When encoding yields remembering: insights from event-related neuroimaging.   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
To understand human memory, it is important to determine why some experiences are remembered whereas others are forgotten. Until recently, insights into the neural bases of human memory encoding, the processes by which information is transformed into an enduring memory trace, have primarily been derived from neuropsychological studies of humans with select brain lesions. The advent of functional neuroimaging methods, such as positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), has provided a new opportunity to gain additional understanding of how the brain supports memory formation. Importantly, the recent development of event-related fMRI methods now allows for examination of trial-by-trial differences in neural activity during encoding and of the consequences of these differences for later remembering. In this review, we consider the contributions of PET and fMRI studies to the understanding of memory encoding, placing a particular emphasis on recent event-related fMRI studies of the Dm effect: that is, differences in neural activity during encoding that are related to differences in subsequent memory. We then turn our attention to the rich literature on the Dm effect that has emerged from studies using event-related potentials (ERPs). It is hoped that the integration of findings from ERP studies, which offer higher temporal resolution, with those from event-related fMRI studies, which offer higher spatial resolution, will shed new light on when and why encoding yields subsequent remembering.  相似文献

An age-related ‘positivity’ effect has been identified, in which older adults show an information-processing bias towards positive emotional items in attention and memory. In the present study, we examined this positivity bias by using a novel paradigm in which emotional and neutral distractors were presented along with emotionally valenced targets. Thirty-five older and 37 younger adults were asked during encoding to attend to emotional targets paired with distractors that were either neutral or opposite in valence to the target. Pupillary responses were recorded during initial encoding as well as a later incidental recognition task. Memory and pupillary responses for negative items were not affected by the valence of distractors, suggesting that positive distractors did not automatically attract older adults’ attention while they were encoding negative targets. Additionally, the pupil dilation to negative items mediated the relation between age and positivity in memory. Overall, memory and pupillary responses provide converging support for a cognitive control account of positivity effects in late adulthood and suggest a link between attentional processes and the memory positivity effect.  相似文献

The neural correlates of memory encoding have been studied by contrasting neural activity elicited by items at the time of learning according to whether they were later remembered or forgotten [1]. Previous studies have focused on regions where neural activity is greater for subsequently remembered items [2-8]. Here, we describe regions where activity is greater for subsequently forgotten items. In two experiments that employed the same incidental learning task, activity in an overlapping set of cortical regions (posterior cingulate, inferior and medial parietal, and dorsolateral prefrontal) was associated with failure on a subsequent memory test.  相似文献

In 7–8 and 9–10-years old children, we studied event-related potentials (ERPs) during paired comparison of non-verbalizable visuospatial stimuli presented at an interval of 1.5–1.8 s. Age-related differences were found in the involvement of various cortical areas in the formation and retention of a short-term memory trace of the reference stimulus and during comparison of the short-term trace with the test stimulus presented. In both age groups, working memory was associated with an elevation of the amplitude of the sensory-specific N1 component in the visual cortical areas. Age-related differences in the processing of sensory-specific characteristics of a stimulus were the greatest in the ERPs to the test stimulus: at the age of 9–10, the N1 component amplitude was significantly increased in all caudal leads and, in the occipital and inferior temporal leads, this component was preceded by P1 component. At this age, we observed the early involvement of the inferior frontal cortex, which was not observed at the age of seven. The increase in positivity over that area was observed in the interval of 100–200 ms. Substantial differences between age groups were found in the late ERP component corresponding to cognitive processes. At the age of 7–8, the presentation of both the reference and test stimuli causes the increase in the amplitude of the slow positive complex (SPC) in the caudal liads with the maximum enhancement found in the interval of 300–800 ms in the parietal leads. At the age of 9–10, the SPC increase, much like in adults, was observed in ERP to the test stimulus only. At this age, adult-like specific changes in the late phases of ERPs were observed in the fronto-central regions at the different stages of working memory. They are the increases in the negative N400 wave in the ERP to the reference stimulus and the SPC to the test stimulus. These data show that, at the age of 9–10, the functional organization of working memory of the adult type is formed; however, the extent to which the frontal cortex, and its dorsal regions in particular, is involved into working memory processes does not meet yet a definitive level.  相似文献

The time course of changes in the hand muscle activity and the grip force before the hit of an object falling from different heights into a cup held between the thumb and the forefinger was analyzed in three variants of the experiment: (1) the subject saw the object falling; (2) the subject did not see the object falling but initiated the fall; and (3) the subject had no information on either the falling or its start. In the third variant, the muscle activity and the grip force changed in response to the object hitting the cup. In the second variant, the muscle activity and the grip force began to change 200–280 ms before the hit, this time being independent of height from which the object fell. In the first variant, the anticipatory changes began 150 ms after the object started falling and did not depend on the height of the falling within the rage 30–50 cm. If the object fell from a height of 70–105 cm, the changes in the muscle activity and the grip force began a fixed time before the object hit the cup, which did not depend on the height from which the object fell. Thus, when the object fall from small heights, the timing of the increase in the grip force was mainly determined by the moment when the object began moving; at large heights, the increase in the grip force was related to the presumed moment of the hit.  相似文献

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were measured when 24 Chinese subjects performed the earthquake color-matching Stroop task. All of them have experienced the great Sichuan earthquake (5.12), with 12 subjects in each of Chengdu city and Chongqing city (different earthquake experiences) groups. The behavioral data showed that the earthquake Stroop task yielded robust the earthquake interference effect as indexed by longer RT for earthquake-related (Related) words than earthquake-unrelated (Unrelated) words only in the Chengdu group. Scalp ERP analysis also revealed the neurophysiological substrate of the interference effect: a greater positivity (P350–450) in Related words as compared to Unrelated words was found between 350 and 450 ms post-stimulus over fronto-central scalp regions in the Chengdu group, while the interference effect was not found in the Chongqing group. The P350–450 might reflect an earthquake experience interference, but also attention enhancing, effect of earthquake-related words. Dipole source analysis of the difference wave (Related-Unrelated) showed that a generator was localized in the parahippocampal gyrus, which was possibly associated with flashbulb memory (personal earthquake experience). The results indicated that different personal earthquake experiences might be critical in engaging the neural mechanisms that underlie the modulation of selective attention. Spatiotemporal response patterns in the anterior and dorsocaudal fields of the guinea pig auditory cortex after two-tone sequences were studied in anesthetized animals (Nembutal 30 mg kg−1) using an optical recording method (voltage-sensitive dye RH795, 12 × 12 photodiode array). Each first (masker) and second (probe) tone was 30 ms long with a 10-ms rise-fall time. Masker-probe pair combinations of the same or different frequencies with probe delays of 30–150 ms were presented to the ear contralateral to the recording side. With same-frequency pairs, responses to the probe were inhibited completely after probe delays of less than 50 ms and the inhibition lasted for more than 150 ms, and the inhibition magnitudes in different isofrequency bands of the anterior field were essentially the same. With different-frequency (octave-separated) pairs, responses to the probe were not inhibited completely even after probe delays as short as 30 ms, and the inhibition lasted only for 110–130 ms. Inhibition magnitudes were different from location to location. Accepted: 4 August 1997  相似文献

People have a memory advantage for faces that belong to the same group, for example, that attend the same university or have the same personality type. Faces from such in-group members are assumed to receive more attention during memory encoding and are therefore recognized more accurately. Here we use event-related potentials related to memory encoding and retrieval to investigate the neural correlates of the in-group memory advantage. Using the minimal group procedure, subjects were classified based on a bogus personality test as belonging to one of two personality types. While the electroencephalogram was recorded, subjects studied and recognized faces supposedly belonging to the subject’s own and the other personality type. Subjects recognized in-group faces more accurately than out-group faces but the effect size was small. Using the individual behavioral in-group memory advantage in multivariate analyses of covariance, we determined neural correlates of the in-group advantage. During memory encoding (300 to 1000 ms after stimulus onset), subjects with a high in-group memory advantage elicited more positive amplitudes for subsequently remembered in-group than out-group faces, showing that in-group faces received more attention and elicited more neural activity during initial encoding. Early during memory retrieval (300 to 500 ms), frontal brain areas were more activated for remembered in-group faces indicating an early detection of group membership. Surprisingly, the parietal old/new effect (600 to 900 ms) thought to indicate recollection processes differed between in-group and out-group faces independent from the behavioral in-group memory advantage. This finding suggests that group membership affects memory retrieval independent of memory performance. Comparisons with a previous study on the other-race effect, another memory phenomenon influenced by social classification of faces, suggested that the in-group memory advantage is dominated by top-down processing whereas the other-race effect is also influenced by extensive perceptual experience.  相似文献

There appears to be a significant disconnect between symptomatic and functional recovery in bipolar disorder (BD). Some evidence points to interepisode cognitive dysfunction. We tested the hypothesis that some of this dysfunction was related to emotional reactivity in euthymic bipolar subjects may effect cognitive processing. A modification of emotional gender categorization oddball task was used. The target was gender (probability 25%) of faces with negative, positive, and neutral emotional expression. The experiment had 720 trials (3 blocks × 240 trials each). Each stimulus was presented for 150 ms, and the EEG/ERP responses were recorded for 1,000 ms. The inter-trial interval was varied in 1,100–1,500 ms range to avoid expectancy effects. Task took about 35 min to complete. There were 9 BD and 9 control subjects matched for age and gender. Reaction time (RT) was globally slower in BD subjects. The centro-parietal amplitudes at N170 and N200, and P200 and P300 were generally smaller in the BD group compared to controls. Latency was shorter to neutral and negative targets in BD. Frontal P200 amplitude was higher to emotional negative facial non-targets in BD subjects. The frontal N200 in response to positive facial emotion was less negative in BD subjects. The frontal P300 of BD subjects was lower to emotionally neutral targets. ERP responses to facial emotion in BD subjects varied significantly from normal controls. These variations are consistent with the common depressive symptomology seen in long term studies of bipolar subjects.  相似文献

Some studies have found that prospective memory (PM) cues which are emotionally valenced influence age effects in prospective remembering, but it remains unclear whether this effect reflects the operation of processes implemented at encoding or retrieval. In addition, none of the prior ageing studies of valence on PM function have examined potential costs of engaging in different valence conditions, or resource allocation trade-offs between the PM and the ongoing task. In the present study, younger, young-old and old-old adults completed a PM task in which the valence of the cues varied systematically (positive, negative or neutral) at encoding, but was kept constant (neutral) at retrieval. The results indicated that PM accuracy did not vary as a function of affect at encoding, and that this effect did not interact with age group. There was also no main or interaction effect of valence on PM reaction time in PM cue trials, indicating that valence costs across the three encoding conditions were equivalent. Old-old adults’ PM accuracy was reduced relative to both young-old and younger adults. Prospective remembering incurred dual-task costs for all three groups. Analyses of reaction time data suggested that for both young-old and old-old, these costs were greater, implying differential resource allocation cost trade-offs. However, when reaction time data were expressed as a proportional change that adjusted for the general slowing of the older adults, costs did not differ as a function of group.  相似文献

When a voluntary action is followed by an unexpected stimulus, a late positive potential (LPP) with a posterior scalp distribution is elicited in a latency range of 500–700 ms. In the present study, we examined what type of mismatch between expectations and action outcomes was reflected by the LPP. Twelve student volunteers participated in a task simulating choice of TV programs. After choosing one of three options displayed as a cue stimulus, they viewed a second stimulus (still TV image). To manipulate the type of expectation, three kinds of cue conditions were used: thumbnail image condition (three small TV images), category label condition (three words), and no cue condition (three question marks). Over trials, the second stimulus either matched (p = .80) or mismatched (p = .20) the chosen option. As compared to matched TV images, mismatched TV images elicited a larger LPP (500–700 ms) in the thumbnail image and category label conditions. In addition, a larger centroparietal P3 (400–450 ms) was elicited to mismatched TV images in the thumbnail image condition alone. LPP reflects a conceptual mismatch between a category-based expectation and an ensuing action outcome, whereas P3 reflects a perceptual mismatch between an image-based expectation and an action outcome.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted for 5 years to examine the effects of non-flooded mulching cultivation on crop yield, internal nutrient efficiency and soil properties in rice–wheat (R–W) rotations of the Chengdu Plain, southwest China. Compared with traditional flooding (TF), non-flooded plastic film mulching (PM) resulted in 12 and 11% higher average rice (Oryza sativa L.) yield and system productivity (combined rice and wheat yields), and the trends in rice and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yields under PM were stable over time. However, non-flooded wheat straw mulching (SM) decreased average rice yield by 11% compared with TF, although no significant difference in system productivity was found between SM and TF. Uptakes of N and K by rice under PM were higher than those under TF and SM, but internal nutrient efficiency was significantly lower (N) or similar (K) under PM compared to SM and TF. This implies that more N and K accumulated in rice straw under PM. After 5-year rice–wheat rotation, apparent P balances (112–160 kg ha−1) were positive under all three cultivation systems. However, the K balances were negative under PM (−419 kg ha−1) and TF (−90 kg ha−1) compared with SM (45 kg ha−1). This suggests that higher K inputs from fertilizer, straw or manure may be necessary, especially under PM. After five rice seasons and four wheat seasons, non-flooded mulching cultivation led to similar (PM) or higher (SM) soil organic carbon (SOC), total N (TN) and alkali hydrolyzable N (AH-N) in the top 0–5 and 5–12 cm layers compared with TF. SOC, TN, AH-N and Olsen-P (OP) in the sub-surface layer (12–24 cm) were significantly higher under PM or SM than under TF, indicating that rice under non-flooded mulching conditions may fail to make use of nutrients from the subsoil. Thus, the risk of decline in soil fertility under non-flooded mulching cultivation could be very low if input levels match crop requirements. Our data indicate that PM and SM may be alternative options for farmers using R–W rotations for enhancement or maintenance of system productivity and soil fertility.  相似文献

The process of perception requires not only the brain''s receipt of sensory data but also the meaningful organization of that data in relation to the perceptual experience held in memory. Although it typically results in a conscious percept, the process of perception is not fully conscious. Research on the neural substrates of human visual perception has suggested that regions of limbic cortex, including the medial orbital frontal cortex (mOFC), may contribute to intuitive judgments about perceptual events, such as guessing whether an object might be present in a briefly presented fragmented drawing. Examining dense array measures of cortical electrical activity during a modified Waterloo Gestalt Closure Task, results show, as expected, that activity in medial orbital frontal electrical responses (about 250 ms) was associated with intuitive judgments. Activity in the right temporal-parietal-occipital (TPO) region was found to predict mOFC (∼150 ms) activity and, in turn, was subsequently influenced by the mOFC at a later time (∼300 ms). The initial perception of gist or meaning of a visual stimulus in limbic networks may thus yield reentrant input to the visual areas to influence continued development of the percept. Before perception is completed, the initial representation of gist may support intuitive judgments about the ongoing perceptual process.  相似文献

A sudden visual onset is thought to `attract attention to its location' within less than 100 ms. We attempted to measure the effect of this attentional process on the event-related potential (ERP) to a probe presented about 140 ms after the onset, and to delineate the spatio-temporal characteristics of such an effect, if any. ERPs were recorded from 30 channels from 6 subjects while they performed a target detection task. Both targets and probes could be located in each of the 4 quadrants (eccentricities 6.1° and 7°, respectively). For a given single target, the subsequent probe was either presented near the location of the target (`valid target') or at the diagonal opposite (`invalid target'). Appropriate `neutral' conditions (probes preceded by no target, or by simultaneous targets in all quadrants) were applied, and ERPs to probes were corrected for the contribution of the ERPs to targets. The earliest effect of (in)validity was found at about 120 ms after probe onset for lower field probes. This effect consisted of enhanced posterior positivity for valid relative to neutral relative to invalid conditions. This positivity was superposed on a contralateral, extrastriate negative ongoing wave peaking at about 150 ms (`N150'). Source localization suggested that the (in)validity effects originate from deep medial parietal areas. The source corresponding to the N150 activity was not influenced by (in)validity. An earlier deflection to the probe at 80 ms (`NP80') depended on location, but not on (in)validity, and seemed to be of striate origin. Results are discussed in terms of a model postulating an attention-independent `input module' from which activation is fed to a `location module' embodying the actual attention mechanism.  相似文献

Prospective memory (PM) is the ability to remember to accomplish an action when a particular event occurs (i.e., event-based PM), or at a specific time (i.e., time-based PM) while performing an ongoing activity. Strategic Monitoring is one of the basic cognitive functions supporting PM tasks, and involves two mechanisms: a retrieval mode, which consists of maintaining active the intention in memory; and target checking, engaged for verifying the presence of the PM cue in the environment. The present study is aimed at providing the first evidence of event-related potentials (ERPs) associated with time-based PM, and at examining differences and commonalities in the ERPs related to Strategic Monitoring mechanisms between event- and time-based PM tasks. The addition of an event-based or a time-based PM task to an ongoing activity led to a similar sustained positive modulation of the ERPs in the ongoing trials, mainly expressed over prefrontal and frontal regions. This modulation might index the retrieval mode mechanism, similarly engaged in the two PM tasks. On the other hand, two further ERP modulations were shown specifically in an event-based PM task. An increased positivity was shown at 400-600 ms post-stimulus over occipital and parietal regions, and might be related to target checking. Moreover, an early modulation at 130-180 ms post-stimulus seems to reflect the recruitment of attentional resources for being ready to respond to the event-based PM cue. This latter modulation suggests the existence of a third mechanism specific for the event-based PM; that is, the "readiness mode".  相似文献

Stretch reflexes were evoked in elbow flexor muscles undergoing three different muscle contractions, i.e. isotonic shortening (SHO) and lengthening (LEN), and isometric (ISO) contractions. The intermuscle relationships for the magnitude of the stretch reflex component in the eletromyographic (EMG) activities of two main elbow flexor muscles, i.e. the biceps brachii (BB) and the brachioradialis (BRD), were compared among the three types of contractions. The subjects were requested to move their forearms sinusoidally (0.1 Hz) against a constant pre-load between elbow joint angles of 10° (0° = full extension) and 80° during SHO and LEN, and to keep an angle of 45° during the ISO. The perturbations were applied at the elbow angle of 45° in pseudo-random order. The EMG signals were rectified and averaged over a period of 100 ms before and 400 ms after the onset of the perturbation 40–50 times. From the ensemble averaged EMG waveform, the background activity (BGA), short (20–50 ms) and long latency (M2, 50–80, M3, 80–100 ms) reflex and voluntary activity (100–150 ms) components were measured. The results showed that both BGA and reflex EMG activity of the two elbow flexor muscles were markedly decreased during the lengthening contraction compared to the SHO and ISO contractions. Furthermore, the changes of reflex EMG components in the BRD muscle were more pronounced than those in the BB muscle, i.e. the ratios of M2 and M3 magnitudes between BRD and BB (BRD:BB) were significantly reduced during the LEN contractions. These results would suggest that the gain of long latency stretch reflex EMG activities in synergistic muscles might be modulated independently according to the model of muscle contraction. A study was made of the stepping pattern formation in decerebrated and in chronic spinal cats during epidural stimulation (ES). The hindlimb stepping performance depended on the parameters of ES and afferent input. At non-optimal ES parameters, no stepping was induced, only muscle reflexes followed the stimulation rhythm. Optimized ES (3–5 Hz, 50–100 μA for decerebrated and 20–30 Hz, 150–250 μA for spinal cats) evoked coordinated stepping movements at a natural rate (0.8–1 Hz) accompanied by electromyographic burst activity of the corresponding muscles. In decerebrated cats, the bursts are formed owing to modulation of early responses and the late polysynaptic activity. In chronic spinal cats, this process is mainly due to amplitude modulation of the early responses. Formation of the stepping pattern in decerebrated cats involves spinal interneurons responsible for the polysynaptic activity, which allows its correction based on processing the afferent signals. Activation of this system in chronic spinal cats can be realized by afferent stimulation alone, without ES.  相似文献

Chinese herbal medicine has shown promise for heroin detoxification. This review extends a prior meta-analysis of Chinese herbal medicine for heroin detoxification, with particular attention to the time course of symptoms. Both English and Chinese databases were searched for randomized trials comparing Chinese herbal medicine to either α2-adrenergic agonists or opioid agonists for heroin detoxification. The methodological quality of each study was assessed with Jadad’s scale (1–2 = low; 3–5 = high). Meta-analysis was performed with fixed- or random-effect models in RevMan software; outcome measures assessed were withdrawal-symptoms score, anxiety, and adverse effects of treatment. Twenty-one studies (2,949 participants) were included. For withdrawal-symptoms score relieving during the 10-day observation, Chinese herbal medicine was superior to α2-adrenergic agonists in relieving opioid-withdrawal symptoms during 4–10 days (except D8) and no difference was found within the first 3 days. Compared with opioid agonists, Chinese herbal medicine was inferior during the first 3 days, but the difference became non-significant during days 4–9. Chinese herbal medicine has better effect on anxiety relieving at late stage of intervention than α2-adrenergic agonists, and no difference with opioid agonists. The incidence of some adverse effects (fatigue, dizziness) was significantly lower for Chinese herbal medicine than for α2-adrenergic agonists (sufficient data for comparison with opioid agonists were not available). Findings were robust to file-drawer effects. Our meta-analysis suggests that Chinese herbal medicine is an effective and safety treatment for heroin detoxification. And more work is needed to determine the specific effects of specific forms of Chinese herbal medicine.  相似文献

Memory judgments can be based on accurate memory information or on decision bias (the tendency to report that an event is part of episodic memory when one is in fact unsure). Event related potentials (ERP) correlates are important research tools for elucidating the dynamics underlying memory judgments but so far have been established only for investigations of accurate old/new discrimination. To identify the ERP correlates of bias, and observe how these interact with ERP correlates of memory, we conducted three experiments that manipulated decision bias within participants via instructions during recognition memory tests while their ERPs were recorded. In Experiment 1, the bias manipulation was performed between blocks of trials (automatized bias) and compared to trial-by-trial shifts of bias in accord with an external cue (flexibly controlled bias). In Experiment 2, the bias manipulation was performed at two different levels of accurate old/new discrimination as the memory strength of old (studied) items was varied. In Experiment 3, the bias manipulation was added to another, bottom-up driven manipulation of bias induced via familiarity. In the first two Experiments, and in the low familiarity condition of Experiment 3, we found evidence of an early frontocentral ERP component at 320 ms poststimulus (the FN320) that was sensitive to the manipulation of bias via instruction, with more negative amplitudes indexing more liberal bias. By contrast, later during the trial (500–700 ms poststimulus), bias effects interacted with old/new effects across all three experiments. Results suggest that the decision criterion is typically activated early during recognition memory trials, and is integrated with retrieved memory signals and task-specific processing demands later during the trial. More generally, the findings demonstrate how ERPs can help to specify the dynamics of recognition memory processes under top-down and bottom-up controlled retrieval conditions.  相似文献

The capacity to deceive others is a complex mental skill that requires the ability to suppress truthful information. The polygraph is widely used in countries such as the USA to detect deception. However, little is known about the effects of emotional processes (such as the fear of being found guilty despite being innocent) on the physiological responses that are used to detect lies. The aim of this study was to investigate the time course and neural correlates of untruthful behavior by analyzing electrocortical indexes in response to visually presented neutral and affective questions. Affective questions included sexual, shameful or disgusting topics. A total of 296 questions that were inherently true or false were presented to 25 subjects while ERPs were recorded from 128 scalp sites. Subjects were asked to lie on half of the questions and to answer truthfully on the remaining half. Behavioral and ERP responses indicated an increased need for executive control functions, namely working memory, inhibition and task switching processes, during deceptive responses. Deceptive responses also elicited a more negative N400 over the prefrontal areas and a smaller late positivity (LP 550–750 ms) over the prefrontal and frontal areas. However, a reduction in LP amplitude was also elicited by truthful affective responses. The failure to observe a difference in LP responses across conditions likely results from emotional interference. A swLORETA inverse solution was computed on the N400 amplitude (300–400 ms) for the dishonest – honest contrast. These results showed the activation of the superior, medial, middle and inferior frontal gyri (BA9, 11, 47) and the anterior cingulate cortex during deceptive responses. Our results conclude that the N400 amplitude is a reliable neural marker of deception.  相似文献
