidence for correlated evolution between prey-capture strategy and strike velocity with diet, but there was a significant correlation with prey density. Thus, our study suggests that prey density, rather than diet, played an important role in the evolution of the different prey-capture strategies and strike velocities of natricine snakes.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 73–83.  相似文献

This study encompasses 25 chromosome counts of 18 species in the subtribe Artemisiinae (tribe Anthemideae) of the family Asteraceae, from Mongolia. Most (15 species) belong to Artemisia , the largest genus of the subtribe, whereas the others come from two genera very closely related to it: Ajania (two species) and Neopallasia (one species). Eleven counts are new reports, three are not consistent with previous reports and the remainder confirm scanty earlier information. The majority of the species have x  = 9 as their basic chromosome number, but there are some taxa with x  = 8. Ploidy levels range from 2 x to 6 x . The presence of B-chromosomes was detected in Ajania fruticulosa .  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 150 , 203–210.  相似文献

Species-level phylogeny of the Butterfly tribe Argynnini is established based on 141 characters derived from wing and genitalia morphology of both sexes. The Argynnini can be divided into three subtribes; Yrameina comprising Yramea and Boloria s . l ., Argynnina comprising Prokuekenthaliella , Issoria , Brenthis , and all the 'large fritillary' species joined in the genus Argynnis s . l . and a new subtribe Euptoietina comprising only the genus Euptoieta . The classical genus Issoria s . l . is polyphyletic regarding Yramea and possibly paraphyletic regarding the two Afrotropic species baumanni and hanningtoni ; these two species are tentatively transferred to the old genus/subgenus Prokuekenthaliella . Surprisingly, one Afrotropic species, Issoria smaragdifera is closely related to the East Palaearctic Issoria species. A revised classification of Argynnini is proposed based on the obtained phylogeny. Studies of larval host plants based on the obtained phylogeny suggest that the ancestral Argynnini used Passiflora and Violaceae, but already the ancestor of Yrameina + Argynnina was probably specialized on Violaceae. Whereas the Boloria species have turned to other food plants such as Dryas , Vaccinium and Salix on several occasions, only Brenthis among the Argynnina use other host plants than Viola (mainly Rosaceae). The habit of laying eggs away from the food plant has probably evolved twice within Argynnina.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 89 , 627–673.  相似文献

We investigated the hybrid origin of × Crepidiastrixeris denticulato-platyphylla using RAPDs and ITS sequence data. The putative parents Paraixeris denticulata and Crepidiastrum platyphyllum represent separate species, irrespective of geographical origin. The occurrence of species specific RAPD markers from P. denticulata and C. platyphyllum in × C. denticulato-platyphylla established unambiguously a hybrid origin between the two taxa. This was in line with the occurrence of a combination of morphological characters such as plant habit and floret numbers. The parent taxa differed from each other by 7 nucleotide substitutions and 2 indel events in the ITS region. The hybrids showed sequence additivity and most likely represent F1 plants, with the exception of two plants which were of possible F2 origin, possessing either the ITS sequences of one parent only, or one predominant ITS type. The hybrids occurred in two out of three localities where the parents occurred sympatrically. This fact, together with the short life-span of the plants, suggests that × C. denticulato-platyphylla exists as a result of repeated, frequent hybridization between the parent species.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 333–343.  相似文献

Exploitation may lead to the breakdown of obligate species-specific mutualisms. However, the mutualism between Roridula (plants) and Pameridea (hemipterans) is often exploited by spiders. The aim of the present study was to determine when the exploiters became associated with the Roridula-Pameridea mutualism. The phylogenetic and geographical associations between Roridula and Pameridea are documented and the distribution patterns of Roridula and exploiters are overlaid to see how closely they correlate. A geographical discontinuity in Roridulas ' range divides both the host plants and associated hemipterans into two sister species so that each hemipteran species is associated with a different plant species. This suggests that Roridula was associated with Pameridea before fragmentation/vicariance events split the genus, allowing allopatric speciation. By contrast, Roridula is only associated with exploiters in parts of its current range. This suggests that exploiters are unable to traverse the disjunctions in Roridulas' distribution and that they only developed associations with the mutualism after vicariance events. It is hypothesized that Pameridea and Roridula were closely associated for a long period before the invasion of nonmutualists. The absence of associated nonmutualist species may have helped facilitate the evolution of an obligate interaction between Roridula and Pameridea .  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 89 , 541–549.  相似文献

The endemic land snail genus Mandarina of the oceanic Bonin Islands shows exceptionally diverse morphological and ecological traits. Previous studies have already provided evidence that speciation on different islands of the three main archipelagos was such that similar ecotypes evolved independently in different lineages and islands. Here we present data to show that the same species can have different ecotypes. As most of the characters involved are inherited, then variation between ecotypes must represent genetic differences between populations. We then show that the radiation on the Bonin Islands is derived from a single colonization event, and use a mitochondrial phylogeny to provide evidence for a burst of cladogenesis soon after colonization. As divergent selection has previously been implicated in causing differences between Mandarina species, and theory predicts that most of the speciation should have taken place early in their history, then the study adds to the evidence for an adaptive radiation by ecological speciation in Mandarina . However, while the diversity of ecotypes present at each site is dependent on the regime of natural selection and competition, geography still must have an important role.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 269–282.  相似文献

The utility of maintaining distinct macroevolutionary and microevolutionary theory has long been debated. Although population and quantitative genetics provide an extensive list of microevolutionary forces that might explain macroevolutionary trends, studies of these processes are temporally limited and may fail to fully explain macroevolutionary patterns. To understand the relationship between the macroevolutionary pattern and microevolutionary forces, we must first understand how different populations respond to a given novel environment over hundreds or even thousands of generations. This study details the tempo of fitness gain over 2000 generations in four replicate lineages from each of five different ancestral Escherichia coli clones. Adaptive tempo was measured in the evolved lineages and ancestry was a significant source of variation in that tempo. Microevolutionary theory suggests that adaptive tempo should be proportional to the distance from an optimum phenotype. Demographic fitness measures allowed estimation of the ancestral distance from an optimum in the present study. Ancestral distance from an optimum was significantly related to adaptive tempo but it did not account for all of the observed variation. This suggests the existence of both ancestor and clade specific constraints. Understanding the role of such constraints is critical to both microevolutionary and macroevolutionary theory.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 403–411.  相似文献

Evolution of epiphytes in Davalliaceae and related ferns   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The evolution of epiphytes in Davalliaceae was investigated by field observations and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Field studies revealed that in Davalliaceae and related ferns, epiphytes in a broad sense are classified into climber, secondary hemi-epiphyte, and obligate epiphyte, based on combinations of the places (ground vs. tree) of inferred spore germination and sporophyte growth. Some species of Davalliaceae have multiple life forms, i.e. secondary hemi-epiphyte and obligate epiphyte, whereas others are obligate epiphytes. Phylogenetic trees obtained from rbcL and accD gene sequences supported that secondary hemi-epiphytic Oleandra is sister to the epiphytic Davalliaceae and polygrammoid ferns. Analyses of life form evolution based on the phylogenetic relationships suggested that obligate epiphytes of the Davalliaceae and polygrammoid ferns evolved from secondary hemi-epiphytes, or less likely from climbers. We hypothesized a scenario for the evolution of life forms in Davalliaceae and related groups that involves successive changes in rhizome habit, root function, and germination place. Rhizome dorsiventrality and scale morphology, shared by climbers, secondary hemi-epiphytes, and obligate epiphytes examined, may be other innovations for the ferns to have evolved into epiphytes.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 495–510.  相似文献

Few operational methods exist for delimiting species boundaries, and these usually require sampling strategies that are unrealistic for widespread organisms that occur at low densities. Here we apply molecular, morphological and ecological species delimitation criteria to a wide-ranging, fragmented group of Asian green pitvipers, the Popeia popeiorum complex. A mitochondrial DNA phylogeny for the group indicates two well-differentiated clades, corresponding mainly to northern and southern parts of its range. Strong phylogeographical structure within each clade suggests isolation in forest refugia during the Pliocene and a southward colonization of the Sunda islands during the Pleistocene. Multivariate analysis of morphological characters reveals a generally conserved pattern of geographical variation, incongruent with the recovered phylogenetic history. We compare groups delineated by mtDNA variation to morphological and ecological divisions in the complex, and discuss the implications of these for the taxonomy of the group. Discordance between species boundaries inferred from different criteria suggests that combining independent sources of data provides the most reliable estimation of species boundaries in organisms that are difficult to sample in large numbers.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 87 , 343–364.  相似文献
