Effects of starvation on gravid females of Neoseiulus californicus were investigated at 20°C and 85% RH. When females that had been reared with abundant prey were swapped, just after laying their first egg, to conditions without any prey and water, they laid 1.8 eggs and survived for 4.3 days. In the body of well-fed females, an egg with eggshell and/or two oocytes were observed in the ventral and dorsal regions, respectively. The larger oocyte had two roundish nuclei and abundant yolk granules, and was enveloped with a vitelline membrane. These two nuclei were not fused but were just close to each other. The smaller oocyte had a nucleus, but had not yet formed yolk granules and vitelline membrane. Females after 12 h starvation had an egg in the ventral region and an oocyte in the dorsal region of the body. After more than 24 h starvation females maintained an oocyte in the dorsal region of the body, but had no egg in the ventral region. The oocyte was filled with abundant yolk granules and contained two irregular nuclei when females were starved for 24 h, but when starved for more than 36 h it contained one irregular nucleus. These findings suggest that (1) gravid females maintained an oocyte in the dorsal region after laying two eggs during starvation, (2) the oocyte was not absorbed during starvation, (3) the oocyte advanced vitellogenesis and the fusion of two nuclei, and (4) the vitellogenic oocyte was not enveloped with an eggshell and had not started embryogenesis.  相似文献

Summary The morphological features during development of diapause and non-diapause eggs of the silkworm,Bombyx mori, were investigated by means of light and electron microscopy, with special reference to eggs up to 24 h after oviposition.The blastoderm and yolk cells began to be formed about 6 and 24 h after oviposition, respectively, in both the diapause and non-diapause eggs, indicating that the diapause and non-diapause eggs develop at similar rates at least until 24 h after oviposition.Specific changes in the distribution of yolk granules were observed during early development of the diapause egg. Its yolk granules gradually aggregated into clusters from the periphery toward the inside of the egg during the period of blastoderm formation. Aggregation of yolk granules was most noticeable about 12 h after oviposition and then they dispersed again before yolk cell formation. On the other hand, yolk granules of the non-diapause eggs remained dispersed during development.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive biology of 385 male and 373 female slender smoothhounds,Gollum attenuatus, collected from New Zealand waters was examined. Size at maturity for both sexes was about 700 mm TL. Litter size was usually two. The sex ratio of embryos was 1:1. The right ovary ovulated 50–100 ova, 4–8 mm in diameter, and 30–80 ova were enclosed in each egg capsule. Only one embryo developed from the many ova in each egg capsule, the other undeveloped ova were ingested and passed to an external yolk sac which formed the yolk supply for the developing embryo.  相似文献

In the initial step of pronuclear association in fertilized fish eggs, the female and male pronuclei (containing large nucleolus-like bodies) were juxtaposed in the center of the blastodisc and formed nucleoplasmic projections along adjacent surfaces. After contact of the pronuclei, small internuclear bridges joining them were formed by fusion at several regions of the nuclear envelope projections. No specific site of fusion or breakdown of nuclear envelopes was recognized in the pronuclei during karyogamy. In the advanced stage, clumps of condensing chromatin appeared in the nucleoplasm of the newly fused pronuclei. The number and diameter of the internuclear bridges increased gradually by progressive fusion in many regions, finally yielding a spherical zygote nucleus. Following complete formation of the zygote nucleus, the pronuclear envelope began to break down concomitantly with shrinkage of the nucleoplasm, which was highly convoluted around the entire nuclear surface. The nucleoplasm containing chromosomes then mingled with the perinuclear cytoplasm.  相似文献

Insemination of sea urchin (Arbacia) ova with mussel (Mytilus) sperm has been accomplished by treating eggs with trypsin and suspending the gametes in seawater made alkaline with NaOH. Not all inseminated eggs undergo a cortical granule reaction. Some eggs either elevate what remains of their vitelline layer or demonstrate no cortical modification whatsoever. After its incorporation into the egg, the nucleus of Mytilus sperm undergoes changes which eventually give rise to the formation of a male pronucleus. Concomitant with these transformations, a sperm aster may develop in association with the centrioles brought into the egg with the spermatozoon. Both the male pronucleus and the sperm aster may then migrate centrad to the female pronucleus. Evidence is presented which suggests that fusion of the male pronuclei from Mytilus sperm with female pronuclei from Arbacia eggs may occur, although this was not directly observed. These results demonstrate that Mytilus sperm nuclei are able to react to conditions within Arbacia eggs and differentiate into male pronuclei.  相似文献

Inter‐ and intraspecific variation in eggshell colouration has long fascinated evolutionary biologists. Among species, such variation may accomplish different functions, the most obvious of which is camouflage and background matching. Within species, it has been proposed that inter‐female variation in eggshell pigmentation patterns can reflect egg, maternal or paternal traits and hence may provide cues to conspecifics about egg, maternal or paternal phenotypic quality. However, the relationship between protoporphyrin‐based eggshell pigmentation and egg or maternal/paternal traits appears to be highly variable among species. We investigated patterns of intraspecific variation in Eurasian barn swallow Hirundo r. rustica protoporphyrin‐based eggshell pigmentation, and analysed its association with egg and clutch characteristics, maternal/paternal phenotypic traits and parental feeding effort. Eggshell pigmentation pattern significantly varied between breeding colonies, was significantly repeatable in first clutches laid by the same females in different years (intraclass correlation coefficient ranging between 0.56 and 0.63), but it was not significantly associated with egg traits, such as position in the laying sequence, egg mass, yolk testosterone concentration and antioxidant capacity. It was weakly or non‐significantly associated with female and male traits (sexual ornaments), but females laying darker (higher pigment intensity) first clutches had higher hatching success, suggesting that eggshell pigment intensity may predict fitness. Male nestling feeding effort was not predicted by eggshell pigmentation. In addition, females with darker breast plumage colouration (a melanin‐based trait related to fitness) laid highly protoporphyrin‐covered eggs, suggesting the presence of a previously unappreciated link between protoporphyrin biosynthesis and plumage melanisation. Moreover, the proportion of male offspring increased in clutches originating from highly protoporphyrin‐covered eggs, suggesting that parents could acquire visual cues about their future brood sex composition before egg hatching. Our results support the idea that intraspecific signalling via eggshell pigmentation is a species‐specific rather than a general feature of avian taxa.  相似文献

This light and transmission electron microscopical study shows that the first polar body is given off before ovulation and that part of its cell membrane and that of the surrounding oocyte have long microvilli at the time of its ejection. Several layers of cumulus cells initially surround the secondary oocyte and first polar body, but the ovulated oocytes in the oviducts in the process of being fertilized do not have cumulus cells around them. Partly expelled second polar bodies occur in the oviduct; they are elongated structures that lack organelles and have electron-dense nuclei. A small fertilization cone appears to form around the sperm tail at the time of sperm entry into the egg and an incorporation cone develops around the sperm head in the egg cytoplasm. In three fertilized eggs a small hole was seen in the zona, which was presumably formed by the spermatozoon during penetration. Cortical granules, present in ovarian oocytes, are not seen in fertilized tubal or uterine eggs; release of their contents probably reduces the chances of polyspermy, although at least one polyspermic fertilized egg was seen and several other fertilized eggs had spermatozoa within the zona pellucida. In the zygote the pronuclei come to lie close together, but there was no evidence of fusion. A "yolk mass," which becomes eccentric before ovulation, is extruded by the time the two-cell embryos are formed, but many vacuoles remain in the non-yolky pole of the egg. A shell membrane of variable thickness is present around all uterine eggs but its origin remains undetermined.  相似文献

Schistosomiasis is a water-borne parasitic illness caused by neoophoran trematodes of the genus Schistosoma. Using classical histological techniques and whole-mount preparations, the present work describes the embryonic development of Schistosoma mansoni eggs in the murine host and compares it with eggs maintained under in vitro conditions. Two pre-embryonic stages occur inside the female worm: the prezygotic stage is characterized by the release of mature oocytes from the female ovary until its fertilization. The zygotic stage encompasses the migration of the zygote through the ootype, where the eggshell is formed, to the uterus. Fully formed eggs are laid still undeveloped, without having suffered any cleavage. In the outside environment, eight embryonic stages can be defined: stage 1 refers to early cleavages and the beginning of yolk fusion. Stage 2 represents late cleavage, with the formation of a stereoblastula and the onset of outer envelope differentiation. Stage 3 is defined by the elongation of the embryonic primordium and the onset of inner envelope formation. At stage 4, the first organ primordia arise. During stages 5 to 7, tissue and organ differentiation occurs (neural mass, epidermis, terebratorium, musculature, and miracidial glands). Stage 7 is characterized by the nuclear condensation of neurons of the central neural mass. Stage 8 refers to the fully formed larva, presenting muscular contraction, cilia, and flame-cell beating. This staging system was compared to a previous classification and could underlie further studies on egg histoproteomics (morphological localizome). The differentiation of embryonic structures and their probable roles in granulomatogenesis are discussed herein. To prevent predation on their eggs, prey often avoid patches occupied by predators. As a result, they need to delay oviposition until they reach predator-free patches. Because many species allocate energy to egg production in a continuous fashion, it is not clear what kind of mechanism prey use to delay oviposition. We used females of the phytoseiid mite Neoseiulus cucumeris to study these mechanisms. Females were placed in patches with pollen, a food source they use for egg production, and they were exposed to another phytoseiid mite, Iphiseius degenerans, which is an intraguild predator of N. cucumeris juveniles. We found that the oviposition of N. cucumeris females on patches with the predator was lower than on patches without the predator. Cues left by the intraguild predator were not sufficient to elicit such behaviour. Females of N. cucumeris reduced oviposition when exposed to the predator by retaining the egg inside their body, resulting in a lower developmental rate once these eggs were laid. Hence, females are capable of retaining eggs, but the development of these eggs continues inside the mother’s body. In this way, females gain some time to search for less risky oviposition sites.  相似文献

The hypothesis that eggshell colouration is a sexually selected trait of female birds is based on the fact that biliverdin, the pigment responsible for blue‐green colours of the eggshell, is a potent antioxidant and that only females with high antioxidant capacity can deposit higher concentrations of biliverdin as eggshell pigment. Antioxidants (e.g. carotenoids, vitamins) are also abundant in the egg yolk, which serve as nutrient reserves for the developing embryo, and eggshell colour intensity may reflect maternal investment in yolk antioxidants. Here, we test the relationship between blue‐green eggshell colour intensity and concentration and amount of carotenoids, vitamin A, and vitamin E in the egg yolk of spotless starling Sturnus unicolor, a species for which we have previously shown good evidence of sexual selection driving egg coloration. As could be extrapolated from the hypothesis of sexual selection driving the evolution of blue‐green eggshells, we found that eggshell colour intensity was positively related to the concentration and amount of carotenoids and vitamin E in the yolk. Thus, mothers may use egg colour intensity to signal to fathers the antioxidant status of their offspring. Moreover, we provide evidence suggesting that maternal yolk investment in more coloured eggs can also explain the detected association between feeding decisions of males and egg colour intensity that we have found previously in this species.  相似文献

Female qualities in males are common in vertebrates but have not been extensively reported in insects. Vitellogenin (Vg) is highly expressed in the female fat body and is generally required for the formation of yolk proteins in the insect egg. Vg upregulation is generally regarded as a female quality in female oviparous animals. In this study, we found that Bombyx mori Vg (BmVg) is especially highly expressed in the female pupa. Downregulation of the BmVg gene in the female pupa by RNA interference (RNAi) interfered with egg formation and embryonic development, showing the importance of BmVg in these processes. So, we used BmVg as a biomarker for female qualities in the silkworm. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunofluorescence histochemistry showed that ovary transplants induced BmVg synthesis in the male pupa fat body. Ovaries transplanted into male silkworms produced only a few eggs with deformed yolk granules. These results suggested that the amount of BmVg in the male silkworm was insufficient for eggs to undergo complete embryonic development. After 17-beta-estradiol was used to treat male pupae and male pupal fat bodies, BmVg was upregulated in vivo and in vitro. These findings indicated that the male silkworm has innate female qualities that were induced by a transplanted ovary and 17β-estradiol. However, in silkworms, female qualities in males are not as complete as in females.  相似文献

Avian eggshell coloration may have arisen due to selection on the biological, chemical, or physical properties of the pigments embedded within the eggshell, or due to selection on the coloration that emerges due to pigment deposition. Within both hypothetical frameworks, pigment‐based eggshell coloration would be related to metrics of egg quality; however, no one has evaluated the relative strength of coloration and pigment concentration in predicting egg quality. Here, we examined 66 European starling Sturnus vulgaris eggs and quantified eggshell biliverdin concentration (an antioxidant that produces the eggshell's blue coloration) and used 28 different coloration metrics derived from both photographic and spectrophotometric data. We also measured egg size, eggshell thickness, concentration of carotenoids in the yolk, and concentration of lysozyme in the albumen to capture variation in egg quality. We found that throughout the laying sequence, biliverdin concentration increased while eggshell thickness, yolk carotenoid concentration, and lysozyme concentration in the albumen all decreased, but this variation was not captured by any eggshell coloration metric. Both eggshell coloration and biliverdin concentration were negatively associated with yolk carotenoid concentration, but only eggshell biliverdin concentration was negatively associated with yolk mass. Lastly, biliverdin concentration explained, at most, only 46% of the variation for all eggshell coloration metrics. Our results suggest biliverdin concentration is a better predictor of egg quality than egg coloration in European starlings, supporting the hypothesis that eggshell pigment concentration per se may be the target of selection.  相似文献

Varying concentrations of powdered leaves of Eucalyptus and Mentha and rhizomes of Curcuma were evaluated in controlling Tyrophagus putrescentiae in wheat flour. At higher concentrations, all these plant materials significantly decreased the population build-up of the mite. Eucalyptus and Mentha leaf powders were effective at concentrations ranging from 100 to 5% in bringing about a decrease in the fecundity of the mite and reducing the egg numbers to 51.66 and 25.49 per female, respectively, as compared to 98.16 eggs per female in the controls. Rhizomes of Curcuma were effective even at a concentration of 0.1% reducing the egg laying to 7.66 eggs per female in wheat flour. These materials were more deleterious to immature stages (ova and larvae) than to the mature stages of T. putrescentiae. When tested on whole grains of wheat these plant materials showed more pronounced effects in controlling the mite population compared to that in wheat flour. Curcuma rhizomes were the most promising for possible use against T. putrescentiae.  相似文献

Summary Post-embryonic development of parthenogenic eggs of Lepidodermella squammata was studied by light and electron microscopy in animals of known age and reproductive history. Each bilateral gonad initially contains eight cells. No mitotic proliferation occurs during parthenogenic egg development. Germ cells are tightly clustered, have smooth plasma membranes with no interconnections, and are uninucleate. There is no surrounding ovary or oviduct. At hatching, two cells in each gonad are identifiable as parthenogenic eggs. The enlarged nucleolus of the most mature egg has already attained the morphology that persists throughout vitellogenesis, with intertwined granular and fibrillar threads. Less mature eggs have earlier stages of nucleolar development, and lack indications of meiotic events. Parthenogenic eggs enter vitellogenesis singly, with formation of RER and active Golgi complexes, and the accumulation of lipid, yolk, and various granules. The shell is formed in situ, whereas the spines elongate after egg deposition. Most animals produce four parthenogenic eggs, which undergo immediate development (tachyblastic eggs). Resting (opsiblastic) eggs are rare in isolation culture. Both types of eggs are produced only prior to the formation of sperm and primary oocytes. The absence of synaptonemal complexes, which would indicate synapsis of homologous chromosomes in prophase of meiosis I, implies that parthenogenesis is by apomixis in L. squammata.  相似文献

Summary Vitellin was purified from eggs of the silkworm,Bombyx mori, by a new method in which vitellin was extracted from isolated yolk granules. The purified vitellin had a molecular weight of 540,000. An antibody against purified vitellin was prepared in rabbits. It reacted with the hemolymph vitellogenin as well as with purified vitellin, but not with other proteins in the hemolymph or in the extract from yolk granules. The anti-vitellin IgG was used to immunocytochemically locate vitellin in theBombyx non-diapause egg during early developmental stages. In the egg, just after oviposition, vitellin was located in internal yolk granules and in small yolk granules of the periplasm. During the early developmental stages studied, vitellin was not metabolized uniformly throughout the egg. The vitellin of the internal yolk granules located at the posterior-dorsal part and of the small peripheral yolk granules was utilized in 16 h and 2 days, respectively, after oviposition. A thin, very vitellin-poor layer was located between the periplasm and the vitellin-rich interior in the newly laid egg. it was always in close contact with the periphery where blastoderm and germ-band cells developed.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to analyse egg quality changes of Japanese quail during the reproductive season and after several days of storage. A significantly higher egg weight was recorded in week 9 than in week 25 and week 31 of age ofbirds. The egg specific gravity value of eggs also decreased with the age of quails. The smallest yolk weight and its percentage proportion in egg mass were observed in week 25. Eggs laid in weeks 9 and 25 were characterised by similar and lower (P < or = 0.05) white weight in comparison to those examined on the last date. The highest white proportion in egg weight was recorded during the 25th week. The value of this trait was similar or smaller on the remaining dates. Similar and lower values of the white index and Haugh units, in comparison with the first date, were determined in eggs laid on weeks 25 and 31, whereas similar and greater eggshell thickness than in the 9th week of age was recorded on the last two dates of examination. Lower (P < or = 0.05) egg weight was observed after 5 and 8 than after 0 (measured on the day of laying) days of storage. Likewise, smaller egg specific gravity was recorded after three consecutive periods of storage in comparison with the eggs examined on the day of laying. Eggs examined after 3, 5 and 8 days of storage, in comparison with those stored for 0 days, were characterised by lower yolk index. Significantly smaller weight and white index than after 0 days were determined in eggs stored, respectively, for 5 and 8 as well as for 3, 5 and 8 days. Similarly, smaller numbers of Haugh units were determined after 3 consecutive storage periods in comparison with the eggs examined on the day of laying. Eggs stored for 0 and 3 days were characterised by a greater eggshell weight than those examined after 5 and 8 days. The weight of Japanese quail eggs decreased significantly from day 5 onwards, whereas the egg specific gravity-- from the 3rd day of storage. Yolk and white quality began to deteriorate already after 3 days of egg storage. It appears, therefore, that egg storage of Japanese quails before hatching lasting more than 3 days in the analysed conditions deteriorated the eggshell quality and internal egg traits.  相似文献

The effectiveness of non-prey food items, such as pollen, honeydew, and microbes, in maintaining phytoseiid mite populations is widely accepted. However, the availability of such naturally occurring non-prey foods varies with the season and surrounding environment; thus, it is difficult to manipulate and maintain supplies of these food sources. A great deal of research has examined the development and reproduction of phytoseiid mites on artificial diets. Although phytoseiid mites frequently develop, several studies have detected low fecundities of adult females reared on artificial diets. Therefore, the use of artificial diets for commercial propagation is often difficult. However, the potential of artificial diets to maintain phytoseiid mite populations has not yet been evaluated. In this study, we investigated the developmental success and survival of Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) on an artificial diet. This mite may be one of the most effective phytoseiid species used in agricultural systems for the control of spider mites. N. californicus successfully developed on the artificial diets: 93.5-100% of individuals reached adulthood 4-7 days after hatching. The survival rates of gravid adult females maintained on the AD-1 artificial diet composed of yeast components, saccharides, and egg yolk at 25 degrees C were 100, 80, and 48.9% over 36, 60, and 90 days, respectively. Moreover, >80% of the surviving females maintained on AD-1 for 36 or 60 days laid eggs after being switched to a diet of the spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch, although they had laid few eggs during the maintenance periods on the artificial diet. Our results indicate that artificial diets can serve as a potentially useful food source for the long-term maintenance of N. californicus populations.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between number of diapausing eggs produced by the spider mite Panonychus mori and the subsequent population trend for a period of 3 years. Panonychus mori showed a single population density peak on its host plant moonseed, Cocculus trilobus. The position and height of this peak were correlated with the density of diapausing eggs around the moonseed leaf buds produced the winter before. In 1994 the density of diapausing eggs measured in February was 4.3/bud, which was 6–14 times higher than the density of diapausing eggs for the same period in 1995 (0.3/bud) and 1996 (0.7/bud). The subsequent population density peak in 1994 occurred in mid June and was about 2.5 times higher than the peaks in 1995 and 1996, which both occurred early September. Thus, the present study showed a positive correlation between the density of diapausing eggs on the host plant and the start and the extend of the population increase the next growing season. Predators associated with the spider mite population were phytoseiid mites, especially Amblyseius eharai was well synchronized with the spider mite density in 1994. Field observations revealed that P. mori produced diapausing eggs in response to short photoperiod in early October each year, which corresponded with the timing predicted by the critical photoperiod around 13 h at 18°C, as assessed in laboratory trials. Diapause ended by early April when egg hatchability attained about 50% and eggs took 9 days to hatch at 25°C and a 16L:8D photoperiod. A prominent scenario for the evolution of viviparity and placentation in reptiles predicts a step-wise pattern with an initial phase of prolonged oviductal egg retention accompanied by progressive reduction in eggshell thickness culminating in viviparity; calcium placentotrophy evolves secondarily to viviparity. Saiphos equalis is an Australian scincid lizard with a reproductive mode that is uncommon for squamates because eggs are retained in the oviduct until late developmental stages, and the embryonic stage at oviposition varies geographically. We studied calcium mobilization by embryos in two populations with different oviductal egg retention patterns to test the hypothesis that the pattern of nutritional provision of calcium is independent of the embryonic stage at oviposition. Females from one population are viviparous and oviposit eggs containing fully formed embryos, whereas embryos in oviposited eggs of the second population are morphologically less mature, and these eggs hatch several days later. The reproductive mode of this population is denoted as prolonged oviductal egg retention. Yolk provided the highest proportion of calcium to hatchlings in both populations. Eggs of both populations were enclosed in calcified eggshells, but shells of the population with prolonged egg retention had twice the calcium content of the viviparous population and embryos recovered calcium from these eggshells. Placental transfer accounted for a substantial amount of calcium in hatchlings in both populations. Hatchling calcium concentration was higher in the population with prolonged egg retention because these embryos mobilized calcium from yolk, the eggshell and the placenta. This pattern of embryonic calcium provision in which both a calcified eggshell and placentotrophy contribute to embryonic nutrition is novel. The reproductive pattern of S. equalis illustrates that calcified eggshells are compatible with prolonged oviductal egg retention and that viviparity is not requisite to calcium placentotrophy.  相似文献
