The egg capsules, eggs and embryos of the muricid gastropodCoronium coronatum are described for the first time. Capsulesare sessile, bulliform, semi-circular, with a plug in the dorsalcenter. Sutures split the capsule into two asymmetrical halves.Recently laid capsules showed the presence of 3639 (n = 2) uncleavednurse eggs with a diameter of 180–210 µm (mean= 197.4 ± 8.9). The number of early embryos was 9–11.The size of the embryos was 320 x 320 to 820–880 µm.Nine pre-hatching embryos of 3.94 mm (n = 8, SD = 0.32)were found inside the older capsule. SEM illustrations of embryosand radulae are provided. Comparison of shell and radula ofembryos with the protoconch and radulae of adults of C. coronatumrevealed that the capsule belongs to this species. The African chironomid Polypedilum vanderplanki exhibits anhydrobiosis,i.e., the larvae can survive complete desiccation. Recoveryrate and trehalose content were investigated in larvae desiccatedslowly or at a rate more than 3 times faster. Upon slow desiccation(evaporation rate 0.22 ml day–1) larvae synthesized 38µg trehalose/individual before complete desiccation, andall of them recovered after rehydration, whereas larvae thatwere dehydrated quickly (evaporation rate 0.75 ml day–1)accumulated only 6.8 µg trehalose/individual and noneof them revived after rehydration. In the pools that are theirnatural habitat P. vanderplanki larvae make tubes by incorporatingdetritus or soil with their sticky saliva. This tubular structureis a physical barrier not only to protect the larva from naturalenemies but also induces successful anhydrobiosis by reducingthe dehydration rate. When larvae were dehydrated with 100 µldistilled water (DW) in soil tubes, they accumulated 37 µgtrehalose/individual and more than half of them could reviveafter rehydration, whereas larvae without tubes accumulatedlower level of trehalose and none recovered after rehydration.  相似文献

The relationships between photosynthesis and photosyntheticphoton flux densities (PPFD, P-l) were studied during a red-tideof Dinophysis norvegica (July-August 1990) in Bedford Basin.Dinophysis norvegica, together with other dinoflagellates suchas Gonyaulax digitate, Ceratium tripos, contributed {small tilde}50%of the phytoplankton biomass that attained a maximum of 16.7µg Chla 1 and 11.93 106 total cells I–1.The atomic ratios of carbon to nitrogen for D.norvegica rangedfrom 8.7 to 10.0. The photosynthetic characteristics of fractionatedphytoplankton (>30 µm) dominated by D.norvegica weresimilar to natural bloom assemblages: o (the initial slope ofthe P-l curves) ranged between 0.013 and 0.047 µg C [µgChla]–1 h–1 [µmol m s–1]–1the maximum photosynthetic rate, pBm, between 0.66 and 1.85µg C [µghla]–1 h–1; lk (the photoadaptationindex) from 14 to 69 µ,mol m–2 s–1. Carbonuptake rates of the isolated cells of D.norvegica (at 780 µmolm–2 s–1) ranged from 16 to 25 pg C cell–1h and were lower than those for C.tripos, G.digitaleand some other dinoflagellates. The variation in carbon uptakerates of isolated cells of D.norvegica corresponded with PBmof the red-tide phytoplankton assemblages in the P-l experiments.Our study showed that D.norvegica, a toxigenic dinoflagellate,was the main contributor to the primary production in the bloom.  相似文献

Ephyra larvae and small medusae (1.7–95 mm diameter, 0.01–350mg ash-free dry wt, AFDW) of the scyphozoan jellyfish Aureliaaurita were used in predation experiments with phytoplankton(the flagellate Isochrysis galbana, 4 µm diameter, {smalltilde}6 x 10–6 µg AFDW cell–1), ciliates (theoligotrich Strombidium sulcatum, 28 µm diameter, {smalltilde}2 x 10–3 µg AFDW), rotifers (Synchaeta sp.,0.5 µg AFDW individual–1) and mixed zooplankton(mainly copepods and cladocerans, 2.1–3.1 µg AFDWindividual–1). Phytoplankton in natural concentrations(50–200 µg C I–1) were not utilized by largemedusae (44–95 mm diameter). Ciliates in concentrationsfrom 0.5 to 50 individuals ml"1 were consumed by ephyra larvaeand small medusae (3–14 mm diameter) at a maximum predationrate of 171 prey day–1, corresponding to a daily rationof 0.42%. The rotifer Synchaeta sp., offered in concentrationsof 100–600 prey I–1, resulted in daily rations ofephyra larvae (2–5 mm diameter) between 1 and 13%. Mixedzooplankton allowed the highest daily rations, usually in therange 5–40%. Large medusae (>45 mm diameter) consumedbetween 2000 and 3500 prey organisms day"1 in prey concentrationsexceeding 100 I–1. Predation rate and daily ration werepositively correlated with prey abundance. Seen over a broadsize spectrum, the daily ration decreased with increased medusasize. The daily rations observed in high abundance of mixedzooplankton suggest a potential ‘scope for growth’that exceeds the growth rate observed in field populations,and this, in turn, suggests that the natural populations areusually food limited. SYNOPSIS. The filtration mechanics of the gill of the zebramussel, Dreissena polymorpha, allow this organism to captureparticles less than 1 µm. The organization of gill cirriand the architecture of the cirri appear to be important inproviding the organism with the ability to filter small particles.Bacteria may provide a useful nutrient source for these animalsas bacterial proteins can be digested and assimilated into musselproteins. Laboratory experiments indicate that D. polymorphais capable of filtering and assimilating a wide range of bacteriaranging in size from 1–4 µm. Unionid species appearto be at least an order of magnitude less efficient at filteringbacteria than D. polymorpha. Because of its relatively smallergill size, C. fluminea also filters bacteria less efficientlythan D. polymorpha. We suggest that bacterial utilization byfreshwater mussel species has important population and evolutionaryimplications.  相似文献

Selectivity-size spectra, clearance and ingestion rates andassimilation efficiencies of Acartia clausi (Copepoda), Peniliaavirostris (Cladocera) and Doliolum denticulatum (Doliolida)from Blanes Bay (Catalan Sea, NW Mediterranean) were evaluatedin grazing experiments over a wide range of food concentrations(0.02–8.8 mm3 L–1 plankton assemblages from BlanesBay, grown in mesocosms at different nutrient levels). Acartiaclausi reached the highest grazing coefficients for large algae>70 µm (longest linear extension), P. avirostris forintermediate food sizes between 15 and 70 µm, and D. denticulatumfor small sizes from 2.5 to 15 µm. Penilia avirostrisand D. denticulatum acted as passive filter-feeders. Acartiaclausi gave some evidence for a supplementary raptorial feedingmode. Effective food concentration (EFC) decreased linearlywith increasing nutrient enrichment for D. denticulatum andfollowed domed curves for A. clausi and for P. avirostris withmaximum values at intermediate and high enrichment levels, respectively.Clearance rates of crustacean species showed curvilinear responseswith narrow modal ranges to increasing food concentration. Clearancerates of D. denticulatum increased abruptly and levelled intoa plateau at low food concentrations. Mean clearance rates were13.9, 25.5 and 64.1 mL ind.–1 day–1, respectively.No clearance could be detected for A. clausi at food concentrations<0.1 mm3 L–1 and for P. avirostris at food concentrations  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Internal embryonic brooding has been suggested as an adaptation to enhance reproductive success in minute gastropods. It is rare in vetigastropods, previously known in only two species of Spectamen Iredale, 1924 (Solariellidae) from South Africa. Herein it is confirmed in the temperate Australian micro-snail Tricolia rosea (Angas, 1867), with up to 46 embryos observed within a gravid female. Embryos are brooded to an advanced stage, possessing a translucent, calcified shell and a calcified operculum. The initial protoconch is colourless, spirally sculptured and delineated by a consistent axial demarcation at the 0.75 whorl mark, when it measures 320?µm across. Beyond this, the second part of the protoconch is tinted pink, the strong spiral sculpture continues but the ribs and interstices are broader, with smoother surface microsculpture. At the 1.1 to 1.125 whorl mark the protoconch measures 400?µm across when transition to smooth teleoconch sculpture occurs. No brooded embryos possessed teleoconch sculpture. The potential relationship of protoconch morphology to embryonic development, hatching, feeding and release are considered. The mechanism of fertilisation is unknown, but embryos in a brood are at the same developmental stage. Unanswered questions in embryonic development and problems with protoconch terminologies in vetigastropods are also discussed.  相似文献

Four species of archeogastropods, presumed members of threesubfamilies of the trochidae, exhibit significant differencesin developmental modes and shell coiling. All four species havelecithotrophic development which is reflected in their inflatedpausispiral protoconchis; however, Margarites marginatus andLirularia succincta have benthic development in gelatinous masses,while Margarites pupillus and Calliostoma ligatum have pelagicembryos and swimming larvae with a potential for dispersal overa period of a week or longer. These modes cannot be deducedfrom the size of the egg, the size or shape of the protoconch,or the size or relative prominence of female pallial reproductivestructures. The protoconch of C. ligatum is orthostrophicallycoiled, but the protoconchs of the other three species are hyperstrophicallycoiled although their teleconchs are orthostrophic. These threetrochoidean species thus share with architectonicoideans, pyramidelloideans,opisthobranchs, and pulmonates the distinctive shell characterof heterostrophy, previously unreported for archaeogastropods. These observations, considered together with others reportedin the literature, show: (1) that developmental mode (pelagicor benthic) cannot be inferred from protoconch appearance ortaxonomy in major trochoidean ganera; (2) that significant dispersalpotential is present in the histories of some trochoidean archeogastropoids;and (3) that character sets (pallial reproductive structures,pairing during spawning, heterostrophic shell coiling) thoughtnot to occur below the mesogastropod level are found in theTrochoidea. These conclusions bring into question the usefulnessof these characters in defining higher gastropod taxa and raiseadditional questions concerning the ancestry of the higher gastropods. Filtering rates were measured for zooplankton species in Situon single-celled Chlorella and on four Microcystis colony sizefractions (5–20, 20–40, 40–60 and 60–100µm) in a hypertrophic reservoir. Natural-log-transformedfiltration rates of five cladoceran species, one copepod andone rotifer were included in an all-food-particle, all-speciesmultiple regression model which explained 43% of the variancein filtration rate as a function of animal body length. An additional14% and 7.6% of the variance was attributable to food type andzooplankton species respectively, with temperature accountingfor <4% of the variance. Restricting the filtration ratemodel to cladocerans alone explained 51% of the variance asa function of animal length, 16% as a function of food type,7.5% as a function of species and only 0.2% as a function oftemperature. In linear filtration rate models for each foodtype, cladoceran body length explained 70% of the variance whenfeeding on Chlorella and between 57 and 67% of the varianceon the four Microcystis colony fractions. Models describingcladoceran filtration rates on Chlorella and the 5–20µm Microcystis colony fraction were significantly differentfrom the three models on larger colonies due to cladoceran responsesto increasing food particle size. Accordingly, a combined modelfor Microcystis colonies >20 µm was developed. Inclusionof food quality factors such as cyanophyte colony size seemsjustified in models aimed at estimating clearance rates, resourceutilization and phytoplankton grazing losses in plankton orecosystem studies when applied to eutrophic or hypertrophiclakes where large cyanophyte particles are abundant.  相似文献

Life-long somatic growth and egg production responses of Daphniabarbata, Daphnia gibba, Daphnia laevis, Daphnia pulex, Moinamicrura and Diaphanosoma excisum were examined in relation todifferent food and suspended sediment levels, in factorial experimentsat 20°C. Food treatments involved additions of 0, 100, 500and 2500 µg C l–1 of Selenastrum to 20 µmfiltered water, generally from source lakes. These food levelswere tested at two suspended sediment levels in all species,viz. (i) natural source-lake nephelometric turbidities of 7–65nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) ({small tilde}10–70mg l–1 TSS) and (ii) {small tilde}3- to 4-fold enrichmentof natural levels (8-fold in D.excisum). A third sediment-freetreatment was tested in all species of Daphnia other than D.gibba.Growth in body length and reproductive output were assesseddaily for individual animals. Main and interactive effects offood and sediment on growth were assessed at selected ages fromday 3 through subsequent life using analysis of variance (ANOVA).Strong and highly significant positive food effects were apparentat all ages in all species examined, with the curious exceptionof D.excisum. The onset of maturity and fecundity were alsopositively related to food level. Sediment effects on growth,age of maturity and fecundity were variable, but tended to bemuch weaker than food effects. Both stimulatory (positive, especiallyat low food levels) and inhibitory (negative) effects of sedimenton growth were apparent, both between and within species. Performancein sediment-free water was very poor, except in D.pulex. Food-sedimentinteraction effects were variable. Generally, turbidwater specieswere influenced less adversely by sediment than clear-waterspecies, indicating the existence of environmentally appropriateadaptive responses. Overall, the findings indicate that lightlimitation of algal resources by suspended sediments, ratherthan the condition of high turbidity per se, is responsiblefor the apparently negative impact of suspended sediments frequentlyobserved on natural populations of cladoceran zooplankters.  相似文献

Photosynthetic 14C fixation by Characean cells in solutionsof high pH containing NaH14CO3 gave a measure of the abilityof these cells to take up bicarbonate (H14CO3). Whereascells of Nitella translucens from plants collected and thenstored in the laboratory absorbed bicarbonate at 1–1.5µµmoles cm–2 sec–1, rates of 3–8µµmoles cm–2 sec–1 were obtained withN. translucens cells from plants grown in the laboratory. Influxesof 5–6 µµmoles cm–2 sec–1 wereobtained with Chara australis, 3–8 µµmolescm–2 sec–1 with Nitellopsis obtusa, and 1–5µµmoles cm–2 sec–1 with Tolypella intricata.It is considered that these influxes represent the activityof a bicarbonate pump, which may be an electrogenic process. In solutions of lower pH, H14CO3 uptake would be maskedby rapid diffusion of 14CO2 into the cells: the four Characeanspecies fixed 14CO2 at maximum rates of 30–40 µµmolescm–2 sec–1 (at 21° C).  相似文献

The Barents Sea is an important area with respect to fisheriesresources (i.e. capelin and cod). In May, June and August 1981zooplankton biomass was measured along a transect at 30°E,from the ice border southwards. A maximum was recorded in Atlanticwater by the end of June (>100 g wet weight m–2 InAugust the biomass values were relatively low south of the Polarfront and increased northwards into Arctic water (–50g m–2 The species composition was influenced by the distributionof cold Arctic water and warmer Atlantic water. The free-swimming sexual stage (gonozoid) of the doliolid, Doliolettagegenbauri, was abundant at a site in the NE Atlantic (58W,20N) during June 1996. Lipid analysis indicated that theseorganisms were comprised mainly of polar lipid with only lowlevels of neutral storage lipid (triacylglycerols) and thisis consistent with a life history strategy of rapid somaticgrowth and gamete production. Fatty acid analysis of the gonozoidssuggested a diverse microplanktonic diet, comprising diatoms,flagellates and dinoflagellates. The fatty acid compositionof D.gegenbauri was dominated by 20:5(n–3) and 22:6(n–3),and is of high nutritional value to predators, particularlyfish. The results are discussed in relation to the organisms'life history strategy and their potential nutritional impacton higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Two-node explants from Sweet Orange cv. St Ives Valencia orangeshoots produced prolific callus and formed secondary abscissionzones within internodes when cultured in vitro with abscisicacid (ABA, 5 µM) or -naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA, 5 µM).Benzyladenine (BA, 1 µm) induced callus but had littleeffect on abscission. Secondary abscission zone formation wasassociated with ABA-induced and auxin-induced ethylene formation.Treatment of explants with inhibitors of ethylene synthesis[aminoethoxyvinyl glycine (AVG), Co2+, PO43–] preventedformation of secondary abscission zones but had variable effectson callus formation. Newly made explants contained high concentrationsof endogenous ABA (up to 6000 ng g–1 f.wt), as measuredby GC/MS/SIM. Long-term subculture of explants (two years) inmedia containing BA (1 µm) led to a reduction in endogenousABA level (40 ng g–1 f. wt) and to loss of capacity toform extensive callus and secondary abscission zones. The stomatal response of seedlings grown in 360 or 720 µmolmol–1 to irradiance and leaf-to-air vapour pressure deficit(VPD) at both 360 and 720 µmol mol–1 to CO2 wasmeasured to determine how environmental factors interact withCO2 enrichment to affect stomatal conductance. Seedlings offour species with different conductances and life histories,Cercis canadensis (L.), Quercus rubra (L.), Populus deltoides(Bartr. ex Marsh.) P. nigra (L.), and Pinus taeda (L.), weremeasured in hopes of identifying general responses. Conductanceof seedlings grown at 360 and 720 µmol mol–1 CO2were similar and responded in the same manner to measurementCO2 concentration, irradiance and VPD. Conductance was lowerfor all species when measured at 720 than when measured at 360µmol mol–1 CO2 at both VPDs ({small tilde}1.5 and{small tilde}2.5 kPa) and all measured irradiances greater thanzero (100, 300, 600,>1600 µmol m–2 S–2)The average decrease in conductance due to measurement in elevatedCO2 concentration was 32% for Cercis, 29% for Quercus, 26% forPopulus, and 11% for Pinus. For alt species, the absolute decreasein conductance due to measurement in CO2 enrichment decreasedas irradiance decreased or VPD increased. The proportional decreasedue to measurement in CO2 enrichment decreased in three of eightcases: from 0.46 to 0.10 in Populus and from 0.18 to 0.07 inPinus as irradiance decreased from>1600 to 100 µmolm–2 s–1 and from 0.35 to 0.24 in Cercis as VPD increasedfrom 1.3 to 2.6 kPa. The effects of dissolved Pb, Cd and Hg on growth and survivalof adult Biomphalaria glabrata Say. uninfected and infectedwith Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, were examined. Pb at concentrationsfrom 0.25–100 µM, Cd from 0.075–0.25 µMand Hg from 0.25–1 µM significantly reduced growthand survival of normal snails. With each metal the effects increasedwith increasing concentration. The LC 25 at 2 wks exposure was82 ± 19, 0.22 ± 0.04 and 0.94 ± 0.13 µM(x ± S.E.) for Pb, Cd and Hg, respectively. Snails exposedto heavy metals continued to be reproductively active, but theegg production was highly variable and no significant effectof heavy metal exposure was demonstrated. Infection also decreasedsurvival and growth of snail hosts and infected individualsexposed to heavy metals displayed the greatest mortality. TheLC 25 for infected snails at 2 wks exposure was 8 ± 3,0.9 ± 0.02 and 0.29 ± 0.08 for Pb, Cd and Hg respectively.A significant interaction between heavy metal exposure and infectionwas apparent. Infected snails were not reproductively active.Cercarial shedding by infected snails was significantly reducedin the presence of heavy metals and by 6 wks shedding had ceasedat the highest metal concentrations. The objective of the present study was to quantify mesozooplanktongrazing in the eutrophic waters of Guanabara Bay. Mesozooplankton(>200 µm) was dominated by the copepods Acartia lilljeborgi,Acartia tonsa, Parvocalanus crassirostris and Paracalanus furcatus.Dinoflagellates, specifically the species Prorocentrum triestinum,were an important group for mesozooplankton nutrition, beingingested in significant amounts during all experiments. On average,12.3 ± 2.9 P. triestinum cells were ingested copepod–1min–1 (other dinoflagellates: 11 ± 8 cells copepod–1min–1). Filamentous cyanophyceae and nanoplankton wereingested in one experiment each, but the mesozooplankton communitygenerally preferred dinoflagellates to these groups, which werealways abundant in the water column. Euglenophyceae were notingested, although they dominated in one experiment. Mesozooplanktoningested, on average, only 0.2% of the nano- and microplanktonbiomass per day. The results suggest that grazing was not acontrolling process for the nano- and microplankton communityin the study area. Addition of zoeae larvae of Chasmagnatusgranulata (Decapoda: Brachyura: Grapsidae) in one experimenthad a significant effect on the mortality of adult copepods,probably due to a predator–prey relationship.  相似文献

A comparison between bat-pollinated plant assemblages at twosites in different altitudinal ranges covered by the Atlanticrainforest in southeastern Brazil is presented. The lowlands(5–90 m) harbour ten plant species in seven families,pollinated mostly by three glossophagine bat species. The highlands(1540–1600 m) harbour seven plant species in five families,pollinated by a single species of glossophagine. Bromeliadsaccount for about 30% of the bat-pollinated species at eachassemblage. Tube and brush shapes prevail in the flowers atboth sites. Corolla lengths averaged 26.8 and 37.2 mm, sugarconcentrations in nectar averaged 15.0 and 18.1%, and nectarvolumes averaged 150.8 and 167.0 µl in the lowland andhighland assemblages, respectively. The flowers are pollinatedmostly by glossophagine bats during hovering visits, and theplants are visited in the trap-line foraging pattern. The plantsbloom annually and both assemblages show a staggered continualflowering pattern. Flowering seasonality was found at both sites,with flowering clustering in the drier season at the lowlandsite and in the wetter season at the highland site. The ratiobetween bat-pollinated and hummingbird-pollinated species is0.24 at the lowland site and 0.23 at the highland one. Cortical Bundles in the Persistent, Photosynthetic Stems of Cacti   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
We examined 62 species in 45 genera of the cactus subfamilyCactoideae; all had collateral cortical bundles that permeatedthe broad, water-storing inner cortex and extended to the baseof the outer, photosynthetic palisade cortex. Mean distancebetween cortical bundles was 0.75 mm, similar to the mean spacing(0.74 mm) of veins in leaves of Pereskia, a genus of relictleaf-bearing cacti. In 16 species, both young and extremelyold stem cortex was available for study: in all of these, olderbundles had larger amounts of phloem than did younger bundles,indicating that phloem had been produced for many years. Inten species, older bundles also had more xylem than youngerbundles. In two genera (Rhipsalis and Selenicereus) there werecaps of primary phloem fibres, and in a single species (Pilosocereusmortensenii) cortical bundle xylem contained libriform fibres.All cortical bundle tracheary elements were narrow (radius range,0.91–8.2 µm; mode, 1.8–2.7 µm), similarto Pereskia leaf vein elements (radius range, 1.8–2.7µm); this was much narrower than stem wood vessels (radiusrange, 10–42 um; mode, 23–28 µm). Longitudinalconduction of water and nutrients probably occurs predominantlyin stem wood, with cortical bundles maintaining the broad, voluminouscortex, the outer part of which is the plant's photosynthetictissue and the inner part of which stores water and starch.The cortex of the Cactordeae contains numerous leaflike characters;homeotic genes may be involved in its morphogenesis. Samples were collected for analysis of chlorophyll a concentration(Chi a), microphytoplankton and zooplankton abundance. Generally,the highest Chl a concentrations (up to 2.0 µg l–1)and zooplankton densities (up to 192 ind. m–3) were recordedat stations within the inter-island area while the lowest values(<0.4 µg l–1) were observed at stations upstreamof the islands. High Chl a and zooplankton biomass values werealso associated with the SAF. Microphytoplankton were dominatedby chain-forming species of the genera Chaetoceros (mainly C.neglectus),Fragilariopsis spp. and the large diatom Dactyliosolen antarcticus.The zooplankton assemblages were always dominated by mesozooplanktonwhich at times contributed up to 98% of total zooplankton abundanceand up to 95% of total biomass. Among mesozooplankton, copepods,mainly Clausocalanus brevipes and Metridia lucens numericallydominated. Among the macrozooplankton euphausiids, mainly Euphausiavallentini, E.longirostis and Stylocheiron maximum, and chaetognaths(Sagitta gazellae) accounted for the bulk of abundance and biomass.Cluster and ordination analysis did not identify any distinctbiogeographic regions among either the microphytoplankton orzooplankton.  相似文献
